Local company benefits from federal investment Ali RAZA araza@insidetoronto.com S c a r b o ro u g h c o m p a n y Celplast Metallized Products Ltd. received an investment of $2.075 million from the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario) recently.

Minister of State for FedDev Ontario Gary Goodyear and Scarborough Centre MP Roxanne James made the announcement at Celplast’s headquarters on Commander Boulevard last Friday. Celplast President Dante Ferrari and CEO Chuck Larsen were also present.

The announcement was made after Goodyear and James received a tour of the facility with Ferrari and other management employees.

“This sector is moving from the hardcore sweat and

greasy kinds of things to the high-tech robotics and very sophisticated equipment and technology,” Goodyear said.

“And we need to do that in order to continue to compete with the rest of the world.”

Goodyear mentioned October marks National Manufactur ing Month, which is an initiative started

by Canadian manufacturers and exporters. The aim of the campaign, he said, is to raise awareness about the economic and social impacts and benefits of the manufacturing industry.

James added October is also Small Business Month in Ontario, with a similar campaign to promote small businesses in the province and the GTA. “This is the first project announced through FedDev Ontario’s IGBP initiative,” she said. “The manufacturing

sector employs nearly 1.7 million Canadians. So we’re making particular efforts for

manufacturing businesses to succeed.”

The funding will allow

Celplast to buy new equipment such as a metallizer machine. It hopes the new

equipment can help customize their products with its proprietary in-vacuum coating technology.

The proprietary technology lets Celplast create a lowercost film with improved barrier properties for applications in food packaging and industrial markets.

With these improvements, Celplast hopes to diversify its export markets and “strengthen” the advanced manufacturing sector in the GTA. As a result of the funding, 11 new full-time skilled positions are expected to emerge in the company.

FedDev Ontario’s repayable contribution is through the Investing in Business Growth and Productivity (IBGP) initiative.

Many lessons learned from Hurricane Hazel

S

ixty years ago today, Toronto woke up to a scene of horror. On the night of Oct. 15, accumulated heavy rains associated with Hurricane Hazel led to flooding that killed 81 people.

On Raymore Drive along the Humber River, 32 houses were washed away and 30 people were killed.

Five volunteer firefighters died when their truck was swept away as they tried to help a stranded motorist caught in the Humber’s flood waters.

Along with the Humber, the Don and Rouge rivers and Highland Creek flooded their banks with enormous amounts of fast-moving water. By the time it was over, some 4,000 families across southern Ontario and more than 1,800 in Toronto had been left homeless.

While 1954 may seem a long time ago to many, the impacts of Hurricane Hazel and how it changed land usage and development in Toronto are felt to this day. Also, judging by the many letters we’ve received from readers regarding the 60th our view anniversary, it is still well remembered by those who lived through it or lost family members. The firemen were all there and had ropes and were making a human chain to reach the stranded people. I will never forget their cries for help as long as I live.”

Madeline McDowell, who is now vice-chair of the Humber Watershed Alliance, was 13 when Hurricane Hazel struck.

She said at the time many didn’t realize how deadly the storm had been until the next day.

Coming on the heels of days of heavy rains in southern Ontario, Hurricane Hazel resulted in some 20 billion gallons of water rushing down the Humber, washing away everything in its path – bridges, houses, vehicles and people.

After the hurricane, a conservation authority, now known as Toronto Region Conservation Authority, was formed to improve flood control measures and regulate development on flood plains.

A hard lesson was learned by the death and destruction of Hurricane Hazel, but our city is now much better prepared for natural disasters.

Attention shoppers: embarrassing sale in Aisle 1

h, rats, I’m out of toilet paper. Man, I hate when that happens.

I don’t need any this second, mind you. It’s not an emergency or anything.

I just want to make sure I’m not caught without any the next time nature calls, or texts, or tweets, or whatever nature does these days to let us know that we have to go.

What bugs me is all the trouble you have to go through before you get toilet paper. You have to put on a disguise, for heaven’s sake. You don’t dare go shopping for toilet paper without a fake nose and glasses. The manufacturers have made sure of that with their packaging. For some reason toilet paper only seems to be sold by the metric ton. So the moment you grab one of these monstrous bundles the whole store knows what you’ve bought.

You can spot your purchase several time zones away, in fact. The toilet

jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY paper sticks so high out of your shopping cart it looks like you just won one of those giant stuffed pandas at the Ex. Heck, even NASA can pick it up on its radar screens all the way from Jupiter.

If you were able to buy just one teensy weensy little roll, nobody would give you a second glance. But when you’re forced to get enough to last Tom Hanks 100 years on that deserted island he was stuck on in Cast Away, everybody around fears for their lives. Getting that much toilet paper at one time is tantamount to announcing: “Hey guess what I’m gonna being doing soon?”

Ah, but how soon? That’s the $64,000 question.

You can see it in the terrified eyes of shoppers when they see you rounding the corner with your huge package in tow. They look

at you as if they think you’re on the shot clock and they could be in peril.

I swear you can hear the theme music from Jaws pounding in the background as you approach and the aisles immediately part like the Red Sea to let you pass by. The only thing missing is Charlton Heston leading the way.

For the life of me I’ve never been able to figure out why the manufacturers want us to disclose to a room full of strangers that we need toilet paper when we don’t even discuss such personal matters with friends. I mean, when was the last time you heard somebody around the water cooler say, “Hey, Len, I was just telling Steve and Joey that you have a real nasty case of the runs.”

Even doctors are uncomfortable talking about bathroom habits. They, of all people, should be used to such talk, but it makes them uneasy, too. When he/she wants to know about what’s going on with you behind

closed doors they tap dance around it like Gene Kelly, using the euphemism, bowel movements.

Not so for toilet paper manufacturers. The large product we walk out with is akin to wearing a veritable sandwich board ad.

Speaking of which, I’ve stalled long enough. I’ve got to get a move on and alert the shoppers at my neighbourhood store what I’m going to be up to later tonight.

But before I head out, time to take one last costume inspection to make sure I can get in an and out of there without being recognized.

Fake nose? Check. Fake glasses? Check.

Red face hiding underneath the idiotic disguise?

Check.

Hurricane Hazel’s damage Recalling a near-death experience to home made it unlivable

To the editor: Re: ‘Hurricane Hazel remembered 60 years later’, Oct. 9, The Mirror.

When Hurricane Hazel hit us, I had just turned 14 a few days prior. We lived on Gilhaven Avenue, which was the last street off the bottom of Raymore Drive. We lived three houses in from the footbridge that washed out and sent water flooding around the bend and took out that row of houses at the bottom of Raymore.

During the night we were woken by loud knocking on our door telling us to get to higher ground as the Humber was flooding its banks. Many of our neighbours and ourselves went up to the Westmount Army and Navy Club, which I believe was on Kingdom Street. They took us in for the night. The next morning when we came back to our home it was hard to believe the devastation.

The river had risen so high

and spread out so much it looked like a lake. The bridge was gone and we then realized that so were the houses so close to us. Our basements were flooded and we weren’t allowed to stay. We were put up in motels along the lake shore.

Eventually my brother and myself went to stay with our grandparents in Uxbridge while my mom, dad and younger brother went to live with relatives. After a few weeks, my mom and dad had enough of us being split up and decided we were all going back home.

We were the first family to return and the Toronto Star came out and took our picture on our front porch and wrote an article about us. Our basement was still flooded and we had trouble with rats from a dump that was on the other side of the river. It was hard getting up into Weston without the bridge as we didn’t have a car.

When Hurricane Hazel hit on Oct. 15, 1954, I was working at the Bank of Commerce at St. Clair and Dufferin and my husband was picking me up to drive to Maple where we lived with my parents.

We tried to go across Steeles Avenue and just west of Dufferin Street there was a dip in the road and we thought we could make it through as we could see headlights under the water approaching us from the West.

That did not happen and the car stalled and we were pulled up against the guardrail with the water rushing around the car. Our groceries were floating around the back seat and as I knew my husband could not swim, we held hands and said our goodbyes to each other.

Before we knew what was happening, someone had backed up to our car with his truck and a man dove under the water with a chain and

hooked it to our back bumper and pulled us to safety. We were so thankful and overwhelmed we did not get his name.

When we got the car started again we went south to 385 Oakwood Ave.,a home of our friends whom we knew would let us dry out and stay the night.

Our friend Bill Sloan had a truck and he suggested we go and help out.

We drove to Raymore Drive and when we got there the Humber River was huge and houses were floating down the river with people on top screaming for help.

The firemen were all there and had ropes and were making a human chain to reach the stranded people.

I will never forget their cries for help as long as I live.

My husband was a milkman at that time and on the Monday morning on his route in Woodbridge he was called upon to help pull people from the swollen waters West of Islington along Hwy. 7.

I have spoken at different functions on how I was

involved and thank the good Lord I am still here today at almost 81 years to talk about it.

We lived near Bathurst and Wilson and my father tried so very, very hard to get us to safety to my grandmother’s house on Evelyn Avenue, near the Junction.

He piled five kids in the car, pajamas, raincoats, boots, hats, gloves and teddy bears.

We almost made it to Bathurst Street, but the little bridge was washed out. Back to our home, in the torrential downpour of rain and unbelievable winds. He carried us, one by one by one into the house.

He was scared, little did we know! Will never forget.

Centennial breaks ground on new residence Centennial College hosted a groundbreaking ceremony to begin the construction of its new Residence and Culinary Arts Centre yesterday.

The $85-million building offers a 740-student capacity residence and a culinary arts centre with seven kitchen labs, eight additional classrooms and a teaching restaurant.

Chef Robert Rainford, Centennial culinary ambassador and Food Network personality, was present for the ceremony to promote the culinary arts centre.

The college’s growth in the past decade has prompted it to seek more accommodations for its students.

The new residence joins the former Howard Johnson hotel, now a 340-bed facility on Progress Avenue, which was the college’s first residence in 2001.

The new residence has a central courtyard with a bathroom and kitchen in every one of the two- and four-bed suites.

Man arrested, second suspect sought after shots fired at home One person has been arrested and another is being sought after shots were fired into a Cataraqui Crescent and Warden Avenue residence.

Police said two men fired several rounds from a rifle, hitting the front door, windows, inside walls and furniture around 1:20 a.m. on Oct. 7.

Though several people were home at the time, no injuries were reported.

Tevyn Rodney, 20, of Toronto, was arrested Friday and charged with firearm offences.

Police are looking for Justin Mohammed, 19, of Toronto.

He is described as 5’ 8” tall with a slim build and long, dark hair.

Police consider him armed and dangerous and said he should not be approached.

Police are searching for a suspect in connection with a stabbing and robbery at the Eglinton GO station that left a man with a collapsed lung.

Police said an 18-yearold man was waiting for a GO train at the station, near Bellamy Road and Eglinton Av e n u e , w h e n a m a n approached and demanded his gold chain around 5:30 p.m. last Wednesday.

A fight broke out after the victim refused, and he was stabbed several times and robbed of his chain.

The victim managed to chase the suspect to a nearby footpath, but after realizing he was injured, returned to the station. He was taken to hospital and treated for a collapsed lung and cuts.

The suspect is described as 25, six feet tall, 175 pounds with black hair and a moustache. He was wearing a black varsity jacket over a black hooded sweater, blue jeans and a baseball cap.

Will subway kill small business?

Some Scarborough business owners fear impact of long-term construction

iven the hype about Scarborough voters and subways, you’d think small business owners along the route of the proposed Bloor-Danforth line extension want construction to start tomorrow.

But owners of several businesses along the McCowan Road route this week said they don’t want the so-called Scarborough Subway at all.

“Once they start digging down there, that’s it, business is done,” said Noel Thomas, who opened a Caribbean take-out, Tropical Breeze, a year ago.

“I don’t think it’s a good idea, but I’m not the big guy with all the money,” added Thomas, arguing the politicians who make decisions on transit projects don’t have to live with the results.

“The big guys always squash the little guy.”

Planning the extension could take four years and its precise route is unknown, but Wendy Biso, whose coffee shop is in the same Danforth Road strip plaza south of where the road merges into McCowan, dreads what the long construction period will do to her own fledgling enterprise.

“It’s just going to kill it,” she in an interview behind the counter of Nicole’s Mummy’s, at some points wiping her eye with a napkin. “I’d have to close, because I’m having a hard time now.”

If local businesses do close, Biso, a social worker who lives across the street and opened the place two years ago because the area didn’t have a coffee shop, fears “the neighbourhood will go backwards.”

The ward’s incumbent councillor, Glenn De Baeremaeker, said support for the extension, which he insisted will bring Scarborough “huge” benefits in the long run, is overwhelming.

“It’s going to happen, and it’s going to be a very positive thing.”

But Theo Kalafatis, running against De Baeremaeker, said the

subway will tear his neighbourhood to pieces, and with it businesses people have poured their life savings into.

Offering fewer stations within walking distance for residents than a planned light-rail alternative which the city and province favoured until last year, the extension will not be worth the perhaps 12 years of congestion-causing construction, which Kalafatis argued will force drivers onto nearby the Markham and Kennedy roads.

“It’s a serious blow to the financial health of our neighbourhood,” said Kalafatis, whose campaign flyers feature images of subway station construction sites for the Spadina Subway extension in Downsview.

On Tuesday, Kalafatis, who said the area’s small enterprises are also the front lines of its community development, brought a reporter to Klean Kuts, a McCowan Road barber shop

south of Lawrence Avenue, where Hopeton Brown took over management 14 months ago from Rocky Morra, who has worked there for 33 years.

“It may be a benefit in other ways,” said Brown, “but in terms of business, we’re going to suffer the consequences.”

Another barber, who gave only his first name, Chris, asked the visitor to look at vehicles parked in the plaza lot. “When the subway (construction) come, where are they going to be? Up in the air?” he asked. “We do pay tax. (But) if that’s going on, we cannot pay tax.”

Rupert Gomes, watching Brown cut his son’s hair, said it’s possible such local businesses “will be pushed out” by construction, then shook his head.

Gomes asked, adding he won’t vote on October 27, because he considers Doug Ford, John Tory, and Olivia Chow – the first two support

the extension, the last the LRT – to be “the same.”

Gomes said residents want the community protected as it is, only with better schools, play areas and policing. “These are the big things people are looking for, not a subway system.”

At a variety store on Ellesmere Road just west of McCowan, Leanne Situ said she worries construction may change people’s travel patterns, and the business she started less than three months ago will lose out. “I think we already have enough tall buildings around,” she added.

Won’t more tall buildings coming in the wake of the extension mean more business for her? Maybe, said Situ, but she might go out of business during the “very time-consuming” construction period. “If I can’t pay my bills, I’m going to have to lock the door.”

During a debate at Centennial College last week, Kalafatis asked mayoral candidates if they would compensate people who see a drop in business during subway construction.

Ford said he would: “If the city’s creating disruption, we should be giving them a break on their tax rate. They won’t have the same number of customers coming through their doors.”

Tory, who also said he’d use tax incentives to attract start-up companies along the extension route, agreed the city should look at tax rebates for a “short period of time,” and acknowledged businesses on Eglinton Avenue describe underground LRT construction there as a “moving nightmare,” though some use “clever things” to keep customers coming back.

Chow said the LRT project, planned to start within the current Scarborough Rapid Transit corridor, “is world class” and can be built by 2020.

Kalafatis isn’t the only

Ward 37 council candidate to express concern about the construction and support compensation. In an email last week Kevin Winson pointed out a station for the extension is planned for McCowan and Lawrence, home of The Scarborough Hospital’s General campus.

Traffic there during subway construction will be like that experienced at Keele Street and Finch Avenue for the last several years, “where often even in the middle of the night there has been gridlock,” Winson warned.

“This constant traffic will make it difficult for ambulances to get through and may result in some dire consequences.”

De Baeremaeker last week said he hadn’t received “one single complaint or one single phone call” about subway construction, which may be because it’s years away.

“The final design’s not finished so nobody even knows what they’re talking about,” he said, but also argued the idea of having “one ride to get to downtown Toronto” after work is finished will sell thousands of condominiums around Scarborough Town Centre.

Compensation for businesses has merit, but has to be done appropriately, said De Baeremaeker.

“The subway’s not going to cause that much construction,” said the ward incumbent, adding the already-aged RT will continue to operate until it’s built. “Our aim is to make the city better, not to hurt people.”

UP EXPRESS TRAIN SPOTTED One of the trains that will serve the Union Pearson Express air rail link connection between Union Station and Terminal One of Pearson International Airport, was spotted last week on a testing run along the Georgetown South rail corridor.

The UP service is scheduled to open just before next year’s Toronto Pan American Games.

A four-stop express route intended for business class travel, the service has attracted controversy for the province’s decision to open the line with diesel trains. Both the province and Metrolinx have pledged to convert UP to electric as a precursor to its plan to electrify all GO Transit rail service within 10 years.

sUBWAY CELL SERVICE: montreal wins A cellphone service went live at five subway stations last week. Not the TTC, where negotiations to introduce underground cellular service have fizzled out, but in Montreal’s STM which announced last year a plan to outfit all of its 68 Metro stations.

The service went live on the Green Line and is expected to take seven years to fully implement.

In Toronto, while wireless internet subway installations appear to be going smoothly, it’s been anything but when it comes to negotiations for underground TTC cell service.

A spokesperson for BAI Canada, which was contracted by the TTC to create a Wi-FI and cellular network, said recently the company was taking the “longview” to ongoing negotiations with the Big Three telecoms.

Voting early nothing to be hasty about

W

ith advance polls open this week, it is tempting for those with strong opinions about the future occupant of the Toronto mayor’s office to put on their voting pants and cast ballot now rather than Oct. 27.

Certainly by this point, anyone paying even a bit of attention has heard enough from the top three mayoral candidates to make a choice. As long as one doesn’t hold with the idea of strategic voting then there’s no reason to wait.

If only it were as simple as that: that the future of the city rests solely, or even largely, on the shoulders of one mayor.

It doesn’t, of course. There are 45 pairs of shoulders including the mayor, and while the mayor has enough influence to carry most votes, the buck ultimately stops with 44 city councillors who can support or thwart an agenda as they see fit.

And while mileage may vary, it’s a fair guess that most voters haven’t had nearly as close a look at their

david nickle the city local ward candidates as they have at the Chow-FordTory trifecta.

With the high-octane drama in the mayor’s office this past term, it’s also more of a challenge to assess the record of one’s incumbent councillor. All of them have been operating under extraordinary circumstances – working in an arena that is one-half local governance and one-half Lord of the Flies.

There are a few incumbents who’ve stood out either as candidates for reelection or for the boot.

Giorgio Mammoliti, the Ward 7 councillor surely leads the pack in the latter: more than any other councillor not blood-related to the mayor he’s been a very publicly destructive force on council.

Ron Moeser’s terrible attendance record can be partially excused as he was laid up for nearly a year from ankle surgery gone bad, but otherwise Ward 44

voters would be justified in turfing him.

Similarly long-serving councillor Norm Kelly, on the other hand, probably deserves another victory lap in Ward 40 solely on the basis of his supply-teacher/ deputy mayor role in the final, potentially fractuous year of this last term. Others, like Ward 22’s Josh Matlow or Ward 27’s Kristyn WongTam, have maintained an active enough rookie term to make re-election a relatively easy choice.

What about those many incumbents who kept their heads down through the term? And what do voters do in those seven wards with no incumbent?

It boils down to this: voters who take advantage of advance voting opportunities have more before them than whether it’s to be Ford More Years or four new years.

Getting it right will be delicate work, and nothing to be hasty about.

Cyclist, 63, dies after collision A 63-year-old male cyclist has died after the bike he was riding and a car were involved in a collision in the Warden and Bertrand avenues area.

Police were called to the scene in the northbound lanes of Warden, just south of Marble Arch Crescent, at about 2:10 p.m. last Thursday.

According to police, the cyclist was riding his bike across Warden from the west to east side through a signalized intersection.

The 49-year-old driver of a 2007 Saturn was northbound in the passing lane on Warden when the cyclist was struck by the car.

The cyclist suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision.

Anyone with information, is asked to contact Toronto police traffic services at 416808-1900.

Mayoral candidates have differing views on housing DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com Toronto Community Housing has been a conundrum for Toronto mayors and councils since shortly after the Mike Harris government amalgamated the Metropolitan Toronto municipalities into one back in 1997.

In the course of bringing the six cities and one regional government together, the provincial Tories divested what generally crumbling public housing the province funded, onto the backs of Toronto property taxpayers, who were already dealing with municipally-managed and funded housing companies.

In 2002, Toronto Council rolled it onto the Toronto Community Housing Corporation.

And 12 years later, Toronto taxpayers still haven’t crawled out from the burden of being

one of the biggest landlords in North America: with 58,000 units of housing, about 164,000 tenants ranging from toddlers to seniors – and a repair backlog of more than $700 million.

And to make matters worse: 132,000 names are on the waiting list to find a subsidized home.

Problematic The organization has been problematic. While there have been notable success stories – such as the revitalization of TCHC’s oldest neighbourhood, Regent Park, with the co-operation of the Daniels Group, into a beautiful mixed-income neighbourhood between Parliament and River Streets – the company itself has had a rough few years.

“It seems to me that we may be farther behind than we were four years ago,”

says Susan Gapka, a TCHC tenant and vocal housing advocate.

Gapka has been closely observing developments in public housing since before 2010, when Mayor Rob Ford was elected and immediately took an intense interest in public housing issues.

In 2011, faced with an auditor general’s report showing numerous examples of mismanagement at the Toronto Community Housing Corporation administration and board level, Ford convinced council to outright fire the TCHC board and its senior staff, and put former city councillor Case Ootes in charge of the company as an interim chair.

Through Ootes, the TCHC dipped its toe into the idea of selling off a number of free-standing homes and Toronto Council modified it, emphasizing an ongoing effort to draw the federal and

provincial government back into funding social housing and a long-term plan to deal with the repair backlog.

Mayor Rob Ford, meanwhile, kept the deteriorating condition of Toronto Community Housing units on the public radar with frequent personal visits, the appointment of a new board and the short-lived hiring of a new head of the organization, Eugene Jones – who brought a different skill-set and different management problems that were reported out earlier in 2014, and led to his removal.

Yet, Gapka says, many of the same problems in affordable housing exist as had before: units are crumbling, Mayor candidate Olivia Chow was the first of the major candidates to come out with a housing policy – the centrepiece of which is to create 15,000 new affordable rental units over four years.

Chow is aiming to introduce a mandate to encourage developers to set aside 20 per cent of new residential buildings as affordable rental housing – which she says will lead to that many new units.

At TCHC, Chow is promising to decentralize management of seniors’ housing within the TCHC portfolio to give residents a say in how the building is governed. If successful, she’d spread the system across Toronto.

Tory, in a platform released relatively late in the campaign, intends to use $864 million the city has on hand for TCHC repairs to immediately begin work without waiting for the federal and provincial government to agree to pay its share.

Chow’s campaign pointed out the money is in fact being spent year to year, with $128 million already being spent this year.

Tory also wants to intensify affordable housing on

Toronto Parking Authority and TCHC land – in possible partnership with the private sector, under agreements similar to the one in place between the Daniels Group and TCHC over the redevelopment of Regent Park.

And on TCHC, Tory says he would create a task force to review and recommend changes to the structure of the housing company .

Doug Ford has not yet released a platform on housing, and did not attend an Oct. 8 debate in Regent Park on housing.

Like his brother Mayor Rob Ford, he has said he would like to see Gene Jones returned to his old job.

As of deadline, Ford had not released a plan for dealing with public housing or affordability beyond that.

Three thousand people are needed to carry the flame to Toronto’s Pan Am Games – and if you sign up now, you could be one of them.

“We are starting something

really cool for Canada today,” Col. Chris Hadfield, who will be the first Pan Am torchbearer on May 30, declared at the Toronto Eaton Centre mall as registrations began reecently.

For 41 days next year, the torch will visit five cities outside Ontario and 130 communities in the province before a cauldron for the games is lit in downtown Toronto on July 10.

Hadfield, a former fighter pilot and International Space Station commander – he’s seen the Americas from space thousands of times – said the games will challenge young people to push themselves to the edge of their capabilities.

“The inspiration of it is the key,” added the celebrated Canadian astronaut, who introduced the torch run with Olympic gold medalists Catriona Le May Doan

and Simon Whitfield.

Torchbearers must be at least 13 years old when the relay begins in order to participate. They can register online at TORONTO2015. org/torch-relay.

Some of the 3,000 bearers of the flame – to be lit at an Aztec ceremony at the Pyramid of the Sun in Teotihuacan, Mexico – will be chosen by communities on the route or games stakeholders.

When doctors diagnose breast cancer, they typically tell their patients which stage the cancer is in. Men and women with no previous experience with cancer may not know what these stages signify or may not understand the differences between the stages.

The following is a rundown of breast cancer stages to help men and women diagnosed with breast cancer better understand their disease.

Staging helps doctors determine how far the breast cancer has progressed, but staging also helps doctors determine the best course of treatment to contain or eliminate the cancer. For example, a person diagnosed with stage 1 breast cancer will likely undergo a different course of treatment than someone diagnosed with stage 4.

Stage 2

When breast cancer is detected early, it is often characterized as stage 0 or 1, which means the cancer cells have not spread beyond a very limited area.

Stage 0 breast cancer is a noninvasive cancer where abnormal cells have been found in the lining of the breast milk duct but have not spread outside the duct into surrounding breast tissue. Stage 0 breast cancer is very treatable, but if treatment is not sought, it can spread into surrounding breast tissue.

Stage 1 breast cancer is diagnosed when the tumour is very small and has not spread to the lymph nodes. In certain instances when a person is diagnosed with stage 1 breast cancer, no tumour is found in the breast. When a tumour is found, it is typically two centimetres or smaller. According to

A stage 2 breast cancer diagnosis means the cancer has begun to grow or spread, but it is still in the early stages and typically very treatable. Stage 2 breast cancer is divided into two groups, stage 2A and stage 2B, a distinction that is made because of the size of the tumour and if the breast cancer has spread to the lymph nodes.

Conducting a breast examination at home In the shower, use the pads of your fingers and move around your entire breast in a circular pattern, moving from the outside to the center, checking the entire breast and armpit area.

Check both breasts each month for any lumps, thickening or hardened knots.

Conduct an examination in bed. The breast tissue will naturally distribute over your chest wall and ribs when you are lying down. Place a pillow under your right shoulder and your right arm behind your head. Using your left hand, move the pads of your fingers around your right breast gently in small circular motions covering the entire breast area and armpit. Squeeze the nipple

and check for discharge or lumps. Repeat on left breast.

Conduct a visual examination. Standing in front of the mirror, look at your breasts with your hands at your side and over your head. Look for differences between breasts. Unusual dimpling or taut or thick skin may be indicative of a problem.

Should any lumps or abnormalities be discovered during an examination, a woman should not panic but schedule an appointment with her doctor for a more thorough examination, which may include a mammogram or ultrasound to map out images of the breast that may be hidden to the naked eye.

Advance polls open until Oct. 19 If you’re in Scarborough and want to vote early in the municipal election, the place to drop your ballot is at a community centre near you.

Advance polls are open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. through to Oct. 19.

Some people aren’t so young when they do it for the first time, but Toronto social agencies want the abstainers to know how voting makes people feel.

MyFirstTimeTO, which launched this week, encourages people to post videos to Facebook telling the story of the first time they voted.

The page’s humour – the implied comparison in some voters’ videos with a first sexual experience – may get old fast for some, but the significance of voting comes across.

“You feel important in this country,” one man says in his testament.

A woman says in her home country, to go out to vote is to risk violence. “I overcame that fear,” she adds. “I wanted my freedom.”

More can be posted to www.facebook.com/myfirsttimeTO “If you’re feeling in a truly confessional mode, take one minute and tell us about your first time,” John Campey of the Social Planning Council of Toronto, which set up the page with Toronto Neighbourhood Centres, said.

Campey said there’s not enough education in schools about voting and the video project is a chance to demystify the process, particularly for young people and newcomers to Canada.

Another woman who posted a video suggests her first time voting was a bit of an anti-climax.

“I had built it up in my mind so that it was so huge,” when it wasn’t, she says.

The policy outlines how the government would be better legalizing the drug with strict regulations in order to decrease risk, especially to youth 18 to 29, which according to CAMH are among the highest users of cannabis in the developed world – also at 40 per cent.

“So youth have the impression that it’s natural and that makes it not harmful. But in fact that’s not the case.”

The framework also outlines recommendations from CAMH to the government on regulating the use of cannabis, if legalized, that would have the less harmful effects. Some include a minimum age for purchase and consumption,

Move over, Ford Nation. Food Nation wants to be heard in Toronto’s municipal campaign, too.

Food Forward, the group behind the food issues platform, staged a bean-bag toss last Friday, on the steps of Old City Hall.

Group members and passers-by lobbed fruit-shaped bags at holes above pictures of the city’s three leading mayoral candidates – trying to get food “into their heads” as a campaign issue.

“Food is often left off the table” when Doug Ford, John Tory and Olivia Chow sit down to debate, Food Forward founder Darcy Higgins said.

Food issues shouldn’t be ignored, he added, because food bank use in Toronto’s inner suburbs is up 38 per cent in the last two years, and many city residents either cannot walk to the nearest grocery store or cannot afford to buy healthy food there.

Food Forward believes its platform, calling for poverty

reduction and the creation of “healthy food neighbourhoods” and 1,000 “good food jobs” across Toronto for young and marginalized people, can make a difference by 2018, Higgins said.

Chow, 15 incumbent councillors and other a few dozen other candidates for mayor and council, as well as more than 1,000 Toronto residents, have signed on.

Arthur graduated from Malvern CI (1960) and UofT Pharmacy (1964). He taught in Scarborough, first chemistry at Cedarbrae CI and then as Science Head at Birchmount Park CI until his retirement in 1998. Arthur was a past president of the Seven Oaks Camera Club and of the Canadian Antique Phonograph Society.

Arthur collected antiques, phonographs pianos, music, movies, boats, stories and many wonderful lifetime friends. He did say his grandchildren were his favourite collection.

He loved Kasshabog mornings on the beach and an evening ride on the pontoon, laughing and line dancing at the Newmarket Seniors’ Centre, and making the surprise winning play in a euchre game.

Friends and family are invited to an informal gathering to swap stories at Taylor Funeral Home, 524 Davis Drive, Newmarket on Saturday, October18, between 1and 4 pm.
