“We collect food from about 3,000 homes in the Centennial community,” said organizing member Ian Cooper. “It’s extremely well received by the community.”

College-bound stars at OFSAA Tw o s t u d e n t s f r o m Scarborough’s St. John Paul II Catholic Secondary School will be continuing their basketball careers with top U.S. college teams.

Last week, Eternati Willock and Danielle Garven, in a ceremony at their Military Trail high school attended by

coaches and teammates, inked scholarships, respectively, to the University of North Carolina and the University of Minnesota.

This week, however, university is the furthest thing from their minds. They are hoping to close out their high school careers in style as they

lead their team at the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) 4A finals in Guelph.

The tournament kicks off today and runs through to Saturday. They helped their team to a silver medal last year and they’re ranked second this year, behind Pickering High School.

Garven, at six-one, is a guard-wing; Willock, at sixtwo, is a power forward.

They’ve been on their senior team since Grade 10.

Both are also completing their final year in the Scarborough Basketball Association (SBA) with the Scarborough Blues.

Their individual accomplishments also highlight the skills they will use in the NCAA as Willock and Garven have won numerous MVP awards and medals.

Their athletic talent extends beyond basketball; the girls played on the school’s volleyball team in grades 9 and 10, helping the team earn a gold medal in the city championships.

Federal NDP will not support Rouge National Urban Park bill “The answer is no,” said Megan Leslie, Halifax MP and NDP Deputy Leader and Environment Critic, regarding whether or not she would recommend to her caucus voting for the controversial Bill C-40 for the establishment of Rouge National Urban Park.

Her decision was made with Beaches-East York MP Matthew Kellway after an extensive tour of the proposed park led by Friends of the Rouge Watershed among other environmental groups.

On Monday, the MPs travelled along the Rouge

River from Lake Ontario to Stouffville via bus to see firsthand the ecology that so many environmental groups say needs protecting.

Among the NDP MPs, the opposition to the federal government’s proposal is unanimous.

“It’s difficult to recommend to my caucus that we vote against a bill that will create a park,” Leslie said. “But talking to stakeholders here today, realizing what a precedent this could set for other parks across Canada, I think we’re going to have to.”

She added that the recommendation would occur later this week.

Among those flaws were a failure of the bill to give priority to ecological integrity and a failure to “meet or exceed” older Rouge Park and Oak Ridges Moraine provincial policies.

While environmental groups accuse the Conservatives of ignoring long-standing investments and plans, NDP MPs Leslie and Kellway criticized the federal government for “creating false tension between farmers and environmentalists” and not co-operating with other levels of government.

“The government is trying to paint this as farmers versus environmentalists,” she said.

“It’s an unfair characterization. We have farmers’ and environmental groups at committee and everybody is reasonable.”

The proposed amendment “took everyone into account,” Leslie said.

The third reading of Bill C-40 will be set for a later date.

t’s been 16 years since six municipalities were formed into the City of Toronto.

And yet, more than a decade and a half after amalgamation, Toronto is still dealing with numerous policy discrepancies, bylaw inconsistencies and service disparities in its various neighbourhoods.

Rules governing anything from snow removal to mechanical leaf collection to rooming house bylaws can be markedly different depending on what area of the city you live in. It’s completely understandable why York South-Weston Councillor Frances Nunziata wants to approach the budget committee to explore extending mechanical leaf collection to all parts of the city – including her ward. Currently, the service is only available in certain pockets of Etobicoke, Scarborough and a small part our view of York. How is it fair that residences mere blocks away in the Unified city same city can receive disproportionate levels of service? makes it It’s reasonable to expect there to be a transition period from stronger such a complicated process as the megacity amalgamation was. But now, in 2014, we’re into the sixth term of Toronto council in its current format. It’s past time to tidy this up.

In the coming term, Toronto’s new council must make a sincere effort to build more consistent policy throughout the city – one that reflects a more unified entity that is Toronto. Councillors must understand there will be differences between putting forth their priorities from their constituents and looking at those priorities through a city-wide lens.

Governing a city with the size, complexity and diversity of Toronto is a challenging task. But a city that has more consistency in its policies can take pride in a more equitable distribution of services and still respect the unique characteristics of its 140 neighbourhoods. Providing equal access to the benefits that come with being a resident of this city does nothing to change those valuable characteristics.

The effects of amalgamation were felt strongly when it happened in 1998. The effects of amalgamation are still a hurdle today in this city. They will continue to be a hurdle as long as we don’t view Toronto as one unified entity. A more unified Toronto is a stronger Toronto. The sooner the city unshackles itself from a hodge-podge of policies the sooner it’s prepared to deal with present challenges.

To really savour winter, just add ice I’ve got a bold, red circle around Saturday, Nov. 22 on my desk calendar. I want to make sure others are aware of the special day, too, so I’m carrying it around with me this week to show to everybody I meet.

That’s the calendar I’m referring to, only. For those I bump into who have their hearts set on seeing my desk as well, sorry. I tried it once. Attempting to squeeze through those turnstiles with a little backpack or carry-on bag is tough enough. With furniture? Fuggedaboutit.

But I digress, back to the premise.

The day in question is the beginning of the outdoor skating/shinny season in my neighborhood at Cedarvale Air, aka Cedarvale, aka Rink B, aka That Outdoor Rink At The Bottom of Cedarvale

It’s also the opening of eight other municipal rinks in the city. Alas, there isn’t room enough in this space for their names, let alone their aka’s.

The popular Natrel Rink at Harbourfront Centre on Queens Quay West is already in use and the remaining rinks in the city will be good to go by the end of the month.

The early start is music to these ears.

I had to pinch myself last year when I found that the rinks would open by the end of the first week of December. That was a vast improvement over previous years. The bump up of another two weeks this year? Fuggedaboutit.

(As another aside, using “fuggedaboutit” this many times in one column, and in one about outdoor rinks of all things?

Fuggedaboutit.)

Having the rinks up and running this soon reminds me of when I was a kid.

We had outdoor ice at all the elementary and high schools by the third week of November. The fact that the ice surface was of the natural variety back then and the ice on the outdoor rinks we’ll be on Saturday will be fortified by compressors underneath won’t lessen my appreciation of the experience. I’ll take a skate down memory lane anyway I can get it.

But what I really like about this extension of the outdoor ice season by the municipal powers-that-be is their understanding of the important role that winter activities play within the fabric the city, activities that have sadly been declining due to climate change.

They couldn’t flip a switch and change global warming to global cooling to make things the way the were, so they did the only thing they could do under the circumstances: they flipped a switch that turns on a compressor that allows us to turn back the clock for a little while at least. Pretty cool thinking if you ask me.

So, before I step out on the ice Saturday I’m going to make a point of tipping my hat to those who made this happen. Well, maybe not. Given that the forecast says it’ll be a little chilly that day, it’ll most likely be my tuque.

Unless, I’m playing shinny, of course.

In which case, it won’t be either. I’ll definitely be tipping my helmet.

ictures of youth have flooded social media feeds as the art of the selfie has taken the online world by storm.

Debbie Gordon, lead researcher and “kidsmediacentre” director, along with a team of Centennial College graduates, conducted a year-long multimedia study about youth, celebrity and digital fame.

The study, titled #Instafame and the Epidemiology of a SelfieCurated Culture, has revealed some unsettling findings that some youth are becoming obsessed with the narcissistic culture.

“We found a lot of kids have created enormous brands, some kids with 50,000, 100,000 even close to a million followers.

But when a child puts on their Instagram, ‘I’m kind of bored today hit me up with a phone call,’ and shares their phone number to the world, how do we feel about this?”

Gordon said.

The number of young social media users has grown at a blistering pace using image oriented platforms like Instagram, Twitter and video sharing apps like Vine to gain online popularity.

“Kids are using provocative selfies and stories to build fame. Likes equals approval, likes equals popularity,” Gordon said.

Snapchat, another popular mobile app that allows you to send photos and videos referred to as snaps, averages 400 million snaps per day, according to the study.

And there is no surprise the study revealed how celebrity culture has had a direct impact on young social media users, show-

ing youth who were heavily invested in celebrities like Mylie Cyrus and Kim Kardashian learned firsthand how to grow their personal brands – some positively, others in a manner that raised flags.

And from selfies comes the hashtag which is used to boost marketability and search results.

Hashtags ranging from #hotbod and #sexy to

#toolpick circulate the web revealing hyper-sexualized images that could leave some young people vulnerable to online predators or bullies.

According to the study, young people are also using hashtags to talk about personal anxiety and personal troubles like #imnotokay or #bulimic then attaching a picture or video for the world to see.

But there are plenty of upsides to using social media. Gordon points out that a majority of young people are using social media in a healthy organic way such as bringing attention to important social causes or even raising money for those in need.

Yet, what can parents do when things go sideways?

Centennial College graduates, Kayla McNally, Jess Westlake and Felix Chan spent a year researching with Gordon and they say the best way is to be honest with your kids from the moment they get their hands on a mobile device.

“When you give your child a smartphone or a laptop, talk about it,” McNally said.

“Kids lack life experience and don’t necessarily understand the negative aspects or know the

Parents should show interest in what their kids are doing online, Westlake added. “If there is an open conversation around it then there is nothing to hide.”

Gordon is concerned about the subterranean level of the selfie culture, and said many educators are not aware of what’s going on, making it challenge for schools and parents to identify warning signs.

The study it hopes to encourage conversation with parents and their kids, she said.

Scarborough-Agincourt MPP Soo Wong said the board could urge the TTC to conduct a full environmental assessment of the project and hold another public forum.

Through an assistant, the riding’s newlyelected MP, Arnold Chan, also expressed the concerns of residents, the Scarborough Chinese Baptist Church and other garage opponents to the board.

The concerns – pollution from diesel fumes, vibrations, the added danger of accidents for seniors crossing nearby roads, the risk of fuel tanks by a GO Rail line exploding – were aired before, including at the August meeting when city council approved the garage.

“Council’s already decided this bus garage is going to be built, and built here,” argued Gord Perks, a board member and downtown councillor who added he was “alarmed” some residents “have ratcheted this issue up.”

Perks also had harsh words for politicians he said failed to tell residents the bus garage “isn’t a big deal” and means better TTC service for seniors.

The TTC, which bought the industrial land near Kennedy Road and McNicoll Avenue in 2005, hopes to open the garage by the end of 2019.

Its other garages, all of which are near residential areas, are overcrowded.

The transit authority won’t be able to improve bus service in north Scarborough – or anywhere else in the city – without completing the project, and the TTC would pay millions for every month of delay, the board was told.

In a report released last week, the Amalgamated Transit Union, Local 113, which represents TTC employees, said the project should be rushed to completion in 2018 because the TTC “desperately needs more space to store and maintain buses.”

Scarborough Councillor Raymond Cho, a board member who voted to approve the garage at city council, proposed asking the TTC to do a full EA because, he said, residents felt their concerns weren’t heard.

Cho, who is also a TTC commissioner, admitted to feeling conflicted about his motion, knowing there already were consultations with residents on the project which, if deferred, he acknowledged will give the TTC no place to put new buses.

He compromised with himself by proposing the TTC complete its study “within six months.”

Cho’s motion was defeated after Mihevc said an EA would take two or three years, with each year costing the TTC millions.

Opponents argued the proposed site was now part of a “corridor” of seniors’ buildings, including a long-term-care home, that qualified as “sensitive uses” the province and city should protect from a garage.

But Glenn De Baeremaeker, another Scarborough councillor, said the land is zoned industrial and an owner could make use of it, “whether you like it or not.”

A chowder cook-off between some of the top ocean-wise chefs in the city took place in Toronto’s Historical Distillery District earlier this month.

The fifth annual Vancouver Aquarium’s Ocean Wise Chowder Chowdown, which takes place in four Canadian cities during November, aims to raise awareness about the importance of sustainable seafood in Canada.

The event saw 11 local chefs go head-to-head with their ocean-friendly chowders.

Chef and sommelier Thomas Heitz now a culinary professor and executive chef at Centennial College’s Horizons restaurant at Progress Campus in Scarborough, nabbed the coveted People’s Choice Award.

“Chowder is such a nostalgic thing. If you mess with chowder too much, people will hate you,” Heitz said.

“The trick was finding out how to take something that was so nostalgic and give it a little twist.”

Heitz, who served a Lake Superior trout chowder along side a Mill Street Belgium with an Ontario brie, won by a landslide with more than 60 per cent of the peoples’ vote.

“I was quite happy with it and if it weren’t for the students from Centennial College – Diana Gomez Bolado, Eric Loucks, Kleyr Balingit Ombao, Michael Hanley – it wouldn’t have been a success.”

The event has become a popular friendly competition and is meant to highlight the negative consequences of overfishing and environmentally destructive fishing

methods.

Heitz said with the overfishing that has been taking place over the years, a lot of fish are either starting to disappear or becoming so expensive that restaurants are not able to buy them because customers are not willing to pay the extra costs.

By the end of the evening a champion was crowned.

Chef Kendall Collingridge of Hooked was rewarded the top prize by five judges from the restaurant and food industry.

All proceeds from the chowder events go to support Ocean Wise, a Vancouver Aquarium conservation program developed to educate consumers about sustainable seafood.

Consumers who want to support the cause can purchase products marked with the Ocean Wise symbol.

Board of health: energy drinks and young people don’t mix Board to study banning sale of energy drinks to kids and teens DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com Toronto Board of Health will be considering the possibility of banning the sale of energy drinks to children and youth, over the objection of beverage industry and convenience

store lobbyists who say the evidence in favour of a ban is too scant.

The board voted unanimously to have a study conducted on ways to police the sale of the highly caffeinated beverages, on the advice of the Ontario Medical

Association.

The beverages – Red Bull being one of them – contain a higher level of caffeine than regular colas but far less than brewed coffee.

Jim Goetz, president of the Canadian Beverage Association, made that point as he addressed the Monday meeting of the Toronto Board of Health, and also attempted to argue that Health Canada

had given energy drinks the OK when it came to children over the age of two.

“The problem is that this motion (to request a report) was based on ignoring Health Canada’s formal position,” said Goetz.

However, Health Canada has only given a Temporary Market Authorization, which acknowledged that there are questions about the health impacts of the beverages on young people.

The board dismissed Goetz’ concerns, and sided with Scarborough Centre Councillor Glenn De Baeremaeker, who requested the report along with board

De Baeremaeker said the most serious problem with youth having access to the beverages comes when they decide to mix it with alcohol.

sometimes take actions that are not in their best interests.”

He pointed out that it’s more difficult to tell how inebriated one is if the alcohol is consumed along with a highly caffeinated energy drink.

And he pointed out that young people aren’t choosing to mix their beer with a cup of Earl Grey tea.

Polite Revolution against Fordian tyranny of Bad Behaviour a year old A year ago this week (and this day, as I write this on Tuesday) Toronto Council did a very bold, and also quite fearful thing. In a meeting specially called for the purpose, council voted to dethrone the mayor of the day, and select a new leader from among their own.

It is the closest a government in this city has come to open revolt, and one might hope, the closest it will ever come to happening again.

Looking back over the past year, it’s fair to say Toronto’s experiment with revolution has been at least a measured success.

Part of that may be that the roots of this particular revolution dovetailed so well with our national identity.

Not so much a Quiet Revolution, it was a Polite Revolution against a Fordian tyranny of Bad Behaviour.

Mayor Rob Ford and his brother Doug perhaps unwittingly stoked that revolution

david nickle the city during the meeting where council cut the mayor’s budget and stripped him of his powers, hollering at audience members, telling sex jokes and at one point knocking councillor Pam McConnell to the ground without so much as an excuse-me-ma’am.

Norm Kelly was a true Father of the Revolution as he embraced his enhanced role as deputy (and de-facto) mayor. He visited his shellshocked council colleagues one by one, said his pleaseand-thank-yous, even as the Mayor-in-Exile’s spiralling drama continued in the public corridors outside their offices.

For the most part, council managed to politely ignore the Ford brothers, in a quintessentially Canadian way: passing an inoffensive budget,

delaying an uncomfortable conversation about jets at the Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport, averting eyes at the prospect of hurrying ahead on city-wide contracting out of garbage collection.

Things got boisterous on the campaign trail, and Torontonians were only willing to have so much of it.

While some may have hankered for the old hoot-andholler approach to municipal governance, most turned away from Doug Ford and cast their votes with the one candidate on the planet who could give even Kelly a few lessons in table manners, the forcefully pleasant John Tory.

As it turns out, Torontonians are not only fond of the traditional Canadian values of peace, order and good government: after a year of exposure to it, we’re also fond of just a little peace and quiet.

The TTC has closed an elevator at Union Station earlier than anticipated following a construction mistake.

The University line lift was expected to close early next month to allow for the construction of a new elevator and escalator, part of a station-wide renovation scheduled for completion before the 2015 Pan Am/ Parapan Am Games.

But that changed when construction crews cut through the elevator’s hydraulic cables rendering it inoperable.

A temporary elevator will be in place by early December, and until then riders traveling south can go an additional stop to St. Andrew station – before switching trains and backtracking north to Union to use the Yonge line elevator.

STATION WI-FI DELAYED wKING

There’s more access than ever to public Wi-Fi throughout the TTC subway network. But the service has

BAI Canada is responsible for the installation of adsupported Wi-Fi that can be accessed for free on various station platforms, including Bloor, St. George and College.

King was supposed to have received the service by last week, but that’s been delayed. TTC spokesperson Brad Ross said that’s because more testing is required.

BAI Canada has promised to have all TTC subway stations Wi-Fi enabled by 2017.

EGLINTON LIGHT RAIL NEARS end wTUNNELLING

The city’s first light rail line celebrated a construction milestone of sorts last week.

It will be 2020 at the earliest when the Eglinton Crosstown LRT enters service, but tunneling of the line’s western alignment underneath Eglinton

Avenue West is nearing completion. Last week, Metrolinx announced the first of two tunnel borer machines , nicknamed Dennis, had reached its destination of Allen Road.

TTC should have suicide prevention subway platform doors: health board DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com Subway stations should all be retrofitted with platform edge doors as part of a city-wide plan to prevent suicides, says a report from chief medical officer of health Dr. David McKeown.

The report, approvied at Monday’s meeting of the Toronto Board of Health, offers up that among 12 recommendations that would get at the underlying causes and immediate risks of death by suicides for Torontonians.

The study looked at suicides in Toronto in 2009, which at 243 were more than four times the number of those who died from homicide and three times the number of those who died in motor vehicle incidents.

The numbers of suicides and attempted suicides on the TTC is smaller than that, but alarmingly consistent year to year. So far this year, eight people have died and 13 people attempted suicide. Since 1998, 197 people have taken their lives jumping from subway platforms.

According to the report, in other cities platform edge doors, which render the subway tracks inaccessible from the platform, have proven effective in preventing suicides.

On Nov. 17, the board of health heard from experts who said the barriers – along with other measures, such as more suicide barriers along high bridges and training for teachers and city workers in suicide prevention – could make a difference.

Isaac Sakinofsky, an emeritus professor of psychology at the University of Toronto, said he hwas worked with suicide survivors and had also worked to promote and fundraise for the Luminous Veil, a

suicide barrier on the Bloor Viaduct.

“It’s stopped suicides,” he said. “It’s stopped bodies hurling down on the school. On the Don Valley Parkway.”

Sarkinofsky said he believed setting up barriers on subway platforms would help a lot of potentially suicidal people step away from the irreversible decision to take their own life.

“A suicidal person has a scenario in their head, and if it’s not available to them, they don’t go somewhere else right away,” said Sakinofsky, who confessed that dealing with suicidal people “is the most poignant part of psychiatry. No one who attempts suicide isn’t desperate.”

Hi s p o s i t i o n w a s echoed by Lindsay Hill, who told the board that she had contemplated suicide on several occasions and always been saved by intervention or circumstance.

“Unless you have been in that situation, you cannot understand that it is a moment that comes upon you as the opportunity’s presented,” she said.

“If you are prevented from accessing that opportunity, your life will be saved at that moment.

I have been suicidal a number of times in my life and each time I have recovered, I have gone on, I have felt love and hope and joy and fulfillment.”

The board’s support of the report and strategy is another step toward building on-platform barriers across the system.

TTC estimate that it will cost $10 million per station to add platform-edge doors.

St. Theresa Shrine Catholic School is having a “Sucks No Socks” fundraiser campaign to benefit homeless youth shelters.

The fundraiser aims to collect items such as socks, toothbrushes, toothpaste, lip balm, hand cream and shampoo to be donated to homeless youth shelters across Toronto.

St. Theresa Shrine has participated in the Sucks No Socks fundraiser for four years and collected in excess of 2,000 items to donate to youth shelters.

Rosa Rana, 11, is the public relations leader for her school council and is challenging students to generate 1,000 items in this year’s drive, with a deadline

of Friday.

“Homeless youth have a difficult time surviving,” Rosa said.

“For example, they go through about five pairs of socks in a month, so we do what we can to help them.”

Sucks No Socks was started in 2010 by Jennifer Reginold while she was in high school to raise awareness about youth homelessness.

Her initiative was soon implemented in elementary and secondary schools in the Toronto Catholic District School Board.

This year at St. Theresa Shrine, teachers Sheila Brown and Angele Taffone are organizing the fundraiser and had praise for Rosa’s participation.

“Rosa is very active with the fundraiser,” Brown

said. “She’s making daily announcements, collecting items with her group, doing incentives for classes. She’s taken the project to heart.”

Reginold, now attending the University of Toronto, provided cash as an incentive: the class that raises the most items for donation will win the class prize.

Rosa remains committed to the campaign – she’s even asked her dentist for items to donate.

“If one person can inspire someone to act, then we can pass it one and keep inspiring people,” Rosa said. “It’s contagious enthusiasm.”

City’s community police liaison committees working on new image MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com Volunteer committees that work with Toronto’s police know you probably haven’t heard of them, and they want to change that.

“We could be more than what we’re doing,” Bruce Erskine told a meeting of the Toronto Police Services Board recently.

Erskine is a member of

a community police liaison committee, a civilian group attached to each police division in the city.

The CPLCs, as well as Community Consultative Committees, which deal with cultural or religious minority groups, all meet monthly, or at least four times a year.

A report CPLC representatives including Erskine presented to the board a year ago said the commit-

tees “are not well known,” adding many “are missing out on the opportunity of reaching out to the larger population,” and have “lackluster relationships” with the police force and each other.

Social media The committees are “not promoting community safety effectively,” and ought to make more use of Toronto’s

media, and social media to better promote themselves, the report says.

Erskine, who works with the CPLC for 22 Division in Etobicoke, said members of different committees decided a few years ago to “to get over the apathy that we were feeling at the time” and help each of the committees do a better job of helping police do theirs.

After writing the report, the

volunteers want to produce a guidebook for the committees that identifies best ways to work and makes them more visible in their communities, he said.

At the meeting, the board didn’t approve the request for $25,000 to help with the rebranding.

Though he welcomed the idea, Scarborough Councillor Michael Thompson said he could get a logo for CPLCs

designed by volunteers.

Thompson noted the report doesn’t speak about young people, and said many CPLC members are seniors and professionals, but many matters they deal with involve local youths. Young people in Scarborough have said they can’t get involved with a CPLC, said Thompson.

Scarborough Lady Blues tops at Quebec basketball tourney The Scarborough Lady Blues U-15 have done it again.

On the weekend of Nov. 7, 8 and 9 the Lady Blues entered the St. Laurent Express Tournament in Montreal and played up one age to U-16.

Despite playing against older girls, the Lady Blues took the tournament championship 77-30 over the St.

Francois Blizzard.

The tournament’s main match up was in the semifinals against St. Laurent. This was a close game until the last few minutes when the Blues took over.

With the addition of their two new players, Camille Clarin and Jenna Lawrence, the Lady Blues did not skip a

beat from their recent tournament victory in Florida.

Honest Ed’s partners with Bad Boy Grand opening of new superstore set for Thursday, November 20th

Two true Toronto originals are set to pair up in an Annex location already well-known to the city’s bargain hunters.

Lastman’s Bad Boy Superstore is set to move into a portion of Honest Ed’s left vacant with the departure of music store Sonic Boom Records.

According to Bad Boy CEO Blayne Lastman, the partnership between his company and the Mirvish family-owned Honest Ed’s was a natural fit. “(Honest Ed’s) approached me because the Mirvishes thought it was a great idea,” Lastman said.“I loved the idea as soon as I heard it. We met to discuss it the next day and had (an agreement) the day after.”

The 14,000 square foot location will feature furniture, appliances, electronics and mattresses. The new location

will cater to the residents living around the franchise’s latest location.

“We’ll have some urban Bad Boy in there – some condo and apartment-sized furniture,” he said.“It’s our first time in the downtown core.”

He noted, however, that the store would also feature goods designed to appeal to homeowners, pointing out that while many downtown residents are keen on spacesaving furniture, others want larger pieces to fill homes.

“It’s a great area, the Annex,” he said. “The average household income is over $100,000 and the average house is worth more than $1 million.”

The chain was founded by Mel Lastman, who built it up before entering into municipal politics. Blayne Lastman took

over the reins in the 1990s and has expanded the franchise across the GTA and beyond.

The Honest Ed’s site will be Bay Boy’s 11th location, though its stay at Bathurst and Bloor comes with a time limit. The Honest Ed’s store was sold last year to developer Westbank Properties and it is expected to shut its door for good perhaps as soon as the end of 2016.

“We believe it may take a little while longer for (Westbank) to start work on whatever they’re going to build there, so hopefully we can be there a little longer,” Lastman said.

The store will host a grand opening sale at its new location, 782 Bathurst Street, starting at 6 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 20, with more than $50,000 in giveaways.
