Dancers perform in traditional garb during Scarborough Tamil Fest events on Saturday in the Morningside and Finch avenues area. The inaugural festival drew an estimated crowd of about 90,000 over its two-day run last weekend.

Tamil Fest a smashing success MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com Tamil Fest turned out to be a smashing success for both the Tamil-Canadian community and Scarborough. Organizers of the first street festival in Morningside Heights thought they’d see 30,000 people

over the weekend, at most. Instead, about 90,000 turned up on a section of Morningside Avenue over Saturday and Sunday. Those crowds produced long lines at the vendors and midway rides, and some traffic and parking problems on nearby streets.

But they also make it very likely Tamil Fest – one of the first Tamil street festivals outside South Asia – will be back next year. “This is a milestone in our history,” David Poopalapillai, national spokesperson for the Canadian Tamil Congress, declared on Monday.

When the event between Finch Avenue and Nielson Road closed Sunday at 8 p.m. people were still lined up for midway rides and vendors, he said. Organizers had wanted Tamil Fest to introduce the Tamil community and its culture to Greater Toronto’s mainstream, >>>TAMIL, page 3

During the noon hour outside the Midland Avenue building, postal workers will set up mock community mailboxes and CUPW National President Mike Palecek will speak. “We’re trying to ensure that Roxanne James doesn’t win that riding,” Derek Richard, CUPW’s Ontario Region Coordinator, said Tuesday. James, running for a second term, could not be reached for comment. Canada Post management had said it is switching to community boxes because the corporation is bringing far fewer pieces of mail to Canadians, and ending door-to-door delivery will save $500 million a year >>>RALLY, page 8
