Organizers of the first street festival in Morningside Heights thought they’d see 30,000 people

over the weekend, at most.

Instead, about 90,000 turned up on a section of Morningside Avenue over Saturday and Sunday.

Those crowds produced long lines at the vendors and midway rides, and some traffic and parking problems on nearby streets.

But they also make it very likely Tamil Fest – one of the first Tamil street festivals outside South Asia – will be back next year.

“This is a milestone in our history,” David Poopalapillai, national spokesperson for the Canadian Tamil Congress, declared on Monday.

When the event between Finch Avenue and Nielson Road closed Sunday at 8 p.m. people were still lined up for midway rides and vendors, he said.

Food sellers and other vendors, including many local businesses, are satisfied, and many license plates parked near the festival were from the northeastern United States, Sri added.

“Scarborough was on the tips of many people’s tongues,” as they drove to Morningside Heights for the event, he said.

Highlights of Tamil Fest included traditional street entertainers, popular acts on stage, and a mobile museum chronicling the community’s rapid growth and its successes in overcoming adversity.

But there were times when a lack of nearby parking led to chaos and police couldn’t manage the traffic. “It was overwhelming for them,” acknowledged Poopalapillai, who said officers tolerated street parking so long as people didn’t block residents’ driveways or hydrants.

“They were lenient, but some people – there are

always some – they don’t follow these rules,” he said.

Sri said the festival encouraged carpooling, walking to the event, and taking the TTC as much as possible. but did not anticipate such high numbers.

If it returns to the same place next year, Tamil Fest would definitely need shuttle buses from Malvern

Town Centre, Tamil-owned strip malls in the area and Scarborough Town Centre, he said.

But Sri said it was important to stage the first Tamil Fest in Morningside Heights, which doesn’t have a rapid transit line, but has the highest concentration of TamilCanadians anywhere. “We wanted to go where our com-

munity was,” he said.

Canada’s Tamil commmunity, most coming from Sri Lanka during the island’s decades of civil war, grew in half a century to around 300,000, of which about 240,000 live within Greater Toronto.

abour Day is like the middle of the longest car trip you can remember: powering across the prairies, destination a little farther past the horizon than the trip’s beginning.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper got us started early – way back in August, packing up the federal election campaign bus in the dark and hauling us from our Sunday morning beds without so much as a bathroom break before hitting the highway.

And now here we are: in the midst of the longest federal election this century, that by the polls is anyone’s to win.

So far, for those of us paying attention and not distracted by our view the attack ads on the in-car DVD player, what we’ve had to occupy Serious us are strategic and tactical questions. questions The trial of suspended senator to consider Mike Duffy has laid bare some of the inner workings of Harper’s prime minister’s office (PMO), and we’ve puzzled over how the revelations might be used by the New Democrats or Liberals, or somehow minimized by the Conservatives.

We’ve watched Liberal leader Justin Trudeau dodge attack ads complimenting his hair, but questioning his readiness, then put in a good early debate performance, and wondered how that might affect the polls.

And we’ve tried to figure out what it is Tom Mulcair’s New Democratic Party is doing to edge into the lead in all those polls that keep dropping.

Well, it’s Labour Day coming up – not even halfway to the Oct. 19 election day – and it’s safe to say we’ve burned through all the simple driving games.

It’s time to start paying attention – and by that we don’t mean watching U.S. Republican leader hopeful Donald Trump on YouTube.

Voters in Toronto and across the country are facing some serious questions about the next five years. The three main parties are offering very different visions and plans to navigate this country down what could be some very rough roads.

Conservatives, Liberals and New Democrats sharing the driving up front will have strategies for us to consider. Although it may not seem like it here in the back seat, we, the voters, only have choices.

Blue Jays bandwagon finds new gear

T

o be labeled as someone who has jumped on a bandwagon is not exactly a compliment.

It means you’re an opportunist who has decided to associate yourself with a popular trend and that you’ll likely only hang around while the good times last.

Yet after seeing the Blue Jays bandwagon pick up hopper-on-ers in massive numbers, I’m not so sure that definition fits for said new arrivees. One gets the sense that, not only are they in it for the long haul, but that they’re intent on elevating the concept – and the game – to a whole new level.

The bandwagonning really kicked into high gear right after the trade deadline, when the Jays picked up Troy Tulowitzki, LaTroy Hawkins, David Price, Mark Lowe and Ben Revere, and the Rogers Centre immediately began playing to packed houses.

jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY But more than just the additional numbers on site, the atmosphere seems to be undergoing a transformation as well.

A percentage of the cause of this metamorphosis in fan behaviour can be attributed to the role of the original true blue die-hards, no doubt. But the newbies on board have to take a bow as well considering we’re now seeing things we’ve never seen before.

Take the spontaneous response to Edwin Encarnacion’s stunning three-homer, nine runs batted in performance Saturday. Several fans tossed their Blue Jays caps onto the field to acknowledge the feat. A move normally associated with hockey when a player scores a hat trick, it had

never been done before at a ballgame. That includes when Jays legend Carlos Delgado belted four home runs, in a game a decade ago.

Encarnacion, was all smiles when the caps were thrown right after, though he was puzzled by what it was all about. When catcher Dioner Navarro explained the longtime Canadian hockey tradition to him, the slugger said he was touched. He said he hoped to sign all the caps and return them to their owners.

Not that I’m encouraging fans to throw stuff on the field. I bring it up because it was a heartwarming gesture from a baseball fan base once thought of as being not involved enough when it came to reacting properly to the goings on.

This new breed of fans get it. There have been a multitude of similar game-savvy responses.

Numerous ovations,

salutes and curtain calls.

They’re on top of everything, and the players are clearly grateful.

That the team has been on fire has something to do with the current mania of course. But I don’t see it disappearing. The fans are clearly embracing their role.

Major League Baseball is known as the “The Show” and it really feels like it in the Rogers Centre these days. If you’re not lucky enough to get to the ballpark, not to worry. The same vibe oozes out of the TV telecasts and radio broadcasts. True, there may be no business, but thanks to the new breed of Jays fans, this “Show” business is quickly becoming a pretty catchy tune in its own right.

Local hospitals desperate for funding, panel told MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com Toronto’s big teaching hospitals are the Cadillacs of Ontario’s health-care system.

And Scarborough’s hospitals are a cheaper brand of car, Betty Wu-Lawrence, a nurse, told visiting members of a provincial panel this week.

“What are we? We are the Hyundai,” she said, to laughter.

Physicians, health advocates, social service groups – and last Wednesday night, ordinary residents – have told the panel Scarborough is starved of money and facilities.

Panelists heard the area’s three hospital campuses are crowded and crumbling, and some residents vote with their feet, travelling to North York or Markham when they need medical help.

The group toured The Scarborough Hospital’s (TSH) General and Birchmount sites and Rouge Valley Health

System’s (RVHS) Centenary, said John Ronson, a panelist who remembers Birchmount when it was run by the Salvation Army and called Scarborough Grace.

“We all looked at it, and said, ‘This place today has gone downhill,’” Ronson said at a meeting in the St. Paul’s L’Amoreaux Centre at Finch and Warden avenues.

Last year, TSH and RVHS abandoned a merger their administrations agreed to in principle largely because the province wouldn’t begin planning for possible hospital campuses in Scarborough and West Durham. In April, Health Minister Dr. Eric Hoskins gave the eight-member panel six months to tell him how to deliver hospital services in both those areas, including “infrastructure needs.”

“It’s a question of equity,” Denis Lanoue, former president of TSH’s community advisory council told last Wednesday’s meeting. “We need to tell them what we need: ‘You need to invest in

Scarborough.’”

Instead of competing, Scarborough’s three hospital campuses should be under a single leadership, Lanoue argued. “We are not Durham.

The needs of Durham are very different.”

The quality of health care is why many Scarborough residents came to Canada, said Wu-Lawrence, adding they want the province to support the same level of services at TSH and RVHS as it does at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre or St. Michael’s Hospital.

Panel Chairperson Dr. Barry McLellan, Sunnybrook’s CEO, wasn’t there, but Ronson and fellow panelists Jan Campbell, Trish Barbuto and Raymond Chung – the latter a Scarborough resident and co-founder of Hong Fook Mental Health Association – heard many hospital patients in Scarborough fall through cracks when they leave.

Many eventually return to hospital, community advocates said, because patients

it will be up to the minister to release the report, panelists hope it leads to action. “If there isn’t action, I’m going to be very, very angry.”

Scarborough-Agincourt MPP Soo Wong said the condition of the local hospitals is now her No. 1 issue. “This is no longer acceptable, and I want to make sure all six Scarborough MPPs are saying the same thing,” Wong told the meeting.

“You need to tell your neighbours. You need to speak now,” or when the panel’s report comes out, she added.

One Agincourt resident, Russell Mustachi, approved of the panel’s work, but doubted it would lead to significant change.“We’ve had these meetings before and nothing happens,” said Mustachi, who earlier had asked Campbell how many panelists lived in Scarborough. None do besides Chung.

are released without a home to go to, or are returning to an unhealthy home, or to one where no one is capable of caring for them.

Volunteers with Hong Fook and other groups said Scarborough needs more mental health services, including accommodation for youth in crisis and postdischarge day programs. The area, they said, also needs

more physicians and staff who can meet patient’s cultural and linguistic needs.

The panel will give Hoskins “high-level advice” but won’t do detailed planning, such as saying where a new hospital should be, Ronson said.

“It takes a long time to build a hospital. There are some immediate needs these communities have that can’t wait,” he said, adding though

The Olympic flame is hard to resist There are some temptations that are too much for a mayor to resist. Promising a tax freeze, or increases so low they may as well be? That’s a tough one. Devising a new transit plan that wasn’t on anybody else’s long-term infrastructure plan? Good luck saying no.

But those are all easy when it comes to the tempting, flickering flame of the Olympics. A mayor who says no to that would have to be made of sterner stuff than pretty well all of them.

So it is with John Tory, who appears to be following Oscar Wilde’s advice — which is to say, banishing temptation by yielding to it.

After a summer of feigning a wait-and-see attitude, Mayor Tory appears to be ready to go all in with a bid to host the 2024 Summer Olympics. There is a lot to like, politically at least, in being out-front in a bid for an Olympic Games.

It is, first and foremost, a fundamentally boosterish

david nickle the city enterprise: mayors and business leaders and often popular sports figures spend lunch-hours before cameras speaking highly of their city and basking in the glow of it.

Infrastructure projects find themselves at least nominally on a fast-track for funding. The city and its leadership floats along on dreams. Of course, dreams are what they are, and things can go nightmarishly wrong. Mel Lastman brought the city a pot-full of embarrassment when he made a cannibalism joke as he prepared to visit Africa to court IOC votes on Toronto’s 2008 bid. The only thing that might have been worse would have been actually winning the bid over Beijing, and ending up with a suite of unusable facilities and terrible debt as Montreal did in 1976.

Tory might be headed for a more ignominious defeat than that. There is serious question as to whether even his own council — even the portion of council that happily supports him — is at all supportive of going forward with the plan.

On Tuesday, members of the city’s budget committee had little time for launching a bid for 2024. Budget chief Gary Crawford made it clear he was “cautiously” withdrawing from the idea — the cost of simply launching a bid being a major barrier.

It looks like no matter how mightily Mayor Tory is tempted, the better judgement of his friends on council will prevail — and our mayor will find himself hauled back from the bright Olympic flame, before his wings get any more than a little singed.

Woman dies in house Scarborough teen shot and fire on Pennybrook killed while visiting Jamaica A woman was found dead Monday after a fire in a front upstairs bedroom of a home near Markham Road and Sheppard Avenue East.

Emergency services arrived at 5:18 p.m. to see flames in that room of 5 Pennybrook Lane.

The woman’s body was found after the two-alarm blaze was extinguished.

Toronto Fire Service said other people were in the house, but they were not on

the second storey and managed to escape.

The Ontario Fire Marshal is investigating.

24 trucks responded

Around 75 firefighters on 24 trucks responded to the fire, which caused $150,000 in damage and was confined largely to the bedroom.

The woman’s name was not released.

A man has been charged with murder in the weekend shooting death of Scarborough teen Ricardo Williams in Kingston, Jamaica.

The Jamaica Constabulary Force said residents at a wake on White Lane in Olympic Gardens, Kingston 11 heard explosions and discovered the 14 year old had been shot around 1:50 a.m. Sunday.

Williams was taken to

hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Later in the day, detectives named Omar James, also known as Judge, also of White Lane in Olympic Gardens, Kingston 11, as a person of interested in the case and asked him to report to the Hunts Bay police station by midday Monday. The 19 year old turned himself in to police Monday evening.

On Tuesday, James was charged with Williams’

murder.

“He was questioned in the presence of his attorney where he was subsequently arrested and charged,” the Jamaica Constabulary Force said in a news release.

There are reports that James and Williams are cousins.

Williams is believed to have been a student at West Hill Collegiate, having recently transferred from Pearson Collegiate.

Suspect sought in stabbing near Meadowvale and Hwy. 401 Toronto police say they have a suspect in the nonfatal stabbing of a man Monday afternoon near Meadowvale Road and Hwy. 401.

A man suffering from multiple wounds walked into the neighbourhood plaza at Meadowvale and Dean Park Road at 4:20 p.m., and was taken to hospital.

Police are looking for a 27-year-old suspect whose name, they say, is known.

Woman charged in airline ticket scam A woman from the Philippines has been charged with numerous fraud offences involving an alleged airline ticket scam.

Toronto police allege victims would book airline tickets, primarily to the Philippines, through the accused, who was believed to

be authorized to sell the tickets at a discounted price.

The accused accepted cash and credit card payments and victims never received tickets, police alleged, adding unauthorized purchases were made on their credit cards.

The estimated loss of the alleged scam is about $150,000.

Lorna Natalie Arcega, 38, of the Philippines, was arrested in Toronto Thursday, Aug. 27.

Charges were also laid by the Travel Industry Council of Ontario ( TICO) under the Travel Industry Act of Ontario.

Police said Arcega used different names and may also be known as Natalie.

Investigators believe there may be other victims.

Nyembe-Mafohla is described as 5’10, 160 pounds, with black hair. He has an Egyptian eye tattoo on his neck and upper chest.

Changes to the Ontario Highway Traffic Act, intended to crack down on distracted driving and provide more protections for cyclists, went into effect this week.

As of Sept. 1, drivers caught on their phones will face an increased fine of $490, as well as three demerit points, representing a much harsher penalty for distracted driving which has overtaken drinking and driving when it comes to causes for traffic fatalities.

The new rules, which were initially approved before last year’s provincial election, will also officially raise the fine for “dooring” a cyclist to $365, plus three demerit points.

Cyclists riding without the proper lights or reflectors will also see an increase in fines, from $20 to $110.

BIKE LANES extend in downtown wEAST

Work on extending the Adelaide and Richmond bike lanes is underway, the city has announced.

With the extension, the Richmond and Adelaide lanes will continue further east to

Sherbourne Street where they will connect with the existing protected cycle tracks going north and south.

The work is expected to be completed by the end of the month.

Bio-gas plant at Toronto Zoo receives provincial approval A proposed bio-gas plant at the Toronto Zoo jumped a final hurdle last week when Ontario’s government approved its operation.

ZooShare Biogas Co-operative signed an agreement with the zoo to start converting zoo animal manure and grocery store waste into compost and electricity in 2014, but construction dates were later revised.

The Toronto non-profit’s 500-kilowatt anaerobic digestor will replace the zoo’s open-air composting operation, and give the zoo $50,000 a year, or 10 per cent of its profits, for 20 years.

After a long technical review, Ontario’s environ-

ment ministry has issued renewal energy approval to ZooShare, which the company’s executive director called great news.

Start construction “With this in hand, we can confidently say that we will start construction in the spring and be up and running by late 2016 or early 2017,” Daniel Bida said Friday, Aug. 28.

ZooShare, which recruited more than 300 community investors, already has a feed-in tariff contract from the Ontario Power Authority for power the plant will produce.

United Way launches $100-million fundraising campaign DOMINIK KUREK dkurek@insidetoronto.com The newly formed United Way of Toronto and York Region has an ambitious goal in its inaugural fundraising campaign, aiming to raise $100 million.

This funding will help support 220 partner agencies in 10 municipalities from Toronto in the south to Georgina in the north.

That goal will be met by the communities working together, said the 2015 campaign cabinet chair Mark Wiseman, president and CEO of the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board, before hundreds of guests at the CNIB Ontario building on Bayview Avenue in Toronto Tuesday.

Guests included supporters and members of partner agencies from across York Region and Toronto.

“We truly are a united United Way across Toronto and York Region.

That’s the first time we’ve been able to say that, and that’s fantastic,” Wiseman said.

The work of the United Way will include more than 25,000 volunteers in more than 760 workplaces across the city and York Region.

“This is an era in which collaboration is going to mean more than anything else in terms of our ability to collectively get things done,” he said.

“This is how people live their lives.

They don’t care if they’re on the TTC or York Regional Transit, they just care that they can find a way to get to work.”

He said the same is true when it comes to helping people. Tory said Toronto relies greatly on the United Way to help make a stronger city and urges people to dig into their pockets to contribute. He said this

will help make an already good city, even better. “What makes us different here and what people noticed when they came here for the Pan Am Games, no matter how the city looks, even the sort of wobbly antennas and things like that, they noticed most importantly how we lived here, that we respect each other, we look after each other, we care about each other. We don’t just say that. We actually do it,” Tory said.

“The centre of that, the fulcrum of that is the United Way.” President and CEO of the United Way Susan McIsaac agreed with the need for unity.

“We’ve had this boundary for the last 60 years of our history, which was Steeles Avenue. We wouldn’t go north, they wouldn’t come south.

But now, our donors and volunteers work across those borders, always with the mind, always with the thought we have to do what’s best for our region,” she said.

The United Way of Toronto and York Region is the largest privatesector supporter of social services in the Greater Toronto Area.

First KothuFest to take place at Albert Campbell Square In Sri Lanka and parts of Scarborough, kothu roti is as well-known a street food as the hot dog.

It’s also as versatile a dish as you’re likely to find, as at least 10 kothu vendors aim to prove during the area’s first KothuFest.

“The possibilities are endless,” said Terrance Siva, a spokesperson for the outdoor event in Albert Campbell Square on Sunday, Sept. 13 from noon to 8 p.m.

A Sri Lankan dish, kothu is known by aficionados in Scarborough’s Tamil-Canadian community for combining chopped-up roti, sizzling eggs, and different spices - mixed up with anything from octopi to mutton.

But Siva said some people are now chopping up bread for kothu instead of roti - and that’s OK, too.

“Everyone can make it, and they can make it their own,” he said, adding KothuFest organizers told each vendor to “bring your creation and make sure people see how unique it is.”

It’s just coincidence KothuFest happens two weekends after the first Tamil Fest, a north Scarborough street festival which introduced many people to Sri Lankan Tamil foods, including kothu. Poverty issues meeting tonight in Scarborough A meeting tonight aims to recruit Scarborough residents “to tackle poverty and build prosperity.”

It could have the added effect of reviving a group that will be able to speak for Scarborough on these issues. City council adopted an interim poverty-reduction plan in July called TO (Toronto) Prosperity

and could finalize the plan this fall.

At the Scarborough Civic Centre tonight, Community Voices in Scarborough On the Road TO Prosperity will try to get people’s thoughts on issues – such as jobs, affordable housing, social services and public transit – and how they

could be addressed by both the City of Toronto and federal governments.

New road safety rules now in effect for drivers As of Tuesday, Ontario drivers are facing tougher penalties for distracted driving as new safety rules come into effect.

Toronto police, along with OPP officers and provincial officials, held an event Tuesday morning at Fairview Mall to announce the new measures.

Penalties for distracted driving will include an increased set fine of $490 and three demerit points upon conviction. The previous fine ranged from $60 to $500.

Novice drivers will receive a minimum 30-day suspension, and other penalties, for the first conviction and longer suspensions for subsequent convictions.

A novice driver is one with a G1, G2, M1, M2, M2-L or M2-M licence.

The “dooring” of cyclists will carry an increased set fine of $365 and three demerit points upon conviction. Previous fines were $60 to $500.

New rules will also require drivers to leave a one-metre distance where possible when passing cyclists, or they may face the penalty of a $110 set fine and two demerit points.

Cyclists who don’t use the required

bicycle lights and reflectors face a higher set fine of $110. The previous fine was $20.

The bike itself must have a white front light and a red rear light or reflector if people ride between half an hour before sunset and half an hour after sunrise, and white reflective tape on the front forks and red reflective tape on rear forks.

Tow trucks Drivers must now leave a safe passing distance between themselves and tow trucks stopped on the roadside to provide assistance.

Failing to slow down and move over for a tow truck can result in a set fine of $490.

School buses will be more recognizable – they will now be the only buses permitted to be chrome yellow.

Drivers failing to stop for a school bus can be fined up to $2,000 and receive six demerit points for a first conviction.

Crohn’s disease is a condition found in every one in 150 Canadians that inflames the intestines and is often triggered by stress.

Francis Libermann Secondary School teacher Joseph D’Addario has been selected as the winner of the fourth annual AbbVie IBD Scholarship.

“It’s nice to know that there are organizations to help students achieve their potential and enact change in scholastic and professional communities,” D’Addario said.

AbbVie IBD Scholarship program supports Canadian students living with Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis, helping them to continue their academic journey through scholarships.

“I want to create the utmost change that is enactable as a teacher,” D’Addario said.

Born and raised in Scarborough, D’Addario was just a 19-year-old undergraduate student at the University of Toronto in 2006 when he

an educational grant of $5,000.

Despite being faced with the immense challenge of being diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia earlier this year, following his initial diagnosis of Crohn’s disease, D’Addario has managed to find an unyielding passion for education.

D’Addario is marching ahead and looking to complete a masters of arts in disability history where he hopes to gain the knowledge needed to implement equitable and accessible education for students with disabilities.

His success in battling his health challenges is, one part the support of his family and friends and one part his refusal to surrender to negativity.

“My friends and family have kept me as positive as possible, they have been a great support network,” D’Addario said.

Academic success D’Addario recalls the slew of new accommodations that had to be made for his academic success.

Late nights cramming for exams and school-induced stress are not the most ideal ingredients to add to the mix of a student living with Crohn’s disease, but seeing others with similar bouts and their success has helped him in his journey, he said.

The AbbVie IBD Scholarship program has recognized 10 students across the country who are struggling with Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis.

“I’d really love to see the Olympics in North America but now that Los Angeles has put In a bid, a very competitive bid, I don’t know if we’d be able to succeed,” said budget chief Gary Crawford (Scarborough Southwest).

“It would cost $50 to $60 million, and I cannot commit city funds to that. I’m very cautiously holding back supporting it.”

Crawford was joined by other councillors on the budget committee throwing water on the potential bid, which Mayor John Tory has shown interested in at least

applying for.

Tory said he will send a letter to the International Olympic Committee as a “place-holder” to indicate Toronto’s interest.

But just weeks after the end of the Toronto 2015 Pan Am/ Parapan Games, Crawford and others want to see numbers as to how much the city benefited.

Crawford also said there needs to be some show of support from other levels of government.

“If the province isn’t supportive and the federal government isn’t supportive… well if I see what they’re bringing to the table we can have a discussion but there’s nothing here right now.”

Etobicoke Centre Councillor John Campbell, who also sits on the budget committee and frequently supports Mayor Tory’s ini-

tiatives, said the city should just leave the 2024 Olympic bid alone.

“I think the deadline should come and go, I don’t think it’s going to serve the City of Toronto at all,” he said. “In the end I don’t think we should pursue the Olympics because I don’t think we should get the Olympics. I think it will be an albatross.”

Campbell said that the Pan Am Games aren’t a realistic test run for an event the size of the summer Olympics.

“The Pan Am Games were a high school track meet compared to the Olympics,” he said.

York Centre Councillor James Pasternak, meanwhile, held out hope for what would be a first cross-border Olympic bid.

He said that the city should continue partnering with Buffalo, New York.

Oakridge residents can vote on community improvements MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com For the Scarborough neighbourhood of Oakridge, an experiment in “participatory budgeting” comes to a bittersweet end this month.

Pa r t o f Wa rd 3 5 Scarborough Southwest, Oakridge was classified by city council last year as one of Toronto’s Neighbourhood Improvement Areas (NIAs).

It’s one of Toronto’s poorer neighbourhoods, but city officials this spring promised $150,000 for minor improvements in Oakridge, encouraging residents to put ideas forward.

Their participation means some projects community members wanted can be built, but the limited budget ensures most won’t be.

Residents who are 14 or older will get to choose from the following list: • Oakridge Park Lighting

Improvements ($90,000) - six more light posts in the north part of the park.

• Prairie Drive Improvement Package ($60,000) - replacing a broken water fountain with a water bottle filling station; three new light posts.

• New Shaded Community Gathering Space in Oakridge Park( $70,000) - a square pavilion with benches near the playground on the north side.

• New Shaded Area with Benches in Prairie Drive Park ($78,000) - a square pavilion near the wading pool on the east side.

• Pharmacy Bridge Beautification West of Victoria Park Subway Station ($75,000) - a new mural painted by a professional artist through the StART (Street Art Toronto) program.

• Gateway to Teesdale Beautification ($100,000) - redesigning the corner of Teesdale Place and Pharmacy

Avenue to include a new seating area, landscaping and decorative paving stones.

• Benches Along Danforth Avenue between Madelaine Avenue and Scotia Avenue ($90,000) - adds benches on Victoria Park Avenue, Madelaine, August Avenue, Leyton Avenue.

Hoping to knock it out of the park, the boys are anticipating to compete in the finals, which are set for Labour Day Monday.

“The important thing is that they do their best. We have some stand-out players,” Angelakos said.

Tom Bartsiokas’ latest book is a biography of a retired women’s national hockey team player Geraldine Heaney, often referred to as the Bobby Orr of women’s hockey.

And that’s entirely appropriate as Bartsiokas’ first book in 2012 was a biography of another retired women’s national team hockey player Angela James, who was dubbed during her prime as the Wayne Gretzky of women’s hockey.

“Since I wrote about the Wayne Gretzky of women’s hockey why not follow it up by the Bobby Orr of women’s hockey,” said Bartsiokas, during a recent phone inter-

view. A lifelong Toronto east ender, Bartsiokas now lives with his family in Riverdale.

At t h e b e g i n n i n g o f Heaney’s career, she also scored what has become one of the iconic goals in women’s hockey, even making Hockey Night in Canada’s Top 10 goals for the 1989 to ’90 season.

Her eventual winning goal in Canada’s 5-2 win over the United States in that season’s world championships was in Bobby Orr fashion – flying through the air while the puck flew into the net – and the iconic photo fittingly is on the front cover of the book.

The United Church minister, who passed away last May at age 85, started the Frontiers Foundation, which since the 1960s has sent volunteers to fix and build houses in Northern Ontario. It was called Operation Beaver.

When an offshoot of Catto’s group, the New Frontiers Aboriginal Residential Corporation, built subsidized apartments on Riverdale’s Coxwell Avenue they called their building Amik _ the Ojibwe name for beaver.

Now, the next two Amik projects in Scarborough are less than a year away from welcoming their first tenants.

Both Amiks are four-storey buildings with a wood frame. Their apartments must be rented at 20 per cent below average market rent, but tenants must prove their aboriginal heritage (the Coxwell Amik is half aboriginal, but built under a different arrangement).

Amik II, at 3087 Danforth Ave., which was a used car lot, has 20 units and a storefront which could become Native art gallery.

Concussion symptoms can include headaches, nausea, sensitivity to light and noise, difficulty concentrating and remembering, difficulty falling asleep and staying asleep, sadness, anger and irritability.

If a concussion is suspected, the person should stop studying, working or playing, see their doctor for diagnosis and rest their brain and body.

To help parents and young people better understand symptoms and coping strategies of concussions, Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital developed an online handbook geared toward management and recovery.

Launched recently, Concussion and You: A Handbook for Parents and Kids is a free, 28-page guide developed by youth concussion experts at Bloorview’s Concussion Centre.

Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital offers free online handbook to help people manage and recover from concussions.

The handbook is not geared toward athletes, but anyone – young and old – who suffered a concussion, Reed said.

“You can get a concussion from sport, tobogganing, walking down the street,” he said.

“The strategies can 100 per cent be used by anyone.”

According to the handbook, brain injury may happen because of a hit to the head, face, neck or somewhere else on the body.

Empowering Scott Oakman, executive director of the Greater Toronto Hockey League (GTHL), said his organization fully supports the handbook, which he called an empowering tool.

“It’s very user-friendly, it’s very thorough and it’s done in a way that’s understandable,” he said, adding the handbook has been posted on the GTHL website and sent out with emailed newsletters.

“We want to keep the information front and centre.”

Oakman said the GTHL has held seminars to better educate coaches and officials on concussions, and body checking in A level hockey is being eliminated starting this season, which begins Sept. 14.
