"This is really about building Scarborough," says Janice Hayes, executive director of YouthLink, which is preparing to turn its offices on 747 Warden Ave. into a transitional shelter for up to 53 youths.

The agency, which runs a walk-in counseling clinic at the building north of St. Clair Avenue, is inviting the public to a celebration barbecue there this Saturday, May 20, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

CHRIS SIMON chris.simon@simcoe.com The environment is a bit like an aging relative - everybody wants to keep it healthy, but there’s plenty of bickering on exactly how to do it.

At Innisfil’s Nantyr Shores Secondary School, the Enviroventure specialist high skills major program is shaping young minds around the notion they can still alter the course of the warming planet. The class is located in a portable, a few steps away from the school football field. The room is messy because it is teeming with teenagers more worried about saving the planet than tidying up their own world. They have been working on models of sustainable homes and just returned from the Change Your World conference at York University.

A few inches of snow had fallen in the early hours of this spring day, covering grass shoots that had begun to pop up from the field.

Within a day the snow was gone again, as the temperature fluctuated.

"At our school, we have a lot of environmentally conscious students," Grade 12 student Maegan Damianakis said. "We want to see things change; we don’t want to adapt to the crappy situation going on around us."

"We’re trying to speed up our processes, but it’s not going as fast as climate change," added Grade 11 student Johnathan Purkis. "I’m hopeful for change."

The students believe that, if everyone pitches in, positive change can be achieved. However, many leading scientists seem less optimistic.

In the Greenhouse Gas Progress Report 2016, the Environmental Commissioner of Ontario noted climate change will be less severe here than in other areas of the world, but pushed the need to prepare for the inevitable changes ahead.

ruptive and expensive changes to our environment and economy," the report states. "But we can still influence how destructive those changes will be. By working together, we can still protect much of what we love."

Climate change is already increasing the risk of wildfires, crippling cold-water fish habitats, stressing moose populations and helping invasive species flourish in Ontario. The outdoor winter sports season is shortening. Severe heat and drought have damaged crops and affected water supplies.

In 2015, carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere were the highest they’ve been in at least 800,000 years. While Ontario lowered its

carbon footprint to six per cent below 1990 levels in 2014, mostly through the closing of coal-fired power generating stations, it still relies on fossil fuels for 80 per cent of its energy. Transportation represents the largest and fastest growing share of emissions.

Blair Feltmate, head of the Intact Centre on Climate Adaptation at the University of Waterloo, says the temperature is up, on average, 2 to 3C in southern Ontario, when compared to pre-industrial levels.

For every 1C increase, the atmosphere holds seven per cent more moisture.

The result is more extreme weather, including microburst downpours and ice storms - events communities across the province

have experienced in recent years.

"It is here to stay; it is irreversible," Feltmate said. "We can slow it down, which we should do, but it will not stop it. Climate change has happened, it is happening and it is going to continue to happen."

He says governments need to immediately adopt standards and polices that reflect the impact of climate change and ensure all new infrastructure and residential developments comply. Climate models can be used to determine future floodplains and larger water pipes should be installed during the construction of new subdivisions to lower the risk of future disaster.

At this current pace, Ontario could see average temperatures climb by another 3 to 4C within decades. While the majority of Ontario’s electricity is produced by nuclear, hydro and renewable sources - leaving no carbon footprint and more energy efficient vehicles have been introduced in recent years, that good work is undone by gridlock on local roadways.

"All the energy efficiency has gone out the window by having people sit in traffic endlessly," Feltmate said. "We’ve just got too many people concentrated in one locality. Building a relief line on a subway or getting more GO Transit cars in the morning isn’t going to compensate for the fact we’re going to have another 1.3 million people in this region in the nottoo-distant future."

Federal, provincial and municipal governments have taken positive steps to address climate change, but action is about "damage control," rather than "righting the ship," he stressed.

Still, others say the little steps, when added up, will help humanity complete the race.

"I don’t think being hopeless is the solution," Enviroventure teacher Mark Gaynik said. "You got to think of what kind of world we want to live in. It’s important to advocate and be out there."

The Ontario’s Cabinet is reportedly in meetings this week, discussing dramatic changes which could affect the lives of millions, and Bernard can hardly wait.

"It’s looking good," she said. "The momentum is growing right now with the provincial election (coming) next June."

Responding to the province’s Changing Workplaces Review, $15 and Fairness asked for a hike to $15-anhour minimum within two years, at least seven paid sick days, three weeks of paid vacation, and guaranteed emergency unpaid leave.

Surprisingly, Cabinet is said to be considering approving all of that.

"We certainly urge the government to do the right thing," said Mary Gellatly, a community legal worker at Parkdale Community Legal Services, who said the changes are needed to deal with a province-wide shift towards more low-wage and precarious jobs.

Ten years at a non-profit daycare in Scarborough had earned Bernard no benefits, and she found herself paying for a cast, crutches and a walking boot before trying, unsuccessfully, to return to work.

When she caught ringworm and pink eye from the children, her employer, who offered Bernard no paid sick days, also refused to pay for medications. "Out of pocket you would have to buy the drops for your eye or the cream for your arm," Bernard said Tuesday.

Such treatment left a bad taste, and she later became an organizer for the $15 and Fairness campaign, which has pushed the province hard to extend benefits to all workers and raise Ontario’s minimum wage.

It’s going to be the last budget that Toronto Council and Mayor John Tory approve before they go to the voters in the fall of next year. And while it’s looking a little easier than last year in some ways, in important ways it’s going to be more difficult than ever.

Like last year, Wallace has asked for across-theboard restraint from city departments and agencies.

Not a 2.6 per cent cut this time, just a freeze in spending at 2017 levels. When he spoke to Toronto’s budget committee May 11, he made it very clear that he didn’t expect every department to come in with a zero spending increase. But it’s important to try.

That’s because, he noted, there is very little wiggle room this year for council to increase spending beyond inflation, and maintain a property tax increase at or below the rate of inflation. And Mayor Tory and council have made it clear that there’s no appetite for an increase any higher than that on property taxpayers.

Council made use of that wiggle room in 2017 – among other things, approving a budget that anticipated robust increases in the revenue from the municipal land transfer tax and therefore boosted revenue.

That was a good bet in 2017 but not necessarily so in 2018, when market-cooling measures approved at Queen’s Park could put a damper on Toronto’s blazing hot real estate market. Wallace has been warning since his arrival that Toronto’s reliance on an ever-growing land transfer tax could eventually be its fiscal undoing.

That warning seems more apt than ever right now.

It all leads to exactly the kind of debate that survival-minded politicians don’t want to have coming up to an election: do we cut services or raise taxes?

In the past, faced with these choices city politicians have had a third option: extend a begging hand to the provincial government for help to balance the books at the last minute. But again, what worked 10 years ago is less likely to work now, with the Ontario Liberals facing their own day of reckoning with Ontario voters in 2018.

In 2018, there’s one more option: have an honest conversation with taxpayers about the type of city they want to live in. Explain what that city costs.

And then, hand them a bill and a ballot at the same time.

A reckoning may come for our worst landlords The front of 500 Dawes Rd. is a busy place during dinner hours. People are in and out with children, dogs, groceries, deliveries.

But this East York building is known across the city as one of the worst in Toronto, a reputation it’s had for years.

That’s an opinion you can base on the hundreds of orders the city issued against the management of 500 Dawes, a management reluctant to fix anything the right way.

Janet Davis, local councillor, stood in the lobby last week, asking passing tenants about repairs, letting them know they can call 311 about them. She does this in other buildings, but 500 Dawes "is the No. 1."

That may change. A reckoning may come for bad Toronto landlords, because on July 1 a new bylaw goes into effect.

Landlords must give the city plans on repair, pest control, maintenance. They’ll be required to post information too: the lobby corkboard at 500 Dawes will have to hold more than redirected mail and flyers for airport taxis.

Until now, the city could pressure landlords, but had no hammer. Soon, it will be more expensive for them to ignore the law, says Geordie Dent of the Federation of Metro Ten-

ants’ Associations.

"It’s not like July 1 bing - a magic wand is going to be waved," he says, but the new bylaw comes with penalties.

"This building is definitely, definitely on the radar."

Tenant activists fought desperately for the new bylaw. Many, like Geri Stevens, paid a price.

She’s been active since 2011 in 500 Dawes, and she’s leaving soon, worn out. "It’s a horrible, horrible building," says Stevens.

Cheap rents are why many tenants stay. If there was any justice, many wouldn’t have to.

Bear shooting highlights need for more services: group ANDREW PALAMARCHUK apalamarchuk@insidetoronto.com The weekend fatal shooting of a black bear in Scarborough highlights the need for more wildlife services in the city, an animal rescue charity says.

Toronto police were forced to put down the bear at about 2 a.m.

Saturday, May 13 due to public safety concerns after it was found walking into backyards on Kenhatch Boulevard, a residential street in the McCowan Road and Finch Avenue area.

"We can tranquilize bears and the Toronto Zoo can tranquilize bears but neither of us are open 24 hours a day with those capabilities," said Nathalie Karvonen, executive director of Toronto Wildlife Centre. "It would be nice, especially if we start to have more incidents like this, to have more conversation with the city about how we can have a little bit more of a plan (to have) a 24-hour response."

When police deal with a call involving an animal, they normally call Toronto Animal Services, which would often then call TWC if the incident involves a difficult animal rescue.

"If it had happened at 2 in the afternoon, we would’ve been able to help tranquilize the bear," Karvonen said. "When these kinds of things happen at 2 in the morning, I think it really speaks to the need for more of a wildlife service response in Toronto, not the police because the police obviously are not trained in wildlife issues so they only have a handful of options at their disposal."

The 200-to-300-pound bear was first spotted, ironically near Beare Road (near Steeles Avenue and Scarborough Pickering Townline), at about 10 p.m. Friday.

But police didn’t locate the animal until about 12:30 a.m. Saturday when they were called to Kenhatch Boulevard for reports of a bear banging on a door and knocking over garbage.

Det. Sgt. Gerry Heaney of 42 Division. "There were several attempts with animal control, with provincial agencies, and unfortunately there was no one available (to capture the bear)."

Heaney said there "wasn’t much more" police could do. "We couldn’t contain it any further. It was going from backyard to backyard," he said. "The last thing we want to do is put down a perfectly healthy bear if there are other alternatives, and there wasn’t."

the bear had likely travelled south to Scarborough through the Rouge Valley ravine system.

"Typically large animals like that would move along what you call wildlife corridors," she said.

"You don’t have something like a bear that makes his way down from up north through subdivisions and by walking along Yonge Street."

Animals also often travel through man-made corridors such as railroad tracks and hydro fields.

"There’s a massive diversity of wildlife in Toronto," said Karvo-

nen, noting TWC works with more than 270 different species, ranging from birds like swans and woodpeckers to mammals like coyotes, foxes, white-tailed deer and beavers.

Then there are reptiles and amphibians such as turtles, snakes, frogs and toads.

Most people though don’t see these animals or realize they’re living practically right in their backyards.

"There are (about) eight different species of owl.

Nobody ever sees an owl.

They’re mostly active at night, and in the daytime they camouflage themselves on the bark," Karvonen said. "You could probably walk right past them, four feet away, and you wouldn’t notice them."

And by maintaining and creating green space in Toronto, we may be attracting the wildlife.

"There are constantly projects where we’re re-naturalizing areas, we’re re-naturalizing schoolyards, we’re creating green roofs, we’re creating green terraces on buildings, we’re converting old abandoned lots into wildlife, so we’re basically hanging out the welcome sign for wildlife," Karvonen said. "It’s wonderful that we have all these green spaces, but I really do feel because of that there needs to be a little bit more thought given to the wildlife."

TWC, headquartered in North York, cares for up to 5,000 injured, sick or orphaned wild animals.

The charity hopes to build a $30 million wildlife hospital and relocate its headquarters to within Rouge National Urban Park in Scarborough.

If built, it would be the largest wildlife hospital in the country.

In October 2012, Toronto and Region Conservation Authority approved in principle a proposal from TWC for a long-term lease in the Rouge National Urban Park to allow TWC to build a permanent facility to help wildlife and educate the public about wildlife issues.

On Friday, May 19, the TRCA board of directors will consider providing more assistance to the project by helping to secure funds from different levels of government.

Stanford Downey Architects have donated their services to the project and assembled a team of volunteer consultants to help with the planning and design phase of the project, which is already underway.

Montgomery joined with former Scarborough mayor Joyce Trimmer and former councillor Ron Moeser to fight to preserve the Rouge Valley against development. She also chaired Scarborough’s budget committee, and when Trimmer was elected mayor in 1988, served as Trimmer’s deputy mayor.

A celebration of the life of former councillor and deputy mayor of Scarborough Edith Montgomery was held Tuesday, May 16 at the Scarborough Civic Centre.

A pioneering politician who fought just as hard for the Rouge Park as she did to balance the books of the old Municipality of Scarborough, Montgomery died on April 25 at Scarborough General Hospital following an illness. She was 75.

Friends say Montgomery was honest, sometimes to the point of being abrasive. But she was one of the best defenders of the place she grew up in, "a true daughter of Scarborough," said Maureen Prinsloo, a councillor for 15 years.

JASMINE HUI jhui@metroland.com Students from three different schools gathered inside Tarragon Theatre’s Extraspace room last Friday to prepare for their ’WORDS WITH A ZED FESTIVAL’ that features five different plays written by young playwrights in Toronto.

Students from Northern Secondary School, R.H. King Academy and Agincourt Collegiate Institute met each other for the first time that day, in preparation for their performance, the next day.

The festival celebrates the premiere of: Fighting Silence by Jenn Boulay, The Fictional Reality of Lennox Tate by Sara Durante, The Waiting Room by Sarah Hilton, Chance Encounters by Tyisha Murphy and Sunset Constellations by Ruby Urlocker.

Sarah Hilton wrote ’The Waiting Room’ and said the whole experience of writing

and seeing her play come to life was surreal.

"It’s a strange feeling giving a part of me to someone else," Hilton said. "I love seeing my actors interpret it in their own way and I get to see it in ways that I never interpreted it in before."

Undergoing only six months of collaborative development, organizers and students ran into many difficulties trying to get the production ready.

Alice Kazal, a student at Northern and music director for Sunset Constellations said her school joined the play approximately two weeks ago.

"It’s been a wild ride," Kazal said.

"My drama teacher got called a week and a half ago, asking if we could do staging or readings for this play that they had. She called six of us down to do the staging of it and we talked about it a lot for a week and a half, really intensely."

the actors won’t be able to put in 100 per cent of their emotions, because a lot of the content matters that I talk about, you really need to bring emotion to the table, otherwise, it won’t work. I have faith in them because they’re all serious about it."

Noelle Semaan and Malini Khotsiphom from R. H. King are both in the Fighting Silence play.

Their school had to fill in for another group last minute after they dropped out of the production.

"We’re not doing the full staging of it," Noelle said.

"We’re just doing the recovery."

Malini said there were a few bumps in the beginning, but she trusts everyone.

"We’re all doing the reading of these parts, but we’re still doing a dramatization of it," Malini said.

"The play itself is about discrimination and how people are treated at the University of Toronto."

Dr. Lionel Marks de Chabris, an addiction and pain management consultant based in Sudbury, Ont., will speak about the role medical cannabis can play in chronic pain management at The Caregiver Show in June.

Since 2007, the emergencytrained physician has prescribed medical cannabis to patients with long-term chronic pain who’ve tried multiple medications.

"I think people need to know about medical cannabis as an option," Marks de Chabris said, adding it is an "adjunct medicine" to other medications. "It’s not for everyone. It’s not a panacea. For people it seems to help, it helps.

"What we have right now isn’t great. The best medications, you get about 30 to 50 per cent reduction in pain and some improved function. More options, particularly with low side-effects and no risk of a fatal outcome, are beneficial."

Cannabis oil is Marks de Chabris’ preference since it provides an exact dose and a slow, steady release to control symptoms for eight to 12 hours versus two to three hours with vaporizing.

There are 43 Health Canada-licensed medical cannabis produc-

ers in Canada, including CanniMed. Medical cannabis comes in two strains: CBD (cannabidiol), and THC, which has psychoactive properties.

Finding the most-effective strain, and possible combination of CBD and THC, is individual and requires patience – and is not the entire puzzle, he said.

"What is really going to make a difference is yoga, tai chi, water aerobics, walking and stretching

and using the muscles," he said.

"Meditation, stress management, smoking cessation, dealing with depression, anxiety, PTSD has to be done. It’s like a three-legged stool. You have medicine, but you also have the mind and movement."

Book a counselling appointment and come prepared with studies and research if you want to talk to your doctor about medical cannabis, he advised.

Multilingual? Canada needs to catch up MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com Ontario’s education system is out of date, and teaching children in multiple languages is a step to turning things around, says a Toronto separate school trustee.

St. Rene Goupil Catholic School in North Scarborough will be the city’s first multilingual school this September, the board and Mike Del Grande announced last week.

"We’re being outmaneuvered by the rest of the world," said Del Grande, adding when travelling he’s amazed at how well people communicate in different languages.

In Switzerland, for example, students are taught in French, German, Italian and English, said the board’s trustee for Scarborough-North York.

Starting in fall 2017, St. Rene Goupil Catholic Schoolwill be transitioning into the Toronto Catholic District School Board’s first multi-language school.

The hospital is also waiting for arrangements which will start construction of a Bridletowne community hub in North Scarborough, which would house its large dialysis and chronic kidney disease programs.

At an announcement for staff and volunteers in Centenary this month, Scarborough Centre MPP Brad Duguid continued to maintain the province’s promise of new facilities: "We have an opportunity to provide a brand new hospital structure that will be state of the art," he said, adding he expected some short and medium range projects for SRH "to be announced very soon."

Buller will lead what is now the third largest community hospital in Ontario, with more than 5,000 employees and 1,000 physicians.

Created by a merger ordered by Ontario Health Minister Dr. Eric Hoskins last year from the two-campus Scaborough Hospital and the former Rouge Valley Health System’s (RVHS) Centenary site in Scarborough, the merged entity needs extensive capital funds to renovate overcrowded emergency rooms and obsolete operating rooms.

Those projects weren’t mentioned in the 2017 Ontario budget, but Buller’s appointment, confirmed Friday, is expected to start the planning for them in earnest.

Notice of Commencement and Public Meeting #2 Lakeshore East Rail Corridor Expansion (Don River to Scarborough GO Station) – Transit Project Assessment Process To keep up with our growing region, Metrolinx, an agency of the Province of Ontario, is transforming the way the region moves by delivering the largest transit infrastructure program in Canadian history to keep the region moving today and tomorrow. The Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) is now home to nearly 7 million people and heading towards 9 million by 2041. To address the urgent transit needs of the GTHA, the Province of Ontario committed to implement more GO service and make other infrastructure improvements to the GO system to help create new transit connections and faster service across the region. By 2025, electric trains will be running every 15 minutes or, all day and in both directions, within the most heavily travelled sections of the GO network.

The Project Metrolinx is completing a Transit Project Assessment Process (TPAP) under Ontario Regulation 231/08 made under the Environmental Assessment Act, to evaluate expanding and improving the Lakeshore East GO rail corridor between Don River and Scarborough GO Station in the City of Toronto.

The project involves: • Addition of a 4th track between the Don River Bridge and the Scarborough GO Station • Widening of three (3) bridges: Woodbine Avenue, Warden Avenue and Danforth Avenue • Modifying Underneath the Birchmount Road Bridge • Modifications at Danforth GO Station to improve access • Retaining walls • Three (3) culvert extensions: east of Coxwell Avenue, east of Kennedy Road and Scarborough Junction The Process The TPAP is a proponent-driven, self-assessment process that provides a defined framework to follow in order to complete the accelerated assessment of the potential environmental effects and decision-making within a 120-day regulated assessment timeline. Following this period, the regulation provides an additional 30-day public and agency review, and a further 35-day Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change (MOECC) review. Prior to the commencement of the TPAP, introductory pre-planning activities take place. These activities include the study of existing environmental conditions and potential environmental effects of the Project across the natural environment, socio-economic environment, cultural environment, and traffic and transportation, as well as public and stakeholder consultation. As part of the TPAP, an Environmental Project Report (EPR) is being prepared.

"There are so many possibilities," Black said. "We’re piloting a program in the Yukon called Stop Now and Plan that helps with emotional self-regulation and we have a telepsychiatry program in Nunavut in partnership with the Hospital for Sick Children."

The initiative will provide a new way to engage students and give them more in-depth knowledge about their heritage while also contributing their own thoughts, ideas and experiences.

That dovetails strongly with the First Nations School of Toronto’s mandate to highlight and teach First Nations culture, helping students connect with their roots. John Chasty, TDSB superintendent for the area, spoke glowingly about the doors that would be opened through Connected North.

"It provides students an incredible opportunity to talk about the different communities that they’re involved in and to share their stories from their communities, and to enjoy that interaction," he said.

Ever wanted to own a puppy, minus the years-long commitment?

In honour of its 100th year, the Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB) is launching a guide dog program, with the goal of raising and training guide dogs exclusively for people with sight loss.

To help with this, the Bayview and Eglinton avenues site is seeking animal lovers in Toronto, Winnipeg and Halifax who would like to be puppy raisers, taking a pup into their homes from eight weeks to about 12 to 15 months of age, when formal guide dog training begins.

The puppies will be golden retrievers and Labrador retrievers, as well as crosses of the two breeds, because of their high performance rate as guide dogs.

Puppy raisers are tasked with providing a loving home, and helping to prepare young dogs through a supervised obedience and socialization skills program overseen by the CNIB, which will cover all costs.

Once the pups hit 12 to 15 months old, they will be taken from puppy raisers to begin formal training as guide dogs, which will be overseen by the CNIB. It’s possible for puppy

raisers to repeat the job with a new dog.

Three-time Paralympian Victoria Nolan, who captured bronze at the 2016 Rio Games in four-mixed rowing, began to lose her sight at age 18 from retinitis pigmentosa.

Her eyesight deteriorated significantly after the birth of her two children, leaving the 42year-old with only three per cent vision.

She used to use a white cane, but struggled with interacting with doors and elevators.

But when she switched to a guide dog, Nolan, who spoke at the CNIB’s dog guide program launch on Wednesday, April 26, said she gained much-needed confidence.

Some 25 to 30 puppies, which come from a specialized breeder in Australia, are expected to be part of the program this year across the three cities.

The first puppies are expected to graduate from their training and be matched with users in late 2018. The program launch coincided with International Guide Dog Day. According to the CNIB, there are some 500,000 blind and partially-sighted people in Canada, and 800 active guide dog users, outside of Quebec.

The First Nations School of Toronto’s focus on Aboriginal culture has gotten a lot more interactive thanks to a new initiative that came about thanks to a partnership between the Toronto District School Board, TakingITGlobal and Cisco Canada.

The school launched Connected North, a new real-time online connection between the school and remote First Nations communities on Friday, May 12, with technology donated by Cisco.

The partnership will allow for collaborative learning and will link the First Nations School’s students directly with their roots. Cisco has rolled out similar initiatives at other schools, but with the First Nations School now in full swing, Connected North made for an ideal fit.

Students at the school will now be able to connect directly in real time with elders, Indigenous artists and other First Nations schools across Canada and perhaps even beyond.

The school rang in the new initiative by linking up with a class from Fort Frances High School in northern Ontario for a lesson.

The new initiative makes for a powerful teaching tool, said First Nations School of Toronto principal Jonathan Kakegamic.

"They can interact with other students in different parts of the country and visually see the other class and share the lessons," he said. "TakingITGlobal is setting up the connections with the other communities, and our students will really benefit."

Kakegamic said each site with which the First Nations School connects will be able to share their own experiences and stories, enriching the Toronto students’ understanding of First Nations culture.

Connected North allows sessions to be set up on demand, providing flexibility for students.

Cisco vice president of corporate affairs for Canada Willa Black noted Connected North is currently set up in 11 schools across Ontario, including North Bendale Junior Public School in Scarborough, along with others elsewhere across Canada.

"They can connect with each other for lesson plans and learning and share spiritual and cultural learning," she said. "We’re operating in places like Nunavut that are incredibly remote."

Millennials more likely to change careers Demographic raised in era of high turnover, no job security DOMINIK KUREK dkurek@insidetoronto.com Chris Graham had a good job, no doubt about it.

The Scarboroughraised lawyer was working at a prestigious firm in New York City. He was hired in 2007 after graduating from the University of Toronto. He was doing banking law and when the market crashed in 2008, his work became terribly exciting.

But it just didn’t excite him.

"What became very clear to me, I just didn’t have the level of interest necessary to keep practicing," the 34-year-old said.

So, Graham applied to the University of Oxford, was accepted, and left for England in the summer of

2009. He studied history wanting to be a storyteller.

But when he returned to Toronto after graduating, he started freelancing as a journalist and lawyer. The law work led to a full-time position at a small aboriginal rights firm in Vancouver, where he spent three years. Still, he wasn’t satisfied, so he left that too.

Graham’s story isn’t unique. People born in 1980 or later are more likely to change employers and to change careers than previous generations did when they were in their 20s and 30s, says Sean Lyons, University of Guelph professor in the college of business and economics, who researches the topic.

For Graham, his career change was driven by a desire to start his own business. He started Tellpeople, a company through which he teaches professionals to become empathy-based speakers.

Lyons said career changes among young professionals are not surprising, nor are they new. But, they are happening more frequently than in the past.

In today’s age, people study in narrow fields with

niche specializations to become employed for a particular job. Firstly, these "magic" jobs are hard to come by; secondly, it’s common for a person to not like their job once they get it.

"This is a pretty typical part of learning who you

are and what you want to do," Lyons said. "I think the difficulty now is that people feel uncomfortable with that because they’ve studied to do something specific and they feel like they’re abandoning their identity or they have to change who they are."

People today are also more likely to change jobs because it’s easier to find work, and because today’s labour market is so insecure.

Millennials are raised in an era of high turnover so they expect to move, he added.

"Moving around is really healthy and it’s a good adjustment and people shouldn’t feel guilty about it."

Graham said changing careers may not be for everyone, but if you go through with it, you will be fine.

"If you’re smart enough to get a job that pays very well, you’re smart enough to do a host of other things," he said.

"Would I rather not see a shelter there? Absolutely," Holland said. "The reality is we can’t block it or turn it down."

Second Base, Scarborough’s only youth shelter for 23 years, closed in 2015 at 702 Kennedy Rd., a controversial move made by the shelter’s volunteer board after financial problems.

Without Second Base, young people have nowhere local to go when homeless, and YouthLink estimates 300 to 500 from Scarborough "have no place to call home."

That doesn’t include couch-surfing youth, said Hayes, adding there’s a recognized "acute lack of services for youth" in Scarborough.

Youthlink is Scarborough-based and is trying to centralize services there.

Its residential treatment centre in the Annex area is

moving close to Scarborough Village by the end of this summer. YouthLink is also set to move offices, counseling and other programs from Warden to 636 Kennedy.

Its new shelter, which would open between December and March 2018, will work on young peoples’ resilience and strengths, getting them back to their families, or to school, or work.

"You don’t know why kids are on the street until you talk to them," said Hayes, adding YouthLink will work on their interests - computers, sewing, or learning to be an electrician, say - to move them forward in life.

If Toronto Council approves the shelter in July, renovations would start in October.

The one-storey building is built around a courtyard and looks more expansive inside than from the street.

"It’s very welcoming once you get in that front door," Hayes said.

The former Second Base has lately served as a 60-bed shelter for women operated by the Homes First Society, expanded over the winter with 30 beds in the basement. Holland said this was strictly a temporary measure.

A permanent operator, possibly Homes First, is expected to run the women’s shelter by early 2018.

Holland said she received complaints about gang activity at Second Base, but believes YouthLink’s model for a shelter is "completely different," offering "a complete holistic approach to skills development."

The councillor also believes YouthLink’s shelter will serve an older clientele than Second Base’s.

Hayes said the new shelter welcomes clothing and food donations, as well as tutors and other volunteers.

"I hope our phone just rings off the hook with people who want to come in and help."

The annual event began two years ago after shootings put the community on edge.

"Gun violence affects us all, in all shapes or forms," said Louis March, founder of Zero Gun Violence Movement (ZGVM).

"Zero Gun Violence Movement is how we get to zero gun violence in a city where we already have zero gun violence. We only have it in certain parts of the city for certain people."

ZGVM is an awareness and advocacy movement that engages people to be a part of the solution in reducing gun violence.
