Somewhere between McCowan Station and the park south of Sheppard Avenue, the loneliness of David Soknacki’s position in Scarborough became apparent.

A mayoral candidate and former Scarborough councillor, Soknacki led a walk Saturday to illustrate how light rail, extended north and east from Kennedy Station, will do a better job of serving residents than a subway extension.

But on his two-hour hike Soknacki’s pitch for light rail - that it comes with no tax increase, is ready to be built and has seven stops instead of the proposed subway’s three - lacked local champions to back him up.

Yes, Soknacki’s rival Olivia Chow also favours the LRT option, as do many transit advocates and councillors downtown, but last summer Toronto council voted for a subway, and in Scarborough, there are few people - apart from Scarborough East Councillor Paul Ainslie, Soknacki’s supporter and friend - speaking out forcefully for a switch back to light rail.

Local Liberal and Progressive Conservative candidates jumped at the chance last year to

As the group of about 20 people passed, churches, factories and smaller businesses on Progress Avenue, Rashi Maharaj, an electrical engineer who helped organize the walk, stopped to say Torontonians can compare proposals and see which areas are served or not served.

Unlike the aging Scarborough Rapid Transit line it would replace, there’s no reason to believe the LRT would be less reliable than above-ground portions of Toronto’s subway, he said.

The subway proposal, costing at least $1 billion more, would cut out transit stops near the Dorset Park neighbourhood and at the Progress campus of Centennial College, containing 9,000 students and 1,000 staff.

Mark Toljagic, Centennial’s communications officer, appeared at the walk to say a stop on the campus would be wellused, and the consensus within the college is the LRT would be built faster and a stop would be good marketing, should it take Centennial’s name.

McCowan Road and Sheppard, where the subway would finish, is two kilometres away, too far for Centennial students, he said.

back a subway during a Scarborough-Guildwood byelection, and their parties are just as strongly behind it now.

The New Democrats, after waffling between the options last year, have joined them in supporting the subway.

“We feel Scarborough councillors have spoken clearly on this issue,” said Neethan Shan, NDP candidate in Scarborough-Rouge River and also the provincial party’s president.

Though an LRT line would reach more people in Scarborough, most prefer a subway so they can connect to downtown without having to transfer at Kennedy, Shan said on Monday. “That’s what I’m

hearing from (residents at) the doors.”

Soknacki continued during the walk to argue the LRT is still a better choice, though politics “got in the way” and, he conceded, many of his friends in Scarborough “believe a subway is the best and only way to get around.”

Speaking on the walk was Al Witzig, a transportation planner who did the environmental assessment for the planned Finch West LRT, and said the Scarborough LRT will be completely separated from traffic and give people “a ride closer to where they live” than a subway could.

In action, he added, LRT service is regular, even ordinary. It doesn’t arrive late,

the college considers any transit investment good for Centennial. The college faced with a policy reversal removing its promised rapid-transit line - “didn’t take out ads,” he acknowledged, and no one brought the matter up when Liberal Leader Kathleen Wynne visited the campus last week.

Later, Soknacki said he went to Centennial expecting to hear outrage.

“Leaders of the Centennial Student Association said they supported LRT, but they will graduate in four years and not see it,” he recalled with a shrug.

“I don’t know if they’ve become resigned over accepting second-best transit, but they don’t need to be,” said the candidate, who ended his journey in a green space on Progress Avenue just south of the Chinese Cultural Centre of Greater Toronto, promising not to let his position on the LRT drop.

On Tuesday, Bryan Heal, a member of Dorset Park Neighbourhood Association, said the group, which has no executive, is unlikely to endorse one option over the other.

The polarizing nature of the LRT-subway argument has turned many people off, Heal said.

“There’s not a lot of faith that something will get built and that a plan will get stuck to.”

Surveys of residents have found jobs, community safety and access to services were more pressing issues in the neighbourhood, where most transit users are bus riders.

“There’s not enough conversation about how to make bus service better and more reliable,” said Heal.

In a statement Tuesday, management of the cultural centre said they would not oppose either rapid-transit option, as both would take people to their doorstep.

“If funding is not an issue, (the) subway is a better solution as its operation is not weather dependent,” the statement said.

Brenda Thompson, a representative for Scarborough Transit Action, was on the walk as an observer. The group is asking municipal candidates running this year how they will address the “transit shortfall” the subway decision creates in Dorset Park and Centennial.

That there are no stations on the proposed subway extension before Lawrence Avenue East and McCowan means people using three Eglinton Avenue East bus routes will lack access to the subway and rapid transit, the group’s survey says.

his Friday, June 6, marks the 70th anniversary of D-Day, when thousands of Canadian soldiers and Allied forces led a successful invasion of France off the beaches of Normandy during the Second World War. It’s an event that’s earned a honourable place in our history books and put us forever in the debt of the brave soldiers who risked their lives for such a critical mission, that would ultimately turn the tide and end the war.

Canada’s role was a major one but it did not go without sacrifice, as Canadians suffered more than 1,000 casualties, including 359 killed.

As we honour and remember those who served sadly, a lifetime ago for most of our view those soldiers – let’s extend our commemoration on this special day to also consider other impacts of military service.

June 6th For instance, take time to is 70th think of the families who did, continue to, watch their anniversary and loved ones head off to war.

At Toronto City Hall tomorof D-Day row, a special event is taking place in Nathan Phillips Square to mark the anniversary of D-Day and one of the speakers is Joanne O’Halloran, whose father Edward served during the Second World War and was at the Normandy invasion.

She’ll be sharing her experience as a soldier’s child.

It’s a perspective we don’t hear often, but one that needs to be heard, as well as that of partners, mothers and fathers.

Show our support

Soldiers and veterans need our support, but their families do too.

Something else that should be incorporated into the tradition of military commemoration, is increasing support for the mental health needs of soldiers when they return home.

Post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) may be a relatively new term, but it’s not a new illness and its designation comes too late for generations of soldiers and families who suffered without help.

We have a responsibility to look after the people who fight for us, so let’s support them wholly during Friday’s service and after as well.

A little family food for thought to ponder

I

headed to A&W to have a quick bite after work the other day and as I sat there enjoying an uncle burger I couldn’t stop thinking about my niece.

She’d just come home to attend a conference and her folks (my brother and sister-in-law) had invited me to drop by on the weekend. I don’t get to see her that often anymore, so it’s always great when she rolls into town.

With her so much on my mind though, suddenly the uncle burger started to look a little lonely. I figured I should get a niece burger, too, to make it feel better.

So I went back up to the counter.

Well, you could see the disappointment on my uncle burger’s face when I returned empty-handed.

Alas, there is no niece burger on the menu. As it turns out, it was on omen of inexplicably absent relative burgers to come.

Take the nephew burger, for example. While I was

jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY going to be visiting with my niece, the plan was to Skype my nephew, her brother, who won’t be back in Toronto until July. I was really looking forward to that call, until I scanned the menu again and discovered another glaring omission.

How was I going to explain to him that there was no nephew burger, either?

What was just as perplexing is that there was no aunt burger either. I thought the protocol in all matters was ladies first.

Besides, a niece burger and a nephew burger need an aunt burger as much as an uncle burger, don’t they?

Now, in fairness to A&W, plenty of family members are celebrated. There’s a poppa burger, mama burger and baby burger.

There is also a grandpa burger, teen burger and buddy burger, too. There

used to be a grandma burger once upon a time.

Ditto for baby burger twins.

But alas, a good chunk of the family tree can’t be found. There’s no brother burger or sister burger, nor is there a brother-in-law burger or sister-in-law burger.

I didn’t dare tell any of this to my sister-in-law. Not only is there’s no sister-inlaw burger, sister burger or aunt burger, heck, there’s not even a significant other burger. She can’t catch a break. She gets the mama burger. Period. End of meal.

It just doesn’t seem fair.

You also can’t get a godfather burger, godmother burger or godchild burger.

I suppose because there is an uncle burger there could be a goduncle burger one day, but given there’s no aunt burger or auntie burger I wouldn’t count on seeing a godaunt burger or godauntie burger anytime soon if I were you.

There’s also no boyfriend burger or girlfriend burger

to speak of and sadly no fiancé burger or fiancée burger either, I’m afraid. So when your niece marries her fiancé or your nephew marries his fiancée, if you drop by to pick up either a nephew-in-law burger or a niece-in-law burger you’re going to be out of luck.

Surprisingly, all this worry over missing relative burgers had me working up an appetite again.

So I went up to the counter to order one last burger for the road.

“Another uncle burger, mister?” the cashier asked.

“Actually, I kinda had my heart set on a second cousin, once removed burger, please. Twice removed, if it’s not too much trouble.”

“One uncle burger it is, coming right up.”

Ford’s rehab helping voters

I

t was not so very long ago that Mayor Rob Ford longed to be anywhere but in the bosom of his constituents — at least when it came to the observation of Canada Day July 1.

In 2011, 2012 and 2013, our mayor would make a bee-line for his family’s cottage rather than wave a flag in Toronto and coincidentally march in the Pride Parade. Not so in 2014.

In an interview from the facility where he is undergoing therapy for alcohol addiction, Mayor Ford declared this week he’ll be back in Toronto for July 1.

At that point, he’ll attend Canada Day celebrations and take his re-election campaign out of the holding pattern it’s been in since April 30.

He told The Toronto Sun he’s a changed man, and is ready to make some amends for all the wrong he’s done us.

And of course he wants to run for another term as

david nickle the city mayor of the biggest city in Canada.

When that happens, I suppose we’ll all have to contend with him.

In the meantime, Toronto has another month, nearly, to appreciate our own bout of rehab.

Think about it: for just over a month, we’ve been able to spend most of our time doing what people ought to during an election: considering what sort of city we’d like to be in, and worrying over the management of the one we’ve got.

Even when the talk’s gotten rough among mayoral candidates, it’s been measured and thoughtful and respectful.

That’s been the case in matters of governance, too.

We’re having a provincial election without, so far, a single parade led by Rob and Doug Ford.

It is almost peaceful in Toronto.

And it may well stay that way.

When Rob Ford returns to his titular post as mayor, there will be just two more council meetings before the municipal election campaign starts in earnest.

The serious campaigns — which is to say, the ones that didn’t take a break to dry out in cottage country — will be organized, and funded, and by summer’s end consolidating their presence and support, their platforms mostly unveiled.

The electorate, having been schooled in such for the past few months, will be ready for a serious civic talk.

All of which is to say, going into the election, we should be in good shape: rehab, if not for our mayor then at least for our damaged city politick, having worked its wonders.

Relief Canada to set up pop-up locations wIslamic

Islamic Relief Canada (IR Canada) is encouraging communities to provide services to their com-

munity members in need through their Day of Dignity program.

IR Canada will be setting up pop-up locations throughout Scarborough that will run from noon to 7 p.m. on June 6 and 13 at the No Frills parking lot at 1150 Victoria Park Ave. They will return to Scarborough on July 26 at Confederation Park’s parking lot at 1967 Ellesmere Rd. IR Canada has purchased children’s clothing to donate to children and families in need.

There will be health awareness booths where health care professionals will provide basic health services.

Youth workers will be available to speak to youth facing challenges. Social workers will be there to offer their services for families that would like to learn of solutions to any problems that they may be facing.

There will also be a barbecue set up in order to serve grilled beef and chicken.

Day of Dignity is a domestic

initiative looking to get local leaders and citizens to grow long-lasting programs and provide resources on how to build these programs for their community.

After the changeover planned on Tuesday, June 10, people at the TSH General or Birchmount will have to pay at a station inside the hospital building before they leave, or else use a credit card at the parking lot gate.

The machines will also dispense daily, weekly and two-week parking passes, while monthly

passes will continue to be sold through the parking office, the hospital said in a release.

Parking at the Rouge Valley Health System Centenary campus is already run on a similar automated system.

Transit advocate calls for secure funding Steve Munro not impressed by politicians’ promises to improve city’s transit

RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com When voters go to the polls next week to decide the Ontario election they’ll choose between separate transit visions from the three major parties, each of which has long-term implications for gridlocked Toronto.

Each of the Liberals, Progressive Conservatives (PC) and NDP have made improving transit a central plank of their election platforms. Shortly before the provincial election was called, Premier Kathleen Wynne along with Transportation Minister Glen Murray unveiled numerous ambitious transit plans including a plan to electrify GO Transit rail lines within 10 years.

On the campaign trail, PC leader Tim Hudak announced his party’s plan to focus on subway construction.

The Ontario NDP pledged better funding of transit, including monies for replacing aging bus fleets across the province, to be paid for through a corporate income tax hike.

With election day looming, Metroland Media Toronto asked Murray, representing the Liberals, Etobicoke-Lakeshore MPP Doug Holyday for the PCs and the NDP’s Rosario Marchese, to explain in detail their parties’ longterm plans to build, fund and maintain Toronto transit.

Murray, MPP for Toronto Centre as well as transport minister under Wynne, bristled at the suggestion the Liberals have not done enough for transit. He cited the $17 billion already committed by his party for the Big Move transit expansion plan for the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) which Metrolinx is tasked to deliver within 25 years, as well as a preelection promise of $15 billion over 10 years towards the plan to come from an

increased share of gas tax revenues.

Murray also mentioned projects under construction such as the Eglinton Crosstown LRT line and the Spadina subway extension as evidence of his party’s track record in delivering transit improvements for the city.

“This is the largest-ever transit investment made in my lifetime,” said Murray.

“You would have to go back to the 1950s and 1960s when the first subways were built to see that. I would say the Liberal Party has invested more in transit than the other parties have over the last 50 years.”

Murray also defended his party’s role in deferring light rail projects for Finch Avenue West and Sheppard Avenue East as well as supporting city council’s reversal on the Scarborough LRT to build a subway extension on the RT corridor instead, saying the province had to respect the right of city council to change its mind.

“We can’t go to the city and say, ‘You do it our way or we’re not doing it all,’” said Murray. “That’s not how you work with municipalities.”

While the Liberals say they are committed to expanding transit, longtime transit watcher Steve Munro says neither they or any of the other parties are credibly considering how to better support and maintain the current transit infrastructure, which includes a near $3 billion long-term capital shortfall for keeping the TTC in a state of good repair.

“Nobody is talking about making what we’ve got now better, about dealing with the shortfall in operating budgets and the part of the capital budget that doesn’t pay for flashy expansion but just keeps the lights on and the wheels turning day-to-day,” said Munro.

Currently the province contributes $150 million per year in gas tax revenues to the TTC, which gets split between its $1.6 billion operating budget and $900 million for capital spending.

“You’re looking at $2.5 billion a year for two budgets,” said Munro. “So $150 million doesn’t go very far.”

Holyday, a longtime city councillor who also served as deputy mayor under Rob Ford and is currently the

only PC MPP with a seat in Toronto, said improving the province’s financial situation, which includes a projected $12.5 billion budget deficit for this year, would in turn have a beneficial impact on transit.

“You can’t keep digging this hole and expect to have money for things like transit,” said Holyday who left city council last year to successfully run for the Tories in a byelection.

Holyday said it was possible to start building subways now while at the same time reducing the province’s $289 billion debt.

He also brought up Hudak’s plan to foster job creation by eliminating 100,000 government jobs and instituting public sector wage freezes, which he said could mean up to $4 billion more annually in potential dollars for transit.

Munro, however, questioned the credibility of Hudak’s transit plans which involves building subways while at the same time cancelling fully-funded light rail projects. “With Tim Hudak you almost get the feeling he takes a line of spaghetti, stands over a map of Toronto, drops it

and says, ‘Here’s a subway line’,” said Munro.

Munro was also dubious about the Tories’ plan to turn over management of the Toronto subway system to Metrolinx, saying a Progressive Conservative government would likely never agree to taking on more costs.

He estimated the province would be on the hook for $400 million in annual maintenance including repairs to subway tunnels as well as station infrastructure if the Tories upload subway operations to Metrolinx’s care. “There’s this myth out there the subways are profitable,” said Munro. “If you transfer subways to the province, you’ve now created a new spending requirement that in effect takes $400 million out of the city’s budget needs. Does Hudak understand uploading the subways will cost the province money?”

Holyday said uploading the subways from the TTC to Metrolinx, as well as making it responsible for overseeing provincial roadways, would eliminate needless “red tape”.

He said. “Everyone wants to go their own way and has their own thoughts on matters. As long as everyone is trying to pull in different directions we’re not going to get much done.”

Marchese, who has acted as the NDP’s urban transit critic under leader Andrea Horwath, said his party, unlike the Liberals or Progressive Conservatives, would focus on more than just transit construction, pointing to a plan to reinstate the Ontario Bus Replacement Program and increase funding of the initiative to $60 million per year. “We can wait for the big projects to be built, whether it takes 10 years or 20, or we can help communities now,” said Marchese, who represents TrinitySpadina.

He also pointed to his party’s efforts pushing for

electrification of the Union Pearson Express air rail link.

While the NDP have adopted a Liberal funding plan promising $29 billion over 10 years, including $15 billion for the GTHA, Marchese said unlike the government, his party would also require corporations to contribute their fair share. The NDP has promised to increase the corporate tax rate by one per cent which Marchese said would eventually generate around $800 million dollars to dedicate to transit funding.

“For a long time we’ve been shifting away from progressive taxation, like corporate taxes, to user fees which both Liberal and PC governments have engaged in,” said Marchese.

“We are restoring some balance, and corporations are finally becoming partners in this venture since they will also benefit greatly from better transit.”

The party has also pledged to subsidise 50 per cent of the TTC’s operating budget, which was done away with in the midnineties.

Munro was unsure where the NDP would get enough money to pay for the $50 billion Big Move, which Metrolinx says needs $2 billion in annual funding to complete on time. He said revenue from a corporate tax increase would not be enough to contribute to transit as well as pay for other promises made by the NDP. “It’s not like the money’s sitting there waiting to contribute to the capital spend,” he said. “At some point they’re going to have to say where they’re going to get this money from.

They’ve already looked at their favourite places to find money. Now what are they going to do for the really serious spending?”

Former Birchmount Park CI students making waves in Southern California A couple of former Birchmount Park Collegiate students, both now 22 years old, are making waves in Southern California – one in hockey and one in track and field.

Tyler Toffoli is the lone player with a chance to bring back the Stanley Cup to Toronto for the traditional hometown visit in the off season.

And the Scarborough native, who got his start in the Scarborough Hockey Association, played a key role in making it happen as he contributed a goal and an assist in the Los Angeles Kings’ thrilling 5-4 overtime win over the defending champion Chicago Blackhawks in Sunday’s seventh and deciding game.

The best-of-seven Stanley Cup series kicked off last night (Wednesday) with L.A. hosting the New York Rangers.

In his second consecutive NHL post season, the former student of Birchmount Park Collegiate has been a steady performer with 13 points (7 goals, 6 assists) in 21 games.

Meanwhile, east-end Toronto Olympic sprinter Aaron Brown has qualified for his final U.S. national collegiate championship by breaking a long-standing Canadian record.

The veteran of the 2012 London Olympics, in his fourth and final year at the University of Southern California, set a new Canadian record of 20.16 seconds in the men’s 200metres at the NCAA West Regional Championships in Fayetteville, Arkansas on Saturday, May 31.

The fifth fastest time recorded in the world at that distance so far this year, it also edged the former Canadian record of 20.17 set by Atlee Mahorn in 1991.

More importantly, it also easily qualified him for the 2014 NCAA Track & Field Championships June 11 to 14 in Eugene, Oregon.

The previous day, he also easily qualified in the 100metre event with a seasonbest time of 10.12, which was second-best overall and the top wind-legal time.

Soon after, the senior college student tweeted: “Appreciate all the love! Came out healthy and it’s all coming together at the right time.

On to Eugene (for) my final collegiate meet.”

He finished fifth in both events last year.

Brown grew up in the area of Coxwell Avenue and Gerrard Street, attending Bowmore Public School and later Birchmount Park Collegiate where he attended the gifted-athlete program.

Scarborough Players stage production of Neil Simon’s Rumours maria tzavaras scm@insidetoronto.com Sometimes, the antics and scandals of the wealthy are more interesting and entertaining than anything you see in the movies.

In the Scarborough Players final show of the season, Rumours a farcical comedy

by Neil Simon, an evening that was supposed to be an elegant party becomes a hysterical night of antics,

mishaps and cover-ups, all while wearing donning evening attire.

Set in the beautiful home of Charlie Brock, the Deputy Mayor of New York City, and his wife Myra, guests are set to arrive to celebrate the couple’s 10th anniversary party.

Except, when the first guests, Ken and Chris Gorman (Greg Nowlan, Karen Brown), arrive, they not only find the house empty of the staff and Myra, but Ken finds Chris upstairs

with a shot through the ear.

Panicked, Chris calls Dr. Dudley, but Ken makes her downplay the story seeing as Chris only has a flesh wound and he doesn’t want to start an unnecessary scandal until he can find out what happened from Charlie.

Apparently, there are already a swirl of rumours surrounding Charlie and Myra, as heard by the next guests that arrive, Lenny and Claire Ganz (Chris Wakelin,

Erin Jones), who unfortunately have gotten into a minor car accident on the way over.

Lenny and Claire are convinced they’re having extramarital affairs, and their absence at the party doesn’t help the rumours. After confronting Ken, he shares what he found upstairs, and after some debating they decide not to call the police.

When the final two couples, Ernie and Cookie (David

Borwick and Elizabeth Van Wyck), and Glenn, a politician, and his wife Cassie arrive, dinner is being prepared but the couples still must decide how to handle this messy situation.

The whole thing is as bizarre as it reads, but this is what happens when the upper class comes to play because they are more worried about their reputations, the logical thing to do becomes the hardest thing to do.

Of course, more layers of the antics ensure, including another accidental gunshot, eccentric behaviour, and eventually cops (Dermot Walsh, Pearl Ho) show up at their door.

Talks about a hospital merger between The Scarborough Hospital and the Rouge Valley Health System have seemingly fallen apart due to funding concerns. What would you do to ensure riding residents that hospital services are being properly funded by the province?

■ We face a jobs crisis in our province which has had a considerable negative impact on our community. I will be the champion for jobs in our riding, for my generation, on behalf of our next generation, and for all those who have been laid off from good paying employment.

Over the past decade of Liberal rule, I have watched as the opportunities that Ontario once offered disappear. Our party has a plan to bring one million jobs back to this province. It has been done before in Ontario, and we will do it again. I have heard the stories at the doors about people stuck at home, disillusioned by a dismal job market and a government that has not been there to help support them.

■ I want to build real subways to Scarborough. The residents of Scarborough are wary of Liberal promises – especially those made in the middle of a by-election to garner votes. We are cynical of efforts made by Mitzie Hunter who has strongly supported LRT; but came out in favour of a Scarborough subway simply for her own political opportunity. The Ontario PCs have pledged to build a subway since 2012 . We have prioritized the building of an eastwest express subway which will connect people from Scarborough and Etobicoke to downtown Toronto. And most importantly, we will be building subways without raising taxes.

■ I have been running a successful real estate practice for the last 13 years. Before that, I worked in the banking industry with the Bank of Montreal. I am licensed by the Financial Services Commission of Ontario and a member of the Toronto Real Estate Board and the Real Estate Council of Ontario. I completed my GCE Advanced Level Courses in Sri Lanka, and continued my post-secondary education once I came to Canada, taking banking courses at the University of Toronto. I am also proud of my volunteer achievements in the community. I served as the President of the Canadian Tamil’s Chamber of Commerce.

■ Residents of Scarborough are not consistently getting the results that they expect and deserve from our healthcare system. I will be working at Queen’s Park on your behalf. The Liberals were in favour of a hospital merger, yet when it came time for funding, the Liberals offered only $3 million in support – the hospitals needed almost $30 million. Even though Scarborough is represented by all Liberal MPPs, only about 1/10 of the required funding was secured; a stark reminder of the lack of respect that is given to Scarborough residents by the Liberals at Queen’s Park. I will fight for what is best for our community, based on what the residents of Scarborough-Guildwood tell me.

■ A local issue that I plan to champion is something I have put a lot of work into over the last 10 months as MPP: local jobs and supporting small businesses. During this election there has been a lot of discussion about PC plans to cut services and laying off 100,000 public sector workers such as teachers and fire fighters. That simply won’t work for our community – we can’t subject the future of our local economy to Tim Hudak’s faulty job creation math. I have drawn on my own experience as a small business owner to bring local merchants together to work on issues and connect them with government.

■ I grew up, went to high school and university in Scarborough-Guildwood, so I know how much transit impacts each and every person in my community. My constituents deserve high quality transit that includes the extension of the Bloor-Danforth subway line. I worked at Queen’s Park to ensure that we have both a plan and $1.4 billion in funding to extend the subway to Scarborough. It’s important to remember that the subway will be a pivotal piece of the network that will improve transit, both on underground and on the surface, with initiatives such as the Durham-Scarborough Bus Rapid Transit.

■ My family immigrated to Canada from Jamaica in 1975. I went to Winston Churchill Collegiate Institute and University of Toronto Scarborough and completed my MBA at the Rotman School of Management. Before being elected as MPP I was the CEO of CivicAction where I focused on issues such as transit, affordable housing and the environment and their impact on city building. I was also the CAO of Toronto Community Housing and VP at Goodwill Industries of Toronto. Because I have worked in the small business, corporate, and non-profit sectors.

■ I would like to recognize the dedicated and focused hard work that The Scarborough Hospital and the Rouge Valley Health System corporations have undertaken to look at ways to improve care in their community. We have been strong supporters of The Scarborough Hospital and we remain committed to working with the LHIN and the hospital to continue to improve patient care – that’s why we have increased funding since 2003 by nearly $53 million. We provided over $28 million in capital funding to the hospital .

■ My top priority will be making life affordable for families. From creating good local jobs and increasing the minimum wage; to improving transit, to reducing auto insurance rates, Scarborough families need solutions that make sense – not more broken Liberal promises or Tim Hudak’s reckless changes. Hard working Scarborough families deserve a leader that understands and will stand up for our community at Queen’s Park.

■ As part of an NDP government I will prioritize transit improvements in Scarborough.

In partnership with the City of Toronto, we will begin funding for the Scarborough subway and work together to deliver the transit relief that Scarborough families deserve. We will create a dedicated fund of $29 billion over 10 years to support transit projects and we will provide an additional $250 million annually to kick-start priority transit projects.

■ I am a community leader and businessman committed to improving health care and creating and protecting jobs. As a successful real estate investor, realtor and local businessman, I know how small business works and what it takes to stimulate the economy and create good local jobs. I am a dedicated and active member of the Scarborough community and have led charity fundraising campaigns, including for the Cancer Society and SickKids Hospital, for which I raised over $30,000. I have also organized street cleanings and street barbecues.

■ Ensuring that families in Scarborough and across the province have access to high-quality health care will be a top priority for me and an NDP government. Too many families today can’t find a family doctor or spend hours waiting in the emergency room. Andrea Horwath and the NDP will invest in 50 new 24-hour family health clinics, hire more nurses and implement a fiveday home care guarantee so that you and your family will get the care you need when you need it. As well, we will hire more nurse practitioners in ERs, and support families caring for someone with a Caregiver Tax Credit.

Given the concerns over the future of hospital services in Scarborough and the fact that The Scarborough Hospital’s General campus has some of the oldest operating rooms in the entire province, what will you do as MPP to improve the quality of healthcare and hospital services in the riding?

■ Asking a Scarborough resident to get on and off a bus, get on and off the Scarborough RT, get on and off the subway to get downtown simply doesn’t work and is not fair to Scarborough residents who have been waiting for a subway to the Scarborough City Centre for decades. I have fought for a subway to the Scarborough City Centre throughout my entire 21 years serving this community and I pushed hard to ensure that funding for the Scarborough subway was included in the recent Liberal budget.

■ I have been privileged to serve our community in public office for over 21 years. I served for nine years as a city councillor representing our community at city hall and 11 years now as the MPP for Scarborough Centre. I’ve been fortunate to serve in many cabinet portfolios including: labour, aboriginal affairs, energy and infrastructure, economic development and innovation, and training colleges and universities. Recently, I developed and launched the Youth Employment Fund which has already provided 14,000 young people with real job opportunities.

■ I served on the Scarborough Hospital Board for nine years prior to being elected as an MPP. As MPP, I successfully fought for provincial funding for the Emergency and Critical Care Wing at The Scarborough Hospital (at $86.2 million it’s one of the largest single investments ever made in Scarborough). Now, I am firmly focussed on ensuring we renew the out-dated operating rooms. All Scarborough hospitals are reaching an age where significant investment will is needed to ensure Scarborough residents continue to get access to good quality healthcare.

■ Good jobs are a priority for this community.

After 10 years of Liberal government, many people are working two jobs to make ends meet – with the added pressure of insufficient child care and unreliable transit. It’s time for a government that stands up for Scarborough. An NDP government will reward businesses that invest in Ontario with a job creation and manufacturing tax credit; invest $100 million in affordable child care to support working mothers; kick-start Scarborough transit relief; and increase the minimum wage. .

■ The NDP is committed to a transit system that works for Scarborough. We will work with the City of Toronto to advance either the Scarborough subway or light rail transit. We will dedicate $29 billion over 10 years to support transit projects and an additional $250 million annually to kickstart priority projects. As Transportation Minister, Kathleen Wynne cut $4 billion from transit funding and her recent budget did not include any funding allocation to specific transit projects.

■ I live in Scarborough Centre and know first-hand the challenges my community faces and the tremendous potential we have. I have taken steps to uplift and build my community by volunteering on the Scarborough West Community Legal Services’ Board of Directors; TransCare Services; and started my own community group, the Midland Park Community Association. Also a labour advocate with the Ontario Federation of Labour and the Canadian Office and Professional Employees.

■ I have seen first-hand the crumbling infrastructure at Scarborough General Hospital.

While funding flows to Markham, Toronto East General and Mississauga, there has been minimal investment in Scarborough’s hospitals. The Liberals’ wasted more than $1 billion health care dollars on e-Health and Ornge and Scarborough is struggling with a severe shortage of acute care hospital beds and long home care wait times.

As MPP I will be a strong voice to ensure that Scarborough gets its fair share.

■ In my conversations with constituents, there is a large percentage of children in this riding and school proximity, classroom size and educational quality are key concerns..

■ The Green Party of Ontario is looking to establish a dedicated transit fund. The GPO will work with our partners in government to establish fair and progressive revenue tools to raise $3 billion a year to build and operate transit in communities. Europe is a great example. .

■ I am a graduate from York University, in mathematics certificate and in negotiation and conflict resolution from Harvard, PMP. I have worked in the financial industry for 17 years and am now working in the service industry in business development and product engineering. .

■ Our objective is to make certain care is provided close to home. The channels are there to provide the very best in care both at the hospitals and through palliative care. .

■ I have been fighting for a subway to the Scarborough City Centre for 30 years. As a member of Cabinet, I ensured that the $1.48 billion in funding to cover two-thirds of the cost of the Scarborough subway was included in the recent Liberal budget. I was disappointed that the NDP and PC’s rejected that budget and the Scarborough subway. The Ontario Liberal Party is the only party that has fully funded the Scarborough subway. If elected again, I will be co-chairing (with Councillor Michael Thompson) a task force to ensure we maximize the economic and job impact of the Scarborough subway.

Past issues for NDP riding association resurface in Scarborough-Guildwood

MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com Ontario New Democrats appear to be paying a price in Scarborough-Guildwood for how the party handled the nomination of a byelection candidate in the riding last year.

Adam Giambrone, a former Toronto councillor, sought the nomination shortly before it occurred last July, and won by four votes over Amarjeet Kaur Chhabra, a labour organizer.

Eight members of the riding association executive later disputed the vote, calling on the party to provide “proof of identity” for 12 people the eight members said had voted but were not found on riding membership lists.

Ballots for the meeting were destroyed, however, and the party’s provincial council last fall decided to look no further into the association’s charge that several people had voted improperly.

Hunter, the Liberal who won the bylection, announced Chhabra had endorsed her candidacy in the June 12 provincial vote while identifying Chhabra as a “former NDP nomination candidate.”

“I haven’t canvassed yet with Mitzie, but I plan to,” Chhabra said in an interview, saying what happened last summer “definitely left a bitter taste.”

Though involved with the NDP since she arrived in Canada in 1999, Chhabra said Hunter deserved to be re-elected, and was also someone who could stop one of Progressive Conservative Leader Tim Hudak’s candidates from carrying out Hudak’s agenda.

“For myself, the (provincial New Democratic) party left me, I didn’t leave the party,” Chhabra added.

In the release, Hunter called Chhabra, who is registered to run for the Ward 44 Scarborough East council seat, a tireless community worker and “a strong advo-

cate for young women of all backgrounds.”

Shuja Syed, Hunter’s current NDP opponent in Scarborough-Guildwood, couldn’t be reached for comment, but Viresh Raghubeer, president of the riding association, said last summer’s events have lessened the strength of local volunteer support for Syed.

“It has left the riding association quite demoralized,” said Raghubeer, adding Syed, a realtor who recently moved to the riding, is a good candidate who bears no responsibility for the drop in morale.

“It’s just unfortunate this is affecting him,” said Raghubeer, adding party loyalists in the riding still believe something improper occurred at Giambrone’s nomination, and that the ONDP needs to return to its principles.

Hunter is also facing PC candidate Ken Kirupa.

Majority of Toronto’s beaches now open The majority of the city’s swimming beaches are now officially open for the season.

Nine of the city’s swimming beaches – Bluffer’s Park, Centre Island, Cherry, Gibraltar Point, Hanlan’s Point, Kew-Balmy, Sunnyside, Ward’s Island and Woodbine – opened on Sunday, June 1. All of these beaches are manned by trained lifeguards.

Beach are set to open on Saturday, June 14 once lifeguard training is complete.

Water quality at the city’s 11 swimming beaches is tested daily from June 1 to Labour Day using the most stringent standards in the world.

Toronto Public Health posts warning signs against swimming at a particular beach if E. coli levels are found in excess of the provincial standard of 100 E. coli

per 100 ml of water.

The City’s Parks, Forestry and Recreation Division operates and maintains all recreation-related beach facilities and amenities providing regular beach grooming and care of washrooms and change rooms, while the Toronto Police Marine Unit provides lifeguard services and takes daily water samples on behalf of Toronto Water and Toronto Public Health. A survey published by the Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) indicates a majority of small business owners are “concerned” about the state of the provincial economy and also that they are doubtful that small business concerns will receive attention during the provincial election campaign.

According to the survey, published Monday and based on responses from 3,274 small business owners in the province, 67 per cent of respondents said they are “very concerned” about the state of the provincial economy and another 30 per cent said they are “somewhat concerned”.

City ceremony planned for 70th anniversary of D-Day Generations have passed since Canadian soldiers landed at Juno Beach on June 6, 1944 — and this Friday, June 6, representatives of those generations will gather at Nathan Phillips Square from noon to 1 p.m., to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the D-Day invasion of France.

The massive push that saw Allied soldiers land in Normandy, at great cost of life, turned the tide in the

Second World War and eventually saw the armies of Nazi Germany driven from France, Belgium, Denmark and the Netherlands.

Canadian forces assaulted a beachfront that was codenamed Juno, amphibiously and by parachute, while the Royal Canadian Air Force bombed inland targets and the Royal Canadian Navy lent 110 ships to the support of the landing.

Every year, Torontonians have commemorated the day of the landing , during which Canada suffered more than 1,000 casualties — 359 of whom perished.

This year, D-Day veteran Alex Adair will speak at Nathan Phillips Square about his experiences in the war.

Ve t e ra n E d w a rd O’Halloran’s daughter Joanne O’Halloran will speak about her experience as a sol-

dier’s child. And Cassandra Anderton, whose grandfather Weldon Clark served, will retell the stories Clark told her about his memories of that day.

As well, during the week from June 2, archival photographs and models will be on display at City Hall, Metro Hall, the Scarborough Civic Centre the North York Civic Centre and Etobicoke Civic Centre.

The day is part of a global effort to empower citizens to make positive changes in their communities.

The UTSC event goes from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the H Wing Patio.

Activities will include Discover Nature, Discover Love, Discover Your Engergy displays. UTSC is located at 1265 Military Trail.
