Toronto’s Executive Committee has voted to go ahead with the purchase of an old motel to become the new home for 57 elderly homeless men.

The committee voted unanimously to move ahead on the plan to purchase the Comfort Inn East on Kingston Road to become the new Birchmount Men’s Shelter — despite objections from some members of the community fearful that the shelter, which is a permanent resident for men over the age of 55, would lead to problems in the neighbourhood.

“The headline of our concerns is not that we don’t want it, it is that we don’t want it because we’re supporting enough (assisted housing) already,” said area resident Tom Moloney. “The issue is the placement of a large social housing project for needy people in a small footprint when there is so much else in the neighbourhood.”

Rebirth of Guild Inn begins in Scarborough Vision includes restoring Bickford Residence, adding event centre MIKE ADLER madler@insidetoronto.com The third time was the charm, and Rosa and Spencer Clark would surely smile about it.

The Guild Inn, the artloving couple’s historic former house in East Scarborough, is finally getting its rebirth, after two false starts and a wait lasting almost 15 years.

To r o n t o’s D y n a m i c Hospitality and Entertainment Group is about to retore the building’s original 1914 form, the Bickford Residence, and expand it into a $20-million event centre.

“I find it almost a miracle it has lasted so long,” said Janet Heise, one of many volunteers devoted to the Guild and its 88 acres of waterfront lands.

On Thursday, Nov. 26, Heise, who sometimes plays the role of Rosa Clark at local events, watched as Dynamic executives, Mayor John Tory and Paul Ainslie, the local councillor, broke ground for the project.

“To be honest, we never celebrated the building, we celebrated what the Clarks did,” the Guild of All Arts which filled the park grounds with sculpture and pieces of vanished Toronto buildings.

Tory said the Bickford, after passing many hurdles, would be restored “to its previous grandeur, and better.”

He said volunteers kept the dream of the Guild’s restoration - and the cultural mission of the Clarks - alive, and that the city would soon invest in arts programming for Guild Park.

Before the city signed a sub-lease with Dynamic last year there were two other attempts to have a third-party

company restore and operate the Guild Inn, a city-owned hotel and restaurant shuttered in 2001.

Since then, the building and others on the grounds suffered damage, and many feared the Bickford, in spite of its heritage designation, wouldn’t survive.

Tory said there was talk about the city stepping in to run the Inn itself, but that’s not a business a government should be in.

With the bureaucratic hurdles cleared, the company will approach neighbourhood residents “to see what they’d like to see” at the Guild, he added.

part of the community.”

There was talk at Thursday’s ceremony about the Guild becoming the brunch spot it was decades ago, though D’Uva said the restaurant will likely be scaled back during winters, to “probably a Thursday to Sunday-type thing.”

Ainslie said it’s taken many years of work to revive the Clarks’ vision, and thanked the community for its patience and confidence, particularly the Guild Rennaisance Group, Guildwood Village Association and Friends of Guild Park and Gardens.

Toronto police are asking for the public’s help in identifying a man who may be able to provide information surrounding a possible disappearance in Scarborough in the late 1980s.

Police have released a photo of man named “Ken,” who, in the late 1980s, lived in various basement apartments in Scarborough.

he Syrian humanitarian crisis has gripped the world, and the world is finally responding.

Traumatized by the horrors of war, a life away from unimaginable violence is what these refugees seek.

They are looking for a life of peace, a life of hope, and a future for their children in a land free from bombings, unwarranted arrests and detentions, rape, torture, intimidation and, of course, death.

This is what Syrian refugees are fleeing from.

Lifeline Syria, a Toronto-based organization, will recruit, train, and assist sponsor groups to welcome and support 1,000 Syrian refugees coming to Canada as permanent immigrants to our view resettle in the Greater Toronto Area over the next two years.

It’s time to Its website states some startling facts: more than 75 per cent of put people Syrian refugees are women and before politics children; fewer than one per cent of Syria’s refugees will get a chance to be resettled overseas. And after nearly four years of civil war, more than a quarter of a million people have died, more than half of whom are believed to be civilians.

It’s our national obligation to help the needy, the afflicted, the poor and the tortured. It’s our national obligation to welcome the Syrian refugees with open arms; not only is it the humane and decent thing to do, but our welcoming nature will help facilitate the settlement process so refugees can move from being victims of war to contributing members of Canadian society.

It’s time to put people before politics.

The Government of Canada will work with Canadians, including private sponsors, non-governmental organizations, provincial, territorial and local governments to welcome 25,000 Syrian refugees to our country.

Welcoming the refugees is not only to benefit their physical health, but their mental and emotional well being. How can we not benefit as a collective people when we are doing good toward our fellow man?

Councillors face a very real budget process It’s about to get real.

That was the message from Toronto’s new top bureaucrat to Mayor John Tory and the members of his Executive Committee.

For the first time in years, city staff will be crafting a preliminary operating and capital budget that will need serious political attention.

City manager Peter Wallace told the Tuesday meeting of the powerful committee in no uncertain terms that if council wants to balance the budget and provide a property tax increase at around the rate of inflation, council’s going to have to figure it out.

“We have a very challenging decision environment,” said Wallace, who came to the city earlier this year from his job as head of the civil service at Queen’s Park.

“Pressure is around five per cent before any political decisions are made by council. That is typically the type of pressure that we see, but that is not yet consistent with a residential tax rate at

david nickle the city the rate of inflation and it’s not consistent with known capital pressures. With staff recommendations we can partially, but not fully resolve that gap.”

This is a big change from the way council has become used to receiving its budget recommendations. Since the middle days of David Miller’s administration, city staff have presented a budget that more or less balances out, which is to say, the city’s programs are more or less funded by a property tax increase that more or less hits the rate of inflation.

Sometimes, surprises happen as earlier this year, when money the city had been expecting from the province didn’t materialize. Council figured out a complicated self-borrowing scheme to maintain the property tax increase then,

but that was a one-time fix.

This time, council is on notice that the situation hasn’t fixed itself, and city departments have generally not been able to meet the target of two per cent reductions that Tory promised would happen over the course of the year.

So it’s going to be up to council, and Wallace is hopeful Toronto’s 45 elected leaders will be up to the challenge to find political solutions where mere administration is not enough.

I would be more hopeful myself, had I not watched council try to do exactly that back in the early days of amalgamation, when the city was placed under extraordinary financial constraints by the downloading of hundreds of millions of dollars of new services.

What resulted then was a combination of a war of words between the city and the province, and a desperate attempt to rearrange the city’s finances to enable a

property tax freeze that was finally unaffordable.

Among other things, the city got deep into a computer leasing deal that cost taxpayers tens of millions of dollars and required a $26-million public inquiry to sort out.

When staff brought forward their unbalanced budgets then, councillors were faced with hair-whitening options for savings or revenue that went nowhere and paralyzed the process.

The solution was, ultimately, to engage staff in providing a real budget with real solutions. It made it all a bit dull.

Tory has made a mandate of being a bit dull, and it will truly be a test of that mandate, to see how he deals with what is going to be, once again, a very interesting and very, very real budget process.

Josh Donaldson and the man bun What’s the deal with all the man buns popping up these days? You know, like a mini pony tail for men?

Young hipsters, Jared Leto, David Beckham, Austin from Big Brother, even Josh Donaldson, the recently named American League MVP, have one, and he can play third base like no other. The man bun did not seem to upset his equilibrium or otherwise distract him this season with the Toronto Blue Jays.

Maybe those of us who can grow enough hair should reconsider not only the man bun, but also some other short-lived, illconceived, or generally silly man-type phenomenons.

Here are a few that we should have another look at: Man purse: Really, I mean all men have to carry wallets, keys, cellphones, etc., just like women, but somehow it’s not cool or socially acceptable to carry a man purse or satchel. What with all the cards these days – gift cards, identification cards,

john lyon LYON AROUND bonus cards, reward cards – we need something else, as people laugh at me as I pull out the huge wallet bursting with cards and receipts – everything but cash.

The days of a man’s wallet wearing out a hole in the back of his Levis are over. If Zach Galifianakis can pull off the man purse in the Hangover movies, then so can we.

Man-ziere: This is a tough one. Popularized by a successful TV show in the ’90s about nothing, a man-ziere is just as it sounds, a brazier for men. Now brazier is not a word you hear much at all, maybe for good reason.

But the man-ziere may be an idea worth considering. I mean we could all use a little more support.

Manscaping: A delicate subject to be sure. Oldfashioned men not only don’t want to talk about this

issue, they don’t want to or won’t admit to taking part in it in anyway. But even old school dudes will participate in some form of manscaping, even though they may not think of it as such. We’re talking the basics of trimming the beard, ’stache, eyebrows, even nose and ear hair. But hard core manscaping would include shaving or waxing the back, the chest and other unmentionable areas of the male anatomy. Uncomfortable yet? You know I am.

The truth is the ladies don’t seem to go for the overgrown, Grizzly Adams look. Even the urban lumberjack crowd can do a little ’scaping.

Now that Josh Donaldson has been crowned the American League MVP, I expect to see a whole lot more man buns walking around the city.

Warning over Tandoori ovens issued JOANNA LAVOIE jlavoie@insidetoronto.com Anyone who purchased a Tandoori oven or a stock-pot burner from Kitchen Queen appliance stores on Danforth Avenue, Gerrard Street East or Markham Road is urged to immediately stop using the equipment and contact their fuel distributor, the Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA) and Toronto Police Service.

On Nov. 25, officers from 55 and 54 divisions and the police’s Transit Unit executed a search warrant at the Kitchen Queen store at 3001 Markham Rd. The search was in partnership with representatives from TSSA, the provincial body responsible for the safety inspection of fuels, pressure vessels and boilers, upholstered and stuffed articles and elevating and amusement devices, and the Canadian Standards Association.

Police said large gas model clay ovens were imported from India for resale.

A man approached the CSA to receive a safety inspection

certificate for an oven but it was found to be unsafe and non-compliant with Canadian standards, and the certificate was refused.

Police said fake safety certificates were produced, and uncertified ovens were sold across the GTA. He also reportedly provided installation services without a license.

The owner of the Kitchen Queen (also known as Kitchen Queen Superstore) stores at 3001 Markham Rd. and 1415 Gerrard St. E., has been charged with possession of property obtained by crime and passing off wares. He has a Jan. 5 court date.

Members of 55 Division’s Financial Crimes Unit along with officers from 54 Division and the Transit Unit also recently executed a search warrant at the Kitchen Queen store on Danforth, seizing three industrial size and 15 smaller ovens that are not authorized to be sold in North America.

Authorities learned 300 residential, small and large industrial gas model cooking ovens allegedly affixed with

counterfeit CSA-approved certificates have been sold to restaurateurs, catering business owners and residents across Canada in the past year.

The ovens were purchased partially assembled from India, finished in Canada, and allegedly unsafely installed, police said.

“Basically you have a constant flow of natural gas into these appliances without any safety features, so if a fire starts it could become an uncontrollable fire or a possible explosion,” said lead investigator Det. Rob Whalen of 55 Division’s Criminal Investigation Bureau.

“We’re hoping word of mouth through the restaurant industry will get tips in regards to where we can go to recover these ovens. Our main thing is getting these ovens out of businesses,” said Whalen at a press conference Friday.

Police have posted safety tips online at www.torontopolice.on.ca and set up a dedicated email at frauds@ torontopolice.on.ca and telephone number 416-808-7298 to report any information.

Rescued cats from Quebec arrive in Scarborough looking for homes A cat recovery centre in Scarborough has welcomed 42 cats rescued from a hoarding situation in Quebec.

On Monday, afternoon, after weeks of rehabilitation, the felines rescued from the Abitibi-Temiscamingue region of Quebec by Humane Society International Canada and the Quebec Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, are arriving in hopes of finding forever homes in time for the holidays.

In the meantime the cats will be placed with foster families.

The 42 cats are taking a cross-province trip because there are so many cats in Quebec, said Christopher Pa re s po k e s pe r s o n fo r Humane Society International Canada.

This cats will make a stop at Toronto Cat Rescue, which is located in Scarborough and wait there for their forever homes.

A GO Transit fare hike for 2016 is on the agenda of Metrolinx’s board of directors, which meets today.

The regional transit provider is recommending a five per cent hike, which would mean an increase of 60 cents for any fares exceeding $8.25.

Five per cent annual increases have been the norm for GO, under the justification the money is used to fund service improvements.

The Metrolinx board will also hear from Union Pearson (UP) Express staff about plans to adjust the service’s rates including making it free for kids 12 and under.

They’re calling it the “Gardiner for GO trains” and a community group in Davenport is demanding Metrolinx suspend a proposal to build a three-storey bridge through the neighbourhood.

As of Tuesday, an online petition opposing the bridge released by Options for Davenport had garnered hundreds of names.

Addressed to local MPP Cristina Martins, the group wants Metrolinx to halt plans

for a planning study for the overpass and instead focus on building a tunnel.

Metrolinx has confirmed the six-month study will begin in January.

Alliance looks to ban UberX wTaxi

Lobby group the Toronto Taxi Alliance (TTA) wants the city to follow the direction of Calgary and bar UberX from operating here.

TTA members dropped off a letter at Mayor John Tory’s office outlining the group’s demands, which include immediately banning UberX. In the letter, the alliance says the presence of thousands of UberX drivers means potentially dangerous road conditions and more congestion, and accuses operator Uber Canada of running a service in violation of Toronto’s taxi bylaw.

Lost mitten season officially begins Well, I finally came across my first lost mitten of the season. I knew it was only a matter of time. The historic event took place early Sunday morning. It was lying face down on the grass in front of a building up the street and was being studiously inspected by a curious squirrel.

The furry creature was sizing up the enticing woolly accessory as potential nest material. The squirrels around here rely on ripped paper bags to build their homes, so I gave him/her two thumbs up both for ingenuity and thinking outside the box, er, bag.

Then I moseyed on. At that hour, moseying is all I can muster. I don’t get going until I down a cup of coffee and read my newspaper.

Speaking of the latter, as I approached the vending machine around the corner where I always pick it up, what should I see on the sidewalk right beside it?

Misplaced mitten No. 2 of the season. I was on a roll.

jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY For those keeping score at home, this mitten was no relation to the first. It was red, the other green.

I picked up the abandoned mitten and placed it on top of the vending machine, figuring it’d be more visible up there should its owner pass by.

Then, with the newspaper tucked snugly under my arm, I made a beeline for my usual double double at My Favourite Fast Food Place.

I pulled open the door and, lo and behold, there on the floor staring forlornly up at me was, yeah, you guessed it, yet another lonely mitten.

I couldn’t believe it. My third of the day. In less than 15 minutes yet, for those keeping time at home.

“Anybody lose a mitten?”

I shouted, as I held it up and waved it to the crowd.

Everybody in the joint screamed excitedly, “I did!”

But as they all looked over optimistically only to see a borrrrring, plain brown mitten, all the hopeful hearts in the room sank with a resounding thud.

Everybody went back to what they were doing and I plunked myself down to drink my coffee and read the paper. As usual, the combo worked like a charm, knocking the mosey out of me.

With my mojo back, I made a pit stop to get my skates and then headed to a rink across town to kick off the outdoor ice season.

A good time was had by all out there and, even better, two mittens each were also had by all. Alas, I got home and discovered I was suddenly and inexplicably now down to just one.

Oh well, I have nobody to blame but myself. I should have been more careful.

The Ontario Public Service Employees Union is asking the public to help stop the closure of provincial employment training offices in Scarborough and North York.

The province said there will be no loss of service as employment and training consultants are moved to new offices in midtown Toronto.

The union, however, said clients of the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities’ Second Career program might lose “a human connection” with face to face meetings in their home community – something they need during a difficult time.

Members of OPSEU Local 585 protested the coming move at the constituency office of Scarborough Centre MPP Brad Duguid on Nov. 20.

By shutting the office at Consilium Place near Hwy. 401 and McCowan Road, the province is taking employment re-training “out of one of the communities that needs it most,” said Brent Beeston, vice president of Local 585.

Beeston said the 12 public servants at Consilium will move by the end of February to new offices at Yonge Street and St. Clair Avenue, as will workers at the ministry’s Bridgeland Avenue office, which has a similar number of staff near Dufferin Street and Hwy. 401.

Reached this week to comment on the demonstration, Duguid said the government is working to improve delivery of public services, but people are welcome to express their views.

“We’re not unaccustomed to it, to be frank,” he said.

City committee approves water, garbage rate hikes DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com Toronto’s Budget Committee has sent along a water budget that will see homeowners pay eight per cent more in 2016 to turn on a tap, and home-owners three per cent more to toss waste into their garbage bin.

The budget committee is also backing a motion by Trinity Spadina Councillor Mike Layton to start charging full cost recovery to pollut-

ing industries, for the cost of treating their wastewater. Currently, they receive a discount.

Layton has been bringing forward the item every year for the past four, and until now, the city’s budget committee has had none of it.

This time, budget chair Gary Crawford said Layton was persuasive enough that he felt the issue at least needed airing at Executive Committee.

“I think it will be a discussion at

Executive, but this is th e third or fourth time it comes forward and this was a time that it was appropriate to bring it through budget,” said Crawford.

Getting rid of the discount would mean about $1.6 million in additional revenue for the city’s water and wastewater budget. Some councillors on the committee opposed the plan. Etobicoke Centre Councillor John Campbell called the charge “a job killer.”

Budget Committee member James Pasternak said that the rate hike would almost certainly not survive the budget’s pass through Executive Committee. “You start penalizing businesses and start bringing in draconian water rate increases you’re going to find that they won’t set up here, they’re going to flee, they’re going to lay off staff, find other ways to cut, I think it’s bad for business and bad for our economic vitality,” said Pasternak.

The Toronto Month of Giving is an amalgamation of the annual Toronto mayor’s toy drive with CP24 CHUM’s toy drive and the Daily Bread Food Drive’s holiday food drive.

The drive will take place at all Toronto civic centres until Dec. 24, when unwrapped toys and non-perishable food items can be dropped off.

The toys will be donated to the CP24 CHUM Christmas Wish, and non-perishable food items will go to the Daily Bread Food Bank.

Gail Nyberg of the food bank said that it was especially important to distribute healthy and nutritious food through the holidays.

“It’s so important that we fill our shelves for the winter,” said Nyberg, whose organization provides food to 140 agencies for distribution across the city. “Children are going to be home from school for two weeks. That means no breakfast programs, no lunch programs, so their parents will need the extra stock.”

Outdoor skating rinks open With winter just around the corner, the City of Toronto will have all of its outdoor skating rinks open by this weekend.

And that includes Scarborough’s lone outdoor rink at the Scarborough Civic Centre.

A total of 35 outdoor skating rinks were opened on Saturday, Nov. 28, including Nathan Phillips Square, the covered rink and skating path at Greenwood Park, the 250-metre ice skating trail at Colonel Samuel Smith Park in Etobicoke, and the skating path at Dieppe Park in East York.

Weather permitting, those 35 outdoor rinks will operate until the season ends Sunday, March 20.

The city’s remaining 15 outdoor rinks will open this Saturday, Dec. 5, and will operate until Saturday, Feb. 28, 2016.

Scarborough ranks high for auto collisions in study North York and Scarborough have among the highest collision frequency rates in the country, a new study has found.

North York is ranked 79th out of 81 communities with a collision frequency of 7.02 per 100 cars (2013 to 2015).

Scarborough, meanwhile, is ranked 77th with a collision frequency rate of 6.85 per cent.

Etobicoke fared much better, ranked 48th (5.67 per cent).

The study by insurance company Allstate was released Thursday, Nov. 26.

It tracked collision frequency among Allstate customers in Alberta, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Ontario.

Spruce Grove lowest The community with the lowest collision claims frequency was Spruce Grove, Alberta (3.43 per cent)

while Halifax, Nova Scotia had the highest rate (7.12 per cent).

The study also found the dates with the fewest collision claims were Dec. 25, followed by July 1 and Jan. 1 while most collision claims were made on Dec. 23, followed by Nov. 19 and Dec. 21.

Sunday is the safest day of the week to drive while Fridays have the most collisions.

January has the most collision claims, and June has the least.

The most common type of accident? A rear-ender, accounting for 25.17 per cent of all collisions. In contrast, head-on collisions had an occurrence rate of only 0.92 per cent.

Rising trend “Our data is showing a trend toward rising collisions over the past two years,” said Ryan Michel, senior vice-president and chief risk officer

for Allstate, in a news release.

“While the study can only look at our data, we believe it’s important to share the trends we are seeing in an effort to shine a light on road safety and encourage Canadians to think about what it means to be a safe driver.”

Metrolinx hosts public meeting about GO rail corridor in Agincourt Metrolinx wants another chance to explain how adding a second track to its Stouffville GO rail corridor in Agincourt will affect nearby residents.

The provincial transit agency left some homeowners along the corridor unsatisfied last month after an open house at Monsignor Fraser College on the coming construction.

Residents commented the informal format didn’t let them voice their concerns or get answers from officials.

Metrolinx will try again from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on

Tuesday, Dec. 8, at Agincourt Community Centre on Glen Watford Drive, with a meeting in which a formal presentation is scheduled at 7 p.m.

Rotary Club sends hot meals to First Nation reserve TARA HATHERLY thatherly@insidetoronto.com Thanks to the Rotary Club of Scarborough and Kids Against Hunger Canada, more than 14,000 hot meals will be enjoyed by Sandy Lake First Nation reserve residents next year.

Using money raised at the Scarborough Ribfest, the

Rotary Club of Scarborough hosted a Kids Against Hunger meal packing session in November.

Volunteers cooked and packed fortified rice and soy casseroles that will head to Sandy Lake when ice roads open this winter to the remote reserve.

The ice roads are passable for approximately six weeks a

year, weather depending.

Only accessible by plane otherwise, the Sandy Lake community relies on ice-road shipments for essential supplies that can’t be flown in.

“It was an absolutely marvellous time,” said Rotarian Chris Musselman. “We had fun doing it, and it really felt great that we were spending our time helping other people.”

Different flavours and ingredients can be added to the casseroles when they’re prepared, making them a great all-purpose food.

“The people that get them simply add water and cook them up,” Musselman explained. “They can add protein, they can add fish, or chicken, or meat or whatever they want.”

The Rotary Club chose to send the meals to Sandy Lake specifically, wanting to help people in Ontario and hearing from club member Joan Barrett, who has been to the Northern Ontario reserve, about the need there.

Volunteers packed meals in three assembly lines, filling 66 boxes in two hours.

Hunger is a huge problem in Canada, and around the world, and it’s great to see people and organizations like Kids Against Hunger helping to address that, she added.

“Over 14,000 children die every day around the world because of malnutrition, starvation or other hunger-related diseases,” she said.

“For us to be able to help, I think that’s something that we should do as humans.

When we see that there are so many things happening around the world, sometimes what we don’t see is the fact that there are a lot of things happening here in Canada as well. Homelessness is something that takes place here, and there are a lot of people living in poverty.”

Scarborough Southwest Councillor Crawford urged his colleagues to support the plan.

“We’re relocating an existing men’s residence that meets the needs of senior men, 55 plus, and we’re doing this because the building they have been in is deteriorating to the point that the quality of life of these men is in jeopardy,” he said. “These gentlemen could be your brother, your uncle, they could be you.

A lot of these men volunteer at the local food bank. I have no concerns at all.”

Scarborough police officers are engaging the community through coffee as part of new crime prevention initiative unveiled recently.

Const. Mark McCabe of 41 Division was looking for new ways to reach out to the community and came across Coffee with a Cop, a project launched in California in 2011.

He liked the concept, so he brought it to Scarborough.

“Community meetings, presentations are all great ways of reaching out to people. However, there’s a lot of people who don’t feel com-

fortable asking questions,” he said, adding he felt there was a need to engage citizens in a more casual setting.

McCabe approached a number of local eateries, and McDonald’s was the first to embrace the idea.

Scarborough’s first Coffee with a Cop event took place at 10 a.m. Friday at the McDonald’s at 1966 Eglinton Ave. E. There were no speeches, just casual conversation over coffee.

“I wouldn’t say we solved any crime but we did get some good information,” McCabe said. “People felt comfortable just passing the information

along.”

Residents told police about break-ins, suspicious people, trespassers and traffic concerns.

“The plan is to try to do it on a regular basis, perhaps every month throughout the division,” McCabe said.

About a dozen officers took part in the event.

“It’s great to sit down with the people in the community.

They get an opportunity to talk to us about whatever they want,” he said. “Hopefully it’s going to open up some dialogue.”

Kurdistan minister speaks as guest of Scarborough councillor Bakir asks for weapons during Toronto speech

DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com Scarborough-Agincourt Councillor Ji m Ka r y g i a n n i s we l c o m e d Kurdistan Regional Government of Iraq’s Minister of Foreign Relations Falah Mustafa Bakir to Toronto City Hall last Friday, who arrived to ask Canadians to send weapons and ammunition to assist in the fight against Daesh (ISIS) at the same time as Canada seeks to admit more than 25,000 refugees from Syria.

“Welcoming Syrian refugees does not solve the problem. Stabilization of the region solves the problem,” Bakir said in his speech in Toronto.

“The Peshmergas on the front line need support. They need weapons, ammunition, and they need equipment,” he said. “Not all the Peshmergers have a helmet but they all have the will to fight.”

Bakir told the small assembly of diplomats, politicians and members of the media that difficulties with the central government in Bagdad and falling oil prices have made it difficult to adequately supply the Peshmerga troops, and that they desperately need guns, armour and other technological support.

The troops, he said, had only been paid for August this month.

“What we would like to see from Canada is weapons, ammunition

and equipment,” said Bakir, who is wrapping up a tour of several Canadian cities asking for aid for the Kurdish Democractic Party of Kurdistan Peshmerga military force, as it engages with forces of Daesh, also known as Islamic State.

“I urge the new government to continue to support the Peshmerga forces. We kindly requested the new government to continue support in different forms, in providing weapons, ammunition and equipment for Peshmergers to continue this war.

“At the same time we have asked for the government to provide humanitarian aid and we ask a Consul General be opened. We need a full fledged consul.”

Bakir also said the region requires humanitarian aid, to help settle approximately two million refugees, rebuilding infrastructure in recaptured areas and preparing for the winter.

“Less than 30 per cent of these people are in camps — many are in unfinished buildings. Some people have nowhere to go,” he said.

Bakir was in Toronto as a guest of Councillor Karygiannis, and there were few members of city council who attended the speech.

Karygiannis, a former Liberal Member of Parlaiment, said that Bakir was “a friend” that he had made over the course of several

trips to the region.

The speech was attended by members of the Worker Communist

Party of Kurdistan, who attempted to question the legitimacy of the KDP government during the media

question and answer. Bakir did not address their questions and ended the news conference.

De Rosario member of advisory panel for Ontario’s Game ON Toronto 2015 may be long over but the provincial government is stressing that as far as sports go in the province, it’s still Game ON. Game ON is the province’s new sports plan, unveiled Nov. 24, to follow up on the widely-acclaimed success of this past summer’s Pan Am / Parapan Am Games.

The wide ranging manifesto basically boils down to attracting more participants into sports at a younger age and keeping them active longer into their senior years while ensuring that the elite athletes among them have the support to compete to their highest level.

The province doesn’t intend to reinvent the wheel and will work through both existing individual provincial sport organizations (such as the Ontario Soccer Association, the Ontario Volleyball Association and Ontario Basketball) as well as through provincial umbrella sports organizations (such as

Ontario University Athletics, Ontario Colleges Athletic Association and the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations).

“Through this plan, we will collaborate with our sport partners to create a worldclass sport system and support our athletes from the playground to the podium,” said Don Valley East MPP Michael Coteau, the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport and Minister Responsible for the Pan and Parapan American Games, in the ministry media release.

The Ontario government has also created a high profile advisory board, including some prominent Toronto members, including: • recently retired soccer legend Dwayne De Rosario of Scarborough; • Be a c h n a t i v e ( a n d Malvern Collegiate alumnus) Bruce Kidd, the recently named University of Toronto Scarborough Campus principal, who is the only member

of the Canadian Olympic Hall of Fame inducted twice – for both his athletic exploits which culminated in an Olympic appearance, and as a builder; • and retired Toronto District School Board principal Karl Subban, father of three professional hockey athletes, including the Montreal Canadiens’ all-star defenceman P.K. Subban who grew up in Rexdale.

Leading off the agenda of the new sports plan are a roundtable on women and girls in sport early in 2016 to be followed in the spring by the Ontario Sport Symposium which will bring together leaders of the provincial sports community.

NORM NELSON nnelson@insidetoronto.com Scarborough’s Agincourt Collegiate boasts the best high school volleyball team in the province after pulling off a stunning comeback against Mississauga Secondary School at the top provincial triple-A championships in Windsor.

Agincourt won the gold medal match, played Saturday, Nov. 28, 3-2 (17-25, 23-25, 26-24, 25-17, 15-7).

Not only did Agincourt find themselves down 2-0 in the best-of-five final, but also faced match point in the key third game, down 24-23.

Had they lost the next point they would have lost the match in three straight games.

But Agincourt rolled off three straight points to take the game 26-24, and then kept right on rolling to convincing wins in the next two games.

Both teams were highly touted going into the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) tournament; Agincourt seeded second and Mississauga fourth.

Agincourt, though, had lost to Mississauga earlier in the season in tournament play, one of only two teams to beat

them all season.

The other team to beat them was cross-town rival Birchmount Park Collegiate in the regular season, although Agincourt avenged that one with a 3-0 playoff semifinal win in the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) east (Scarborough) division semifinal.

Slow start “I think that was sort of in our minds...I think they (Mississauga S.S.) were in our heads,” said Agincourt coach Gabe Lee, in a postgame interview, explaining the non-characteristic slow start in the championship game.

In the end, however, it allowed Agincourt – who hadn’t dropped even a game, let alone a match, at OFSAA up until that point – to show off another quality.

“This really showed that the boys are able to be resilient, able to play from behind,” he said.

Leading up to the championship game, Agincourt had won their semifinal match, quarterfinal match and four pool matches all by identical 2-0 scores.

Agincourt went into the

OFSAA tournament with “a good feeling”, according to Lee, having been seeded second and having earned a win in tournament action over the top seed, Oakridge Secondary from London, who were ultimately ousted in the quarterfinal at OFSAA. It marked Agincourt’s first OFSAA championship in boys’ volleyball, on the heels of qualifying for the first time last year when they were seeded eighth and ousted in the quarterfinals by the eventual champs.

“We were actually winning and we buckled and lost,” he said of last year’s OFSAA quarterfinal game.

“It kind of left a little bit of a chip on our shoulder and a bad taste in our mouths.

And we were definitely eager coming back this year.”

Agincourt won both the (TDSB) city-wide and east division championships.

Lee said a strong cast of Agincourt Collegiate players was led by six-foot-nine Sharone Vernon-Evans.

“I’m almost certain that he’s one of the top, if not the top, 17-year-old player in Canada,” said Lee of VernonEvans.

“He’s one of the top prospects.”

During the visit, foundation president Glenn Hadden, his wife, Susanna, and their family spent time with the students, getting their hands dirty in a science experiment, playing dodgeball and basketball, and trying the kids’ cooking.

A Scarborough native, Hadden returns every year to visit and connect with Beyond 3:30 students in his hometown.

“It’s my favourite day of the year,” he said. “We all enjoy this day so much of interacting with the kids, but also letting them know and appreciate that there’s a world of people that they may never meet who are working hard to

support them and have their backs...Part of this donation is coming from friends and colleagues of mine from around the world.”

He wanted a way to support Scarborough and Toronto youth in ways that would make long-term impacts, and Beyond 3:30 and student nutrition programs were a

perfect fit.

“Beyond 3:30 is such a great program, in terms of physical education, nutrition, homework and keeping kids off the street,” Hadden said.

“It gives students a place that is safe, that is supervised and that is away from some of the bad influences they might otherwise be exposed to after

school out on their own.”

Nutrition is crucial for student success, he added.

Kids between 11 and 14 years old are particularly i m p re s s i o n a b l e, n o t e d Catherine Parsonage, executive director of the Toronto Foundation for Student Success.

“They’re very vulnerable,” she said. “This is when they’re so easily persuaded into positive behaviour, and so easily influenced into negative behaviour. They’re a half-child, half-teenager, it’s a very big turning point for them. So this age group is the focus of a lot of our effort at the foundation.”

Currently offered at 18 schools in priority neighbourhoods, Beyond 3:30 programs have a big impact on kids, she added.

“The impact on selfesteem, and mental health and well-being is absolutely profound, because they’re developing skills, they’re feeling confident, they’re making friends that they might not make in their classes,” she

explained.

“And our teachers report that they’re doing much better, particularly with the extra homework help.”

The programs also increase school attendance. They are offered in communities where many kids might not have supervision, activities or healthy meals after school, because parents are working hard to make ends meet.

Centred around nutrition, homework help and physical activity, the programs are switched up every six to eight weeks to incorporate arts, science and other components, including financial literacy, babysitting courses and more.

Hadden visits Beyond 3:30 students to let them know the sky is the limit.

“I was born here and I grew up here, spent most of my life here. Even though I live in New York now, I appreciate some of the day-to-day struggles that a lot of the kids in the Scarborough schools, and Beyond 3:30 particularly, experience, because I experi-

enced a lot of them myself,” he said.

“And it’s important for the kids to know that they can dream big. My dream was Wall Street and it worked, and their dream may be different, it may be to be a teacher, or a member of parliament or to be an astronaut. It’s important for them to know with the right level of support from your community, and the right level of work, that your dreams are achievable.”

Hadden talked to the students about the importance of supporting each other and spreading positivity, and said the Scarborough community gave him so much that he feels obligated to give back.

“In Scarborough, we represent and we stick together, so it’s important to let them know that we take care of each other,” he said.
