Santa Barbara Dons beat San Marcos Royals in overtime thriller! Anthony Spann The crowd erupted as Sports Editor Santa Barbara High School junior Noah Burke hurdled up a miraculous half-court shot in overtime to win the game against our cross-town rivals, the San Marcos Royals. The shot rattled in with no time left to leave the Dons up, 56-55. The Dons won against the Royals at San Marcos, Friday January 25th, 2013, and continued to maintain a competitive edge for the Channel League title. There wasn’t an empty seat in the house. The crowd was already exited from the Junior Varsity nail biter. San Marcos gained a lead on the Dons in the second quarter, 27-22. Emilio Gonzalez (32) fed Jeff Paschke (10) in the post to make it 27-24 at halftime. The Royals extended their lead, 43-35 by forcing turnovers with their full court press. Later in the third quarter, Gonzalez received the ball back-to-back in the post to shorten the Royals’ lead, 43-39. Despite a devastating 3-point play by Christian Widmer, the Dons never gave up. Matthew Wagonhurst (20) sunk a threepointer, right after feeding Gonzales, who had an outrageous 25-point game. At the end of the fourth quarter, Kevin Hempy scored for the Royals, bringing the score to 49-46. San Marcos was at the line with a chance to secure the game, although they missed the first free throw on the one-and-one. With about 24 seconds left, Burke drove into the lane and was swatted by Hempy. Brendan

Dons trailed 55-53 against the Royals after Jake Wheelock hit a free throw with 17 seconds on the clock. The ball was entered to Wagonhurst at the high post from the top of the key, but somehow went between his legs. The officials
ruled that it was the Dons’ ball after it miraculously hit a San Marcos player’s leg before bouncing out of court. The ball was entered from Burke to Gonzalez at the block; however it was then swiped out of his hands by Uriel Hurtado and flung to the other end of the court by Christian Widmer. Burke then picked up the ball and took a few dribbles before launching the ball through the air
and into the hoop as the buzzer rang. The entire visitor section, decked out in green and gold, rushed onto the court and hoisted Noah up in the air, parading around and out of the building as the Royals sulked off their home bleachers in disbelief. It was Santa Barbara’s single victory over their rival San Marcos in a three game series. This win strengthens the Dons chance at securing a spot at CIF.
