city councillor is placing the blame for the long-delayed boat launch in Centennial Park firmly on the shoulders of the project consultant.

“I put that directly on Golder,” said Anne Marie Gillis of Golder Contracting, a division of Golder Associates.

“We have hired them to do this job because supposedly they were the experts. I put this squarely on them.”

Golder Associates has been overseeing the remediation of Centennial Park after portions of it were closed in 2013 because oil, asbestos and lead has been found in the soil.

THE REOPENING OF CENTENNIAL PARK has been a source of joy for many eager to see what four years and $12 million could do for waterfront lands closed in 2013 by the discovery of contaminated soil. Canatara Park together with its famed beach is one of three public locations at which electronic eyes will begin monitoring people’s behaviour by the end of this month in a

bid to reduce crime and vandalism, the city says.

The other locations are Centennial Park and the downtown Sarnia Library branch.

“We’re trying to cover the

greatest areas of concern in these spaces to start with,” said parks and recreation director Rob Harwood.

He wouldn’t say exactly where cameras will be installed

but hinted that structures, entrances and beach parking areas are likely candidates.

The Canatara cameras were funded in part by a donation from Unifor Local 672 and Local 848. They will be set up in self-sustaining units that will house multiple cameras and recording hardware.

The city is working with Sarnia Police to determine the areas they should be trained on.

At Sarnia Library, the front entrance and staff parking lot will be under watch, along with 12 possible other vantage points. Andrew Meyer, Lambton County’s corporate cultural manager said a contractor’s input will be used for the rest of the camera placements.

“The locations are based on high-risk, high-value asset protection areas — the entrances,” he said. “It’s a big facility so we don’t always have eyes on every corner of the building.”

According to the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario, public institutions are turning to video surveillance in an effort to enhance public safety, but it also warns the spread of cameras can place an individual’s privacy at risk.

“If the technology can be justified, institutions should then consider how to deploy it

and how the information will be used,” the Commissioner’s office said in an email.

And what are municipal officials going to do to ensure citizen privacy is protected?

Meyer said the library cameras will only be accessed in the event of a conflict or crime, and then only by the branch supervisor on site.

Harwood said the recorded content will be accessible to both police and parks staff.

“If you have nothing to hide,

then there’s really no need to be worried about it,” he said.

“This is for the protection of public property that we all pay taxes towards.”

Harwood acknowledged the park cameras will come with a network feature allowing them to be viewed from a computer off site.

Visitors to Canatara one day last week said they weren’t concerned about being watched while enjoying the beach.

Emily Potter, a city mother of three, said she appreciates a ‘second set of eyes,’ coming to city parks.

“The use of cameras at the playground is fine with me, one way or the other. Nothing out of the ordinary happens when families are there playing, but in the event, heaven forbid, something terrible occurred, like a child wandering off or wandering off with a stranger, surveillance might help in a situation like that,” she said.

Sarnia mom Shayna Daley was also happy to hear cameras are on the way.

“When I come to the park with my son… I feel a bit vulnerable,” she said. “It’s a park, not a place to come party.”

Repeated attempts to build coffer dams to contain the water during construction of the boat launch in Sarnia Bay failed, and the work site beside Dockside Restaurant has been idle with no activity for weeks.

“This one has just been a never-ending story. I know people are terribly frustrated; council is terribly frustrated,” Gillis said.

“I’m not impressed — not impressed at all with Golder as a project manager, because they can’t seem to manage this project.”

The absence of a municipal boat launch has angered Sarnia-Lambton’s large community of recreational boaters and anglers — and just as the summer water season kicks into high gear.

Bridgeview Marina has stepped up to help and is doing what it can to accommodate trailer demand, but boaters say the single ramp in Point Edward is simply inadequate to meet local needs.

Gillis explained that for municipal projects of this scale the city usually acts as the project manager.

But given the nuances and expertise required

for the unprecedented park remediation, it was decided it would be best to hire Golder.

“They had the expertise and we didn’t,” she said.

The city announced last August that work was starting on the new boat ramp, and the old one would remain open until the new one was complete.

However, the old launches were pulled out in January to facilitate shoreline construction work.

Gillis was quick to note Golder Associates did a terrific job on the remediation part of the

project. But with the boat ramps she believes the city — the client — has been, “totally disrespected by this Golder contract management team.”

“There are many people within our community that have had experience with this. I am not aware that Golder has reached out to anyone.”

Asked if litigation is an option, Gillis said she couldn’t comment one way or the other.

“All I can say is, we’re not finished with Golder.”

When contacted, a spokesperson at Golder Associates, Tina Marano, said all media inquiries

should be directed to the city.

Sarnia CAO Margaret Misek-Evans declined to comment.

Coun. Matt Mitro said he agreed with Gillis that Golder Contracting’s work on the boat ramps has left much to be desired.

“I know one group of people it’s not the fault of — the City of Sarnia, Sarnia city council, Mayor Bradley,” he said.

“None of us have any particular thing to do with that part of it because we said… we’ll trust the experts.”

“I understood the concept of it but I wasn’t grasping the situation,” recalls Kelsey, now 15.

Her mother, however, knew it was bad.

“I lost my mom to cancer when she was 50,” Brenda Clark said. “To hear the words that my daughter had it was just devastating.”

A few months later, on April 24, 2012, Kelsey underwent a 15-hour operation at Sick Kids hospital in Toronto involving five doctors drawn from a variety of disciplines.

The only treatment for her cancer was to remove it. Her right shin was completely rebuilt by transplanting bone from her other leg, along with fabricated metal parts and skin grafts.

Kelsey believes she has had nine surgeries so far and may need more as she

For three of those years she lived with her mom and brother and sister in Toronto while her father continued to work in Sarnia, visiting on weekends.

Transportation, food, lodgings and medication one year totaled about $29,000, Brenda Clark said.

Thankfully, the transportation was covered by the Canadian Cancer Society, which also offered ongoing support and made other arrangements to assist, the family says.

Kelsey, now a Grade 10 student at St. Patrick’s High School, has been cancer free five years. And she has given back by raising several thousand dollars for the Society through the annual Relay for Life.

Sarnia’s StreetCity office has an agents’ lounge and shared space that generate a friendly, relaxed environment, Mathewson said.

There are also four private offices and a private boardroom in the newly renovated building at 545 Murphy Rd. After 24 years in the real estate business – the last 18 at Royal LePage – Mathewson said she was happy working for others.

But opportunity knocked

and she jumped at it.

StreetCity is owned by Costa Poulopoulos and Mary Johnson who started their new, independent brand in London last July. Within a year, it has rapidly grown and there are now eight branches throughout Ontario.

Sarnia’s was the sixth to open in April.

“We are a good fit,” said Mathewson who is managing salesperson at the Sarnia branch.

“Their philosophy in how to deal with clients and agents has a familial feel to it.”

In an industry that can often be cutthroat, Mathewson said StreetCity generates a sense that everyone in the office supports one another.

“I’m looking to have a small office of like-minded agents,” she said.

StreetCity opens at a time when the Sarnia market is challenged by the lowest number of listings in at least 40 years.

“For the past 18 months, the market has generally been a seller’s market,” said Mathewson who is a threetime president of the Sarnia Lambton Real Estate Board and its current vice-president.

“High demand and low supply can drive prices up unrealistically but the market is always cyclical. It will be balanced again.

“It is just a matter of time.”

Whether it’s a seller’s market or a buyer’s market, Mathewson said she loves being in real estate, particularly to help first-time homebuyers.

“It’s very rewarding when you help someone make a decision about what is likely the biggest purchase of their lives,” she said.

Integrity commissioner is Sarnia’s new bogeyman

I

f you watched the Feb. 27 city council meeting you may be hard pressed to see exactly where Mayor Mike Bradley “bullied, harassed and intimidated” the city clerk.

Video of the meeting shows Bradley strongly disagreeing with Dianne Gould-Brown’s decision not to include a letter from a citizen in the council agenda package. But the mayor doesn’t raise his voice or appear to act offensively. He even cuts short the debate when it appears to be getting heated.

But, of course, the clerk’s complaint was not an isolated incident. So in finding the mayor had breached the city’s code of conduct again, Integrity Commissioner Robert Swayze said the latest complaint was part of a pattern of ongoing and egregious behaviour directed by the mayor at City Hall staff.

What’s more, the commissioner added, Bradley deliberately challenged the decision of the clerk — an employee who can’t defend herself — at a public session, thereby showing disrespect for her professional capacity as an officer of the city.

Council agreed, and in a 5-2 vote on May 29 docked Bradley two week’s salary.

Coun. Cindy Scholten said Bradley supporters who were outraged after watching the meeting video are missing the big picture.

“They are not witnesses to the depth of the ongoing psycholog-

GEORGE MATHEWSON ical abuse that has been happening inside these walls by our mayor,” she said.

“This is not about being too sensitive. Saying you’re too sensitive is what you would say from the ‘70s when a man beat his wife all night long.”

The irony, of course, is that even as council was using the code of conduct to sanction the mayor — and it’s really the only tool at its disposal — councillors were repeatedly and unwittingly violating it themselves.

Coun. Anne Marie Gillis, for example, while speaking with deep emotion about the recent heart attack of acting city manager Andre Morin, whose funeral picture was on display, suggested the mayor’s behaviour had contributed to his death.

“Words kill,” she said, quoting the Pope.

Before that, Coun. Matt Mitro suggested the mayor was lying when he cited health problems as the reason for his missing council meetings. “Lot’s of times I don’t believe that to be the case,” Mitro said.

The code, remember, prohibits councillors from making “any negative comment or insinuation” about another councillor or staff member, on any personal opinion expressed at any time, anywhere, on any subject.

Those are the rules.

Do I think they should be called before the Integrity Commissioner and sanctioned for making “negative comments” about another member of council?

No, of course not. They were speaking honestly and from the heart, and to my mind elected leaders should be given wide latitude to freely express their opinion when conducting city business. That’s how good decisions are made.

Unfortunately, though, this odious code of conduct sets the bar for speech so low that it’s now almost impossible for a member of council to do his or her job without breaching it.

To be clear, I am not defending the mayor’s behaviour. Five

highly capable women have now lodged complaints against him alleging harassment and bullying. Three have left the city and two continue to flank him at the head of council chambers, painting a sad portrait of municipal dysfunction.

Bradley is reportedly facing suits launched by one or more of the complainants. A judge will determine his guilt or innocence in a court of law, and voters will have the final say on Oct. 22, 2018, when they decide if they want him to be mayor going forward.

In the meantime, however, our elected representatives better be guarded about saying anything negative — indeed, even “insinuating” something

negative — or risk being hauled before the integrity commissioner, Sarnia’s new bogeyman.

The recently amended code, as written, is restrictive, it is insidious, and it is almost certainly unconstitutional.

The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms guarantees the freedom of thought, belief, opinion and expression, “subject only to such reasonable limits prescribed by law as can be demonstrably justified in a free and democratic society.”

Could Sarnia’s code of conduct survive a Charter challenge? Hardly. But until someone comes along with deep pockets and a path to the Supreme Court, we’re stuck with it.

Seniors in apartment Delay and escalating cost of building treated like Centennial Park is inexcusable ‘bad children’

Sir: I am writing on behalf of my “eighty-something” mother who resides in an apartment building in prestigious Point Edward.

Her building houses a large population of seniors, many of whom have canes and walkers to assist with living.

Every time I see my mother, she has fresh bruises on her arms, legs and hands from trying to manage the heavy doors to both the garbage room and the car park. I imagine her wrestling with her groceries, cane, purse and keys just trying to get in the building.

I have written to the owner of the building about this in the past, suggesting automatic door openers that open with the push of a button.

They have chosen not to address my concerns.

The seniors also have a problem disposing of waste larger than a kitchen bag, anything recyclable, and larger household items.

In the past, these items were placed by the residents in the “Garbage/Recycling room” for disposal.

But these folks have recently been locked out of that room. They are now being forced to once again pass through those heavy doors and go into the garage to get to a new area that is twice as inconvenient. Once they get there (if they get there) they have to prop open the huge lid of the dumpster, hold it and with one hand, and catapult their items into the bin. That’s assuming the bins aren’t so full even Hercules couldn’t reach the top.

The shutes available on each floor are too small (15” x 15”) to handle larger and recyclable items.

The owners need to come up with something better. They could start by unlocking the once accessible

room, providing an area for gently use items for donation by a goodwill agency, provide more garbage/ recycle bins in an accessible location, empty them more frequently, and keep the dumpsters propped open. Lastly, they could install door openers that these people can negotiate.

They are treating these folks like bad children and creating a safety hazard. It’s only a matter of time before someone really gets hurt.

Sir: I read with interest, “Opening date clear as mud” (June 1, 2017) and would like to say, I have had enough!

The Centennial Park project has gone from “understandable” (we all know from experience that things don’t always go according to plan) to “inexcusable.”

Why is city CAO Margaret Misek-Evans allowing Golder Associates and BreEx Construction to hold this city hostage when it comes to completing the work, while at the same time the cost continues to rise?

Why is there no penalty system in place for companies who fail to meet their

deadlines with the City of Sarnia? (Other cities have a penalty system.)

Ms. Misek-Evans defended Golder Associates and BreEx Construction by declaring them to be “very diligent.”

Well, I beg to differ. Please allow me to provide you with the dictionary definition of diligent: having or showing care and conscientiousness in one’s work or duties and constant in effort to accomplish something; attentive and persistent in doing anything, lastly, done or pursued with persevering attention; painstaking.

If anything, from the beginning, this project has

lacked diligence and all it entails.

Where is the common sense? What about financial integrity and responsibility?

Why is City Council so silent about this? Do they not realize that we are watching them and their lack of action on this matter while we seriously consider who will get our votes in the next election?

Remember this fiasco, dear citizens of Sarnia, remember!

Councillors ignore lowly taxpayers

Sir: The drama at Sarnia City Hall just keeps going and going and going.

The fact that it has become same-old, same-old is perplexing.

As a voter and taxpayer - I really resent the costs involved.

And I can’t figure out how they managed to balance the budget with the unanticipated costs of “building a wall,” or was it unexpected?

Following is my opinion as a voter and taxpayer on the issues at city hall.

I haven’t always “liked” our mayor.

However, I have grown to respect him over the past 20 years for the following reasons: Whenever I have had a concern about city management and/ or performance I have always (until recently) felt free to voice my concern to Mike Bradley.

He hasn’t always said, “Yes of course.”

But when he says, “Can’t do,” he explains his answer in words I can understand.

Recently, I have contacted the mayor and every member of council with several

concerns. I always heard back from the mayor immediately, and a few members of council ASAP. However, the more vocal newer members of council (you know who you are) have chosen not to reply. I guess I am considered a lowly voter and/or taxpayer who won’t understand how to master elec-

tronic voting, so why concern themselves about my concerns and questions.

A few weeks ago, one of the councillors spoke out demanding respect from one of their peers. I was taught that respect doesn’t come from our demands. We receive respect when we earn it. Guess this councillor wasn’t taught the same thing, or has chosen to respect or disrespect whomever they choose.

Sir: Sarnia has become a city of apprehension, a state of retrogression has befallen us, and the only thing on city’s council’s mind is a coup d’état to overthrow Mayor Mike Bradley.

The code of conduct is something they work with, but it isn’t that important in the real world.

The bureaucratic world has made a mess of it, even when they work from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with all the stat holidays and bonuses that other people in the workforce don’t get.

There are a lot more important questions in the City of Sarnia than

worrying about a bunch of staffers who don’t have to worry about their job performance.

The City of Sarnia isn’t really a corporation, because there is no one who has executive powers to chart its direction, and that is why we are in a state of retrogression. We have a council more worried about its code of conduct than the state of the city.

This letter was hard to write and if it seems offensive, I apologize. But, whatever you say, someone is going to take offence.

City is going backwards

Sir: We, as a community, have to come together to ensure our existing parks are protected.

City council has declared part of Baxter Park and the former Kinsmen community centre on Lakeshore Road surplus, which would allow homes to be built on parkland.

A public consultation should have been held prior to that decision being made.

Since January of this year, the taxpayers of Sarnia have vehemently spoken through presentations, meetings, petitions and alternative proposals that the majority is against setting a precedent to put parkland on the chopping block to build residential homes.

The city is now backtracking and has, after the fact, decided to hold public consultations at the Clearwater Arena on June 13, from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.

This meeting is being used to present only the city’s proposals for residential housing on parkland.

They are not allowing the residents

of Sarnia to present a viable option, so that a community centre can remain in the north-end hub, in conjunction with the Strangway Centre, thus leaving parkland untouched by bureaucrats and developers. That is biased as best.

Is it mismanagement of taxpayer money that has prompted this situation to sell off parkland? We consistently hear from Mr. Mitro, “We need the money.”

Then correct your past mistakes with better management of our dollars to get the city back on track, and in the process leave our valuable assets alone.

To the taxpayers of Sarnia — please take time out of your busy schedule to attend the public meeting on June 13, from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Clearwater Arena, 1400 Wellington St. Have a voice through your presence. Our parks are not for sale.

Women Who Care packing the power of one – times 100

he generosity just keeps growing with Sarnia’s 100 Women Who Care chapter.

“We can actually see the benefit we are bringing to our community,” said Joanne Hines, who launched the chapter in 2015 and has since helped dole out more than $66,000 to seven deserving charities in Sarnia-Lambton.

“I think that’s why we keep growing and building; more and more people are coming out to meetings just to learn

about the different charitable organizations in our community and the impact we’ve made.”

The group, which has surpassed 100 members, is designed for like-minded women who want to give back but don’t necessarily have the time.

Members meet for one hour, four times a year, each representing a local charity of choice; three names are drawn and each one presents on behalf of their organization. The entire group votes on where the money will go, and each woman writes a

$100 cheque.

Most recently, the Brain Injury Association of Sarnia Lambton was the recipient of $10,500.

“They were so overwhelmed; this changes everything for them,” said Hines. “They don’t have the staffing to help promote their organization, because they’re all working to help the actual survivors, so they’re using this money to hire someone and they know this will make a huge impact.”

To date, the group has handed cheques, ranging from $7,000 to $10,500, to

“It’s opening the doors for these organizations, even if they don’t receive the donation,” said Hines. “The awareness is really effective in helping them.”

“Everyone is more than welcome to come and just observe at these meetings, to see if it’s something they want to get involved in,” she said.

“We’ve actually

started calling ourselves 100+ Women Who Care, because we don’t want anyone thinking it stops at 100.”

Exhibition reveals Sarnia’s early appreciation of fine art

T

he public has less than three more weeks to view a small but remarkable exhibition that highlights the importance and breadth of the JNAAG’s permanent collection.

The permanent collection belongs to the Sarnia-Lambton community and includes more than 1,500 pieces of art donated or purchased since the 1920s. It boasts many notable works, including numerous painting by the Group of Seven.

The Judith & Norman Alix Art Gallery (JNAAG) is attempting to get more of the permanent collection out for the public to see this summer with a series of exhibitions.

Arts Journal nors is on until June 25 in the Dr. J. Telford Biehn gallery at the top of the stairs on the second floor.

Fittingly Dr. Biehn donated a number of paintings to the permanent collection in the 1980s including works

by Franklin Carmichael, Arthur Lismer and J.E.H. Macdonald.

Several local families that donated paintings to the collection are honoured, including the Biehns, the Pokornys, the Gurds and the Cowens.

Later, they bought art and set the wheels in motion for a public art gallery built in the 1960s with the downtown library.

Was it great taste or great foresight – or both - that convinced the women to invite artists to their first exhibition who would later form the Group of Seven? How could they have known the importance of their purchases when the Group of Seven had no

profile or national recognition yet?

“At the time, the Group of Seven were very contemporary in the way they used colour in their landscapes,” explains assistant curator Sonya Blazek who chose the paintings for the current exhibition.

Nine of the original 25 works purchased by the art association are on display. Four are Group of Seven and the others are their contemporaries, including Lowrie Warrener.

Warrener was born in Sarnia in 1900 and inspired to paint after meeting Arthur Lismer at the 1920 exhibition hosted by the Sarnia Women’s Conservation Committee.

A generation of Sarnians became familiar with Warrener’s work when they walked into the library and saw The Happy Cottage, which hung in the children’s department for many years.

In fact, The Happy Cottage had been commissioned by the Lambton Loan Company on Maria Street. The loan company didn’t like the way War-

rener had distorted the building and sold it to the committee.

While A Keen Eye: Early Donors seems to focus on earlier donations to the permanent collection, there’s at least one that was given to the gallery in 2016. A.J. Casson’s October Storm – Lake Baptiste was a gift from Judy Biehn and Arthur Craig in memory of Dr. Beihn, and has never been exhibited before.

The exhibition is generating a lot of traffic at the gallery, said Blazek.

“I think everyone in our community should take pride there’s such rich art history here.”

On Friday, a concurrent exhibition opened on the JNAAG’s third floor that focuses on modern works within the permanent collection and newer donations. It’s called The Bold & The New and runs until Aug. 6.

Anyone who wants to see more of the collection’s Group of Seven should plan on going to Heavy Hitters, which is scheduled July 7 – Aug. 6.

Team from Lambton College making a world of difference

n rural Zambia where farmers struggle to provide for their families, a team from Lambton College is spearheading a new venture to make peanut butter.

That’s right. Hippy Peanut Butter comes in jars sporting a smiling purple hippopotamus, and it’s making a difference after just four months.

“The climate is good to grow peanuts,” explains 21-year-old Megan Rizzo, one of nine students with the award-winning team, which has taught Zambian farmers how to sort their peanut crop, shell the nuts, roast and skin them, then mash them up into peanut butter.

The team’s manufacturing centre is extremely modest by North American standards, with only one mashing machine producing about 250 jars of peanut butter a week.

A major Zambian grocery chain has already requested 2,500 jars of Hippy Peanut Butter a week, a goal the Lambton College team wants to help the

farmers meet this year.

At the root of the operation is a no-till farming technique the team introduced to Zambia’s rural population in 2012.

That’s when a handful of students and teachers from the college joined Enactus, a worldwide organization dedicated to a better, more sustainable world through entrepreneurship.

The group initially focused on Kasaka Zambia, a village of about 1,200 farmers where one of Lambton College’s international students grew up.

“We listened to their dreams, their hopes and then we went in to help them,” says Jon Milos, director of entrepreneurship with the Lambton team, which has now grown to about 40 students.

With the advice of agribusiness leaders in Canada and Zambia, the Lambton College team launched Project One Seed and taught the rural farmers that no-till farming decreases erosion and keeps moisture and nutrients in the soil. They found the method increased yields and revenue three to five times.

A farmer who increases his revenue has money left over to reinvest in his community, explained Courtney Neilson, a 27-year-old human resources student who just returned from 12 days in Zambia.

Once the issue of food security was addressed, the farmers had money to build community taps, irrigation systems, schools, health clinics and now a peanut butter manufacturing facility in their community.

“We’re seeing school enrolment increase 50% in Gaali, Zambia,” said Neilson. “The kids had been staying home to help farm but now they go to Continued on page 17

“Honestly, it was life changing,” Rizzo said, pointing to photographs of school children wearing shoes and sunglasses she gave them.

“People there were so grateful for the smallest things. It gives me a special appreciation for everything we have.

“I’m not done there,” Rizzo said. “I want to continue our work.”

As a faculty member, Milos has been to Zambia 20 times with the college’s Enactus team.

“It’s so humbling every time you go,” he said.

“When you return, you see the excess we have here every single day and it affects you.”

He’s excited about the prospects for Hippy Peanut Butter production.

“It we can expand to a

full-fledged commercial venture and hike production to 2,500 jars a week, that’s going to create a lot of jobs,” he said.

Enactus Lambton College team members are not only excited about prospects in Zambia, their confidence was boosted in late May with a prestigious Canadian award.

Enactus Canada named the team the 2017 TD Entrepreneurship Challenge National champs at its national exposition in Vancouver.

The Lambton College team competed against colleges and universities across the country, and was also runner-up for the Scotiabank Eco-Living Challenge and the Walmart Women’s Economic Empowerment competition.

Police report of wandering cows was no bum steer identification tags.

Knowing the steaks were high, the officers hoofed it to a number of nearby farms. But when asked, each of the occupants was herd to say the loose cows were udderly unknown to them.

Sarnia Police Constable John Sottosanti told The Journal that livestock roaming onto roadways in the city is not uncommon.

Pipe crashes through school ceiling JOURNAL STAFF

he Ontario Labour Ministry investigated an incident at St. Patrick’s high school in which a lead pipe fell through the ceiling of a classroom.

The second-floor classroom was being used by a Grade 9 geography class on May 31 when the metre-long (three-foot) pipe

came crashing through the ceiling.

No injuries were reported by staff or students, and the class was immediately relocated to the library.

Scott Johnson, superintendent of education at the St. Clair District Catholic School Board, said a pipe that had not been properly secured when the school was constructed in 1995 was

loosened by ongoing roofing work.

School staff and Bullock Roofing had determined the construction posed no safety risk to students, Johnson said.

“This incident has caused us to certainly reconsider that.”

The Ministry contacted the school after being informed of the incident and immediately dispatched two investigators

to the site. They told The Journal on June 2 that no orders were issued.

Johnson said the roof repairs have been suspended during school hours and will only take place between 2:30 p.m. and 11 p.m. daily.

After-school programs and community use in affected areas of the school will also be halted until the work is complete, he added.

Retiree finds envelope filled with cash, turns it in to police

arnia’s Rita Smith was taking a 20-minute exercise walk around her east-end neighbour-

hood recently when she spotted an envelope lying on the sidewalk.

Not wanting to break stride, the retired nurse scooped it up and continued on her way while

listening to Stephen King’s “The Stand” in her headphones.

Upon getting home, though, she examined the envelope more closely and suspected it might contain money.

“I was feeling really torn,” she said. “This isn’t really mine. I shouldn’t count it.”

Eventually, however, curiosity won out. The envelope contained $1,020 in cash.

Smith said she joked with herself that it was obviously a reward from a higher power for being so diligent at physical fitness.

“That is the washer-dryer I want,” she admits thinking.

But, Smith called Sarnia Police. Officers retrieved the envelope and on May 23 police issued a news release advising that a quantity of cash had been found on Finch Drive.

Two hours later, the

rightful owner claimed the money after providing a meticulous description of the envelope and its contents.

“The Sarnia Police Service would like to thank the good Samaritan for this act of kindness, especially in these times when the news is not always so good,” said Const.

Smith said she did the right thing because she knows what it’s like to

do without. At one point after separating from her husband, she said, she struggled to attend classes at Lambton College while raising an infant granddaughter.

“Times were really tough then,” she said.

“Money was really short.”

Smith added she doesn’t want a reward, and if one were offered she would give it to the Inn of the Good Shepherd.

Lily the Pink’s compound a cure for ‘female complaints’

hile researching a story recently about a 1914 sawmill fire in Sarnia I came across an item both strange and fascinating.

“Two Nervous Women,” was the heading of the single-column story in the Sarnia Observer.

It told the tale of two women who had been cured of “palpitation of the heart, constipation, and stomach cramps” by consuming Lydia E Pinkham’s Vegetable Compound.

Reading it made one of my favourite Irish Rovers songs leap to mind. It’s called, “Lily the Pink,” and the chorus goes like this: “We’ll drink a drink a drink To Lily the pink the pink the pink The saviour of the human race.

She invented medicinal compounds.

Most efficacious in every case. “ A little investigating soon determined that the Rovers song was, indeed, written about Lydia Estes Pinkham. She was born in Lynn, Massachusetts in 1819 to a large Quaker family and became an early feminist and abolitionist. In fact, the great abolitionist leader Frederick Douglas was a neighbour and family friend.

Her “Vegetable Compounds” were a mixture of herbal concoctions and drinking alcohol. Despite the delicate wording, women of the Gilded Age and early 20th century understood that the mixture was designed as a relief for menstrual cramps, although, as some of the Rovers’ lyrics make clear, many viewed the medicinal compounds as quackery.

“Uncle Paul, he Was very small, he Was the shortest man in town.

Rubbed his body With medicinal compounds.

Now he weighs only half a pound.”

The article demonstrated that Lydia did indeed have her share of fans. A woman named Mary Johnston wrote that, after hearing tales of Vegetable Compounds having cured symptoms similar to her own, “I threw away the medicines the doctors left me and began taking the Compound. Before I had taken half a bottle I was able to sit up and in a short time I was able to do all my work.”

She went on to describe how she had become a crusader for the product, “recommending it in every household I have visited.”

Such testimonials helped make Lydia Pinkham’s Vegetable Compound one of the most popular patent medicines of the 19th century.

Mass-marketed as a family business with her son from 1875 onwards, many women felt the concoction worked, and versions of Lydia E. Pinkham’s Vegetable Compound remain on the market to this very day.

Northern Collegiate’s Carter Barron won golds in the 400 metre and 200 metre dash, and St. Patrick’s Luc Lacroix won the midget 100 metre and 200 metre dash.

Northern’s Matt Boyce threw the discus 51.94 metres while teammate Sebastian Smith sailed to a height of 2.02 metres in senior boys high jump, both good enough for gold.

With an almost flawless season thus far, wheelchair sprinter Abbey LeBlanc from Alexander MacKenzie won the 200 metre.

The design gives the school forged through the amalgamation of SCITS and St. Clair a new and collective identity that will be used on stationary, social media, student cards and new athletic uniformed expected by the start of the school year in September. The wolfpack was chosen as the mascot both for the strength of the wolf and for the inclusivity it brings to the pack, said teacher April Brander of the school’s identity committee.
