Heigh-Ho, it’s off to skate we go
Early signs suggest summer ship festival will be tall and large

THIS GROUP FROM the Point Edward Early Learning Centre is warmly dressed —and well padded — as they trundle off to a learn-to-skate class at the village arena last week. The free program takes place Wednesday mornings, thanks to a small army of volunteers and parents. Big person Janice Smith brings up the rear while Carlie Foubister, not seen, leads the pack. hough he strongly disagrees with his intensions, Bill Dennis says he regrets calling fellow city councillor Mike Stark a “big spender” during a Feb. 11 meeting and has reached out to apologize. Stark confirmed he received the private apology and a
commitment from Dennis to apologize publicly at the next council meeting. “I assured Bill that he was not the first nor will he be the last that got caught up in the emotion of the debate, and that lessons can be learned from this incident,” Stark said in an email. “Moving forward we will all try to do better.” Tempers flared over a debate about council expenses and

compensation. “You’re a big spender. I guess it doesn’t really matter,” Dennis fired at Stark. “I take exception to that,” Stark replied. “Of course you do,” countered Dennis. “I accept your apology,” Stark said. “There’s no apology, trust me,” Dennis responded. At the time, Coun. Dave
Boushy was trying to chair the meeting in the absence of Mayor Mike Bradley. Boushy didn’t acknowledge the exchange and moved on to the next item of business. Stark said he has apologized to Boushy for creating a “difficult situation.” For his part, Coun. Dennis said he was having a bad day.

ore than $45,000 worth of tickets to the Sarnia Tall Ships Challenge have already been sold to people as far away as Arizona, North Carolina and Alberta, City Hall says. Council authorized spending up to $500,000 last week to host the festival, which will see at least six tall ships tie up on Sarnia’s waterfront August 9-11. If there’s a shortfall, the city will be on the hook for the difference. But parks and recreation director Rob Harwood said he’s confident revenue will meet or exceed the upfront costs. “It’s just so unique. I think that obviously plays well into the success,” he said. Sponsorships have also raised more than $70,000 so far and staff is working on government grants that have yet to be announced, Harwood said. “We’re getting a lot more community support than what was reached out for in the past.” Another big draw is the fact the tall ship celebration is partnering that weekend with the Bluewater Borderfest music festival and Artzscape by the Bay art show, exposing those who visit to other amenities the city has to offer, he said.
