ormer Sarnia Sting forward Daniel Carcillo is returning to the city this week to share his story and offer support to other victims of harassment, bullying and abuse. “The whole allure around me is I have an NHL career and two Stanley Cups. I really don’t give a s--t about that,” said Carcillo, who came forward last year with allegations of physical abuse he and other rookies experienced with the Sting during the 2002-03 season. “I’m a human being, and emotional trauma, physical trauma and sexual abuse is wrong, on any level. I don’t want it to be called hazing anymore, I want it to be called abuse.” Hosted by the Male Ally Coalition, the event at the Lochiel Kiwanis Centre is aimed at Sarnia-area hockey players and family members. The notice promises “no cost, no media, no spectators and no judgment.” “It’s not a weakness to speak about your feelings, it’s a strength,” said Carcillo, who retired as a member of the Chicago Blackhawk. “When you speak honestly and vulnerably you can hopefully impact a life.” Mental health professionals will be hand for the special peer support meeting, said co-organizer Brian White. SARNIA MAYOR MIKE Bradley reacts as Liam Henderson makes a point during a reception for the 2018 Mayor’s Honour List recipients on Feb. 5. The Errol Road School student, one of 23 individuals and organizations recognized, was describing his appearance last year on CBC-TV’s Canada’s Smartest Person Junior. As a national audience looked on, Liam had offered words of encouragement to another contestant, who was trailing badly and in tears. The gesture of kindness worked, the other contestant won three straight challenges, and Liam was eliminated from the competition but made the city proud. GLENN OGILVIE The Journal

core one more for Sarnia’s burgeoning bio-industrial sector. Imtex Membranes Corp. has announced it will break ground this summer on an $8-million to $10-million demonstration plant in the Arlanxeo bio-industrial park on Vidal Street. “We’re excited about the investment,” says Stephen Thompson, CEO at the Sarnia-Lambton Economic Partnership (SLEP). “Imtex is

a great fit for our continued growth in the bio-industrial sector.” The demonstration plant will showcase Imtex’s patented gas separation process called PermyleneTM, developed eight years ago at the University of Waterloo. The process uses a chemical membrane to separate olefins – the building blocks of polymers and plastics - from paraffins like propane, butane and ethane. Imtex’s technology is cheaper than conventional processes and reduces capital and operating costs by more than 30%,
says President Karlis Vasarais. The company already has $22 million invested in R & D, as well as a pilot project in Mississauga, he said. When Imtex started scouting around for a site to build its demonstration plant, Sarnia was suggested by one of Vasarais’ business partners involved with a new biodiesel facility in Sombra. “It makes good sense to build near our customers,” Vasarais said. “Sarnia has the suppliers and customers, as well as the industrial park with the established infrastructure that we
need.” The community also offers the technicians and operators Imtex will require, he added. If the company’s new technology can be successfully marketed at the demonstration plant, the plan is to expand it into a full-sized processing facility worth about $20 million. The initial demonstration plant will employ about 20 fulltime workers and is expected to be operational in 12 to15 months. The full processing plant would take three years to complete and employ about 50. Continued on 2
