arilyn Gladu is carrying a message of inclusion into the most expensive leadership contest in Canadian political history.

The Sarnia-Lambton MP is one of half a dozen declared candidates seeking to lead the Conservative Party of Canada.

Each must pay an entry fee of $300,000 — one-third refundable — and get signatures from at least 3,000 party members from 30 electoral districts in seven provinces and territories to qualify.

“I said to myself, ‘We need a strong and likeable leader,’ Gladu, 57, said of her decision to run.

“When I heard about who might be running… I thought this is the same old, same old.

Really, we need somebody that can grow the base and who knows how to lead.”

To start, Gladu has put up $25,000 of her own money. She has already met the seven-province requirement, a result of contacting riding associations and fellow Tory MPs coast to coast, she said.

Local Conservatives can boost her bid by attending a nomination paper-signing event Feb. 4 at the Navy Club, 1420 Lougar St. from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. It will be repeated Feb. 18.

Only party members can sign nomination papers and vote in the leadership race.

W

hat’s left of two decaying Holmes Foundry buildings and the overgrowth covering the property could be gone by the end of March, officials say.

Demolition and cleanup will dramatically improve the look of the 16-acre (6.5 hectare) Exmouth Street property, which has been derelict since

Chrysler closed its foundry 30 years ago.

Village council has awarded a contract to Watford-based Schouten Excavating, the same company that cleared the former Sarnia General Hospital site.

Schouten is scheduled to start the work in mid-February and be done in four to six weeks, weather permitting, the village said.

marketability and chances for development, said Ray Lariviere, one of 17 shareholders of Point Edward Gateway Inc. That’s the company formed after a lengthy and complex court battle determined Lariviere owns the land with several other, mostly local, residents.

A deal struck earlier this month between the village and Gateway Inc. to undertake the cleanup is “a win-win-win for everyone,” said Lariviere.

“We (the owners) will bene-

fit, the village will benefit and the entire county will benefit.

We’re finally able to move ahead.”

The courts granted Gateway Inc. ownership in 2017 but the company was financially exhausted from years of legal wrangling. According to Lariviere, Gateway was broke when the village asked Lambton County to issue a property standards order in October to demolish the buildings.

Journal’s ‘Wax Man’ story takes on life of its own PHIL EGAN THE JOURNAL

A

n award-winning Toronto filmmaker was in Sarnia last week to work on the macabre story of John McMillan, a.k.a. the ‘Wax Man.’ Cat Mills was intrigued after reading a Sarnia Journal story from 2018 entitled: ‘Wax Man’s plea to “Dig me up in 50 years” remains unfulfilled.’

It told the tale of Petrolia oil tycoon John McMillan who, upon his death in 1891, asked that his body be buried encased in a block of paraffin wax and disinterred half a century later to determine its state of preservation.

Half his request was honoured. Holes were drilled in the top of the casket and, after some difficulty —McMillan’s nose kept poking up through the wax — his coffin topped up with hot

paraffin.

But the body lies undisturbed at Petrolia’s Hillside Cemetery 129 years later.

Mills, whose work has appeared on CBC, TVO and CNN, is making a documentary about McMillan and came to Sarnia-Lambton with colleague Perry Walker to dig further into the mysterious case.

Born in Scotland, John McMillan came to Canada at the age of 37 and eventually made his way to Petrolia. He was a successful oilman, with as many as 80 working oil wells, a refinery and a paraffin wax plant.

McMillan suffered ill health late in life and died at his stately Petrolia home in 1891 of Bright’s disease, a complication of diabetes. During his final years he grew eccentric and obsessed with death and the afterlife.

the Ontario Genealogical Society may be enlisted to help track down any family members.

If family can’t be located, the Bereavement Authority of Ontario, which regulates provincial cemeteries, could be asked for permission to fulfill the Wax Man’s final request, as stipulated in his last will and testament.

Could “Dig me up after 50 years” become “Dig me up after 130 years?”

One thing’s for sure. If approval is ever granted, The Journal and Cat Mills’ camera crew will be there to tell the rest of the story.

“I am sure it’s not contaminated anywhere close to what the general public thinks,” he said.

“There’s a stigma attached to the property that is hard to shake, but people forget that Chrysler spent $8.5 million in 1989 and

For this community that’s an important thing,” she said.

“We have to stop pitting one group against another group and just recognize that if we’re going to have our individual

freedoms then we’ve got to give everybody else their individual freedoms.”

Others running for party leader include former Progressive Conservative leader Peter MacKay, B.C. businessman Rick Peterson, Ontario MP Derek Sloan, former Harper advisor Aron Seal, Toronto businessman Bobby Singh, and possibly undeclared Ontario MP Erin O’Toole.

Many high-profile Conservatives have said they aren’t running, including Bernier, Jean Charest, Rona Ambrose and Caroline Mulroney.

The new party leader will be elected June 27 in Toronto.

Burns said the intent is to remove all vegetation from the former Holmes Foundry site, including large trees and tall patches of invasive phragmites reeds that cover much of it.

The trees are coming down for security purposes, he said.

“We’ve had people living in wooded areas of the village, so we want it cleared properly.”

Industrial tax to pay for bridge

arnia will use a new tax it’s charging on local industry this year to replace the Donohue Bridge.

Council voted 5-4 to direct the entire $500,000 annual levy on petrochemical companies to the twin spans that link South Vidal Henry Plater

Street and Chemical Valley.

The Donohue Bridge is scheduled for replacement in 2033 at a cost of $15 million.

Council approved the levy in December after reducing it from the $1 million recommended by city staff.

Sarnia’s hockey history - city arena a community effort RANDY EVANS & KEN MACZKO

O

n Jan. 17, 1941, a game was played between St. Paul’s and the St. John’s Saints of the Sarnia Church Hockey League.

The tilt had a rather unChristian-like grittiness. According to one report it featured a “free for all scrap which spiced the proceedings.”

Such was the enthusiasm for hockey in 1940s Sarnia. By the end of the decade, no fewer than nine leagues were playing on natural ice rinks across the city and Pt. Edward.

At that time, all hockey games were played outdoors because the city’s only indoor rink, St. Andrews, had closed in 1936.

Unfortunately, the weather didn’t always co-operate. Warm winters would shorten hockey seasons, and in 1946 play didn’t begin until the third week of January. Soft ice also hindered the pace and quality of play.

Rink maintenance costs rose.

It was recognized for decades that Sarnia’s hockey players and fans needed a covered rink, with predictable artificial ice.

One attempt had failed but then, in 1945, the Sarnia Kiwanis Club announced an ambitious proposal. It called for an arena equipped with the newest technology and seating for 2,400 for hockey and 5,000 for concerts. Estimated cost was $150,000, or about $2.2 million in today’s dollars.

“This will go over big,” predicted club past president Charles S. Maclean. “It is something long overdue in Sarnia.”

Sarnia council quickly and consistently balked at providing any financial assistance.

So building the Sarnia Arena became a true citizen project.

Energized, perhaps, by the absence of political and bureaucratic interference, 237 members of the Kiwanis, Kinsmen, Lions, Optimists and Rotary clubs got together, pledged 10% of the estimated construction cost, and offered to fundraise the rest.

The service clubs promised not one dime would go to their own expenses.

The idea caught fire. Fundraising began throughout the city. Labour, industry and businesses donated generously, and Ontario kicked in $9,000.

For the rest, there was benefit dinners and door-to-door canvassing. A new car was raffled.

contributed five cents or ten cents each week, depending on whether they attended elementary or high school.

When enough money was in hand, a contract was awarded to R.W. Mackay, a local building contractor. It was understood that construction would proceed only as and when

funds were available.

As it happened, the cost of construction rose to $250,000 ($3.7 million today). At times, the money ran low, but doubled-down efforts were successfully instituted.

Most importantly, local tradesmen generously volunteered their time and skill

to defray costs and keep the project moving along.

On Dec. 17, 1947, thousands of residents attended an open house to view the almost completed Sarnia Arena.

And in the New Year, the first teams took the ice to launch another chapter in Sarnia’s hockey history.

Most of my library was bought at my neighbourhood Chapters store in Glen Abbey. I was a frequent customer. Every clerk in the sprawling store knew my name and the kind of books I liked; mainly history and politics.

The Christmas before we moved back to Sarnia, Heather Reisman even sent me a book in the mail as a Christmas gift.

Ms. Reisman, owner of the Indigo Books and Music chain of stores that includes Chapters and Coles, had apparently noticed the substantial sums I spent at her Oakville store.

mail.

One of Canada’s most successful and influential businesswomen and a well-known philanthropist, Heather Reisman was recently appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada.

She also appears to have one additional, terrifying claim to fame.

She knows when I’m going to die.

I discovered this recently when a clerk in a London Chapters store inspected my card, looked up and uttered the following words: “Did you know that your Lifetime Chapters card has an expiry date attached to it?”

I was stunned. Lifetime, after all, means lifetime. Yet Heather Reisman apparently knew exactly when my Lifetime card would no longer be any of use to me.

Possibly amused by my speechless response, the clerk blurted out the date. As U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo might say, it is “imminent.”

In other words, somewhere down the road.

I have a wife, two sons, and the feelings of eight brothers and sisters to protect — so I will not reveal the date here.

But I know. And so, incredibly, does Heather.

“He got it by spending a fortune at your Oakville store,” my wife blurted out in response.

The clerk at the mall bookstore had glanced at the back of my Chapters card, to see if the discount card was still valid. It was, though I hadn’t used it in nine years. Search a man’s wallet and you’ll be amazed at what you might find.

The clerk’s surprise was the “lifetime membership” sticker affixed to the back of the card.

These, apparently, are only

slightly less rare than unicorns, according to staff at the Chapters bookstore in my old hometown of Oakville where I used it with some frequency.

I had a library at home of more than 8,000 books: a symptom of the voracious reading habit I inherited from my father. He had so many books in our home the floors sagged under the weight of them.

She met Dwayne, a multi-instrumentalist, at an open mic and invited him to put a show together with Wulf on sax.

They rehearsed a few times, and Missy says she was impressed with the vocal harmonies.

That night, the audience seemed to become part of the performance.

“When we finished playing I felt totally satisfied,” she said.

“The collaboration was strong that night,” agreed Dwayne.

He had quietly set up video cameras and microphones around the room to record the session. “I told no one I was

Musicians Missy Burgess, Dwayne Cloes and Wulf Von Waldow casually got together to play one show at the Lawrence House Centre for the Arts in October 2018.

All seasoned artists in their own right, they packed the Turret Room, a small space with perfect acoustics on the second floor of the Christina Street mansion.

And, as Missy says, they brought their “A” game that night.

“There’s some magic in that room that makes everything sound so good,” he said.

It was a night of blues, jazz and some folk written by Missy, as well as several covers including a few Tom Waits’ tunes, Fever by Eddie Cooley and Otis Blackwell, and Big Blue Train by Lee Rocker.

“I had no intention of ever doing another CD,” said Missy, who has released three others. “But I heard this and thought it was too good not to be released.”

In his home studio,

Dwayne invited Dave Doyle to add some bass, then mixed and produced 14 songs from the 2018 live performance.

Dave has since joined the band.

A release party took place last weekend in the same room the original show took place.

T

he St. Clair Region Conservation Authority appears ready to help local property owners get the permits they need to build shoreline protection and halt Lake Huron erosion.

Angry landowners have claimed the Authority and its complicated permit-issuing

process is preventing them from installing new protective infrastructure at their own cost.

Some are even warned to let nature take its course or face prosecution, said Kristen Rodrigues, spokesperson for the citizen group Shoreline Erosion Collective Coalition.

But, pending board approval, the process might soon be simplified, Authority general manager Brian McDougall told The Journal following a Jan. 13 site inspection in Bright’s Grove.

ork to secure the public shoreline in Bright’s Grove will begin in a few weeks, the first tangible sign of Sarnia’s new 10-year, $25-million plan to slow Lake Huron’s advance.

Three tenders have been awarded at a total cost of $4.7 million.

Two sections of lakefront between Helen Avenue and Kenwick Streets are to be secured, as well as a stretch of Old Lakeshore Road in front of Marion Avenue.

Tragicomic musical ‘Fun Home’ bidding for festival nod CATHY

eventeen-year-old Chloe Brescia is quick with answers on why she loves her character in Theatre Sarnia’s production of Fun Home.

Brescia plays Alison Bechdel at age 19, when she goes off to college and her first same-sex relationship.

“Alison was the first lesbian protagonist on Broadway,” says Brescia. “It’s a true story and I think the real Alison Bechdel was very brave to put out a book about her life and her dysfunctional family.

“We’ve all become so passionate about this story and so attached to the characters.”

Bechdel wrote Fun Home as an autobiographical “tragicomic” that examines her painful relationship with a volatile and

brilliant father, the secrets within her family while she grew up, and her own coming out.

Time Magazine named Fun Home one of the 10 best books of the year in 2006. It was later adapted as a Broadway show by Lisa Kron and Jeanine Tesori and lauded for its courage and vulnerability.

Alison is represented at different ages. In Theatre Sarnia’s production, Mya Perkins plays 10-year-old Alison. Brescia is Alison at 19, and Henri Davis-Canino plays adult Alison, a successful American cartoonist in her 40s.

Brescia answers questions about the show in rapid succession until asked why a memoir dealing with such serious themes as the death of Bechdel’s father and her struggle with identity, was made into a musical.

She pauses for a bit, then thoughtfully explains.

“It’s not a musical. It’s a play with music,” she said.

Notably, the Broadway production of Fun Home was nominated for 12 Tony Awards and won five including Best Musical in 2015.

“There are songs in it that make me so misty, like ‘Telephone Wire’ and ‘Days and Days,’” said Brescia. “They aren’t just wonderful songs, they move the plot forward.”

Brescia is one of nine cast members working with director Holly Wenning, producer Charmaine Jacklin, and music director Cy Giacomin on what hopes to be Theatre Sarnia’s entry at this year’s Western Ontario Drama League Festival.

“I think this is a play that opens a lot of eyes,” said Brescia. “You never really know what happens behind closed doors.”

Theatre Sarnia’s run of Fun Home is four nights only. It plays nightly at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday to Saturday this week.

Theatre Sarnia tends to stage its competition shows in January so they’re fresh for the festival, says Fun Home producer Charmaine Jacklin. But, because it’s winter and a lot of theatregoers are away, the run is limited to four nights.

“We know January is our smallest house,” said Jacklin.

“We do it for the art and we’re happy if we break even.”

The North Lambton Community Health Centre is currently seeking applicants for the following position:

Primary Care Team Lead 0.8 FTE Permanent - 30 Hours/Week - Sarnia The Primary Care Team Lead will ensure an integrated and interdisciplinary approach to the planning, delivery, and evaluation of client-centered clinical programs. This includes functioning interdependently with other members of the primary care team and administration team; and to function independently to perform various clinical, clerical, and organizational tasks to assist in the delivery of primary care services and in support of care for the Centre’s clients. The Primary Care Team Lead will act as the Privacy Officer and will assist with infection control responsibilities.

Qualifications: • Registered professional in Nursing (BScN or Masters preferred) and/or another health-related discipline; • Current registration with College of Nurses of Ontario and a member in good standing, or corresponding college; • Minimum 5 years’ management experience; • Additional training and/or experience in a community setting or combination of community and hospital or public health settings, experience in a primary care setting an asset; • Experience in working in the areas of infection control and client care; • Knowledgeable of privacy legislation and PHIPA regulations, or willingness to learn; • Strong computer skills, including the use of MS Office products and Electronic Medical Records.

This position enjoys a supportive environment with flexible hours, 30 hours per week Tuesday to Friday. Racing driver, 10, already a veteran at Grand Bend track TROY SHANTZ THE JOURNAL

W

hen Logan Chapman informed his mother he wanted to become a race car driver, she was reluctant.

Understandably.

He was 6 years old.

“Mom,” he said. “I may look like you but racing is in my blood.”

Nor has Logan’s passion diminished with age, Melissa Chapman said.

“When he’s not racing he can’t wait to get back into that car and onto the track.”

Now 10, Logan recently completed his third season of competition in the micro-sprint class at Grand Bend Speedway.

The Bridgeview School student in Point Edward and third-generation racer posted six first-place finishes.

“Logan wasn’t outside the top three all year,” said his dad and mechanic Jason Chapman.

“Our goal is always to have fun. If something this cool can’t be fun, there’s no point in doing it.”

During the May-toAugust race season father and son are often found in the family garage tinkering on Logan’s bright red, 6.5-horsepower sprint car.

The car, which can reach speeds of 65 km/h, bears the number 01 – the one his dad raced under.

Logan has played sports but is most comfortable on the track, like his father and grandfather.

day he brought the family, and when a friend won the race Logan, then 5, rode in the car for the victory lap around the track, waving the checkered flag.

“After that, he was hooked,” his dad said. “We weren’t hockey players or baseball players… we were car guys.”

In his second season of racing, Logan Chapman made the podium three times. In addition to the six victories this season, he had nine second-place finishes and four thirds.

“I think my best finish was a top 10,” his dad said.

“To hear, ‘the 01 Chapman is taking the lead,’ it gets you right here. I’m so proud of Logan’s accomplishments.”

Close calls and crashes are part of the sport, Jason Chapman said. A bent fender and stripped gear are mounted on the garage wall, a reminder that on the track things can change in an instant, he said.

Logan’s car has a full containment racing seat, five-point harness and roll bars. All racers wear helmets, fire suits and neck protection.

“When he’s leading I’m most nervous. They’re starting to use their bumpers more… they’re getting more aggressive.

Everybody wants that checkered flag,” Jason Chapman said.

Though not an inexpensive sport, he estimates it doesn’t cost any more than hockey. And a handful of sponsors help offset the costs, he added.

Logan Chapman plans to race Junior Sprint this year at Grand Bend, and compete in four races at Varney Speedway in Durham, Ont.
