arnia native Sami Khan can’t quite believe he’ll share the red carpet in a few weeks with Robert De Niro, Al Pacino and other Hollywood stars at this year’s Academy Awards.

Khan will attend the glittery affair in Los Angeles with Bruce Franks Jr., the subject of the film Khan co-directed with U.S. filmmaker Smriti Mundhra.

Their project, St. Louis Superman, is nominated in the short documentary category.

“It feels a little crazy, as you can imagine,” said Khan. “I don’t think the full weight of it will occur for years to come.”

Ten years ago, Khan was in his final year of film school at New York’s Columbia University and shooting his thesis project in Sarnia.

75 El Camino used the Chemical Valley and streets of south Sarnia as the backdrop to a story about what home means.

It drew enough critical acclaim to premier at the Toronto International Film Festival and jump-started a career in a very tough industry.

Fast forward a decade and Khan, 40, has earned an Oscar nomination for his work on the 28-minute documentary.

Older men more prone to depression: expert

s men age they are disproportionately prone to depression and thoughts of suicide, a local mental health expert says.

“Men are encouraged to be strong, not admit that they’re struggling, or do not want

to seem weak,” said Sabrina Ferrari, a front line worker with the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA).

“Men are less likely to seek help, and based on consultations… antidepressants were prescribed 8% less for men.”

Depression is the most common mental health problem for older adults but is not a normal part of ageing, the social worker

with CMHA’s geriatric outreach team told the Golden K Kiwanis Club on Jan. 15.

Earlier estimates suggested as many as 56% of long-term care residents are depressed. But new studies say it could be as high as 90%, she told the largely male and older audience at the Lochiel Kiwanis Community Centre.

Continued from 1 St. Louis Superman tells the story of Franks, a charismatic activist and battle rapper from Missouri. He was elected to the mostly Republican House of Representatives, where he tirelessly advocated ending the gun violence that killed his brother and countless friends.

Audiences at the Hot Docs Canadian International Festival in Toronto voted St. Louis Superman the top short film. It also won prizes on the festival circuit, including at Tribeca, Hot Docs, AFI Docs, Traverse City, Indy Shorts, Pittsburgh Shorts, Hawaii, St. Louis, and Rhode Island.

Sarnians had a chance to see St. Louis Superman in November at a cineSarnia series, which Khan attended.

“There’s a depth to Bruce’s story that you don’t find that often,” he said.

“For me, it was like working with a dream team.”

Franks “storytelling superpowers” made the film successful, he said.

“And, I think for Bruce, it helped him continue to do his work.”

Franks and Khan spoke just hours after the Oscar nomination was announced, when “all our phones were blowing up,” Khan said.

“He’s keeping it real and realizes this will be a whole new level of exposure. His story will travel the world.”

The Northern Collegiate grad finished his thesis in Sarnia in 2019, graduated from Columbia, and hasn’t stopped working. He usually has more than one project on the go.

Currently, Khan and his wife live in Toronto where he’s a writer on a primetime medical drama, The Transplant, and is in post production on a doc about Cuban defectors who dream of playing baseball in the U.S. “I always work. It’s my nature,” said Khan, the son of Sarnia’s Anne and Dr. Rauf Khan. “But there’s a difference between work-

ing and working with pay.”

Success in the film industry does not come easily, and the past decade has been a lot of hard work, especially to fund his many projects.

“It’s really difficult to find money for films, especially short documentary films,” he said.

“You need to find champions who will take a risk on you and understand why it’s important to tell stories generally not covered by mainstream media.”

He hopes an Oscar nomination will make it easier for him to find those champions.

St. Louis Superman was produced by Khan, Mundhra, and Poh Si Teng for AJE Witness, and was acquired by documentary executive Sheila Nevins for MTV Documentary Films after its Tribeca Screening last spring.

St. Louis Superman is one of five nominees in the short documentary category. The 92nd annual Academy Awards takes place in Los Angeles on Feb. 9.

In 2018, 2,880 Canadian men took their own lives, according to Statistics Canada, making it the 8th most common killer.

Ferrari said men are 87% less likely to seek mental health support.

While women attempt suicide more, men are more successful.

When someone talks about suicide, even in passing, you should take

note and not brush it off.

A friend will lend an ear and validate that person’s feelings, she added.

“Almost anything can be the ‘why’ in terms of the reason for thinking about it. But the common theme is the unbearable, intolerable emotional pain,” said Ferrari.

“We hope that you can start to see the signs early enough that (suicide) is not necessarily the end result.”

Antidepressants work.

They are not, as often believed, addictive, and the side effects are often mild and disappear over time, she said.

Some prescription drugs take as long as 12 weeks to begin to work so patience is needed, she said.

“It is a journey.”

Habitat HandyMan program tackling jobs big and small

ou might not associate Habitat for Humanity with business, but the non-profit’s growing HandyMan program operates very much like one.

It’s a social enterprise that generates hundreds of thousands in revenue annually, employs three people, engages the help of dozens of volunteers, and channels the earnings into Habitat’s home building program.

Everything from big jobs like new decks and cabinetry, to small tasks like wall painting and pressure washing are available. Low-income earners pay a subsidized price while everyone else pays standard industry rates.

Those who qualify for subsidy can sometimes get the work done for half the commercial rate, he said.

Free deconstruction is also a focus of Habitat, which is always looking for old kitchen cupboards, windows, doors and other building material being discarded.

Habitat crews will systematically dismantle all or part of a house in order to reuse, recycle or repurpose them.

might have had 10 or 15 a month before but now we’re getting 30 a month.”

That led to a third paid Handyman position and a need for more volunteers.

The same number can be used to get a project quote.

Volunteers don’t necessarily require much experience.

They are supervised by skilled workers and can be trained on the job.

Like the volunteers who assist with Habitat home builds, HandyMan volunteers can find themselves doing drywall, landscaping, raising garages and installing siding.

Waters has noticed more applications for larger renovations but there’s still a demand

proven successful, and last year the HandyMan program took on 139 projects. About half received discount pricing after providing proof of income.

This year is shaping up to be the busiest yet.

Waters predicts at least 200 families will be served.

Applications have doubled since Oct. 31 when the Lambton Seniors Association shut down its handyman program.

Waters can’t draw a clear line between that cancellation and Habitat’s growing numbers but suspects they’re related.

“In late 2019, we had a big influx of applications,” he said. “We

Climate expert paints sobering picture of the future

limate change is here, it will hit hard, and all we can do is prepare.

So says Gordon McBean, a professor at Western University’s Institute for Catastrophic Loss Reduction.

“The unfortunate thing is the climate is changing — at least until 2050, 2060 — even if we were to stop our emissions today, globally,” he told a standing-room-only crowd at a Jan. 8 Green Drinks forum.

The former assistant deputy minister at Environment Canada painted a sobering picture of what climate change will look like for generations to come.

Canada is warming at twice the global average, McBean told the monthly environmental roundtable, a result of growing concentrations of carbon dioxide and methane in earth’s atmosphere.

“As we go further north we get more warming, typically because the atmosphere is not so deep. The extra heat is melting more of the snow, so that makes less of the sunlight reflected,” he said.

“There’s a variety of factors that come together. Russia is

the same way.”

According to the World Economic Forum, extreme weather events including storms, drought and floods have surpassed nuclear war and cyber attacks as the greatest threats to civilization, McBean said.

And we’ve already seen what it looks like, he added.

Canada’s most costly natural disasters all occurred in the past 25 years, including the 2016 wildfires in Fort McMurray, Alberta flooding in 2012, and the Quebec ice storms in 1998.

McBean produced maps of Canada indicating a substantial increase in flood-causing precipitation along a band stretching north of the prairies and down through southern Ontario.

British Columbia can expect much drier, wildfire-prone temperatures, he said.

But everywhere will experience warming, he said.

Since the 1960s, the planet has warmed an average 0.2 degrees Celsius per decade. From 2030 to 2050 Ontario can expect temperatures to increase 1.5 to 2.9 degrees, he said.

Sarnia was the scene of the first Canadian kidnapping

T

he crime known to police of the day as the “snatch racket” first unfolded in Canada right here in Sarnia – at what was then known as Sarnia Beach: today, Bright’s Grove.

Before the kidnapping of brewery magnate John Sackville Labatt, abducting people of wealth for ransom was considered an American crime. Two years earlier, the snatching of aviation hero Charles Lindbergh’s son was called the “Crime of the Century.”

During U.S. Prohibition, Canadian distillers and brewers made lots of money making “wet goods” smuggled to a thirsty U.S. market. So their owners were attractive targets for criminals.

him on Egremont Road near Camlachie. One of the four kidnappers took Labatt’s black REO sedan, drove it to London, and left it with a ransom note for Labatt’s brother, Hugh.

Other gunmen drove the blindfolded and terrified Labatt to Bracebridge, in the Muskoka District.

He was taken to a rented cabin and chained to a bed.

Hugh Labatt was ordered not to involve police, but they were contacted immediately.

The result was the largest police manhunt Ontario had ever seen. Premier Mitch Hepburn cancelled police holidays across the province and every available resource went into searching for the beer

The story of Labatt’s kidnapping was a national news story in newspapers

and radio broadcasts for three days.

Police suspected American perpetrators. The St.

continued and the newspaper, with an eye to readership, began covering hockey games.

Even during the St. Andrews years, though, Sarnia’s hockey scene was still a largely outdoor affair. Adult and youth teams competed at various venues including McFee’s Rink, at the corner of Cromwell and Victoria streets.

The primary organizations were the City League and the Church League (including SCITS).

Sarnia also competed most years in the Ontario Hockey League, with both an intermediate/senior team and a junior team.

Competition came from as near as Wyoming and as far away as Detroit and Toronto, with teams often travelling on special trains

with their devoted fans.

Not surprisingly, a terrific rivalry developed between Sarnia and London – “the enemy,” as news reports noted. The tradition continues today with the OHL’s Sarnia Sting and London Knights regularly waging what’s known as “The Battle of the 402.”

When big city teams came to town, the St. Andrews Rink would rock with up to 2,000 fans “jammed to the rafter.”

Athlete and sports journalism pioneer Lou March, in whose name a memorial trophy is awarded annually to Canada’s top athlete, often referred games there. And future NHL Hockey Hall of Famer Jack Adams played as a 21-year-old on the 1916 senior Sarnia Sailors.

Clair River waterfront and border crossings at Sarnia and Windsor were meticulously searched for possible hideouts, as were The Pinery and Kettle Point.

Brother Hugh Labatt was instructed to take a room at the Royal York Hotel in Toronto and await further instructions for delivering the $150,000 ransom ($2.5 million in today’s money).

Police and a small army of reporters followed Hugh Labatt to the Royal York hotel and camped out in the lobby.

When instructions finally came to deliver the money to the Humber River vicinity, and to come alone, Hugh Labatt asked the kidnappers how on earth he was to accomplish the request – reporters were following his every move.

Exasperated, the stymied kidnappers finally

released John Labatt in north Toronto, after making him promise to send them $25,000 after his release.

As if …

The failed Labatt kidnapping illustrated the problem facing every kidnapper – how to collect the ransom without getting caught.

The Labatt kidnappers were rounded up.

Three were sentenced to 15-years prison terms and the fourth killed in the U.S., but kidnapping as a Canadian crime first happened here in Sarnia.

Editor’s note: This is the second in a three-part series hen the Sarnia Curling Club built St. Andrews Rink in 1892 its winter activities were restricted to curling and public skating.

But two years later the club offered hockey enthusiasts ice time at the downtown facility, and it ushered in a new era of hockey history in the city.

Members of the Sarnia Hockey Club met at the Belchamber Hotel on Dec. 21, 1894 to accept the offer, bringing the sport indoors for the first time.

It was an exciting time.

A playing schedule was quickly developed and

soon special trains were arriving in town carrying hockey teams and fans from Petrolia, Chatham, Forest, London, Stratford and Ayr. A hockey game then — and well into the 1900s — consisted of two, 30-minute periods. A single referee oversaw the play of seven (later six) players per team: A goalie, a point, cover point, and four forwards.

Sarnia’s first organized indoor hockey game was played on Jan. 20, 1895, and it pitted Sarnia against Petrolia, or Petrolea, as it was then known.

The visitors won 3-2 and The Observer noted the “large number of spectators … indicative of the popularity of the game in town.”

For 42 years, teams with names like the Spauldings, the Exhibits, the Sailors, the Intermediates, the Silverwoods and the (no doubt feared) Bear Cats played at the St. Andrews.

The indoor rink closed on Dec. 23, 1936, the building became home to the Lambton Motors auto shop, and Sarnia’s hockey history moved on to its next phase.

Comment Judge not, that you may not be judged It’s too noisy, we’re outta here

Sir: In her response letter of Jan. 9, Jill Andrews stated that I, as an atheist, protested too much. No protest was intended.

It doesn’t matters to me if Christ actually existed or not. It is sufficient that his method was put forth as an outward manifestation of man’s innate morality, and a reminder to all that we have a better nature within if we would but use it.

The deification of Christ adds nothing to the truth of his narrative. I personally adhere to that narrative. One need not do anything more than follow that moral construct to be a better person.

I regard the Bible as one of the greatest books of literature ever written. It exposes us in all of our characteristics from evil to goodness,

love and compassion. It is up to each of us to choose which path to follow.

Ms. Andrews mentioned the straying of Charles Templeton from the marital bed. There are many more of ‘God’s Soldiers’ such as Jim Bakker, Ken Hovind, Jimmy Swaggart, Robert Tilton, Ted Haggard, believers all, who did the same thing.

What has that got to do with atheism?

Ms. Andrews stated, in so many words, that choosing virtue over the alternatives

Sir: Re: the Dec. 26 news story, London Road leads the hit parade.

The story reported that for the second year in a row the worst intersection for vehicle accidents in Sarnia was London Road at Murphy Road, and that collisions are most likely to happen around 4 p.m.

What’s the answer?

Perhaps drivers should stay off the road on Thursdays.

Or maybe the street preacher who uses that corner could help us out, holding up Elmer the Safety Elephant signs between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.

But seriously, Sarnia. We need to slow down, put down the phone and the coffee,

is a prideful thing to do, and that atheists are incapable of ‘handling the truth.’ A wonderful piece of hyperbole, to be sure.

To call myself a good person is arrogant presumption.

That is up to others to determine whether I am or not.

Therefore, to achieve any respect of others, I must live by example. Nothing more and nothing less will do.

But then, she has never met me, so I am at a loss as to how she came to judge me at all. Judge not that you may not be judged, as the saying goes. I read that somewhere.

I do not castigate her for believing in her deity. Please accord me the same courtesy and latitude.

The Northern Collegiate grad launched the business four years ago with the specific goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

To fund the venture, he cashed in his Tesla stock (bought at $30 and sold at $230 a share).

Electricut has one other employee. Like other lawn care companies it offers grass cutting and edging, yard cleanup, and hedge and tree trimming.

But the equipment, from trimmers to a

riding mower, all runs on batteries that, when not in use, draw charge from solar panels fixed atop the service trailer’s roof.

But cleaner, greener startup businesses are still uncommon in Sarnia and that needs to change, says Christopher Misch, who has launched two companies devoted to renewable energy design and electric car charging stations.

“Sarnia is really behind the times on this.

“A lot of municipalities installed charging stations ... eight years ago and they’re expanding them,” said Misch, CEO and founder of Green Dot Group and Chargequest Inc. “This isn’t a trend. This is real. This is happening.”

Misch is a member of the Sarnia-Lambton Workforce Development Board and one of the founders of the downtown The SarniaJournal co-working space, Collide.

opper thieves who vandalized the Sarnia Bay Marina last April are impacting Sarnia’s insurance rates.

Property insurance will cost $577,000 this year compared to $182,000 in 2019.

“The city incurred large property loss claims from the fire at the Sarnia Library and theft of copper at the bayside marina,” finance director Suzanna Dieleman noted in a staff report.

“This represents the overall increase in costs percentage of 217% over 2019 premiums.

Council approved a $1.63-million contract with Marsh Canada in December for general

insurance and risk management.

Despite raising the deductible, Sarnia is paying 21% more for all its insurance needs this year.

Damage to the marina docks and pavilion cost hundreds of thousands of dollars and took months to repair.

Police arrested three men and a woman at the scene, but other individuals broke in again shortly after and continued stripping wire.

Theft of copper and other metals from municipal facilities cost Sarnia at least $1 million last year, the city solicitor has estimated.

Dancing for Jays fans a whole new ballgame for city teen a two-minute sales pitch about the Jays.

Young, who doubted her chances, said she gained confidence after her speech went well.

“I felt like I could step up to the plate,” she said, giggling at the pun. “But I also saw there were a lot of talented girls there.”

The judges deliberated and five more were cut.

The finalist was shown and performed another dance combo, then went home to await word.

Because several J FORCE members are returning, 15 spots were open with about 20 girls remaining.

The Northern Collegiate grad learned a few days later there was more to the process. She was invited for another interview, one that required studying the team and its history.

In 2018, a year before leaving to pursue dance performance at Toronto’s George Brown College, Young joined the Lambton Lions basketball team’s ‘Triple Blue’ dance pack.

“So I had some idea what auditions would be like,” she said. “The Lambton Lions gave me some experience for this.”

Nevertheless, auditioning for the 19-member J FORCE was no cakewalk.

Shortly before Christmas, Young’s tryout application was approved.

At the Rogers Centre, she and about 50 others were shown a few dance combinations. After performing them, half were sent home.

adi Young has been to one Toronto Blue Jays game in her life, but that’s about to radically change.

As a new member of the baseball team’s J FORCE cheerleading squad she’ll attend every one the Jays 81 home games this season.

She will dance for the crowd, cheer from on top of the Jay’s dugout, do on-camera giveaways, and generally keep enthusiasm high in the stands.

“It’s just crazy. I’m very excited. It’s such a cool opportunity,” says the 19-year-old, who grew up in Point Edward and Sarnia.

The good news is that while this film by no means reinvents the genre, Lawrence and Smith exhibit a fantastic chemistry, one they figured out a long time ago and still readily accessible. Despite the occasional groaner of a joke, the film is surprisingly funny and has a pretty solid twist midway through.

Injecting life into a franchise that hasn’t seen action in 17 years is a tough task. This time around, we can thank directing duo Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah for taking over from Michael Bay and adding a human touch while retaining the explosions.

If you loved these bad boys two decades ago, you’ll love these still bad but slightly more refined men. My only suggestion — refresh yourself on the lyrics before going, because by the end you’ll want to sing along with their iconic song.

Foundry land deal reached

P

oint Edward and the owners of the former Holmes Foundry lands have reached an agreement to clean up the property, the village says.

The deal with Point Edward Gateway Inc. includes the removal of all vegetation and the demolition of two cement-block buildings that remain from the foundry Chrysler owned until 1988.

The company has also committed to moving forward with a Phase II Environmental Assessment and Risk Assessment, and is committed to maintaining the property once

it’s cleaned up, the village said.

“We have waited a long time to get to this point,” said Point Edward Mayor Bev Hand.

“And we are looking forward to working collaboratively with the current and potential future owners of this property to develop the property in a way that is beneficial to our community.”

Point Edward Gateway Inc. was formed in September of 2017 after its 17 shareholders were declared rightful owners of the 16-acre (6.5 hectare) property at Front Street and Highway 402.

Scam calls impact courthouse business

o many people were fooled by a recent telephone scam it tied up phone lines at the Lambton County Court House.

Sarnia Police took the unusual step last week of urging residents not to dial the callback number of 519-333-2950 if contacted by someone threatening arrest for unpaid taxes or other reasons.

“Unfortunately, these criminals seem to find more and more ways to make everyone’s life that much more difficult,” said Const. Giovanni Sottosanti, noting the courthouse was bombarded

with calls.

No agency in Canada will call to threaten you with arrest unless payment is made. And anyone asking for payment in Bitcoin or gift cards is assuredly a scam, Sottosanti said.

The callers are trying to get personal information, including SIN numbers, to make phony credit cards or other documents.

Provide no information and just hang up, he advised Police also ask those who get a scam call not to call police unless money or personal data is lost.

entral United Church has been sold.

Kenn Poore, a broker with Cushman & Wakefield, declined to identify the buyer or the terms, but said: “The congregation is happy with the purchaser and the purchaser’s intended use.”

The deal doesn’t close until November, giving church members time to celebrate the 188th anniversary of the congregation.

The downtown landmark at George and Brock streets and its 1.6 acres was listed for $369,000 last summer.

The current church, built in 1888 with additions in 1925 and 1950, has 20,000-square-foot

of space, two chapels, offices, a kitchen and gymnasium.

The National Trust for Canada estimates 9,000 churches and other religious spaces in Canada will be lost over the next decade due to shrinking congregations and rising maintenance costs.

ambton College is growing again.

The $7.3-million expansion includes a new reception area and campus shop at the college’s west entrance.

Also planned are two more labs, a classroom, student space, and barrier-free washrooms, confirmed communications director Cindy Buchanan.

The work is to begin this spring.

Accessibility on the footbridge linking the campus building and main parking lot will also be improved.

The project is just the latest in a campus-wide expansion and revital-

ization over the past five years worth more than $62 million.

Last May, Lambton unveiled a $30-million Nova Chemicals Health and Research Centre, a 60,000-square-foot addition for health sciences and applied research.

It connects to Lambton’s new 40,000-square-foot athletics complex and double gymnasium, with seating for 1,240.

Prior to that, a $14.2-million project created the Centre of Excellence in Energy & Bio-Industrial Technologies, located at college’s south end.

Finding Your Way Program

T

here are 60 percent of people living with dementia-related memory problems will become lost at some point.

For many people, getting lost happens without warning. Familiar surroundings may suddenly become strange to them.

They get disoriented and are unable to find their way home.

Becoming lost isn’t just distressing; it can be dangerous. Half the people with dementia who go missing for 24 hours end up seriously injured or dead.

Both the Sarnia Police Services and OPP in cooperation with the Alzheimer Society, include person living with dementia in their Vulnerable Persons Registry.

We gather important information that will help in the search for someone who goes missing. The police log this information, along with a recent photo, into their registry. Should a report come in that a person living with dementia is missing, the police can access the information and get it out quickly to aid in the search.

Dementia Friendly Communities What is a dementia friendly community?

A

Dementia Friendly Community is a place where people living with dementia are understood, respected and supported; an environment where people living with dementia will be confident that they can contribute to community life. In a Dementia Friendly Community, people will be aware of and understand dementia, and people living with dementia will be included and have choice and control over their dayto-day lives and level of

engagement.

Over 3,000 people locally are living with dementia and that number grows every year. The Alzheimer Society supports individuals to live well within our community.

Partners like the Norma and Alix Art Gallery have taken the initiative to train staff and volunteers to best support persons living with dementia.

Cold weather tips

Staying warm and safe outdoors

In the winter, getting outside and active can be fun for everyone. But going outdoors with someone with dementia requires great care. He won’t always dress appropriately for colder weather and slippery conditions. Perception problems may make it difficult for him to see ice on the sidewalk or he may believe snow to be a solid surface.

To manage outdoor risks: • Cover all exposed skin. Hats and scarves are particularly

important.

• Dress in bright colours and add reflective material to clothing.

• Encourage her to take smaller steps and slow down.

• Make sure she wears non-skid boots.

• Buy boots that use Velcro instead of laces to make it easier for her to dress herself.

Other issues

People with dementia may feel increased anxiety, confusion, and even sleepiness due to the

decreased sunlight in the winter months. To manage these issues: • Encourage some physical activity each day.

• Install special bulbs that simulate sunlight.

• Open curtains during daylight hours.

The risks when people with dementia go missing are particularly high in the cold winter months. It can also happen without warning.

He can get confused and disoriented even close to home. Contact the Alzheimer Society for specific programs to help keep him safe.

Normal aging vs dementia

Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias are not a part of normal aging.

lmost 40 per cent of people over the age of 65 experience some form of memory loss. When there is no underlying medical condition causing this memory loss, it is known as “age-associated memory impairment,” which is considered a part of the normal aging process.

Brain diseases like Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias are different.

Age-associated memory impairment and dementia can be told apart in a number of ways. Below are some examples.

y diagnosis was six years ago, and what you might find interesting about my reaction to hearing the news is that I was actually relieved. That might sound odd, but the fact is, for two years prior to my diagnosis, I knew something was wrong.I saw many doctors and was prescribed many types of medication. So, when I finally received the diagnosis of probable frontotemporal dementia, I was like, OK, now we know. And now I can fight this thing. As for the reactions of the people around me, it was basically shock. Predictably I suppose, they all said I was “too young” and that there must be a mistake.

They all told me to get another opinion. That’s one of the most misunderstood elements of dementia; the idea that it’s just “old people” who get it. The

disease is so misunderstood, even medical professionals sometimes don’t even know how to handle it. The first doctor that gave me the diagnosis certainly lacked compassion and was pretty matter-of-fact about it.

I have this disease.

There is no cure and it will continue to get worse. The average life expectancy is 6 to 8 years. I was told to go home and get my affairs in order.

And then the doctor said, “I need to take your driver’s license away immediately as you no longer have the necessary ability to drive.” I was never even tested to see if this was true! It simply should not have

happened this way, but I felt helpless and vulnerable. There was never a proper process in place.

Stigma is one of the biggest

hurdles we face and it comes in many forms. There are the non-believers who think I’m faking it. I can’t have dementia as I’m too young. They view me

as lazy. People also see you as if you are in end-stage. There is so much living to be done prior to the end, yet people put me in that end-stage.

Here’s how many steps you need to take a day Have you heard that you need to take 10,000 steps a day to remain healthy?

Unsurprisingly, there’s a little more to it than that.

WHY 10,000?

The idea that 10,000 steps a day is ideal has its origins in a 1960s marketing campaign for the “Manpo-kei,” a Japanese pedometer. Though scientists were involved in its invention, the number was chosen for no reason other than it was deemed representative of an active lifestyle.

IS THERE A MAGIC NUMBER? Scientists investigating the adage have

determined that the more steps one takes, the less likely they are to die. In fact, they found that people who took 7,500 steps a day had a lower mortality risk than those who wal­ked less.

However, there was no longevity benefit to taking more than 7,500 steps.

IF YOU DON’T LIKE WALKING If walking or jogging aren’t your thing, don’t worry. The important part is that you remain physically active. The World Health Organization re­commends conducting two-and-a-half hours a week of moderate activity or an hour

and 15 minutes a week of high intensity activity. Picking a type of exercise that you enjoy will make it easier to keep doing in the long term.

Those who have chronic health conditions, or who are over the age of 60, stand to gain hugely from regular exercise. It’s crucial for hindering mobility loss and also preserving overall physical and men­tal health.

However, to avoid

getting injured, they should be careful to work out within their capacity.

Cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome: what does it mean?

The legalization of cannabis has spurred enthusiasm for its potential therapeutic properties. However, healthcare professionals have reported an increased incidence of cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome (CHS), a condition specific to regular cannabis users that’s characterized by cyclic nausea and vomiting and abdominal pain. Here’s what you should know.

DIAGNOSIS As vomiting and abdominal pain are common complaints, a diagnosis of CHS can be difficult to establish. In addition, the disorder was first identified in 2004, meaning some medical professionals may not be aware of it and misdiagnose it as cyclic vomiting syndrome, a condition with similar symptoms. The only definitive diagnostic finding is improvement after quitting cannabis.

SYMPTOMS In the early stages of CHS, persistent morning nausea and abdominal pain may be the only symptoms. However, the more active phase of the condition is characterized by moderate to severe abdominal pain accompanied by persistent and potentially severe nausea and vomiting which can only be relieved by very hot baths or showers. Some patients experience symptoms of dehydration due to extreme vomiting. This is typically what prompts them to seek medical attention.

TREATMENT While intravenous fluid replacement, medication to reduce vomiting and painkillers may be provided to alleviate the symptoms of CHS, prolonged, persistent vomiting can lead to serious complications. The only known treatment for the syndrome is to stop using cannabis. After­ward, symptoms usually disappear within one or two days.

RISK FACTORS CHS is a rare condition and the main risk factor is chronic, heavy cannabis use, defined as 20 days a month for at least six months. It’s unclear why some users develop the syndrome while others don’t. While rare, CHS diagnoses are increasing.

If you or someone you know is experiencing symptoms such as persistent vomiting and abdominal pain, it’s important to seek medical attention.

Spotting spoiled food: beyond the best-by date Is it safe to eat? While best-by dates are useful indicators, your senses are a much better way to gauge freshness. Here’s how to determine whether food is safe to eat.

doesn’t extend below the skin, the potato is safe to eat once peeled. Make sure to remove eyes and sprouts and to throw out soft, mouldy potatoes.

• Dairy. Milk, yogurt, sour cream and other high-humidity dairy products should be chucked if they’ve separated, smell sour, have curdled or are showing even a hint of mould.

• Fruits and vegetables.

Some fruits and veggies, like carrots and bell peppers, are too dense for mould to penetrate past the surface, so these are safe to eat once the affected spot is removed. Slimy, discoloured and thoroughly mouldy fruits and veggies should be thrown out.

• Eggs. Conduct a water test to determine freshness. If the egg sinks, it’s good. If it floats, toss it.

• Cheese. Hard and semi-soft cheeses like Parmesan and cheddar are fairly resistant to mould. If there’s only a little bit on the surface, you can cut off one inch around the affected area and eat the rest. Mouldy soft cheeses should be discarded.

• Bread. Since mould spores can penetrate the porous surface of bread, a mouldy loaf should be thrown out.

• Meat and fish. Minor discolouration is nothing to worry about. However, a slimy texture or an unusual smell are indicators of spoilage. The same is true of fresh fish, which should never smell fishy. Deli meats with a slimy coating should also be discarded.

Remember, best-by dates are indicators of freshness, not safety. However, if in doubt, it’s always better to err on the side of caution.

Peacefully, with his daughter and sister by his side, Tom (Coz) (Two Toes) Causley passed away on Saturday, January 4, 2020, at Bluewater Health at the age of 68.

Treasured uncle of Alfredo (Brenda) Cipollone, Gina (Sean) Robbins, Liana (Zdravco) Kuzma, and great-uncle of Ashley, Katie, Jillian, Justin, Austin, and Mateja. Tom will be missed by his loyal companion Bella.

Tom will be remembered by Jason Shaw and by all his close friends. Predeceased by his parents Carl and Anna Causley.

Tom was retired as an engineer from CN Railroad. He also spent retirement years with Shelley Machine. Tom was an avid car fan, enjoying drag racing, classic cars, and Harley Davidson motorcycles. If you ever crossed paths with Tom and had a conversation, he regarded you as a lifetime friend.

Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Tom’s life will be held on Saturday, February 8, 2020 from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. at Theatre 42 located inside the Unifor Building, 900 Devine St, Sarnia. Sympathy may be expressed through donations to Canadian Cancer Society or Diabetes Canada (cheques only at the funeral home please).
