Councillor, MP clash over Christian beliefs

arnia-Lambton MP Marilyn Gladu says “offensive” comments a city councillor made about her on social media are a violation of Sarnia’s code of conduct.

Coun. Nathan Colquhoun said in a May Facebook post that Gladu “is an embarrassment to Sarnia and Christianity and is responsible for Sarnia-Lambton not being taken seriously at the federal level.”

Gladu called the comments “offensive” and “political suicide.” They also breach Section 12 of the city’s code because they attack her for her religion, she said.

“Obviously, I think this is not how a city councillor should conduct themselves,” she said.

“Any form of harassment and intimidation, especially with respect to creed — which is religion — is unacceptable.”

Gladu would not confirm or deny she has taken her complaint to Sarnia’s Integrity

Commissioner.

“Obviously, we are going to have differences on issues of policy, politics, that’s fine,” Gladu said.

“But there’s a professional, respectful way to do that, and I don’t feel that that was done.”

Coun. Colquhoun is a business owner and a co-founder and former pastor of the theStory, a church in downtown Sarnia.

He met with Gladu after she asked him to “cease and desist” in response to his Facebook post, where he had supported

NDP Candidate Adam Kilner.

Colquhoun said his comments about Gladu were based largely on an email exchange they had in 2016. At the time, he urged her to support the “boycott, divestment and sanctions” (BDS) campaign against Israel, a global movement spawned by Israeli treatment of Palestinians.

Colquhoun said he believes Gladu’s support for Israel is motivated by her Christian beliefs, and his recent meeting with her confirmed that.

arnia’s chief of police made good on a pledge last week when officers raided two smoke shops on the Aamjiwnaang First Nation and arrested five men for running illegal marijuana stores.

City officers working with the Provincial Joint Forces Cannabis Enforcement Team executed a warrant at the “Reefinery Dispensary” on July 30.

They seized dried cannabis, “honey oil,” hashish, vape pen refills, “shatter” and edibles from a St. Clair Parkway trailer with an estimated value of $143,000, as well as $3,195 in cash.

The very next day, officers crashed the Tashmoo Dispensary on Tashmoo Avenue and confiscated another $253,000 worth of cannabis products and about $18,000 in cash.

Five men, ranging in age from 22 to 29, were charged under the Cannabis Act with possessing cannabis for the purpose of sale.

Shortly before the busts, Police Chief Norm Hansen had said time was running out for black market pot dealers.

“My message to the public is, if you’re going to operate an illegal shop, don’t get comfortable,” he said.

At least four cannabis shops have been openly operating at Aamjiwnaang lately, but until last week only one had been raided by police.

History walking tours of downtown offer blast from past

f Marg Scott had her way Sarnia’s historical walking tour would be much longer.

That’s how much she loves hearing stories about the community’s past.

“I’d like them to talk about a few more things,” said the 86-year-old history buff as she took a recent tour.

Like what?

“There was the story about Popcorn Pete,” said Scott who grew up near downtown Sarnia and now lives in Point Edward.

“Popcorn Pete had a stand on the corner of Lochiel and Christina when I was growing up. He sold it for five cents a bag in the ‘40s. It was the really good stuff with butter. At the end of the day, he’d come over and give us kids his leftover popcorn free.”

Scott was one of nearly 100 people who joined the first historical tour of the summer hosted by the City of Sarnia.

“I think this is great,” Scott said. “Good job.”

Last year, four of the free tours were held and attendance increased each time.

The last tour of 2018 attracted 250 people and set the stage for this year’s success.

Summer student Emma Franklin said she isn’t from Sarnia but is a quick study.

She’s working with the city’s heritage committee to expand on last year’s tour information and change up the route a bit.

The tour starts at City Hall and heads south on Christina. Stops include Lochiel Street, where the first town hall and jail stood, the Downtown Market near Cromwell, where Const. Jack Lewis lost his life taking down gangster Red Ryan during a robbery in 1936.

of retail cannabis licences, which he believes is fuelling the growth of illegal stores.

The Ford government awarded the first 50 retail cannabis licenses through a lottery earlier this year.

None of the recipients are based in Lambton County.

Hansen believes organized crime is behind many of the unlicensed dispensaries.

“Every person that pulls into one of these shops and buys a joint is supporting organized crime.”

Hansen said Aamjiwnaang band council is fully supportive of police taking action against illegal shops operating on First Nation territory.

Aamjiwnaang Chief Chris Plain did not respond to requests for comment.

The province has said a second lottery will be held for another 42 retail cannabis licences, as well as eight additional licenses for stores on First Nations on a first-come, firstserved basis.

The case of the stolen pooch has a tail-wagging ending in case they spotted the dog on their routes.

“It was very touching, absolutely amazing how the community came together,” said Campbell.

On the morning of July 29 city police posted a photo of the man suspected of taking Embsay.

Around 6 p.m. numerous calls came, said Const.

Giovanni Sottosanti.

“People reported seeing the dog in the Lambton Mall Road area and police were dispatched,” he said. “If it wasn’t for the public’s help, she may not have been returned so quickly and safely.”

Officers found Embsay being led on a rope by a 49-year-old man in an alleyway behind the Lambton Mall Road plaza. She’d been missing two days.

Sarnia family is grateful to police and residents for the safe return of their dog, which was taken while tied up outside a downtown eatery.

“You hear so many bad stories, but this time it was wonderful how the community came together,” says Amy Campbell, sister of the dog’s owner.

“We are very thankful.”

Embsay is a two-yearold blonde German shepherd-husky mix. Matt McKay, 31, was caring for her while his parents were on vacation and took the dog for a walk on July 27.

“I tied her up outside Your Place (Eatery & Bar) and went inside to place my order,” McKay said. “I was inside maybe 15 or 20 minutes and when I came out, the dog and her leash were gone.

“I thought, you’ve got

He immediately called Sarnia police to report the missing pooch and called Campbell to see if she had photos.

“I’ve taken care of Embsay many times and she is such a healthy, happy dog. She wouldn’t hurt a soul,” McKay said. “She’s very friendly and that’s what got her into trouble I think.”

Police reviewed surveillance video from across the street that showed a shirtless man on a bicycle take Embsay as she was waiting outside the restaurant.

Campbell posted photos of Embsay on social media, including the Sarnia Lambton Lost & Found Pets Facebook page.

The response was overwhelming, she said.

Embsay was named for a village in Yorkshire, England where McKay's grandfather lived during the Second World War.

hen Kaylen Burgess set out to launch a new fundraiser for the summer students at Big Brothers Big Sisters of Sarnia-Lambton, she hoped five or six businesses might get on board.

“The feedback and support has been incredible — everyone loved the idea and really just jumped on it,” she said, pointing to 18 businesses already signed up for the ultimate lemonade standoff, taking place Aug. 21.

The Crown has decided not to proceed with charges involving a Sarnia pediatrician.

Dr. Kunwar Singh was arrested last December and charged with one count of indecent assault on a female.

Police said the charge arose from a patient assess-

ment done at Singh’s office in 1982 when the complainant was 15 years of age.

Singh was charged several weeks after a woman, then 51, began demonstrating in front of his Sarnia office.

The case was adjourned at the Sarnia courthouse numerous times before the

charges were stayed.

The Sarnia Observer reported on July 30 that Assistant Crown attorney Bianca DiBiase had told the court it was “not in the public interest to proceed with the charges at this time.”

CFL without Sarnia like turkeyless Christmas – not right

M

y sister MaryJane describes her husband, Sweet Pete, as “the perfect man.”

In other words, one with no interest in sports.

My Dad was like that too. I can’t recall him ever watching sports of any kind on TV. I used to tell people that if my father had ever shown up at one of my hockey games I would have assumed someone died.

My mother was from Hamilton. She used to like watching, and cheering on, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats when they played in the Grey Cup. My nine brothers and sisters all cheered with her for “The Tabbies.”

I loved football.

I went to school in an era in which St. Patrick’s, Northern, Central, SCITS and St. Clair annually battled for high school

supremacy. It was a time when the Waring Brothers, Dick and Brian, led the local Fighting Irish.

Red Feather nights in the fall would pack the old grandstand at Norm Perry Park.

I follow the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, and on Sundays the National Football League keeps me entertained with its 32 teams south of the border.

But I have no interest in the Canadian Football League, which, I believe, deserted true Canadian football back in the mid1950s when the CFL was officially established.

First, the CFL made the disastrous decision to drop the Ontario Rugby Football Union (ORFU) from Grey

Cup competition. This eliminated teams like the Sarnia Imperials, the Kitchener-Waterloo Dutchmen and the London Lords from competing for Canadian football supremacy.

Instead, CFL leadership decided to make Canadian football a “bigcity” game. They changed it to bring it closer to the brand of football played in the NFL. The CFL even dreamed of a North American championship game played annually between the CFL and NFL champs.

The CFL’s decision to go “big city” almost crushed Sarnia’s illustrious football spirit and was a slap to the city’s two Grey Cup victories.

I stopped watching when the CFL made its disastrous foray into U.S. expansion in the 1990s, and gradually became a home for NFL castoff

players. Today, less than half of CFL players are Canadians.

But think for a moment how different it might have been.

Means test needed to ensure senior funding spent wisely

here has been a lot of discussion of late regarding the United Way, and our seniors’ funding.

I am proud to say that our funding for seniors’ services has increased over the past nine years; however, it isn’t the increase that has received ongoing discussion, but a cut to one agency.

Let me assure you the United Way does not make any funding cuts lightly. In fact, the funding process takes over 10 months, and involves three different sets of volunteers from our community.

One of the values of the

Dave Brown United Way is that those people who are most in need for service get it, regardless of ability to pay. A means test is an effective way of determining that.

A means test is a process that identifies income levels and can determine if an individual would qualify for a subsi-

dy or not, based on their ability to pay – not their total assets.

Meals on Wheels, Footcare, Transportation, even Counselling services all use means tests to help identify which individuals can’t afford the true cost of the services.

There is no doubt the Lambton Seniors Association staff and volunteers do a good job in our community. What is in doubt is whether those people who need the services most and cannot afford it, are getting the service.

Lambton Elderly Outreach and Habitat for Humanity both do similar home handyman services in our community, and both use a means

Lambton. In fact, the need for Meals on Wheels in Rural Lambton is up 36% so far this year.

United Way also increased funding to both the Red Cross, (in Sarnia) and LEO (in rural Lambton) for transportation services, enabling seniors who are unable to drive to get to medical appointments, grocery stores and even food banks.

Over 90% of those who get LEO Transportation services say they couldn’t live in their own homes if it wasn’t for the Transportation services.

Currently, LEO and Red Cross each receive $58,000 for transportation services alone.

Additional seniors services funded by the

United Way include Friendly Visiting, Charitable Nursing, Homeward Bound, Stroke Recovery, CNIB, and Telcheck.

Needed renovations take centre stage at Imperial Theatre

heatre Sarnia is counting on raising more than the curtain this year.

The community theatre group needs to raise about $250,000 to cover the remaining costs for the first phase of renovations at the Imperial Theatre, as well as an unexpected heating-cooling unit breakdown.

Memorial service to honour beloved Sarnian Allen Wells TARA JEFFREY THE JOURNAL

A

llen Wells was not one to shy away from anything.

“He was an advisor, a confidant, an emergency resource for just about anyone who would ask,” son Paul Wells said of his late father — a longtime CAER administrator and staunch advocate for improved safety and emergency management in Sarnia’s Chemical Valley.

“Even after he retired, he kept an eye on things, and he was not shy about letting people know when he didn’t think (CAER) was fulfilling its mandate, to keep people informed.

“That’s a guy who looks

out for his community.”

Wells, who passed away in May at age 88, is being remembered and celebrated at a memorial service at the Sarnia Riding Club on Saturday, Aug. 17, from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Friends and associates are invited to gather and pay their respects, with remarks from family and community members at 1:30 p.m.

ALT Walk offering arts community an affordable venue

ll systems are go for Sarnia’s first ever ALT Walk.

The city’s newest arts festival will see Christina Street closed between Lochiel and Wellington on Aug. 17 to create space for at least 69 artists, vendors and musicians, said organizer Eric Watt.

“It's all coming together really well,” said the city artist and illustrator, who added buskers are welcome that day.

“They just have to come to the info booth and I’ll place them somewhere.”

ALT Walk follows in the footsteps of Artwalk, the now defunct weekend arts festival.

Though the intention was never to replace Artwalk, ALT Walk is “an effort to do what Artwalk was originally supposed to do,” Watt said.

“I was unimpressed with the direction Artwalk was taking the last few years and the decline in artist booths and wanted to tap into Artwalk’s original identity and goal, which was to

strengthen the art community.”

ALT Walk is run through a non-profit and designed with affordability in mind, Watt said. A 10-foot by 10-foot plot - which artists can furnish with a table, easel or blanket - costs $65, a rate that’s based on the number of registrants. As numbers grow, the price goes down.

A booth at Artwalk cost $350 its final year, a fee prohibitively expensive for many working artists, he added.

The five-member organizing committee hopes to add a second day to the festival in the

future, as well as a workshop component.

Artwalk folded last year after a “one-year hiatus” became permanent due to a lack of volunteers and a shrinking board of directors, organizers said.

City councillor Nathan Colquhoun became Artwalk president in 2016 after four members of the executive board resigned. He and two others filled the open positions but they and the remaining board said they couldn’t make the time commitment required to sustain the festival long-term.

MOH asking researchers to revisit cancer hotspot study

ambton’s medical officer of health has asked researchers at McGill University to revisit a recent study that depicted Sarnia as a hotspot for leukemia due to benzene exposure.

The study led by Dr. Ivan Litvinov and published in the medical journal Cancer identified

But Ranade said the study was poorly conducted because researchers failed to take into account Sarnia’s older population – a known risk factor for AML and other cancers.

February, Sarnia’s AML rate between 1992 and 2010 was “significantly higher,” including neighbourhoods in the city’s north end and Point Edward that were more than three times above the national average.

It also points to benzene exposure as a major risk factor for AML; according to a 2017 collaborative national news investigation, it’s estimated Sarnia’s refineries release three to ten times the annual benzene limit imposed by the province in 2016.

grassroots activists and is interested only in obtaining the truth through fact-based science.

He was also critical of the research team for not collaborating with local officials and doctors.

“It’s quite something for someone based somewhere else who’s analyzing data without a sense of the community… without any regard to the context,” he said.

ndigenous patients at Bluewater Health can now voluntarily self-identify when registering.

The self-identification will be saved in the patient’s record, allowing the hospital to provide extra support through the Indigenous Patient Navigator.

Everyone registering for patient care at hospital will be asked if they would like to self-identify as First Nations,

Métis or Inuit.

The “yes” or “no” responses will be saved and the patient won’t be asked when registering in the future, the hospital said.

Proof of status is not required.

Patients that don’t respond will be asked again on the next visit.

“The information collected will be used for the sole purpose of providing the best possible care to patients,” said Indigenous patient navigator Nikki George.

Surprise: Fast and Furious spinoff actually pretty good

E

ight movies into the franchise, the Fast and Furious films have basically become an excuse to watch incredible car chases and explosions strung together with a fairly ridiculous plot.

Hobbs and Shaw, the first of what I can only imagine will be a brand new series of films, takes the best parts of the Fast and Furious and leaves the insane plot behind.

This time around, Dwayne “the rock” Johnson and Jason Statham (previously established as Diplomatic Security Service agent Luke Hobbs and British Special Forces agent Deckard Shaw) are forced to work together to track a rogue MI-6 agent named Hattie (played by The Crown’s Vanessa Kirby).

Hattie has allegedly killed her entire team and absconded with a deadly virus that is programmable to a specific DNA sequence and, as result, can wipe out one person – or the entire world in a single instant.

But it’s a task that’s easier said

Journal Review than done, because a human science experiment created by an evil biotech company that believes in killing the weak with plague so it can help the strong survivors ‘evolve’ with robot assistance, is also after the virus and the agent.

The science experiment? He happens to be Brixton Lore (Idris Elba) a former rogue MI-6 agent that was believed to have been dead. Turns out, he’s alive, bulletproof, unstoppably strong, and prefers to be called Black Superman these days.

OK, maybe the spinoff hasn’t completely shed the ridiculous plot.

But this spinoff has what the original franchise never did – lead actors who can act.

Dwayne Johnson’s impossible-to-resist charm is back in

full force and beautifully opposed by Jason Statham’s sardonic wit. The pair makes an enticing team.

Vanessa Kirby is given an incredible gift in Hattie – a female foil who is smart and strong and completely capable of taking on two overpowering men with her wits and fists. Hers is not the usual damsel in distress/secret seductress act many action movies foist upon their female roles, and she doesn’t waste it, more than holding her own against two big and better-known lead actors.

Point Edward seeking ‘no wake’ zone

R

ising water levels have prompted Point Edward to ask federal officials to create a “no wake” zone in the St. Clair River.

The wakes of passing vessels is endangering workers and swimmers and creating erosion on the shoreline, said

CAO Jim Burns.

The village has asked the Canadian Coast Guard and Transport Canada to review the current shoreline speed limit of 10 knots when vessels are within 30 metres of shore.

Point Edward would like to see the regulations amended so the entire width of its shore

is classified as a no wake zone. Additional signage and buoy are also requested, as well as increased enforcement of speed limits.

Record high water levels in the river are submerging groynes and breakwalls, creating an additional hazard for boaters.

SLEP accepting applications for business grants

T

he Sarnia-Lambton Economic Partnership is now offering grants of up to $5,000 to small business owners and entrepreneurs to grow an existing business or start a new one.

Six grants totaling $30,000 are available, and the money is combined with person-

alized business coaching, mentorship and community support.

Applicants must be over 18, not currently enrolled in a post-secondary institution, and have at least 25% of the requested grant amount in equity.

Enbridge plans new pipeline in St. Clair

nbridge Gas is planning a new pipeline and expansion at the company’s Corunna compressor station to meet growing demand for natural gas.

The company has told Lambton County it intends to submit an application to the Ontario Energy Board later this summer and begin construction next summer.

The proposal calls for a 1.2-kilometre natural gas pipeline to be built west of Highway 40 and south of LaSalle Line,

and run parallel to two existing pipelines.

Enbridge also intended to remove aboveground piping at the compressor station on Tecumseh Road and replace it with below-ground piping.

That work is scheduled to start in October and be completed in late 2021.

Enbridge Gas merged with Union Gas earlier this year to become Enbridge Gas Inc., creating one of North America’s largest utilities.

ambton College’s fledgling baseball team has added to former Sarnia Braves to its lineup.

Sarnians Jake Taylor and Eric Steeves will suit up for the Lions’ inaugural Ontario College Athletics Association season this fall.

Taylor will be the Lions’ first catcher. The 5’8” infielder was a key part of Great Lakes Secondary School’s OFSAA gold medal in 2018, said Lambton coach James Grant.

“We have seen him play a lot of baseball as he worked his way through the Sarnia Braves system and he has progressed into a top tier catcher. We are looking forward to seeing him do some great things for us.”

The Courtright native is returning home after a season with the U18 Windsor Selects.

Pitcher Eric Steeves is currently leading the Braves in wins. He cut his teeth in collegiate play with Wilfrid Laurier University and contributed to the team’s Ontario University Athletics championship campaign last year.

“Eric is a strong addition to our pitching staff,” said Grant. “He has shown us this summer that he is able to get outs against some of the best AAA senior competition in the province.”

Steeves also pitched for the Kitchener Panthers of the Intercounty Baseball League in 2018.

The new Lambton Lions team, which has a current roster of about 20, will begin play in a league that includes teams from Fanshawe, St. Clair, Humber, Seneca, George Brown and Durham colleges over a 20-game season starting in September.

Santavy wins Pan Am silver

A Sarnia weightlifter won a medal at the Pan Am Games last week.

Boady Santavy took silver in the men’s 96kg division at the games in Lima, Peru.

The 22-year-old was successful in his first five attempts but finished behind Columbian Jhonatan Rivas Mosquera after coming up short on his lift at 215 kilograms.

Before that he was an outstanding junior lifter, setting every Canadian junior and senior record at the 94-kilo weight class, as well as all the Commonwealth junior records.

His father and coach, Dalas Santavy, has said the goal is for Santavy to compete and contend for a medal at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, Japan.

Stock car team heads to big race firing on all cylinders

Sarnia driver with one of the smallest racing teams and tightest budgets has qualified for the big one — the Canadian Short Track Nationals.

Jaden Chapman will line up against 35 other racers at the Jukasa Motor Speedway on Labour Day weekend, after winning a qualifier at Delaware Speedway in June.

It’s something of a David and Goliath story for the licensed mechanic who will compete for a $75,000 purse at the 250-lap event.

The Short Track Nationals draws teams from across Canada and the U.S. Even four prospects from NASCAR team owner Kyle Busch’s development camp are racing the oval in Cayuga, Ont. “It’s essentially Canada’s version of the Daytona 500,” said Chapman, 25.

The SCITS grad isn’t banking on a big payday. In fact, he jokes, the way to make a million dollars at racing is to start out with four million.

“We say any night the car comes home in the trailer in one piece is a good night,” he said.

Chapman races in the prolight division. His car, based on a late-model Chevrolet Impala, is completely custom and powered by the same 450 horsepower engine as the division’s other cars.

The vehicle is worth about $30,000, a fraction of some competitor cars, which can run at more than $100,000.

His racing team is comprised of Chapman, wife Jessica, his father and a handful of close friends. About seven members normally attend a race, each with specific duties.

New addition David Larocque recently moved to Sarnia from Windsor.

“I’m hoping to know everything on this car for next season,” said Larocque, an apprentice mechanic. “I grew up around race cars my whole life.”

Jessica Chapman has been hitting the track with her husband since 2011. It was a strange new culture then but she now considers it a second home.

“We got married last year,

and the next weekend we were racing,” she said with a smile.

“It has really become another piece of me.”

She manages the crew on race days, prioritizing the maintenance and repairs so their driver can focus on driving.

2012 he hit a wall at top speed after a competitor’s damaged transmission left an oil slick in his path. He remembers waking up in hospital, he said.

But he was back on the track the following weekend.
