Foundation says Bad Bunny concerts will leave over $200 million economic impact

The Foundation for Puerto Rico has issued a study that found that the highly anticipated musical residency of Bad Bunny, which will take place from July 11 to Sept. 14 in San Juan, will leave a $215 million economic impact.

The Foundation says about $170 million of the revenue will flow into San Juan alone. The residency is also expected to create more than 2,000 temporary jobs. So far there are more than 30,000 reserved nights at hotels.

The concerts have triggered an increase of more than 140% in searches for accommodations on the Airbnb platform for those dates, compared to the same period in 2024.

The destinations with the greatest growth in searches include Vega Baja, Guaynabo, San Sebastián, Cayey, Manatí and Mayagüez, reflecting a shift in tourism beyond the capital, Airbnb noted in a press release.

The trend also reflects a strong connection with the Puerto Rican diaspora. The U.S. cities with the most searches for Puerto Rico are New York, Orlando and Chicago, all with significant Puerto Rican communities.

Internationally, the countries most interested in visiting Puerto Rico during the residency are the United States, Puerto Rico, Spain, Mexico, Canada, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Chile, France and Ecuador.

According to Airbnb, the cultural events allow more communities to benefit from tourism outside of traditional destinations. In fact, nearly 50% of hosts in Puerto Rico are using the platform to generate income amid rising costs of living. In 2023, guests staying through Airbnb generated $1.4

billion in economic impact, supported more than 25,000 jobs, and generated more than $815 million in wages, not including direct income for hosts.

Platforms such as Airbnb also promote authentic experiences, with nearly 90% of hosts on the island recommending local restaurants and cafes, more than 50% suggesting shops or boutiques, and 60% encouraging visits to areas less known to tourists.

The platform reiterated its support for a uniform regulatory framework for short-term rentals across the island and its willingness to collaborate with the Puerto Rico Tourism Company to establish clear rules for hosts, guests and authorities.

Some $170 million in revenue out of an estimated $215 million economic impact from Bad Bunny’s musical residency will flow into San Juan alone, a recent study says.

Popular Democratic Party (PDP) Secretary General Manuel Calderón Cerame told the press earlier this week that as part of the PDP’s preparations for the celebration of the Commonwealth Constitution in Mayagüez, the party’s refoundation is returning to the streets to listen and called on everyone to celebrate the island Constitution together.

“A few weeks ago we celebrated the Western Tour very successfully, where we shared with thousands of ‘populares’ and held eight meetings in four days,” Calderón Cerame said in a written statement. “Now on the Road to Mayagüez Tour, we will hold six meetings in four days throughout Puerto Rico, demonstrating organization, structure and that in the Refoundation, the Popular Democratic Party is supersonic.”

The Commonwealth Constitution is a document signed

by both of Puerto Rico’s first two elected governors, Luis Muñoz Marín and Luis A. Ferré. There were 92 citizens from three different political parties who put their work and intellect at the service of all Puerto Ricans, the PDP secretary general noted.

“The PDP, as well as all Puerto Ricans, on July 25 of each year, celebrate our rights, our democracy and our own government,” Calderón Cerame added.

The announced itinerary begins this Saturday, from 3 to 4:30 p.m. at PDP Committee headquarters in Puerta de Tierra, for residents of San Juan, Guaynabo, Aguas Buenas, Bayamón, Toa Alta, Toa Baja, Trujillo Alto, Cataño and Carolina. On Friday, July 18, it moves on to Ponce from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at PDP Committee headquarters in the southern coastal city, for residents of Ponce, Guayanilla, Peñuelas, Jayuya, Adjuntas, Juana Díaz and Villalba.

Judge reduces bail for man who killed son-in-law

Judge Robert Osoria of the Arecibo Judicial Center decided to reduce the bail previously set for Miguel Ángel González Varela, who is accused of killing 21-year-old Wisler Jared Rancel Galarza, González Varela’s sonin-law, reportedly in defense of his daughter, who had been beaten by Rancel Galarza hours earlier.

The total bail was lowered from $200,000 to $60,000, allowing the former Arecibo municipal employee to be released on bail. The case has generated a significant amount of public support for González Varela.

Judge Osoria granted bail with the condition that González Varela must wear an electronic bracelet and remain at his sister Sonia Ivette González Varela’s home at all times, except for authorized outings.

González Varela’s attorney, Pedro Jusino, expressed satisfaction with the judge’s decision. Meanwhile, the prosecutor in the case, Rafael Freytes, stated that since the defendant

surrendered to authorities, there should be no concerns regarding his appearance in court.

The 60-year-old was charged with first-degree murder and discharging or pointing a firearm at his son-in-law. He was jailed after failing to post the $200,000 bail set by Judge Rafael I. Lugo Morales of the Bayamón Court of First Instance.

The incident occurred July 5, at 1:52 a.m., in front of apartment 325 of the Manuel Zeno Gandía residential complex in Arecibo. The injured man was taken to the Puerto Rico Medical Center in Río Piedras, where Dr. Nidia D. Soto confirmed his death at approximately 5:25 a.m.

The shooting took place after Rancel Galarza attacked González Varela’s daughter, who suffered a head injury while trying to break away from her attacker. The victim’s sister, who intervened, was also attacked.

According to the investigation conducted by authorities, the defendant was charged with violations of Article 93(a) of the Puerto Rico Penal Code for first-degree murder and

Article 6.14 of the Weapons Act for pointing and firing a firearm.

According to an interview, the defendant’s daughter stated that she had been a victim of physical abuse by Rancel Galarza on previous occasions; she had not filed a complaint.

Hours after the shooting, González Varela voluntarily surrendered at the Arecibo Police Station and, according to police reports, stated that he acted in defense of his daughter. He stated outright that he committed the act “for his daughter and that he would do it again,” the reports said.

However, a relative of the young man told television media that Rancel Galarza was preparing to surrender to authorities after beating his partner. The woman claimed that the young man was killed as he tried to get into a vehicle, after having expressed his intention to surrender.

The total bail originally ordered against Miguel Ángel González Varela was lowered from $200,000 to $60,000.

The investigation into the case is being led by Prosecutor Rafael Freytes Cutrera, while the Justice Department has reiterated its call for victims of violence to seek legal channels and not take justice into their own hands.

Rejection of Genera amendment is setback to New Fortress Energy

Attorney Rolando Emmanuelli characterized the Puerto Rico Energy Bureau’s (PREB) rejection of the renegotiation of Genera PR’s contract as a significant setback for the power plant operator’s parent company New Fortress Energy, which is enduring a critical financial state.

“This is a hard blow to New Fortress because the $110 million would have helped them maintain credibility in the market. It is likely that New Fortress’ financial troubles will worsen, and they could file for bankruptcy at some point,” Emmanuelli said in a radio interview. “If New Fortress files for bankruptcy, that would terminate the contract because they could not sustain operations without a guarantor to support Genera in the event of financial difficulties. This could result in Genera having to exit the country [Puerto Rico].”

Genera PR, the private operator of the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority’s (PREPA) legacy power plants, is a subsidiary of New Fortress, which serves as guarantor of the contract.

On Monday, the PREB ordered a refund of $40 million charged to consumers for fuel purchase adjustments, concluding that it does not have a formal amendment to the contract between PREPA, Genera PR, and the Public-Private Partnerships Authority under consideration.

“The Energy Bureau determined that the $40 million already charged to consum-

ers through the fuel purchase adjustment must be refunded,” the regulatory body stated in its resolution.

A proposal for contract amendments had been submitted on Feb. 27 and subsequently amended on April 7, but it was not finalized or accepted by all parties, particularly Genera PR. Consequently, the PREB concluded that the lack of a complete and final submission prevents its evaluation.

Additionally, a previous directive allowing LUMA Energy, the electric power transmission and distribution system operator, to recover an extra $30 million during the current quarter was rescinded after Genera PR failed to accept several key required provisions, including a performance bond.

As part of the remedy, LUMA must immediately adjust current quarter bills to reflect the refund to consumers. Only $6 million was approved to be withheld, identified as an eligible fuel savings incentive during the 2024 contract year.

“There is supposed to be an immediate discount on the rate so that this money can be recovered,” Emmanuelli said. “The

rate in effect at the time the discount is applied will be reduced proportionally for all consumers, allowing the $40 million to be reimbursed to the people of Puerto Rico.”

Emmanuelli, a legal expert on the Puerto Rico Oversight, Management and Economic Stability Act, commonly known as PROMESA, emphasized that the return of millions of dollars indicates a precarious situation for the power generation contractor.

“Given the circumstances, Genera’s situation is very unstable. Genera has not met any of the conditions of the contract. It has failed to execute on what it promised, which was to decommission the plants and transition us to renewable energy as quickly as possible. Instead, it has done the opposite,” he noted. “Not only has it failed to comply, but it also faces a deeper issue: its parent company. If its parent company goes bankrupt, Genera would have to leave the country because there would be no way to sustain its generation operations. The people of Puerto Rico cannot risk having a company that lacks sufficient financial support.”

Puerto Rico Tourism Company (PRTC) Executive

Director Willianette Robles Cancel and Caguas

Mayor William Miranda Torres made official on Tuesday the creation of two new gastronomic zones in the Criolla City’s traditional urban center and in the Bairoa neighborhood.

“At the Puerto Rico Tourism Company we work with the commitment to increase the capacities for the tourism offer and maximize economic activity in all regions of the island, and the gastronomic sector is a key piece to boost the tourism industry in each region,” Robles Cancel said. “For this reason, we are pleased to start the development of these two new gastronomic routes in Caguas, which we are certain will have a positive impact on tourism and that are projected to inject approximately $58,000 per month into the Criolla City and the entire surrounding region.”

Tuesday’s declarations were part of the promotional

launch of the Criolla Trail’s initial phase.

The Caguas mayor added that the Criolla Trail “reaffirms Caguas as the center and heart of Puerto Rican gastronomy.”

“More than a culinary experience, this trail celebrates what we are: a vibrant, diverse, and profoundly Criolla city. Every dish served at our more than 130 restaurants along the route tells stories of tradition, innovation, and Caguas pride,” Miranda Torres said. “We are committed to local talent, tourism, and an economy that is born from what defines us as a people.”

The gastronomic tourism market is regarded as one of the most valuable elements for the growth of the tourism industry, targeting domestic tourism, which also strengthens the destination’s offering to tourists from abroad.

Two gastronomic zones created in Caguas Barranquitas officially opens Placita del Mercado

Barranquitas Mayor Elliot Colón Blanco announced Tuesday the official opening of the central mountain town’s new Market Square (Placita del Mercado), an emblematic project developed through a collaborative agreement between the island Department of Agriculture and the Municipality of Barranquitas.

The initiative seeks to promote the local economy, support farmers and offer fresh and quality products to

residents and visitors.

“In addition, it is a space for socializing and commerce for the entire community,” the mayor said.

Located in the heart of the urban center, at 68 Barceló Street, on the corner of Ubaldino Font Street, the Market Square will feature a grocery area offering meats, vegetables, eggs and miscellaneous items, all sourced from local farmers.

In addition, coffee and artisanal beverage stations will highlight the best produce from Barranquitas and the region.

PREPA’s stakeholders only spent 45 hours in mediation

Aresolution of the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority’s (PREPA) $9 billion bankruptcy is moving slowly.

The lead mediator, retired judge Shelley Chapman, certified in a motion this week that during June she and another colleague, Jamie Eisen, devoted only 45 hours to mediation.

On April 8, 2022, the federal Title III Court overseeing the bankruptcy case entered two orders initiating mediation in the case, one to appoint a mediation team, and the other to establish the terms and conditions of the proposed mediation, which was intended to facilitate confidential settlement negotiations of all issues and proceedings arising in PREPA’s Title III case.

U.S. District Judge Laura Taylor Swain, who is overseeing PREPA’s bankruptcy case, scheduled oral arguments for July 23 on the PREPA bondholders’ pursuit of a $3.7 billion administrative expense claim.

The claim arises from PREPA’s alleged failure to pay bondholders net revenues since the bankruptcy proceedings began in 2017. The Financial Oversight and Management Board, which represents PREPA, has argued that the money was spent maintaining PREPA’s electrical system, and therefore wasn’t net revenue.

Swain gave the parties up to 90 minutes for oral arguments.

The bondholders’ assert that their claim does not impact PREPA’s assets, that uninsured disaster repair costs should have been funded by PREPA’s self-insurance fund, and that PREPA’s post-petition collateral use equates to the extension of post-petition credit.

They also claim that they plan to use monthly operating reports to show that PREPA earned $3.7 billion in net revenue over the almost eight-year bankruptcy. They say PREPA should not exit bankruptcy without paying them the claim in full or negotiating an agreement, but the oversight board said PREPA did not make sufficient revenues, and that bondholders must be paid with future net revenues.

Grief and weariness set in on 5th grueling day since Texas floods

Search teams from across the United States and Mexico streamed into central Texas to relieve exhausted local rescuers Tuesday. But the slim hopes of finding survivors continued to fade on the fifth day after the devastating floods that swept through the area.

The death toll has continued to rise every few hours, reaching at least 109 by midday, while officials in hard-hit Kerr County acknowledged that no one there had been found alive since Friday.

Expressions of grief and dread grew more intense, as did demands for investigations and accountability. Families still waiting for news of missing relatives “were feeling like they were in darkness,” Archbishop Gustavo García-Siller of San Antonio recounted at a vigil, speaking of his visit to a reunification center.

The youth of many of the victims added to the overwhelming sense of loss. The floods are among the deadliest disasters for children in the United States in recent decades, with at least 30 killed in Kerr County. The victims include many

from Camp Mystic, a Christian summer camp for girls, where 27 campers and staff members were killed. Five girls and a 19-year-old counselor remained missing.

Here’s what else to know:

— Search efforts: Search efforts involving hundreds of people have been challenged by more storms and other problems. A search helicopter collided with a private drone Monday, forcing an emergency landing. Crews have been getting reinforcements from across the country, including Missouri, Florida and California. Mexican K-9 search teams have also joined the response, according to a post from Ronald Johnson, the U.S. ambassador to Mexico.

— The victims: At least 87 of those killed in the floods were in Kerr County. The other 22 were from nearby counties: seven in Travis County, seven in Kendall County, five in Burnet County, two in Williamson County and one in Tom Green County.

— Cruz criticized: Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, is facing criticism for being on vacation in Greece with his family when the deadly floods struck and not returning for the first 72 hours of the disaster. His office said he returned as quickly as possible.

Donations of bottled water, instant ramen and other humanitarian aid for flooding victims are collected in Kerrville, Texas, on Sunday, July 6, 2025. Officials in Texas have appealed for aid after flash flooding killed at least 100 people over the weekend in one of the deadliest floods in the United States in decades. Veterans Affairs Department scales back plans for vast job cuts

The Department of Veterans Affairs has scaled back its effort to reduce its workforce by more than 80,000 people, saying earlier this week that it intended to cut nearly 30,000 jobs by the end of September instead.

The department effectively abandoned its previous plan to fire tens of thousands of workers as part of President Donald Trump’s

wide-reaching plan to slash the federal bureaucracy.

The new target, outlined in a department news release, would slash a workforce that numbered 484,000 earlier this year to about 455,000. Nearly 17,000 employees have already left.

Instead of firing workers, the rest of the cuts would be made by offering early retirement or severance payments, along with what the department described as “normal attrition” — the small percentage of employees who quit or move to other jobs every year.

“A departmentwide RIF is off the table,” said Doug Collins, the veterans affairs secretary, referring to a reduction in force, the formal process to initiate mass layoffs in the agency. “As a result of our efforts, VA is headed in the right direction — both in terms of staff levels and customer service,” he said.

The department, which provides health care for military veterans, had previously insisted that job cuts would not affect services and said again Monday that it had “multiple safeguards in place” to prevent disruptions.

A law signed by President Joe Biden had significantly expanded the veterans benefits system and set off a record-breaking hiring spree at the department. The department said Monday that it had continued to cut a backlog of benefits claims after a spike during the Biden administration.

In addition to its primary mission of providing care to veterans and serving as the nation’s backup health care system, the department also oversees some medical research and manages veterans benefits programs — such as pensions, banking, home loans, insurance, job training and funding for college degrees.

Officials feared flood risk to youth camps but rejected warning system

Eight years ago, in the aftermath of yet another river flood in the Texas Hill Country, officials in Kerr County debated whether more needed to be done to build a warning system along the banks of the Guadalupe River.

A series of summer camps along the river were often packed with children. For years, local officials kept them safe with a word-of-mouth system: When floodwaters started raging, upriver camp leaders warned those downriver of the water surge coming their way.

But was that enough? Officials considered supplementing the system with sirens and river gauges, along with other modern communications tools. “We can do all the water-level monitoring we want, but if we don’t get that information to the public in a timely way, then this whole thing is not worth it,” said Tom Moser, a Kerr County commissioner at the time.

In the end, little was done. When catastrophic floodwaters surged through Kerr County last week, there were no sirens or early flooding monitors. Instead, there were text alerts that came late for some residents and were dismissed or unseen by others.

The rural county of a little over 50,000 people, in a part of Texas known as “flash flood alley,” contemplated installing a flood warning system in 2017, but it was rejected as too expensive. The county, which has an annual budget of around $67 million, lost out on a bid at the time to secure a $1 million grant to fund the project, county commission meeting minutes show.

As recently as a May budget meeting, county commissioners were discussing a flood warning system being developed by a regional agency as something that they might be able to make use of.

broadcast on TV and radio; or sometimes through a series of sirens.

More complex systems use forecasts from the National Weather Service to predict rainfall and model what areas might be subject to flooding, Gori said.

After the 2015 floods, an improved monitoring system was installed in the Wimberley area, and cell towers are now used to send out notices to all cellphones in the area.

Moser, the former commissioner, visited Wimberley after its new system was in place, and then led efforts to have a flood warning system in Kerr County. His proposal would have included additional water detection systems and a system to alert the public, but the project never got off the ground, largely because of budget concerns.

“It sort of evaporated,” Moser said. “It just didn’t happen.”

One commissioner at the time, H.A. “Buster” Baldwin, voted against a $50,000 engineering study, according to a news account at the time, saying, “I think this whole thing is a little extravagant for Kerr County, with sirens and such.”

On Monday, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick of Texas acknowledged that flood-warning sirens might have saved lives if they had been along the river. He added that they needed to be in place by next summer.

The idea of a flood warning system was broached in 2015, in the aftermath of a deadly flood in Wimberley, Texas, about 75 miles east of Kerrville, the Kerr County seat.

The Guadalupe River Basin is one of the most dangerous regions in the United States when it comes to flash floods. Ordinary floods from heavy rainstorms occur regularly, inundating streets and threatening structures as floodwaters gradually rise. The region is also prone to flash floods, which can occur with little to no notice.

But in a recent interview, Rob Kelly, the Kerr County judge and its most senior elected official, said that local residents had been resistant to new spending. “Taxpayers won’t pay for it,” he said, adding that he didn’t know if people might reconsider now.

People living near the Guadalupe in Kerr County may have little time to seek higher ground, especially when flash floods come through late at night when people are asleep. In 1987, a rapidly rising Guadalupe River swept away a school bus carrying teens from a church camp, killing 10 of them.

Avantika Gori, a Rice University professor who is leading a federally funded project to improve flood resilience in rural Texas counties, said that flood warning systems are often simple networks of rain gauges or stream gauges that are triggered when rain or floodwaters exceed a certain level.

The gauges can then be used to warn those at risk of flooding, whether by text message, which may not be effective in areas with spotty cellphone service; notifications

Moser said it was hard to tell if a flood warning system would have prevented further tragedy in Kerr County during Friday’s flood, given the extraordinary circumstance of the flooding, which came suddenly after an intense period of rain. But he said he believed that such a system could have had some benefit.

“I think it could have helped a lot of people,” Moser said. The death toll from the flooding rose past 100 Monday evening, including at least 27 campers and staff members from a single summer camp, where 11 people were still missing.

According to a transcript from a Kerr County Commissioners’ Court meeting in 2017, officials discussed how even with additional water level sensors along the Guadalupe River, the county would still need a way to alert residents if water levels were rising dangerously fast.

Sirens, which are used across Texas to alert residents about tornadoes, were considered by county officials as a way to alert people who live along the river about any flooding.

“With all the hills and all, cell coverage is not that great in some areas in Hill Country,” Moser said, adding that a series of sirens might have provided people in vulnerable areas sufficient time to flee.

Moser retired as a commissioner of Kerr County in 2021. But he said last week’s flooding there should be taken as a warning.

“I think there’s going to be a lot of places in the United States that will look at this event that happened in Kerr County and determine what could be done,” Moser said. “I think things should come out of this. It should be a lesson learned.”

Trump’s new trade threats set off global scramble to avoid tariffs

Over the past three months, nations across the world tried to avoid new tariffs that would punish their economies by giving President Donald Trump something he might want.

Indonesia offered to buy $34 billion more in U.S. crops and fuels. Thailand proposed lowering many of its own trade barriers, and buying more U.S.-made planes. Japan was ready to buy more liquefied natural gas over the next two decades.

But as Trump’s self-imposed July 9 deadline approached, those entreaties made little difference. The 14 letters he posted online Monday, mostly aimed at countries in Asia, largely matched the rates set in April, before he backed off and gave dozens of countries 90 days to negotiate agreements that would satisfy the White House’s demand for more balanced trade.

“We have had years to discuss our Trading Relationship with Thailand, and have concluded that we must move away from these long-term, and very persistent, Trade Deficits engendered by Thailand’s Tariff, and NonTariff, Policies and Trade Barriers,” Trump wrote, swapping out only each country’s name in otherwise virtually identical missives.

That fresh volley has left countries large and small, nearly all of them long-standing allies of the United States, with profound questions about how to move forward with the world’s largest consumer economy when negotiations over trade conflicts are labored and deadlines are extended without warning.

Asian nations largely built their economies to supply the West. Trump’s announcements amount to a declaration that the relationship must fundamentally change, and reactions by regional players carry vast implications for the flow of goods and the contours of geopolitics in the years to come.

With Trump’s earlier tariffs on automobiles and steel as well as a fentanyl-related duty on China, the weighted average tariff for goods coming from Asia would rise to 27% — up from 4.8% in January — if all of the announced rates go into effect on Aug. 1, according to calculations by Morgan Stanley. That rate could rise even further if the United States follows through on its threats to place separate duties on pharmaceuticals and semiconductors.

Economists expect the tariffs, which Trump sees as a way to revive American manufacturing and add revenue to the federal budget, will reduce U.S. imports. American companies, as well as their business partners abroad, would suffer lower profit margins as the government levies are split between consumers, importers and exporters. Firms would be left with less money to pay wages and invest in their growth.

Facing Trump’s accusations of unfair trade practices, some countries on his Monday mailing list have few bar-

gaining chips. South Korea, for example, 13 years ago inaugurated a free-trade agreement with the United States that has reduced nearly all tariffs between the two countries to zero.

South Korea’s newly elected president, Lee Jae Myung, tried to come up with offers, such as cooperation in helping the United States rebuild its shipbuilding industry. He sent both his top trade negotiator and his national security adviser over the past few days to meet with Trump administration officials to try to hash out a deal.

Nevertheless, South Korea was met with a 25% tariff, the same as the one that was paused in April. Although all the new tariffs will not go into effect until Aug. 1, creating a window to de-escalate, it remains unclear what could persuade Trump to relent.

“We are doing our best to bring about a result mutually beneficial to both sides, but we have been unable to establish what each side exactly wanted from the other side,” Lee said on Thursday.

In several cases, leaders in Asia expressed exasperation that they were back to square one even while actively engaging in talks. A Thai delegation had met last week with Jamieson Greer, the U.S. trade representative, and a top official at the Treasury Department, only to receive a 36% rate in Trump’s Monday barrage.

“I think it’s a bit of a contradiction,” said Phumtham Wechayachai, Thailand’s acting prime minister. “We negotiated with the trade representatives, the appointed intermediary to negotiate. However, the White House, the related parties, they sent out the letter.”

The bewilderment was not limited to Asia. Goods from South Africa will face a 30% U.S. tariff, according to a letter from Trump to President Cyril Ramaphosa. In a statement Monday, the South African leader said that the tariff rate was based on a “contested interpretation” of the trade balance between his country and the United States. Around three-quarters of U.S. goods are sold in South Africa with zero tariffs, Ramaphosa noted.

Ramaphosa has sought reassurances that his country could rely on the United States as a market for its goods and an investor in its economy, which is suffering from high unemployment and low growth. But after receiving Trump’s letter, Ramaphosa urged his trade negotiators and South African companies “to accelerate their diversification efforts,” reducing reliance on U.S. trade.

There is one major clue about what Trump might want in the deal he struck last week with Vietnam. That country has agreed in principle to a 40% tariff on any goods that flow across its borders from China, which has happened with increasing frequency as the United States has ramped up barriers to goods coming from China directly.

A similar clause appears in all of the letters sent Monday, declaring that “goods transshipped to evade a higher tariff will be subject to that higher tariff.” Effectively, the Trump administration is forcing nations to choose between China and the world’s biggest consumer economy, the United States. It’s not an easy decision to make, or to follow through on.

Take semiconductors, an essential component for everything from iPhones to automobiles. Taiwanese and South Korean companies have dominated chip production for decades, but the supply chain is complex and specialized, with materials and equipment from Japan and testing laboratories in Malaysia. They now have factories in China and sell many of their chips there — an arrangement that has upset Washington, which wants to slow China’s progress on the development of artificial intelligence.

“The U.S. does not actually want zero tariffs or a free-trade agreement with these countries,” said HsienMing Lien, president of the Chung-Hua Institution for Economic Research, a think tank in Taipei, Taiwan. “What Trump really wants to do is to build up a manufacturing supply chain which has as little influence from China as possible.”

Stocks nearly flat, yen extends fall; Trump broadens trade war

Major stock indexes were little changed on Tuesday as investors digested the latest news in U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariff rollout, and the yen extended its slide against the dollar on planned 25% duties on goods from Japan.

Trump broadened his global trade war on Tuesday, announcing a 50% tariff on imported copper, and said long-threatened levies on semiconductors and pharmaceuticals were coming soon. Shares of Freeport-McMoRan were up 4%.

On Monday, Trump sent letters to 14 countries, including major Asian trading partners such as Japan and South Korea, saying they face sharply higher tariffs on imports into the United States starting from a new date of August 1.

Stocks sold off on Monday but market reactions have not been as severe as in the aftermath of Trump’s sweeping tariff announcement in April. Some market watchers expect countries to seek trade deals with the United States before the new deadline.

European stocks held firm, with sources saying the European Union will not be receiving a letter setting out higher tariffs and that the EU could reach a trade deal by Wednesday.

“It’s kind of a sluggish day. People digested the tariff news yesterday (Monday), and we saw weakness. People are kind of on hold until we start seeing second-quarter earnings,” said Peter Tuz, president of Chase Investment Counsel in Charlottesville, Virginia.

S&P 500 companies will soon begin reporting results on the quarter that ended June 30.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 156.46 points, or 0.35%, to 44,249.90, the S&P 500 fell 2.88 points, or 0.05%, to 6,226.88 and the Nasdaq Composite rose 13.72 points, or 0.07%, to 20,426.23.

MSCI’s gauge of stocks across the globe rose 0.03 points to 919.96. The pan-European STOXX 600 index ended up 0.41%.

Hopes of trade deals buoyed risk appetite for regional assets on Tuesday as MSCI’s broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan rose 0.5%, while Japan’s Nikkei reversed early declines and finished 0.26% higher.

kets since Trump capped in April what he called reciprocal tariffs with trading partners at 10% for three months to allow for negotiations.

Trump escalates criticism of Putin after restoring arms shipments to Ukraine

President Donald Trump stepped up his crit-

icism of President Vladimir Putin of Russia on Tuesday, accusing him of duplicity a day after saying that Ukraine needed more weapons to defend itself against Russian’s invasion.

“We get a lot of bullshit thrown at us by Putin, if you want to know the truth,” Trump told reporters during a Cabinet meeting. “He’s very nice to us all the time, but it turns out to be meaningless.”

The harsh rhetoric was notable for Trump, who has often expressed skepticism of U.S. aid to Ukraine and admiration for Putin’s intelligence and strength. Just months ago, Trump dressed down President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine in the Oval Office, claiming he had been insufficiently grateful for America’s support.

But Trump has increasingly suggested that Putin has become an impediment to the peace deal he is seeking to negotiate.

Trump said Monday that the United States was resuming munitions shipments to Ukraine to help it fend off Russia’s invasion. Just last week, the White House acknowledged that the administration had paused the delivery of some air defense interceptors and precision-guided bombs and missiles to Ukraine, citing Pentagon concerns that U.S. weapons stockpiles were dwindling.

Notably, Trump refused on Tuesday to say whether he knew in advance about the pause on munitions shipments. While seated beside his defense secretary, Pete Hegseth, Trump was repeatedly pressed about who ordered the pause.

“I don’t know,” he said to the reporter. “Why don’t you tell me?”

Throughout his remarks, the president re-

Wildfires burn in Spain and France after blistering heat wave

Wildfires were raging in Spain and France on Tuesday, prompting the closure of an international airport, after a dayslong heat wave parched landscapes in the region and turned woodlands into tinderboxes.

At least five people and five firefighters were injured in southern France, where a blaze near the city of Narbonne was burning for a second day, according to local authorities. Officials said in a statement that the wildfire had already scorched nearly 5,000 acres of land and that more than 1,000 firefighters were working to bring it under control.

Over 150 miles away, just north of Marseille, a separate blaze started by a car fire and fueled by powerful, erratic winds tore through 1,700 acres of dry vegetation. The wildfire forced a nearby airport to halt all takeoffs and landings, disrupted local train and road traffic, and cast thick clouds of acrid smoke over the city.

Local authorities said that over 700 firefighters had managed to stop the flames at the city’s northern limits, with limited destruction and no deaths so far. Georges-François Leclerc, the local state representative, urged the population to remain calm, hunker down at home to avoid toxic fumes and keep roads clear for firefighters.

“The situation is not set in stone; it has not stabilized, but it is under control,” he told reporters.

The French weather agency also warned that there was a high risk of forest fires elsewhere in the country, given the windy conditions.

Across the border in Spain, Catalonia regional authorities ordered residents in nearly a dozen towns and neighborhoods to remain in their homes as firefighters battled a blaze that the area’s emergency services said had burned nearly 6,000 acres since Monday.

Gusts up to 55 mph were complicating the efforts of the 89 teams of firefighters, said David Borrell, the region’s fire inspector.

“We have been working all night in very precarious, very hard conditions,” Borrell said in a statement, adding that distress calls from terrified residents increased overnight.

Last week, stifling heat gripped much of Western Europe, with France and Spain the hardest hit. The heat wave dried out the terrain, creating fuel for wildfires, according to weather agencies and experts.

“In parts of Southern Europe, it’s a perfect storm: scorching heat, severe drought, and vast plantations of flammable, non-native trees like eucalyptus,” Sarah Carter, a researcher at Global Forest Watch, said in an email.

And while much of France has cooled

in recent days, the same weather system that created a cooling breeze is responsible for gusts of wind that quickly spread fires, according to the French weather agency.

In other parts of Europe, rising temperatures prompted weather warnings in several countries.

In Greece, temperatures rose above 40 Celsius, or 104 Fahrenheit, on Tuesday. The heat prompted authorities in Athens to restrict visiting hours to the Acropolis, the archaeological site popular with tourists that overlooks the capital. The Greek Civil Protection Ministry warned that there was an “extremely high” risk of wildfires in Athens and issued more moderate warnings for other parts of the country.

In Portugal, four active fires were burning in the west, according to Fogos, a website that tracks blazes in the country.

Romania’s weather agency issued a red warning, its highest, as forecasters predicted that temperatures could climb as high as 41 Celsius, or 105.8 Fahrenheit. In Serbia, the weather agency there warned of “very dangerous” conditions, with temperatures expected to exceed 38 Celsius, or 100.4 Fahrenheit.

On Monday, the Greek Labor Ministry ordered businesses to pause working hours when temperatures peak in the afternoon or face fines of up to 2,000 euros (about $2,300).

peatedly railed against how Russia is carrying out its war against Ukraine.

“We’re not happy with Putin. I’m not happy with Putin. I can tell you that much right now, because he’s killing a lot of people,” Trump said.

At another point, he said Putin was “not treating human beings right,” adding that the Russian president was “killing too many people, so we’re sending some defensive weapons to Ukraine.”

On Friday, Russia attacked Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities with the largest number of drones and missiles launched in a single barrage so far in the war, according to the Ukrainian air force. The attack came just hours after a phone call between Trump and Putin.

Document casts doubt on White House’s claims about deported Venezuelans

For the past several months, the Trump administration has insisted in court that it has no control over the nearly 140 Venezuelan immigrants it deported to a prison in El Salvador this spring under the powers of a rarely used wartime statute.

Both in filings and at hearings, Trump officials have asserted that because the men are being held by jailers in El Salvador, the Salvadoran government has control over their fate. The administration has repeatedly made that claim to argue that it has no real authority to bring the immigrants back.

On Monday, however, lawyers for the Venezuelan men produced a document indicating that the government of El Salvador recently told the United Nations that it, in fact, bears no legal responsibility for the men. The document, written in response to a U.N. inquiry examining some of the deportations, also claimed that the Salvadoran government was merely doing the United States’ bidding when it accepted the men into its prison system.

“The actions of the state of El Salvador have been limited to the implementation of a bilateral cooperation mechanism with another state, through which it has facilitated the use of the Salvadoran prison infrastructure for the custody of persons detained within the scope of the justice system and law enforcement of that other state,” the document said.

“In this context,” it went on, “the jurisdiction and legal responsibility for these persons lie exclusively with the competent foreign authorities, by virtue of international agreements signed and in accordance with the principles of sovereignty and international cooperation in criminal matters.”

The document was included in a new court filing submitted to Judge James E. Boasberg, who has been hearing a longrunning legal case brought by the Venezuelan men in U.S. District Court in Washington. As part of that case, Boasberg ordered the Trump administration last month to take steps toward providing the men with the due process they were denied when the White House deported them to El Salvador un-

der the expansive powers of the wartime law, known as the Alien Enemies Act.

The document could present a problem for the administration because it seems to undermine a position that lawyers for the Justice Department and top Trump officials have taken time and again in front of Boasberg. The lawyers for the Venezuelans also claimed that department lawyers knew about the document for months but failed to inform either them or the judge.

“We are pleased that El Sal- vador publicly told the truth about what we all knew: that it’s the United States that controls the fate of the Venezuelans,” said Lee Gelernt, a lawyer for the American Civil Liberties Union, which, along with another legal group, Democracy Forward, has been representing the men. “That the United States did not provide us or the court with this information is extraordinary.”

Skye Perryman, the president and CEO of Democracy Forward, added, “The documents filed with the court today show that the administration has not been honest with the court or the American people.”

A Justice Department spokesperson did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment.

The underlying agreement between the Trump administration and the government of President Nayib Bukele of El Salvador first began to attract attention after the White House deported scores of Venezuelans accused of being members of the street gang Tren de Aragua to El Salvador on March 15.

An investigation by The New York Times recently found that the U.S. government not only paid Bukele’s administration millions of dollars as part of the deal, but also added an extra sweetener at his request: the return to El Salvador of top leaders in a different street gang, MS-13, some of whom had knowledge of his corrupt relations with the group.

The case in front of Boasberg is just one of the many legal skirmishes between the ACLU and the Trump administration over President Donald Trump’s use of the Alien Enemies Act. Shortly after he returned to office, Trump issued a proclamation invoking the act to deport Venezuelans accused of being members of Tren de Aragua, which he has designated as a foreign terrorist organization.

Federal courts around the country have been divided on the issue of whether he has

properly used the law, which was first passed in 1798 and is meant to be employed only in times of declared war or during an invasion by a hostile foreign nation.

Last week, a federal appeals court in New Orleans held its own hearing about the president’s proclamation in a case that is likely to be the first to end up at the Supreme Court. The justices have already decided that the White House failed to give immigrants ample opportunity to challenge their removals under the act. But they have yet to rule on whether Trump’s claims that the presence of Tren de Aragua in the United States is tantamount to an invasion and that its members have been acting at the behest of a hostile Venezuelan government comport with reality.

When Boasberg ordered the administration to work toward giving due process to the Venezuelan men even though they remain locked up at the so-called Terrorism Confinement Center, or CECOT, his instructions came in a sweeping — and at times outraged — ruling that compared them to characters in a Kafka novel.

The judge asserted that the White House had effectively stripped the men of their rights by not allowing them to contest their deportations before they were flown into the custody of Salvadoran jailers. But he did not weigh in on the larger question of whether Trump had invoked the Alien Enemies Act lawfully when he expelled the men to El Salvador.

It remains unclear what effect, if any, the new document could have on Boasberg’s decision, which was temporarily put on hold last month by the federal appeals court that sits over him.

The lawyers for the Venezuelans said they wanted to reserve the right to ask the government for additional discovery information about the deal the administration had struck with El Salvador, given that the new document seemed to go beyond “the current record” in the case in front of Boasberg.

The lawyers said that such additional information was important because the new material contradicted a sworn declaration filed in May by Michael G. Kozak, a senior State Department diplomat.

“It was and remains my understanding that the detention and ultimate disposition of those detained in CECOT and other Salvadoran detention facilities,” Kozak said in the declaration, “are matters within the legal authority of El Salvador in accordance with its domestic and international legal obligations.”

One of the worst industries in the world gets its comeuppance NEW YORK TIMES EDITORIAL

The porn industry just got what it deserved at the Supreme Court.

On the last day of its term, by a 6-3 vote, the court delivered a decisive ruling against one of the worst industries in America. It upheld a Texas law that requires pornographic websites to “use reasonable age verification methods” to make sure that their customers are at least 18 years old. The court split on ideological lines, with the six Republican appointees voting to uphold the law and the three Democratic appointees in dissent.

When you see what appears to be a sharp ideological divide on the court, it’s easy to jump to conclusions, to label, for example, the liberals on the court pro-porn compared with the conservatives, but that’s fundamentally wrong. In this case, the most important words from the court came not from Justice Clarence Thomas’ majority opinion but from Justice Elena Kagan’s dissent.

“No one doubts that the distribution of sexually explicit speech to children, of the sort involved here, can cause great harm,” Kagan wrote. “Or to say the same thing in legal terms, no one doubts that states have a compelling interest in shielding children from speech of that kind. What is more, children have no constitutional right to view it.”

There, in plain English, is a powerful declaration — one that should echo in American law and American culture.

From left to right, all nine justices agree that pornography can cause great harm to children. All nine agree not merely that children have no constitutional right to view it but also that the state has a compelling interest in blocking their access.

And it’s no wonder. Our nation’s young people are in the midst of a virtual pornography pandemic. The combination of early exposure and the sheer violence and cruelty in so much modern pornography means that children are getting a sex education in exploitation.

Interestingly, the difference between the justices was about not the degree of depravity in porn but rather the precise legal test to use to evaluate the Texas law. The lower court, the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, had used the most lenient possible standard, rational-basis review.

Under rational-basis review, a court will uphold a statute as long as the law has a rational connection to a legitimate state interest. It is exceedingly rare for a court to strike down a law under rational-basis review.

Because kids have no right of access to porn, the 5th Circuit reasoned, the Texas law didn’t implicate the First Amendment, and thus the court should uphold the law so long as Texas could articulate a rational basis for it.

Rational-basis review was never going to fly at the Supreme Court. Kids don’t have a right of access to pornography, but adults do, and the identification requirement puts a burden on adults’ rights by requiring them to upload identification (and risk their privacy), which means it couldn’t be the case that only rational-basis review applied.

But if rational-basis review was wrong, then what was the proper standard? That’s where the court diverged. Thomas decided to apply a test called intermediate scrutiny, which he described as “deferential but not toothless.”

To pass intermediate scrutiny, a law must, according to Cornell Law’s legal encyclopedia, “further an important government interest,” and it “must do so by means that are substantially related to that interest.” That’s wrong, Kagan argued. Because the law is targeted at the content of pornographic speech, the toughest and most speechprotective test should be applied — strict scrutiny.

Under strict scrutiny, a law can survive judicial review only if it is narrowly tailored and uses the least restrictive means to advance a compelling state interest. Lawyers like to say that strict scrutiny is so tough that it’s strict in theory but fatal in fact.

This technical legal explanation brings me to an important point: Although Kagan wanted to send the case back to the lower court so that it could apply the stricter test, she also wrote that in this case, strict scrutiny might not be fatal after all. The Texas law, she wrote, “might well pass the strictscrutiny test, hard as it usually is to do so.”

To understand why, let’s leave the court for a moment. Last month The New York Times published a poignant Modern Love essay — “Men, Where Have You Gone? Please Come Back,” by Rachel Drucker. In powerful, personal terms she described how she’s noticing that men are retreating from

A Supreme Court Police officer outside the Supreme Court building in Washington, on Friday, June 27, 2025. (Haiyun Jiang/The New York Times)

intimacy.

Drucker used to work for Playboy, and she knew what drew men to the magazine’s website. “It wasn’t intimacy. It wasn’t mutuality. It was access to stimulation — clean, fast and frictionless.”

And what men see is quite often much worse than you would even want to imagine. When the court’s decision was announced, I saw an odd little surge online of what one might call porn nostalgia, as older people chuckled at the idea that pornography could be truly harmful.

But the world the chucklers grew up in was fundamentally different from the world we live in today. There is no comparison between a stack of Playboys underneath a friend’s father’s bed and the tidal wave of vile content online.

“In 2019,” Thomas wrote, “Pornhub, one of the websites involved in this case, published 1.36 million hours — or over 150 years — of new content.” But the problem extends well beyond the sheer volume of pornography. Citing my colleague Nick Kristof’s vitally important 2020 report “The Children of Pornhub,” Thomas explained that “many of these readily accessible videos portray men raping and physically assaulting women — a far cry from the still images that made up the bulk of online pornography in the 1990s.”

It is a grotesque industry that produces content like this. An even worse industry makes it available to children.

Against this backdrop, Thomas was right about the outcome, but Kagan was right about the test. A law aimed at the content of speech should receive strict scrutiny, but Texas’ law should still have survived even the most exacting review.

A generation ago, the Supreme Court struck down efforts to age-limit access to porn websites. The technology was too primitive, and besides, aren’t there other ways to limit kids’ access to pornography? Can’t parents supervise their children? Can’t blocking technology protect young eyes?

Audience report: Celebrating 50 years of ‘Jaws’ on Martha’s Vineyard

It was Day 3 of “Amity Homecoming Weekend” on Martha’s Vineyard, and like thousands of other “Jaws” superfans celebrating the movie’s 50th anniversary on the island where it was filmed, David Scanlon was living his dream.

Scanlon, 30, of Savannah, Georgia, has loved “Jaws” since his first viewing, at age 3, from which he somehow emerged more enchanted than petrified. At 10, he begged his mother to take him to Martha’s Vineyard, 7 miles off Cape Cod in Massachusetts, for the 30th-anniversary festivities.

“Not this time,” she had told him. “We’ll go for the 50th.”

And so it was that Scanlon and his mother — along with his sister, brother-in-law and 15-month-old nephew, Georgie — sat by the sparkling harbor Sunday afternoon, steps from a replica of the Orca, the fishing boat where the movie’s terrifying climax unfolds, savoring an experience two decades in the making.

“It’s a perfect film,” Scanlon said, “and from a very young age, you understand that — long before you have any technical understanding of why.”

The anniversary festivities on the Vineyard included a jam-packed schedule of VIP meet-and-greets, book signings, film screenings, and lectures about sharks and the movie’s history. At the Martha’s Vineyard Museum, a “Jaws” exhibit included one of the battle-scarred yellow barrels that the movie’s giant great white shark dragged into the depths.

There were limited-edition “Jaws” doughnuts and cocktails to sample, and a dizzying array of merch to buy, including a $40, apricot-scented commemorative candle called “Chrissie’s Last Swim,” in honor of the movie shark’s first victim.

But for many who traveled long distances to be there,

the real draw was the island itself: the sweeping, grass-fringed beaches and postcard-perfect villages they had come to know and love from repeated viewings of director Steven Spielberg’s blockbuster breakthrough, which was released in theaters June 20, 1975.

Michael Robert Anderson, 33, a filmmaker from Staten Island, New York, who credits his career choice to the influence of “Jaws” and Spielberg, said he found it deeply cathartic to finally see the movie scenery that felt as familiar as his own neighborhood. Touring the island, he referred to stills from the film that he had downloaded on his phone, and snapped a matching photo of his own in each location.

Most looked much as they did in the movie, he said, a likeness that amazed him as he walked through modern-day Edgartown, the stand-in for the movie’s fictional village of Ami-

ty Island.

“This is almost like coming to the set, and the set’s still here,” Anderson said. “You’re just waiting to hear Steven Spielberg say, ‘The shark’s not working!’”

(The mechanical shark in the movie, nicknamed Bruce, frequently broke down, which was one reason that the 1974 shoot ran 100 days over schedule.)

Speaking at the museum Sunday, Joe Alves, the movie’s production designer, described how he initially set out to scout locations on the island of Nantucket, 30 miles offshore. His ferry turned back to Cape Cod because of bad weather, but the ferry to the Vineyard — much closer to land — was still running, so he went there instead.

“When I saw Edgartown, I said, ‘This is perfect,’” Alves recalled. “A perfect little village for a shark to destroy.”

Previously a quiet, rural retreat, frequented mostly by New Englanders, the Vineyard grew into a busier, higher-end destination in part because of the exposure “Jaws” gave it. To some, the movie deserves a share of blame for what they consider unwelcome changes.

On Sunday, as guests mingled at a VIP reception on the museum lawn, Patricia Pachico, 65, a lifelong island resident, sat with a friend at the bar 2 miles away at VFW Post 9261. Both expressed some resentment of the crowds and traffic that the movie’s success spawned.

“It’s not our island anymore,” Pachico said. “It’s ‘Jaws’ Island now.”

The most arduous — and dangerous — 50th-anniversary tribute was that of Lewis Pugh, a British endurance swimmer, who swam 60 miles around the island over 12 days last month to raise awareness about global shark hunting and declining shark populations, which threaten ocean ecosystems.

Like Spielberg in 1974, Pugh and his support team tapped the expertise of local fishermen to help them navigate the rocky coast in weather conditions that ranked among the worst the veteran swimmer has faced.

“We’ve always had a cardinal rule that we never speak about sharks,” Pugh said in an interview. “But this time, I wanted to speak about sharks and reshape the narrative about them, the culture of fear that ‘Jaws’ has shaped for 50 years.”

(Pugh, 55, who has never rewatched “Jaws” since his first viewing, did not spot any sharks during his Vineyard swim.)

For some swimmers at Vineyard beaches last weekend, sharks were not the primary source of fear. Liah Camacho, 9, who grew up on the island, instead battled her dread of deep water as she sought to make her first leap off the “Jaws Bridge,” so called because it appears in the film.

Two days earlier, on the Friday night that marked 50 years since “Jaws” debuted in theaters, Scanlon, the fan from Savannah, had marked another kind of milestone. In a hotel room in Raynham, Massachusetts, en route to the Vineyard, he sat his 15-month-old nephew on his lap and showed him “Jaws” for the first time.

The baby had been mesmerized, the family said, watching it twice through without a peep.

“He won’t remember it, but we will,” Scanlon said. “It was quite a moment.”

Don’t like eating insects? Your pet might.

In an ideal world, Watson would have approached the treats cautiously, with a careful sniff and tentative lick. But, being a dog — with a voracious appetite and no discernible appreciation for narrative tension — he devoured them immediately. He didn’t know, or care, that they were chock-full of dried crickets and ground-up grubs.

And so what I had envisioned as a climactic taste test was over in seconds, with what was, in retrospect, an utterly predictable result: my dog would happily eat insects.

For years, some enterprising food entrepreneurs have been trying to convince people to do the same. As the global demand for protein grows, insects, they say, provide a more sustainable, ethical alternative to traditional meat. But the idea has been a tough sell. Although insects are a dietary staple in some cultures, for many people, they trigger a visceral disgust response.

But dogs? If they have a disgust reflex, I haven’t seen it. Insect entrepreneurs looking for open-minded eaters could hardly do better than good old Canis lupus familiaris.

“The dogs are not going to overthink it,” said Anne Carlson, the CEO of Jiminy’s, which makes insect-based pet food and treats.

Hers is one of many pet food companies trying to remake meat. This year, the British company Meatly sold a limited run of dog treats made with lab-grown chicken. BioCraft Pet Nutrition, in Austria, is working to turn stem cells from mice into food for cats and dogs. And Bond Pet Foods, in the United States, is using yeast to produce animal protein through the process of fermentation.

There’s still substantial skepticism about the future of insect protein and lab-grown meat in the human food supply — and about whether such ingredients can really wean us off our ribeyes and fried chicken. Some entrepreneurs see pet food as a natural proving ground.

If a company can “crack the code for pet food, the path to commercialization could be relatively easier,” said Rich Kelleman, the CEO of Bond Pet Foods. Pet food companies don’t need to replicate the experience of biting into a perfectly crisped drumstick. “For dogs and cats, it has to taste good,” Kelleman said. “But it doesn’t necessarily have to taste like chicken, exactly.”

The pitch

Industrial animal agriculture takes a profound toll on the environment, requiring lots of land and water, and producing significant pollution, including greenhouse gases.

The pet food industry, which often uses agricultural byproducts, has a smaller environmental footprint than the human food sector. “But it is material, and we shouldn’t ignore it,” said Peter Alexander, an expert on global food systems at the University of Edinburgh.

Insects and lab-made animal protein have the potential to be far less damaging to the environment. And because pets tend to eat the same thing every day, changing their food “can have real impact,” Carlson said. “It’s like flipping a switch. One day it’s unsustainable, the next, it’s sustainable.”

Reducing our reliance on industrial animal agriculture could also prevent immense animal suffering. “In the pet industry, it’s all about loving animals,” said Owen Ensor, the CEO of Meatly. “And I think a lot of people are increasingly uncomfortable with needing to harm and kill a lot of other animals to feed those animals.”

Vegan pet food also addresses these problems but has to be very carefully formulated — and it won’t appeal to all owners, altmeat entrepreneurs say. “People want to feed their pets meat,” said Ensor, who is vegan but has two cats who are not.

The hitch

In addition to Watson, I also have two cats. At first, figuring out how to feed them all was like trying to solve an impossible riddle.

Watson, an intensely food-motivated dog with a heart condition, needs a weight-control kibble and must be kept away from the cat food, which he finds tantalizingly delicious. Juniper, my chronically underweight cat, should ideally have free access to her food — and is also a picky eater who reliably consumes only chicken. Then there’s Goose, a cat who will eat until he makes himself sick and happens to have a food sensitivity to, yes, chicken.

Finding the right meal plan for this menagerie took months of trial and error. So, as much as the sustainability and animal welfare arguments appeal to me, I’m reluctant to start switching things up.

I’m not alone, apparently. “What we’re learning is that people don’t really react or buy based on sustainability,” Carlson said.

Shannon Falconer, the CEO of BioCraft Pet Nutrition, agreed. “The main driver of any and all pet parent is the health of their animal,” she said. “That will supersede anything else.” In fact, another trend in the pet food market — the rise of high-end, human-grade products loaded with prime meat — runs directly counter to the quest for greater sustainability.

Some companies are leaning hard into health claims. Insects, they say, are perfect for pets like Goose, who are sensitive or allergic to common proteins. It’s a compelling argument, and if I ever need to find a new food for Goose, I’d consider an insect-

based one.

But I’m not yet convinced by claims that insect protein is a “superfood” — one that some companies suggest could improve everything from gut health and coat quality to cognition and immune function.

Research suggests that insects are indeed a “high-quality protein source,” with good digestibility and palatability, said Kelly Swanson, a comparative nutritionist at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. But data on specific functional benefits is limited, especially in cats and dogs. And companies will need to demonstrate that their products include enough of the ingredient to bring about whatever benefits they’re promising, Swanson said.

The verdict

Ultimately, whether alternative proteins pay environmental dividends will depend on many factors, including how they are made — some production methods can be resource intensive — how widely they are adopted and what pet food products they displace.

As Alexander put it, “It all comes down to, ‘What are you swapping from? What are you swapping to?’” Transitioning from pet food containing premium beef, which has an especially high environmental impact, to products with lab-grown meat would probably yield environmental benefits, he said. “However, I’m doubtful that switching from animal byproducts or plant-based ingredients to lab-grown meat will be beneficial,” he added. And in order to have a real impact, alt-protein companies will need to produce these ingredients at higher quantities and lower prices. Meatly, which is raising money for an industrialscale production facility, launched with a limited supply of dog treats made with just 4% cultivated chicken.

Yora Pet Foods sells large bags of its insect-based dog kibble for $4.50 to $5 a pound, more than 1 1/2 times what I pay for Watson’s current food. At the moment, the grubs Yora uses cost almost as much to produce as free-range chicken, said James Milbourne, a managing director at the company. “If you walk into the shop and you’ve got a bag of lovely free-range chicken and a bag of insects, and they’re the same price,” he said, “it just makes it more difficult to get that person to take a punt on it.”

But if companies can scale up and bring prices down, I do think customers will follow. In a 2022 study, nearly half of dog and cat owners surveyed, including some who had no interest in eating lab-grown meat themselves, said they’d be willing to feed cultivated meat to their pets.

Watson, a dog owned by Emily Anthes, eats food containing insect protein. Insectprotein entrepreneurs looking for open-minded eaters could hardly do better than a dog like Watson. (Sonny Figueroa/The New York Times)

The ‘first celebrity athlete,’ a century before social media

Before Deion Sanders or Bo Jackson, there was Jim Thorpe.

More than a century ago, Thorpe was a multisport star, excelling in football, baseball and lacrosse, and winning gold medals in the decathlon and pentathlon at the 1912 Stockholm Games. But as a Native American, he faced what many historians considered racial bias when those medals were stripped because he had previously earned modest payment for playing baseball, which the International Olympic Committee said violated amateurism rules.

The IOC agreed to return Thorpe’s medals in 1982, almost 30 years after his death, and last year President Joe Biden awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom, which was accepted by Thorpe’s granddaughter.

On Monday, a new project by the History Channel, “Jim Thorpe: Lit by Lightning,” explores the triumphs and injustices of Thorpe’s athletic career. The two-hour documentary was directed by Chris Eyre, a Native American filmmaker, and produced by Uninterrupted, a media company co-founded by LeBron James.

In an interview with The New York Times, Eyre discussed the creative process and how he sees Thorpe’s legacy playing out today. Excerpts from the conversation have been edited for length and clarity.

Q: Why was now a good time to do this project?

A: I had heard about Jim Thorpe ever since I was a kid, and I felt like his name — I didn’t want it to fade from the consciousness because he’s one of the greatest Americans that ever lived and he’s the greatest athlete ever. I jumped at getting to make something.

Q: How did you try to strike a balance for the tone to be educational but not overly academic?

A: As the filmmaker, it was all about the person behind the

victories, and as a Native person, my point of view was purely about, Who is this person? I think that we’ve found a new angle on Jim Thorpe, which was: He was a very humble servant of sports. He didn’t do it for the social media and the accolades, and he didn’t do it for the money because there was no money. He became the first celebrity athlete before the money and the accolades that we see today, so he did it for different reasons.

Q: What was the challenge of trying to find a new angle on someone whose life has been reported on extensively?

A: I didn’t want to tell a story about a person who was victimized by bias. I looked at this story and said, “People need to know these things about his facts in terms of sports.” What happened to him or where he came from was secondary to the fact that he just persevered.

Q: Thorpe experienced racist media coverage and had his Olympic medals stripped. Do you see any parallels with athletes today compared to 100 years ago?

A: It was a different time and place, and I think the similarity is that sports is the great vehicle for people finding their way. He certainly channeled sports as his means of survival, and I think that’s why he became the greatest ever is because he had so much in his social bag. He came from a time where people were trying to exterminate Native Americans. If he wouldn’t have found sports, like a lot of other athletes, they didn’t have another place to turn.

Q: A group of Native Americans are vying to compete as their own lacrosse team at the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. How does Thorpe’s legacy help pave the way for that possibility?

A: I think that’s a foot forward in terms of the diversity and allowance of what we want, which is these are tribal nations within this nation. If they want to bring their traditional sport to the Olympics, I think more power to them. I think that’s what Jim Thorpe’s story was all about: passion and tenacity.

The Royal Box: Who’s in Wimbledon’s most exclusive seats?

For tennis fans, Wimbledon is an annual highlight, one of the best opportunities to watch premier athletes compete in the sport. For celebrity watchers in Britain, it’s akin to the Super Bowl.

The Grand Slam tournament at the All England Club in southwest London draws some of the globe’s biggest names in business, politics and entertainment. The most illustrious attendees are given the best seats in the house — the Royal Box. Entry to the oak-lined section at the south end of Centre Court is by invitation only and is reserved for guests from the royal family, tennis stars, and “individuals of distinction and others who in various ways contribute to the betterment of our lives and society,” according to Robert McNicol, the historian for the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, which hosts the event.

The box, which seats around 80 people, comes with rules,

however, including a strict dress code. “Smart” attire is required, with a suit and tie for men and an “afternoon dress” or “elegant trouser suit” for women. Women are asked not to wear hats, as they can block the view for other guests.

The coveted seats also come with an elaborate lunch. The menu last week included poached native Cornish lobster tail and spiced lamb cannon, sourced from a herd of Herdwick sheep originally owned by Beatrix Potter, the author of “The Tale of Peter Rabbit.”

Here’s a look at some of the celebrities and dignitaries who have graced the Royal Box last week:

— Cate Blanchett, who played Queen Elizabeth I in the 1998 period drama “Elizabeth,” attended with her mother, June, last Tuesday.

— Olivia Rodrigo, fresh from headlining the Glastonbury music festival, stopped by last Wednesday with her boyfriend, English actor Louis Partridge.

— Australian actor Russell Crowe, who recently signed on

for a reboot of the film “Highlander,” about an immortal Scottish warrior, made an appearance last Tuesday.

— Crowe’s fellow Australian, actor Rebel Wilson, also scored a seat last Tuesday.

— Dave Grohl — the Nirvana drummer and Foo Fighters frontman — attended with his wife, Jordyn Blum, on Wednesday, months after he announced that he had a child outside his marriage.

— Indian actress Priyanka Chopra and her husband, singer Nick Jonas, found their seats Wednesday.

— Actor and professional wrestler John Cena and his wife, Shay Shariatzadeh, were in the box Wednesday.

— Members of the royal family also attended last Monday, including Princess Beatrice of York and Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York, in her first appearance in the box in more than 20 years, according to the British news media.

— A number of British athletes were also spotted last week, including the recently knighted David Beckham.
