New Fortress Energy has suspended deliveries of liquefied natural gas to Puerto Rico.
In a letter written to Energy Czar Josué Colón Ortiz, New Fortress Energy (NFE) CEO Wes Edens said the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority (PREPA) currently owes NFE over $9 million in unpaid invoices and $3 million in interest on those invoices.
“On June 16, we made clear to PREPA that if such amounts were not paid by June 23, 2025 NFE would suspend gas deliveries, as it is entitled to under the FSPA (agreement),” Edens said. “That letter and the corresponding invoices are attached. It is now past June 23 and PREPA has not paid the amounts due. As a result, NFE is suspending further deliveries of gas under the FSPA until these amounts are paid.”
NFE instructed the vessel that supplies liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Palo Seco and Puerto Nuevo to depart the island, leaving the base units and temporary generation plants in the metropolitan area without gas supplies, according to various media outlets.
Colón Ortiz, who was in Salinas on Sunday to lead an inspection of the repair work being carried out at Aguirre Central’s Unit 2, announced a press conference for after press time.
The news comes after a week in which the contracts held by troubled NFE in Puerto Rico, which provide significant financial support, are under considerable threat.
The Financial Oversight and Management Board recently rejected a new LNG supply contract between Genera PR, the private operator of Puerto Rico’s legacy power plants, and NF Energía, both subsidiaries of NFE. Robert Mujica, the executive director of the oversight board, stated that the board
had insufficient time to evaluate the proposed $20 billion, 15-year contract. After an initial review, the board found inconsistencies in the request for proposal and noted a lack of market competition, arguing that the firm effectively holds a monopoly. However, the board agreed to a temporary extension of the current contract to ensure the continuity of services.
NF Energía submitted a bid to provide LNG for all generation plants, while Crowley LNG Puerto Rico LLC proposed supplying LNG to the generation plant in Mayagüez. Colón Ortiz expressed concerns over the oversight board’s actions, pointing out that since May 2018, NFE has had a contract for leasing facilities at the Puerto Nuevo port for a LNG fuel handling facility. Mujica indicated that the oversight board had never evaluated or approved that contract, which was signed in 2018 by NF Energía and former Ports Director Anthony Maceira.
To make matters worse, Rep. José Aponte Hernández announced Sunday that he will initiate an investigation into the 2018 contract awarded to NFE.
“This is an issue we have been addressing since 2017 when we argued that the contract was a poor deal for Puerto Rico,” the former House speaker said. “The statements by [...] Mujica suggesting that they did not evaluate the contract warrant our attention, along with the entire process related to the status and eventual awarding of this contract for such an important port facility over two decades. We will review records, market assessments, and feasibility studies, among other documents.”
Aponte pointed out that he has warned since 2017 that the 2018 contract would establish a gas monopoly in Puerto Rico. “In the coming days, the House Committee on Federal and Veterans Affairs [chaired by Aponte] will start requesting information from all relevant parties -- the [oversight] board, the Ports Authority, and the Electric Power Authority, among others -- to thoroughly understand the studies and processes that led to an agreement detrimental to our people.”
Additionally, the Puerto Rico Energy Bureau dealt a setback to NFE by rejecting changes to the contract held by its subsidiary, Genera. The Energy Bureau declined an amendment to Genera’s contract that aimed to eliminate an incentive scheme, instead opting for an advance payment of $110 million, payable in 11 installments. The changes would have favored Genera due to challenges in proving its entitlement to bonuses.
Moreover, the government chose not to award NFE a contract for 800 megawatts (MW) of temporary power, handing the contract to a firm called Power Expectations instead. The commonwealth appeals court subsequently halted the contract for the 800 MW of temporary energy after some proponents challenged it. Last week, Colón Ortiz announced he would issue a
tender
contract.

District 6 (Guayama) Sen. Rafael
“Rafy” Santos Ortiz expressed his gratitude on Sunday to Gov. Jenniffer González Colón for signing Senate Bill 428 into law, which is now Law 50-2025 . The measure, authored by Santos Ortiz along with Sens. Luis Daniel Colón
more than a means of transportation; it has been an engine of development for its users and the communities it serves,” Menéndez Agosto said.
The Puerto Rico Lottery Bureau, meanwhile, began the year with solid sales growth, driven by a strategy that combines new products and technology, thereby ensuring stable revenue allocated to social programs that directly benefit citizens islandwide, Hernández Olivo noted.
The success of the Jurassic Park instant game stands out, generating more than $1.3 million in sales in just four weeks. Its second chance through the app has motivated more than 30,000 registrations and 16,000 new downloads, confirming the impact of the innovations.
In the area of modernization, the entity continued to expand the PlayCentral machines, now present in 105 locations, achieving a 3% increase in sales.
The cashless system will soon be
launched, allowing people to play with Apple Pay or an ATM card at more than 2,500 terminals. This year, the Electronic Lottery celebrates its 35th anniversary with a tour of several municipalities.
Other announcements at Sunday’s weekly press briefing included a $1.1 million public-private partnership in which the Police Bureau received 13 new patrol vehicles equipped with advanced technology to enhance road safety in Puerto Rico; the appointment by Gov. Jenniffer González Colón of David Figueroa Betancourt, a recognized rights defender, academic and community leader, as the new ombudsman for people with disabilities; and orientation seminars offered by Transportation and Public Works Secretary Edwin González Montalvo for mayors throughout the island with the aim of strengthening collaboration between the central government and municipalities, and serving as a platform for discussion and cooperation.
La Santa (Humacao District) and Héctor J. Sánchez (Carolina District), declares the month of September of each year as “Unwanted or Chronic Loneliness Awareness Month in Puerto Rico” and the 25th of that month as “Unwanted or Chronic Loneliness Awareness Day.”
The senator emphasized that the legislation seeks to educate, raise awareness, and promote the development of programs that address the consequences of chronic loneliness, especially in vulnerable populations such as older adults, young people, and people with mental health conditions.
“The scientific evidence is clear: unwanted loneliness is linked to increased risks of depression, cognitive decline, and even suicide,” Santos Ortiz said. “With this designation, we seek to articulate responses through public policy and the development of programs that prioritize emotional well-being and community integration.”
“Thanks to the Governor’s signa-
ture, today Puerto Rico joins the global effort to make unwanted loneliness visible as a public health issue,” he added. “This law is a vital step toward raising awareness, breaking stigmas, and promoting public policies and initiatives aimed at addressing the emotional and social isolation faced by thousands of people in our communities.”
Santos Ortiz expressed his gratitude for the support of his fellow co-authors and the various professional, community, and mental health sectors that contributed to the development of the measure. He also reaffirmed his commitment to continue promoting legislation with a human focus that responds to the social and emotional challenges affecting citizens in Puerto Rico.
“Unwanted loneliness is combated with presence, listening, and action,” the senator said. “This new law is a call to empathy, solidarity, and to building a Puerto Rico where no one feels invisible.”

Popular Democratic Party (PDP) President Pablo
José Hernández Rivera and Secretary General
Manuel Calderón Cerame welcomed Ada Ramona Miranda Alvarado and Eric Armando Rossner Marrero to party headquarters in Puerta de Tierra over the weekend.
The two are former members of the Puerto Rican Independence Party (PIP) and the Citizens’ Victory Movement (MVC), respectively, and they announced their official entry into the PDP as part of the party’s refoundation process.
During the meeting, Hernández Rivera emphasized that “the refoundation is about adding new people to the PDP.”
“People recognize that there is a change in the Popular Party, that the Alliance has failed, and that we
are the only ones who can defeat the NPP [New Progressive Party],” the PDP president and island resident commissioner said. “We have no doubt that we will achieve this in 2028 through a winning alliance like the one we created in the ‘Everyone to Washington’ campaign, which received the most votes in Puerto Rico.”
Miranda Alvarado, a former PIP municipal assembly member in Salinas, coffee grower and university professor, stated that her decision reflects the openness and inclusion she has found within the PDP and its refoundation, “and that is important to me.”
Rossner Marrero, who previously ran for the District 11 seat in the House of Representatives under the MVC banner, said his decision was the result of a thorough analysis of the island’s political situation and discussions with PDP Sen. Ada Álvarez Conde.

The Municipality of Cataño announced over the weekend the acquisition of three modern school buses with the capacity to transport up to 60 students per unit, as part of its commitment to the education and well-being of Cataño’s children.
The new 2026 model buses are equipped with air conditioning and, starting in August, will offer the customary free school transportation service for students attending the municipality’s public schools.
The municipal investment totals $554,850, with an individual cost of $184,950 per bus. The buses replace the previous vehicles, raising the standard of safety, comfort, and accessibility for students and their families.
“These buses represent much more than a vehicle; they are a direct investment for our children and youth,” Mayor Julio Alicea Vasallo said. “In Cataño, we continue
to take firm steps to ensure our community has access to decent and modern services, regardless of the cost. Free school transportation is part of our policy of social justice and equity.”
The town’s school transportation service remains operational throughout the academic year and has been instrumental in facilitating access to education, especially for students from vulnerable communities, the municipality’s first lady Bethzaida Rodríguez Torres noted.
“For many parents, this service represents relief and peace of mind,” she said. “Knowing that their children arrive safely to school and return home in modern and comfortable vehicles is part of our commitment to the families of Cataño.”
The school buses were presented at the Cataño Convention Center during the municipality’s annual Back to School event, where hundreds of students receive free backpacks and school supplies for their return to school in August, while enjoying family time with children’s characters.

Alternate speaker of the Puerto Rico House of Representatives Wilson Román López highlighted on Sunday “the excellent work of our dear young workers, from District 17 (Aguadilla and Moca), who participated very actively, with great enthusiasm and commitment in our program of the Lower House.”
“We received in our district office, for the last time, the young people who participated in the experience of our Puerto Rico House of Representatives, as part of our summer employment,” he said.
“The young people were part of our office throughout the month of June and were able to know, in more depth, the different functions and tasks,” the legislator noted. “They also had the opportunity to carry out community work and participated in educational workshops of different government agencies.”
Román López emphasized that “for us, the early integration of young people into the work environment is a key factor for their personal, professional and social development.”
“It is not only about obtaining income, but also about acquiring skills, values and experiences that mark their future,” he said. “Working, from an early age, allows young people to learn practical skills such as responsibility, punctuality, teamwork,
effective communication and problem solving. Entering the world of work helps them discover their interests, strengths and areas for improvement, guiding them in the choice of a suitable career or vocation. It also encourages responsibility and independence. By assuming work commitments , young people begin to value effort and discipline, which strengthens their emotional maturity and sense of responsibility.”

With a poke from his pitchfork, Joe Espinoza found the red door of an old Chrysler and wondered if the entire car was buried beneath it, in the mud. He called to his wife and two friends, fellow volunteers from Kerrville, Texas, who were searching the Guadalupe River flood plain for neighbors who were swept away by the July 4 deluge.
The four volunteers bent low and pried the door free. Underneath, they found only more mud.
It has gone that way often for the army of searchers hunting for more than 100 people who are still missing along the Guadalupe. More than 2,100 search workers from 12 states have descended on Kerr County, Texas, said Sgt. Jonathan Lamb of the Kerrville Police Department, including public workers from Nebraska, Louisiana, Virginia and even Mexico. Indiana sent people from 15 fire and police departments.
Then there are volunteer groups, dozens of them from across the country, some who received donations for private flights into Kerrville-Kerr County Airport to begin searching as quickly as possible.
It is painstaking work, full of disappointments like the Chrysler door.
“You think you find something that might help someone, a body, or just a driver’s license,” said Evan Cervantes, 34, who joined Espinoza in the search Thursday after their shifts as psychiatric nursing assistants at Kerrville State Hospital. “But then you find nothing.”
But there is also solidarity in the struggle.
“It’s overwhelming to see so many people come and help in the search,” said Amy Vanlandingham, 38, a Kerrville resident who spent hours Thursday searching along the river. “This is our town. I do it so I can sleep.”
The search for human remains is focused on an area of Texas that is unlike many of the places where recovery professionals are accustomed to looking, several experts said. Most major search operations in recent years have happened in large urban areas hit by hurricanes, said Robert J. Koester, a search-and-rescue researcher who works with the Virginia Department

in Kerrville with Mini, her black Labrador retriever, and Kodak, her golden retriever. They walked into the wind, “letting the smells come to us,” said Pool, 49, who lives in Ardmore, Oklahoma, and volunteers with a nonprofit called Gideon Rescue Co. Mini paused, marking the scent of a cadaver. Pool notified the Kerrville Fire Department. Hours later, she returned with her dogs to search the opposite bank. Behind her, eight Kerrville firefighters paddled across the river in a blue inflatable raft, carrying the remains that Mini had found. Mini did not pause to watch. Neither did Pool. Their search continued.
of Emergency Management, and Scott Hammond, a professor in the Department of Management at Utah State University who studies search-and-rescue teams.
In the flood plain of central Texas, by comparison, searchers are dealing with a relatively high number of people who are missing and presumed dead, spread across an expanse of mostly narrow, rural territory, spanning more than 100 miles of shallow valleys along the river.
The destructive power arrived with little notice, in a relatively constrained river valley where there are few homes or other buildings to serve as likely search targets. The recovery efforts are therefore focused on the massive piles of debris.
That will continue to make the search especially slow, dangerous, painstaking and long.
“This effort in Texas will go on for some time,” said Hammond, a canine search handler who is part of the Utah County Sheriff Search and Rescue team.
Since the disaster, many have asked whether local officials responded quickly enough to warn people that floods were imminent. In the aftermath, rescuers and experts have said that the search effort had been well organized and efficient. In Kerrville, most teams gather every morning at the Kerr County Emergency Operations
Center or at a satellite location to receive orders for the day. Some volunteers said they also coordinated with the Salvation Army.
Leaders meet with searchers when they return, Hammond said, who has used social media to track searchers’ accounts of the process. The organizers debrief about what they found, use that information to plan for the next day and then explain why those next steps are important, he said.
Along the Guadalupe River this past week, the searchers were as varied as their tools. An official order grounded privately operated drones for much of the week to prevent them from crashing into helicopters. Then a no-fly zone was declared Friday as President Donald Trump arrived to survey the damage.
That left Jordy Marks, owner of LA Drone in Lafayette, Louisiana, only one day to fly. He got an early start Thursday and flew until sunset, inspecting 20 miles of the Guadalupe River with a drone capable of spotting individual stones in a gravel pile from 1,000 feet away.
“We can go under fallen trees, right along the top of the river,” Marks said. “I’m just trying to cover as much ground as possible.”
Meredith Pool spent Wednesday morning scouring the east bank of the river

Thousands of new deportation agents deployed into American cities. A doubling of detention space to hold tens of thousands of immigrants before they are expelled. Miles of new border wall, along with surveillance towers equipped with artificial intelligence.
That is the expansive plan that President Donald Trump’s top immigration officials now intend to enact after months of struggling to overcome staffing shortages and logistical hurdles that have stymied his pledge to record the most deportations in American history.
After weeks of pressuring members of Congress into supporting his signature domestic policy legislation, Trump has secured an extraordinary injection of funding for his immigration agenda — $170 billion, the vast majority of which will go to the Department of Homeland Security over four years.
The annual budget of Immigration and Customs Enforcement alone will spike from about $8 billion to roughly $28 billion, making it the highest funded law enforcement agency in the federal government.
The new resources will fuel an intense initiative to recruit as many as 10,000 agents who will have a presence in cities including New York and Los Angeles, and throughout the United States. And the money comes as a windfall for private prison companies, who have rushed to pitch the administration on new contracts to run detention facilities.
“You’re going to see immigration enforcement on a level you’ve never seen it before,” Tom Homan, Trump’s border czar, said in an interview.
The massive infusion of funds is raising worries that in the rush to make good on Trump’s pledged immigration crackdown, his administration could cut corners on the careful vetting needed to hire deportation officers. And immigration advocates say they are bracing for more masked agents to descend upon local communities with heavy-handed tactics.
“There’s an incredible sense of dread, frankly,” said Chris Newman, legal director and general counsel for the National Day Laborer Organizing Network, which represents day laborer groups across the country.
So far, he said, Trump has tried to expand his power over immigration through executive actions, some of which have been blocked by the courts. “But this is legislation, signed into law, and gives people an impression of a sense of permanence, which is ominous,” Newman said.
No matter what, the budget increase will leave a Trump imprint on the American immigration system for years to come, according to current and former immigration officials.
“This is the missing piece in mass deportations that the administration needed,” said Andrea Flores, who directed border management for the National Security Council in the Biden White House. “What this signals is a new level of funding for immigration enforcement nationally that likely changes it forever even if Democrats come into power.”
The legislation sets aside roughly $30 billion to bolster immigration enforcement through 2029, money that the administration says will fund the hiring of 10,000 ICE agents. That would bring the total number of deportation officers to 16,000,
surpassing the roughly 13,700 special agents at the FBI.
“You’re going to see more agents on the street,” Homan said, adding that the administration planned to ramp up migrant arrests in cities, in immigration courts and at worksites.
With the surge of agents, he added, the administration could also target more foreigners who overstay their visas, who immigration experts have said account for a significant portion of those without legal status in the United States.
Identifying and hiring thousands of qualified agents will not be easy. Some former immigration officials warn that the administration could feel pressure to cut corners on safeguards such as background checks and training to speed the process. When the United States has rushed in the past to surge hiring to federal law enforcement agencies, such as the Bush administration’s quick expansion of the Border Patrol, the government was plagued with cases of misconduct, they noted.
“There’s going to be a lot of people who are ill-suited to be a law enforcement officer and apply for one of these jobs,” said John Sandweg, a former acting director of ICE in the Obama administration. “I think you’re going to see them pushing and bending every rule they can to get them on the streets as soon as possible.”
Tim Quinn, a former senior official in Customs and Border Protection, said the rapid expansion of the immigration agencies makes accountability mechanisms even more essential. But the administration this year took steps to dismantle the watchdog agencies inside the Department of Homeland Security, the parent agency of ICE.
“You got now an agency that has a high influx of resources; what are the oversight capabilities?” said Quinn, who resigned in protest of one of Trump’s anti-diversity, equity and inclusion directives this year. “Where does that come from?”
Homan said that the administration planned to move both quickly and responsibly.
“We want to try to speed up as quickly as we can without sacrificing any of the rules that we have in place that are necessary,” Homan said, adding that officials were planning on expanding the footprint of the ICE academy. “We don’t want to hire the wrong people.”
Homan says one of his top priorities is an expansion of detention capacity, an issue that has long been a challenge for the federal government. ICE often has to hold immigrants for weeks or even months given a limited number of deportation planes, backlog in immigration courts and inconsistent diplomatic agreements with other nations that take deportees.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement was funded in recent years to hold more than 41,000 immigrants in custody, primarily in private facilities and some county jails. The agency is already buckling under the pressure of increased enforcement this year, holding about 58,000 immigrants as of this month, according to internal data. Immigration advocates have raised concerns about overcrowded detention facilities, with some immigrants going a week or more without showers and others sleeping on bare floors.
On a recent day, Homan said, the agency only had about 200 open beds to hold detained immigrants.
The new law includes $45 billion for immigration detention, allowing ICE to expand its footprint to 100,000 beds across
the United States. Homan said he hoped to reach that mark by the end of the year.
Private prison companies stand to benefit greatly from the expansion, with the ability to ramp up detention quickly. Homan said the administration had received outreach from companies interested in new contracts.
Immigrant advocates say the swift upscaling in detention could lead to dangerous conditions.
“They don’t have the beds to detain the numbers this funding equates to, so there is going to be a rush to set up hasty, makeshift prisons, with subpar conditions and infrastructure,” said Robyn Barnard, senior director of refugee advocacy at Human Rights First. “A humanitarian calamity in waiting.”
Tricia McLaughlin, a spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security, pushed back on any criticism of the potential surge in ICE deployments and said more attention should be paid to the challenges that agents face. She also defended the standards of ICE detention facilities. “ICE is regularly audited and inspected by external agencies to ensure that all ICE facilities comply with performance-based national detention standards,” McLaughlin said.
The law also includes more than $4 billion to hire and train Customs and Border Protection officials, even though Trump has deployed the military to the border and illegal crossings remain low.
In addition, Trump will have more than $46 billion for border wall construction and billions more to finance new applications of AI.
The administration is also getting a more than $3 billion boost for the immigration courts, a system that has long been riddled with delays and staffing shortages. Both Democrats and Republicans have agreed over the years that the small workforce of judges needs support for the overall immigration system to truly be repaired. But immigration experts question whether the extra funding for additional judges and support staff will be enough to help a system overwhelmed with more than 3.5 million cases.
In order to pay for the investments in Trump’s domestic agenda, Congress imposed cuts to Medicaid and the social safety net. Immigrants will now have to pay a 1% tax to send money back to family and friends in their home countries and $100 to apply for asylum. Those asylum-seekers will have to pay an additional $100 annually while they wait for a decision on their application. They would pay roughly $800 more than they pay now to appeal a rejection of their application. Entire classes of legal immigrants, including refugees, will also now be ineligible for Medicare and food stamps.

Mexican officials have been negotiating for months in hopes of reaching a trade deal with Washington that would not devastate the country’s export-driven economy, but President Donald Trump upended those talks Saturday when he threatened to impose a 30% tariff on Mexican imports, potentially igniting a trade war with one of America’s largest trading partners.
In a letter to Mexico’s president, Claudia Sheinbaum, Trump said that Mexico was not doing enough to curb the flow of fentanyl into the United States and cited that as the reason for the tariffs. Trump added that Mexican companies were welcome to manufacture their products in the United States to avoid the tariffs.
The tariffs are set to take effect on Aug. 1 and are similar to the levies that the United States is imposing on imports from Canada and the European Union, which Trump said separately on Saturday would also face 30% duties. The tariffs come despite the fact that Trump brokered a trade deal with Mexico and Canada during his first term that was intended to stabilize economic relations between the United States and its neighbors.
Trump also warned Mexico not to retaliate with higher tariffs of its own. He said that whatever additional tariffs Mexico might impose would be added to the 30% rate he announced.
The president added that drugs were not the only issue of concern to the United States and pointed to other Mexican policies that contributed to “unsustainable” trade deficits.

Microsoft said last week that it planned to give more than $4 billion in cash and technology services to train millions of people to use artificial intelligence, amid an intensifying Silicon Valley crusade to embed chatbots into classrooms.
Microsoft, the maker of the Copilot chatbot, said the resources would go to schools, community colleges, technical colleges and nonprofits. The company is also starting a new training program, Microsoft Elevate Academy, to “deliver AI education and skilling at scale” and help 20 million people earn certificates in AI.
“Microsoft will serve as an advocate to ensure that students in every school across the country have access to AI education,” Brad Smith, the president of Microsoft, said in an interview Sunday.
Microsoft did not immediately specify how much of the more than $4 billion the company planned to dispense as grants and how much of it would be in the form of Microsoft AI services and cloud computing credits.
The announcement comes as tech companies are racing to train millions of teachers and students on their new AI tools.
Even so, researchers say it is too soon to tell whether the classroom chatbots will end up improving educational outcomes or eroding important skills like critical thinking.
On Tuesday, the American Federation of Teachers, a union representing 1.8 million members, said it was setting up a national AI training center for educators, with $23 million in funding from Microsoft and two other chatbot makers, OpenAI and Anthropic.
Last week, several dozen companies — including Amazon, Apple, Google, Meta, Microsoft, Nvidia and OpenAI — signed a White House pledge promising to provide schools with funding, technology and training materials for AI education. In 2023, Amazon announced a new company program, “AI Ready,” to provide free online Amazon AI skills courses for 2 million people.
Before Microsoft’s new AI training campaign, the tech giant worked for more than a decade to boost computer science education in schools, including lobbying for new state education laws. Microsoft also funded nonprofit education groups like Code.org; its “Hour of Code” lessons have been used by tens of millions of schoolchildren around the world.
Now that AI tools can generate computer code, tech companies that were once big coding boosters are pivoting to
Mexican imports. Mexican officials warned that the import tax would cause food shortages in the United States and called it a “strategic mistake.”
Later, he exempted goods that trade under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, the trade pact Trump negotiated in his first term. Currently, because of that USMCA exemption, about 87% of Mexican exports to the U.S. trade tariff free, according to data from the Mexican government.
A White House official who wasn’t authorized to speak publicly said Saturday that Trump’s new tariffs on Mexico would replace, rather than add to, the previous levies that the president imposed on the country, and that goods that trade under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement will likely be exempt.
The Mexican economy minister, Marcelo Ebrard, who is leading a Mexican delegation in Washington to discuss issues on border security, migration and trade, said U.S. officials told their Mexican counterparts that, “as part of the profound change in the United States’ trade policy,” the Trump administration was going to send letters to all world leaders announcing new tariffs.
“We mentioned at the negotiating table that it was an unjust move and that we did not agree with it,” Ebrard said in a statement posted on social media Saturday.
Mexican officials said that they would work to ensure that, before the new tariffs take effect on Aug. 1, “we have an alternative that allows us to protect businesses and jobs on both sides of the border.”

chatbots. As part of Microsoft’s announcement Wednesday, the company said it was backing a new Code.org program called “Hour of AI.”
“Coding changed the work of software developers, but it didn’t change every occupation and profession, or the work of every professional, the way AI probably will,” Smith said. “So we need to move faster for AI than we did for computer science.”

Stocks this week largely shrugged off President Donald Trump’s threats of more aggressive tariffs on over 20 countries set to take effect August 1. Trump also announced plans for higher levies on copper, pharmaceuticals and semiconductors.
“Investors are looking toward the end of the year into next year where fundamentals are better, and they are willing to look through some short-term uncertainty as they get there,” said Chris Fasciano, chief market strategist at Commonwealth Financial Network.
After a strong first-quarter reporting season helped lift stocks, analyst estimates for second-quarter results have weakened. S&P 500 companies are expected to have increased profits by 5.8% from the year-earlier period, down from an expectation of a 10.2% gain on April 1, according to LSEG IBES.
The percentage of S&P 500 companies beating consensus estimates rose to 78% in the first quarter after the rate had declined the prior three quarters, Ned Davis Research analysts said.
“Another reading in the upper 70s would suggest that companies have a grasp not only on tariffs, but also on the broader macro environment,” the Ned Davis analysts said in a note.
Reports from banks will dominate the week, including results from JPMorgan Chase (JPM.N), Bank of America (BAC.N), and Goldman Sachs (GS.N), Among the other major companies reporting next week are Netflix (NFLX.O), Johnson & Johnson (JNJ.N), and 3M (MMM.N).
In focus will be whether executives indicate if they are able to forecast and make decisions in areas such as capital investment and hiring despite the still-shifting trade backdrop, Fasciano said.
“The uncertainty hasn’t gone away, but I’m curious to see how much of the uncertainty they feel they have a
better understanding of in terms of longer-term plans,” Fasciano said.
The impact of tariffs will also be at issue with the consumer price index for June, due on Tuesday, which will shed light on inflation trends. CPI is expected to increase 0.3% on a monthly basis, an acceleration from the prior month, according to economists polled by Reuters. A busy week of economic data will also be highlighted by monthly retail sales on Thursday.
Investors are eager for the Federal Reserve to resume interest rate cuts, but central bank officials have cited worries that tariffs will drive inflation higher as reasons for holding off on changing monetary policy.
The S&P 500 is up nearly 7% in 2025, just over halfway through the year. In the latest sign of positive stock momentum, Nvidia Corp (NVDA.O), this week became the first publicly traded company to hit $4 trillion in market value, fueled by a massive
run for AI chipmaker’s stock price.
Stocks have rebounded after plunging in April following Trump’s “Liberation Day” announcement of sweeping global tariffs.
This past Wednesday was expected to be a key deadline, marking the end of Trump’s pause on many of the harsh “reciprocal” tariffs he unveiled in April. This week, he launched an array of levies, many scheduled to take effect on August 1.
Still, most investors appear to be banking on the U.S. avoiding higher tariff rates as Washington strikes deals in coming weeks with trading partners such as Japan and South Korea, said Anthony Saglimbene, chief market strategist at Ameriprise Financial.
“That’s what the market has built in,” Saglimbene said. “If we don’t get that, then I think there is probably some risk that we would see some higher near-term volatility if the White House actually implements some of these aggressive tariff measures.”

Officials in Texas are under scrutiny for a string of refusals to fund early warning systems for flash floods in an area where sudden, intense rainfall is frequent.
Those measures could have included river gauges and warning sirens that could have alerted people that their lives were in imminent danger. The floods that raged down the Guadalupe River eight days ago killed at least 121 people, including at least 36 children.
But global experts in early warning systems said there are few examples of places around the world that have mastered the choreography of forecasting and communication needed to prevent loss of life in extreme rainstorms. And in many cases, like in Texas this month, accurate forecasting alone is not enough to prevent calamity.
“Flash floods are the hardest kind of disaster to prevent,” said Erin Coughlan de Perez, who studies disaster risk management at Tufts University in Massachusetts. She said that both rich and poor countries have grappled with funding for systems that ultimately either fail or create enough false alarms to erode public confidence.
For instance, in Valencia, Spain, a lack of sufficient warnings contributed to a catastrophe where more than 200 people died in flash floods last year. An alert system was in place, but was not activated until it was too late.
“When the alert came, my grandpa had already drowned,” one resident told The New York Times.
“There’s a major ‘cry wolf’ issue because flash floods are so hard to predict,” Coughlan de Perez said. “And they are pretty infrequent in most places, so it’s hard to motivate investment. But of course, with climate change, they are also getting stronger and more common.”
One country that experts agree has done a better job than others is Japan.
Japan is among the world’s most disaster-prone countries, primed for earthquakes, tsunamis, typhoons and more. And the nation’s steep mountain ridges, fast-flowing streams and heavy rains make flash flooding a particular threat.
Yet heavy investment in storm infrastructure and advanced early warning systems have helped Japan significantly curb
deaths from natural disasters.
Supercomputers, weather satellites and radar feed advanced weather forecasts and warnings that are then beamed within minutes to local television and radio networks, a network of loudspeakers, and cellphones. (J-Alert, an early warning system primarily used for quakes, tsunamis and North Korean missile alerts, but also for the most serious extreme weather events, is designed to send out nationwide alerts within seconds.)
Local municipalities are responsible for issuing evacuation orders and other directives, accompanied by the swift opening of evacuation centers at schools and other public buildings, which are supplied with futons and other emergency provisions.
But tragedies still occur, especially as climate change fuels more extreme weather. In 2020, 14 people perished in widespread flooding on the southern island of Kyushu after a botched evacuation at a nursing home, reflecting the challenges facing older populations.
Flooding in urban areas is also on the rise: In recent days, torrential rain in Tokyo inundated roads and disrupted train services. (No casualties have been reported.)
And the Japanese public risks becoming a victim of the country’s success in addressing disasters, said Yukiko Takeuchi,
a professor at Kumamoto University on Kyushu who specializes in regional disaster prevention. In a survey published in 2024, more than half of all municipalities said just 10% of residents complied with recent evacuation orders. For almost a quarter of municipalities, the evacuation rate was less than 1%.
“People who’ve been shielded from past disasters tend to assume they’ll be fine,” she said. “Then they risk getting stranded.”
The United Nations has set a target for the entire world to be covered by early warning systems for all kinds of natural disasters by the end of 2027. Right now, only about half of the world’s countries have implemented such systems, though that represents a near-doubling of the number over the past decade.
In Bangladesh, a low-lying country that sees some of the highest rainfall in the world, officials have been trying to improve their flash flood early warning systems for a quarter of a century, said Shampa, a hydrologist at the country’s Institute of Water and Flood Management, who goes by one name.
“We are able to tell people about three to five days ahead but so far still more than half of our warnings end up being false alarms,” she said.
The majority of the country’s flash floods originate across the border from hills
in India, necessitating close international cooperation. The government works with mosques, local community organizations and telecom providers to get urgent messaging out in as many ways as possible.
“But relying on text messages is hard because heavy rain often causes power cuts and people’s phone are not charged,” Shampa said. “And if they get the message, do they understand what a certain level or velocity of river means? Or what it means for their land in particular?”
Researchers in wealthier countries have partnered with governments in poorer ones, like Uganda, to try to expand the kind of high-tech systems that have higher success rates.
Liz Stephens, a professor in the meteorology department at the University of Reading in England, said researchers were working in Uganda, Nepal and elsewhere to use satellite monitoring to predict flash floods.
It was necessary in Uganda because some flash floods were so strong that rivers carried boulders along with them, crushing river gauges that had been installed.
And in Nepal, where some flash floods are caused by the collapse of lakes held back by glaciers, work is underway to understand better how those collapses are triggered. Last week, floods in Nepal washed away the main bridge connecting the country to China.
Most early warning systems are put into place only after disasters strike, Coughlan de Perez said. And responses often assume that the next disaster will look like the last, but with climate change intensifying, that is a shaky assumption.
“We’re driving forward while looking in the rearview mirror,” she said.

Seconds after takeoff and moments before an Air India flight crashed last month, the fuel was cut off to both engines of the plane, investigators said early Saturday, in a preliminary assessment of information from the Boeing 787’s voice and data recorders.
The narrowed focus on the fuel switches on Air India Flight 171 raised questions about the pilots’ actions and appeared to rule out mechanical failure or design flaws. The report said “there are no recommended actions” to the aircraft and engine manufacturers, Boeing and GE Aerospace.
“In the cockpit voice recording, one of the pilots is heard asking the other why did he cut off” the fuel, said the report, by India’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau. “The other pilot responded that he did not do so.”
The London-bound plane went down June 12, about 30 seconds after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in the western Indian city of Ahmedabad. All but one of the 242 people aboard were killed.
The plane rammed into the dining hall of a medical college before exploding in flames.
Altogether, 260 people were killed in the crash, including 19 on the ground, the report said. In the days immediately after the crash, with most of the bodies in such a damaged state that hundreds of DNA tests were required to verify identities, officials had given the overall death toll as at least 270.
The supply of fuel to the engine is controlled by two switches in the flight deck. Starting about 10 seconds after the fuel was cut off on Flight 171, the data re-
corder shows, the switches were moved to turn the fuel back on. But the plane could not gain power quickly enough to stop its descent.
Each switch is equipped with a locking mechanism that is supposed to prevent accidental movement, experts said. To turn the fuel supply on, the switch must be pulled outward and then moved to a “RUN” position, where it is released and settles back into a locked position. To turn the fuel supply off, the switch must be pulled outward again, moved to the “CUTOFF” position and then released again.
According to the report, the fuel control switches were turned off “one after another” about a second apart, and “the aircraft started to lose altitude before crossing the airport perimeter wall.”
Safety experts said it appeared unlikely that the switches were moved without human involvement, whether intentional or accidental.
The fuel switches have safeguards built around them to avoid any accidental switching off, said Shawn Pruchnicki, a former airline accident investigator and aviation expert at Ohio State University.
“For example, on the 787 and probably more airliners these days, the switches themselves — you can’t shut them off without actually lifting them up,” he
said. “So there’s a little mechanical gate built into the switch — you have to lift it up over this little gate. So you can’t just bump it.”
The flight’s captain was Sumeet Sabharwal, who had over 15,000 hours of flying experience, while 1st Officer Clive Kunder brought 3,400 hours of flying experience, Air India said. That is more experience than officials attributed to the pilots last month, when they estimated a combined experience of about 10,000 hours.
India’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau, the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board and Boeing have been trying to determine what caused Flight 171 to crash. The cockpit voice recorder and the flight data recorder, usually referred to as the black boxes, were recovered from the debris.
Although there was initial concern that the devices might have been damaged in the extreme heat of the fire, investigating teams managed to retrieve data from the boxes.
Video filmed by residents in nearby homes, as well as CCTV footage, show the plane struggling to gain lift immediately after taking off. A New York Times analysis of photos and videos suggested that the plane might have experienced a catastro-
phic loss of hydraulic, electrical or engine power.
“All international protocols have been respected and followed,” Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu, India’s civil aviation minister, told reporters Saturday. “Let’s not jump to any conclusions at this stage. Let us wait for the final report.”
It could take months, possibly years, to reach definitive conclusions. But as a member of the International Civil Aviation Organization, India was obliged to submit a preliminary investigative report within 30 days of the crash.
The preliminary report was inconclusive, and said the investigators will continue to “review and examine” further evidence.
It appeared to rule out one theory floated by experts, of fuel contamination. The report said a “very limited amount of fuel” could be retrieved from the aircraft, which exploded into flames, and tests on those samples would continue. But lab tests on samples taken from “the bowsers and tanks used to refuel the aircraft” had found the fuel “satisfactory.”
The report not recommending any action to the aircraft and engine manufacturers, three weeks after data was decoded, was seen by experts as an indication of no obvious sign of mechanical failure or design flaws. That would have prompted urgent communication to manufacturers to check other aircraft.
The report, however, noted that the Federal Aviation Administration had issued a bulletin in 2018 recommending that airlines inspect the fuel control switches on the 787 and other Boeing jets amid reports that some may have been installed with the locking mechanism disengaged.
But the FAA did not rule that to be an unsafe condition at the time, the report said. The switches on the Air India plane were replaced by 2023, with no defects reported since. And, by that time, the manufacturer would have almost certainly inspected the part to ensure the locking mechanism was engaged, said John Cox, a former airline pilot and CEO of Safety Operating Systems, a consulting firm.
In a statement, Air India said it had received the preliminary report but could not comment on “specific details” mentioned “given the active nature of the investigation.”

When future historians study the arc of American foreign policy, they will probably fold all the major events since 2020 — our pell-mell withdrawal from Afghanistan, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and Israel’s conflicts in Gaza, Lebanon and Iran — into a unified narrative of global conflict.
If we’re fortunate, that will yield academic treatises with titles like “The Empire Tested: America and the World, 2021-2030.” If we’re unlucky — meaning, basically, if the United States and China eventually fall into a ruinous war — then the struggles in Ukraine and the Middle East will be retroactively assigned to histories of World War III.
We are not, as yet, inside that kind of conflagration. But it’s useful for Americans to think about our situation in global terms, with Russia and Iran and China as a revisionist alliance putting our imperial power to the test. And it’s also important to recognize that this kind of conflict is an endurance test, a long and winding road, in which it’s easy to fall prey to mood swings and judge the outcome prematurely.
We’ve had a lot of these swings in the last few years. In 2021 and early 2022, the rout in Afghanistan and our overpromising to a vulnerable Ukraine made America look ineffectual ... right up until Vladimir Putin actually
María
invaded his neighbor, at which point his military setbacks and our success in rallying support for the Ukrainians yielded a lot of chest-thumping about the superiority of liberal democracy and the permanence of American hegemony.
That optimistic mood lasted through the failure of Ukraine’s last major counteroffensive and the Hamas attacks of Oct. 7, 2023, against Israel, at which point there was a swing back toward pessimism. American power was stretched too thin; our Israeli allies were taken unawares by their enemies, the Russians were regaining ground, our arsenal was almost certainly inadequate to protect Ukraine and Israel and defend Taiwan, and all of this under a president debilitated by advancing age, a grim symbol of a crumbling imperium.
This sense of multi-theater crisis helped to restore Donald Trump to power. Then the initial months of his administration inspired fears that he would end the global conflict by effectively surrendering — abandoning allies and making deals with dictators while retreating to a Fortress North America.
Yet right now that’s not how the landscape looks. Trump’s decision to bomb the Iranian nuclear program and the muted Iranian response has capped off a period in which Tehran’s regional power has crumbled under sustained Israeli assault. Meanwhile, our NATO allies are boosting their military spending and Trump is suddenly praising the alliance, while Russia’s gains in Ukraine remain a punishing grind and there’s a possibility that Putin threw away the best deal he was likely to get. Add in the strength of the American economy, even amid the Trumpian trade war, and it seems that maybe we’re winning the world conflict again. “Rah-rah! Pax Americana forever!” OK, not quite. The damage to Iran’s nuclear program doesn’t mean we’ve eliminated the threat, and Israel’s Gaza war remains a humanitarian crisis without a clear political endgame. Trump’s walk-back of his Department of Defense’s attempt to triage resources by withholding weapons from Ukraine doesn’t change the reality that our weaponry is limited and does require triaging. Putin’s failure to make the most of Trump’s diplomatic outreach doesn’t change the fact that Russia is still slowly gaining ground.
But both the Ukrainian stalemate and the Iranian retreat are clarifying reminders that the ultimate outcome of this conflict depends on the revisionist power, the People’s Republic of China, that hasn’t directly joined the fights. China is at once a much more serious rival to America than either Russia or Iran and also an extremely cautious player, content to watch its tacit allies make their plays without, say, handing Iran a nuclear deterrent or sending the People’s Liberation Army to help Russia take Kyiv.
This cautious distance could reflect a fundamental weakness of the revisionist bloc — that it’s purely an alliance of interest between regimes that don’t trust one
The
of
and China
another, don’t have as much in common as we still have with our European and East Asian allies and struggle to work effectively in concert.
But it could also reflect a confidence on China’s part that time is on its side, that its investments in technology and energy are going to lap ours soon enough and that all our efforts now reflect a fateful squandering of resources given what Beijing has planned for the later 2020s.
Without certain knowledge of those plans, American foreign policy needs both a better long-term strategy to stay ahead of China and a lot of short-term Trumpian flexibility. Not restraint or hawkishness alone, but both an openness to peace and a capacity for warmaking, matched to the ebb and flow of a global conflict that won’t have any simple end.

By JILL LANGLOIS
Gilberto Gil had been living in exile for a month when he first saw Bob Dylan take the stage.
That was in August 1969, when Gil, who is now a revered international figure with a 60-year career behind him, had just turned 27. The military dictatorship in Brazil had “invited” him to leave the country after an arrest on charges of “inciting youth to rebel” during a show in Rio de Janeiro, among other accusations. Forced to flee, Gil chose London — a meeting point for musician and artist expats, with its vibrant cultural scene and artistic freedom — as his new home.
He arrived just in time for the Isle of Wight Festival and knew he couldn’t miss his chance to see Dylan play his first show since a motorcycle accident had nearly taken his life.
“It’s that passivity, almost,” Gil said in a recent interview. “That calmness he has onstage, without many exuberant gestures. That’s what I wanted to soak up and apply to my own performance.”
Through the years, whether his image was as an inciter of youth or an insightful philosopher, he did. Even as Gil stood onstage in São Paulo in April on his farewell tour, it was the eloquence of his words and the memories his music evoked that captivated 40,000 fans.
A chorus of voices accompanied Gil as he guided concertgoers through the many genres of his career — samba, baião, jazz, reggae, rock and international pop among them. An innovator with a knack for preserving his country’s classic styles while building on them, Gil has used both his music and his voice to help fellow Brazilians feel pride in where they come from and hope in where they’re going. In addition to releasing dozens of albums, he has worked in politics since 1987 and served as Brazil’s minister of culture from 2003 to 2008.
Gil, now 83, admits that it’s time to slow down.
He doesn’t shy away from talk about aging: It’s just another change in a life of metamorphosis. And the name he gave his final stadium tour — Tempo Rei (which translates to Time Is King), borrowed from his 1984 song about the passage of time, the brevity of life and the necessity of transformation — alludes to just that.
“The classifications of ‘last tour,’ ‘last chapter,’ ‘end of career’ are all valid,” he said. “I’m essentially on an excursion that will end a cycle that has lasted more than 60 years.”
But the decision to step away from live performance isn’t a step back from music, Gil insisted. It’s a way to reconnect with it.
“I’ll always have my guitar, my inseparable companion,” he said in a recent video interview from Rio, where he was taking a break between shows to spend time with family. “But my relationship with it will be more open, freer. It’s simpler when you don’t have as many commitments. I’ll have much more time to eventually get back to composing and maybe recording albums. My music will continue.”
Gil’s musical life began in the city of Salvador in northeastern Brazil, where as a child he first heard South African singer-songwriter and civil rights activist Miriam Makeba
Gilberto Gil performs at Central Park SummerStage in New York on June 18, 1995. At 83, the lauded Brazilian singer and songwriter whose career in music and politics has encompassed six decades is on a farewell tour called Tempo Rei (Time is King). (Monica Almeida/The New York Times)
while listening to records at a friend’s house. It sparked his interest in how African music gave life to some of his favorite Brazilian sounds, and provided an early link between music and politics.
Inspired by Afro Brazilian musician Luiz Gonzaga, known as the King of Baião, Gil began learning his first instrument — the accordion — and at 17, he joined a band called Os Desafinados (the Out-of-Tunes) and turned his attention to bossa nova, a subtle new style coming out of Rio de Janeiro with syncopated melodies and jazz-inflected harmonies.
“I think that because of the nature of how Brazilian music itself came to be, I belong to a group of artists who were highly influenced,” Gil said. “I was born into this melting pot of musicality.”
His alliance with Caetano Veloso, who became a fast friend when they were introduced in 1963 by producer Roberto Santana, would prove to be one of the most consequential of his career. Together with Veloso’s sister Maria Bethânia, Gal Costa, Tom Zé and members of the band Os Mutantes, they spearheaded a cultural movement called Tropicália, which challenged the political and social norms of their country, blending the Brazilian styles of their youth with foreign influences like pop and psychedelic rock. The music embraced ideas of unbridled personal freedom, and it inspired artists including David Byrne.
The military government did not approve of Gil and Veloso’s defiant playfulness, so they found themselves in London, where they remained for three years, a period he now recalls as bittersweet.
Gil released his acclaimed 1971 self-titled album there. He played the Glastonbury Festival and in concert halls across Europe, and deepened his knowledge of reggae and jazz.
Upon his return to Brazil, his music became omnivorous, partaking of rock, reggae and African music while delving into Brazil’s cornucopia of local styles.
“I think I heard Gilberto Gil before I even knew that
what I was hearing was Gilberto Gil,” said Brazilian pop singer Iza, 34, known for her Afrobeats and R&B-influenced pop songs. “He’s part of my family’s imagination, the creation of my musical identity. He made me see that Brazilian music, Black music, is noble. He helps us feel like we’re part of something and can love where we came from.”
But Gil wanted to put more than music out into the world. As a child, he had watched his father — a doctor by profession — dabble in local politics when the family lived in Ituaçu, a small rural town in the northeastern state of Bahia.
“I spent a period of my childhood living in that world, with citizens, candidates, voters,” he said. “And in a way it left its mark on my soul and in my conscience.”
When he ultimately became Brazil’s minister of culture, he created programs to boost the country’s cultural, artistic and ethnic diversity. It was a rewarding time, he said, but it came with sacrifice.
“There were at least 10 years where I had to divide my time between politics and music,” he said. “And music suffered. It was probably the most difficult time in my music career.”
Now he is ready to wind down a bit.
During the April show in São Paulo, Gil made sure to play all the crowd-pleasers — “Aquele Abraço” and “Andar com Fé” were must-haves — and added compositions that marked his own life-changing moments, like “Domingo no Parque,” a fixture in Brazilian culture since Gil performed it on TV in 1967 with Os Mutantes.
As images of his life appeared on the giant screens behind him — intimate snapshots of his family, historical photos of Afro Brazilian culture, portraits of his most important influences — Gil stood behind the microphone, a guitar in hand, and smiled.

On the outskirts of Greenville, North Carolina, thick smoke billowed from the pit beside B’s Barbecue, a squat storefront on the corner of N.C. Highway 43 and B’s Barbeque Road. It was just past 6:30 a.m. on a Saturday, and the sun was rising as I parked beneath an oak tree, where two of the three sisters who run the place, which was opened by their parents in the 1970s, were carrying potatoes from a shed.
I’d heard that if you wanted the off-menu ribs, you had to come early; they’d be sold out by the time B’s opened around 9 a.m.
“Morning!” I called. “Any chance of getting some ribs?”
“Half rack or full?” asked Tammy Godley, the middle sister. There’s no phone to call in an order at B’s, but there’s a list inside and my name was now on it.
Before 9 a.m., a line of people, most, if not all, of them locals, forms outside B’s Barbecue in Greenville, N.C., on June 12, 2025. The restaurant is one of the increasingly rare, old-school establishments that still cook barbecue the way it’s been made here for centuries: whole hogs, smoked low and slow over wood, served in a peppery, vinegar-based sauce. (Lauren Vied Allen/The New York Times)
Many visitors in this part of North Carolina, about 80 miles east of Raleigh, zip past the rural farmland and small towns en route to the Outer Banks beaches. But I’d stopped in Greenville, a lively college town beside the Tar River, in pursuit of the increasingly rare, old-school establishments that still cook barbecue the way it’s been made here for centuries: whole hogs, smoked low and slow over wood, served in a peppery, vinegar-based sauce.
This particular type of barbecue, known as “eastern North Carolina” style, was what I scoured the region for over the next couple of days, nearly eating my weight in pulled pork, coleslaw and hush puppies along the way.
Wood-smoked and heavy on the vinegar
“You can’t mention North Carolina without mentioning barbecue, period,” declared Sam Jones, a third-generation pit master and restaurant owner, when we spoke on the phone a week after my trip.
As someone who grew up in a state where “barbecue” was something you did with hot dogs and hamburgers on a backyard grill, my first taste of wood-smoked, hand-chopped pork was a revelation. Twenty years ago, when I moved to Durham, North Carolina, smack dab between the state’s two barbecue regions, most locals had a preference for either the eastern style or the western Piedmont style (also called Lexington style), where pork shoulders replace whole hogs and there’s ketchup in the vinegar sauce.
I pledged my allegiance to the east.
At Prime Barbecue in Knightdale, Longleaf Swine in Raleigh and Picnic in Durham — all casual-yet-polished restaurants — you can have a local craft beer with your pulled-pork sandwich. At the Pit, in Raleigh, there’s a wine list, signature cocktails and valet parking.
There was none of that at the humble, old-school joints I visited on my trip.
Ribs and sweet tea
When I returned to B’s Barbecue around 9:15 a.m., parked
Last year, the Grady couple was among the inaugural class of inductees to the North Carolina Bar-B-Q Hall of Fame, alongside two eastern North Carolina brethren: the Skylight Inn and Sam Jones BBQ.
Pulling into the gravel lot of the Skylight Inn BBQ in Ayden, with a population of just more than 5,100, I parked beside a sheriff’s cruiser (a sure sign of a top-notch barbecue joint, Reed said) from Pasquotank County, about two hours away.
Pete Jones opened this renowned barbecue destination in 1947, and today it’s run by his son Bruce and nephew Jeff. Atop the low-slung brick building sits a Capitol dome replica, installed in the early ’80s after the restaurant was named a “capital of ’cue” by National Geographic.
cars and dusty pickup trucks lined the road and a diverse local crowd in work boots, heels and sneakers waited to order. (Since the pandemic, B’s has been takeaway only.) Twenty minutes later, I walked away with a haul — a half-rack of ribs, a barbecue plate and sweet tea — that cost $18 and was enough to feed a family of hungry tailgaters. Despite the effort to secure the ribs (which were excellent), even better was the chopped barbecue: subtly smoky pork perfectly seasoned with punchy vinegar sauce. The flavor left no question as to how the hogs are cooked at B’s, a rare outlier still using wood.

Beside a shopping center on a busy thoroughfare, it’s a place where you’d expect to see a Bojangles or Biscuitville, not a restaurant with a smoking pit and woodpiles of Carolina oak in the parking lot. (Lauren Vied Allen/The New York Times)
“Most of the places in eastern North Carolina have switched to gas now, and the sad part is, a lot of people haven’t noticed,” lamented John Shelton Reed, a retired sociology professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and author of “Holy Smoke: The Big Book of North Carolina Barbecue.”
In an effort to educate the barbecue-eating public, Reed co-founded the Campaign for Real Barbecue to promote establishments that follow tradition: slow-cooking over wood or wood coals.
From B’s, it’s a winding hourlong drive southwest, past cotton fields and pig farms, to another old-timer: Grady’s BBQ in Dudley. Steve, now 90, and Geral Grady, 81, opened the modest white cinder block restaurant in 1986, where yellowed newspaper clippings and award plaques now adorn the walls. Like B’s, Grady’s is cash-only, but the handwritten menu includes more sides, like rice and gravy, potato salad and green beans, and there’s a dessert case with sweet-potato pie, pineapple cake and banana pudding. At a table inside, I tried a barbecue tray, with a generous pile of peppery chopped pork, sides of slaw and black-eyed peas, still-warm hush puppies and Grady’s Baby (a mix of lemonade and sweet tea).
“That’s one of the few remaining Black-owned places in the state,” Reed said. “There used to be a lot more. But who knows how much longer they’ll last.”
What continues to set this place apart is the long-standing tradition of chopping crisped skin into the barbecue, adding texture and crunch to every bite. The menu choices are few — either a sandwich or a tray of barbecue scooped into a red-and-white paper boat, topped with a thick slab of cornbread and a second boat of coleslaw. I chose the tray and a glass bottle of Cheerwine, a cherry-flavored North Carolina soda with not a drop of alcohol, which made for an outstanding lunch.
On the side: mac and cheese and black-eyed peas For dinner, I sought out Sam Jones BBQ, opened in 2015 by the grandson of the Skylight Inn founder, in nearby Winterville (a second location opened in Raleigh in 2021). Beside a shopping center on a busy thoroughfare, it’s a place where you’d expect to see a Bojangles or Biscuitville, not a restaurant with a smoking pit and woodpiles of Carolina oak in the parking lot.
Inside, the restaurant, with its high ceilings, smooth wooden booths, black-and-white family photos on the walls and a soundtrack heavy on George Strait’s ’90s hits, offers various meats and sides — the mac and cheese and smoky black-eyed peas were standouts — as well as craft beers and boozy cocktails, the inclusion of which caused quite a dust-up initially.
“My dad’s a Baptist preacher, and he refused to come in the first four months I was open,” Sam Jones said, chuckling. I couldn’t not try the Cheerwine-and-bourbon slushie, which was delicious. But that’s not the point of the place, which is the barbecue, as proven by the sublime sandwich on a soft potato roll named after Sam’s granddad. The slow-cooked pork, flecked with crisp bits of skin, is done exactly as it’s always been done at the Skylight Inn, lightly dressed in an apple-cider-vinegar sauce with salt, pepper and Texas Pete, a red-pepper hot sauce.
While I’d traveled in search of the dwindling number of singular, old-school establishments, I left with hope for the region’s long-standing culinary traditions.

By KEN ROSENTHAL / THE ATHLETIC
In February, shortly after the start of spring training in West Palm Beach, Florida, Joe Espada, the manager of the Houston Astros, asked Cam Smith to address his new teammates.
Omar López, the bench coach, recalled the talk vividly. It gave him goose bumps. And it brought back memories of an Astros rookie who once stunned the team with his poise and eloquence, Carlos Correa.
The occasion was Smith’s 22nd birthday. It was a little more than two months after the Chicago Cubs sent him to the Astros as the centerpiece of the Kyle Tucker trade and a little more than seven months after the Cubs drafted him No. 14 overall out of Florida State.
Espada surprised Smith by inviting Scott Benedict, an assistant baseball coach at nearby Palm Beach Central High School, where Smith played, to talk about the player’s path. Smith, in a room full of major league veterans, did not act nervous. In the words of first baseman Christian Walker, “He wasn’t trying to be a tough guy or put up a front.”
When Smith spoke, he was sincere.
“I just talked about how I had the best time playing in Low-A ball because it was all Latin players,” Smith said, recalling his 15 games last season with the Cubs’ Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, affiliate.
Mauricio Dubón, a utility player from Honduras, smiled as he recalled his reaction to hearing Smith’s eagerness to mix with his Latin teammates.
“We have a lot of those,” Dubón said. “He’s going to fit right in.”
Smith has done just that, in ways that are
almost unimaginable.
Jacob Wilson, the Athletics’ All-Star shortstop, is the early front-runner for American League Rookie of the Year. Smith, however, is excelling while facing a greater degree of difficulty.
He played only 32 games in the minor leagues. He learned right field in the final two weeks of spring training. After some initial struggles offensively, he has moved from the bottom of the order to the top while the Astros await the return of Yordan Álvarez. Smith has even batted cleanup for the first time professionally in nine games and thrived in that spot.
Before the season began, Fangraphs projected the Astros, Texas Rangers and Seattle Mariners to win 84 to 85 games, making the AL West practically a dead heat. Nearing the All-Star break, the Astros are on a 96-win pace with a comfortable lead in their division.
That’s despite trading Tucker and reliever Ryan Pressly, losing third baseman Alex Bregman to free agency, placing six starting pitchers on the injured list and playing without Alvarez, their leading slugger, since May 2.
Smith, batting .286 with seven homers and a .779 on-base plus slugging percentage, is a big reason the Astros’ offense remains above average. So is another player general manager Dana Brown acquired for Tucker, third baseman Isaac Paredes. (The third player in the deal, right-hander Hayden Wesneski, is one of the injured starting pitchers; in May, he had Tommy John surgery.)
To Espada, Smith’s emergence began the day he spoke to the club.
“It’s a clubhouse full of veteran guys, winners, MVPs, batting champions, Silver Sluggers,” Espada said. “It can be a very in-

timidating room for anyone.
“It was not exactly what he said, but the way that he said it. You could see how genuine he was. His humility. His confidence. His presence. You could just tell this kid was going to be a star, based on watching the eyes of the crowd that he was talking to.
“I’m like, ‘OK, we’ve got something special.’”
In the spring of 2022, longtime Astros star José Altuve offered a surprising assessment of Jeremy Peña, the rookie shortstop who was replacing Correa.
“He’s going to be a superstar,” Altuve said. “I can tell by his attitude. He cares. He wants to be the best.”
Altuve’s scouting report proved largely accurate. Peña became the 2022 American League Championship Series and World Series Most Valuable Player, a Gold Glove winner and, for the first time this season, an All-Star. Smith, in Altuve’s view, has similar qualities.
struggled to find his offensive footing. Working with Alex Cintrón, one of the Astros’ hitting coaches, he opened his stance so he could better see the pitcher but still made sure to land with his front foot closed. He also became less upright and raised his back elbow to hold the bat at more of an angle. By minimizing his load, he could let his hands work.
The willingness and ability to make such adjustments are why Altuve believes Smith will be the team’s next superstar.
“It’s not the talent he has, it’s that he wants to learn,” Altuve said.
Until spring training, Smith had never played right field. He was a shortstop in high school, a third baseman at Florida State. His only experience in the outfield was three summer league starts in left as a college sophomore.
The Astros’ initial plan was to play him at third base in spring training, then transition him to both corner outfield spots once he settled at a minor league affiliate. The team’s coaches were so encouraged by his play at third, they envisioned him possibly becoming another Manny Machado. Smith, at 6 feet 3 inches and 224 pounds, also has a powerful arm.
One of the Astros’ outfield instructors, Dave Clark, said the coaches initially told Smith to just be an athlete and catch the ball, that over time they would teach him the nuances of the position. Smith adjusted so quickly, Clark now says he has a chance to win a Gold Glove.

“The two of them had something in common when I first saw them,” Altuve said. “They looked like they would do everything to get better. Work hard. Listen. Show up every day with the same intensity.”
Like many young hitters, Smith initially
The defensive metrics support Clark’s claim. Among AL right fielders, Smith entered Tuesday tied with Aaron Judge for third in outs above average, within striking distance of the co-leaders, the Boston Red Sox’ Wilyer Abreu and the Athletics’ Lawrence Butler. He also ranked third in defensive runs saved, behind the Texas Rangers’ Adolis García and Abreu. His sprint speed among right fielders was second only to Arizona’s Corbin Carroll. Smith said he would lean on veteran teammates for advice. Some rookies are uneasy trying to find their place in a major league clubhouse. Smith made his first impression on his new teammates in February, talking to them as if he had known them forever. At times, he looks like he has also been playing forever. But he is just getting started.
“He hasn’t figured it out yet. It’s just raw talent taking over,” Dubón said. “When he figures it out, he’s probably going to be one of the best players in the game.”
