Island blood inventories are running critically low

The Mutual Services Blood Bank issued an urgent report Thursday indicating that blood inventories have reached critically low levels, just days ahead of the observance of World Blood Donor Day on June 14.

The day is celebrated globally to raise awareness of the need for regular blood donations and to recognize the contributions of voluntary blood donors.

According to detailed data released by the organization, current blood supplies are alarmingly below the established parameters required to ensure uninterrupted support for the more than 40 hospitals throughout Puerto Rico that rely on their services. The decline in blood inventory poses a significant threat to the healthcare system, where timely access to blood can be crucial for patient outcomes.

Dr. Gerardo Latoni, the medical director of the Mutual Services Blood Bank, emphasized the seriousness of the situation. “The current inventory levels we are managing represent a concerning crisis for Puerto Rico’s healthcare system,” he stated. “We urgently require an increase in voluntary donations to guarantee the continuous availability of blood and its components for those in need.”

Operating 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, the organization plays a vital role in responding to medical emergencies. It provides essential blood products for a variety of medical situations, including surgeries, cancer treatment regimens, complicated deliveries, and urgent care for accident victims. The constant availability of blood is essential for these pro-

cedures, underscoring the pressing need for public support. It is important to note that blood components have limited shelf lives, which further complicates the situation. For instance, platelets can only be stored for a maximum of five days, while red blood cells have a shelf life of up to 42 days. This necessitates a continuous and reliable flow of donations to maintain adequate inventory levels and meet patient needs effectively.

Unfortunately, during the summer months, donations typically decrease due to shifts in people’s routines and vacation plans. Despite this seasonal decline, the demand for blood from hospitals remains steady, highlighting a critical gap that needs to be addressed. The Mutual Services Blood Bank is calling on the public to participate actively in blood donation efforts to avert a potential crisis in healthcare services across the island.

Broadband program is under

Puerto Rico Federal Affairs Administration (PRFAA) Executive Director Gabriella Boffelli and Office of Management & Budget (OMB) Executive Director Orlando Rivera Berríos announced Thursday that the Puerto Rico Broadband Program is currently under active federal evaluation.

While reaffirming the commitment of the administration of Gov. Jenniffer González Colón to defending the resources allocated to the island, the officials emphasized that the process related to the Broadband Equity, Access and Deployment (BEAD) program is now under review to ensure compliance with federal requirements and the highest standards of efficiency and transparency. Puerto Rico is working closely with the relevant authorities to responsibly advance its proposal, they said.

“Governor Jenniffer González Colón’s administration has taken the necessary actions to ensure the responsible and effective use of these resources, aligned with the interests of the people and our vision for economic development,” Boffelli said.

In February, González Colón signed a new executive order

federal evaluation

restructuring the island’s broadband program to streamline processes, strengthen accountability, and ensure the effective use of public funds. The action repealed the previous order from 2022, which officials say had established a fragmented and dysfunctional structure.

“The governor took corrective measures to address inherited administrative deficiencies, restoring order where there had been disorganization,” Rivera Berríos said. “Under this new structure, the OGP has been entrusted with direct oversight of the program and the management of allocated funds. This is a sound decision that reflects a clear vision of strong governance and tangible results.”

As part of the restructuring, the former Advisory Council, which had failed to produce concrete progress in infrastructure deployment, was also eliminated. The new approach emphasizes efficient executive management, directed toward clear objectives with direct oversight mechanisms, the officials noted.

“We are focused on providing quality connectivity to the most disadvantaged sectors, without unnecessary bureaucracy or parallel structures,” Rivera Berríos said. “This administration’s goal is to act with seriousness, responsibility, and a sense of urgency.”

50 new legal advocates graduate to support victims of domestic violence

Women’s Advocate Astrid Piñeiro Vázquez announced on Thursday the graduation of 50 new legal advocates from the Legal Advocate Academy of the National Network of Shelters of Puerto Rico, as part of an initiative supported by the Office of the Women’s Advocate. “Today we celebrate with great pride the achievement of this group of legal advocates who successfully completed their training process,” Piñeiro Vázquez said in a written statement.

The agency emphasized that thE group of professionals was trained with a strategic curriculum that responds to the needs observed in the island’s courts, focusing on strengthening the legal representation and defense of survivors of domestic violence.

“This academy is not just another training program; it stands out because it was designed in collaboration between the National Shelter Network and our Office, strategically responding to the real needs we are seeing in the country’s courts,” Piñeiro Vázquez added.

The official noted that the program’s main objective is to strengthen the legal support system for survivors, ensuring they have adequate support and legal preparation in judicial proceedings.

“To those completing this stage today, we congratulate you for your dedication, sensitivity, and commitment,” Piñeiro Vázquez said. “Your work is essential on the path toward a more just, equitable, and violence-free Puerto Rico. Congratulations on this achievement and thank you for being part of the change.”

Governor on Pierluisi: ‘He had the opportunity; he never took any action’

Gov. Jenniffer González Colón responded Thursday to statements made by her predecessor, former Gov. Pedro Pierluisi Urrutia, who urged her to focus on her administration and stop justifying past actions, including the cancellation of the LUMA Energy contract and the handling of federal reconstruction funds.

“I inherited what he left me,” González Colón said at a press conference. “That’s the answer I have to leave. He left me a distribution transmission system with less than 800 megawatts of energy. That’s the reality in terms of generation. And in five months, I’ve added 700 megawatts of energy, and we have a reserve of 1,000 megawatts.”

“The Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority, the [Financial Oversight and Management] Board, and the Energy Bureau are evaluating our proposal to add 800 more megawatts,” the governor continued. “I can understand the frustration. I don’t know how time proved him right. Time proved me right, that LUMA is useless and that it had to be removed. I have been determined to do it, and I will do it as I promised. He had the opportunity; he never took any action. Do you remember that he defended this LUMA contract? That’s why I’m governor today.”

Referring to former Gov. Pedro Pierluisi Urrutia, Gov. Jenniffer González Colón said. “He left me a distribution transmission system with less than 800 megawatts of energy. That’s the reality in terms of generation. And in five months, I’ve added 700 megawatts of energy, and we have a reserve of 1,000 megawatts.”

González Colón added that although she inherited the LUMA contract, her administration has begun a rigorous

oversight process.

“I am conducting the oversight that has never been conducted on this operator,” she said. “I’m not here to defend contractors or operators. I’m here to defend the people of Puerto Rico in the face of the services the government contracts for.” Regarding the reported delay in federal funds, González Colón said there are active transfers and joint work with the municipalities.

“Don’t ask me, ask the municipalities who are seeing how things are being done in Housing, just like in the rest of the agencies,” she said.

The governor asserted that under the previous administration, $1.4 billion in federal funds were lost and that concrete actions are now being taken to prevent that from happening again.

“The executive orders we have approved have allowed projects to move forward,” she said. “Yesterday in Naguabo, we signed one to make a $53 million project viable. That would have taken another year and a half if executive decisions weren’t made.”

González Colón emphasized that the Puerto Rico Planning Board’s report indicates economic growth in the first months of her administration, driven by the use of federal funds.

Governor signs accords to boost health & economic development in Mayagüez

Gov. Jenniffer González Colón signed three collaborative agreements with Mayor Jorge Ramos in Mayagüez on Thursday to promote economic development, improve access to healthcare, and accelerate construction projects in the municipality.

“We are signing these agreements to address the real needs of our citizens,” González Colón said in a written statement. “Mayagüez will have more tools for its economic development and to guarantee essential services such as healthcare.”

One of the agreements allows the municipality to establish its own permitting office after completing, together with the Planning Board, the review of a territorial planning roadmap. The document protects natural resources such as the Caño Corazones Wetland and encourages investment in strategic areas such as the urban center and the port.

Another agreement allocates $10.5 million in federal CDBG-MIT funds to San Antonio Hospital to purchase power generators, refrigeration systems, and specialized equipment for its pediatric intensive care unit. The hospital avoided closure in April and will

now have a new operator, Mayagüez Medical Center.

The third memorandum delegates to the municipality the role of Responsible Entity for Environmental Assessments of federally funded projects. The desgination allows for expedited release of funds and compliance with environmental requirements under the CDBG program.

“This agreement will allow us to respond more quickly to projects that directly benefit the community,” Ramos said. “We are ready to assume the role of responsible entity and facilitate the development of our city.”

the title of professor emeritus, and two posthumous degrees were awarded to Eddie Alberto Caraballo Hernández and Noeliamar

Meléndez Soler.

The RUM graduating class of 2025 is made up of 895 men and 825 women. Of the total 1,509 bachelor’s degree students, 856 earned academic honors. Eighteen students received the Luis Stefani Raffucci Grand Prize for graduating with a perfect four-point average.

The breakdown by department indicates that 581 students completed degrees in arts and sciences, 577 in engineering, 191 in business administration, and 160 in agricultural sciences. In addition, 189 master’s degrees and 22 doctoral degrees were awarded in various disciplines.

The class had representation from 73 of the 78 municipalities, with Mayagüez being the most represented with 357 graduates. It also included 83 international students, mostly from Colombia, Honduras and Peru.

The events included messages from Rullán Toro and UPR Interim President Miguel A. Muñoz Muñoz.

Following tradition, the ceremony’s sponsors were the RUM graduates of 1975. The ceremony was broadcast on the university’s official social media channels under the hashtags #GradRUM2025 and #GradRUM112.

Teachers Association: Schools must be spared from immigration operations

The Puerto Rico Teachers Association (AMPR by its initials in Spanish) and its Local Union reiterated their support Thursday for the policy of non-intervention with schools during federal immigration operations and urged Education Secretary Eliezer Ramos Parés to protect students.

“Schools must remain a sacred temple for our students. Fear cannot replace the mission of teaching, learning, and growing in community,” said AMPR President Víctor Manuel Bonilla Sánchez in a written statement.

Ramos Parés stated that no federal agency has requested information about operations in schools, although he acknowledged that there is an institutional protocol in place to address any situation. He reiterated that schools should not be targeted for intervention.

“The non-intervention policy with schools is an act of justice, sensitivity, and commitment to our children and young people, who deserve to learn without fear of being separated from their families,” the AMPR president said. “We urge the secretary to remain firm in his stance.”

Since January, the island Education Department has maintained that school buildings should not be used as sites for raids or arrests, and has developed a protocol that protects both staff and students. However, the secretary indicated that any court order must be reviewed by the agency.

The AMPR reaffirmed its commitment to the comprehensive well-being of students and demanded respect for the inviolability of schools as safe spaces. It also emphasized educators’ responsibility to protect those who come to the classroom to learn and build their future.

Woman pays $11,400 for Bad Bunny concert tickets that she has not received

A45-year-old woman alleged to the police that she was scammed with resale purchases for Bad Bunny concerts.

According to the police report, the woman contacted a man through a social media platform to purchase tickets for the events. Subsequently, since March, she has sent various amounts of money through the PayPal platform. So far, she has sent $11,480, but has not received the concert tickets. Officer Lyzbeth Rodríguez, assigned to the Caguas District, conducted the preliminary investigation and referred the case to DIREPAPD personnel of the

Caguas Criminal Investigation Unit (CIC), who are continuing the investigation. Citizens are urged to call 787-343-2020 if they have information that could help solve this or other cases, or to report it through Twitter at @PRPDNoticias and on Facebook at www.facebook/prpdgov.

More troops prepare to mobilize as protests show no sign of slowing

Authorities across the country geared up for more demonstrations Thursday and later this week, as troops prepared to mobilize in several states and spreading protests showed no sign of slowing.

A day after officers on foot and on horseback fired flash bangs and foam bullets to disperse a large protest in downtown Los Angeles, Gov. Greg Abbott of Texas said that he had ordered more than 5,000 National Guard troops to be “strategically positioned” to assist law enforcement in his state.

On Thursday afternoon, a federal judge in California was to hear the state’s request to limit the National Guard and Marines deployed by President Donald Trump in Los Angeles to protecting federal buildings. National Guard troops have accompanied federal agents on immigration enforcement raids since Trump deployed them last week against state officials’ advice. The Justice

Department argues that California’s move is an attempt to restrict the president’s power.

At the White House, Trump said the troops’

presence was having an effect, and took credit by falsely stating that “nobody showed up” to protest Wednesday in Los Angeles. “You know why they didn’t show up?” he asked. “Because we were there.”

As the challenge to his order plays out, the administration is proceeding with plans to put more troops on the streets of Los Angeles.

On Wednesday, Chief Jim McDonnell of the Los Angeles Police Department said on CNN’s “The Source” that the situation did not warrant deploying the troops.

Demonstrations against immigration raids were planned in several cities Thursday, including Los Angeles, New York, Chicago and Madison, Wisconsin. Hundreds of people have been arrested across the country since the protests began in Los Angeles last week. Across the country, officials are bracing for even more protests this weekend, many of them scheduled weeks ago to coincide with a military parade in Washington that is taking place on Trump’s 79th birthday.

The Justice Department warned the 93 U.S.

attorney offices around the country, as well as the entire criminal division of the department, to be prepared to handle requests to file criminal charges, or conduct searches, related to the demonstrations set for this weekend.

Here’s what else to know:

— Troops: The U.S. military’s Northern Command said that by Friday evening, roughly 700 Marines are expected to join 2,100 National Guard troops that have been guarding federal property and personnel in Los Angeles. The commander overseeing the military operations told reporters Wednesday that the Marines were at a naval base south of the city, and that 2,000 additional Guard troops would begin training Thursday afternoon.

— Workplace raids: The Trump administration’s immigration crackdown is hitting many California farms that depend on migrant farmworkers. Federal agents have also raided at least five carwashes across Los Angeles and Orange counties since Sunday, according to a nonprofit organization that supports carwash workers’ rights.

Sen. Alex Padilla forcibly removed and handcuffed after confronting Noem

Sen. Alex Padilla, D-Calif., was forcibly removed from a news conference being held by Kristi Noem, the Homeland Security secretary, and handcuffed Thursday after he pushed past guards at a federal building in West Los Angeles.

“Sir! Sir! Hands off!” Padilla, 52, shouted as federal agents tried to muscle him out of the room where Noem was speaking inside a government office building about 15 miles west of downtown Los Angeles. “I am Sen. Alex Padilla; I have a question for the secretary.”

As Padilla — a graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the son of Mexican immigrants and a Los Angeles native — began to question the authenticity of a bank of mug shots behind her, agents shoved him out of the room, told him to drop to his knees in a hallway and handcuffed him, based on videos taken by Padilla’s office and a Fox News reporter.

A small group of reporters pivoted their cameras toward the disruption. Other national and local journalists were forced to wait outside the building after officials blocked access to the news conference shortly before the event began.

The secretary was at a podium thanking the U.S. Army, the

Marines and the National Guard for providing “security” when Padilla made his entrance.

Padilla told reporters that he learned of Noem’s news conference while he was waiting for a scheduled briefing down the hall. He said he has asked for answers about the administration’s “increasingly extreme” immigration actions and has not been able to get them.

Padilla was not detained, and he had a conversation with the secretary for about 10 to 15 minutes after the news conference, Noem said.

She said that his approach without “identifying himself” was inappropriate. “I will say that people need to identify themselves before they start lunging at people,” she said.

In a statement, the senator’s office said that he was “in Los Angeles exercising his duty to perform congressional oversight of the federal government’s operations in Los Angeles and across California.”

“He was in the federal building to receive a briefing with General Guillot and was listening to Secretary Noem’s press conference. He tried to ask the secretary a question, and was forcibly removed by federal agents, forced to the ground and handcuffed. He is not currently detained, and we are working to get additional information,” the statement said.

Gov. Gavin Newsom of California denounced the action. The senator “is one of the most decent people I know,” Newsom wrote in a social media post. “This is outrageous, dictatorial, and shameful. Trump and his shock troops are out of control. This must end now.”

Word swiftly reached Washington, where Padilla’s colleagues saw video of the incident.

Senators in both parties raised strong objections to the treatment of Padilla. “I think it is very disturbing,” said Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, who acknowledged she was unsure what led up to the confrontation. “It looks like he is being manhandled and physically removed. It is hard to imagine a justification for that.”

Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., the minority leader, addressed the Senate floor regarding treatment of Padilla.

“I just saw something that sickened my stomach,” he said. “The manhandling of a United States senator. We need immediate answers to what the hell went on.”

New China trade ‘deal’ takes US back to where it started

After two days of tense negotiations, the United States and China appear to have walked back from the brink of a devastating economic conflict — maybe.

Officials from the two countries reached a handshake agreement in the early hours of Wednesday in London to remove some of the harmful measures they had used to target each others’ economies as part of a clash that rapidly intensified in recent months.

It remains unclear whether the truce will hold — or crumble like one struck in May did. Even if the agreement does prove durable, its big accomplishment appears to be merely returning the countries to a status quo from several months ago, before Trump provoked tensions with China in early April by ramping up tariffs on goods it produces.

“It seems like we’re negotiating in circles,” said Myron Brilliant, a senior counselor at DGA-Albright Stonebridge Group and former executive vice president of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

“You escalate, you deescalate,” he added. “At the end of the day we’re not really further along.”

As a result of this week’s negotiations, tariffs will stay where they are. Further details are scant, other than the likely rollback of aggressive policies the two countries adopted since May.

China is expected to loosen restrictions on exports of minerals that had threatened to cripple an array of American manufacturers. The United States will in return relax new limits that it placed on its own exports of technology and products, as well as walk back threats to cancel visas for Chinese students in the United States.

The countries did not announce progress on other trade issues. Those matters would be left for future discussions, American officials said.

For many analysts, the London meetings raised questions about what exactly had been gained by Trump’s aggressive trade tactics against China over the past few months, or whether his actions had ultimately backfired.

“What exactly are we getting that we weren’t already getting before?” said Veronique de Rugy, a senior research fellow with the Mercatus Center, a libertarian think tank. “This deal suggests there was never a real plan.”

Trump administration officials have argued that the United States came out on top from the recent escalations, saying that the punitive measures they issued in response to China’s curbs on rare earth exports show that the country has plenty of its own firepower. In recent weeks, the United States limited access to a range of software, products, chemicals and technologies, including critical elements China uses to develop advanced chips and jet engines.

The administration has also pointed to the strength of the U.S. economy and limited inflation to argue that even very high tariffs on Chinese imports have had few negative effects.

Other forecasters have not been so sanguine. In a report this week, the World Bank said that U.S. tariffs would

President Donald Trump departs Joint Base Andrews, Md., for Ft. Bragg, where he will meet with U.S. service members, June 10, 2025. If a handshake trade agreement holds, it would likely just undo some of the damage from the trade war that President Trump started. (Kenny Holston/The New York Times)

set the stage for the weakest decade of global growth since the 1960s.

Trump proclaimed on social media Wednesday morning that “our deal with China is done” and that the “relationship is excellent,” though he acknowledged that the agreement was still subject to final approval by himself and his counterpart, Xi Jinping.

“Full magnets, and any necessary rare earths, will be supplied, up front, by China,” he wrote, in all capital letters. “Likewise, we will provide to China what was agreed to, including Chinese students using our colleges and universities (which has always been good with me!).”

The discussions in London played out over two long days and nights and repeatedly became heated, according to two people with knowledge of the meetings. At various moments, the talks seemed as if they might fall apart, they added — a sign of the lack of trust between the two governments.

Howard Lutnick, the secretary of commerce, who took part in the negotiations, said that the president’s fundamental goal toward China was to “reduce the trade deficit and increase trade.”

“But first we had to get, sort of, the negativity out,” he said as the talks concluded. “Now we can go forward to try to do positive trade, growing trade, and beneficial to both China and to the United States.”

Analysts and experts argued that the events of recent weeks showed that the Trump administration overplayed its hand against China. The United States has an almost immediate, economywide need for the rare earth minerals and magnets that China produces. Chinese restrictions on these exports forced carmakers and other industries to lobby the White House for relief, and eventually threatened to deplete inventories of U.S. military hardware.

The restrictions that the United States put on China in return would undoubtedly prove painful for the Chinese economy, too. But some analysts emphasized that those

would also inflict pain on the United States.

Philip Luck, a director in the economics program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a Washington think tank, wrote in a recent analysis that U.S. restrictions on ethane exports destined for China had particularly backfired. It forced, for example, major American energy companies to halt billions of dollars in planned exports. With ethane cut off, Chinese plants could simply burn other fuels they can obtain elsewhere — which cost more but would prevent any interruptions.

“These controls fail to clear even the lowest bar for an economic weapon,” Luck wrote. “Beyond hurting U.S. producers more than their Chinese counterparts, they undermine the administration’s own energy dominance agenda and signal to allies that the United States cannot be trusted even in supposedly apolitical commodity markets.”

Ilaria Mazzocco, a senior fellow at Center for Strategic and International Studies, said tariff threats and other policies had been guided by a theory in Washington that “China would buckle under pressure very quickly,” in part because its export-driven economy has been showing signs of weakness.

“I think what China proved is that actually it’s in a pretty strong position and it can bear a lot of pain, and perhaps actually more pain than the United States,” she added. She also said that China had also demonstrated its ability to use export controls to inflict pain on the United States in a way it had never broached before.

Jin Canrong, a professor of international studies at Renmin University in Beijing, wrote in a commentary last week that rare earths were “a trump card in China’s hand.”

“Trump should understand that pressure and threats are definitely not the right way to deal with China,” he wrote.

Stocks tick up but dollar hits 2025 low amid mixed macro signals

The dollar hit a 2025 low on Thursday but Wall Street stocks held near record highs as traders weighed low inflation readings, rising Middle East tensions, and the fragility of a U.S.-China trade truce.

U.S. consumer and producer inflation reports showed overall price pressures remained contained in May, largely due to declines in the cost of gasoline, cars and housing, or services like air transport. But most economists expect inflation to pick up as the impact of U.S. tariffs begins to bite.

The dollar, which has lost around 10% in value against a basket of currencies this year, fell to its lowest since April 2022.

Global stocks continued an almost-unbroken rally since early April, leaving the MSCI All-Country World index up 0.25%, just below Wednesday’s all-time high.

On Wall Street, the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.16%, while the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq Composite both gained about 0.3%.

Shares of planemaker Boeing lost about 5% after an Air India aircraft carrying more than 200 people crashed in India’s western city of Ahmedabad, and aviation tracking site Flightradar24 said the plane was a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner.

Oracle shares rose nearly 14% after the cloud service provider raised its annual revenue growth forecast.

European equities logged their fourth consecutive decline on Thursday as trade optimism waned, with the STOXX 600 down 0.3%. Stocks in China and Hong Kong also fell, led by declines in the tech sector.

The U.S. administration said on Wednesday U.S. personnel were being moved out of the Middle East due to heightened regional security risks, which briefly drove oil prices up by 4% before they receded.

“(A flare-up in tensions) is a significant tail risk, but I don’t think it is anybody’s baseline forecast. So it’s something to watch if there is a real escalation there, then markets will take fright and that would have ramifications for the oil price,” Daiwa Capital economist Chris Scicluna said.

Iran said it will not abandon its right to uranium enrichment, a senior Iranian official told Reuters on Thursday, adding that a “friendly” regional country had alerted Tehran over a potential military strike by Israel.

Classic safe-haven assets got a lift. The Swiss franc and Japanese yen strengthened, pushing the dollar down 1% against the franc and down 0.67% against the yen, while gold rose about 0.9% to $3,382 an ounce.

Relief stemming from a positive conclusion to U.S.-China trade talks earlier this week, which President Donald Trump

said was a “great deal with China,” evaporated by Thursday.

Adding yet another dose of market uncertainty, Trump said the U.S. would send out letters in one to two weeks outlining the terms of trade deals to dozens of other countries, which they could embrace or reject.

Over 260 dead after Air India crash, official says, with at least one survivor

Rescuers were combing the smoldering wreckage of an Air India passenger jet that crashed moments after takeoff Thursday in the western Indian city of Ahmedabad, killing more than 200 passengers and dozens of people on the ground.

A senior police official in Ahmedabad, Vishakha Dabral, said early Friday that 269 bodies had been brought to the main hospital there so far. Dabral cautioned that the exact toll would emerge only after DNA testing.

One passenger was known to have survived the crash, India’s home minister, Amit Shah, told reporters in Ahmedabad on Thursday night.

The plane, carrying 242 passengers and crew members, crashed into a medical college about a mile southwest of the city’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. As night fell and smoke hung in the air, heavy machines worked to untangle charred pieces of the aircraft at the crash site, and their operators treaded carefully to avoid all-out structural collapses.

Rescue personnel at the site, as well as doctors and security officials, suggested that as many as three dozen people who were caught in the path of the crashing plane had been killed.

A brief video clip circulating on Indian news media shows a man with injuries on his face and blood on his white shirt limping toward an ambulance, saying he had come from “inside” the plane. News outlets in Britain identified him as Viswashkumar Ramesh, a British national. While there is a passenger with that name on the flight’s manifest, The New York Times has not been able to confirm that the man in the video is the same passenger.

Dr. Dhaval Gameti, who said he examined the survivor, told The Associated Press that the survivor was “disoriented with multiple injuries all over his body, but he seems to be out of danger.”

Ahmedabad’s police commissioner, G.S. Malik, said emergency crews had recovered 204 bodies.

It was not immediately clear what had caused the plane, bound for London Gatwick Airport, to crash. Officials at the crash site said it was likely that it skidded after it came down, damaging buildings, before bursting into flames. Sections of the plane, including its tail, were left jutting out of the damaged dining facility.

Video verified by the Times that was taken from the rooftop of a building about a half-mile south of Ahmed-

abad’s airport shows the Air India jet descending steadily over a cluster of buildings before crashing. A large explosion is visible over the horizon.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India said in a statement on social media that the crash was “heartbreaking beyond words.”

Here’s what else to know:

— Passengers: The airline said the plane, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, had been carrying 169 Indian citizens, 53 British nationals, seven Portuguese citizens and one Canadian. At least 41 people were injured and receiving treatment, Malik said, a number that could include both passengers and people on the ground. Campbell Wilson, Air India’s CEO, said that “injured passengers” had been taken to the hospital. Authorities in Ahmedabad asked family members of passengers to submit DNA samples to help identify the bodies.

— Crash concerns: It could take months or years to determine the cause of the crash, but safety experts questioned why the plane appeared to descend so soon after it took off. The type of plane involved, a Boeing 787 Dreamliner, has been under scrutiny for years. Until Thursday, the Dreamliner had never been in a fatal crash, according to a review of accident data maintained by Cirium, an aviation data firm.

— Britain’s reaction: The British government said it was working with Indian authorities to “urgently establish the facts” and opened a hotline for British citizens in India seeking information about the crash. Prime Minister Keir Starmer said that scenes of the crash were “devastating” and that he was being updated on the situation.

— Air India: The airline, India’s flagship carrier, has worked to improve its safety record after several dangerous incidents. In August 2020, an Air India Express flight overshot the runway in the city of Kozhikode, killing 21 people.

Trump acknowledges Israel could attack Iran soon

President Donald Trump acknowledged Thursday that there was a significant risk that Israel could soon attack Iran, but he said that “I don’t want them going in” at a moment when progress was being made toward an agreement to shut down Iran’s easiest pathway to building a nuclear weapon.

Trump said that an attack would likely destroy the chances for a diplomatic solution. “I think it would blow it,” he said, before adding, “Might help it, actually, but it could also blow it.” His statement came just hours after the administration announced that Steve Witkoff, Trump’s special envoy to the Middle East, planned to meet the Iranian foreign minister in Oman on Sunday for another negotiating session.

The somewhat contradictory signals from the White House came amid growing signs that Israel was preparing for a strike

of unknown proportions against Iranian sites. Trump refused to give details of a conversation he held Monday with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu or to say whether, in that conversation, he had given any kind of go-ahead to the Israeli leader to proceed with a strike. In recent weeks, Trump has said that he told Netanyahu to hold off on any military action while negotiations were ongoing.

Just hours before Trump spoke, the board of the International Atomic Energy Agency, the United Nations body that inspects nuclear programs to assure there is no diversion of fuel for weapons use, condemned Iran in a resolution for failing to answer questions that have mounted in recent years about possible past military nuclear activity at several sites around the country. In response, Iranian officials vowed to produce even more near-bomb-grade uranium and to open a third nuclear enrichment site, deep underground.

In recent days, Iran has rejected a key demand from the

Trump administration: that it must cease all enrichment of uranium, a key fuel for making nuclear weapons. Under a proposal Witkoff sent to his Iranian counterparts two weeks ago, the country would be able to make that transition slowly, continuing to produce fuel.

Extremely lifelike dolls cause a frenzy in Brazil

Ayoung woman posts a video that appears to show her holding her baby, Bento, and packing his bag for a trip to the hospital. She calls it “one of the busiest and scariest days for me.”

She grabs onesies, a bottle and medical documents and tucks him in the back of a car. At the hospital, he is weighed and lies in a bed, where she removes his pacifier, bottle-feeds him and wipes a few drops of formula from his cheek.

But this was not an actual medical emergency — it was role-playing by a content creator — and the baby was not a real baby. It was a shockingly lifelike doll, called a reborn doll, which is handcrafted to look and feel like a baby.

The video, which received more than 16 million views on TikTok, is part of a social media craze that has turned into a cultural and political flashpoint in Brazil. Widely circulated videos show women taking the hyperrealistic dolls to the park in strollers, celebrating their birthdays with cake and songs, and simulating childbirth. (A select few even simulate the dolls’ having a nosebleed or potty training.)

“The ones I like the most are the newborns,” said Juliana Drusz Magri, 36, who lives in Curitiba, the capital of the Brazilian state of Paraná, and works in human resources. She said she began collecting the dolls in 2018 and now has 22.

“The world of make-believe is an escape valve for me,” she said. “And, no, I don’t treat it like a real baby.”

The dolls have flooded into pop culture. They were featured this month in an episode of “Vale Tudo,” a prime-time telenovela, and in a rap song trending

on social media about a gang that walks down the street “kicking reborn dolls.”

Newspaper columnists, influencers and lawmakers have all weighed in, with varying degrees of sincerity about what some perceive as a threat to the social order and what others have described as a harmless hobby.

In the northwestern Brazilian state of Amazonas, one lawmaker, João Luiz, recently carried one of the dolls into the legislature and argued, without evidence, that some women have been demanding public benefits for the dolls. His colleague Joana Darc also voiced concern.

“You just can’t force a doctor in a hospital, for example, to treat a reborn doll as if it were a child, which is a living being,” she said on the floor. “You can’t force a teacher to accept a child in a day care center because the person wants the reborn doll to study.”

She asked where it would end: with people taking “reborn pets” to the veterinarian to be neutered?

In what looked like a bit of trolling, the official social media account of Curitiba warned the “mothers” of reborn dolls not to sit in the yellow seats on city buses reserved for pregnant women. “Reborns are cute, but they don’t guarantee a place in the yellow seat, OK?” the post read.

In defense of the dolls, the Rio de Janeiro City Council approved a proposal to make Sept. 4 Reborn Stork Day, a holiday honoring the artisans who make the dolls.

But the mayor of Rio de Janeiro, Eduardo Paes, vetoed the proposal. “With all due respect to those interested, this isn’t happening,” he wrote on social media.

At least 30 bills have been filed in legislative houses across the country to bar the dolls from receiving services in public health facilities, according to public

Vivi Louhrinci, an actress and artist who has been creating reborn dolls since 2020, delicately paints a doll in Curitiba, Brazil, June 6, 2025. records. But there appears to have been just one documented case of a woman with a psychiatric disorder showing up at a hospital to seek treatment for her doll, only to be turned away at the entrance, the news outlet UOL reported. Most of the bills have been introduced by members of right-wing parties.

Vivi Louhrinci, 30, an actor from Curitiba, has been making reborn dolls since 2020, including some for the Brazilian productions of “Wicked” and “Matilda.”

“My life has turned into chaos with this boom,” she said, referring to the frenzy around the dolls. “It has been a good exposure in this sense, but it is an exposure that is causing so much stress.”

Camila Infanger, a doctoral candidate in political science at the University of São Paulo, said there had been a noticeable difference in the response to hobbies associated with women and those associated with men.

“Because women are doing it and women

are the principal actors in this, it’s been stigmatized differently,” she said, adding that the backlash was “just another way to regulate women’s lives.”

The dolls have been around since the 1990s, when people started stripping the paint and hair off store-bought vinyl dolls and painstakingly reworking them to be more lifelike. And the interest in them is not limited to Brazil.

Dave Stack of Cleveland, the owner of Reborns, an online marketplace for reborn dolls, said he had seen a “slow and steady increase” in sales since he started the site in 2012. He now sells 40 to 60 dolls per day, up from about 10 per day five years ago, according to his website.

Most cost around $200 to $250 and are made of vinyl, while a few limitededition dolls made of softer silicone have sold for more than $4,000, he said.

A small percentage of the dolls are purchased by mothers who are grieving the loss of a child, Stack said. Others have been bought by memory-care facilities, lawyers who use them for courtroom reenactments and people making movies and television shows. But most buyers are “just people who love babies,” he said.

Hope after Trump

Is President Donald Trump irrecoverably damaging America?

I’ve been pondering that lately, partly because several of my friends have been so traumatized by Trump that they are wondering whether to give up on America and move to Canada to rebuild their lives there. I’ve tried to reassure them that this is not 1938 Germany.

They shrug and note that 1935 Germany wasn’t 1938 Germany, either — but that’s what it became.

Yet, in the post-Cold War era, the typical authoritarian model isn’t the police state conjured by Hitlerian nightmares. Rather, it’s more nuanced. It’s one in which a charismatic leader is elected and then uses a democratic mandate to rig democratic institutions.

In such states, there are elections that aren’t entirely fair, news organizations that aren’t free but also aren’t Pravda, a repressive apparatus that may not torture dissidents but does audit and impoverish them. The rough model is Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s Hungary, or the Law and Justice party’s Poland, or President Rodrigo Duterte’s Philippines or Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s India. You can call this competitive authoritarianism or a rigged democracy or something else, but a key feature is that elections still matter even if the playing field is tilted — and most important, such authoritarians are periodically ousted.

These 21st-century authoritarians have gained ground in

many countries, partly in reaction to surging migration. But the longer trend runs against autocrats, I think.

That’s partly structural. Authoritarians surround themselves with sycophants so that no one warns them when they proclaim dumb policies that tank the economy. Free from oversight, they yield to dissolution and corruption.

I’ve been covering authoritarians around the world my entire career, and so often, they seemed unassailable as they banned me “for life.” But it usually turned out to be the dictator’s life, not mine.

When I first covered South Korea, it was a dictatorship that had tortured and imprisoned dissident Kim Dae-jung. Kim recounted to me how he lay shivering in his freezing cell, feeling hopeless, and finally breaking down and weeping, tears cascading down icy cheeks. Yet, I eventually covered Kim’s rise to the presidency and the dictators’ own prison sentences.

In recent years alone, look at what has happened to some of the most prominent authoritarians around the world. In Brazil, the Supreme Court in March ordered former President Jair Bolsonaro to stand trial on charges of discussing a coup to stay in office. And in Hungary, Orban’s party is now lagging in some opinion polls.

In the Philippines, Duterte targeted brave journalist Maria Ressa, who faced up to 34 years in prison for committing journalism. But now Ressa has a Nobel Peace Prize and is free, while Duterte is in a prison cell in The Hague, Netherlands, facing charges of crimes against humanity before the International Criminal Court.

I caught up recently with Ressa, and her line to Americans is, “If you’re depressed now, think of the Philippines” — and find hope.

It’s true that transient leaders can do enduring damage. Brexit may leave Britain forever diminished. In the early 20th century, Argentina was one of the world’s richest countries, but wretched governance has enfeebled it for a century. And corruption, civil war and misrule left China poorer per capita in 1950 than it had been almost eight centuries earlier, at the end of the Song dynasty.

Still, nations such as America with strong institutions are hardy. The Roman Empire survived Nero and Caligula. The United States came through the Civil War and periodic bouts of lunacy, including previous flirtations with authoritarianism.

So where does Trump fit in?

I believe he is weakening the pillars that have made America the world’s strongest economy: higher education, scientific research, rule of law, a melting pot of immigrants, recruitment of the world’s best minds, the strong dollar, American soft power and the international architecture created by America in 1945 to underpin global security and trade.

Domestically, the United States is showing resilience. The federal courts have mostly stood strong, as have some law firms. Harvard University has shown courage and integrity in leading the effort to preserve the independence of higher education (conflict alert: I’m a former member of Harvard’s board of overseers, and my wife is a current member). Some

news organizations such as The Associated Press have stood their ground. And although Congress may shrink Medicaid and force about 10 million people to lose coverage, the resulting pain may simply expedite the end of Trumpism.

That will be too late, granted, for those who lose health insurance and die unnecessarily. And the Trump administration’s vaccine skepticism may leave measles endemic in the United States again, while the administration’s cancellation of research toward an mRNA flu vaccine increases the risk of a devastating new pandemic.

On balance, I think the United States can recover from Trump at home. I’m less confident that the United States can fix the Trumpian mess internationally.

Will Canadians trust the United States again anytime in the next two decades? Can NATO recover from the doubts Trump has seeded? Will the dollar-based global financial architecture remain strong? Will we be able to restore the international rules-based order, however hypocritical it sometimes was? Will our allies trust and rely on the American nuclear umbrella? Can we again knit together Pacific partners to deter Chinese aggression? Can we revive global health surveillance and fight Ebola where it erupts? Can we build a robust global governance system in time to keep artificial intelligence safe?

I’m skeptical. I fear the upshot is increased risk of war, of nuclear proliferation, of pandemics. Instead of protecting America, Trump may have made our world more dangerous, perhaps for decades to come — and that will not be easily reversed.

But here’s the other thing to remember: If Filipinos can win back their country, then surely we Americans can as well. Given the enormous stakes, this is a time for a rebirth of liberal patriotism. So don’t emigrate, friends; stay and fight for your country’s future. And the world’s.

Brian Wilson, pop auteur and leader of the Beach Boys, dies at 82

Brian Wilson, who as the leader and chief songwriter of the Beach Boys became rock’s poet laureate of surf-and-sun innocence, but also an embodiment of damaged genius through his struggles with mental illness and drugs, has died. He was 82.

His family announced the death but did not say where or when he died, or state a cause. In 2024, after the death of his wife, Melinda Wilson, business representatives for Brian Wilson were granted a conservatorship by a California state judge, after they asserted that he had “a major neurocognitive disorder” and had been diagnosed with dementia.

On mid-1960s hits like “Surfin’ U.S.A.,” “California Girls” and “Fun, Fun, Fun,” the Beach Boys created a musical counterpart to the myth of Southern California as paradise.

That vision, manifested in Wilson’s crystalline vocal arrangements, helped make the Beach Boys the defining American band of the era. During its clean-cut heyday of 1962 to 1966, the group landed 13 singles in the Billboard Top 10. Three of them went to No. 1: “I Get Around,” “Help Me, Rhonda” and “Good Vibrations.”

He was 82. (Chang W. Lee/The New York Times)

At the same time, Wilson — who didn’t surf — became one of pop’s most gifted and idiosyncratic studio auteurs.

“That ear,” Bob Dylan once remarked. “I mean, Jesus, he’s got to will that to the Smithsonian.”

Wilson’s masterpiece was the 1966 album “Pet Sounds.” The album was a commercial disappointment upon its release, but the technical sophistication and melancholic depth of tracks like “God Only Knows” and “I Just Wasn’t Made for These Times” eventually led critics and fellow musicians to honor it as an epochal achievement.

But in following up “Pet Sounds,” Wilson stumbled. Over months of sessions for an album he intended to call “Smile,”

Wilson indulged his every eccentricity, no matter how expensive or fruitless, and his growing drug habit fueled paranoia and delusion.

Abandoned by Wilson, “Smile” entered rock lore as a lost document of a brilliant but troubled mind. Mike Love, the Beach Boys vocalist and longtime foil of Wilson’s, called it “a whole album of Brian’s madness.” It remained unfinished for nearly 40 years.

Wilson’s life story came to be portrayed as a struggle to escape from the yokes of two men: his abusive father and a controlling psychotherapist, Eugene Landy. Landy’s unorthodox methods were effective in nursing Wilson back to health during two periods of treatment in the 1970s and ’80s.

Yet Landy also went into business with his patient, sharing copyrights with Wilson and taking writing credits on some of his songs.

Landy eventually came under the scrutiny of California authorities and surrendered his license. After an intervention by Wilson’s family, a court order also blocked Landy from contact with Wilson.

Wilson spoke openly about his struggles with mental illness, including his experience with schizoaffective disorder, a condition characterized by hallucinations and delusions. The condition led to the conservatorship granted to his business associates in early 2024.

Brian Douglas Wilson was born June 20, 1942, in Inglewood, California, to Murry and Audree (Korthof) Wilson. His father was a heavy-machinery salesperson who had collected a handful of credits as a frustrated songwriter. His mother, a homemaker, kept the Beach Boys’ books in the early days of the band.

The family moved to Hawthorne, California, when Brian was a toddler, and had two more boys, Dennis and Carl.

By 1961, the three Wilson boys were playing rock music with Love, a cousin, and a schoolmate of Brian’s, Al Jardine.

Around that time, Dennis began surfing and delighted in the fashion, trendy lingo and carefree lifestyle that went along with it. One day he told Brian and Love, “You guys ought to write a song about surfing.”

They did, and that fall, the group recorded its first song, “Surfin’.” The young men called themselves the Pendletones, after a type of flannel shirt popular among surfers. When they received the finished record, released by a small local label, Candix, they discovered that they had been renamed the Beach Boys.

Signed by Capitol Records in 1962, the group was prolific from the start, releasing 10 studio LPs through 1965.

Wilson became the band’s primary producer and songwriter, and his sophistication soon shone through. “Surfer Girl,” a lilting, harmony-drenched ballad that went to No. 7 in 1963, was perhaps the first pop hit written, arranged, produced and sung by the same person.

Wilson’s first No. 1, however, came as a writer of Jan and Dean’s song “Surf City” (1963). In a sign of conflicts to come, Murry Wilson, who managed the Beach Boys and controlled the band’s songwriting copyrights, was furious that Brian had given a valuable hit to another act.

Other problems surfaced. “Surfin’ U.S.A.” resembled Chuck Berry’s “Sweet Little Sixteen” a bit too closely, so Berry’s name was added to the credits, and his publisher acquired the song’s copyright.

In December 1964, Wilson married Marilyn Rovell, who sang in a girl group called the Honeys. A few weeks later, he had a panic attack on a flight to a Beach Boys engagement in Houston and decided to quit touring to concentrate on songwriting and recording.

That same year, the group fired Murry

vated the Beach Boys’ music to a level far above anything they had created before. With the rest of the group on the road, Wilson made the album primarily with studio musicians.

Upon release, the album stalled at No. 10, a relative dud by Beach Boys standards. By then, however, Wilson was working on his next gem: the single “Good Vibrations.”

Spliced together from months of sessions across four studios, “Good Vibrations” was a catchy and sonically adventurous invocation of peppy West Coast spirituality. Released in October 1966, the song became an indelible radio hit, but it was Wilson’s last moment at the vanguard of pop.

started a business partnership, called Brains and Genius, that allowed Landy to draw profits from Wilson’s recordings, films and other ventures.

Landy was the executive producer of “Brian Wilson,” and he and his girlfriend, Alexandra Morgan, shared songwriting credits with Wilson on some tracks. Wilson said he even modified his will to make Landy its primary beneficiary.

Wilson as manager.

As Brian Wilson would recount, his father had long tormented him. In one form of punishment, his father would remove his glass eye and force his son to stare into the empty socket.

“My dad was violent,” Wilson wrote in a 2016 memoir, “I Am Brian Wilson,” written with Ben Greenman. “He was cruel.”

Freed from his father’s control and the Beach Boys’ touring demands, Wilson immersed himself in the studio.

“Pet Sounds,” released in May 1966, ele -

Wilson’s drug use, which had begun during happier times for the band, had grown out of control, stunting his creativity. “I lost interest in writing songs,” Wilson once told Rolling Stone.

For about a year, starting in 1975, he was treated by Landy, whose methods included dousing his patient with cold water in the morning. He also limited his patient’s contact with others, including Wilson’s family, to underscore the therapist’s role as “the ultimate power in this situation,” as Landy once put it.

Wilson continued to perform as part of the Beach Boys, but his behavior was erratic and his drug use continued. In 1982, the Beach Boys kicked Wilson out of the group, and he returned to the care of Landy. His treatment, begun in seclusion in Hawaii, included a strict diet and vitamin regimen, with Wilson under constant supervision.

Landy’s techniques raised eyebrows, but in Wilson’s case they seemed effective. When the singer made the press rounds in 1988 for his first solo album, “Brian Wilson,” he appeared fit, energetic and focused.

The extent of Landy’s control over his patient, and his involvement in Wilson’s career, drew concern among Wilson’s family and people in the music industry. The two men

After an investigation by California authorities into his treatment of Wilson and other patients, Landy surrendered his license in 1989, though he continued to work with Wilson through their partnership. Members of Wilson’s family filed a conservatorship case over Wilson’s care. In 1992, as a result of a settlement in that case, Landy was barred by court order from making any contact with Wilson; his name and that of Morgan, whom he later married, were removed from song credits. Landy died in 2006 at 71.

In 1995, Wilson married Melinda Ledbetter, a former model who worked at a car dealership and had sold him a Cadillac. He frequently credited her with helping him rebuild his life after his entanglement with Landy. She died in 2024.

“Melinda was more than my wife,” Wilson said at the time. “She was my savior. She gave me the emotional security I needed to have a career. She encouraged me to make the music that was closest to my heart. She was my anchor.”

Brian and Melinda adopted three daughters, Daria, Delanie and Dakota, and two sons, Dylan and Dash. Those children survive him, as do two daughters from his marriage to Marilyn, Carnie and Wendy Wilson, of the pop group Wilson Phillips; and six grandchildren.

Dennis Wilson drowned in the Pacific Ocean in 1983 after a drinking binge. He was 39. Carl Wilson died of lung cancer in 1998 at age 51.

My visit to the Trump winery, where patriotism is sold by the bottle

The pastoral countryside south of Charlottesville, Virginia, is quietly presidential.

Visitors from around the world travel through the green rolling hills to Monticello, the home of Thomas Jefferson. Though it’s been named as a UNESCO world heritage site, its presence is indicated only by a decorous sign.

From there, the Thomas Jefferson Parkway leads to the James Monroe Parkway, where a more discreet sign points toward Highland, Monroe’s home.

The restraint ends a few miles down the road, where the American flags begin. Hundreds of them line the top rungs of splitrail fences facing Route 627, snapping in the wind and stretching for a mile or more. Like a big brass band, they shout out your arrival at Trump Winery.

I visited the winery in mid-April while exploring Virginia wine country. I was curious about the wine, given its association with President Donald Trump, who has said he has never consumed alcoholic beverages.

Trump doesn’t exactly own this winery. Its proprietor is Eric Trump Wine Manufacturing, a limited liability company. Eric Trump, the president’s middle son, is its president. A disclaimer on the winery’s website states that the company “is not owned, managed, or affiliated with Donald J. Trump or any of his affiliates.”

Nonetheless, the winery makes plain its association with the Trump patriarch, whether through the MAGA paraphernalia displayed in the gift shop or the bottles of “inaugural edition” Presidential Reserve sparkling wine, sold in gift boxes for $245.47, a not-so-veiled reference to the 45th and 47th man to hold the office.

If those bottles seem a little dear, other merchandise include Trump Winery bathrobes, pajamas and T-shirts, along with $35 scented candles. “They smell like money,” one visitor suggested.

The Trump Winery sits on 1,300 acres of the former estate where John and Patricia Kluge, a 1980s power couple who were embraced by the era’s society pages, built Albemarle House, a 45-room manor in the Georgian style. When the couple split up, Patricia Kluge took the estate and, in 1999, established what was then called Kluge Estate Winery and Vineyard. But after she ex-

perienced financial difficulties and declared bankruptcy, the Trumps bought the property in 2011.

The manor is now a hotel “designed to offer an experience like no other,” its website says. The Trump Winery tasting room is nearby in the Grand Hall, situated on a hill overlooking immaculate vineyards and manmade lakes. It draws the MAGA faithful, who arrive by car and bus in all manner of red, white and blue finery. On my visit, star-spangled T-shirts, flag-bedecked handbags and leggings and, of course, red MAGA caps peppered the tasting room.

“It’s been very busy,” a server said. “People come from all over the world to visit.”

With more than 240 acres planted (and more to come, the server said), the Trump vineyard is one of the biggest on the East Coast. Like many wineries, it does business as an event space, hosting corporate retreats, team-building exercises and weddings, including an “elopement package” for those keeping it small. But most of the visitors come to taste wine.

Their options include tasting in a restaurant setting, for pairing wines and food. An order of “reserve” caviar is $135, but a cheese and charcuterie board is $37 and bang bang shrimp, tempura-battered and served with “sweet bang bang sauce,” is $15. Curiously, the Trump Grill at Trump Tower in New York serves boom boom shrimp, in spicy mayon-

naise and lime, for $21.

If you belong to the Trump Wine Club (starting at $79 per quarter-year), you have access to the Wine Club Lounge, a private tasting area. Or you can simply sit outside and enjoy the lovely view of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The Adirondack chairs are surprisingly understated. In fact, except for the golden bathroom fixtures, the tasting room displays little of the usual Trump ostentation.

I chose the indoor tasting area, with low wooden tables and comfortable leather seating. At the polished wood counter, I ordered two flights of four wines each, the Featured for $25 and the Reserved for $30. These are the going rates for Virginia tasting rooms, far less expensive than in Napa Valley, where tasting-room tabs average around $75 per person.

A tasting-room attendant delivered the flights to my seat, along with a Riedel wine glass embossed with the winery name, which visitors are free to take home. Depending on which Riedel factory produces them, these glasses come from Austria or Germany, so replacements for those giveaways, now subject to 10% tariffs, will rise in price. So will the French oak barrels, which Trump Winery uses to age several of its wines.

I apologetically asked for a container in which to spit my tastes of wine, and was handed a small cup made, I was happy to see, of compostable plastic.

How were the wines? Inconsistent. A 2018 blanc de blancs sparkling wine ($39.99), made entirely of chardonnay, was dry, creamy and well balanced. A 2017 blanc de noirs sparkler, made of pinot noir ($59.99), was much sweeter than the blanc de blancs and much less pleasing.

A 2023 viognier ($29.99), was cloying, while a 2022 chardonnay Reserve ($39.99) was an entirely credible version of an oaky, boring American chardonnay. A 2024 rosé ($22.99), made mostly of merlot, was quite nice, with character and structure, while a 2022 Meritage ($39.99), a Bordeaux blend made of cabernet franc, merlot, malbec and petit verdot, was easy to drink and unpretentious.

Pretension arrived in the next wine I tasted, the New World Reserve ($79.99), a similar Bordeaux blend aged in much more new oak and made with significantly sweeter fruit, more veneer than substance. Finally, a 2023 Ellerslie Ice late-harvest sauvignon blanc ($29.99 for a half bottle) — in which the grapes are frozen, then pressed to mimic a traditional ice wine — was syrupy sweet, with little acidity for balance.

The wines are not much different from those offered by dozens of other mainstream American wineries. But you could not tell from the happy throngs of visitors, who seemed far more interested in drinking in the Trump brand than savoring the Trump wine.

Cabo Rojo’s Cruz named Double A Reliever of the Year

Cabo Rojo Piratas pitcher Félix Cruz has been named the 2025 Reliever of the Year in the Double A Superior Baseball League.

The Puerto Rico Baseball Federation announced the selection Wednesday after a vote among journalists and sports commentators.

Cruz accumulated 50 points in a close competition, surpassing Ramesis Rosa of Cayey with 48 points and Luis Omar Dávila of Yabucoa with 47 points. Others who received votes were Kevin Meléndez (Cataño) with 40 points, Luis González (Caguas) with 35, Jorge Charry (Camuy) with 22 and Félix Sánchez (Coamo) with 14.

“It’s extremely special. I never thought I’d achieve something like this,” Cruz said in a written statement. “I feel blessed and grateful to God for putting me on the path of baseball and for giving me the talent I was able to demonstrate this season.”

The 23-year-old pitcher from Guánica led the regular season in saves with seven. In 14.1 innings pitched, he posted a 1.26 ERA and struck out 12 batters.

Cruz arrived in Cabo Rojo this year in a

trade from the Libertadores de Hormigueros. His arrival proved decisive for his performance and consolidation as a closer.

“It’s been a season of ups and downs,” Cruz said. “I didn’t expect to come to Cabo Rojo through a trade, but I don’t regret it. From day one, they gave me their confidence and told me, ‘You’re going to be the closer for this team.’ That motivated me to be where I am today. This team has great chemistry, talented young players, and veterans who always support us, no matter the game situation.”

The reliever dedicated the award to God, his family, and especially his parents. He also expressed his gratitude to Bocho Soto, his pitching coach at Hormigueros and personal mentor.

“I want to dedicate this award to the person who gave me the confidence to be where I am right now: Bocho Soto, who was my pitching coach at Hormigueros and continues to be my coach whenever I need him,” Cruz said.

Besides recognizing Cruz’s excellent performance, the award reinforces the Piratas’ commitment to developing young talent.
