GOOD MORNING

The San Juan Daily Star, the only paper with News Service in English in Puerto Rico, publishes 7 days a week, with a Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday edition, along with a Weekend Edition to cover Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Hundreds of international, local artists to feature works in Poly/ Graphic of Puerto Rico: Latin America and the Caribbean

INDEX

Hundreds of international and Puerto Rican artists will participate in the island’s most significant arts event, the Poly/Graphic of Puerto Rico: Latin America and the Caribbean (PGPR), which will begin on Friday, April 19, the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture (ICP) announced Sunday.

This event, titled “Bajo pressure / Under Pressure,” will take place until September 15 at the Old Arsenal of the Spanish Navy and the gallery in the ICP’s headquarters in Old San Juan. It will also include dozens of other participating museums and galleries.

“We are honored to officially present the Poly/Graphic of Puerto Rico: Latin America and the Caribbean, a varied art exhibition highlighting the imprint of graphics and its experimentations. It is the most relevant art event in Puerto Rico and one of the most anticipated in Latin America and the Caribbean, and we will have over a hundred participating artists. This edition, in addition to being a great celebration for art lovers, thanks to Governor Pedro R. Pierluisi’s allocation of ARPA funds, has allowed us to financially support cultural organizations, museums, art projects, and artists. We welcome all the representatives of the participating countries to this important artistic meeting by including a diversity of artistic media and languages,” said Carlos Ruiz Cortés, executive director of the ICP.

The event has not been held in Puerto Rico since 2016.

The Poly/Graphic of Puerto Rico: Latin America and the Caribbean is part of the evolution of the San Juan Biennial of Latin American and Caribbean Engraving, and the Poli/Graphic Triennial of San Juan: Latin America and the Caribbean.

The artistic event is the longest-running visual arts project in Puerto Rico and was designated as an official activity of the Government with the approval of Law No. 512 of 2004.

This year’s event features Elvis Fuentes, chief curator, art historian, and director of the Coral Gables Museum in Miami, and Lisa Ladner, curator and cultural manager, as curator for Puerto Rico. Fuentes and Ladner have collaborated for more than a year to ensure a balanced and meaningful representation of the diverse perspectives and realities present in contempo-

rary art from Puerto Rico, Latin America, and the Caribbean.

The project includes seven other exhibits at museums, nonprofit organizations, and community-based art projects using funding from the Cultural Rescue Program and ARPA (American Rescue Plan).

“This edition commemorates 54 years since the first celebration of the San Juan Biennial of Latin American Engraving, a meeting that brings to the fore the voices and perspectives of the plastic artists of Puerto Rico, Latin America and the Caribbean, who make up the curatorial selection. In total, 103 individual and collective artists are participating, through the ‘Bajo Presión/Under Pressure’ proposal, to connect with visitors and stimulate new currents of thought. Beyond being a bridge between our archipelago, the Antilles, and Latin America, Puerto Rico resumes a vital project for strengthening our visual arts sector, the art market, and the recognition of local artistic talent. It also opens new opportunities for participating artists and for all professionals of our ecosystem during the more than four months of Poli/Gráfica. Its exhibitions at the ICP will be free of cost, and educational and accessible workshops will be offered as part of the calendar,” said María del Mar Caragol Rivera, director of the ICP Plastic Arts Program.

In addition to the two exhibition venues at the ICP, “Bajo pressure / Under Pressure” will have a series of commissions and artistic projects around Puerto Rico, educational workshops throughout the archipelago and over 50 satellite exhibitions. In addition, a symposium will be held, and a catalog of the participating works and artists will be published. The event will highlight more than 300 local and international works which explore the existential, economic, and sociopolitical pressures of those living in the world’s Western Hemisphere.

The Latin American countries represented in this important art meeting are Argentina, Chile, Paraguay, Brazil, Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia, Venezuela, Mexico, Honduras, Guatemala, Nicaragua, and Colombia. Likewise, the Caribbean will be present with artists from Cuba, Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, and the Bahamas.

Other places in the metropolitan area that the public can visit to enjoy subsidized exhibitions are the Museum of Art of Puerto Rico, Museum of Contemporary Art, the Miramar Museum of Art and Design and the 5th Chiringas Festival, Portrait of La Perla in Old San Juan. Likewise, outside the metropolitan area, the Ponce Art Museum, the Afro Corridor in Loíza and the Porta Coeli Museum and Church were subsidized, with the vision of Antonio Martorell and a collective of artists.

Among the cultural entities that come together with satellite activities and exhibitions are the Museum of Art, History and Anthropology of the University of Puerto Rico (UPR) in Río Piedras, the MUSA – Museum of Art of the UPR in Mayagüez, Museo Dr. Pío López Martínez of the UPR in Cayey, Museum of Art and History of San Juan, School of Plastic Arts and Design of Puerto Rico, Art League of San Juan, Museum of the Americas, Women of the Island in Culebra, Museum City in Añasco and many other initiatives.

Senator urges approval of nutritional label legislation

Within the framework of International Health Day, Senate Health Committee Chairman Rubén Soto Rivera urged the House Sunday to bring to a vote House Bill 766, the “Nutritional Warning Labels Act,” which has been lingering in the Rules and Calendar Committee since March 2023.

“On this day, people are educated about the importance of everyone having access to a healthy life. One of the objectives of this bill is to

make essential information about the products that can affect or hinder their health accessible to consumers. It is regrettable that since March 2023, this significant bill has been sleeping the sleep of the righteous in the Senate, which is why I insist that it is time to schedule a date to see it in the plenary session and approve it,” explained the District of Arecibo senator. Soto Rivera explained that this legislation would empower consumers through information and ensure that food products high in sugar, calories, saturated fat, and sodium are

properly identified on their labels.

“Bill 766 not only seeks to implement a clear and accessible labeling system but also establishes a strong public policy in favor of education about healthy eating. This senator is committed to promoting an informed citizenry aware of their dietary decisions, thus contributing to the prevention of chronic diseases and improving the quality of life of our people,” he said.

The senator emphasized that the legislation is a step forward in fighting for a healthier

Police leader expresses concern about proposed surveillance cameras

The president of the Association of Members of the Puerto Rico Police, José J. Taboada De Jesús, expressed concern about the governor’s plan to install 50,000 electronic surveillance cameras in high-crime areas as they could potentially be used to spy on citizens.

The police leader asked Governor Pedro Pierluisi to appoint a special commission to discuss and work with the criminal surveillance strategy and the use of artificial intelligence to capture digital images of citizen behavior.

“The Association of Members of the Puerto Rico Police raises a “red flag” in response to the announcement made by the directors of the country’s Security Forces, in reaction to the murder of police officer Eliezer Ramos in the problematic Sabana Abajo Public Housing project in Carolina. Our organization supports the use of artificial intelligence, including surveillance cameras or any legal method or tool available to combat and prevent crime. However, with all the past experiences in this country, we must plan and update a strategy before carrying out the project,” he said.

Before awarding a tender for the cameras, he said the

Government must create a Special Commission that includes members of the Civil Rights Commission, members of Faith Base organizations, retired Police colleagues, military personnel who have worked in the area of security in the Armed Forces, prosecutors from the Department of Justice, security employees in the Correctional System, agents of the Police Bureau in charge of electronic surveillance and others.

The group of experts will suggest the type of digital electronic device the government should install, he said.

He said none of the installed cameras should point toward a specific residence or business door.

“I oppose any action or method of using Government surveillance cameras to recreate the entry and exit of a residence or business. The Government cannot “record the movement of its citizens without reason unless a court issues an order for such purposes,” he said.

“Let it be clear that the Police Members Association does not sponsor the surveillance of any citizen without any reason. If this occurs, it violates citizens’ rights to privacy and free movement. Knowing the creativity of the senior government officials, we must make this warning,” he said.

Electric system improving says governor

Following the University of Colorado researchers’ forecast that the 2024 hurricane season will be “extremely active,” Gov. Pedro Rafael Pierluisi Urrutia said Friday that the electrical system “still leaves a lot to be desired, but it is better than last year.”

“Our electrical system leaves a lot to be said. But it’s being rebuilt. It is gradually being strengthened. Today it is more stable than last year. We had a situation on Saturday night, in several hours, subscribers, about 200,000 subscribers without service, because two plants failed. But the next day the situation was corrected and it has not happened again. And that hadn’t happened in more than six months. In other words, the system is much more stable than it was the previous year. And so it should be, because this improvement in the electrical system is going to be gradual. It’s going to take many years. Because obviously it’s a system that was broken after Maria. Apart from the fact that it already suffered from a flaw of yesteryear,” the governor said in

response to questions from the press.

Regarding the preparation process for the hurricane season, the governor said that “the Emergency Management Bureau, led by Nino Correa, is constantly taking steps to ensure that at all levels, at the central government level and at the municipal level, we have work and response plans properly outlined. And in these coming months, as we always do, there will be preparation workshops. And so it will be. In other words, if we look at the resources we have, all the time is more, that is, in terms of the inventory we have in the energy sector, in the electricity system sector, it is greater than what we had before. Similarly, in the area of aqueduct and sewerage, we have more and more generators available to power treatment plants, filtration plants, pump stations. In other words, everything has been improving. In the emergency fund, it is higher, because we continue to make contributions. Of course, what is missing are the workshops that are always given. They usually happen, the main workshop that I attend, always happens in the month of May. So I don’t know if it’s scheduled yet, when it’s scheduled, we’ll let the media know.”

society.

“It is our duty as legislators to protect and promote the well-being of our citizens and not allow ourselves to be convinced by people who seek to benefit large companies that would be greatly affected by the approval of this measure. We know that the big interests do not want this law to be approved. Still, we senators must set an example, and we must approve this law to send the clear message that the health of our people is a priority,” he concluded.

The government plans to install 50,000 electronic surveillance cameras in high-crime areas.

on people based on their political convictions.

Likewise, the Police Members Association expressed its concern about the proliferation of surveillance cameras in businesses and residences, whose angle of observation is often unknown. He suggested creating and publishing an official regulation and registry to allow the installation of surveillance cameras outside a home, business, church or any type of public or private structure.

The use and installation of an external electronic surveillance camera must be associated with the public availability of the collected data so that any affected citizen must have access to the recording made at a given time. The regulation to be created must contain the immediate provision of what was recorded, and if it is not provided, the owner or operator of the system must be sanctioned.

Regarding the decentralization of the Department of Education, he said that “the closest goal is that by the beginning of the next academic semester, August, we will have at least one LEA, that is, a local educational entity that has direct access to federal funds and has a structure that allows it to make decisions in its region. In other words, it is taking the concept of the ORE, the Regional Educational Office, to another level. When we talk about LEA, it is an entity that has, for example, its own legal division. Its own human resources division. Its own purchasing division. Because then the purchases are carried out in the region or locality. And its own federal funding team to access federal funds. It’s another concept. It’s basically having the Department of Education overseeing the LEAs. That is to say, they are educational but empowered regions. Who have direct access to federal funds. This is not currently the case. There are currently seven OREs and one Department. But the Department pretty much controls everything. Starting in August, we will be decentralizing at least one region. Not necessarily with the same conformation as the seven OREs of today. It’s a change. A region that is going to be called LEA. Local Education Agency. It will be well underway. Something that leaves out the answer that is important. A regulation was submitted for approval in the legislature. That it is a regulation that is required by Law 85.”

Land Authority seeks budget hike

With an outstanding public debt of $40.6 million, the Land Authority asked the House of Representatives Treasury Committee for $12 million to continue its operations during the 2024-2025 fiscal year.

The agency explained in recent hearings that the amount represents an increase of more than $5 million to the $6.8 million budget recommended by the Financial Oversight and Management Board (fOMB).

“For the agency to operate efficiently and comply with public policy and programmatic commitments, it is essential that we approve the budget submitted to the Office of Management and Budget (OGP) for the fiscal year 2024-2025,” said Land Authority Director Irving Rodríguez Torres, who was accompanied by the Secretary of the Department of Agriculture, Ramón González Beiró.

Rodríguez Torres explained that the outstanding debts to be paid as of February 28, 2024, are first broken down into $7.4 million with the Environmental Protection Agency from fines the agency must pay.

González Beiró indicated that past administrations agreed to settle the debts acquired in three cases, but “they did not do so, and that has continued to accumulate.”

The Authority also owes $11.7 million to the Municipal Revenue Collection Center (CRIM) due to increased

cadastral numbers, even though the court exempted the agency from paying for its land a few years ago. The list that was presented at that time with the cadastre numbers has never been purged, Rodríguez Torres commented.

Officials detailed that the Authority had paid up to $2 million in debt, but the court withheld the money. “What remains there is what was pending in the lawsuit. There was an amount of money deposited in the court and the last effort was to release that and pass it on to the CRIM,” González Beiró clarified.

The Authority also has a debt of $2.4 million with the Innovation Fund for Agricultural Development (FIDA) and another $18.9 million with the PayGo direct payment system for pension obligations.

Rodríguez Torres highlighted that the agency generates its own funds from land leases with agricultural development, bank interests, royalties, sales of non-agricultural land, among other rentals. It also receives 5% of the allocations from Law 173-2020.

The agronomist explained that the agency faces economic challenges, which is why he asked the Board for an increase of $1.5 million to the budget for the current fiscal year, which the federal agency approved on March 11. This additional item raised the budget to $11.6 million, with a spending projection of 100% by June 30.

González Beiró informed the House committee that

Senate holds roundtable on drownings

As part of an initiative by the chairman of the Committee on Education, Tourism and Culture, Ada García Montes, the Puerto Rico Senate held a roundtable discussion Friday with several heads of agencies with a view to creating legislation to prevent drowning deaths on the country’s beaches.

“We convened several agencies and organizations to sit down to exchange information on measures that can be implemented in order to prevent people from drowning on the country’s beaches. This decision arises after the analysis of Senate Bill 762 in the face of the discrepancy between the agencies and other entities on how to address the issue,” said García Montes.

Senate Bill 762, authored by Senator Nitza Morán Trini-

dad, seeks to amend Article 4 of Act No. 10 of June 18, 1970, as amended, known as the “Law of the Office of Tourism of the Department of Economic Development and Commerce of the Government of Puerto Rico,” with the purpose of requiring that all lodgings and inns located in front of the beach or the sea, provide information to visitors about sea and weather conditions and have lifeguards during daylight hours; and make technical corrections.

The discussion was attended by the Secretary of the Department of Natural and Environmental Resources (DNER), Anaís Rodríguez Vega; the commissioner of the Bureau of Emergency Management and Disaster Administration (NMEAD), Nino Correa Filomeno; and the president of the Puerto Rico Hotel and Tourism Association, Clarisa Jimenez.

“It’s a potential danger that you don’t see, but it’s there,” said NMEAD Commissioner Correa Filomeno, who referred to the strong ocean currents that are currently being recorded on the north coast of Puerto Rico and which have caused an increase in drownings of people, mostly tourists, on the country’s beaches.

For her part, the secretary of the DNER said that “the statistics are there and Nino Correa can confirm it, most of the drownings are tourists.” Rodríguez Vega explained that the hotel sector has let it be known that signs that communicate that certain coastal bodies of water are not suitable for bathers make their areas ugly, so they remove them.

However, the president of the Puerto Rico Hotel and Tourism Association responded to Rodríguez Vega that during his presidential tenure at the agency she was not aware of these claims. “It bothers whoever it bothers, but it is the only solution to inform those who visit the beaches,” Jimenez added to the table, who also said that regulated hotels, as well as those under their command, receive information through email bulletins

The head of Agriculture, Ramón González Beiró, assured that the agency has addressed the deficiencies publicly pointed out by Comptroller Yesmín Valdivieso.

the Authority has not yet received the audit report sent by the Comptroller’s Office on the use of funds from the Rural Infrastructure and Permanent Improvements Program and has not received an official communication that breaks down the failures.

The head of Agriculture assured, however, that the agency has addressed the deficiencies publicly pointed out by Comptroller Yesmín Valdivieso.

“Those flaws that she points out are the ones that I pointed out. She made referrals to Justice. I sued two entities to recover money. We did the work. We did everything she mentioned two years ago,” said González Beiró, while affirming that the allegations submitted to Justice were referred to the Panel on the Special Independent Prosecutor (PFEI).

The discussion was attended by the secretary of DNER, Anaís Rodríguez Vega; the commissioner of the Bureau of NMEAD, Nino Correa Filomeno; and the president of the PRHTA, Clarisa Jimenez.

and also by hotel staff.

During the dialogue, Senator Morán Trinidad expressed concern regarding unregulated accommodations where tourists may not receive information about inclement weather in the country.

Currently in Puerto Rico there are 154 endorsed lodgings, which comply with all the regulations and permits of the Tourism Company, while over 2,000 lodgings around the island are unregulated.

As a result of the unfortunate drowning deaths and misinformation, the NMEAD commissioner shared that, in collaboration with several agencies, an alert is being developed, similar to those received when a person is reported missing, which will inform all people within the coastal danger district about the maritime conditions at the site. This alert would reach any mobile device within the danger radar, regardless of whether the person is a tourist or a resident.

“It is the government’s responsibility to prevent people from drowning on the country’s public beaches, therefore, I am hopeful that this communication exercise will result in identifying a real alternative to address the problem. With this, I also hope to achieve the creation of legislation that is endorsed by the parties,” García Montes concluded.

For several hours Saturday evening, drivers on a typically scenic stretch of Palm Beach, Florida, had their views of the coast obscured by a line of luxury vehicles whose owners were mingling inside a mansion across the road.

The shoreline-blocking Range Rovers, Aston Martins and Bentleys hinted at the deep-pocketed donors attending a fundraising dinner for former President Donald Trump’s presidential campaign, which it and the Republican National Committee said had raised more than $50.5 million.

The event, hosted by billionaire John Paulson at his home, followed a concerted push by the Trump campaign to address a long-standing financial disparity with President Joe Biden and Democrats as both parties gear up for the general election.

The reported total, which cannot be independently verified ahead of campaign finance filings in the coming months, is nearly double the $26 million that Biden’s campaign said it raised last month at a celebrity-studded event at Radio City Music Hall in New York City.

Susie Wiles and Chris LaCivita, senior advisers to the former president who are effectively his campaign managers, said in a statement that the total made it “clearer than ever that we have the message, the operation and the money to propel President Trump to victory on November 5.”

Trump’s event, just down the road from his home at Mar-a-Lago, was in some ways a less flashy affair than its Democratic antecedent, one that traded Hollywood star power and New York City energy for a warmer clime, an abundance of palm trees and the manicured lawns typical of an island refuge for the moneyed elite.

But expectations before the dinner were high, with Paulson and Trump campaign advisers vowing to outdo the Biden event. An invitation obtained by The New York Times suggested a contribution of $814,600 or the comparatively more modest $250,000.

The money raised, according to the invitation, will be directed to the Trump 47 Committee, a shared fundraising agreement among the Trump campaign, the Republican National Committee and roughly 40 state parties. Such joint accounts can take in checks of as much as $814,600.

Trump, who has long had a penchant for superlatives, had predicted on his social media site, Truth Social, that the dinner would be the “biggest night in Fund Raising of ALL TIME!!!”

The former president arrived shortly before 7 p.m. with his wife, Melania Trump, who has made sparse appearances at political events during her husband’s third

presidential campaign. “This has been some incredible evening before it even starts,” Trump said before posing for a photo with Paulson and entering the house.

Around 100 people were expected to attend the dinner, with a number of billionaires on the guest list.

Among the event’s co-chairs were familiar megadonors and Trump allies, including Rebekah Mercer, a major donor to Trump in 2016; Linda McMahon, a former Trump Cabinet official; and Robert Bigelow, who backed Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida in the Republican primary but in February donated $5 million to Trump’s super political action committee.

Not all of those who wrote checks opted to attend. John Catsimatidis, a New York grocery store chain owner with a long history with Trump, was a co-chair of the event but said other commitments kept him from being present.

Under the shared fundraising agreement, the first $6,600 of any contribution will go to Trump’s campaign. The next $5,000 will go to his Save America PAC, the

campaign says

political account he has used to pay his legal bills. (That amount is the maximum contribution allowed to Save America under federal rules.) The RNC will get the next $413,000, and then will come dozens of state parties.

Trump and his team have effectively taken over the RNC, installing new leadership, pushing through layoffs and restructuring the national party’s operations to align it more closely with the campaign.

Fundraising has been a major focus of the overhaul, particularly as Biden and Democrats have banked cash and built a significant financial advantage over the last several months.

The Biden campaign said earlier Saturday that it, the Democratic Party and affiliated committees had raised more than $90 million in March, and that together they had $192 million on hand going into April. The Trump campaign said it and the Republican National Committee had raised $65.6 million in March, the former president’s best fundraising month so far, and that they, along with their shared accounts, had $93.1 million on hand.

Biden’s campaign manager, Julie Chavez Rodriguez, said in a statement that the Democratic fundraising numbers stood in “stark contrast to Trump’s cash-strapped operation.”

Biden’s totals were helped in part by the glamorous event in front of 5,000 donors at the storied Radio City Music Hall. Biden and two of his Democratic predecessors, former Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton, were interviewed by late-night host and comedian Stephen Colbert.

A number of musical guests, including Queen Latifah, Lizzo and Lea Michele, entertained the crowd. The special guests billed on the invitation for the Trump fundraiser were three of his former primary rivals who have since become campaign surrogates and joined him on the trail: Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina, Gov. Doug Burgum of North Dakota and Vivek Ramaswamy, a tech entrepreneur.

Gazing at the sky, awaiting a moment of awe

The moment she saw the sun, something inside Julie McKelvey changed.

She was hanging from a rope on the side of Mount Everest, four hours from the summit. The night was frozen, the slope some 60 degrees steep, the oxygen thin as she ascended to the highest point on Earth. In the dark, she felt the fear and power of the mountain. She focused on exactly where to put her foot, her hand, alongside her fellow climbers.

Then, peripherally to her right, she saw an orange flash.

“I see this sunrise that I will never forget as long as I live,” she reflected. “The colors — it is just red, and then it is orange, and then it is yellow, and then the blue is coming. It was so incredibly spiritual for me, and beautiful.”

McKelvey, a mother and executive from central Pennsylvania, searched for words to capture the emotion of that moment. She felt so connected with something so much bigger than herself, something that she believed loved her.

“The whole thing is very awe-ful. A-w-e,” she said.

Millions of people are hoping for their own sun-powered experience of awe Monday. A total solar eclipse will sweep across North America, from Mazatlán, Mexico, up through Indiana to Newfoundland. More than 30 million people live in the path of totality, where for a few minutes the moon will entirely block out the sun, and darkness will swallow the light of day. A halo will glow white behind the moon, the sun’s corona.

Amid the rush to purchase eclipse glasses to protect one’s eyes and to check if clouds will disrupt the view, a deeper human experience is unfolding. The eclipse taps into a primal emotion, and evokes for many a sort of mystical moment and childlike wonder as awareness of the celestial encompasses Earth. It is a reminder to everyone, on the same day, that life can be magical.

For a nation pulled apart by every manner of division, the eclipse and the awe it inspires offer a moment of unity, if brief. It is a reminder of the collective experience of being alive, of the dance between spirituality and science, and the sheer astonishment at being part of the greater story of things.

“Astronomical phenomena have probably likely always been a source of awe and fear, from ever since Homo sapiens could stand upright and look at the night sky,” said Priyamvada Natarajan, a professor of astronomy at Yale University. “In these really turbulent times, these experiences of collective awe are probably extremely helpful in showing us to transcend the

day-to-day noise and chaos of our lives, and of nations’ lives.”

In ancient days, communities in India believed an eclipse was a demon swallowing the sun, Natarajan said. But now an eclipse is an opportunity to pay homage to the explanatory power of science. And in modern secular society, it offers a sense of belonging, a collective moment like the religious expression of prayer and gratitude.

“The question is about transcendence,” she said.

Even NASA, in its scientific, moment-by-moment breakdown of the eclipse, urges “stealing a peek at the people around you — many people have a deep emotional response when the sun goes into totality.”

The Rev. Guy Consolmagno, director of the Vatican Observatory, the pope’s official astronomical institute that dates to the Renaissance, hopes to see the eclipse from Indiana through his small Celestron binoculars.

He remembered the feeling of awe he felt returning from Antarctica and being able to see the Eta Carinae nebula for the first time. And the moment in the lab studying meteorites when he saw a pattern in the data that he had never before seen.

“The universe is elegant, it is beautiful, and it’s beautiful in a way that surprises you,” Consolmagno said. “Maybe it’s a sense of what God is like.”

The semantics of “awe” are linked to fear, but awe is actually a positive emotion, said Dacher Keltner, a psychologist at the University of California, Berkeley, who wrote a book on awe.

“Awe is an emotion when you encounter things you don’t understand,” he said. “Wonder follows experiences of awe because you want to explain the mystery of it.”

The sense of the transcendence in religion is not that different from what he sees as a scientist in encountering evolution. “We are probably talking about the same experience,” Keltner said.

Today, half of U.S. adults report feelings of loneliness, and technology disconnects people from lived physicality of the human experience. Virtual realities promised an “awesome” future but have not delivered, Keltner said, and people are hungry for something more, for transcendent emotions, for a sense of loss of self.

“There is something profound about sharing our awareness of meaningful events,” he said.

Ancient Sanskrit texts like the Bhagavad Gita mention “adbhuta,” describing an expression of awe and wonder that is scary, said Deepak Sarma, professor of Indian religions and philosophy at Case Western Reserve University. Even though adbhuta has something fearful in it, it is beautiful.

“Maybe something that is wonderful ought to be something feared,” Sarma said.

Awe is found not just in the skies. The eclipse will not pass over Arizona, but at the bottom of the Grand Canyon, Sarah Haas, deputy chief of science and resource management for the national park, is filled with awe looking up from the Colorado River.

“You are getting a snapshot from the bottom of the Earth, looking back, the colors and the sky, from the river,” she said. “There is something very

An undated image of a dress in movement above blurred legs running through a field of tall stalks of grass that have gone to seed and are colored by golden sunlight. connecting to the soul about that experience.”

Away from technology and cellphone service, there is a sense of being part of the story of the canyon, carved over millions of years. Haas feels it in the smell of being in the riparian zone at the river’s edge, in the sight of how the red boulders have landed over time and in the surprises of water coming up from springs.

“The river is this living entity that is moving and adjusting over time, and you are just on the ride of that day’s experience of the river and the rocks and the rapids,” she said.

When a group leaves to travel down the river, it quickly becomes self-reliant, and strangers become family, dependent on one another for survival, Haas said.

“You have to keep in mind there are things that could hurt you, or things the canyon needs to do to evolve and to grow that you have to be aware of, like, flash flooding or rockfalls,” she said.

A year after she climbed Mount Everest, McKelvey is still unpacking the emotion. She recently finished another summit, becoming one of few women in the world to top the highest peaks on all seven continents.

Like the experience of the eclipse’s totality, which lasts only a few minutes, her time at the summit of Everest was brief, maybe just 20 minutes, she said. Perhaps that may be part of the revelation.

“What I am realizing is, it was the process the whole time. It was never about the top of any of the mountains,” McKelvey said.

Most awe-inspiring of all was simply being present to the moment, both to the world and to those around her as they suffered together in the cold and cheered each another on, she said.

“That is where the magic is,” she said. “I’m not living in the past, I’m not living in the future … I am just here.”

US Stocks’ lofty valuations in spotlight as earnings season nears

The U.S. stock market is the most expensive it has been in around two years. Its valuation could be put to the test as companies report earnings in coming weeks.

The S&P 500 is up more than 9% year-to-date, following its strongest first-quarter performance since 2019. But the bar may be rising for stocks to keep advancing at that pace, increasing pressure on companies to deliver strong results.

The benchmark index trades at 20.7 times its estimated earnings for the next 12 months, near a more than two-year high of 21.2 hit in late March, according to LSEG Datastream. Unremarkable earnings growth could give investors less reason to hold onto stocks, at a time when elevated yields on Treasuries bolster the attractiveness of bonds.

Investors will also listen for companies’ views on the economy and inflation, to gauge whether the so-called Goldilocks environment of resilient growth and cooling consumer prices can continue.

Signs of stubborn inflation have diminished expectations in recent weeks for how deeply the Federal Reserve will cut rates this year. Stocks rose after another strongerthan-expected employment report on Friday.

“If we’re going to continue to make significant gains in the stock market, we have to not just meet, but probably exceed ... what those estimates are for earnings,” said Yung-Yu Ma, chief investment officer at BMO Wealth Management.

Delta Air Lines, BlackRock, and JPMorgan Chase & Co are among the companies scheduled to release their first quarter results next week. Investors will also be watching for March U.S. consumer price data, expected on April 10.

Analysts expect to see earnings growth of 5% in the first quarter, according to LSEG data. That would be the lowest since the second quarter of 2023. They expect margins to be squeezed by high interest rates, rising commodity costs, and falling corporate pricing power due to slowing inflation. Earnings grew by 10.1% in the fourth quarter of 2023.

The results of megacaps such as Nvidia, Meta Platforms and Microsoft could be key for investor sentiment, following a divergence in the share price performance of the so-called Magnificent Seven stocks that led markets higher last year.

Chipmaker Nvidia, for instance, is up 78% in 2024, while Tesla shares have fallen over 30% due to concerns over its margins and demand. The electric vehicle maker has canceled the long-promised inexpensive car that investors have been counting on to drive its growth into a mass-market automaker, Reuters reported on Friday.

“These businesses now need to justify these high

MOST ASSERTIVE STOCKS

valuations,” said Bryant VanCronkhite, a portfolio manager at Allspring Global Investments. “The market is looking for every company to talk about their demand drivers and articulate what they see coming ahead.”

At the same time, investors will be watching whether evidence of continuing strength in the U.S. economy flows through to rising revenues and earnings for industrial, energy, and other sectors that are closely tied to growth.

Shares of these companies have largely performed well this year in a rally that has spread beyond technology and growth names.

jobs last month, far above expectations. Futures markets show investors expect the Fed to deliver around 70 basis points of rate cuts this year, compared to 150 basis points they had factored in January.

Yet weaker earnings could indicate cracks in the economy’s strength. Some investors believe that could boost the case for the Fed to ease monetary policy.

“That bad news could actually be good news for the market because it leads to those Fed rate cuts that everyone is hoping for,” said Kevin Mahn, chief investment officer at Hennion & Walsh Asset Management.

Israel withdraws a division of troops from Southern Gaza

The Israeli military said it withdrew a division of ground troops from the southern Gaza Strip on Sunday, raising questions about its plans as the war reached the six-month mark.

Israel has significantly reduced the number of troops it has on the ground in Gaza over the past several months. Only a fraction of the soldiers that it had deployed in the territory earlier in the war remain.

The army said that the 98th Division had left Khan Younis in southern Gaza in order “to recuperate and prepare for future operations.” Israeli news media reported that the withdrawal of the 98th meant there were no Israeli troops actively maneuvering in southern Gaza.

It was unclear what the latest drawdown of forces meant for the prospect of an Israeli ground offensive in Rafah, Gaza’s southernmost city. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to invade the city, despite warnings from the Biden administration that a ground invasion would be catastrophic for the more than 1 million Palestinians sheltering there.

On Sunday, Netanyahu said that Israel was determi-

ned to “complete the elimination of Hamas in all of the Gaza Strip, including Rafah.”

The army said that its forces would remain in other parts of Gaza to preserve its “freedom of action and its ability to conduct precise intelligence-based operations.”

Osama Asfour, 41, a resident of Khan Younis who is sheltering in a tent in Rafah, said the army’s announcement did not make him want to return to his city — and his destroyed home — anytime soon.

“The military might say it left today, but they can come back tomorrow,” Asfour, who had worked at the Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, said in an interview. “I’m not going to go on an adventure with my life and my family’s lives.”

Even so, Ahmed al-Soufi, a local official in Rafah, said he had noticed some displaced people in the city were returning to Khan Younis on Sunday.

A senior White House official said he was uncertain what the withdrawal of the 98th division meant for the future of the war.

“It’s hard to know exactly what that tells us right now,” John Kirby, a White House national security spokesperson, said on ABC’s “This Week.” “As we understand it, and

through their public announcements, it is really just about rest and refit for these troops that have been on the ground for four months, and not necessarily, that we can tell, indicative of some coming new operation for these troops.”

The departure of the 98th came about four months after Israeli forces invaded southern Gaza. Since the start of the war, the army has returned to areas of Gaza that its forces had previously left, especially in the north. Military officials have said that Hamas has tried to reestablish itself in parts of the north in the wake of Israel’s withdrawals.

Last week, the military pulled back from Shifa Hospital in the north after a two-week-long operation. It had first raided the hospital in November. This time the troops left behind what appeared to be a wasteland following extended gunbattles with Palestinian militants in and around the complex.

Mohammed Radi, 36, a displaced restaurateur from Gaza City who has been sheltering in Rafah with his family, said he was tired of the news about Palestinians in the enclave being killed and, more than anything, wanted the war to end.

“I feel frustrated and mentally crushed,” he said in an interview. “We are exhausted after six months in tents.”

Pro-Russia candidate wins Slovakia’s presidential election

Voters in Slovakia on Saturday strengthened the grip of Russia-friendly political forces in central Europe, handing victory in a presidential election to a candidate who opposes providing military and financial aid to Ukraine.

With 99% of the votes counted, the official tally showed Peter Pellegrini, an ally of Slovakia’s populist prime minister, Robert Fico, the winner with 53% of the vote in a presidential runoff. Despite the presidency’s limited powers in Slovakia, the election was widely watched as a test of strength between political camps with starkly different views on Russia.

The defeated candidate, former Foreign Minister Ivan Korcok, is a stalwart supporter of Ukraine and critic of Fico, a pugnacious veteran politician who has aligned with Prime Minister Viktor Orban of Hungary in opposing aid to Ukraine and challenging mainstream opinions within the European Union.

With Fico at his side, Pellegrini declared victory early Sunday, soon after Korcok conceded defeat.

Korcok came first among nine candidates in an initial round of voting March 23, but he lost in Saturday’s faceoff with Pellegrini, who appears to have picked up votes that in the first round went to an anti-NATO nationalist who finished third.

In the campaign leading up to the vote, Pellegrini copied tactics used by Orban during an election in 2022 in Hungary, in which his governing party falsely claimed that the main opposition leader wanted to send

Hungarian soldiers to fight against Russia in Ukraine. Pellegrini used the same smear against Korcok, casting him as a warmonger intent on sending Slovak troops into Ukraine.

Korcok insisted that he had no such plan — which is not something a Slovak president has the power to carry out, anyway — but he had trouble breaking through a miasma of disinformation pumped out by pro-Russia

websites and social media accounts. His defeat is a big boost for Fico, who can now pursue his agenda without interference from the presidency. That is a marked shift from the tenure of the departing president, Zuzana Caputova, an outspoken, proWestern liberal who used her limited powers to resist Fico’s drift toward Russia and his efforts to limit the judiciary’s ability to pro-

secute corruption. She did not run for a new term, saying that she was exhausted “from the professional and human point of view.”

Restrained by Caputova, Fico refrained from confronting fellow leaders over Ukraine during EU summits in Brussels. The election of Pellegrini, however, could lead to a more confrontational approach like that of Hungary, the European bloc’s inveterate dissident.

In public statements, Fico has joined Orban in pushing for what he describes as “peace” in Ukraine, arguing that the war will drag on indefinitely without a swift negotiated settlement. Ukraine and its Western backers consider an end to the war impossible unless Russia gives up occupied territory.

Korcok, a career diplomat who served as Slovakia’s ambassador to Washington from 2018 to 2020, has dismissed calls for immediate “peace” as a surrender to Russia’s goal of hanging on to Ukrainian land. He supports the stance that providing military and financial support to Ukraine is the only way to bring a lasting end to the conflict.

Fico, a veteran politician who ended an earlier stint as prime minister by resigning in 2018 amid a swirl of corruption accusations, has also followed Orban in trying to neuter the judiciary and in casting supporters of Ukraine as disloyal lackeys of the United States.

Fico returned to power after a general election in September, reviving a political career that many had considered over when he quit amid large street protests after the killing of an investigative journalist who had been looking into government graft.

The appalling tactics of the ‘free Palestine’ movement

Last week, Susanne DeWitt, an 89-year-old Holocaust survivor who later became a molecular biologist, spoke before the Berkeley, California, City Council to request a Holocaust Remembrance Day proclamation. After taking note of a “horrendous surge in antisemitism,” she was then heckled and shouted down by protesters at the meeting when she mentioned the massacre and rapes in Israel of Oct. 7.

At the same meeting, a woman testified that her 7-yearold Jewish son heard “a group of kids at his school say, ‘Jews are stupid.’” She, too, was heckled: “Zionists are stupider,” a protester said. At the same meeting, others yelled, “cowards, go chase the money, you money suckers” and “you are traitors to this country, you are spies for Israel.”

Protest movements have an honorable place in American history. But not all of them. Not the neo-Nazis who marched in Chicago in 1978. Not the white supremacists who chanted “Jews will not replace us” at their Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, in 2017.

And not too much of what passes for a pro-Palestinian movement but is really pro-Hamas, with its calls to get rid of the Jewish state in its entirety (“from the river to the sea …”), its open celebration of the murder of its people (“resistance is justified …”) and its efforts to mock, minimize or deny the suffering of Israelis, which so quickly descend into the antisemitism on naked display in Berkeley.

How did this happen?

It wasn’t a response to the human suffering in the Gaza Strip in recent months. A coalition of Harvard student groups issued a statement on Oct. 7 holding “the Israeli regime entirely responsible for all unfolding violence.” Pro-Hamas demonstrations broke out worldwide on Oct. 8. A Black Lives Matter chapter posted a graphic on Instagram of the Hamas paragliders who murdered hundreds of young Israelis at the Nova music festival. A Cornell professor said he found the massacre “exhilarating,” and demonstrators rallied in his support.

Nor is it a matter of seeking a Palestinian state — another fact the demonstrators openly avow. Among the popular chants at many protests is “We don’t want no two states! We want all of ’48!” — all of what had been Mandatory Palestine before the creation of Israel. Israeli soldiers and settlers vacated Gaza almost 20 years ago. The towns and kibbutzim that Hamas invaded on Oct. 7 are only “occupied” if one believes that all of Israel, in any kind of border, is a form of occupation.

In other words, the central, animating sentiment behind much of the protest movement is neither humanitarian nor liberationist. It’s eliminationist. And it expresses itself routinely in the tactics adopted by so many of its leading activists and followers.

Tactics like the grotesque and routine removal or defacement of posters of Israelis kidnapped to Gaza. Or holding a loud and aggressive demonstration outside New York’s Memorial Sloan Kettering cancer hospital (“Make sure they hear you, they’re in the windows,” said one of the protest leaders), apparently because the hospital has collaborated with Israeli medical institutions. Or forcing a Jewish teacher at a public school in Queens to flee her classroom for safety as hundreds of teenagers rioted through the school, some waving Palestinian flags. Or shouting down Rep. Jamie Raskin at the University of Maryland for being “complicit in genocide” when he came to the campus to give a talk on democracy and “the threat to reason in the 21st century.” Or surrounding a theater at the University of California at Berkeley that was supposed to host a talk by an Israeli lawyer, smashing windows, breaking through locked doors, spitting on and grabbing at least one student by the neck and forcing Jewish students to flee through an underground exit.

This is only a partial list. But it reveals the bullying mentality at the heart of the pro-Hamas movement. It isn’t enough for them to speak out; they must shut other voices down. It isn’t enough for them to make a strong or clear argument; they also aim to instill a palpable sense of fear in their opponents. American civil libertarians of the past

once understood that inherent in the right to protest was the obligation to respect the right of people with differing views to protest as well. That understanding seems to be wholly absent from the people who think that, say, heckling Raskin into silence is also a form of democracy.

In this sense, critics of Israel who claim that American Jews must choose between Zionism and liberalism have it backward. The illiberals aren’t the people defending the right of an imperfect but embattled democracy to defend its territory and save its hostages. They are the people who, like former Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, want Israel wiped off the map and aren’t ashamed to say so. Not surprisingly, they also seem to share Ahmadinejad’s attitudes toward dealing with dissent.

It’s true that in nearly every political cause, including the most justified, there are ugly elements — the Meir Kahanes or the Louis Farrakhans of the world. But the mark of a morally serious movement lies in its determination to weed out its worst members and stamp out its worst ideas. What we’ve too often seen from the “Free Palestine” crowd is precisely the opposite.

Joe Flaherty, ‘SCTV’ and ‘Freaks and Geeks’ actor, dies at 82

Joe Flaherty, the comedic actor best known for his performances in the influential sketch comedy series “SCTV” and as a father on the short-lived NBC ensemble series “Freaks and Geeks,” died Monday. He was 82.

His death was confirmed by his daughter, Gudrun Flaherty, who said that Flaherty died after a “brief illness.” She did not specify a cause or say where he died.

Flaherty played a variety of characters on “SCTV” as part of an ensemble that included John Candy, Martin Short, Rick Moranis, Andrea Martin, Eugene Levy and Catherine O’Hara. The concept of the series, which aired in the 1970s and ’80s, was that its sketches were “shows” for a low-rent TV station in a fictional town called Melonville.

Among Flaherty’s characters were Guy Caballero, the sleazy president of the station, and Sammy Maudlin, an unctuous late-night talk show host. His character Count Floyd wore a cheap vampire costume while hosting a horror movie show, “Monster Chiller Horror Theater.” The joke was that the movies the program showed — such as “Dr. Tongue’s Evil House of Pancakes” — were seldom very scary, leaving Floyd holding the bag and often having to apologize to viewers.

Gudrun Flaherty said in a statement that her father had an “unwavering passion for movies from the ’40s and ’50s,” which influenced his comedy, including his time on “SCTV.”.

Joe Flaherty was also known for roles on television shows and in films that were cherished by fans.

He played Harold Weir, the no-nonsense father of two awkward teenagers, in the cult television series “Freaks and Geeks,” which ran for only one season after premiering in 1999 but helped launch the careers of several young actors, including James Franco, Seth Rogen, Busy Philipps, Jason Segel and Linda Cardellini.

In the 1996 film “Happy Gilmore,” Flaherty had

a small but memorable role as a man who taunts the title character, a golfer played by Adam Sandler, from the crowd.

Joseph O’Flaherty was born on June 21, 1941, in Pittsburgh, the eldest of seven children, according to a 2004 profile in The Globe and Mail. His father was a production clerk at Westinghouse Electric, and the family struggled financially. “I still remember nuns from the church bringing us food,” he said.

After graduating from Central Catholic High School, he joined the Air Force at 17. He had taken a class at Pittsburgh Playhouse before enlisting, and after leaving the Air Force, he returned to the theater to take more classes, he told WESA Pittsburgh, the city’s NPR station, in 2016.

His focus was drama, but he got a taste for the life of a comedic actor while playing George in a scene from “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” in front of a small audience that laughed at his line readings.

“I was kind of thrown aback because I thought: ‘Hey what are they laughing at? This is a drama,” Flaherty told WESA. “But the lines were actually funny, and I enjoyed that. I enjoyed getting laughter from the audience.”

He continued to study dramatic acting, but felt the pull of comedy as he looked for work as an actor. That search took him to Chicago and the Second City, the improvisational comedy theater, which he said was where he fell in love with comedy.

“From that point on, it was all comedy,” he told WESA.

Flaherty — he told The Globe and Mail that he changed his surname to avoid confusion with a Joseph O’Flaherty who was already in the actors equity union — was with Second City in Chicago for seven years before moving to Toronto to help start a branch of the troupe there.

“SCTV,” short for Second City television, emerged as an offshoot of the Toronto troupe in 1976. The show aired first on Global in Toronto, then the CBC, and later on NBC and Cinemax in the United States. It won the Emmy award for outstanding writing in a variety or music program in 1982 and 1983.

After “SCTV” ended in 1984, Flaherty maintained ties to Canada, dividing his time between Toronto and Los Angeles. After “Freaks and Geeks” was canceled, he accepted an invitation to become an artist-in-residence at Humber College in Toronto.

He also worked steadily on television and in films.

In “Back to the Future Part II” (1989), he was the “Western Union man” who delivered a message to Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) after it had sat in the Western Union office for 70 years. He reprised the role years later in a 2010 episode of the animated series “Family Guy.”

In addition to his daughter, Flaherty is survived by a son, Gabe. Complete information on his survivors was not immediately available.

Reflecting on the legacy of “SCTV” two decades after its last episode aired, Flaherty told The Globe and Mail that the fact that the troupe’s members, several of whom went on to successful film and television careers, had worked together extensively onstage was key to the show’s success.

“If we had done it like an American network, they’d have done auditions for cast members,” he said. “They would have picked people out that did good auditions, and then put them together as a group to see if they could find a chemistry. Well, we really had a chemistry. The whole was greater than the sum of its parts.”

They can’t see the eclipse, but this device will help them hear it

On Aug. 21, 2017, Kiki Smith’s teenage sons giddily prepared to watch the partial solar eclipse in Rochester, New York. As Smith listened to their chatter, she felt excluded.

“I felt very alone,” she said. Smith was diagnosed with a degenerative condition as a child and lost the last of her vision in 2011. The local buzz around the eclipse, and the national media attention, unexpectedly touched a nerve.

The eclipse “was about experiencing a historic moment in community, and I wasn’t part of that,” she said.

Smith, 52, who works for a community development organization in Rochester, was determined to do things differently for the April 8 total eclipse that is passing through her city. She is helping to organize a public gathering that prioritizes accessibility for people with vision loss. Her event will include specially designed devices named LightSound that translate changing light intensity into musical tones, allowing blind and visually impaired people to listen as the sky grows dark and then brightens again.

During this eclipse, Smith said, “I will be with community. And I will have at my fingertips all of these fabulous resources to experience what I felt I missed last time.”

People across the United States with limited vision or blindness will experience the eclipse with the aid of about 900 LightSound devices distributed by a team led by Allyson Bieryla, a Harvard University astronomer.

The instrument was developed in 2017 by Bieryla, the manager of Harvard’s undergraduate astronomy lab and telescopes, and Wanda Díaz Merced, an astronomer who is blind and at the time was with the HarvardSmithsonian Center for Astrophysics.

After learning about the needs of visually impaired astronomers, Bieryla outfitted the lab she manages with a printer that creates three-dimensional, tactile representations on heat-sensitive paper of images captured by telescopes. Díaz Merced had for more than a decade been conducting research using sonification, in which mathematical data is translated into sounds.

The two decided to create a device to sonify that summer’s eclipse. Daniel Davis, the director of Harvard’s science demonstra-

Anthuan Montelagre, 13 and blind, listens to the ‘melody’ emitted by LightSound, which converts light into sound waves, during the solar eclipse in Palmira, Colombia, Oct. 14, 2023. Hundreds of LightSound devices are being distributed to help the blind and visually impaired experience the April 8 eclipse. (Jaír Coll/The New York Times)

tion lab, produced a prototype.

On Aug. 21, as the total eclipse passed over her viewing spot in Wyoming, Bieryla streamed the sound from the device via the internet.

Díaz Merced was then in Cape Town, South Africa, as a research fellow with the Office of Astronomy for Development. During the eclipse, she shared the stream with students at the Athlone School for the Blind.

“When they heard it, they jumped and they clapped,” she said. “It was the first time they were able to listen to such an event, so it was very meaningful.”

Roughly the size of a paperback novel, LightSound contains a light sensor that measures the sky’s brightness in lux, or units of illumination. Inside the case, code on a microcontroller board assigns particular sounds to numerical ranges of lux. A synthesizer board then generates a flute sound for intense light, a clarinet sound that lowers in pitch as the light fades, and a slow, percussive clicking during the darkness of totality. Listeners use headphones or a speaker to hear the device’s sonification.

Before the total solar eclipse that crossed Chile and Argentina on July 2, 2019, Bieryla’s team, funded by the International

Astronomical Union, sent devices or their components to colleagues in both countries. At an event at the Santiago planetarium in Chile, organizers connected a LightSound device to an amplification system so the more than 1,500 attendees — among them, people who were blind — could hear it.

“It’s not only dedicated for the visually impaired,” said Paulina Troncoso, director of the undergraduate astronomy program at

the Universidad Central Región de Coquimbo, who led the LightSound portion of that event. “It’s also for everyone.”

The team offers LightSound for free and has posted the computer code and instructions for building the devices online. Bieryla’s group continues to tinker with the product to improve users’ experience. For example, the 2017 prototype emitted a rather shrill tone. In 2018, Sóley Hyman, then a Harvard undergraduate, redesigned the device to incorporate the synthesizer board and developed the code for its flute, clarinet and clicking sounds.

One of Troncoso’s students experimented with reprogramming the board to use a simplified instrumental version of the 1997 Daft Punk song “Around the World.” In lowering light, the synthesized instruments switch off one by one, leaving only the sound of the drum machine.

Last year, Bieryla invited Elliot Richards, an engineer at Harvard, to redesign the device with a printed circuit board instead of a tangle of wires. The change makes building the devices much easier, and Bieryla and Hyman, who is now a graduate student at the University of Arizona, have taught volunteers to solder and assemble the materials at several workshops.

Once people understand how LightSound makes the eclipse accessible, they are eager to help, Bieryla said.

“That’s been heartwarming to me — just the amount of work that people have given to this project and the excitement around it,” she said.

Eclipses injured their eyes, and the world never looked the same

Ayoung woman visited New York Eye & Ear Infirmary of Mount Sinai Hospital shortly after the eclipse of Aug. 21, 2017. She told Dr. Avnish Deobhakta, an ophthalmologist, that she had a black area in her vision and then drew a crescent shape for him on a piece of paper.

When Deobhakta examined her eyes, he was astonished. He saw a burn on her retina that was exactly the same shape. It was “almost like a branding,” he said.

She had looked at the sun during the eclipse without any protection. The burn was an image of the sun’s outer edge.

With every eclipse, ophthalmologists see patients who looked at the sun and complain afterward that their vision is distorted: They see small black spots; their eyes are watery and sensitive to light. Usually, the symptoms resolve, although it may take several weeks to a year.

But the woman’s retinal burns, which Deobhakta and colleagues described in a medical case write-up, would not heal. Her retina was permanently scarred, an example of the severity of injuries that can follow looking at an eclipse without proper precautions.

With the eclipse coming next Monday, ophthalmologists advise people to not assume that short glances at the sun are safe. Damage can occur, they say, in less than a minute.

The moon almost entirely eclipses the sun in Exmouth, Australia, April 20, 2023. On April 8, 2024, North America will experience its second total solar eclipse in seven years, though skywatchers in Mexico will be the first to see the eclipse on the mainland. (Matthew Abbott/The New York Times)

David Calkins, director of the Vanderbilt Vision Research Center and vice chair of the Vanderbilt Eye Institute in Nashville, Tennessee, said younger people were most at risk of retinal injury, possibly because the lens of their eye is clearer than the lens in older people. He said they also may be a bit more reckless.

But age is no guarantee of safe eclipse viewing.

A study described 20 people ages 15 to 82 in England who complained of symptoms like black spots in their vision or blurry vision after an eclipse in 1999. Four said they used eclipse glasses; one said she used sunglasses. The rest looked with naked eyes.

Five had visible damage to their retinas. All but four of the 20 were better after seven months.

Not everyone is so lucky. A study published last year involved four young Irish women who looked at the sun during a religious gathering in October 2009. The women, who did

not know one another, sought medical attention within a few days of looking at the sun. They complained of blind spots in the center of their vision and said objects appeared distorted and blurred.

Investigators from Galway University Hospital followed up with the women for an average of more than five years. One was followed for 11 years.

Years later, the researchers reported, all of the women still had the blind spots.

For Deobhakta, the situation with the woman in 2017 is a cautionary tale.

While she did put on protective glasses for part of her viewing of the eclipse, she at first looked at it several times for about six seconds each time without protection.

She felt fine for four hours. Then her symptoms emerged: blurred vision, distorted shapes and colors, and that crescent-shaped black spot in the center of her vision with her left eye.

Most people look at an eclipse through special eclipse glasses. Often the glasses have a cardboard body with special film in the eyeholes that filters out harmful rays.

Deobhakta said he did not trust many of the eclipse glasses being sold and felt it was not worth taking a chance on them. He prefers an indirect method that involves using pinholes, like in a colander, to cast the sun’s shadow on the ground.

Professional groups say many eclipse glasses are safe but urge caution when buying them. The American Astronomical Society reported that potentially unsafe eclipse glasses flooded the market before the 2017 eclipse.

To help people find eclipse glasses, the astronomical society lists reliable sellers and distributors.

Legitimate eclipse glasses must meet specific international safety standards known as ISO 12312-2. Testing measures how much ultraviolet, visible and infrared light gets through.

But an ISO logo on the glasses is not necessarily an assurance, the astronomical society warns, because dealers can — and some do — snatch an ISO logo from the internet and put it on their glasses.

Rick Fienberg, project manager of the astronomical society’s Solar Eclipse Task Force, said counterfeiting companies were also putting the names of legitimate distributors on their products. That doesn’t necessarily mean they’re unsafe, he added. But it does mean that the seller, or the company that sold it the products, is committing fraud.

Fienberg suggests buying directly from a seller on the astronomical society’s list.

But, he said, if you are worried about your glasses, there is a way to see if they are effective. Look around a room with the eclipse glasses on. The glasses should be so dark you can’t see anything. Then, go outside and glance at the sun with the glasses on. You probably are safe, he said, if you can see the sun through the lenses and “the image is sharp and comfortably bright.”

Welcome to Raleigh, the new epicenter of college basketball

RALEIGH, N.C. — For decades, Sammy’s Tap & Grill, a sports bar for fans of North Carolina State University, had a glaring problem: The school’s basketball teams did not win all that much. David Harris, one of the owners, would concoct creative specials in hopes of drawing customers on game days, but it didn’t matter. Few ever came.

“All of that has changed now,” Harris, 59, said the other day, his smile, like those of his patrons, seemingly permanent. “Can you believe it?”

The N.C. State women’s and men’s basketball teams are both in the Final Four. It is a sentence few in Raleigh believed they ever would utter. And to listen to them say it aloud this week was to hear the exhausted, sometimes tearful glee of an overjoyed fan base still in shock.

Their neighbors, after all, are basketball royalty. Duke University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, each about 25 miles away, have won multiple national championships, and the North Carolina women’s team won it all in 1994. The two programs have one of the fiercest rivalries in college basketball.

Michael Jordan, arguably the greatest men’s player of all time, played for UNC. Duke can lay claim to Mike Krzyzewski, who won more games than any men’s coach in NCAA history.

Then there is N.C. State.

Students at Duke, which is in Durham, and UNC have long labeled N.C. State their “little brother” — an uncompetitive, weaker sibling in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Sometimes, the trash talk feels like it

extends beyond sports. Duke is a premier private university, and UNC is the state’s public flagship, its oldest educational jewel and itself a top school. N.C. State is known for its robust agricultural and engineering curricula, but it does not have the national allure of the other two.

Yet in the men’s tournament, No. 1-seeded UNC lost to Alabama in the Sweet 16. And Duke, a No. 4 seed, fell last weekend to none other than N.C. State.

“Now they can’t talk,” Tyler Sherman, a freshman at N.C. State, said of both teams as he decided between a gray and a red Final Four T-shirt at the university’s store on Tuesday.

Still, it has been an arduous journey for the Wolfpack. In the 1950s, the N.C. State men’s team was considered the best in the ACC, and for the next three decades, the rivalry between N.C. State and UNC was the biggest in North Carolina, said Tim Peeler, who wrote a book on the team that won N.C. State’s last national title, in 1983.

A big setback occurred in 1989, when the NCAA placed the school’s basketball team on probation for two years and barred it from the 1990 tournament for violations that included the misuse of complimentary tickets and sneakers provided to the players.

Around that time, ESPN was taking off, and the UNC-Duke rivalry was growing in intensity in the state partly because of their high-profile coaches, Peeler said.

The women’s team at N.C. State has been strong in recent years, but it had not made it this far since 1998. As for the men’s team, fans will acknowledge they have had more than a few subpar seasons. They were, at best, mediocre during this year’s regular season, finishing 17-14. On campus, there were whispers that the head coach, Kevin Keatts, would be fired.

To even qualify for the NCAA Tournament, the men’s team had to win the ACC Tournament, a feat that involved five straight wins for a team that had lost its last four regular-season games. It has kept winning ever since, beating Duke on Sunday and leaving fans thunderstruck.

“Crazy,” said Norman Downer, an N.C. State alumnus who graduated in 2014.

Dereck Whittenburg, a guard for the team that won the 1983 title, said in an interview that he had seen it all in college basketball. But this current run, he said, felt “truly incredible.”

(One sports statistician put the men’s team’s chances of winning nine straight elimination games to make the Final Four at 10,314-1.)

“It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” Whittenburg, 63, said.

Gov. Roy Cooper of North Carolina, who graduated from UNC and vividly remembers Whittenburg’s plays from decades ago, said in an interview that he was pulling for both Wolfpack teams. The women’s team, a No. 3 seed, will face South Carolina on Friday; the men will face Purdue on Saturday.

“It’s really hard to find anyone in North Carolina right now, regardless of who your team is, who is not for North Carolina State,” Cooper said.

A No. 11 seed in the men’s tournament, N.C. State is now the country’s Cinderella team, led by DJ Burns Jr., a 6-foot-9 center who has won Raleigh’s heart with his balletic moves and cheerful demeanor.

On Tuesday evening in Raleigh, roughly

1,000 people lined up outside an Applebee’s for a meet-and-greet with Burns and guard DJ Horne, N.C. State’s leading scorer.

Outside the restaurant, boys and girls scrawled “Wolfpack!” in red chalk on the sidewalk and stared into the restaurant’s windows, trying to catch a glimpse. People carried basketballs to be signed. Lily Mulhall, a freshman at N.C. State, said she brought a hubcap to get autographed because — well, it was a long story, but she considered it lucky.

Only a small number of fans managed to get inside and meet the players. Few appeared to care.

What mattered was that they were here, smiling at the ridiculousness of the crowd size as the sun set.

Word spread that the players would be exiting soon through the restaurant’s back door. Some fans had already gathered around it. One had climbed a tree for a better look. They raised their phones, preparing to snap and record so that they could one day remember.

A boy asked his father if they could stay a little longer and get a peek of the players. The father said it was fine.

Raleigh had already waited 40 years for scenes like this. What was 10 more minutes?
