Szczerbacki Discusses Future of the College, Selection as Forthcoming President

Interview Possibility of an expansion to the library, a new humanities building, and new academic programs in social work mentioned

By IAN BENJAMIN Executive Editor Atop the provost’s desk sat a package, vaguely bottle shaped, still wrapped in shiny red paper and cinched with a ribbon. Paper printouts of the

letters C-O-N-G-R-A-T-U-LA-T-I-O-N-S were taped upon a wall. Walking into his office—the office of the provost and vice president of academic affairs—David Szczerbacki feigned surprise at the celebratory decoration, saying that he would find those who had so “vandalized” his office space. Just hours before Szczerbacki was selected as the ninth president of the College by the board of trustees after the unanimous recommendation of the presidential search committee. The relief at the release of tension after a lengthy search process was palpable in the room. He will assume the duties of the chief executive on July 1.

The College of Saint Rose is opening its new guesthouse, located at 8 South Main Ave. as of Monday, Feb. 13. John Bryant, assistant vice president of facili-

ties, said that the purpose of the guesthouse is to provide “short term lodging for certain visitors to the campus including speakers, visiting dignitaries, trustees, faculty or other employment candidates, etc.” The property at 8 South

Main has a full market value of $159,314, according to a 2011 city of Albany assessment listing. Prior to acquistion by the College it was listed under the names of Thomas Hunt and Steven Ostroff. An open house and tours of the new guesthouse will be of-

fered from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 13, and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 16 for college administration, faculty, staff, and any students that are interested to stop by. No appointment is necessary. Continued on page A4

Slowly taking a seat at a large office table in the late afternoon light Friday, Szczerbacki took some time out of the momentous day to give an interview. Speaking with his deep, even voice Szczerbacki discussed his personal background, the ideal trajectory of the College, and his love of gardening. “I would like to keep doing a lot of the things that we’ve been doing. The direction’s good, the leadership team is strong,” said Szczerbacki, but “we have unfinished business.” The provost outlined some aspects of the College’s long term aspirations, including expansion of the facilities, and an aim to increase enrollment. “[We’re] probably going Continued on page A2
