Spring 2019

Message from the HAA President The Heuvelton Alumni Association hopes you will consider attending the 2019 HAA Awards Ceremony and Reunion that is scheduled for Saturday August 31st. We are pleased to announce that it will be held on Labor Day Weekend to coincide with the Labor Day Committee’s activities. This year the HAA Committee took into consideration activities that have been planned for the community during Labor Day and decided to eliminate hosting an evening dinner. Instead we will be offering an extended social time with refreshments after the Awards Ceremony. We are hoping that community members and former graduates of Heuvelton Central School will visit the HCS cafeteria between 2-4 pm following the Awards Ceremony that starts at 1 pm. During the afternoon social time there will be light refreshments and tables set up with memorabilia from the following decades: 50’s, 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, 90’s, 200009, and 2010-2019. (If you have memorabilia that you would like to donate for the day, you can contact Jamie Fenton Bush ’99 at There will also be time for people to tour the school. If you haven’t visited the school in while, there have been significant changes from capital improvement projects that have made the Heuvelton District building and grounds stand out as an extremely attractive school with up-to-date technology. There will be no charge for the refreshments offered during the social time, but donations towards their cost would be appreciated. We will also be offering a 50-50 raffle and silent auction items as a means to cover expenses.

The HAA Committee was saddened by the death of Mary Lou Simms Rupp (Class of ’76), one of this year’s recipients of the Distinguished Alumni Awards. Mary Lou was notified in March of this year that she would be receiving this award and she expressed her appreciation for being recognized. Just seven weeks after that correspondence Mary Lou lost her heroic battle against cancer. Mary Lou touched many people during her lifetime. We encourage anyone who had a relationship with Mary Lou to attend the Awards Ceremony and celebrate with her family her well-deserved recognition as a Heuvelton Distinguished Alumni. Wade Davis, Class of 1990 will also be honored as a Distinguished Alumni on August 31st and the members of the 1978 & 1979 Basketball Teams will be entered into the Athletic Hall of Fame. Details and biographies of the HAA Award recipients can be found within this newsletter. I want to thank the members of the Heuvelton Alumni Committee for their dedication and support throughout the year in planning the HAA Awards Ceremony and their involvement in the activities that keep the HAA going. They are a great group of people, and I encourage you to consider joining our team. Our meetings are held in the HCS Multi-media Room from 6:30-7:30 pm approximately six times per year. We would love to see our membership grow, so please reach out if you would like to be a part of the HAA Committee.

Wade became a Certified Member of the American Association of Airport Executives and is currently pursuing his AAE designation. Since 2006 Wade has served as the Executive Director of Ogdensburg Bridge and Port Authority which operates the recently expanded Ogdensburg International Airport (OGS), the Port of Ogdensburg, the first U.S. Port on the Great Lakes/St. Lawrence Seaway system, the Ogdensburg-Prescott International Bridge including the Ogdensburg Border Station, light industrial/heavy industrial parks, FTZ #118, and oversees contract operation of the New York and Ogdensburg Railroad; a twenty-eight mile rail line. Wade is responsible for the direct supervision of five executive level officers and for the implementation of the Authority’s Adopted Strategic Plan. Founded in 1950, the Ogdensburg Bridge and Port Authority (OBPA) is a New York State public benefit corporation with a seven-member Board of Directors appointed by the Governor of New York State engaged in transportation services and real estate development for the commercial/industrial client. OBPA is engaged in regional economic development and physical asset management for the benefit of the greater Ogdensburg area. Wade is active in New York State infrastructure and energy-related issues and holds utility-level certifications from the Association of Energy Engineers as an Energy Manager (CEM), Demand Side Management (CDSM), Energy Procurement (CEP), and Business Energy Professional (BEP), possessing a broad background in energy and transportation related-issues currently facing medium to large facilities. Community-minded, Wade is past president of the Potsdam Central School Board of Education, has served as past President of the Potsdam Lions Club, former Vice Chair and the Town of Potsdam’s representative to the Alliance for Municipal Power (AMP), is a thirteen year member of the St. Lawrence County Planning Board, and is the former Chair of the Village of Potsdam’s Zoning Board of Appeals. Wade resides in the Village of Potsdam, New York with his wife Julie and their three children ages fifteen, fourteen, and eleven. Mary Lou Simms Rupp, Class of ’76 is being honored posthumously with a 2019 Distinguished Alumni Award for her many accomplishments and positive effects on others during her lifetime. Mary Lou grew up in a large family of three brothers and three sisters on a small farm owned by her mother and father Dorothy and William Simms near Heuvelton, NY. After graduating from Heuvelton in 1976, she continued her education at Potsdam State University where she earned a bachelor’s degree. After graduating from college Mary Lou went into business as part owner of a Jreck Sub shop in Ogdensburg, NY. She married William J. Rupp on May 21, 1983. The couple later moved near Auburn, NY to open their first franchised sub shop. They went on to own and operate five franchise stores in the Central New York area for the next ten years. After their daughters Abbie and Kelsie were born, Mary Lou and her husband desired to move back to the Heuvelton area so in 1993 she and her husband created “Simply Sandwiches” in Ogdensburg, NY, which the couple operated for 13 years until they decided to close the business. Mary Lou joined the St. Lawrence County Clerk’s office in 2003 working at the NYS Department of Motor Vehicles. In 2008 she was asked by then County Clerk Patty Ritchie to join her team as Deputy County Clerk. Later in 2011 when Ms. Ritchie became a State Senator, Mary Lou decide to run for the County Clerk position and won by a wide margin. Mary Lou won a second term to that position in 2016. During her time in government service, Mary Lou helped to modernize the County Clerk’s Office. She introduced electronic recording, which gives banks, attorneys, title companies and others a paperless option to securely record documents. She developed a countywide Veterans’ ID program, which provides valuable discounts from participating local businesses to men and women who have served our country. She assisted Senator Patty Ritchie to honor and remember those still serving by helping with the Senator’s “Christmas Cards for Our Troops” program. Mary Lou was very active in her church and was also a strong advocate for “Donate for Life” in St Lawrence County, which encourages life-saving organ donation. She received the Betsy Kaplan award from the St. Lawrence County Republican Committee and was a past recipient of the “Women of the Year” award presented by Senator Patty Richie. Ms. Rupp supported community events such as the Ogdensburg Boys & Girls Club Expo, Senior Health and Wellness Fairs and “Lights on the River.” Most importantly in 2017 when diagnosed with cancer for the third time, Mary Lou decided to publicly share her personal story in an effort to help others understand the importance of warning signs and cancer screening. Mary Lou was notified by the Heuvelton Alumni Committee in March of this year that she would be receiving one of the 2019 HAA Distinguished Alumni Awards. She was gracious and humble in her correspondence regarding this award. Sadly, her death this past May cut our time short with this remarkable woman. Family, friends and all touched by Mary Lou Rupp are encouraged to join her family in celebrating her life during the 2019 HAA Awards Ceremony. -3-
