Spring 2019

Message from the HAA President The Heuvelton Alumni Association hopes you will consider attending the 2019 HAA Awards Ceremony and Reunion that is scheduled for Saturday August 31st. We are pleased to announce that it will be held on Labor Day Weekend to coincide with the Labor Day Committee’s activities. This year the HAA Committee took into consideration activities that have been planned for the community during Labor Day and decided to eliminate hosting an evening dinner. Instead we will be offering an extended social time with refreshments after the Awards Ceremony. We are hoping that community members and former graduates of Heuvelton Central School will visit the HCS cafeteria between 2-4 pm following the Awards Ceremony that starts at 1 pm. During the afternoon social time there will be light refreshments and tables set up with memorabilia from the following decades: 50’s, 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, 90’s, 200009, and 2010-2019. (If you have memorabilia that you would like to donate for the day, you can contact Jamie Fenton Bush ’99 at jbush@heuvelton.k12.ny.us). There will also be time for people to tour the school. If you haven’t visited the school in while, there have been significant changes from capital improvement projects that have made the Heuvelton District building and grounds stand out as an extremely attractive school with up-to-date technology. There will be no charge for the refreshments offered during the social time, but donations towards their cost would be appreciated. We will also be offering a 50-50 raffle and silent auction items as a means to cover expenses.

The HAA Committee was saddened by the death of Mary Lou Simms Rupp (Class of ’76), one of this year’s recipients of the Distinguished Alumni Awards. Mary Lou was notified in March of this year that she would be receiving this award and she expressed her appreciation for being recognized. Just seven weeks after that correspondence Mary Lou lost her heroic battle against cancer. Mary Lou touched many people during her lifetime. We encourage anyone who had a relationship with Mary Lou to attend the Awards Ceremony and celebrate with her family her well-deserved recognition as a Heuvelton Distinguished Alumni. Wade Davis, Class of 1990 will also be honored as a Distinguished Alumni on August 31st and the members of the 1978 & 1979 Basketball Teams will be entered into the Athletic Hall of Fame. Details and biographies of the HAA Award recipients can be found within this newsletter. I want to thank the members of the Heuvelton Alumni Committee for their dedication and support throughout the year in planning the HAA Awards Ceremony and their involvement in the activities that keep the HAA going. They are a great group of people, and I encourage you to consider joining our team. Our meetings are held in the HCS Multi-media Room from 6:30-7:30 pm approximately six times per year. We would love to see our membership grow, so please reach out if you would like to be a part of the HAA Committee.

We appreciate any support you can offer to keep the HAA functioning as a means to honor former Heuvelton students as well as support current students in the district. Your annual dues, donations and participation in our raffles make this newsletter, student scholarships and BEST Idea Awards for innovative teaching programs possible. We also are grateful to Business Sponsors who support our organization. The names of businesses who have donated this year to the Heuvelton Alumni Association are recognized within this newsletter. Please support these businesses when you can! Enjoy the newsletter and hope to see you on August 31st! Sincerely, Susan Brown Todd, Class of 1972, President of HAA
