Go Karting Club

Both Senior and Primary school Go Karts are running and now ready for testing.

It’s been a process of assembly and disassembly over many months. The pupils are the pit crew so they need to know how it all works!

We are currently designing a streamlined body to improve both efficiency and aerodynamics.

Eventually, when both Go Karts are fully complete, we will race them against other schools.

Italian Club At the end of the term, the Italian Group invited their parents (and younger brothers) into school to see a series of Italian sketches.

Refreshments were available but parents had to ask for them in Italian which caused some hilarity! A good term’s work

‘ FA M E ’ Our annual senior school production this year is ‘FAME’ which will be performed in the Theatre on Wednesday 26, Thursday 27, and Friday, 28 April, 2017. The shows will be at 7pm and tickets are priced at £4 each. Don’t forget to purchase your tickets on the School Gateway App.

Bi e nn i a l C C F i n s p ec tio n Thursday, 30 March, saw our Biennial CCF inspection taken by Colonel Paul Walkley of the Royal Irish Regiment.

It went very well indeed and Colonel Walkley spoke warmly of the achievements, conduct and professionalism of Royal cadets in both army and RAF contingents. He saw the CCF in great health with more than a hundred cadets (Y9-12) in over 12 work stations evidencing their skills and aptitudes. It was very, very impressive.

Mayo r ’s P a r l ou r - v a rie ty sh o w On a Tuesday evening towards the end of term, 60 students from Years 4 to 13 went to the Mayor’s Parlour in the Civic centre in Wolverhampton to put on a variety show to raise money for the Mayor’s chosen charities. It was a mixture of high quality music, dance and drama which was enjoyed by all of the parents and guests who attended. The evening raised over £850 and the Mayor was delighted with the sum raised and amazed by the amount of talent on show.

Integration Bee The last week of term saw The Royal School host the 134th annual Integration Bee, mathematics challenge, a very prestigious international event. This year’s Royal team was comprised of competitors from Lithuania, China and Great Britain; Macau and Hong Kong having withdrawn their competitors at the last minute due to a mix up with dates.

The strongest member of the field came from Great Britain – Y12 Stanley Leibniz Fullman. His talents were so well known around the world, there was even a plot to sabotage the event. The Y13 Further Maths team had an evil plan to ‘knock down’ the best member of the opposite team – Stanley Fullman. Stanley ‘feared for his live’ for the whole week leading up to the event. His fellow team members Ugne Deltuvaite and Victoria Kuckina decided to protect Stanley and they became Stanley’s ‘bodyguards’ for the week. He was under 24/7 surveillance, as the attached pictures evidence.

This year’s host was the infamous Polish Anna Maciag, a stickler for the rules, where only very precise answers would count. As the event kicked off, the record crowd (official attendance was two) witnessed a tight start, both teams managing to get an early point on the board.

By halfway Fullman’s team was so far ahead Mr Singh’s team had to bring in reinforcements from Malaysia. Alas this was only damage limitation and Fullman’s team were victorious!

Unfortunately Y13 Further Maths lost again, this time 21 to 10. They really cried over their loss and as usual demanded a rematch. Y12 Further Maths have kindly agreed ‘to give Y13 Further Maths the opportunity to lose again’.

It was a magnificent event and Mr Large who was in the crowd that evening said that it was “unbelievable integration at times.”

As the Integration Bee continued, Fullman’s team – Y12 Further Maths pulled ahead with Fullman managing to integrate some functions in a matter of seconds.

Games Evening Miss Zhang and York House hosted a games evening and all boarding houses were invited to join in the fun of competing against each other. Games played included musical chairs, balloon games and Guess The Word games. Third place went to York, Dartmouth second, and first place went to Lichfield. Overall an extremely enjoyable night.

The Boarders held their annual Valentine dance in February. Lichfield House won The Dance Off, sorry boys you were just not good enough... The photo corner proved very popular with everyone wanting their pictures taken. Most Loved up couple went to Katharina and Gregor and they duly were so crowned. Many thanks to Charlie and Luke for arranging the music and lighting.

The evening was finished off by our own Mr Catarinich doing his impression of, ‘I’m a Single Lady’, and he was word and step perfect, which earned him the biggest round of the applause of the evening. Special thanks also to Miss Beards, Miss Taylor and Miss Perry for their help in organising and decorating The Theatre.

FORSA Parent Quiz Night Creche

Lichfield Ladies recently held a creche for youngsters who attend the school, while their parents went to a Quiz Night held by FORSA. As you can see from the pictures, the children had a wonderful time and were extremely well behaved. We first had games in Lee’s house, then spent time watching a Disney film, while filling the little ones up with pop corn, ice lollies and squash.

The Well food bank for Lent Year 5 teacher Sandra Brown saw an article in the local Wolverhampton newspaper requesting donations to ‘The Well’ food bank for Lent. Primary students and their families kindly donated a large amount of food!

‘I’m so proud of them and the wonderful sacrificial act which they have shown!’ said Mrs Brown’ who took the food to the food bank herself.

U10/11 Football vs Wolverhampton Grammar School This term’s opening football match against Wolverhampton Grammar was a terrific success. Despite the wet weather forcing a last minute venue change, the boy’s gusto was undamped. Our Year 5 and 6 lads excelled themselves on the pitch with a pair of tremendous victories.

The A team match was a tightly contested battle. With two sets of very skilled forwards, it was to be the defenders that decided the outcome of the game, with both teams aiming some excellent strikes on goal.

First to score for The Royal was Kevin, this was after some great team passing work in the opposition half, which opened up a good gap on goal. Despite a number of opportunities we were unable to add to our total in first half. Only some stupendous work in goal by Luke kept us ahead.

The second half brought an abundance of goals with Captain James leading the onslaught, closely followed by Kamran. The opposition had plenty of attempts to test our keeper, two of which they managed to nudge past our Luke. At one point it looked as though WGS would win the day, but as the afternoon neared its end, a second goal from Kevin secured our triumph.

Well played to all the boys. It was a splendid afternoon of football and a fabulous result.

City Dance Festival On Wednesday 1 March, The Royal hosted a primary dance festival (am) and attended a Year 4 rugby and netball festival at Birchfield (pm). Both were festivals without competitive placings. Dancers from Year 1, Year 3 and a mixed Year 5-6 dance group performed fantastically with energy and confidence. The netball and rugby teams played well and showed improvements throughout.

Dodgeball Year 5 and 6 girls played dodgeball against Stowlawn on Tuesday, 7 March, and won 3-1. Well done to the team for playing with enthusiasm! Coach’s players are Rosie Tokley and Mahum Shahzad for great attacking.

Wolverhampton Primary Schools City Swimming Gala A huge well done to the U11 boys and girls swimming teams who both won silver medals at the City competition held at The Royal pool. They now go on to represent Wolverhampton in the Black Country Games in April! Good luck everyone.

Amazing Netball Success!

On Monday, 6 March, the Year 5-6 girls A and B netball teams played in the WASPS High 5 Girls Netball Tournament. The A team won and are city champions! The B team came fourth! Fantastic performances all round from the girls, well done!

Cross Country On Wednesday, 15 February, Years 4-5 children took part in the Birchfield Invitational Cross Country Run. We won the following: Team awards: U11 Boys – 1st place Individual awards: Henry Williams – U11 1st place with a new course record of 6 minutes, 51 seconds.

William Langley – U11 2nd place Benedict Benson – U10 1st place Oliver Creswell – U9 1st place with a new course record of 4 minutes 56 seconds.

All runners gave their best efforts in the rain, well done to all!

On Thursday, 23 March, the U11 cross country team competed in the finals of the city cross country competition at Aldersley. The boys came second with just two points separating them from first place. The girls came twelfth. Great runs from all the children, everyone gave it their all!

Special mention to runners who made it into the top 20 out of over 100 competitors.

Our Year 4-6 cross country teams triumphed again at the Penn area cross country heats. Henry Williams won individual gold, whilst Emma Seeney gained an individual bronze medal. In the boys team event, our boys gained gold and our girl’s team gained silver. Well done to everyone, a wonderful team result!

City Netball Leagues The Senior School Netball Teams have had an absolutely fantastic season. The Y11 and Y8 teams were crowned City Champions and the Y10 team finished in silver medal position. Our best EVER netball season at The Royal! Between all of our A and B teams we have played 31 matches this season (excluding tournaments) winning an impressive 26 games, drawing three and loosing just two!

British Schools’ Modern Biathlon Championships Year 8 student Dylan Jones represented The Royal School in the British Schools Modern Biathlon Championships at Crystal Palace recently.

Seventy four boys qualified and competed in the under 13 age group. Competitors swam 100m freestyle and ran a 1600m race. We are pleased to report Dylan came fourteenth in Britain.

Year 6 student Henry Williams also competed at National Biathlon Championship at Crystal Palace on Sunday, 26 March representing the School and came in sixth in his age group.

PGL netball tour to Boreatton Park

Our fourth annual netball tour gave our teams the opportunity to compete against high quality opposition from across the country. The Y7, 8 and 11 teams had two days of netball ahead of them as they arrived at Boreatton Park in Shropshire on Friday, March 10. The weather was kind to us (most of the weekend) allowing us to play our games in good conditions and taking part in adventure activities without getting too muddy and soggy. As always the ladies were a credit to themselves and the school both on and off the court. Between the three teams we played 21 games across the two days! The results were a well-earned bronze for the Year 8 and Year 7 teams. Our Year 10 and 11 team were undefeated all weekend and performed remarkably. They went on to win the tournament in impressive style.

City Gymnastics Champion 2017 Congratulations to Eshe Bernard for being crowned City Gymnastics Champion 2017 after performing a breath taking floor routine and vault at this weeks competition.

Dance & Cheerleading Lauren Millar competed in the ‘British Open’ for Dance & Cheerleading. We are really pleased to say she achieved three first places with her teams and one second place, furthermore her Junior Jazz team achieved an overall Grand Champion award as did her Senior Cheerleading team.

RWS Elite Swimmers Over the last few weeks RWS swimmers have been competing at various County Championships representing their home clubs with great distinction. We thank the local coaches and support staff for all their support they offered to our swimmers With the new format of heats and finals, this gives the swimmers the perfect opportunity to set themselves up for the Championships later in the season.

Swimming faster in the finals is a skill that needs perfecting.

It also gives our swimmers a chance to show their peers why they make the commitment to the RWS program which has again proved it produces consistent outstanding results.

Even with the Elite squad missing two thirds of the Staffordshire Championships because of the Cyprus training camp, the results over Worcestershire and Staffordshire are excellent. The facts don’t lie;Finalists 175 Gold medals – 56 Silver medals – 40 Bronze medals – 30

What a double! They then went on to represent Wolverhampton in the Black Country Games where they finished in fourth and in bronze medal positions respectively. Another fantastic season. Swimming – City Championship Results The Royal has been host to five City Swimming Galas’ this term. The U11 teams finished in silver position and have made it through to the Black Country Games in late April and will do a fantastic job representing Wolverhampton I am sure. We will update you on the results in the next newsletter.

The U13 Boys A Team, Over 13 Girls Club Section A Team and Over 13 Boys A Team have all been crowned City Champions after

dominating their swimming events. The success does not end there! The Over 13 Girls Club Section B team, Over 13 Girls Gala Section A Team and Over 13 Boys B teams all finished with silver medals.

Swimming continues to go from strength to strength.

Well done to all our swimmers and officials for making the events truly amazing in every respect.

City Dodgeball Competitions The Royal sent sixteen dodgeball teams to compete in the U13 and U15 City dodgeball competitions at Highfields School this term. It was an ideal opportunity for players who have not yet represented the school competitively to compete against youngsters from across the city. Everyone had a good time and worked well as a team against some very strong opponents. A huge well done to everyone that participated.

The U19 girls and boys teams both finished in bronze medal positions in the City Championships. The U16 boys qualified for the City Finals whilst the U16 girls were crowned City and Black Country Champions!! In the U13 age group the boys made it to the City finals whilst the girls finished in silver medal position in the City Championships. Very impressive. Well done to all our players.
