HOURS OF OPERATION

ROUNDHOUSE vISION & MISSION

in September of 1996 the Roundhouse advisory committee, composed of neighbourhood representatives, heritage supporters, members of the arts community and park Board staff, undertook a retreat to work through a vision for the Roundhouse. the following is the result of those discussions: The overall mission is to celebrate diversity... of people, values, ideas and activities. this mission is made up of three key elements:

THE ROUNDHOUSE AS PROJECT

all of us who work or play or socialize at the Roundhouse will be active participants in an evolving project to find new and creative ways to integrate the arts, community, culture and sports.

THE ROUNDHOUSE AS OASIS

the Roundhouse is located in the centre of one of the largest urban experiments in history, transforming a few hundred acres of mostly vacant lots into one of north america’s densest and most diverse urban sites. the Roundhouse will be an oasis in the centre of this dynamic mix, enabling people to use their creativity and energy (at whatever level) to rejuvenate themselves and to be better equipped to face a blizzard of challenges and opportunities around them.

THE ROUNDHOUSE AS CONNECTION

the Roundhouse exists to identify and serve the needs of widely divergent communities. to do this the Roundhouse must reach out to the places and situations where those communities feel comfortable. these relationships will grow into Roundhouse programs through sponsorships, partnerships, and our own productions.

messages President's message & Privacy I am delighted to introduce another season of exciting and innovative programs to keep us healthy

and fit, and to enhance our enjoyment of the cultural diversity of Vancouver. We offer programs for all age groups, from toddlers to seniors, to fit their health, fitness and cultural needs. We celebrate many festivals, as we are part of a city-wide initiative to promote arts and culture. This guide is a treasure trove of opportunities for you to participate in Roundhouse activities. Our program leaders work with an array of experienced and talented partners from Vancouver and abroad. We try to bring that experience and knowledge together in the development of new programs. For example, Diana Guenther, our youth programmer, has been discussing with her counterparts in Vienna, Austria, how they formulate their services, and our seniors’ programmer, Diana VanderVeen, has been exploring new and ancient approaches for seniors’ health and fitness. These include Hatha Yoga, Sookshma Yoga and Kundalini Yoga. Our recreation programmers, Catherine Crough and Kathryn Sweetapple, are adding intergenerational activities for the whole family, and as usual, our arts programmers, Brenda Racanelli and Marie Lopes, are busy planning a number of festivals and city-wide events. With this issue, we say thanks to Margaret Watts who has moved on to take charge of the activities at Dunbar and Point Grey Community Centres, after serving at the Roundhouse for 10 years. We also welcome Daisy Chin, our current Community Recreation Supervisor, to the Roundhouse and look forward to working with her to sustain and enhance our program offerings. I want to thank our volunteers who set an example of constructive contribution to their communities. Do tell your friends to volunteer at the Roundhouse. Volunteering can be fun. Contributing your talent and energy to your community is the tenet of Canadian society and the opportunity is yours for the asking. If you or your friends are interested, please contact our Volunteer Coordinator, Michele Mateus. Roundhouse is yours to enjoy, please ask your friends also to participate.

Profile: moniqUe dion monique came to volunteer at the Roundhouse on a school co-op placement as part of her grade 11 schooling. She had just moved to the yaletown area, so she chose the Roundhouse to learn more about her new community. When monique first started with us, she did not know a lot about the arts. However, by the end of her three week placement, she had a whole new outlook. She realized that there are many people who are passionate about the arts and how the arts can bring people and communities together. monique was so inspired by her experience that she continues to volunteer even though her placement is over. if someone were to ask ask her about volunteering, her advice would be, “Do it! We spend so much time on ourselves, and a few hours out of a day helping others doesn’t take much out of your own day, but makes a big difference to others.” monique has now joined the Roundhouse as one of our regular volunteers and we are delighted to have her on our team!

A Roundhouse Residency with Co.ERASGA The Roundhouse, in partnership with Co. ERASGA Dance and Montreal Arts Interculturels (MAI) is the recipient of a $20,000 Canada Council Grant “Dance Presentation Program: Support to Presenters.” This the first time the Roundhouse has received such a grant and it speaks to the dedication and support a community arts facility can offer community and professional dance in Vancouver. Since its inception, the Roundhouse has provided countless opportunities for dancers to develop, collaborate with a range of artists, and cultivate the desire to dance in each one of us. Alvin Erasga Tolentino has been connected to the Roundhouse for over ten years, initially as part of a residency with Karen Jameison Dance Company, and throughout the years with the Purple Rose Campaign, Dance Allsorts series and the Vancouver International Dance Festival. It is so amazing to see how he has progressed in creating his own company and performing for the international stage. The Roundhouse is very excited for the Colonial residency—performance, FREE dance workshops, FREE lectures series for the public—come take part.
