The Roses’ Chronicle SPRING 2023

Dear Friends,

This is the second iteration of our chronicle, written exclusively for our members, where we hope to inspire and delight you. In this issue we reveal ways our Roses family get creative, including some incredible ways our staff use their free time from professional singing to Board Game design.

As I read the draft of this chronicle, I had an incredible feeling of pride and privilege to be working at the centre of creative community in Gloucestershire.

However, I also felt a pang of jealousy: despite working in this inspiring space surrounded by talent my own creativity has been a little on the back burner. Work and home life have taken over recently and I forget to prioritise my own creativity despite knowing the massive mental and physical health benefits it provides me.

I’ve been thinking a lot about how I want to be more creative. The problem is that’s where I stop – I just do the thinking! While ideation is a crucial part of the artistic process, it’s really the doing that’s the important part – writing that book, getting the knitting needles out, putting paint to paper or dancing the dance.

I find that starting the doing is the hardest bit – so many creative gremlins get in the way! My dominant gremlin is ‘it’s not going to be good so why bother?’ To quote Annie Lamot, who writes brilliantly about the writing process, ‘Perfectionism is the voice of the oppressor, the enemy of the people. It will keep you cramped and insane your whole life.’ For those of you like me, struggling to bring creativity into your lives, here’s some top tips and some blatant cheats to help you bridge the gap between thinking of the thing and doing the thing!

• To steal from the some of my business productivity books The One Thing and Essentialism, start with the minimum viable action – write for 2 minutes a day then stop, draw a simple line drawing, write one line of a song. Takes the pressure off and fits in with life! I love using an journaling app.

• Try and be bad at it instead of good at it. This is a game changer as it makes it about the process not the result, and definitely makes it more fun.

• Copy someone who’s already done it – don’t be afraid to write / paint / sing in the style of your favourite author / artist / singer. Let them be the fuel and spark of your creative fire.

• Use prompts that other people have created. Over lockdown I participated in the wonderful Isolation Journals created by Suleika Joauad, that provided a daily writing prompt for a huge community of amateur writers.

If you’ve got a bit more time and really want to connect with your inner creator, I highly recommend doing the 12 week self-directed creative discovery mapped out in Julia Cameron’s brilliant book The Artists Way.

I hope this Chronicle stokes the fire of your inner creator and gets those creative juices flowing. I can promise you it’s always worth it.

The Big Local Night Out at The Roses

Friday 5th May marks the first in a series of four of The Big Local Night Out, each featuring different headline acts, community groups and compered by local entertainer Tom Elliott. This sounds like something you might find at The Roses on any given night... but there is one huge difference between this show and the others you might see on our stage. That difference is this: Tom has secured funding to produce and run this series of events, enabling The Roses to keep 100% of the ticket income. Tom has succesfully trialled The Big Local Night Out in other venues and when he approached us to see if we were interested in being a part of it, our answer was unanimous.

If you are able to support this event, tickets are available online or via Box Office on 01684 290574.

Building Resilience Project with Tirlebrook Primary School

Alongside our community programme which runs all year round we also work closely with other community groups in the borough and seek to work together with organisations promoting arts and wellbeing across Gloucestershire. Throughout the Spring term we formed a new partnership with Cinderford Artspace and Tewkesbury Nature Reserve and delivered a project to support year 5’s at Tirlebrook Primary School to become more resilient, a challenge the school had identified following Covid and wanted to support them with ahead of SATs and the transition to secondary school.

Over the course of 10 weeks the children were given the opportunity to create a character of their choosing. These characters could be anything they wanted and through them the children were asked to think about how the characters would feel in different settings... perhaps they enjoyed a bustling theatre or maybe they would prefer a quiet corner of a nature reserve. Throughout the project the children took part in a range of activities from arts and crafts to drama to bring their characters to life. During the final session it was clear that confidence had grown as we enjoyed performances from many of the children and showcased their journey to that point with a gallery of work and photos from along the way on our stage for the parents and teachers to enjoy.

New Challenges

Next up in our series of ‘news’ this Spring is challenges and we’ve some local stories to tell and a challenge or two you might want to join in with.

Our Community Engagement Producer, Megan Dunford, is challenging herself to learn sign language

“I’m really enjoying testing my newfound signing skills with students from Milestone School; they always correct me when I’m struggling and it’s keeping me motivated! I practice at home through an online course, after completing my taster course through Gloucester College in Winter 2022. I’m hoping to do my level 1 at some point in the future.”

Our Technical Manager, Martin is competing in an international board game design competition

Our Technical Manager, Martin Worrall, has been getting creative designing his own board game for an international competition!

“I entered an International Board Game Design competition in July 2021 run by a games publisher based in China. I entered a Strategy game which I started work on in October 2016!

I’ve always been interested in Antarctic exploration and after playing the boardgames ‘Terraforming Mars’, ‘18XX’ and ‘Scythe’ and was inspired to create my own.

Called ‘Terra Nullius: Antarctica’, the premise is an alternative history where the ice sheet covering Antarctica has melted and the continent thaws out. You play a Nation trying to claim regions of land on which to operate your industries. Who can manage their nation’s resources most efficiently and become the most profitable nation?

I’ve made it down to the final 10 from an initial 130 and will find out in mid-April if I have made it to the final 5 with the winners announced in mid-June.”

Martin also hosts our very own board games evening every Monday at 6.30pm in Eric’s bar. It’s been growing steadily for months and now includes a pre-game pizza session. There’s no need to book, please feel free to join us!

New Quiz Night at The Roses

Looking for a local night out in Tewkesbury, how about joining our brand new Quiz Night?

On the second Tuesday of every month starting on the 11th of April we will be hosting a quiz night from 7.30pm in Eric’s Bar. There’s no need to book, just come along and get quizzing!

New Shows

Many theatres, including The Roses, used to launch their events in seasons, often just a month or two prior to their start.

Over the years the industry has moved away from this (although we still produce our well-read season brochure) as the longer an event is on sale, the better it does (and thanks to our incredible audiences, yourselves included, we now do sell out most events here).

Promoters like to get on sale the moment the ink is dry on the contract, often so they can start furiously marketing it themselves, and for this reason you can often find shows on sale over a year ahead of their visit to us. Here’s a round up of shows we have put on sale but haven’t actively announced yet... until now, to you.

New Once More – Fashion Re-Imagined

Get a new summer wardrobe by becoming a Rent Girl, OAP or Fixer

At this time of year, as the days gets longer and warmer, you may well be thinking about a new summer wardrobe. But perhaps a spring clean is more in order?

Clothes cost more than just the price tag:

• We buy three times as many as we did in 1980 and wear them for half as long.

• Three out of five garments go to landfill within one year of purchase.

• Only 2% of the people who make our clothes earn a living wage.

• If the fashion industry were a country, it would rank just behind the USA and China in terms of greenhouse emissions. These are just some of the jaw dropping statistics revealed in the eye opening new film FASHION REIMAGINED, an often shocking but ultimately inspiring expose of the environmental and ethical cost of keeping up with the latest trends. It seems that the devil doesn’t just wear Prada… he also manufactures, distributes and sells it. Fashion designer and daughter of environmental activists Amy Powney was determined to change this. The film documents her mission to create the world’s first truly ethical and sustainable collection and transform the way we think about the clothes we wear. Her quest took her around the world in search of planet and people friendly wool and cotton, meeting farmers, factory and field workers, weavers, spinners, dyers and some very cute Alpacas. The result was Mother of Pearl’s awarding winning No Frills collection and a shift in the way the industry thought about sustainability. Several other labels have subsequently launched sustainable collections. And she didn’t stop there. Industry is only part of the solution and Powney is keen to remind us that we can all make all difference, sometimes without even making a purchase. In 2020, she launched a social media campaign inviting participants to make “wardrobe pledges” such as:

• Become an Over sharer - Share and overwear.

• Become a Fixer – If it’s broke, fix it.

• Become an OAP (Old Age Purchaser) - Buy vintage and second-hand.

• Become a Rent Girl - Try before you buy or rent.

Supporters include Alexa Chung, Jameela Jamil and Arizona Muse. So perhaps this year, your new wardrobe can be your or someone else’s old one?

FASHION REIMAGINED plays at The Roses on Monday 24 and Wednesday 25 April. For more information and ideas on how you can enjoy fashion while respecting the planet, visit www.fashionreimaginedfilm.com/take-action

Fashion Challenge

Inspired by Fashion ReImagined star Amy Powney? Our very own costume designer Mel has a fashion challenge just for you! Here’s how you can upcycle an old t-shirt into a tote bag in a no-sew upcycle challenge.

1. Cut the sleeves off

2. Cut the neckline area off

3. Determine how deep you want the bag to be and cut the bottom of the t-shirt to this depth.

4. Cut fringe about 3/4 to 1 inch apart.

5. Tie the fringe strands together in pairs all the way along.

6. To close the holes now tie one of the strands from each knot with a strand to the left and the other with a strand to the right all the way along. And voila! An old t-shirt made new that you can use all through the summer.

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF...

Front of House & Facilities Manager

In the past year lots has changed at The Roses including some changes to our staff team. One of the newer members of the team is our Front of House & Facilities Manager, Paul Fordham. Since joining, Paul has brought a slice of humour to some of the daily goings on in our theatre and we thought them well worth sharing as a behind the scenes insight. What made you want to join The Roses Theatre?

I did my first pantomime at The Roses in the cast of ‘93 and have performed in various shows at The Roses in the years since then as a professional singer. Upon deciding to step away from being on the stage last year, I knew I’d still want to work in the performing arts somehow. It became a joke where my friends would ask what will you do when you stop singing? “I’ll run The Roses”, I’d say! And as though it was meant to be when I decided to stop singing lots of new jobs were coming up at The Roses as we emerged from covid. I applied for all of them! But when I saw the job specification for ‘Front of House Manager’ I knew it was the perfect fit. What does a day at The Roses as Front of House & Facilities Manager look like?

I normally arrive at the theatre first at about 8.45am and number one on the list is always to sweep the theatre to check everything is as it should be before opening the building. The next tasks are to setup the daily report, where we note all the events, which staff are in, audience numbers, and any issues arising and to check the one from the previous day. The final task before opening to the public is to switch on the allimportant coffee machine, the life blood of a theatre if we’ve a late finish at a live the night before. Throughout the day I’ll usually be checking emails, meeting with the team and if I’m Duty Manager for the day ensuring everything is setup for events. Tasks can range from renewing the theatre’s insurance to ordering towel dispensers for the toilets, it’s all important to a well-run theatre.

Ahead of a live performance or a film, usually towards the end of the day, I’ll liaise with performers and the tech team to make sure everything is set up. Key questions include checking if there’s any merchandise, finding out what the cues for the end of show will be and asking performers if they are happy to support our 50/50 fundraising raffle. Once all this is done, we are then ready to open the house and welcome audiences. My role is to host everyone at this point and make sure everyone has everything they need preshow, during the interval and post-show to make sure a great time is being had by all, after all we are here to entertain you!

What are your highlights in the role so far?

I joined during panto season so was in straight at the deep end but, whilst relentless as there’s often three shows a day, it was a lot of fun. Working with a team of people who all want to produce great work is the best part and has given me purpose in life.

Buck Up Backstage

A couple of months ago you might remember the cast of our pantomime, Snow White, shouting about our campaign to ‘Buck Up Backstage!’. We were delighted to raise a fantastic £10,000 from the generosity of our audiences and local community. Before we can book our build though we still need to raise some more. We are particularly keen to hear from local businesses who may be able to make donations or in-kind support with everything from help with asbestos removal to a new shower. Our full shopping list can be found on our original campaign page via our website: www.rosestheatre.org/support-us/donate/buck-up-backstage
