Founder
and Executive Director
of The Roots of Music
In 2007, Derrick Tabb saw the need for youth programming post Hurricane Katrina Starting as a 6-week percussion program at Tipitina’s bar uptown, the organization quickly grew in response to the overwhelming need for youth programming and, in particular, music programming Throughout the years, The Roots of Music has grown to become an anchor in our city’s musical and cultural communities
Dear Roots Friends and Family, Firstly, I want to express my undying gratitude for the support I have received in my role as Executive Director Leading such an impressive and important organization is an honor and the community that has sprouted up around it has only made this honor feel even more special. In 2024, The Roots of Music reached new, exciting heights From stepping up our programming to elevating our performances, our organization has barely had a second to catch its breath However, now taking a moment to reflect on what a year it truly has been, we look back with pride at our accomplishments
It’s easy to feel prideful of our students, as they perform year round, across the city, for so many different ears to hear From ages three to eighteen, every single one of the children that we mentor and teach bring us so much joy They will surely move forward in this world with the utmost potential for great things
The staff of The Roots of Music are nothing short of amazing and I am so appreciative for each one of them Our staff Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Doctor Shawnell Ware, works daily with our students and has increased our ability to serve the families of the New Orleans community Our other staff members including the band instructors, administrative team, and programming staff have done a wonderful job of keeping Roots running over this past year
At the end of the day, there’s the undeniable truth that none of this would be possible without the support of our board members, donors, volunteers, and community partners Thank you to our board who work to uplift us and bolster our mission Thank you to everyone who has donated in 2024 and beyond Thank you to the parents and community members who have dedicated their time to us in any form And lastly, thank you to our partners for making so much of our programming a raging success We really could not do it without you all and are grateful you ’ re a part of our family.

Mission
We believe music has the power to transform lives The Roots of Music empowers the youth of New Orleans through music education, academic support, and mentorship, while preserving and promoting the unique musical and cultural heritage of our city Our program provides music history and theory as well as instrumental instruction and ensemble performance preparation We serve kids ages 3-18 from low-income households, and provide our students with hot meals and round-trip transportation to reduce common barriers to participation.

Dear Roots Family,
A few words come to mind when I reflect on all the events, activities, and developments of 2024: connection, intentionality, and joy
First off, connection We have been building connections between students and families, schools, community partners, and supporters near and far for almost 18 years These links have brought our organization new opportunities for funding and scholarships for our students, pulled in referrals to our Marching Crusaders and Roots Studio Academy programs, and broadened our exposure locally and nationally
Meanwhile, I see our Board of Directors and Staff moving forward with intentionality as TROM grows and evolves Each decision is made with great care and mindfulness to ensure that it benefits the young people we serve This is really a “dream team,” ably managing both the day-today and big picture thinking
Lastly, I am blown away by the joy that TROM brings to our community
The moment our students start playing, people are caught up in the positive energy of young people joined together to create something beautiful: and their sound is mighty!
If music is a universal language, then I believe we are reaching an everwidening audience with our story. It is a privilege to serve as Board President at this exciting point in our narrative.

Who we serve
Our students come from 23 different schools across New Orleans
We currently serve 180 students in our marching crusaders program alone
The Roots of Music provides over 250 instruments for student use for free 5 students from our Roots studio academy attended the berklee 5-week summer program
WE taught 23 students between the ages of 3 and 8 in our sprouts of music program
Programs Summary
Sprouts of Music
The Sprouts of Music is an early music education program for students ages 3-8. Throughout the school year The Roots of Music will instruct students in the elements of music theory, singing, and movement Our curriculum is designed to educate our youth in a fun and safe environment and to reinforce the skills learned in their music classroom This program is made possible through the generosity of The Bayou District Foundation and is only available at select partner schools
Marching Crusaders
Our flagship marching band program, the Marching Crusaders, serves students ages 9-14 Our after-school program provides music classes, academic support and homework assistance, instrument repair and maintenance, round trip transportation, and daily hot meals We offer holistic care by offering social services through our on-staff social worker, as well as enrichment opportunities The kids in this program have the chance to perform at Mardi Gras parades, festivals, around New Orleans, and gigs across the country and world!
Five days a week, 12 months a year, this program delivers over 2,500 hours of instrumental music education, music theory and other academic tutoring, over 30,400 nutritious hot meals, 1,400 bus journeys, and supplies up to 200 instruments for student use free of charge Applicants are not required to have any musical background but applicants must attend an Orleans Parish School and qualify for free/reduced lunch to be eligible for enrollment in the program.
Roots Studio Academy
The Roots Studio Academy is an audio engineering and studio production program for youth ages 15 – 18 years Roots Studio Academy is a 10-month intensive designed to teach youth how to run their own music production business Participants will become certified in industrystandard software as well as gain experience with live audio recording, studio recording, and engineering/mixing In addition, they will learn music theory, financial literacy, and business management Students will graduate with everything they need to know to support their careers as music creators and producers

Marching to mardi gras gala
The Roots of Music hosted a celebration of its seventeenth year in november of 2024.
As the rumble of snare drums slowly approached, the audience grew quiet, knowing who to expect The Marching Crusaders turned the corner and applause broke out throughout all of the Louisiana Children’s Museum The night of Roots’ Marching to Mardi Gras Gala was one to remember for students and patrons alike.
In November of 2024, The Roots of Music held its largest fundraising event of the year at the children’s museum in New Orleans’ City Park Attendees had the opportunity to bid on some amazing silent auction prizes, play in the interactive exhibits the museum had to offer, and watch not only the Marching Crusaders but also Tarriona “Tank” Ball as they performed The night itself was one full of joy, good food and drink, and altruism Our gala guests were encouraged to dress to our Mardi Gras theme and did not disappoint!
This gala and fundraiser would not have been possible without the generosity of our sponsors The Roots of Music would love to extend a huge thank you to every individual and company that donated to make this event happen. We are especially thankful for Blue Runner, our presenting sponsor, for all that they contributed to this evening
Our partner Blue Runner has done so much for us throughout 2024, that we needed to give them their very own shout out and appreciation!
In the year 2024, Blue Runner released a commercial and campaign dedicated to The Roots of Music, called “Keep the Beat” Through this campaign, a portion of canned goods proceeds were donated to Roots Blue Runner had in-store activations dedicated to us, invited us over to play at Gretna Fest, and, as mentioned above, were the presenting sponsor of our gala in the fall We are grateful for all the amazing work Blue Runner has done with our organization and we look forward to whatever comes next!
2024 Highlights
THe Lewis prize for mu
In January of 2024, The Roots of Music receive Accelerator Award from The Lewis Prize for Music that allocates $500,000 to music education pro globally As The Lewis Prize sunsets this award, Th of Music will be one of the last organizations to rec prize.
Mardi Gras
ing Mardi Gras, our students get to showcase what ve been working on all year! The Crusaders marched ly 26 miles in seven different parades. From Krewe of t to Bacchus, our students shined like gold across the city!
Healthy Blue Fun Day
In April of 2024, we hosted a “fun day” for our students that involved an Easter egg hunt, lots of fun with water guns, and the distribution of hygiene bags donated by our partner Healthy Blue Louisiana
Jazz Fest
The Marching Crusaders took Jazz Fest by storm in May. We paraded around the Fair Grounds and landed at the Oschner's Children's Tent where we rounded out our performance. Visitors from far and wide got the opportunity to see our band play!
&T + Compudopt Laptop Giveaway
partnered with Compudopt and Roots in July to te a computer giveaway at our headquarters We ble to offer hundreds of families laptops free of charge
INstrument REPAIR PROGRAM
In August, we sent off two young adults to participate in the Band Instrument Repair program in Minnesota. These two individuals will complete the course and return to New Orleans with the capacity to work with Roots as instrument repair specialists.

n October 2024, we received a shipment of new truments for student use, thanks to the funds we ed from the 2023 Recreation and Culture Fund New eans City Council members came out to Roots to atulate us in person for this exciting addition to our resources
Holiday Concert
The Marching Crusaders and Roots Studio Academy programs wrapped up 2024 with a holiday concert held in the St. Peter Claver Catholic Church. This beautiful concert was such a joyous and wholesome way to end the year!
