ENSURING ACCESSIBILITY
This week alone, I received an email from the head of a school who wants to visit Roeper to learn from a highly regarded school for the gifted; was the subject of one magazine article discussing our forward-thinking approach to student assessment; approached by another magazine that wants to feature us among the Top 10 Schools to watch in the USA for 2024; and participated in a conversation with a select group of heads representing a half-dozen of the country’s best schools for gifted children Roeper’s reputation as the leading pre-K to 12 school for gifted education in the United States is alive and well even among our peers
And while it is an amazing feeling to be the Head of School of such an exceptional school, I know that we have not maintained that reputation by standing still To continue to be leaders in the field of gifted education means that we as a school continue to evolve, explore, and experiment We also need to ensure that the great education we offer is accessible to a group of gifted learners as diverse as we can possibly make it
That commitment to accessibility is demonstrated in our —
✔ Financial Aid Program. With 40% of Roeper families receiving assistance, we are well above (between 25% and 50% above, depending on the comparator group) the average of other independent schools Over the past two years, we have also formed new partnerships and introduced new processes so that our decision-making is informed, efficient, and bias-free
✔ Scholarship Task Force. This interdisciplinary group is leading the effort to explore new sources of funding and new partnerships in order to expand scholarship offerings to prospective students
✔ Refined Admissions Process. We have reviewed and updated our admissions process to ensure that we are considering the whole child and the full range of behaviours reflective of Roeper’s definition of giftedness, including reducing our reliance on conventional IQ tests, which are both biased and limited in the data they provide
✔ Plan for Campus Improvements. Our Facilities department is partnering with a landscape architect to design improvement plans for the physical accessibility of our buildings and grounds, especially on the multi-building Lower School campus in Bloomfield Hills
✔ New Communications Approaches. Our Communications department is implementing new tactics and refining messaging strategies to sustain engagement and to broaden our reach, ensuring the Roeper story is being heard by all who need to hear it
✔ Implementation and Enhancement of Leading-Edge Programs With the introduction of a makerspace on the Lower School campus and enhancements to our course registration and timetabling processes, students are able to access a more diverse array of course options
As you read through the pages of this edition of Keeping in Touch, I hope you will see how, through these and so many more projects, we are continuing to advance the Roeper mission and are sharing it with the world ✦
To continue to be leaders in the field of gifted education means that we as a school continue to evolve, explore, and experiment .

We are confident that The Roeper School will continue to be a leader in gifted education, a model of diversity and inclusion, and a catalyst for positive change in the world .
KIT
FROM THE CHAIR
The Roeper School has always been much more than a place of learning It is a community of students, teachers, administrators, parents, alumni, and friends who share a vision of scholarship, creativity, and social responsibility We came to Roeper 16 years ago in search for a preschool for our children When we came to Roeper we knew we had found a place where our children would be loved and supported We were asking for much more than a great education, and Roeper has continued to deliver We are forever grateful for the foundation Roeper has provided our children as we watch them continue to grow and thrive
What we did not expect was to find a place for our entire family We have grown so much as parents in this community We not only found a home for our children, but we also found a home for us as well This is why the volunteer positions my wife and I have filled over the years have felt more like pleasure than work, and why we always donate to the Annual Fund and other fundraising efforts
We have always been impressed by how many people feel like we do and put so much into helping Roeper continue to thrive We are deeply thankful for the donations, volunteer hours, and words of encouragement that Roeper receives from our parents, alumni, and friends
As we look ahead to the future, we are confident that The Roeper School will continue to be a leader in gifted education, a model of diversity and inclusion, and a catalyst for positive change in the world
Together, we can create a great future for the Roeper School and for our children
Thank you for being part of our community ✦

FINANCIAL OVERVIEW 2022/2023
Roeper continued its path of returning to normal operations post the Covid-19 pandemic With the focus squarely on supporting our students, faculty and staff, Christopher Federico, Dave Fluent, and the Finance Committee worked together closely to ensure the school would provide the best program possible to our community
Using the framework of Roeper’s Strategic Plan, the team focused on sub-elements of the strategy that continue to be critical for Roeper’s long-term sustainability:
Support and Attract Great Faculty and Staff — Roeper’s longevity is due to the strength of the faculty and administration The retention of our talented teachers and staff is vital to Roeper’s long-term success We are pleased to share that during the 2022/2023 school year, salaries increased by 4 0% and are at the benchmark salaries of other Midwestern independent schools
Invest in Best-in-Class Facilities — Roeper completed the Birmingham campus third-floor learning resources space in the fall of 2022 In addition, the Adams Park project was finished which included upgrades for our athletics program
Invest in Academic Program — Roeper continued to focus on delivering the best program to its students The leadership structure of the Middle/Upper School was reorganized; a Middle/Upper School Director and two Deans of Students were hired The Lower School hired an Academic Interventionalist to improve instructional support services for our students (A Dean of Students was also added to the Lower School for the 2023/2024 school year ) These investments in our program enable the school to continue delivering a great personalized education and improve student retention
Grow the Endowment and Annual Fund — The Malone Family Foundation donated $500,000 Roeper’s total Annual Fund, a key source of funding for the school’s operation, increased 5% to $259,000 because of increased participation and significant lead gifts By continuing to grow the endowment and annual fund, we will be able to provide increased funding for Roeper’s operations as we strive to keep tuition affordable
Support the Mission through Increased Financial Aid — While financial strength is important to the long-term viability of the school, it is only one element that defines Roeper’s success George and Annemarie founded the school to provide education to children of all income levels Roeper was able to continue to provide $2 8 million in financial aid dollars to attract and retain talented young people and their families in our community Financial aid is a critical element of Roeper’s financial model as more than 30% of Roeper’s net tuition revenue comes from families who receive financial aid
The 2022/2023 school year had challenges, including the replacement of the Birmingham campus boiler and a slight decrease in enrollment, but our summer programs underwent significant growth in enrollment and revenue While these types of experiences can impact finances and operations, our years of sound decision-making between the school leadership and finance committee allow us to maintain our program, support the Roeper community, and continue to build our longer-term financial strength in support of future students and families ✦

KIT ROEPER GOLF OUTING 2023
On a windy yet sunny Friday last summer the Roeper community came out in force to support Roeper Athletics The new venue, Westwynd Golf Course, proved to be a challenge for golfers, but the service and food were top notch Led by the efforts of the Sponsorship Committee, captained by Kevin Carlson and Dan Salinas, the Roeper Golf Outing had 23 sponsors who aided in our efforts to raise funds for Roeper Athletics The combination of this number of sponsors and the highest number of golfers in years made this outing a huge success The annual outing helps to raise funds that enhance the Roughrider experience for our student athletes Past outings have allowed Roeper Athletics to improve graphics in the CCB, purchase a pitching machine for baseball, purchase a shooting machine for basketball and help to cover overnight tournament trips for teams Special thanks to our Presenting Sponsor Ben Murphy as well as our Hole-inOne Sponsor Nobl9 (Dan Salinas), and the other sponsors who contributed We look forward to another fun-filled outing this summer ✦

KIT REV UP FOR ROEPER!
WHO WAS MARIANN HOAG?
At the heart of The Roeper School’s history lies the indomitable spirit of Mariann Hoag, a dedicated individual who spent an astonishing 60 years nurturing the Roeper community with her unwavering commitment to its philosophy and the financial aid program Mariann believed in making a Roeper education accessible to all, regardless of financial constraints Her dedication to this cause went beyond a mere administrative role; it was a testament to her commitment to changing the lives of generations of Roeper students
Mariann had a profound respect for the students and this place You may see her words around campus and on posters and T-shirts worn by our faculty and staff
Take care of yourself Take care of each other Take care of this place
Her heart was always with Roeper, and her efforts in financial aid were a manifestation of a deep-rooted belief that a Roeper education was something of value
WHAT IS THE MARIANN HOAG SCHOLARSHIP DINNER?
To commemorate her enduring legacy, after her passing in 2009, the financial aid program was renamed the Mariann Hoag Financial Aid Grant Award Program, encompassing all scholarship fundraising efforts at Roeper One such effort is the bi-annual Mariann Hoag Scholarship Dinner which combines elements of celebration, community, and our shared commitment to education
This year’s Scholarship Dinner will be held on Saturday, April 20, 2024 .
The evening will kick off with a prelude at 5:00pm at the M1 Concourse in Pontiac, Michigan Attendees can expect an exciting atmosphere with champagne, race day delicacies, photo opportunities with race cars, race simulators, a silent auction of classroom items, live auction items and a paddle-raise opportunity
The festivities will conclude with a Dinner Destination Reveal at 6:30pm, at which time attendees will be given the green flag and disperse to host-family homes for a delightful dining experience
More information to come Tickets will be available for purchase very soon
As we rev-up our engines and paddle-up to ensure scholarship funding, we are grateful that Mariann’s legacy continues to drive positive change, inspiring us to make education accessible and empowering for generations to come Rev Up for Roeper! ✦

Everything we all love about Roeper is made possible by your generosity and people like you who reaffirm and insure our pioneering standing .
KITPARTING THOUGHTS
From September 2023 to March 2024 of this current academic year, I have also been serving as the Interim Director of Admissions with the privilege of joining the talented team of Admission colleagues Jason McIntosh, Kellie Bagne, and Brittney Yuille They are remarkable caretakers of the Roeper mission and offer extraordinary guidance for families considering The Roeper School And now we are delighted to welcome Sarah Hermann as the newly named Director of Enrollment and Financial Aid
I have described my prior relationship to Admissions as being “adjacent” to the vital function of “allowing children to participate in the shaping of their own destiny and to consciously prepare them for it ”
In my longstanding role as Director of Development, my focus has been on seeking support to sustain this amazing community Everything we all love about Roeper is made possible by your generosity, and people like you — parents and grandparents, alumni and trustees, faculty and staff, foundations and corporations, and friends — who reaffirm and insure our pioneering standing The view from the philanthropy perch is stunning in its simple calculation of connecting resources to need It is deeply fulfilling and routinely includes meaningful interactions with current Roeperians
However, these last few months have afforded an unexpected and wonderful bonus! I am gifted with the honor of receiving future Roeperians Their joy is demonstrably profound and reminds me of an important conversation I shared with Annemarie Roeper many years ago She believed that I would be deeply impacted by “witnessing the journey ” In this moment, that pleasure is no longer adjacent, and I am moved beyond words
With deep gratitude, we offer our thanks Please keep in touch …
