ARTEMIS

IN A WORLD WHERE EVEN THE EXTRAORDINARY CAN FEEL EXPECTED, THE ROLLS-ROYCE COUPÉTAIL DARES TO TRANSCEND. INSPIRED BY THE ELUSIVE 1935 PHANTOM II COUPÉ, IT IS A MASTERSTROKE OF HERITAGE, INDIVIDUALITY, AND ENGINEERING NOT MERELY COMMISSIONED, BUT CONJURED BY THE VISION OF ITS OWNER FROM GEMSTONE-INSPIRED HUES TO MATERIALS THAT ECHO PERSONAL NARRATIVES, EVERY DETAIL IS A TRIBUTE TO UNCOMPROMISED SELF-EXPRESSION THIS ISN’T SIMPLY BESPOKE IT’S MYTHMAKING

LORENZO QUINN, SON OF OSCAR-WINNING ACTOR ANTHONY QUINN, HAS QUIETLY FORGED A LEGACY THAT IS ENTIRELY HIS OWN. A LEADING FIGURE IN CONTEMPORARY SCULPTURE, THE ITALIAN ARTIST DRAWS UPON THE GRANDEUR OF MICHELANGELO, THE INTENSITY OF BERNINI, AND THE EMOTIVE POWER OF RODIN YET HIS VOICE IS WHOLLY

ORIGINAL RENOWNED FOR HIS EVOCATIVE RENDERINGS OF THE HUMAN HAND, QUINN CONSIDERS IT THE MOST EXPRESSIVE AND TECHNICALLY CHALLENGING PART OF THE BODY:

“THE HAND HOLDS SO MUCH POWER TO LOVE, TO HATE, TO CREATE, TO DESTROY ”

NOW, QUINN LENDS HIS MASTERY TO A STORIED EMBLEM THE SPIRIT OF ECSTASY, ROLLS-ROYCE’S ICONIC MUSE FOR OVER A CENTURY, IS REBORN AS ARTEMIS A SCULPTURAL EMBODIMENT OF STRENGTH, GRACE, AND INDIVIDUALITY BOLD YET REVERENT, THIS REIMAGINING BRIDGES HERITAGE AND MODERNITY, CAPTURING THE COUPÉTAIL’S ETHOS OF FEARLESS INNOVATION PRESENTED ON THE GRILLE, WITHIN THE CABIN, AND AS A WORK OF ART IN ITS OWN RIGHT, ARTEMIS BECOMES NOT MERELY A SYMBOL BUT A STATEMENT.

WHERE RED SOLES MEET RUSTIC SOULS

If Christian Louboutin were to conjure a hotel, you’d expect something flirtatious, opulent, and unmistakably red And Vermelho his seductive 13-room hideaway in the hushed Portuguese village of Melides is exactly that: a love letter in lacquer, silk, and sun-warmed terracotta. This is no mere designer vanity project; it’s Louboutin’s most personal creation to date part fantasy, part autobiography, and entirely fabulous.

Set beneath Alentejo’s cinematic skies, Vermelho (Portuguese for “red”) wears its name with quiet confidence. From scarlet window frames to crimson tiles and lacquered stairwells, Louboutin’s signature hue is the heartbeat of the space never overbearing, always deliberate. The property, designed in collaboration with architect Madalena Caiado and interior designer Carolina Irving, blurs the line between boutique hotel and private museum Each room, each corner, each view is a curated composition of beauty and memory: Rajasthani glass tiles, Egyptian alabaster, handpainted Portuguese azulejos, and Venetian mirrors mingle in stylish harmony.

The maximalism is anything but chaotic. It's storytelling through objects ceramic parrots and Bollywood posters cheekily rub shoulders with Murano glass lamps and antique Spanish chests This is Louboutin’s world: cosmopolitan, cultured, and always a little mischievous

Vermelho Melides

R Dr Evaristo Sousa Gago 2, 7570-635 Melides, Portugal

By contrast, the guest rooms whisper rather than shout While each is distinct some with garden terraces, others with opulent soaking tubs beneath the stars they share a languid elegance. Heated floors, Kama Ayurveda amenities, and buttery Frette robes speak to quiet indulgence Art by Konstantin Kakanias, woven among sea-shell sconces and moody parquet, reminds you: you’re sleeping inside a designer’s reverie

And Melides? Still deliciously under the radar A village suspended in time, surrounded by rice paddies, forests, and an endless Atlantic horizon But with Vermelho drawing a discreetly glamorous crowd and Louboutin quietly building an empire of sensual sanctuaries it won’t stay a secret for long

This is not just where fashion goes on holiday This is where it goes to live beautifully

CÉLESTE BOURSIER-MOUGENOT

- PINAULT COLLECTION

C L I N A M E N

BEGINNING JUNE 5, THE BOURSE DE COMMERCE PINAULT COLLECTION SURRENDERS ITS MONUMENTAL ROTUNDA TO THE POETIC INCURSIONS OF CÉLESTE BOURSIER-MOUGENOT, WHOSE IMMERSIVE INSTALLATION CLINAMEN UNFOLDS AT AN UNPRECEDENTED SCALE AN 18METER BASIN OF WATER BLUE AS A SUMMER SKY REFLECTS THE VAST DOME OVERHEAD, INVITING VISITORS INTO A SPACE WHERE ARCHITECTURE AND SOUND CONVERGE IN SUBLIME RESONANCE. WHITE CERAMIC BOWLS DRIFT WEIGHTLESSLY ACROSS THIS EXPANSE, PROPELLED BY A BARELY PERCEPTIBLE CURRENT. EACH BOWL COLLIDES WITH ANOTHER TO PRODUCE ETHEREAL TONES RANDOM, DELICATE, YET PROFOUND A SELFGENERATING SYMPHONY THAT DEFIES THE CONVENTIONS OF PERFORMANCE

THIS CHOREOGRAPHY OF CHANCE EVOKES THE EPICUREAN NOTION OF CLINAMEN, THE SWERVE OF ATOMS IN THE VOID A REMINDER OF THE UNIVERSE’S INHERENT UNPREDICTABILITY IN BOURSIER-MOUGENOT’S HANDS, SOUND ITSELF BECOMES A LIVING MATERIAL, FREED FROM THE STRICTURES OF COMPOSITION HERE, MUSIC IS NOT PERFORMED BUT RATHER EMERGES, UNBIDDEN, FROM THE GENTLE COLLISION OF OBJECT AND FORCE, CRAFTING A SONIC TAPESTRY THAT IS BOTH FLEETING AND INFINITE.

EMMA LAVIGNE, CHIEF CURATOR AND GENERAL DIRECTOR OF THE PINAULT COLLECTION, SITUATES THIS WORK WITHIN A LINEAGE THAT STRETCHES FROM THE IRREVERENT DETOURNEMENT OF DADA AND THE SUBVERSIVE WIT OF FLUXUS TO THE RAW INVENTIVENESS OF NEW YORK’S PUNK AND EXPERIMENTAL SCENES BOURSIER-MOUGENOT’S ART IS

RESOLUTELY ANTI-HIERARCHICAL: THE EVERYDAY CERAMIC BOWL IS RECAST AS A SOPHISTICATED INSTRUMENT, ITS FAMILIAR DOMESTICITY TRANSFORMED INTO A VEHICLE FOR TRANSCENDENCE IN THIS ALCHEMICAL PROCESS, THE ARTIST BOTH CELEBRATES AND DISSOLVES THE BOUNDARIES BETWEEN ART AND LIFE

WITH CLINAMEN, THE ROTUNDA ITSELF BECOMES A VESSEL OF INTROSPECTION A PLACE WHERE TIME SEEMS TO DILATE AND CONTRACT, WHERE SILENCE AND SOUND INTERTWINE IN A PERPETUAL DANCE.

THE INSTALLATION INVITES EACH VISITOR TO LOSE THEMSELVES IN ITS SERENE CHAOS, TO ENCOUNTER THE WONDER OF AN EVER-RENEWING PRESENT IN THIS REALM, ART IS NOT A STATIC OBJECT BUT AN INVITATION TO EMBRACE THE FRAGILE, BEAUTIFUL CONTINGENCY OF BEING.

IT IS A TESTAMENT TO BOURSIER-MOUGENOT’S CONVICTION THAT THE MOST PROFOUND EXPERIENCES ARISE NOT FROM CONTROL, BUT FROM THE ART OF LETTING GO

THE GRAND EGYPTIAN MUSEUM - EGYPT’S RECLAMATION OF ITS TIMELESS LEGACY

E G Y P T ’ S G E M

IN THE SHADOW OF THE PYRAMIDS OF GIZA, WHERE HISTORY RISES LIKE HEAT FROM DESERT STONE, THE GRAND EGYPTIAN MUSEUM (GEM) EMERGES A $1 BILLION ARCHITECTURAL MARVEL AND THE MOST AMBITIOUS CULTURAL PROJECT OF THE CENTURY TWO DECADES IN THE MAKING, THIS SPRAWLING COMPLEX ISN’T MERELY A MUSEUM IT IS EGYPT’S BOLD DECLARATION OF OWNERSHIP OVER ITS ANCIENT NARRATIVE, HOUSED IN LIGHT-DRENCHED HALLS OF TRAVERTINE AND GLASS.

DESIGNED BY HENEGHAN PENG WITH A FAÇADE INSPIRED BY THE GEOMETRY OF THE PYRAMIDS, GEM SPANS 117 ACRES AND OFFERS AN EXPERIENCE AS CINEMATIC AS IT IS SCHOLARLY A TOWERING STATUE OF RAMSES II GREETS VISITORS, ANCHORING A SPACE THAT BLENDS ANTIQUITY WITH MODERNITY WITHIN, OVER 100,000 ARTIFACTS, MANY NEVER BEFORE SEEN, CHART THE EVOLUTION OF ONE OF HUMANITY’S MOST ENDURING CIVILIZATIONS

AT THE HEART OF THE GRAND EGYPTIAN MUSEUM’S SWEEPING VISION LIES ITS MOST LUMINOUS TREASURE: TUTANKHAMUN FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE HOWARD CARTER PRIED OPEN THE SEALED TOMB IN 1922, THE ENTIRETY OF THE BOY KING’S BURIAL COLLECTION MORE THAN 5,000 ARTIFACTS WILL BE PRESENTED TOGETHER IN A SINGLE, SOARING NARRATIVE HIS GOLDEN COFFIN, DELICATE CEREMONIAL SANDALS, INTRICATELY CARVED BED, EVEN THE LINEN SHROUDS THAT ONCE TOUCHED HIS SKIN EACH OBJECT WHISPERS OF RITUAL, POWER, AND A LIFE BOTH OPULENT AND FLEETING. ONCE SCATTERED ACROSS ARCHIVES, FRAGMENTED IN TEMPORARY EXHIBITIONS, OR HIDDEN FROM PUBLIC VIEW ALTOGETHER, THESE PIECES NOW REUNITE, NOT JUST AS MUSEUM PIECES, BUT AS A HAUNTINGLY INTIMATE PORTRAIT OF YOUTH, DIVINITY, AND MYTH

STEPHEN GRUENBERG, PART OF THE MUSEUM’S

ELITE DESIGN TEAM, HAS SUGGESTED THAT GEM MAY WELL SURPASS EVEN THE GREAT CULTURAL CITADELS OF THE WEST THE LOUVRE, THE BRITISH MUSEUM, BERLIN’S NEUES MUSEUM NOT ONLY IN SCALE, BUT IN SOUL FOR THIS IS NOT A BORROWED IDENTITY CURATED THROUGH COLONIAL GLASS, BUT A CIVILIZATION IN DIALOGUE WITH ITSELF

BUT GEM IS MORE THAN A CULTURAL SHOWCASE. IT IS A DIPLOMATIC ARTIFACT IN ITSELF, A TESTAMENT TO INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION PARTICULARLY BETWEEN EGYPT AND JAPAN, VIA JICA AND A STRATEGIC PIVOT TOWARD REDEFINING EGYPT’S GLOBAL IMAGE POSITIONED JUST 15 MINUTES FROM THE NEW SPHINX AIRPORT, GEM IS A GATEWAY TO BOTH PAST AND FUTURE, DRAWING TOURISTS INTO A LAYERED EGYPT WHERE BEACH RESORTS AND SACRED TOMBS NOW COEXIST ON CURATED ITINERARIES RESORTS AND SACRED TOMBS NOW COEXIST ON CURATED ITINERARIES THIS IS NOT NOSTALGIA. THIS IS NOT RESTITUTION.

THE GRAND EGYPTIAN MUSEUM IS A RESURRECTION. AND IT IS EGYPT, AT LAST, TELLING ITS OWN STORY IN ITS OWN VOICE, ON ITS OWN LAND

SYNTHESIS OF EASTERN METAPHYSICS AND WESTERN POP ICONOGRAPHY

Where Eastern metaphysics collides with Western Pop iconography, artist Jacky Tsai transcends boundaries—

Pow! Pow! Pow!, Jacky Tsai, Lacquer carving on wood panel, 2014
Fly Me to the Moon, Jacky Tsai, Lacquer carving on wood panel, 2014

Jacky Tsai, the London-based multimedia virtuoso, transcends mere art-making to orchestrate a provocative synthesis of Eastern metaphysics and Western Pop iconography His practice stretching from painstakingly crafted canvases to blockchain’s mutable frontiers dismantles cultural boundaries, forging new mythologies where heritage and futurity intertwine Educated at China Academy of Art and Central Saint Martins Tsai’s global exhibitions crowned by accolades such as “Artist of the Year” at Digital Art Fair Hong Kong bear witness to an oeuvre that is both an ode to craftsmanship and a challenge to the very temporality of art itself

Do you perceive the cultural roots and influences that shape your art as a kind of calling an inescapable destiny? Could you please share how this artistic journey first unfolded for you?

Absolutely. I’ve come to understand that the cultural forces shaping my work are not merely influences they’re a kind of destiny that I’ve learnt to embrace rather than escape I was born in Shanghai, a city that stands at the crossroads of deep-rooted Chinese heritage and the constant pulse of modern global culture That duality was never abstract to me it was my daily reality

My journey as an artist began with a fascination for

contrasts and contradictions: life and death, East and West, tradition and rebellion Early on, I was drawn to classical Chinese motifs not out of nostalgia, but because I saw in them a rich language of symbolism that could be stretched, deconstructed, and reassembled to speak to the present.

When I moved to London for my MA at Central Saint Martins, the shock of cultural dislocation only intensified my desire to find a visual language that could hold these opposing forces in one frame In that sense, I didn’t choose this path so much as I responded to it my art became a way of negotiating identity, displacement, and belonging It was, and continues to be, a calling

Puppets (Octagon), Jacky Tsai, Lacquer carving on wood panel,2022

If art is a dialogue between the past and the present, it could also be said that your work is a unique dialogue between East and West—a bridge and a point of tension between tradition and innovation. How do you navigate this delicate interplay?

This interplay isn’t something I consciously construct it’s the lens through which I naturally see the world. Growing up in Shanghai, then training in London, I’ve always existed between cultures, between timelines. My art became a way to reconcile that in-betweenness

I often merge traditional Chinese techniques and iconography with contemporary Western imagery not to contrast but to create a new visual language It’s less about fusion, more about transformation

Rather than choosing sides, I stay in the tension That’s where the energy is And that’s where something truly new can emerge

Considering the historical fascination with Chinoiserie in the West, do you see your work as contributing to a contemporary revival of this aesthetic? Would you describe yourself as helping to usher in a new era of Chinoiserie, or do you see your work as more of a reinterpretation of this dialogue between East and West?

I see my work less as a revival of Chinoiserie and more as a critical reinterpretation of it Chinoiserie, historically, was often a Western fantasy of the East ornamental, distant, and romanticised I’m more interested in turning that oneway gaze into a two-way conversation

By reclaiming traditional Chinese elements and recontextualising them through a contemporary lens, I aim to challenge outdated narratives while offering something new something rooted, but not nostalgic.

A new era of Chinoiserie must come from within the culture, not as imitation but as evolution. That, perhaps, is where my work finds its place.

Chinoiserie was never truly about China it was about Europe’s imagination of China A fantasy It was ornamental, exotic, and shaped by a colonial perspective

As a Chinese artist working globally, I feel both the weight and the irony of that legacy My response is neither to reject it nor to reproduce it, but to reclaim the narrative I use the same visual languages porcelain patterns, dragons, imperial motifs but place them in surreal, unexpected contexts that shift their meaning.

In doing so, I’m not just engaging with the legacy of Chinoiserie I’m challenging it. I want to replace the fantasy with something more self-aware, more layered, and above all, more honest.

Your latest projects span landscapes from the earth to the sea to the cosmos. Can you give us some insight on the genesis of these creations and the insights you think they provide to a global audience?

Each project whether a cruise ship, a train carriage, or a space-bound rocket started not with the vehicle but with the question: How far can art travel?

For me, these are not just modes of transport but moving canvases They carry not only people but also stories, symbols, and imagination Covering a cruise ship was about scale and spectacle; painting a train was about rhythm and journey; sending art into space was about transcendence placing human creativity into the vast unknown

What I hope these works offer is a sense of wonder and a reminder that art doesn’t have to live in white cubes It can move, launch, and even orbit just like ideas

In September 2019, Jacky Tsai collaborated with the Eastern & Oriental Express a Belmond train and the global conservation charity Save Wild Tigers to inaugurate the Tiger Express, a railway journey from Singapore to Bangkok designed to illuminate the precarious existence of the world’s last remaining wild tigers According to WWF, only 5,574 wild tigers now roam the planet As a Save Wild Tigers ambassador, Tsai adorned two carriages of the E&O train with his signature tiger-themed artistry, marrying cultural craftsmanship with environmental advocacy

On May 17, 2025 at 12:12 p.m. (0412 GMT), a hand-painted creation by the artist Jacky Tsai, the Zhuque-2E Y2 rocket, ascended from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Centre in northwest China, marking an extraordinary confluence of artistic expression and aerospace advancement.

Building on the acclaim of his Genting Dream hull design (2016), Jacky Tsai was commissioned in August 2017 to create a new concept for Dream Cruises’ named

World Dream. Entitled A Tale of Two Dreams, the work continues his whimsical love story between a mermaid and an astronaut, concluding their narrative while introducing fresh characters and a meditation on family, reunion, and the interplay of tradition and modernity. Tsai’s vivid visual language, punctuated by symbolic motifs from celestial watermelons to Chang’e’s dress interlaces cultural myths and contemporary symbols, crafting a cosmology of love, hope, and belonging

In what ways has the emergence of blockchain technology transformed your relationship with the art world—and perhaps even your own sense of artistic identity?

Blockchain didn’t change who I am as an artist, but it expanded the way my work can exist and be experienced. It challenged the boundaries between physical and digital, static and dynamic, limited and infinite.

What fascinates me is not just NFTs as collectibles but the possibility of building a living, evolving relationship between the artwork and the audience I’ve experimented with pieces that shift over time, respond to data, or integrate with physical displays like e-ink panels things that couldn’t exist without blockchain infrastructure

At the same time, I’m cautious Technology is a tool, not a substitute for meaning The goal is never to chase trends but to create work that’s conceptually strong whether it’s minted on-chain or painted on canvas.

As an artist deeply immersed in Chinese cultural symbolism, what profound philosophical questions about existence, transformation, and belonging do you grapple with through your creative practice?

My work isn’t so much about impermanence as it is about tension between East and West, past and future, the body and the cosmos What fascinates me is how we define humanity when placed in extreme contexts: across cultural boundaries, through deep time, or even against the backdrop of space

The skull is a recurring motif in my work not as a symbol of death, but as a vessel for continuity and reflection It represents a cyclical worldview where the spiritual and the physical eventually reunite. In that sense, the skull is not the end of life but the beginning of a deeper human question: Who are we, when stripped of identity, culture, and even flesh?

Through this lens, my art becomes less about where we come from and more about what endures what remains, even as everything else transforms

“ TIME CAN BEND TRADITION CAN TRANSFORM IDENTITY IS SOMETHING WE CAN BUILD NOT JUST INHERIT”
Bitcoin - Buddha, Venus and Guan Yu, Jacky Tsai, NFT, 2022, minted on 18 October 2022, 1-of-1, a unique programmable digital art at 4k
Mahjong Game, Robotic Beauty, Arm Wrestling - Round 3 all by Jacky Tsai, Hand-painted blue and white porcelain

Ultimately, what does your art mean to you personally, philosophically, or existentially? What message or legacy would you most wish to leave behind?

For me, art is not about answers it’s about constructing new dimensions for questions to live in.

Personally, it has been my way of navigating the in-between: between cultures, identities, and eras. Philosophically, it is how I process the complexity of being human in a fractured, accelerating world Art gives me the freedom to reconcile contradictions without forcing resolution to hold beauty and absurdity, humour and decay, in the same frame

What I hope to leave behind is not a fixed message but a system of symbols, ideas, and images that continue to evolve beyond me I want people to look at my work and feel that time can bend, that tradition can transform, and that identity is something we can build not just inherit

If there is a legacy, let it be this: That art can be both deeply rooted and radically free.

“ART CAN BE BOTH DEEPLY ROOTED AND RADICALLY FREE”

Away from the tumult of the current, it shelters an intimate cove, the origins of the energy and soul of the city Hôtel La Ponche, a secluded haven. In 1938, Hôtel La Ponche was a quaint, unassuming establishment managed by Simone Duckstein's parents, who embodied the essence and nostalgia of the venue From the pontoon, individuals arrived in modest boats when La Ponche was merely a humble fishermen's bar In the 1950s, the stars emerged effortlessly For its naked finesse and luminous whim, they arrived aboard the illustrious

Blue Train, which gently deposited them onto the platforms of Saint-Raphael station. They came to Saint-Tropez, drawn by what they described as a “small paradise.” Since then, the hotel has assembled an illustrious array of artists, writers, and filmmakers who have gathered to revel in this boundless well of creativity and levity that is La Ponche To compose To love It is there that the art of living on the Riviera was born

Published in 1986, The Garden of Eden unveils Hemingway at his most daring. The American writer David Bourne and his bewitching wife Catherine set off on a honeymoon that swiftly descends into chaos As Catherine’s hair becomes increasingly abbreviated, her inclinations stretch into perilous territories. She ensnares David in a labyrinth of jealousy, gender games, and a torrid entanglement with Marita, a sultry third wheel. As Provençal pines whisper secrets, Catherine torches David’s precious “stories,” leaving only her own narrative intact Their Riviera idyll sours into a psychological duel, with Catherine plotting to turn David’s life and art into her own creation This is Hemingway’s Côte d’Azur: a place of sunlit decay, where love tangles with ambition, and identity is as fluid as the Mediterranean tides.

The Great Gatsby

Author: F. Scott Fitzgerald Genres: Romance novel

Juliette weaves through a complex landscape of desire: she is drawn to the appealing Antoine yet chooses to wed his steadier brother, Michel. The fervour and controversy surround a young woman who is both innocent and provocative; she challenges societal norms by wielding her femininity as both a weapon and a defence. Immersed in the sunlit scenes of St. Tropez, the story is a potent blend of desire and heartbreak, infused with a compelling longing and sorrow that transcends time, transforming Juliette into a lasting symbol of feminine freedom and defiance.

Happiness in intelligent people is the rarest thing I know.

Set against the dazzling backdrop of 1920s Long Island, The Great Gatsby is F Scott Fitzgerald’s masterful exploration of illusion, ambition, and the disintegration of the American Dream Narrated by the introspective Nick Carraway, the novel unravels the enigmatic life of Jay Gatsby a wealthy, self-made man whose opulent lifestyle conceals a singular obsession: to reclaim a lost love, Daisy Buchanan As Gatsby’s dream collides with the rigid realities of

Rooted in nature’s quiet rhythms, Mockeviciute creates sculptural, timeless pieces attuned to life’s natural pace. The collection A Season Unnamed draws from inner and outer seasons–reflecting movement, solitude, growth, and reconnection Through hand-carved wooden elements, hand-dyed fabrics, and intentional colours and forms, each piece becomes a fragment of a larger emotional and environmental journey. Mockeviciute honours process, craftsmanship, and quiet transformation–a reminder that, like nature, we unfold in our own time.

Aninterviewwithfineart photographerGabrielIsak

Surrealism emerged as a captivating art and cultural movement in Europe following the tumult of World War I, where artists sought to liberate the unconscious mind, allowing it to manifest in its most unrestrained form.

Today, we witness a remarkable resurgence following a global surge in elevated consciousness, and Gabriel Isak articulates his manifesto with clarity.

Take us back to your childhood. Was there a moment when you first felt the pull toward creativity?

Photography is such a powerful medium. What was it about the camera that felt like home to you?

When I was a teenager, I received a small HP point-andshoot camera from my dad. From there, I began to document the external world around me, and soon enough, the internal world Photography gave me the tool to explore my emotions and what I was going through in images, almost like therapy Soon enough I began to face depression and turned to photography to explore and express my state of mind The depression grew very intense, and I stopped taking photos for

many years I lost the passion for everything due to depression After battling melancholy for seven years, I rediscovered camerawork and decided to pursue it professionally in 2014 At the time, I was going to the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, obtaining my BFA in photography, and graduating in December 2016 Since then, it has been a tool I've used to capture the interior and exterior worlds we live in, with an emphasis on themes including surrealism, mental health, and man's journey through life. I now live in Stockholm, Sweden, from where I work on my art

Photography by Gabriel Isak

TheInnerWorld, Captured. CraftingaVision.

Your work carries an almost dreamlike stillness, often exploring solitude and the subconscious. How personal are these themes? There’s a quiet language in your visuals recurring silhouettes, the ocean, the faceless figures. How would you elaborate on this artistic meditation, and what do these symbols mean to you?

Indeed, it all stems from personal experience; yet, the process of creating my work serves as a form of meditation Upon resuming my photography journey after a seven-year hiatus and enrolling in school for photography, I began to explore the kinds of images that now define my work. I soon began to recognize that all the images I was capturing were a reflection, a manifestation of the years I lived in the blue arms of depression, and this realization unfolded entirely without my conscious awareness I decided to continue my journey along this road, and today photography has become a tool I use to delve into human experiences such as depression. It allows me to illuminate the complexities of mental health and illness, aiming to foster awareness and dismantle the stigma that often accompanies these topics The silhouettes embody the essence of the individual the soul, the person The ocean represents the unknown, the serene, the blue world of melancholy, a realm of feelings (for example, drowning in one's emotions). The water symbolizes my connection to home and my Scandinavian heritage, as I grew up by the water Ultimately, I perceive the ocean as an enigmatic and surreal place another world that I find fascinating yet at the same time frightening The faceless figures in my creations are utilized to convey the theme of each image so that there is no face to distract from the story. This approach allows the viewer to immerse themselves in the story and draw parallels to their own experiences their own stories

My photography is very planned in advance, as I like to have as much control as possible over the shoot. I begin by conceptualizing the idea through research and brainstorming Then I decide on clothes, props, location, model, and equipment and finalize the idea with a sketch Thereafter, I start to produce the shoot and end the process in post-processing, where the image becomes finalized My favorite moment is looking at the final image, comparing it to my original sketch, and feeling the joy of bringing it into existence I scout for a surreal setting that aligns with the essence of the image I aim to craft; this strategy applies equally to the subject, be it an abstract silhouette that evokes a soul or a figure adorned with hair or symbols that obscure their identity Following that, I organize my travels to the destination where I intend to create the image, be it in Scandinavia, Europe, or America

ATapestryofInfluence.

What artists, movements, or moments would reveal themselves if we could glimpse into your mind? Who do you believe has influenced your work the most?

Surrealism has significantly influenced my work, providing the freedom and the space to craft the surreal world I envision, tapping into art that is dreamy, mysterious, psychological, emotional, graphic, and minimal in its aesthetic This movement felt instinctive as I started my work, likely due to my desire to capture the profound blues in minimal landscapes which compels me to create exclusively at dusk or dawn, or on overcast days that transform the landscape into a surreal playground for photography I have also been inspired by Scandinavian melancholy art and many paintings from many different masters, exploring the abstract silhouettes, which led me to study similar themes in photography Occasionally, I come across fragments from films, songs, or literature that ignite inspiration for my own work. For example, Carl Jung's concept of 'The Shadow Self' influenced my series 'The Shadow and the Self '

ArtasSolace.

You’ve cited photography as a form of healing What do you believe your work whispers to those facing their own silent battles?

Photography has served as a lens through which I navigate the myriad experiences life presents, transforming into a therapeutic instrument that aids in the processing of my journey and fosters a deeper understanding in retrospect. When depression resurfaced in my life, it has assisted me in overcoming it That is why the primary objective of my work is to shine light on mental health and human experiences that we combat in today’s society but also to have the spectator interact with the subjects and their internal world that

are portrayed in my imagery, which in turn will allow the spectator to reflect on their journey in life If I would give any message, it would be that art and, most and foremost, photography saved me many times in my life, and my work is to inspire others to do the same when they are struggling in silence To express ourselves creatively in any medium is immensely healing and can help to get out of the blue and into the light

“To express ourselves creatively in any medium is immensely healing and can help to get out of the blue and into the light.”

TheViewer’sGaze.

Art is a dialogue between the creator and the observer. Which encounters via your art moved you?

It is always fascinating to witness the varied responses individuals have to the same art piece I have created or my work in general Some get profoundly emotional; some feel that the image really makes them feel seen and understood over an experience they have had; and for some, it becomes immensely overwhelming My aim when presenting my work to an audience is to encourage viewers to engage with the figures depicted and delve into their own inner landscapes.

My pieces are loaded with a mysterious, serene energy that makes one feel peaceful or makes one daydream, reflect back on memories/events in their own life, reviving them back to life I have received numerous letters about how my art has helped people, particularly those suffering from depression, and how what I've created in front of them makes them feel understood and soothed One message that stuck with me came from a cancer patient who wrote to say that my work was a constant source of inspiration and motivation during their toughest times Acknowledging the impact of my art, that it helped even the tiniest degree, was quite overwhelming to hear… that message has stuck with me to this day.

TheRoadAhead.

What do you foresee as the destination of your artistic odyssey? Are there any upcoming ventures or collaborations that appear particularly exhilarating to you?

I see myself exhibiting more on a global scale, creating books about my art, and delivering discussions at universities and conventions on the power of photography in the world of mental health and mental illness, all while continuing to raise awareness and dismantle stigma through this medium I aspire to journey to remarkable places around the globe to cultivate my ideas, all the while anticipating the intriguing technological advancements that will transform the field of photography accordingly

THE TEMPLE OF GONGKAN

Kantapon Metheekul professionally recognized as Gongkan, is a Bangkok-born artist whose practice is situated at the intersection of visual culture, metaphysical inquiry and urban semiotics

Trained in art and design at Silpakorn University he later pursued fine art in New York, concentrating on painting while simultaneously immersing himself in the city's street art milieu. During this period, he initiated a body of work centered on the concept of teleportation employing the motif of literal black holes” as metaphors for transdimensional movement existential transition and the dissolution of spatial boundaries. His street-based interventions often in the form of sticker art, gained traction within New York’s creative subcultures, positioning him as a diasporic interlocutor navigating between East and West. Upon his return to Thailand, Gongkan continued to develop this lexicon of symbolic mobility and ontological transformation His stylized, dreamlike visual language characterized by cartoon-inflected surrealism and thematics of metamorphosis has resonated widely, attracting a broad public following as well as recognition within critical and curatorial circles His work not only challenges the stability of spatial and cultural identities but also invites reflection on the permeability of physical and psychological frontiers in an era of accelerated global flux

How do you see your art? Is it a means of escape, confrontation, transformation, or perhaps a concealed truth?

Personally, my art is like an ideal world a version of reality I wish existed A place where people see things the way I hope they could, where values like equality and happiness are embraced My art reflects what I want the world to understand It’s a way of telling the stories I’ve encountered and tracing my growth It captures diverse cultures and moments that spark internal questions about society and about the norms we often accept without question. Sometimes, my works ignite conversations that ask whether something is truly right or whether it should really be that way

Is there a recurring symbol or motif in your work that carries personal significance?

Portals are a recurring motif in my work They’ve become my signature symbol, transforming ordinary scenes into something surreal and unfamiliar This oval form continues to evolve in both appearance and meaning It gestures toward other dimensions, acting as a voice for themes that are often overlooked At times, it may feel misplaced, strange, or dreamlike. But within that surreal context, new encounters and conversations emerge

Non-Traditional Recipe, Gongkan, Acrylic on canvas, 2025

In a world increasingly dominated by materialism and technology, what role do you believe your art plays today?

I think my art shows what it’s like to live in this time It is indeed the era of capitalism and technology. If someone looks at my work in the future, maybe they’ll understand what we were going through and how it shaped us Art can point things out, invite people to reflect, or revisit what lies within For me, it’s about revealing a certain side of myself for others to perceive and rethink Technology and capitalism have their upsides, but in another sense, they can be harmful to people. Art serves to explore multiple perspectives, opening up dialogues and offering space for different viewpoints

How do contemporary global or cultural issues reflect on canvas for you? Can you recall a time when creating art changed perspective on anything fundamental?

It is when I create artworks that reflect the issue of equality, especially as someone who is LGBTQ+ Even though the world is more open now, there are still people, like those from my mom’s generation or those whose acceptance I hope for, who might not fully accept it My art becomes a voice for what I want society to understand and embrace I was raised in a Chinese family and spent four years in New York in my twenties These experiences brought a mix of cultures into my life sometimes they blended, sometimes they clashed. That tension often appears in my work It speaks to coexistence, freedom, and the act of bringing contrasting ideas into a shared space It also encourages us to try harder to understand one another and asks whether we can truly live together peacefully despite our differences Some traditional beliefs may no longer align with today’s world. Whether it’s the rejection of LGBTQ+ identities within families or religious exclusivity, these are ideas I revisit in my work

..experiences brought a mix of cultures into my life—sometimes they blended, sometimes they clashed.”
Goodness Has to Be Divided?, Gongkan, Acrylic on canvas, 2025 Showcased at Hong Kong’s 當

WITHIN THAT SURREAL CONTEXT, NEW ENCOUNTERS AND CONVERSATIONS EMERGE. -GONGKAN

No Freedom, No Love Gongkan

Do you ever feel taken aback by what you see on the canvas?

Yes, most of the time, the paintings start from a pencil sketch or just an image in my head. So there are times when I finish a piece and feel surprised It turns out to be even more stunning and impactful than I expected. Actually, I wouldn’t say I’m taken aback maybe proud is a better word. When a work is completed, I can fully appreciate the details, the use of color, the emotion, and the overall mood and tone Some pieces manage to convey a deeper emotional layer than I initially imagined far beyond what the original sketch suggested

If your entire body of work were lost to time, what idea or emotion would you hope people still associate with your name?

I’ve come to accept that nothing lasts forever. But if something of mine could remain, I’d hope people remember the surreal feeling in my work. The sense of struggle within oneself, as well as the fight against societal norms, striving for acceptance.
