THINGS ARE GET TING A LIT TLE S C A RY D O W N I N K E L LO G G PA R K

Don’t look now, but the squatters are back living in Kellogg Park. While they may look a bit scary, don’t fret. The annual invasion of the scarecrows is actually quite welcomed by the community, as their arrival kicks off one of the most wonderful times of the year in Kellogg Park.

In fact, the 100 or so scarecrows now taking up residence in the park are a big draw to town, as residents and nonresidents alike flock downtown to snap pictures of the lovable creations. The cool thing about the scarecrow program, which is organized by the Plymouth Community Chamber of Commerce, is that each one is created by local residents, non-profit organizations and other groups. Each scarecrow is unique and a reflection of the group that built it.

Of course, the scarecrows are just harbingers of a great month in Kellogg Park, which just seems to be the epicenter of life in Plymouth. In addition to the scarecrows, which will be up through Oct. 31, the 10th annual Pumpkin Palooza will take place on Oct. 24, drawing thousands of children for this family-friendly trick-or-treating event that seems to grow in popularity each year. And on Oct. 31, the Wicked Halloween Run, which is billed as the largest Halloween run in Michigan, will take place in the park and surrounding streets. Don’t be surprised to see hundreds of costumed runners making their way through town. It’s quite a sight.

As most of you know, Kellogg Park has been undergoing some renovations this year, which has been causing some inconveniences. Much of the park has been cordoned off as work crews have been doing a major facelift and rebuild of the fountain. The $1.3 million project is being funded by the Wilcox Foundation, a local non-profit that continues to make a lasting impact on the Plymouth community in so many ways.

The foundation, named after longtime Plymouth philanthropist Jack Wilcox, has granted out more than $4.7 million to local projects. We have a story about the Wilcox Foundation this month. Jack Wilcox, who died more than two decades ago, would be proud of the work his foundation has accomplished in the years since his death.

“Jack’s idea was to really be an investor and have his assets invested in the community so they would provide a return, long-term,” said Scott Dodge, a longtime Wilcox family friend and president of the Wilcox Foundation. “His feeling was, there’s a lot of people that want money for a bunch of different things, but it’s all temporary in a way. He wanted to help make things have a lasting impact on the community. That’s what our goal has been through the foundation.”

The weather this year, which has been soggy at times, has caused some delays in the fountain project. But work is just about done. The city is hoping to have a dedication ceremony on Oct. 9. As of press time, it was tentatively scheduled for 11 a.m.

The timing will be perfect, as there is so much going on this month in downtown Plymouth and in Kellogg Park. I’m sure the scarecrows – and all their fans – will be happy about it.

YOU R VOICE Troubling but not unique I was interested to read Kurt Kuban’s opening remarks about the trees in his neighborhood and Supervisor Kurt Heise’s tree ordinance in the July issue. I haven’t personally looked at his neighborhood, but his experience is hardly unique. Among other things, I was troubled by Kuban’s description of the neighbor who had the flooding in his basement. The builder’s code is pretty specific about this kind of thing – what runs off my property will not run onto your property. I would think a lawsuit for damages should be a shoo-in in such a circumstance. As well, it would get the attention of some of the more bareknuckled developers who are, or should be, aware of the code.

When the new Plymouth Township building was built near Haggerty and Ann Arbor Road, drainage was high on the list of things that the architects and engineers had to address. As I understand it, none of the storm water may run off that property.

None of this, of course, addresses the psychic and aesthetic damage of losing large trees in your environment whether they are counted as heritage trees or not.

I applaud Supervisor Heise’s attempt to protect heritage trees and trust that it can be used to good effect.

Developers need a conscience I read Kurt Kuban’s editorial in the July issue of The Rock and had a strong reaction. I've lived here for the past six years. I am quite sure I know the street Kuban is referring to. When my husband and I were looking for a home to purchase in this area, we considered one on that street. I had the same reaction: "It truly did feel like the country in the city." I grew up on property sandwiched in the middle of Brighton State Recreation Area.

The street here reminded me of where I grew up and learned to love nature. It

reminded me of home. I was so excited that something like this could exist in a suburban community.

A few years later, when the property you mentioned was sold and the clear-cutting happened, I was so glad we hadn't chosen to live there, because I certainly would have been depressed. I couldn't even bring myself to go down that street for months afterward. I felt angered that developers can just come in and destroy the ambiance of a neighborhood, just because they have the money to do so. They clearly don't care about the community.

People chose to live on that street, I'm sure, because of its uniqueness and beauty.

Other people may not want that kind of lifestyle. That's fine. But there are plenty of housing developments in this area for people who prefer gentrified living. Why would someone come in and make such a unique community look like every other community in this area? Especially when there are so few "country in the city" streets left around here. —Sandy Belz

We need ‘human awakening’ Clear cutting is an ugly and unhealthy process which damages our environment, including the wildlife which we are responsible for. When humans disregard the importance of trees, especially those of greater age and size, a huge problem is created. Unfortunately, there are those humans that are spiritually asleep and only care about making the money, as quick and easy as possible. How disgusting.

It is time for a huge human awakening to create a healthier earth and society.

Nothing to do with it First off, I love The Rock magazine and look forward to every issue!

I have one comment, however, regarding the article about the tree ordinance. I am a very proud "Trump supporter"--love our country and our wonderful city of Plymouth. I also am very grateful to Plymouth Township Supervisor Kurt Heise and what he did to

have this ordinance passed.

One has absolutely nothing to do with the other. If people were against the ordinance, it had nothing to do with being a Trump supporter.

Preserve what is left I am thrilled someone is trying to preserve what few trees we have in Plymouth. We purchased a home five years ago in a location with many trees in a subdivision. Our neighbor cut down five mature trees, which ruined the look of the street and certainly decreased the property value. The only reason for cutting the trees was his grass wasn’t growing well with the shade. I’m tired of people saying it’s their property and their right. It’s disgusting to be so selfish.

Since moving in we have planted 12 trees to replace any that might get diseased or damaged. —Lisa Mitchell

Importance of trees I read your article regarding cutting down trees in Plymouth. I am so glad to see that someone is finally doing something to protect the trees. It breaks my heart and I cry every time I see a beautiful old tree being cut down. Don't people realize the importance of trees to our environment and ecology not to mention the beauty? ith the new academic year underway, Plymouth-Canton Community Schools has an eye toward the future. The district continues its quest to stay on the cutting edge of technology with augmented reality, virtual reality and artificial intelligence opportunities for students.

“We are proud of building a culture of innovation so we can meet the needs of students to get them to high school graduation and beyond,” says Beth Rayl, Chief Academic Officer for P-CCS.

A NEW HUB P-CCS has a long tradition of stressing STEAM throughout the K-12 curriculum. Its Lightning Robotics team is nationally competitive every year, and won the FIRST Robotics World 6

Championship in 2017. Students have dabbled with VR in Career and Technical Education programs at the PlymouthCanton Education Park, using Oculus Rift headsets and highend desktop computers.

The 2020 Bond, overwhelmingly approved by voters, will allow the district to expand its focus on technology even more.

According to Rayl, the bond will cover construction of a $3.1 million Innovation Hub at P-CEP on Canton Center Road in Canton. The collaborative space will be a large, open room with flexible furniture and equipment that can be moved around to meet a variety of needs. All teachers in the district will be welcome to utilize the space.

“It will be a large white box scenario you can change at

various times for various uses to allow for innovative practices to happen,” Rayl says.

It will feature a large robotics field and be inspired in part by haptics labs, which incorporate technologies such as vibrating game controllers that users experience through their sense of touch.

EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES As the district draws up plans for the Innovation Hub, officials are building up the technology and anticipation needed to make it a success.

Until now, VR technology has been costly and cumbersome for the district to implement, but the Oculus Rift Quest is a gamechanger for schools, Rayl says.

The all-in-one units offer more portability at a lower price point.

P-CCS recently purchased 16 of these VR headsets and ran a

pilot program over the summer to introduce them to students.

The two-week AR, VR, AI Explorations Camp invited incoming 9th-12th graders to learn about emerging technologies, and explore AR and VR apps, programs and resources that allowed them to virtually walk on other planets, swim with sharks, hold a beating human heart, and travel with dinosaurs.

Response was overwhelming, says Rayl, who led the course.

“These technologies are vehicles to help students unlock content. Abstract skills are challenging for some learners to grasp, but if we put them into a virtual environment so they can actually experience something that’s as close to the real world as possible, and they can manipulate things hands-on, it makes it real for students,” Rayl says.

P-CCS is so far ahead of the curve, technology itself is still catching up. There aren’t a lot of educational VR, AR or AI games and experiences available yet, but P-CCS is collaborating and brainstorming with Great Lakes Reality Labs in Lansing, the only haptics lab in the nation primarily designed for educational purposes.

P-CCS also is involved in the statewide Virtual Reality Learning Initiative (VIRLI), a

harness that engagement and translate it into successful learning outcomes.

“We see passion for this in kids, and that’s important. This is an area that kids are into,” he says. “All of this just makes sense for our school district.”

Rayl envisions VR eventually ushering students through the human body, onto construction sites, or even into space, experiences otherwise impossible to offer.

“In many ways this is in its initial phases,” Rayl says. “There are a number of folks having additional discussions about how you merge this technology and education together.”

Rayl has high hopes for the future of VR, AR and AI as a way to help students who are struggling and accelerate kids who are advanced.

“The deeper ‘why’ is to make the curriculum come alive for them,” she says.

Ultimately, Rayl envisions students not only consuming content, but creating it. The summer camp was a way to survey kids, gauge their interest,

‘YOU NEVER FORGET’ First responders come together to honor 9/11 victims on 20th anniversary

odi Ring of Plymouth knows 20 years will never be enough time to completely erase the pain associated with those horrific events of Sept. 11, 2001.

The teacher of 31 years lost one of her students on that fateful day when two planes flew into the World Trade Center. Meredith Whelan, 23, of Canton was one of 42 people with Michigan ties to perish in the worst terrorist attack on American soil.

Whelan was working on the 93rd floor in the north tower as an equity firm research associate when the first hijacked plane hit, according to news reports. Ring

had the 1996 Plymouth Salem High graduate as a student at West Middle School.

“You never forget,” said Ring, who joined others at the First Responders Memorial on Haggerty Road and Edward Hines Drive Sept. 11 to mark the 20th anniversary of those dreadful events, which claimed 2,977 lives and injured more than 6,000 others.

Patrick Anderson, who was also at the World Trade Center when the planes hit, spoke not only about the need to remember those lost on that horrendous day but how those awful events galvanized people in this country

in an unprecedented way.

Anderson served as keynote speaker for the remembrance event. The owner of Anderson Economic Group is co-founder of the East Lansing nonprofit Michigan Remembers 9/11 whose mission is to ensure the memory of those 42 with links to the Great Lakes state never fades.

The Michigan Remembers 9/11 website recognizes the men and women who died in the attacks, ranging 22-60 in age. The fund pays tribute to those with Michigan roots, regardless of address at the time of their death.

Anderson escaped from his hotel room on the 39th floor in

one of the World Trade Center towers as the mayhem unfolded Sept. 11, 2001.

“Yes, I was an eyewitness to tragedy, but I was an eyewitness to so much more,” said Anderson, whose appearance was arranged

by Plymouth Township Supervisor Kurt Heise and Oakland County Circuit Court Judge Michael Warren, who has spearheaded Patriot Week activities.

“We were all witnesses at that time to a great outpouring of patriotism. Even as we mourned, we Americans rose up, we volunteered to defend our country here and in far away nations. We worked to

Anderson spoke against the backdrop of a memorial on the northwest corner of Haggerty and

during the solemn occasion.

The Plymouth Police Honor Guard, which is composed of members from both city and township departments, presented the colors. A bagpiper played “Amazing Grace” as a wreath was placed at the memorial.

Ivywood Classical Academy students led those in the Pledge of Allegiance while Esther Kaufmann sang the national anthem.

the (P-CCS) website,” Brandon said. “In terms of physical distancing, (a space of) three feet or greater will be maintained to the extent possible at each school and at all risk levels.”

The district also is continuing its P-CCS Virtual Academy, to provide an educational option for kids and families not comfortable yet about in-person learning.

Several hundred students have signed up for the 2021-22 Virtual Academy, Brandon noted.

Students in the academy receive live online instruction, via Zoom, live discussion boards or other real-time venues. They are eligible to participate in marching band, athletics and other extracurricular activities as long as they meet eligibility requirements.

BUS DRIVER SHORTAGE Merritt underscored another area of concern as the 2021-22 school year opens – a severe shortage of bus drivers. The

district also has openings in other departments.

The issue was amplified in a Sept. 4 letter to students and families, listing nine routes as not having a bus driver and thus being temporarily shut down until positions are filled.

Durham School Services, which partners with the district, is offering a $1,000 signing bonus for bus drivers who possess a CDL license. For those without such credentials, $500 is being offered.

There were 93 bus drivers to start the year, but 105 is the desired amount to fulfill all current routes.

“I ask for patience as I talked about these open positions with buses,” Merritt said during the meeting. “They are working around the clock to get these positions filled, but we know it might be a rocky start.”

Merritt said those with interest in applying can go to the district website (pccsk12.com) and go to the human resources tab.

Art at the Crossroads

DIA’s new downtown sculpture inspired by all things Plymouth

T

he meaning of life – and art – is different for each person. And with that premise, world-class artist Vito Valdez embarked on a two-year journey that now is fully blooming with the midSeptember unveiling of his “City at the Crossroads” sculpture in downtown Plymouth.

The detailed and vibrant ceramic puzzle celebrating Plymouth’s rich history is located along Ann Arbor Trail just east of Kellogg Park, mere steps from the gates to the historic Wilcox House.

After working on the sculpture for several months, Valdez and his team finally unveiled it to the public on Sept. 17.

Original BBs and three different sizes of bricks from Plymouth’s Daisy Air Rifle Company, not to mention wooden ties and pieces of coal and iron ore snagged from the city’s omnipresent railroad tracks, are 16

just a few of the elements which have been assembled to form a wondrous visual quilt which undeniably shouts “this is what Plymouth’s about.”

“Just to start off, I can tell you the bricks right there are from the Daisy BB gun factory,” mused Valdez, lead artist for the Detroit Institute of Art’s Partners in Public Art program.

“That’s an important component, especially the fact it’s from ground level, just the way they were originally.”

Other eye-catching elements include images depicting car, train, fox, fish, tree and a flowing Rouge River. Each carries significance about Plymouth’s history.

“I paid homage to the car designers,” Valdez added. “And the German Shepherd speaks of faithfulness, on guard, protecting. Symbolic of a nod to our police force.”

Valdez stepped back to take a glance at the finished project, which is perfectly placed in front of the Wilcox House, a direct visual line some 40 yards away from the soon-to-be-completed fountain in Kellogg Park.

EDUCATIONAL TREASURE TROVE “Everything that all the materials from the bricks and rocks to actual structural things – like the trellis – are reminiscent of our railroad tracks here in Plymouth,” said Lisa Howard, Plymouth Community Arts Council executive director, which partnered with the DIA and Plymouth Downtown Development Authority on

the project. “There are native animals depicted on the sculpture…there are native peoples, native rocks, native animals and all the way through to modern culture.”

The finished sculpture stayed true to Valdez’ original drawings, which were created following a host of community input surveys, in partnership with the PCAC and DDA. It rises up from its brick and cement foundation. On all sides are numerous, handmade high is a copper urn, created by fire stoneware ceramic tiles which Valdez and Koth and a metal include a carved stone fish and trellis depicting the hood of a 1930s-era Plymouth automobile.

Sprouting through the center of that urn is a fully flowering vine, which gives the work an evergreen aspect. The living vine extends up from several feet below the surface.

“It will bloom, so you have rebirth and renewal,” Valdez emphasized.

Surrounding the base is a circular wrought-iron fence manufactured by Disenos Ornamental Metalwork of Detroit, identical to the fencing around the adjacent Wilcox House. Funding for the fence, which cost about $7,000 to ceramic tiles depicting leaves produce, was donated by the emblematic of those which fall Wilcox Foundation, Howard said. from Plymouth trees each autumn.

That special touch wasn’t by Perfectly topping the sculpture accident.

“Because it (that style of fence) was in front of The Wilcox House, I wanted to pull elements from the fencing and the gates,” Howard said. “The goal of the DIA was for it to be a true community partnership. I just think it was a beautiful element to add.”

The Plymouth Garden Club also chipped in with a softscape of plants and flowers, beautifully placed between the fence and sculpture.

Valdez did his homework before first putting pencil to paper. He visited the Plymouth

Historical Museum and talked to those with deep knowledge about the city.

“They have a display at the historical museum that depicts a lot of the things that were in the (Daisy) factory,” Howard said.

“One of the things is the original floor which has BBs in it, just layers and layers. The BBs would get pressed into the soft floor, by people’s feet.”

PLACE TO RELAX Valdez found out first-hand about just how much people are fascinated with Plymouth’s past, just by interacting with those who often stopped by the work site over the past many months.

“As I was working here, the public, longtime residents would come and talk to me about everything under the sun,” he said. “And bring me things, too.

Some of them actually gave me little artifacts that I included, part of the history.”

And with the arrival of “City at the Crossroads,” it is hoped that it will help people realize why artists such as Valdez put their all into community art endeavors.

“The DIA has a whole mission with this project,” Howard stressed. “They chose cities to do these community partnershippublic art projects with to bring awareness to public art. It was quite a compliment to get chosen by the DIA, because they invested in our city. They paid for

this, they paid for the sculpture and the materials and the time.

We are very proud of that.”

Charles T. Garling, director of studio programs for DIA, said the sculpture cost an estimated $20,000 with that total “generously funded by community investment in the tri-county millage” which is administered by the Wayne County Art Institute Authority.

Meanwhile, Valdez is hopeful the sculpture will bring more than artistic enjoyment to those who see it.

“Slow down, take a look around, where are you?” Valdez said. “Where’s your place on the planet and what brings you joy? Because there’s so much confusion, division. Our country, the world, is at a place like we’ve never known (in modern society).

“I think public art is linked to our past, looking at the future.

And, it also gives out positivity.

Positive energy can bounce off and it can come back to you.”

Planting the Seeds of Prosperity Wilcox Foundation’s generosity ripples through Plymouth community

F

or decades, The Wilcox Foundation has followed the blueprint established by namesake Jack Wilcox – namely planting “seed money” that yields growth and prosperity for citizens and businesses in the greater Plymouth community.

More than 21 years after Johnston Hill (“Jack”) Wilcox’ June 2000 death, the nonprofit organization’s wheel of fortune keeps spinning with approximately $4.7 million in grants awarded to worthy Plymouth projects and people.

“Jack’s idea was to really be an investor and have his assets invested in the community so they would provide a return, long-term,” said Scott Dodge, a longtime Wilcox family friend and president of The Wilcox Foundation. “His feeling was, there’s a lot of people that want

money for a bunch of different things, but it’s all temporary in a way.

“He wanted to help make things have a lasting impact on the community. That’s what our goal has been through the foundation, try to do that. He would give people seed money.”

The foundation – which today is helmed by board members Dodge, Win Schrader and Dan Herriman – continues to pump money and energy into projects that benefit the community and further strengthens the Wilcox legacy.

The foundation has stepped up in a big way with a couple current projects that will benefit the community for years to come.

The first is the reconstruction of the Wilcox Fountain at Kellogg Park (with a tab of about $1.3 million). They are also funding

the restoration of the historic community theater at the original Plymouth High School where Wilcox and Dodge attended.

The latter project, with an estimated $1.1 million cost, at the current Plymouth Arts & Recreation Complex (PARC) will soon be completed, after which music lovers will step into the 300-seat Jack Wilcox Theater.

“Their generosity has really helped this community thrive,” said Gail Grieger, PARC executive director. “We’ve been amazingly fortunate to benefit from them, and we really, really appreciate the foundation and Jack’s vision for what he wanted the Plymouth community to be.”

According to Grieger, a “soft opening” in mid-November is currently being discussed.

Whenever it happens, penciled in to perform is the Michigan

Philharmonic, which also has its offices and rehearsal space at PARC. “Jack went to high school there (he graduated in 1935), Jack’s mom graduated there and my mom was in her class (1928),” Dodge said. “We just felt preserving the high school was something we were really interested in. Jack would prefer to have buildings preserved rather than have them knocked The Rock

down and condos put in their place. We were glad to be a part of helping with that.

“In the 1950s he (Wilcox) was a charter member of the Plymouth Players, a theater group. So we thought this was perfect, that it would give the Wilcox family some legacy, a permanent facility in the city.”

SECOND ACT Grieger said the Jack Wilcox Theater will take older residents back to their youth while helping younger people get their own glimpse at classic architecture.

“We’re keeping everything,” Grieger said. “We have all the original plaster work, the columns, the plaster proscenium arch that goes above the stage.

We kept the original stage, but we extended it. And it’s going to have a new stage floor on it, but it’s still there. And the original exposed brick work that would have been on the walls we’re also going to preserve all of that.

“It will be really wonderful to have some of his classmates and other alumni, when the school was Plymouth High School, to come back and see it the way they remembered it. I just did a tour for 10 members of the Class of 1959 and they were blown away.”

The Wilcox Fountain is another high-profile project, now taking shape in the center of Kellogg Park – where music lovers also attend the Wilcox Wednesday Concert Series (sponsored by the Wilcox Foundation).

“Kellogg Park is a key asset of the city and this is the gem of the park,” said Dodge, about the fountain. “So it’s going to provide value beyond cost for years into the future.”

The fountain – which has been screened from view by sheer black-out fencing while work continues – is on target to be completed and unveiled this October. Installation of granite began in mid-September.

with the adjacent Wilcox House – as well as the newly unveiled “City at the Crossroads” sculpture located on a strip of public property along Ann Arbor Trail in front of the stately mansion where Jack Wilcox called home throughout his 83-year life.

The Wilcox Foundation donated about $7,000 for the wrought iron fence which surrounds the sculpture, the latter created in a partnership between the Detroit Institute of Arts, Plymouth Community Arts Council and the city’s Downtown Development Authority.

“With the proximity there, we thought it would be nice to be a part of it,” Dodge said. “So that’s why we made the grant for the fencing. I understand it was to incorporate various phases, aspects of the history of Plymouth. I think it would be quite a good conversation piece.”

The sculpture itself cost an estimated $20,000 and was funded by the DIA with support of the Wayne County Art Institute Authority.

A CHANCE TO LEARN

In addition to those more obvious Wilcox Foundation contributions to making Plymouth a better place are several other under-the-radar endeavors. For example, it continues to provide funding for the Plymouth Community Art Council’s Music in the Park concert program at Kellogg Park

(dubbed Wilcox Wednesdays).

“We’re going to set up a fund with the Arts Council, for example, that is going to fund those (Wilcox Wednesdays) concerts in the park on into the future,” Dodge said.

The foundation also supports YMCA youth volunteers, furnishes vans to help senior citizens make trips to the grocery store, pharmacy or doctor’s appointments and through its Jack Wilcox Essay Contest program continues to help high school seniors get a financial leg

up on college tuition costs.

The latter program has been in place for a number of years, with more than $500,000 in scholarships written directly to colleges on behalf of the selected students.

Dodge added that it was Wilcox’ stance that students who rolled up their sleeves to learn about Plymouth would be better prepared to write their essays.

Some years spark as many as 30 entries. For the most recent contest, 12 seniors wrote essays comparing the effects of the 1918 flu pandemic with the 2020-21 COVID-19 pandemic.

“Jack always wanted the Plymouth youth to learn about their city, their hometown, and know about the history of Plymouth and all,” Dodge emphasized. “So, what we came up with as the foundation, we felt if the kids would write an essay about the history of Plymouth they would learn that way. They’d also be able to go to the museum, the library, and get some hands on these old documents.”

ight in our own backyard, USA Hockey Arena in Plymouth has proven to be an oasis for the most promising young talent in the country.

Since 1999, when the U.S. National Team Development Program first came to Ann Arbor before ultimately moving to Plymouth, it has produced 343 National Hockey League Draft picks including 197 in the first three rounds (eight first rounders overall).

Last year alone, the NTDP Under-18 team had 15 go in the Draft, including three in the first round.

players from a year ago and move them into a challenging schedule for ’21-22 which includes a home date (Oct. 2) against Michigan State University and a road matchup Feb. 2 at Michigan’s Yost Arena.

Meanwhile, last year’s U-18 coach Dan Muse returns to the U-17 squad and will spin out a new two-year cycle of the nation’s elite junior players.

Nightingale is in his second season with the NTDP program after working stints with the Detroit Red Wings and Buffalo Sabres in player development. He grew up in Cheboygan and lives in Canton with his wife Kristin (a Wayne native) and three children.

“I work in a great spot,” Nightingale said. “We’re lucky.”

Nightingale is also lucky to

coach a talented U-18 team – 23 strong – that launched its season in mid-September.

“We got here a couple of weeks ago and you can tell they all committed to having a great summer,” Nightingale said.

“They put on some strength and added some quickness, speed and worked on the skill part of their game. We asked these guys to raise their game in the summer and each of them have done it.”

MICHIGAN TIES The U-18s feature three players with Michigan ties including current Northville residents Tyler Duke, a defenseman committed to Notre Dame, and Cutter Gauthier, a forward headed to Boston College.

Duke’s older brother Dylan, a

fourth-round pick of the Tampa Bay Lightning now playing at Michigan, was a U-18 graduate, while Gauthier had 20 goals and 17 assists for the U-17s.

“Tyler is a mobile defenseman who is very good with the puck and is highly competitive, so I think he’s a guy that gets a lot done,” Nightingale said. “He definitely has skill. He has a lot of will to his game. He’s great, even in practice. He sets the tone how we want to practice.

“Cutter had a great summer and has worked on his game.

He’s a skilled power forward who can really shoot the puck. One of the things we talked about with him was trying to play the game on the inside more to use his size, his strength and skating ability, and he’s shown that in the first couple of weeks.”

Meanwhile, the team’s leading point producer from a year ago with 28 goals and 27 assists is Mount Clemens native Frank Nazar III, a forward who is headed to Michigan.

“Frank had a really good summer and he’s another one who is really competitive,” Nightingale said, “and his skating is elite . . . and trying to impact the game without the puck with his speed. He’s done a really good job with that.”

Another player with Michigan ties is defenseman Hunter Brzustewicz (Washington Township), a Michigan commit who appeared in just three games after suffering a season-ending injury.

Forward Isaac Howard, who had 27 goals and 27 assists a year ago with a team-best plus 18 rating, is another player to watch.

The Hudson, Wis. native is committed to Minnesota-Duluth.

“He’s one of those guys that has a knack to score,” Nightingale said. “He can score from a lot of different areas and a lot of different ways. He’s got

an NHL release and he’s another who is creating more on the inside and each level you go up who have to get better. And he’s worked hard at that part of his game and we’re looking forward to seeing it.”

The goaltenders will be Dylan Silverstein (Calabasas, Calif.), who had a 10-2 record and 3.61 goals against average

Both of those players played up in selected games last year with the U-18 roster. Cooley excelled at the World Junior camp this summer, while Hutson was named to the top defenseman.

Twenty of the team’s 23 players are already committed to NCAA Division I schools.

“I think we want to play smart, fast and hard,”

Other players NHL scouts are extremely high on include forward Logan Cooley (West Mifflin, Pa.), who is going to Notre Dame, along with defenseman Lane Hutson (Barrington, Ill.), who posted a plus 13 and is committed to Boston University.

Nightingale said. “We want you to be smart with and without the puck. You’ve got really good team speed so you want to play fast both offensively and defensively. We also want to get to the hard areas and be hard to play against.”

Nightingale believes if they follow self-monitoring and basic hygiene procedures, then they should be in a good spot for the upcoming season.

So, what were the evaluators looking for when they put together this current U-17 roster, which already features 15 NCAA Division I commits?

“The two things I put high value on is compete level and their ability to process…the way they’re able to take the game and think the game, too,” Muse said.

FACING OFF WITH COVID The other challenge facing Nightingale and the U-18 team is staying clear of COVID-19 issues with all the travel. In addition to

lot of intangibles despite his lack of size.

“He’s got a very high compete level, very good feel for the game, good sense, good stick skills,” Muse said. “He makes a really good first pass. He showed us in the evaluation process he can play in transition situations. He’s really strong. First impression for me he’s a guy who might not always be the biggest guy on the ice, but he pushes hard and plays a lot bigger than he is.”

“So, there are a lot of layers to it.

It’s offensively, it’s defensively, how they react to time and space, situational awareness. There are certain things we look for in terms of me personally – that compete level and that ability to sense and think the game. Those are two really important things for me.”

Also required to making the U-17 NTDP team are the basic elements – skating ability, speed, stick-handling ability, and a shot.

“There are things that you separate that check that box in terms of high skill set and all

these players that come in here are going to have a very, very high skill set,” Muse said. “It’s what separates you from the pack and what makes you special that drive your game and reach those high levels.”

The U-17 roster includes two players from South Lyon in defenseman Zach Schulz, a Wisconsin commit, and goalie Trey Augustine, a Michigan commit.

Both are products of the Detroit Honeybaked 15O program.

“Trey’s a guy I got to see a lot over the last couple of years,” Muse said. “It makes it easier when a guy is just a few miles down the road to be able to watch. He’s very talented. He’s very driven. He’s shown us that, too. He’s got a very strong drive to succeed to get better and extremely coachable. Everything we’ve done so far, he’s done a great job.

“Schulz is a big, strong kid, he moves well. He checks those boxes in terms of skill set. We really like his compete level.

We feel like he has a good feel for the game. He’s a big body who plays the game hard. He’s shown he’s paid attention to detail. He’s a guy who showed us during the evaluation process and has continued to show since he’s gotten here that he’s very coachable, has a very strong drive and a strong work ethic.”

At 5 feet, 6 inches and weighing only 138 pounds, Bloomfield’s Kai Janviriya arrived from the Detroit Compuware 15O program.

‘Long Overdue’ Relief In Sight Arbor Hills landfill reaches settlement with EPA, state

he foul smell drifting into Northville and Plymouth townships from the Arbor Hills Landfill isn’t going to dissipate anytime soon. But residents at least can plan ahead on when they can breathe easier following the $750,000 settlement of a federal lawsuit against the landfill’s operator.

Arbor Hills Energy LCC agreed to significantly reduce, if not eliminate completely, odor-causing dioxide emissions in its September agreement with the United States Department of Justice, U.S. Environmental 28

Protection Agency and the state of Michigan.

The operator agreed to pay two $375,000 fines – one to the EPA and the other to Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE).

According to the agreement, Arbor Hills Energy will either construct a renewable gas facility or install a sulfur treatment system at the Salem Township facility by March 2023. Either of those options will bring the landfill into compliance with the Clean Air Act and mitigate past excess sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions, the EPA said.

The charges against Arbor Hills Energy were filed in 2016 by the federal EPA and from 2016-2020 by EGLE. But noxious odors emanating from the landfill have bothered area businesses and residents for much longer.

“We are happy these matters are being resolved,” said Mark Abbo, Northville Township supervisor, in a statement. “Our expectation is a clean, healthy environment for our residents and this is a start.

“This action is a long time in the making. We are grateful to the Justice Department, the EPA and the state of Michigan for the

progress made in helping our great community.”

Plymouth Township Supervisor Kurt Heise concurred, applauding those involved at the state and EPA in reaching the settlement.

“Hopefully this will address the longstanding odor issues that people have been complaining about for more than a decade,” Heise said. “And I’m hoping that it will improve the quality of life for both Northville and Plymouth residents.”

In a media statement, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel noted that the settlement

“makes important progress in improving air quality” near the Arbor Hills facility.

Nessel’s office also is still addressing air pollution from the adjacent landfill in a case she filed against Arbor Hills Energy in 2020 on behalf of EGLE. “Combined, when completed, this work will dramatically improve the impact both facilities have had on the surrounding communities.”

The Arbor Hills Landfill is located in Washtenaw County on the west side of Napier and stretching between Five Mile and Six Mile roads, just across the county line from Northville Township and a stone’s throw from the Plymouth Township’s border.

A renewable natural gas facility would convert landfill gas into pipeline-quality natural gas; the sulfur treatment system would achieve a 64 percent reduction in SO2 emissions.

“As far as the sulfur cleanup, I’m not exactly sure what that would involve. And I’m not sure either one of them (options) would really address the odor issue. Odor is generated whenever you have the trucks dumping trash into the landfill, and there are ways of fighting that as well. That literally involves a spray that is applied at the time the trash is being dumped. It’s basically like putting perfume on the trash.”

“Believe me, we get the smell sometimes too, but it’s the truck traffic,” Heise said. “It’s neverending traffic that’s been beating up Five Mile Road for years.”

Heise said he has been in touch with Michigan Rep. Matt Koleszar (D-Plymouth) about directing some of the settlement money toward improving roads in the vicinity.

“I would like to see some of that money go towards the rehabilitation of Five Mile Road, or provide improved traffic enhancements on Beck and Five Mile, or M-14 and Beck,” Heise said. “Anything that we can do to either improve the condition of the road or improve the traffic flow there.”

Heise said another funding avenue worth pursuing is the American Rescue Plan, which President Joe Biden signed into law in March to help families and communities combat economic ravages afflicted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Wayne County is going to receive close to $700 million dollars,” Heise emphasized.

“The state of Michigan is going to receive $5 billion dollars.

And we’d like to get some of that money to rebuild Five Mile from Napier to Beck. To make it more attractive for the economic development that we’re looking to do in that corridor.

“And also to shore it up and make it far more durable over the next 30 years, because I don’t think the landfill is going to close. That truck traffic is going to keep on coming no matter what (lawsuit settlements) are reached.”

Back In Full Swing Community comes out to support fun-filled Fall Festival

A

fter much anticipation, the Plymouth Fall Festival was back in full swing this year and well attended by people from across the region.

Main Street and Ann Arbor Trail were closed down to make room for the fun-filled carnival, which dates back to 1956 when it began as a community family picnic. Back then it was sponsored by the Plymouth Rotary Club, with the intent of bringing people to downtown Plymouth. More than a half century later, it is apparent their goal has been fulfilled as the festival was busy all three days, Sept. 10-12.

Plymouth City Manager and Rotarian Paul Sincock said it was encouraging to see so many people come out and enjoy the festival, but also support the various community organizations that held fundraising activities.

“The Fall Festival was able to return to its roots as a community festival this year,” Sincock said. “Crowds were consistent throughout the weekend and the major events like the Bingo, Kiwanis Pancake

Breakfast and Rotary Chicken Dinner all did extremely well. In fact, the Rotary Chicken Dinner sold out and is anticipated to raise upwards of $50,000 for community and world community projects.

“The art and crafts show and the car shows were also big draws to the festival this year and, of course, the carnival rides were a huge hit with kids of all ages,” Sincock said.

Sandy Szuba, of Northville Township, came to the Fall Festival with her daughter Scarlet for what she called “a family fun day.” They come every year, said Szuba, who noted Scarlet, who is almost 6, really enjoyed the rides. “She can handle them better than I can,” Szuba said.

It was great to see so many people come out and support their community.

What many may not realize about this annual event, is that it is run by a nonprofit, and is still a fundraiser as it was intended over 60 years ago. For more information, check out the event page at plymouthfallfestival.com.

OUT& AB OU T SCARECROWS IN THE PARK Through Oct. 31 The Kellogg Park scarecrows are back through Oct. 31. However, due to new fountain construction, the Scarecrows will be placed a little differently in Kellogg Park this year.

Some scarecrows may need to be placed in flower beds around the park and along downtown streets.

The annual invasion of the scarecrows is organized by the Plymouth Community Chamber of Commerce. About 100 scarecrows have been put up and decorated by chamber members, non-profit organizations, community groups and local residents. For more information, visit www. plymouthmich.org.

THE CIVILITY PROJECT Oct. 6 The Plymouth Community Chamber of Commerce will present the Civility Project Luncheon & Workshop from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. at The Inn at St. John's.

The event, which is part of the chamber’s Diversity Initiative, will feature journalists Nolan Finley and Stephen Henderson. They are longtime friends, despite their different perspectives on pretty much everything.
