The Power of Imagination This fall, we are asking our viewers to experience a world created by the imaginations of contemporary artists. When you walk through the front door this season, you will enter a world created in the minds of some of the most engaging emerging artists in Canada today. So, we ask, what is the power of imagination? Does it make you envision a world of Elsewheres and Magical Mystery Beards, as in Jay Dart’s Greetings from Yawnder! Does it allow you to disrupt the status quo and express individual experience, as in The Images in Our Heads? Does the freedom of the imagination transport you to a far away land, as in Robert Bourdeau’s Edge of the Visible, or does it take you right back home, as you experience Canadian landscape in Land, Sea & Air?
When you visit, we hope you will allow your mind to wander and be open as you experience the installations. You will have the opportunity to be both the viewer and the story-teller as you inhabit worlds filled with creativity and fueled by the most powerful material in the artist’s studio: imagination.

Curator’s Choice In 2015, the RMG received a donation of twelve outstanding photographs by Kingstonborn artist, Robert Bourdeau. Like the slow food movement, his practice is all about the slow and considered shot. Not only does he spend his time finding the perfect location, but the shutter speed of his large format camera is slowed considerably allowing for incredible detail in the resulting image. Of the
works given, I was particularly drawn to his 1975 photograph Yorkshire, England. Bourdeau has taken the photograph from a distance, overlooking the horizontal striations that delineate ownership of land. It’s the timelessness of the work that is particularly striking— this gold-toned print could as easily been taken in the late 19th century and speaks to generations of people who have lived on and worked the land. - Linda Jansma, Senior Curator
Volunteer Profile Steven Bland has been an active volunteer in our education department since 2013. He’s often found delivering community outreach activities in our Art Express tent (pictured at The Peony Festival). Steven’s most recent project will be to interview key community members in the gallery’s evolution to capture our rich local history in celebration of the RMG’s 50 th Anniversary in 2017. Land Sea & Air August 13, 2016 - January 22, 2017 While Canada’s population is becoming increasingly urbanized, our roots are in the land. Long before the making of this nation, however, the First Nations people and Inuit relied upon it to provide for their needs both physically and spiritually. European explorers would ultimately of course, change how the land that is now called Canada, would be viewed. Canada’s land is both vast and diverse, our geographies encompassing mountains, prairies, rivers and lakes. We have “incorporated” the landscape by creating national and provincial parks, both wilderness and urban, and have even made designated lookout points along travel routes so that the most noteworthy view is not missed. We “commune” with it by camping in it, while Page 6 | Modern + Beyond Issue 19 | Fall 2016
simultaneously endangering it through environmentally suspect decisions at both micro and macro levels. Yet the land endures. We are defined by it, frustrated with it and ultimately awed by it. The RMG’s database keyword search for “landscape” lists over 700— from its collection of over 4,500—works. These works range in medium from drawings and prints to photographs and painting and span three centuries from 1860 to 2010 and from broad and grand views to intimate “portraits” of the land. Land, Sea & Air is a celebration of all that is the Canadian landscape and is as diverse as the artists who depict it. - Curated by Linda Jansma

Last Call: Temperance and Prohibition in Oshawa August 25, 2016 – January 4, 2017 Opening at RMG Fridays: November 4, 7-10pm One of the most divisive social and political issues of the late 19th century and early 20th century was the question of the availability of alcohol. It was the efforts of temperance organizations, that forced the hands of politicians to introduce prohibition in Ontario in 1916. The rhetoric for the temperance movement suggested that alcohol was the source of society’s troubles: poverty, violence, crime, declining health etc. The images that appeared in print to support their movement depicted the destructive force of alcohol in various ways, with particular emphasis on
the negative effects on families. Meanwhile, the anti-prohibition movement argued that a dry Ontario produced criminals, increased secret drinking, violated personal liberties, and increased drug usage. This exhibition explores the history of prohibition in Ontario, and how it impacted Oshawa using historical images and artefacts from both the Thomas Bouckley Collection and the Oshawa Museum. -C urated by Sonya Jones and Melissa Cole

Imagining alternative spaces fuels us with the agency to be different, to try on new identities and embodiments, to express individual experience and longing, to disrupt the status quo and to for m pathways to change. Through our bodies, our words, our communities and our art, these imaginings find their portals out to the public and find meaning in those who witness, who watch and who carefully listen.
our gods, our identities, our purposes or roles in society. Living with and taking pride in the experience of disability and difference lends itself to dismantling these messages that isolate, exclude, segregate and tell us that we shouldn’t be here.
Sometimes our imaginings are hijacked by messages in the media, and by stereotypes and cultural perceptions of the ‘real’. Robert Bourdeau: Edge of the Visible October 1, 2016 - January 29, 2017 Tour at RMG Fridays: November 4, 7-10pm Since the 1970s, Kingston-born photographer Robert Bourdeau has gained a reputation for his large camera format images. In the images in this exhibition, Bourdeau uses film, and is not only known for his technical perfection, but the unique gold chloride solution that adds a particularly warm tone to his silver gelatin prints. Bourdeau’s practice has been dominated by two compositional styles: the very detailed view where a rock wall might fill the entire frame, or a larger, distant view that encompasses both a great breadth and depth of a landscape. The microcosmic view is captured through the long exposure and camera size used which allows for details that draw the viewer into his world. He has also long been interested in abandoned and disintegrated building sites.
Within this exhibition are six works from his 1970’s Sri Lanka (Ceylon) series. These pre-twelfth century Buddhist and Hindu temples had been reclaimed by the jungle, but had yet to be restored, speaking to an historical time that was only beginning to be regained. Bourdeau’s photographs simultaneously speak to the past and the present, within a bath of subtle light. Edge of the Visible includes twelve recent additions of photographs by Bourdeau to the RMG collection. His aim is to understand the underlying structural complexity of nature, methodically composing each work with a subtle, clarifying light. Curated by Linda Jansma

Jay Dart: Greetings from Yawnder! October 8, 2016 - January 15, 2017 Opening at RMG Fridays: October 7, 7-10pm

Jay Dart has created fictional worlds known as Yawnder and Elsewheres in order to explain his creative process. The main character, referred to by Dart as his alter ego, Jiggs, is on a journey to discover an original idea. Each of his illustrations contributes to the evolving narrative about the mystical nature of inspiration, the search for innovative creation, and the dissemination of ideas.
world Dart has created allows him to communicate his own challenges and exploits as a visual artist, as well as connect with the universal experiences of all creators.
Dart also uses allegories to toy with current challenges (and opportunities) facing contemporary artists and creators: new technologies such as cloud computing, social networking, and the global community of the internet. Dart sees the experience of inspiration as a private process with the internal ingestion of external influences taking place, and new ideas taking shape. Each illustration will recount a different layer to the story, inviting the viewer to help Jiggs on his journey. There will be installations of geist trees, jars with Magical Mystery Beards, and twig libraries, bringing Yawnder beyond the pages and into the gallery space. Visitors will be asked to participate in the creation and dissemination of ideas. With activities stations throughout the gallery space, this participatory exhibition will have the visitor contributing to both the story and the creative process. - Curated by Sonya Jones

Imagination runs wild this fall The last weekend in September brings Culture Days, a Canada wide celebration of the arts. Communities everywhere are making plans to fire up creativity. The RMG has a weekend of exciting things in the works. Check our website for details. In October, explore Jay Dart’s enchanting worlds of Yawnder and Beyawnder. Get lost in the land of Elsewheres, geists and magical mystery beards. There is a warm spot in my heart for this artist’s captivating work. I have followed his trajectory for years and am delighted the RMG is presenting Greetings from Yawnder! Save the date! RMG Exposed is back on Saturday November 12. It was a packed house last year for this photo-based fundraiser. RMG Exposed is a great evening for art collectors, art curious, RMG fans and friends. When you buy a ticket you’re helping the RMG to provide free arts programming in our community. Keep an eye out for early bird pricing! Join us in December for the RMG Fridays Kitchen Party edition. Make your own ugly stick (yes, it’s a thing!) and gather with a stalwart group of local musicians as they mash-up East Coast style for a rollicking, footstomping good time. Where do you see yourself?
