“I want to thank everyone for the warm welcome I have had joining the team here at The Robert McLaughlin Gallery. From the moment I began in June, there has been a palpable excitement as we move from celebrating and remembering the incredible accomplishments of the last 50 years to dreaming big about our future. One of the things I have admired most about the RMG is how relationships have always been at the core of everything the gallery does. Strong relationships with artists, community collaborators and with you, our audience. It is my goal to continue to build and foster these relationships; creating programming that engages, inspires and brings people together to see the world in new ways. I hope you come by and see all of the amazing exhibitions we have lined up for fall. Leila Timmins

The Forgotten Epidemic September 1, 2018-January 20, 2019 Near the end of World War I, the Spanish Influenza swept the world killing 50-100 million people, more than the Great War, and is the deadliest outbreak of infectious disease in recorded history. The flu was not often covered in the media due to wartime censorship and is often called the “forgotten epidemic. Incorrectly thought to have started in Spain, the epidemic got its name because neutral Spanish newspapers frequently covered the devastating impact of the disease while others were focused on the war. In Canada, this epidemic had profound social and economic impacts on a country that was recovering from the effects of the Great War. This exhibition features historical photos and newspaper clippings from various sources that document the national impact. Curated by Sonya Jones

Kim Morgan, Sigh, 2016, installation

Public Notice September 15, 2018-January 13, 2019 Opening Reception: October 5, 7pm Stephen Andrews, Ruth Cuthand, Alison Humphrey, Kim Morgan, Abraham Anghik Ruben, Ho Tam, Elaine Whittaker Fear and disease go hand in hand. Media and technology often spread hysteria and fear around disease. As fear swells, it plays various roles in how a disease is spread and understood. While inciting fear can encourage precautions, it also divides the healthy from the unhealthy, those who are willing to help from those who are not, and often fact from fiction. The works in Public Notice deal with disease and illness and their impact historically and racially, look at loss and misunderstanding, and contrast scientific facts to fiction. While fear often trumps empathy and understanding, the works in this exhibition refuse to let fear have the last word. Curated by Sonya Jones Page 8 | Modern + Beyond | Fall/Winter 2018

Inaabiwin

Tanya Lukin Linklater, The treaty is in the body, image still from video, 2017

September 22, 2018-January 6, 2019 Opening reception: November 2, 7pm Scott Benesiinaabandan, Hannah Claus, Tanya Lukin Linklater, Meryl McMaster, and Greg Staats In Anishnaabemowin, inaabiwin means “movement of light” and is used to describe lightning. Indigenous peoples embody a relational approach to understanding and interacting with the world which allows them to engage more deeply through complex relationships with themselves and the natural world. Through colonization, this way of being and knowing has been compromised. The artists in this exhibition use their varied art practices to reclaim these ways of being and knowing, hoping to restore compromised connections and encourage audiences to follow. As we seek to understand our place in the world, relearning these relations is essential, and will help us navigate today’s challenges and thrive on the lands we call home. From his earliest screen prints to his final paintings, Lander’s aesthetic combines high style, humour, saturated colour, and a kind of yearning. Luminous John Lander includes work exhibited during Lander’s solo exhibition at the RMG in 1988, as well as prints and paintings never previously exhibited, from several private collections. “I’m a father of four children. The Arts are a way for individuals to express themselves. Music, visual art, and writing don’t often get the attention they deserve. The RMG is a wonderful place for children to develop their artistic abilities and learn how to express themselves. We are very pleased to support this wonderful organization in our community.” Ehren Mendum, CFA Portfolio Manager, Mendum Wealth Management
