THE VOICE

Welcome to this crazy time of the semester! We hope that your exam study is going well and your smashing out the last of your assignments. We hope you enjoy our final issue and don’t use it to procrastinate too badly, study does need to happen at some point... Soon it will be the holidays so keep on working hard, it will be worth it!

As the year comes to a close it is time for the student residents of RMC to elect new executive members for 2019. There was a big turnout for the election and it was great to see so many people participating! Congratulations to the new exec members for 2019 and well done to everyone who applied for a position, even if you didn’t get it don’t be discouraged and make sure to keep getting involved furing 2019!

The topic for this years RMC vs. DLC debate was “Whether residents should have a vote in determining the Residental Advisors”. RMC was on the pro side and Dan, Bell and Owen argued their points to perfection with Corey acting as their silent speaker providing them with notes for rebuttal.
Although we were still defeated, RMC had a much bigger support turnout and we walked away very proud of our debaters.

As the final post-grad event of the year, the night was filled with good food and a fun trivia event shared by the post-grad community of RMC. There was lots of yummy food and the online trivia was a big hit!
We’ve been very lucky this year to have had such a great range of post-grad events and hopefully they contrinue!

Sunday was a big day for college as it was our last college sport for the year and the score for this year was extremely close! The girls and guys played wonderfully, cheered on by a large number of supporters.
Unfortunately, we did not manage to beat DLC overall but it was certainly an eventful sporting year. Thank you to everyone who played and supported our teams and a massive thank you to Tami for being such a great sports rep.
To finish here’s a quote from Cindy: “If I were to describe the energy today...wholesome af”

The Halloween Harbour Cruise is fantastic event every year and this year really produced the goods with a huge series of amazing outfits! Congrats to the Station Link girls who went home with the best outfit prize! And a big shout out to Keely for taking all these wonderful photos during the night!

The last formal dinner of the year was held on Thursday. Once again everyone donned their best dresses and suits ready for a night of memories. The food was exquisite and the company was ever better. We all thoroughly enjoyed listening to reflections given by Julian, Jonty, Zoe, Cindy and Keely while we reminisced about our own college memories.
The annual maintenance perform lived up to its legacy of a being brilliant. The night ended with a beautiful performance from Lauren C, Cindy and Vivian. It was a lovely end to a lovely year.

The maintenance team has always been a real close knit community within the college and to demonstrate their skills each year John prepares a song for the team to sing at the Valedictory Dinner. This year, after some planning and a couple rewrites from John, the song was constructed. Fluro shirts were handed out as the team performed in true maintenance fashion. Although not perfectly on pitch, the team sang with enthusiasm and that’s what made the performance great!

For those who are interested to see how much effort John put into adjusting the lyrics to create the maintenance song, here are the lyrics:
Well there’s a young lad working at the garden out by the pond
He’s been working out there, working half the day,
I’ve never ever even seen him stop
Shovels dirt around, buries Sable in the ground
He grabs a seat and he says
What about me? It isn’t fair
I’ve worked so much, and no one cares
Can’t you see, I want a rest
But you just break more than I fix
Well there’s a pretty girl sitting at the table out in the sun
She’s been studying out there, hoping for a chat,
Andrew walks out, and sadly he stops
Well, she’s not too proud, to talk all day
Petho runs out and he screams
What about me? It isn’t fair
I’ve had enough, now I’m losing my hair
Won’t you please, go back to work
You don’t deserve your morning tea
Petho, take a step back and see the dirt I’ve shovelled
It may look fun / but we’re the ones / that make the college look great
So listen when we say:
“Give us out tea”
And now I’m sitting upstairs eating chicken and rice
Nothing’s changed, the vegies the same
And I’m feeling cold and alone
I guess I’m lucky, I drink a lot
But sometimes I wish for more than I’ve got
What about me? It isn’t fair
I’ve had enough and I’m losing hair
Won’t you please, go back to work
Cos you don’t deserve you
What about me? It isn’t fair
I’ve had enough, now I want my share
Can’t you see, I want to live
You just break more
You just break more
But you just break more than I fix
Manawari means ‘to discover’ in the Darug language, the native tongue of the original owners of the land on which our college was established. On Monday 22nd October, RMC residents were joined by students from the Bush University in the Northern Territory, Walanga Muru and local Aboriginal artist Peta-Joy Williams. We were fortunate to have the opportunity to hear from Peta who helped us create RMC’s first Indigenous Australian artwork. It portrays the Rainbow Serpent which, according to the Indigenous Australian Dreamtime, created the land and everything we see. It was amazing to see everyone’s contribution to the artwork using the colours significant to the Indigenous People’s of the area. The evening ended with an outdoor viewing of ‘Bran Nue Dae’, a modern Australian comedy that touched on Indigenous Australian culture in a light-hearted way.
- Jessie (Cultural Exec Rep 2018 and the wonderful organiser of this event)

Spooky season has arrived! It was a dark and (kind of) stormy night and a bunch of residents gathered in the courtyard to begin the series of challenges that encompassed Haunted RMC. From cult chants, riddle solving, key finding and creepy story telling, the night was filled with halloween spirit! Big thanks goes out to the Community RAs who organised the event, particularly Jake who killed everyone and to Keely who took all these great photos!

As the final A-Block event of the year and to relax from exam study, A-Block residents gathered in the TV room and watched the Scooby Doo movie. Treated by their wonderful RAs, the residents enjoyed chicken nuggies, cake and pop-corn!
Hosted by the wonderful B-Block RAs, residents underwent a short tutorial on how to make some of Wang’s famous dumplings! Many many dumplings were made and were thoroughly enjoyed by everyone involvedeven if folding the edges was a little difficult!

E-block has had a smattering of events lately. From UBar trivia and pizza to recovery pancakes after harbour cruise to our donut stress night. Good luck with studying, everyone. Remember to take breaks & look after yourself!
- Sarah (E-Block RA 2018)

After an amazing 2018, its very important to thank all the incredible RAs who’ve worked so hard all year to take care of us all and host these amazing events! RMC would never be the same without these wonderful people and even if we don’t say it often - we are all so very grateful for all the work you put into the job and how well you run the blocks!
Here’s a bit of a funny throw-back photo from this years Harbour cruise where the RAs dressed up as Mario characters!

On Saturday evening D Block had a Pre-Exam chill out in the forest with yummy pizza. After this, soccer skills were put to the test in a friendly game, which later became more serious with aerial work and numerous headers. Thanks for a great time D Block!
- Helen (D-Block RA)

This is a topic that has been discussed and debated for many years and on Sunday night (11/11), SRA Lily Strachan tackled this topic at Trinity Chapel Macquarie’s weekly service. This discussion took us on a journey through the entire story of the bible, with Lily pinpointing shining moments for women and the attitude God has towards them. Characters such as Eve, Esther and Mary are just a few of the incredible women that were mentioned.
Lily made the interesting point that a lot of the foundational thoughts and conceptions about Christianity were witnessed by women. A woman gave birth to Jesus, women watched him die, and women were the first to see Jesus after he rose from the dead. At a time in history where women were treated as second class citizens, the testimony of these women highlights how God trusts, loves and treats women with equality. Throughout history both Christians and non-Christians have participated
in deplorable acts of inequality against women. But God does not condone this. He is upset and angry with these actions! He instructs us all to act as Jesus did, to welcome, value and respect women and others in our communities.
Yes, there are some challenging concepts in the bible about women, but ultimately Christianity is GOOD NEWS for women. This goodness isn’t just for women though, it is good news for everyone! Even you! “Jesus alone can save us!” He died on a cross so that we can know and be in a relationship with God, the creator of the world!
If you have any questions about this or anything to do with Jesus or Christianity, please feel free to talk to any of the SRAs or the Chaplaincy RAs. You can also listen to Lily’s talk at http://tcm.org.au/ learn/

After a big turnout for this semester’s first exam supper and the extremely quick decline in snacks, make sure to come along to the rest of the exam suppers during the exam period!
There will be lots of snacks and it’s always important to take a break from studying for a little yummy sustenance!

We would like to say thank you to this year’s Exec for an amazing year full of events. From O-Week to spring festival, earth hour to ball, we are all incredibly grateful for everything that you guys have done for us.
Thank you for giving your time to help us all have the best time at college, it was a blast! Also don’t forget to check out the new air hockey game in the common room, courtesy of our brilliant exec.

With a little remaining money in the budget (thanks to the financial wizard Tom) the Exec treated RMC to one last gift - some engraved glasses as a memorial of the year and all the wonderful memories! Although they’re not big enough for a full beer, they could definitely hold a decent amount of wine, or if you’re pre-drinking real hard they’re perfect for a couple of shots (but only if you’re out in the Forest celebrating after exam period)!

Monday afternoon proved to be an excellent distraction from study with the arrival of the petting zoo. There were chicks, goats, rabbits and more for everyone to hold and love. Some lucky people even got to feed the goats. Everyone was a little bit more relaxed and ready to tackle the next task. Thank you to the Academic RAs for planning this!!

As The Voice editors during 2018 we have been at every event, reporting, photographing and secretly wiretapping every ridiculous out of context thing you all say, as well as recapping all the bizarre things that happen at college events. From organising our big list of Humans of RMC, having to submit our own dumb wiretaps and eating all the food at the different block events while we did important “journalism” work. It’s been a real privilege to work on The Voice.
We both hope you have all loved reading the editions because we have definitely

loved working our butts off to get them done! We would not have had such a great year without everyone’s participation, whether it be through the Wiretap, Humans of RMC, submitting photographs, doing event write-ups or just being dedicated readers and we are so appreciative of you all. A big shout out particularly goes to our illustrator Sylvana - the covers would not have happened without you!
We’re sorry to be leaving The Voice and wish we could do it forever, it’s been so rewarding and we hope all the future editors enjoy it as much as we have!

And a big congratulations goes out to Leila and Lucy who are the 2019 Voice Editors! We are 100% certain you’ll both do an incredible job and we are really looking forward to seeing how The Voice continues to develop next year!

Where are you from? And what do you like most about your home town?
I’m from Armidale, it’s not a very exciting town but my pets are there so that’s always a bonus. It also looks really pretty in Autumn.
What do you study and what do you like the most about your degree?
I study a bachelor of Law and Arts majoring in French. My favourite thing about it is learning a new language and learning how different legal principles affect our lives. Not a fan of all the readings though.
What is a fun fact about you?
I learnt how to sail so I would have an answer for this question. So, my fun fact is I know how to sail but not very well, I fell out of the boat once.
What has been your favourite part about being one of The Voice editors?
My favourite part has been seeing different people hanging out at the events and seeing everyone read The Voice (although that has been terrifying too). I have also loved working with my amazing coeditor Zoe, it has certainly been a wonderful experience!!

How did you and your co-editor meet?
The first time I met Zoe was when Soph and I had to wake her up from a nap before dinner. From that moment, I knew that this girl had her priorities right and we were going to be good friends.
What were some of your favourite Wiretaps said by your co-editor?
A lot of Zoe’s wiretaps were anonymous but I managed to find these gems:
“I can climb him like a tree” “I wish the double chin was part of the snap chat filter…”
“You think you deserve my pants” “I don’t have a life but I still haven’t done my readings”

What can your co-editor not live without?
Zoe has so many lip glosses that all of college could have moisturized lips and I definitely know that she plans on getting more. Also, swearing, Zoe would not be Zoe without swearing but it’s always entertaining.

Where are you from? And what do you like most about your home town?
I’m from a small small town outside Bega (yes, Bega cheese), on a small property outside town. It’s always really nice to go home because it’s so isolated and is nowhere near as humid and smoggy as Sydney is! We live on a small vineyard so it’s always really nice coming home!
What do you study and what do you like the most about your degree?
I study a double degree, a Bachelor of Biodiversity and Conservation with a Bachelor of Archaeology majoring in Environmental Earth Science and Climate Science. I really love what I study, it gives me so many opportunities to be out in the environment doing field work. Being able
to study sustainability and conservation work has really inspired me to do ecological work and make a difference.
What is a fun fact about you?
I really hate this question, I always find it difficult to answer when I get asked this during the first tutorial of the semester. I felt a little bad about always making people answer this question for Humans of RMC. So I guess my fun fact would be that I’m actually a member of the Macquarie University Sustainability Squad Exec - so here’s some shameless plugging - make sure to go and like our FB page, we have a ton of great initiatives and events that I’ll be working hard on during 2019!

What has been your favourite part about being one of The Voice editors?
My favourite part about being co-editor is definitely doing the Wiretap, I secretly
quote people around college all the time and it was always amusing seeing their faces when they read the editon at dinner and realised! I got so used to quoting all the dumb things people said that I even began to do it to friends at uni and even to my brother when I went home for the break! So who knows if I’ll ever stop quoting people!?
But I’ve also really loved working with Jen, we were great friends before we started this role and it’s only made us closer! She’s made it so much fun and I couldn’t have picked a better co-editor!
What were some of your favourite WIretaps said by your co-editor?
“Yeet scientology” has to be one of my favourite Jen quotes! But these ones are also great;
“Give up your morals”
“Please don’t take my potatoes to Ranch, they don’t want to have a lit time”
“I’d date a dinosaur”
“College ground is not good farming ground”
Some of the other great Jen quotes would probably be censored so I’d better not put them in!
What can your co-editor not live without?
There’s a whole range of things that Jen can’t live without! But if I were to narrow it down it would defrinitley be; confetti, sharks, baby snake videos (she is becoming very knowledgable in this area, she usually watches the videos while she procrastinates), greensleeves (the song), her family, and a huge range of cute skirts! Haha I love that this list makes her seem so bizzare!

To avoid giving you something to concentrate on (because everyone is exhausted from exams and assessments) here’s a nice and easy dot-to-dot for you to have a go at if you’re in a proper procrastination mood.
