Barnes & Noble is on its way to Riverdale, will be in new Manhattan College student center By ANDREW WOLF with MONICA HORAN and MAYA ASTABIE A Barnes & Noble Bookstore is coming to Riverdale, opening as soon as next fall. But the catch is that the store will be located on the Manhattan College campus, in the new Ray Kelly Student Commons Building now under construction on Waldo Avenue. It is not clear that the store, which will clearly focus on college textbooks, but is also expected to carry best sellers and popular general interest books, will be accessible to the public at large. Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz, Jr. was noticeably excited by the prospect, as it seems to fit in quite nicely with his economic development agenda. “It’s great to see that Barnes & Noble and Manhattan College are partnering on their new bookstore. It would be even greater if this store we’re able to be open to the public, similar to off-campus stores operated by Columbia University in Manhattan. Be it a bestseller or a Manhattan College t-shirt, Riverdale residents and Bronxites in general would greatly benefit from another bookstore, and I hope that the college gives this idea serious consideration. My office is ready to assist them in this effort should they pursue it in the future,” said the Borough President. Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz saw the news as a golden opportunity to bring the college and the Riverdale public at large closer together. “The college is an integral part of our community. It would be even
more wonderful if community residents had access to such the bookstore as well as the students.. Especially since the closing of Paperbacks Plus, many people in Riverdale and Kingsbridge have been yearning for a bookstore, so I would hope if this bookstore becomes a reality that the college opens it up to the community of which they have been a part of for so many years.” These sentiments were echoed by newly-elected City Councilman Andrew Cohen. “It is terrific to see Manhattan College and Barnes & Noble teaming up to open a new bookstore in the Ray Kelly Student Commons on Waldo Avenue. This can be a win-win for the College and the Riverdale community if the store is accessible to the public. It would give residents a new bookstore to shop at and strengthen the relationship between the College and the community. I am willing to work with Manhattan College and Borough President Ruben Diaz, Jr. to make this a reality,” said Council Member Andrew Cohen. Manhattan College’s current bookstore, operated by the Follett College Bookstore organization is closing its doors, as Barnes & Noble has won the contract and prepares to come to campus as the college’s new bookstore operator in the Kelly Commons, as reported in the Manhattan College student newspaper, the Quadrangle. “Barnes & Noble offered the best direction and vision to serve our campus
The new Student Commons building on the Manhattan College campus will be named for former Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly, a Manhattan College alum, and contain a Barnes & Noble bookstore.
This rendering of the interior of the new Student Commons building at Manhattan College pictures the area surrounding the college bookstore, which will be run by Barnes & Noble. community through a vibrant new store design incorporating products, services and technology we believed can best meet the needs of students, faculty and friends of MC,” said Kenneth Waldof, director of business services at the College. During the past week, students took advantage of the clearance sales in the bookstore not knowing the reason behind the sudden discounts. “I saw signs and took advantage of the deals. Nowhere did it indicate that they were closing,” senior Linda Latifaj said. “I had no idea.” Since last semester, different companies have been proposing bids for the contract of MC’s bookstore in the new student commons scheduled to open in the fall of this year. Ultimately in a unanimous decision by the campus store selection committee, Barnes & Noble was chosen. Follett’s contract with Manhattan College had expired, which forced the administration to search for other providers. Follett will leave entirely by spring break and Barnes & Noble will manage the bookstore in Leo for the remainder of the semester until they are able to move into the new building. “It definitely seems like a smart move for the college, [Barnes & Noble] is obviously a well-known company,” Latifaj said. Waldof also addressed the decision to switch providers mid-semester. “This proved to be more efficient for students and faculty versus transitioning
in the midst of the semester start up,” Waldof said. Campus bookstores are far from new territory for Barnes & Noble, as they currently serve over 650 colleges and universities across the nation. They have contracts locally with stores including Fordham, Columbia and Pace universities. “We expect they will bring their knowledge, experience and success from other institutions to help them serve Manhattan College,” Waldof added. Going forward, students can expect a new look and wider range of MC apparel and products to choose from. “A new B&N Manhattan College Campus Store website under the B&N banner will also be introduced,” Waldof said. Barnes & Noble will take returns for students’ rented textbooks under the same terms and their original rental agreements. They will also buy back the new and used textbooks that students purchased from Follett. As for campus employment, Barnes & Noble will hire students as Follett did. “My understanding is B&N welcomes our students who have worked for Follett to apply for positions with them,” Waldof said. Non-student employees who currently work at the Leo bookstore are hired by Follett and will not stay on under the new management. “The Follett management team have opportunities within Follett at other locations,” Waldof concluded.

Top State ed official discusses Common Core curriculum at P.S. 24 Senator Jeff Klein (D- Bronx/Westchester) hosted a town hall meeting at P.S. 24 last week to establish a constructive dialogue between local school districts and state education officials on the most important issues surrounding new Common Core standards. Roughly 75 local educators participated in the event, which was moderated by Senator Klein and Chancellor Merryl Tisch. The town hall format provided an opportunity for attendees to voice their concerns over a variety of issues, including the ability to share student data with outside third-parties and learn more about the implementation of the new Common Core Learning Standards. Dr. Merryl H. Tisch, Chancellor of the New York State Board of Regents, along with Bronx Regent Betty Rosa and
several officials from the State Education Department (SED) attended the event, including Dennis Tompkins, External Affairs Chief; Ken Wagner, Deputy Commissioner for Curriculum Assessment and Education Technology; and Nicolas Storellicastro, Governmental Relations & Special Projects. Noticeably absent was P.S. 24 principal Donna Connelly, who is thought not to favor the content-based Common Core curriculum and instead favors so-called “Social and Emotional Learning” which stresses promoting self-esteem, eschewing the content learning that is at the center of the new curriculum. Senator Klein said: “We all want our children to receive the best education possible in accordance with the highest standards. At the same time, I think we

have identified clear shortcomings in the implementation of Common Core that should be addressed on a statewide basis. We need to do everything we can to invest in not only our students, but also in our teachers, so that they can meet the demands of this rigorous new curriculum. I’m pleased that the Board of Regents has recently adopted some important changes to the Common Core implementation and I’m hopeful that today’s discussion will provide another opportunity to incorporate constructive suggestions in to the implementation.” The New York Board of Regents formally adopted the Common Core State Standards in 2010 and fully implemented these learning standards in the 2013-2014 school year for Pre-K through 8th grade. However, parents and educators have been concerned with its initial rollout. In response to these concerns, Chancellor Tisch established a Regents Work Group that was responsible for providing a review of the first three and a half years of Common Core implementation in December 2013. On February 10, 2013, the group released its report, which offered adjustment options that reflected concerns raised by parents, experts, and educators during previous education forums held across the state. Recommendations included additional funding for professional development and extending a phase-in for Common Core-aligned Regents exams, so that the first class required to pass new exams in English and mathematics would be the class of 2022. “The state faces many educational issues including how and when to implement common core. But I have other concerns as well. How much time is spent taking standardized tests? How much instructional time is spent preparing for those tests- and teaching to the tests? What basic skills;
including learning cursive writing and memorization of multiplication tables, are not required parts of the curriculum? Our children need more instructional time on basic skills in order to deal with the higher standards of common core,” said Assemblyman Jeff Dinowitz (D-Riverdale) Bronx Regent Betty Rosa said: “I’m grateful to the Senator for creating an opportunity for the communities that he represents to engage in a dialogue about the challenging issues that we are facing. The opportunity for an intellectual exchange of ideas help us all focus on our children. It is clear that his priority and focus are on our children. Donna Connelly, Principal at P.S. 24, who somehow never showed up to greet the state’s highest education official when she visited her school, sent a statement Continued on Page 3

Dinowitz asks city’s DOT to improve traffic and parking in North Riverdale Dinowitz wrote. ‘Therefore, I am requesting the Department of Transportation remove the ‘No Parking Anytime’ signs that are located just south of 2735 Henry Hudson Parkway and north of West 227th Street and have them replaced by signs which say ‘No Parking Weekdays 7AM-4 PM.’’ The DOT has not yet responded to either request.

Continued from Page 2 saying: “I applaud Senator Klein for hosting this informative meeting with our community and working to make certain that every parent, teacher, and student has a seat at the table. There are clearly many areas we can improve upon to make Common Core work better. We want our input to be heard loud and clear by the policy makers in Albany. It’s in everyone’s interest to provide enough feedback to our decision makers so that they can work with us to strengthen student performance without jeopardizing our ability to educate our children.” Senator Klein has routinely met with educators and parents who have been advocating for changes to the Common Core Learning Standards. Earlier this month, the Senator called for the Board of Regents to delay the operation of the Education Data Portal for at least one year, which had raised privacy concerns among parents and students. Shortly thereafter, the State Education Department announced it would delay releasing student information to inBloom, the nonprofit organization that has been tasked with collecting and storing such data for school districts.

Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz (D-Bronx) has requested that the New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) look into ways to improve traffic safety in North Riverdale while also calling for DOT to restore lost parking on Henry Hudson Parkway and West 227th Street. In a letter written to DOT Bronx Borough Commissioner Constance Moran, Dinowitz stated that a high percentage of the traffic complaints his office receives emanate from North Riverdale, with residents showing particular concern for pedestrian safety as a result of speeding cars. Further, a number of the intersections in the area are not fourway right angled intersections, adding to concerns that exist regarding overall traffic safety. ‘I am requesting the (DOT) to conduct a comprehensive traffic study in the bounded area between Riverdale Avenue on the west and Broadway on the east, and between the New York City line on the north and West 254th Street on the south,’ Dinowitz wrote. In South Riverdale, Assemblyman Dinowitz has asked that the DOT remove several ‘No Parking Anytime’ signs located just south of 2735 Henry Hudson Parkway and north of West 227th Street that have eliminated much needed parking spaces in the area. The signs were added as a result of ongoing construction in the area, but as Dinowitz noted in his letter the construction only takes place on weekdays between 7 am and 4 pm and parking in the area is already at a premium. ‘Due to the shortage of parking in the area, it is important that these parking spots be restored for part of the day,’

Around the schools... Manhattan College
With tax season in full swing, students in Manhattan College’s School of Business are once again teaming up with the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program to provide free tax preparation services to local Bronx residents. The free service is offered at the Refuge House in the Fordham Bedford section of the Bronx for qualified Bronx residents in partnership with University Neighborhood Housing Program (UNHP), Fordham Bedford Community Services and Ariva Inc. The VITA program offers free tax preparation assistance with electronic filing nationally to qualified families with an income of $56,000 and under and individuals with a gross income below $26,000. By way of volunteer aid, the free income tax preparation service allows for clients to avoid typically expensive tax preparation fees and interest rates. In addition to serving local Bronx residents, the program provides valuable accounting experience for the student volunteers. All volunteers complete an IRS certification program, which develops the necessary skills required to complete tax preparation, and a software training covering a range of tax credits and New York State tax filing. Nearly 50 Manhattan College business students are participating in this year’s VITA program, which first started in 2010. “The VITA program melds the best of what runs deep within the Jasper student body, motivated men and women striving for academic excellence, all the while being mindful of their responsi-
bility to give back to the community at large,” said David Cohen, CPA, visiting instructor of accounting. “It’s exciting to be a part of it.” In 2013, the VITA program at UNHP resulted in more than $2.3 million (1,812 returns) worth of tax refunds to Bronx residents with an average earned income credit refund of $2,047. Free income tax preparation is still available for qualified Bronx residents on select Saturdays (March 22 and 29, and April 5) from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Wednesdays (March 12, 26 and April 9) from 1 to 6 p.m., for the remainder of tax season at the Refuge House at 2715 Bainbridge Ave., Bronx, N.Y., by appointment only. Contact UNHP by phone at (718) 9332539 for more information and visit the IRS website to learn more about VITA and other city locations. Qualifying Manhattan College students and employees are also welcome to visit a city location. Manhattan College is located at West 242nd Street near Broadway in the Riverdale section of the Bronx, one mile from the Westchester County line and accessible by MTA subway line No. 1. For directions to the campus, visit www.manhattan.edu.

Oscar and The Bronx In Hollywood every year, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences votes its highest award, the Oscar, to those deserving few working both in front of and behind the cameras. Through the years, some of the motion pictures who received this accolade had some connection with The Bronx. In 1955, for instance, Ernest Borgnine received the Oscar for best performance by an actor in the film “Marty.” The movie also won the Oscar for the best picture of the year. The screenplay was written by Bronxite Paddy Chayefsky from his own television play. Moreover, the entire plot of the story was set in The Bronx and the hero Borgnine played was a Bronx butcher. One of the background scenes depicted a walk by night along Fordham Road with the old RKO Fordham Theater clearly distinguishable. Eleven years later, Peter Finch won the Oscar for best actor in “Network.” At the same time, Faye Dunaway won the award for best actress in the same film. Yet, it was also another triumph for Paddy Chayefsky. This son of The Bronx wrote the screenplay for that movie as well.
In 1962, Anne Bancroft received the Oscar for best performance by an actress in “The Miracle Worker.” She played Annie Sullivan, the teacher of the young blind and deaf Helen Keller. Anne Bancroft also came from The Bronx, growing up as Anna Maria Italiano and graduating from Christopher Columbus High School. Moreover, the screenplay was based on the Broadway play of the same name, in which Anne Bancroft also appeared. The play was written by William Gibson, who grew up in the Highbridge neighborhood of The Bronx. Similarly, in 1979, Dustin Hoffman was named the best actor for “Kramer vs. Kramer,” and the film won the Oscar for best picture of the year. The movie was written by Avery Corman who grew up in the vicinity of Kingsbridge Road between the Grand Concourse and Jerome Avenue. The following year, Robert DeNiro won the best acting Oscar for “Raging Bull.” The film depicted the story of Bronxite Jake LaMotta, the world champion boxer. This is only a small sample of the Bronx-Oscar connection.

and repetition, the memory rather than the precise visual representation. Joan Levine’s vibrant watercolors depict landscapes in which unearthly botanicals and bizarre creatures come to visit to tell their stories. Aija Sears is a trained botanical artist and is exploring a wider range of subject matter as well as using objects from nature and seeing where their organic shapes lead her hand in varied media. Gloria Karlson exhibits her oils and drawings regularly and describes her work: ‘My personal library of black and white photographs serve as inspiration for my paintings.’ The artists are members of the Riverdale Art Association and invite the community to this exciting exhibit and to meetings of the Riverdale Art Association. The Riverdale Art Association is a group of local artists who also welcome the community and new members at its meetings. Meetings are the second Tuesday of the month at 7 p.m. in the Community Room at the Riverdale Atria, Henry Hudson Parkway East, just south of the Monument. Death of a Veterinarian
Some months ago, we were approached by friends of Dr. Shirley Koshi, a local veterinarian. She was in some sort of dispute with a local resident over the custody of a stray cat. This was getting her what they felt was unfair publicity in a competitor’s newspaper, The Riverdale Press, which they told us was hounding her over what they described as false charges. After forty years in this business, we think we have developed a sense of what merits coverage and what doesn’t. Some things just seem too petty, too parochial, to be dragged into the public domain. That’s what happens when you are covered in the press. Your business becomes everyone’s business. We looked at this and judged this to be the kind of dispute that would be better left to Judge Wapner or Judge Judy. While it may be of some interest to some people, who is to say where the truth lies in a dispute over a stray cat? We were asked to intervene, because someone else did think it was worthy of coverage. In the final analysis we were both wrong. The Riverdale Press was wrong to open this Pandora’s Box of bad feelings and stupidity, things that were too petty for public review, and we were wrong for not coming to Dr. Koshi’s aid when she was thus unfairly victimized. Dr. Koshi killed herself last week, which earned her the only coverage that was really newsworthy. We feel terrible. She needed a friend, someone to say enough already. We failed her, and we regret our inaction. Let’s hope that someone from the Long Island-based Riverdale Press feels as bad about Dr. Koshi’s suicide as we do.
Israel’s Crooked Lawyer Courtesy of the New York Sun
That’s the phrase the Financial Times is using to describe America on the morning of the meeting between President Obama and Prime Minister Netanyahu. The FT fears the United States is “planning to hand Israel” what it characterizes as “almost all the settlement blocks colonizing Palestinian land; about three-quarters of occupied East Jerusalem; and the Jordan Valley.” Says the FT: “Perhaps Mr. Kerry is managing expectations with great acuity. If not, any such prospectus would put an end to the two-state proposition and expose the US as Israel’s crooked lawyer rather than an honest broker.” What the FT seems to mean by ‘managing expectations with great acuity’ is what Ambrose Bierce meant when he said a diplomat is someone who is paid to lie for his country. In other words, if Mr. Kerry is lying, America is an honest broker. If Mr. Kerry is telling the truth, America is a crook. So what does that make the Financial Times? It is a newspaper whose founding (and greatest) editor, Brendan Bracken, was at one point an aide to Churchill and deputized “to maintain close contact with the Zionist leaders on his behalf,” as it is phrased in “Weizmann: A Biography by Several Hands.” How the FT moved from the goodwill at the heart of the Churchill-Zionist collaboration to such unsavory sentiments, well, it is a question for the historians of journalism. For the rest of us, the idea that the FT represents what passes for mainstream European sentiment today is something to think about in the Age of Obama, when we were supposed to discover that all the ill-feeling in Europe was a reaction to President Bush and that once he was gone and Mr. Obama came in, all would be made well. What malarky. We’re now nearing the three-quarters mark of the Obama presidency. All the president’s leaning on Israel — on such clear display in Washington this week — has begat nothing but more hostility. Something for Israel’s next “lawyer” to remember.
Thanks to Senator Klein To The Editor: I am writing to express my appreciation to Senator Klein’s office for help with a recent problem. For over a week I had no phone/internet service from Verizon. I was finally able to arrange for a tech person to resolve
To The Editor: Your February 13th Opinion article “Truth or Unintended Consequences” points out that the DeBlasio administration might pass the proposed ban on carriage horses, New York City’s noble steeds might end up as horse meat and their drivers might be forced to join the swelling ranks of our city’s

unemployed. Frankly, I’m shocked that your paper didn’t consider an alternate outcome. Mainly, that should the proposed ban pass, many jobs might be created and our carriage horses be saved. Let’s look at the burgeoning pedal cab industry in New York. Human power provides transportation
for so many tourists. Surely, our carriage horses could be replaced by a team of four to six humans. One could possibly be the displaced driver. Furthermore, our city leaders could create a petting zoo for the retired horses. I doubt that animal rights advocates would oppose such a measure. Nat Solomon
