Biographical Note:
Louis E. Cooke (1850 – 1923) was a showman who worked as an advance, press and general agent for major outdoor entertainment organizations including Adam Forepaugh, Barnum & Bailey, Buffalo Bill's Wild West, Miller Bros. 101 Ranch Wild West, Pawnee Bill’s Wild West, Frank A. Robbins, and W.W. Cole. He played a crucial role as the formal representative and personal confidante for every leading showman with whom he was associated. Cooke also owned the Continental Hotel in Newark, New Jersey. In retirement, he was a prolific writer on the circus with his articles appearing in newspapers and magazines. Cooke also had a hand in an early motorized circus. Working with his daughter, Viola, he was writing a book about his life in the circus, entitled Circus Life and History.
