Growing up in an exclusively Chinese-speaking family and without formal debate training, Alfred consistently ranked among the top ten speakers in Asia. He has employed his unique experiences and self-taught techniques to train multiple championship-winning school teams in Singapore. He hopes to make debate an accessible sport for everyone.

With years of success debating as an underdog in the circuit, Reuben has mastered the secret to defying the odds. He now puts that knowledge to good use, grooming top dogs in schools without established records in the competitive scene. Reuben served as the Director (Competitions and Training) of the Debate Association (Singapore) from 2017-2019.

She is also a volunteer teacher for after-school community programs and has nurtured many primary and secondary school students under her care.

Passionate about sharing his newfound debate knowledge, he also coaches schools in debating and served as the Training Director for his school debate society.

What sets the debaters apart in their journey is what they choose to do with those skills. Most people will leave the world of competitive debating once they enter adulthood.

They each struggled with the lack of resources and opportunities that were reserved for those who had already established themselves in the circuit from a young age. This meant that those who were already good would keep getting better while the rest were left behind.

Luckily for their students who would benefit later on in their lives, they chose to grit their teeth and work their way up independently.

The blog gained international popularity for its candid takes on issues that offered useful perspectives and information for fledgling debaters. They agreed that this was a positive sign for a more sustainable venture.

They hunkered down to work on their very first iteration of a collective of coaching strategies, which would later form the basis of their coaching pedagogy and core curriculum.

At one of these tournaments, Alfred and Reuben finally met, and they became fast friends. Over many late night suppers after a long day of competing, they would share heartfelt conversations on their journeys past and their hopes for the future.

They discovered their common vision for debating to become an accessible skill for all.

As they were both coaching schools in competitive debating, they frequently had long spirited discussions on case preparation, motion analysis, and debating strategies. The result of which was their schools going from newcomers to dominating the national championships.

WHAT OUR STUDENTS AND THEIR PARENTS SAY Zelin Chin, 9 Zelin joined The Rhetoric Collective’s Junior Class in 2020 as we believe it is important to develop critical thinking and communication skills from an early age. Since then, Zelin has become much more confident and competent in assessing issues, formulating her opinion, and engaging in dialogue. The Rhetoric Collective played a large part in her growth. Teachers Alfred Goh and Cherylyn Wee are extremely patient and nurturing, providing a conducive environment for Zelin to learn. Su Let Yati Soe, 19 Alfred is a highly effective and passionate coach. When he teaches, it is clear to anybody in the room that he enjoys debating and he has the know-how. After 3 years of being his student, one thing that amazes me is how he always knows the right strategy to use in teaching his students, regardless of whether they’re young or old and irrespective of their experience. Because of his experience and enjoyment in the sport, his training plans are always carefully detailed and accompanied by extensive feedback. Shae Grunde, 11 My daughter greatly enjoys her debate classes at Rhetoric Collective. She finds the trainers very engaging and each session to be fun and interesting. She likes the small class size - this lets her connect with the trainer/students and learn debate skills in a supportive class environment.

Students are first guided to explore different viewpoints on current issues and then taught the debate and oratory skills to structure their own arguments/discussion. My child now feels more confident about public speaking and is better equipped to discuss current affairs. She also feels comfortable with thinking on the spot and improvising during discussions.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN DEBATE AND PUBLIC SPEAKING? A common misconception people have is that debating and public speaking are the same.

While both are indeed centered on 'speaking', that's where the similarity ends. Debating requires a far more complex set of skills because of what is demanded of the speaker.

As the intention of debating is to persuade, the speech needs to demonstrate a structured and systematic analysis of arguments. The same is not expected of public speaking, which is likened to 'storytelling' where a narrative is shared to entertain the audience.

Regardless of their external activities, learners can continue sharpening their skills with us without the stress of their teammates or coach evaluating them.

When students are given more opportunities, they get greater exposure to a variety of topics. They learn more and stay ahead of the curve in the competitive debating world.

Additionally, our team comprises world-class coaches who have championship-winning experience, have worked with the Ministry of Education to organise tournaments, and have been invited to judge and teach internationally. Their cumulative practical experience ensures that whatever is taught is not merely theoretical or imagined but is always grounded in globally recognised standards of excellence.

HOW DO I KNOW IF MY CHILD SHOULD JOIN DEBATE? The learners who do best in debating are those who display a curiosity about the world, and have the stamina to keep going.

They are not necessarily those who are outwardly 'talented' but are interested in developing their skills and growing.

It might be challenging to figure out whether your child is ready to learn such a skill. Our classes are a convenient test for children to experience debate in a low-risk, less stressful environment with good opportunities to train regularly. We can cultivate an interest in thinking critically in a more fun and interactive way than a traditional school setting allows for. This is why we are popular with parents who are keen to explore debating for their children.

Unlike school debating clubs, where it can feel overly competitive or stifling, our students can explore freely and experiment with new and better ways of debating without fear.

HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE FOR MY CHILD TO LEARN DEBATING AS A SKILL?

Mastering this skill is not going to happen in a set number of lessons. In fact, very few people will ever truly master this skill and no longer need to practise or continue honing their craft. Anyone who tries to tell you otherwise is not being totally honest with you.

Debating is a skill many have accepted as a lifelong investment. As we age, we gain more knowledge, mature in our thinking, and evolve further in our skills. We unlock new ways to refine our speeches to continue persuading audiences who have also grown older and become more challenging.

Does this mean I should not bother starting with this skill if I do not intend to hone it for life? Definitely not. Just like how learning to cycle often means you retain the basic skill for life, your child too will do better than before in their critical thinking and persuasive skills as long as they have trained for some time.

The question of when you have learnt enough of the skill, is whether you are confident that it will be sufficient for future life stages as you navigate new challenges and opportunities.

At our first meeting with students and their parents (Read more about our Diagnostic Session on Page 31), we discuss their goals which will set the direction for what they wish to gain from our classes. Throughout their time with us, we then also continually explore their evolving needs and adjust our recommendations to stay relevant and effective. This helps our students answer the question on when they are satisfied with the level of skills they have obtained.

We have a maximum ratio of 1 coach to 8 students for group classes to ensure sufficient individual attention and engagement.

Foundational Theories:

Our learners are not just taught how to do something but why they are doing something. The theories shared allows them to understand how strategies work so they can internalise the lesson and learn to adapt their skills to any scenario.

With at least 50% of our senior classes, and 80% of junior classes filled with activities, our learners can actively put their skills to the test and develop their voice as they process and perform.

SARAH'S JOURNEY WITH US Here is an example of how a student may grow with us through the years.

Age 12

Beginning Sarah attends a Diagnostic Session to meet the trainers and have her skills evaluated

Sarah is Primary 6 and is taking the Primary School Leaving Examinations this year.

She still attends the Junior Class as she finds it a fun activity that she looks forward to. She even adds on some extra Personal Coaching classes to help with her Direct School Admission interviews.

Age 10-11 Sarah joins the Junior Class and attends the sessions every week.

She occasionally takes a break during her exam weeks or when she is busy with her school CCA.

Age 13-14 Sarah is in Secondary School and now attends the Senior Class. She finds the sessions useful as they help her be more confident in class presentations and in writing argumentative essays.

She tries out for the Debate CCA and makes the Junior School Team.

And beyond When attending university and even as a working professional, Sarah engages us for adhoc sessions when she needs a skilled coach for important presentations or interviews.

Age 15-17 Sarah joins the Advanced Sparring class to prepare for debate tournaments that she is representing the school in.

When she advances to Junior College, she also finds the sessions useful in helping her understand how to write her General Paper essays.

DIAGNOSTIC SESSION We meet potential students in a Diagnostic Session to evaluate how we can best partner the student and parents. We learn more about the student's current abilities and their goals for the future before recommending our learning solutions.

Prepared Speech Prior to the session, we will provide a topic for the student to prepare a short speech on. This allows the student to showcase their current methods and abilities for speech and argumentation.

Question and Response We will ask the student follow up questions based on their speech to better understand their thought process, depth of argumentation, and confidence in what they have prepared.

Goals Parents and student may share their goals for general enrichment or development, or specific learning objectives. They can also discuss challenges or fears they are grappling with.

Parents are encouraged to ask questions during the Diagnostic Session to help them better understand how to partner us in their child's learning journey!

TYPES OF CLASSES Choose from our different types of classes to suit your learning needs, timeframe, and goals. From personalised coaching to group classes, each one provides a different environment for students to feel comfortable learning.

PERSONAL COACHING (1-TO-1) 1-to-1 lessons are recommended if you have a specific goal within a short timeframe, or if you prefer dedicated classes tailored to your learning needs. Choose a time that's best for you instead of our group class schedule.

Personal classes are also a good supplement to group training sessions, with additional time and space to work on specific drills and exercises. Unlike a group class, the coach will be the sparring partner for this class, allowing for a higher level of interactivity and personal feedback.

JUNIOR CLASS (AGES 9-12) Our junior classes are focused on building confidence in our young ones while also introducing them to good speaking habits.

At this age group, almost the entire session (80%) is activity-based to maintain a fun and active environment for sustainable longterm learning.

SENIOR CLASS (AGES 13-17) As our students mature, we will introduce them to higher order skills that they can explore and experiment within our classes.

Foundational theories are explained in greater depth for a more nuanced understanding, but we still balance this with activities (50%) so they can practise.

ADVANCED SPARRING (AGES 13-17) At this age group, we have some students enter the world of competitive debating exposing them to diverse audiences to sharpen their skills further.

In our advanced sparring class, they learn practical strategies, tournament dynamics, and advanced topics so that they can be competition-ready.
