Hoyo de Monterrey was the first brand to introduce a Petit Robusto in 2005, the 50 ring gauge size with a shorter length to suit those who like thicker formats, but do not always have the time to enjoy them. We think they’re definitely a cigar to be smoked with at least 6 months age.

Fox & Fox Inspiration Brut NV. Party drinks, aperitifs, that New Year’s toast – this is the season that calls for fizz. Rather than that endlessly regifted bottle of cheap Champagne, this year we’re opting for Inspiration by Fox & Fox, a small producer in the heart of Sussex’s High Weald.

Like most English sparkling wine, this is produced in the same manner as Champagne for a toasty, textural sensation and a very soft mousse. But Gerard and Jonica, the husband and wife team behind the label, mix things up by predominantly using Pinot Gris with just a dash of Chardonnay to lengthen the finish. The result is beguiling – pure, bright flavours of lemon curd and plum with a delicate, floral undertone and a bass line of rich brioche.

We love it in so many situations, but a glass of Inspiration and a smoked salmon canape is close to heaven for me. £39.00

My pick is a single vineyard selection from California. While Napa is famed for big, bruising reds, the Santa Rita Hills area offers a cooler climate for more elegant wines. Here you have the best of both worlds: plush cherry and raspberry complemented by the soft spicebox quality of French oak, but with a nervy, juicy finish thanks to the cool breezes and night-time picking. It’s lip-smacking to the casual drinker and alluringly complex to the connoisseur - the perfect red for a crowd. £47.50

Acidity that keeps the palate fresh even in the throes of festive overeating. Complexity so that none of the myriad side dishes will butt against an angular wine. This list, in practice means I’m drinking Burgundy.

This year I’ve turned to one of France’s most famous villages, Meursault, for a wine that ticks every box. As ever with Meursault, there’s a rich buttery texture, but a good fresh finish leaves plenty of room for fresh tropical fruit notes, yellow apple and fresh peach. A lick of smoky, toasty oak adds further dimension to this grand but elegant wine.

DĂŁo Tinto is produced by Niepoort from their Quinta da Lomba estate in the DĂŁo region of northern Portugal. The wine is made from sixty year old vines, and is then aged for 12 months in cement to create a wine of abundant black fruit with a poised finish. A great match for all red meats.

It has hints of wild berries, dark flowers, and black spices with a velvety finish, but with a strong nerve that softens in the future years of aging.
