(as well as The Raintree on the inside front cover) of The Restaurant Times magazine are all members of the St. Augustine Independent Restaurant Association, or SAiRA, founded in October 2007. Our goal is to bring you culinary diversity in a cultural atmosphere that will leave a lasting memory. Since our inception we have strived to bring our member restaurants together as a group and promote locally owned and operated businesses.

As a group, we strive to support other local businesses and our community with sponsorship of local fundraisers and participation in ongoing cultural events.

In 2010, we launched our own event—SAiRA’s Food & Wine Festival, a showcase of member restaurants and extensive wine tasting event. It’s the perfect way to sample St. Augustine’s best independent restaurants all in one place and all proceeds go to benefit The Boys and Girls Club of St. Augustine.

This annual event, scheduled for Sunday, October 1 at the River House from noon to 4 p.m., has become a popular draw for visitors and residents alike, so make plans right away to attend! We look forward to welcoming you to our restaurants!

Carcaba, growing up in his family’s business, Carcaba Electric, lunch at Cheese Wheel and Sandwich Board, the neighborhood sandwich shop, FwasorThaeCasey highlight of the day. Now, Casey owns it!

Casey learned how to run the family electric company from his father and grandfather. He learned the restaurant trade from local icons at O.C. White’s, Saltwater Cowboys, Fiddler’s Green and Creekside Dinery. Casey saw firsthand what it takes to run a successful business and how to diversify his talents.

In 2014, he was busy running the family electric company when he heard The Cheese Wheel was closing. After 30 years of serving delicious sandwiches, longtime owner Antje Hesson was retiring, and Casey offered to buy it. Now located at 223 W. King Street, The Cheese Wheel serves delicious breakfasts and lunch. This year they won Taste of St. Augustine’s “Best Family Restaurant,” with their hot pressed classic Cuban piled high with Owner Casey Carcaba thinly shaved pork loin, ham and Swiss cheese with Datil mustard and pickles. Other favorites include the Turkey Ryder and new hot items: the Rachel, a grilled Reuben with turkey, Chicken Parmigiana and Philly Cheese Steak.

Casual Dining • Historic Location • Celebrating 35 Years he story of the Raintree Restaurant reads a little T bit like a romantic novel.

On March 30, 1979, the MacDonald family, consisting of father and mother, Tristan and Alex, and son Gaere, and daughter Lorna, left England in their 45-foot yacht, Intsholo III, Jeff Keane, Matt Berg, Chris Cantabene bound for the United States, Zach Fraser, Ersh Beck, Lorna MacDonald just as their countrymen had done in the 17th century, and for just about the same reason. After selling everything—business, house, cars, and most of their furniture—they said goodbye to Europe and friends. At 5 p.m. on Nov. 7, 1979, they left the safety of the Canaries for the open Atlantic.

The crossing took nearly 18 days before Intsholo III anchored at Bridgetown, Barbados. The next step was across to Florida and then north to St. Augustine, where the MacDonalds found the old house at 102 San Marco Avenue that became The Raintree after 10 months of restorations and refurbishment. This century-old building is one of the last survivors of the city’s Victorian heyday.

Since opening in 1981, The Raintree continues to be recognized nationally and internationally as one of Florida’s top destination restaurants. The warm, inviting ambience of the restored 1879 home—and brick courtyard, gazebos and koi ponds surrounding it—provide the perfect setting for memorable dining and special events. The menu features hand-cut prime steaks, fresh local seafood, chef’s specials and handcrafted desserts, notably made-to-order French crêpes. Specialties such as the Brandy Peppersteak and Beef Wellington have put the restaurant on the map of gourmands the world over. Heading south on A1A Beach Boulevard you will find La Cocina International Restaurant within the elegant Castillo Real Hotel on your left and Zaba’s, a casual coffee shop and eatery on your right (at the A Street Beach Access Intersection). At the end of A Street, you’ll discover the Beachcomber Restaurant, which has an enviable location right on the beach. The historic district’s main thoroughfare is St. George Street, which from the city gates to the plaza, is blocked off for pedestrian-only traffic. Pizzalley’s and The Chianti Room offer pizza and Italian fare, while The Bull & Crown Publick House and Taberna del Caballo in The Colonial Quarter, an immersive living history experience, offer themed dining in the heart of the city.
