Two Horsham pupils achieved FIFTEEN A* or A grades each as youngsters celebrated GCSE success across the district. Will Earley, from The Forest School, and Louise North, of Tanbridge House School, were among the star performers on a day of outstanding results. Forest pupils recorded the school’s best-ever results. Head boy Dan Mannion, Ben Garry, Sean McDiarmid, Matt Cole and Dylan Marshall all achieved 12 A*/A grades, and Nick Cox 11 A*/A. Head teacher Siobhan Denning said: “Many staff were in school with me for results day and shared my delight in seeing the smiles of joy and pride lighting up the faces of our pupils as they opened their envelopes. “We value highly the positive relationships we build with our pupils here at Forest and their individual success means a great deal to all the staff. “I am very proud of the achievement of all our pupils. However, I would like to mention one very special pupil – Will Earley. Not only did he achieve the impressive clutch of A* grades mentioned above, he actually got many of them in Years 9 and 10. “On top of that, he sat his Maths A level with us two years early and achieved the top grade. Fare increase ‘will improve our trains’ Train operators have defended an average increase in season ticket prices of eight per cent from January. David Mapp, of the Association of Train Operating Companies (ATOC), which includes Southern, said: “The government has decided that many fares need to rise above inflation for the next three years to help pay for more trains, better stations and faster services. “Increasing the money raised from fares will mean that taxpayers contribute less to the running of the railways, while ensuring vital investment can continue. “The industry is working with the government to cut the cost of running the railways, building on the progress that has already been made. “A more efficient railway will help to limit fare rises in the future and offer better long-term value for money for the taxpayer.” ATOC says fares have risen at a significantly slower rate since privatisation than during the last 15 years of British Rail. Mr Mapp added: “Over the past 10 years, the average fare actually paid by passengers has consistently fallen below the headline increases in fares, as passengers have increasingly switched to buying cheaper fares, such as Advance tickets. “Train companies are making more and more cheap tickets available. Passengers have become more aware of their options.”

people in our society, stealing their savings and ruining their lives. “Thanks to this multi-agency investigation, their international boilerroom fraud has been dismantled and they are facing several years behind bars. “The evolving nature of fraud sees British criminals increasingly trying to hide their operations in foreign countries and siphon off their profits using a myriad of global bank accounts. “To counter this threat – and ensure all fraudsters can be traced – demands national and international collaboration between an expanding circle of organisations from different sectors, an approach to which the City of London Police and the FSA are 100 per cent committed.” Tracey McDermott, the FSA’s acting director of enforcement, said: “This was a highly sophisticated scam that made use of offshore structures to launder the funds, put distance between the Wilmots and the boiler rooms, and ultimately disguise the nature of the business. “What started out as a UK-based FSA investigation had to evolve into a joint, then global, operation to bring the perpetrators to justice. “The individuals convicted sought to cloak their activities within an aura of respectability to deceive investors, many of whom were vulnerable or elderly. “They are nothing more than coldhearted criminals who profited from stealing other people’s money.”

A family of fraudsters was jailed for a total of 19 years for a boilerroom fraud that took £27.5 million from up to 1,700 investors. Kevin Wilmot, 43, of Langhurstwood Road, Horsham, and brother Christopher Wilmot, 42, of St Leonards Road, Horsham, were sentenced to five years each. Their 64-year-old father, Tomas Wilmot, of Westwood Lane, Guildford, was said to be the ringleader of the operation and got nine years. All three had been convicted of conspiracy to defraud following a long and detailed investigation by the City of London Police, the Financial Services Authority (FSA) and Eurojust. The Wilmots controlled a syndicate of 16 boiler rooms that sold millions of low-value, worthless and sometimes non-existent shares to victims in the UK. Many of the victims were elderly and some suffered from serious illnesses. Most of the boiler rooms were based in Spain, but the back office, accounts and companies used in the operation were from Malta, Italy, Slovakia, Lithuania, Austria, Andorra, Brazil, Belize, Dubai and a number of Caribbean islands. The investigation into the trio was prompted by searches conducted in relation to another boiler room investigation in late 2007. In May 2009, 93 City of London Police and FSA investigators carried out a series of co-ordinated searches at the home addresses of the suspects in

Guildford and Horsham, and at their office in Bramley. About 67,000 documents were seized, along with 48 digital items such as computer hard drives and other storage devices. The Wilmots were charged in June 2009 and went to trial in May this year. By the time the case reached the courts, investigators had produced 21,000 documents in evidence and 350 witness statements, including 85 from victims of the boiler rooms.

You deprived many individual investors of substantial amounts of money. “For some, that was money they could not afford to give up. Roar enthusiasm A life-size statue of a lion travelled 6,000 miles from Horsham to South Africa to become part of Pride of Cape Town, a major public art event. The statue left the Born Free Foundation office in Foundry Lane and was flown from London Heathrow by South African Airways, the country’s national airline. It will become the mould for 50 other lion statues that will take to the Waterfront in Cape Town as part of a free art exhibition from February next year. Individually decorated by local artists and sponsored by local companies, the statues will form part of a trail to raise cultural awareness in the city. The initiative will also profile the plight of wild lions that remain the iconic image of Africa but are seriously under threat from their loss of habitat and trophy hunting. Each of the lions will be auctioned in Cape Town in April, with proceeds going to the Born Free Foundation.

Waitrose raided Burglars took cigarettes from Waitrose, Old Mill Square, Storrington. Police attended the shop at 2.50am on Friday last week after an alarm went off. Sgt Mark Miller said: “We believe the offenders may have been two men. Council’s U-turn over 150 homes

Sadly this remains a hospital which is not offering an acceptable level of service. “The ambulance service does a great job and is constantly trying to improve, but the emergency service provided to Southwater is just about the worst anywhere in Surrey and Sussex. “They only reach 44 per cent of real emergencies within the government target time of eight minutes. The national target is to reach 75 per cent within this time. This factor alone should preclude further major development in this area. “The Berkeley application will do nothing to create employment in the village. The claim that 100 to 150 permanent jobs will be created by the secondary school is total nonsense – there is no proposal to build such a school! “The reality is that nearly all the people who would buy houses in this area will work outside it. A dormitory town will be created with the attendant problems of at least 750 extra cars. “Berkeleys consistently refuse to say what percentage of affordable houses they will actually provide if this development were to be given approval. This is totally unacceptable. “Modern sustainable development is supposed to facilitate travel without a car. There is no serious availability of a train service as a means of transport. “The station at Christ’s Hospital is down very small roads, is without any bus link to Southwater and already has a major parking problem in the road leading down to it.”

A 19-year-old man from Horsham died when the Vauxhall Corsa he was driving was involved in a collision with a HGV lorry. The tragedy happened on the A27 at Arundel, between the town’s station and Crossbush, at 7.10am yesterday (Thursday). The teenager was released by firefighters and received immediate medical treatment but died at the scene. As The Resident went to press yesterday evening, Sussex Police had not yet named the victim. Plans for 150 homes, which were initially refused by Horsham District Council, look set to be approved after all. In February, the council rejected A2 Dominion Homes’ scheme for Marringdean Road, Billingshurst. But the developers appealed against the decision and a public inquiry will be held between September 6 and September 9. Councillors originally refused planning application on the grounds that the development was premature because of the council’s intention to pursue a planned approach to housing development – the so-called interim statement approach.

Local members ‘reluctantly accepted this decision ’

After people in Billingshurst and Southwater overwhelmingly rejected this approach, the district council decided not to proceed with the interim statement and work on it stopped. The council says this means the main reason given for the refusal of the planning application – prematurity – is now indefensible and the other reasons given are not sustainable by themselves. The development control committee therefore agreed the council would not defend the appeal, so as to avoid “unnecessary costs”. Cllr Gordon Lindsay, district councillor for Billingshurst and Shipley, said: “Local members reluctantly accepted this decision but felt the extra

homes will not address the fundamental issues concerning the viability of the village centre.” A full meeting of Horsham District Council will receive a report and be requested to confirm this decision on September 7. The council says it is negotiating an agreement to secure contributions for local facilities and affordable housing. Meanwhile, pressure group Keep Southwater Green (KSG) has stepped up its campaign against Berkeley Homes’ plan for 550 houses west of Worthing Road, Southwater, which KSG claims would “open the floodgates for ongoing large development on this site”. Group spokesman Ian Thwaites said: “We believe this wanton destruction of farmland and rural environment must be opposed. “Southwater is a pleasant place to live. Ask the question ‘why did you choose to live in Southwater?’ and it is not employment or schools that is the answer. It is that it is a green, pleasant place with a semi-rural character. This will be destroyed. “Southwater has taken a great deal of development already over the last 20 years. “It is unreasonable to say that Southwater already has the facilities and must bear the development. The facilities we have relate to the previous development, not to the projected one. “The farmland to the west of the Worthing Road, Great House Farm in particular, protects the environment and is a vital part of the amenity of the village. “We currently import 40 per cent

of our food. This percentage has to come down if we are to ensure we can feed ourselves in turbulent economic times. We cannot simply go on concreting over farmland. “Berkeleys imply that water supply and foul water and sewerage disposal present no problem and that there is no flood risk. This is totally wrong. “Southern Water has already notified Horsham District Council that the proposed development cannot be covered by existing supply and sewerage facilities. “Berkeleys say the healthcare facilities are good and able to sustain further development. This is totally untrue. “The GP surgery was built after the last development and has limited capacity to take more patients. “For most specialist care we depend on the new East Surrey at

Tragedy as teen dies

Man robbed A man was robbed in Redkiln Road, Horsham, at about 1pm on Tuesday. He was approached by a man who asked for the time. When the victim looked at his watch, the man held a sharp weapon against his throat and demanded he hand over money. The robber took cash before running into York Close then past the garages behind Stuart House. Det Con Graham Milner said: “We are treating this distressing crime as an isolated incident. “This took place near the junction with York Close, not far from the Tesco Express. If you were in the area at the time of the robbery and saw any suspicious behaviour, or think you recognise the distinctive description of the suspect, contact police immediately.” The robber is described as white, 6ft 4in and skinny, with gaunt features, bags under his eyes and short cropped light brown hair. He was wearing a black hooded top with white writing down one shoulder, light grey jeans and white trainers with black laces. Hunting charges Four men, including three from Horsham district, appeared in court on hunting charges yesterday (Thursday). Henry James Hawksfield, 58, of Bines Road, Partridge Green, Rachel Holdsworth, of Rock Road, Washington, Neil Millard, 44, of Dragons Lane, Shipley, and Andrew Phillis, 50, of Totnes, Devon, were summonsed to appear at Crawley Magistrates’ Court to face four charges. They are alleged to have breached Section 1 of the Hunting Act 2004 at meets of the Crawley and Horsham Hunt – in Southwater on January 18, in Shermanbury on January 25 and in Twineham and Shermanbury on February 15. The case was expected to be adjourned.

Police are looking at CCTV footage in a bid to discover if a huge fire at a fuel depot was started deliberately. Dozens of residents nearby were evacuated while more than 50 firefighters tackled the blaze at Four Seasons Fuel, Coneyhurst, from about 10pm last Friday.

A spokesman for Sussex Police revealed: “We are in receipt of CCTV and will be viewing it. There is still no indication of how the fire started.” The inferno destroyed a building used to house bio diesel. A cordon was set up 600m from the site and roads including part of the A272 remained closed until early on Saturday afternoon. A woman who lives nearby said: “It was just like looking at some crime scene through the window. The road was lined with fire engines and police cars. Police helicopters were flying overhead. “There was a great big glow of orange behind a huge evergreen tree outside our window. I didn’t believe what I was seeing.

“It’s quite shocking in a tiny, sleepy hamlet. They’re like unexploded bombs, so I’m not terribly happy with the situation.” Paul Berry, chairman of Billingshurst Parish Council, said: “The emergency plans of both Horsham District Council and Billingshurst Parish Council were put into operation. “This involved opening up Billingshurst Community and Conference Centre (formally Billingshurst Village Hall) to allow it to be used as an evacuation centre for residents. “Upon arriving at the hall at around 12.30am, parish clerk Beverley Bell was met by a team from Sussex Police and Horsham District Council. Between them they assisted just under 30 local residents who had needed to leave their homes. “At around 8.15am all of the residents affected had left the hall and operations were wound down there. “The emergency plan worked very well and I am grateful for the professionalism and teamwork shown by Horsham District Council, Sussex Police and Mrs Bell. “I must of course also thank West Sussex Fire and Rescue for their response and bringing the incident under control as soon as possible and for the assistance given to local residents by the Selsey Arms in Coolham. “When getting together emergency plans, everybody’s main hope is that they will never be needed. However, Saturday’s incident proves that by having some plans in place, local

authorities can assist the emergency services and members of the public at such times.” After being evacuated to the community centre, a male resident told BBC Sussex: “We were greeted by some absolutely fantastic people who did everything they could to make sure we were safe. “All the fire services and the Red Cross were extremely concerned for our safety. “Clearly, there is room for a viable business providing fuels and gas and all of those things here because we need them. We are out in the sticks and we haven’t got the mainline services. “But assistance needs to be given to Four Seasons in terms of making sure that things going forward are safe.”

working with Sussex Police, to set up a safety cordon to ensure public and firefighter safety.” Insp Paul Williams, of Sussex Police, said of the incident: “This has caused major disruption and upheaval and I should like to thank everyone affected for their co-operation and patience. “Thankfully, nobody was injured and people returned safely to their homes.” The Resident approached Four Seasons Fuel for a reaction, but the company refused to comment. A statement on the family-run company’s website, this week told customers: “Four Seasons Fuel Ltd was unfortunately subject to a fire on Friday night. “As a result we are no longer able to produce or sell bio diesel or any oil products as this area of our business unfortunately took the brunt of the fire. “We are, however, happy to say that this unforeseen circumstance has not affected our other products and we remain fully open for the sale of gas, firewood, kindling, charcoal, house/ boiler coal and cast iron stoves. “We would like to thank you for your valued custom and support during this difficult time.” Anyone with information about the fire can contact police on 0845 6070999, quoting Operation Quint, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.

John Alexander Taylor, of Lordings Road, Billingshurst, is accused of fraud by false representation between May 2009 and February this year. The offences are alleged to have taken place in Horsham, Southampton, Liphook in Hampshire, Kingston Gorse and Petersfield. Mr Taylor is due to appear at Crawley Magistrates’ Court on Thursday next week, September 1.

Fire open day Firefighters at Billingshurst will hold an open day between midday and 4pm tomorrow (Saturday). Richard Betts, Billingshurst watch manager, said: “Ordinarily, the only time people see their local fire crew is in an emergency situation, so this is a great way to find out more about the work we do. “If we can combine important fire and road safety messages and advice with exciting displays and activities, then we’re giving people a good day out and hopefully making our local community safer.” Admission is free, with any proceeds donated to the Fire Fighters Charity.

Horsham’s Making a Difference appeal. The Rotary Club was contacted by Donna Betts, a personal adviser with Connexions, who is employed by West Sussex Youth Service and has been supporting 16-year-old Vikki since June. She said: “I applied for the money because Vikki is a very deserving young person who has some personal issues in that her mum is terminally ill. “Vikki has gained a place in the Level 2 riding course at Brinsbury College, but having these lessons at Albourne will give her a chance to brush up on her riding skills and do something she enjoys.” Vikki, who has just left Steyning Grammar School, told The Resident: “Donna rang me and told my mum Dawn, who told me about the riding lessons. “I was really happy and my mum was so pleased because she knows it’s something I love. I don’t know why, but I’ve liked horses pretty much all of my life. I suppose it’s a kind of adrenaline rush and it’s good to be outside. “I would like to thank the Rotary Club because I probably wouldn’t be

able to afford this otherwise. “It was amazing to get the money and the lessons will make a lot of difference. Now I’m doing dressage, which is really good and all about being accurate.” Dave Smith, of the Rotary Club, said: “This is just the kind of appeal we set up the scheme for. “As well as helping Vikki with this, over the past few weeks the scheme has helped fund extra private lessons for a young boy suffering from dyslexia, supplied school uniforms for single parents with financial or health problems, helped a local family support charity with emergency funding, supplied a washing machine to a young man who had experienced problems and supplied games for a charity fundraising event. “Twenty other good local causes have had their appeals for help achieved. We are working on another 15 appeals and expect to bring these to fruition in the next few weeks. “Of course there have been appeals that we have had to decline and others that take longer to achieve than we would like, mostly due to funding. “The Rotary Club has a certain amount dedicated to the Making a

Your readers will feel indebted to Ms Katie Arthur for her etymology in defining the word ’anarchy’ for us (The Resident, August 19). Unfortunately, according to the Oxford Concise Dictionary, she produced a somewhat selective version of the definition. As Ms Arthur indicated, anarchy is the doctrine that all government should be abolished and, where such exists, activity to bring about that state. However, without indicating a link to this, that august tome also states that anarchy is straightforward “political or social disorder”, so perhaps the red tops are not so ignorant after all! Ms Arthur also offers the opinion that, since the downfall of the government was not central to the recent riots, they cannot be construed as anarchic. This is her opinion and something she cannot possibly know for sure. True, no government office or the apparatus of government was involved, but the one thing that she and (to be fair) most people failed to acknowledge two weeks ago is that these riots had the imprint of planning. London is a very large city where 6,000 policemen might be adequate to police a law-abiding society. But until the riots, who knew how many it would take to quell riots across the city and how long it would take to deploy them? A blue touch-paper lit in Tottenham was followed by disorder in Hackney in the east, then Ealing in the far west, then Croydon, about as far south as you can go and still be in Greater London The police were hauled all over London to fight the mobs and, unsurprisingly, they didn’t have the resources. Vital information. Then again, how did white vans suddenly appear as if from nowhere with what were reported as steal-toorder lists? Again, redolent of planning and pre-knowledge. The wanton setting of major fires has more in common with the activity we saw in the anti-globalisation riots than with protesting, disaffected youth. Among the many things that have been levelled at today’s young ‘underclass’ is that they lack respect – for authority, for the police, for their teachers, for their parents and, ultimately, for themselves. To some extent, Ms Arthur mirrors this. To you, Ms Arthur, the Prime Minister is addressed as Mr Cameron. Similarly, it is seen to be acceptable to address Baroness Thatcher merely as “Thatcher”, because she had the guts to do what Harold Wilson and James Callaghan didn’t. She requires her full title if for no other reason than that she is not guilty of the charges you seem intent on levelling at her. It is true that she saw it as desirable that people stand on their own two feet and fight the all-too-pervasive temptation to become dependent on benefits and have a sense of entitlement that many saw as central to the riots. But I defy you to show me where she had a policy of denying help to those who genuinely needed it.

As with so many people, Ms Arthur, you don’t go back far enough in determining where our present troubles started. It is far too easy to blame the hated “Thatcher”. I’m afraid that the seeds for our present mess were sown in the early to middle Sixties. It was during that time that an education system that had served us so well was dismantled, both in terms of curriculum and, more importantly in the present context, in discipline. Correcting bad behaviour was no longer acceptable. Young children learned they could get away with anything, where once they would have been admonished. Misbehaviour among children is one thing, when they get older it becomes entirely another. And when, as is now the case, five-year-old, ill-disciplined children become 55-year-old parents and grandparents lacking the formative skills to pass on to their children and grandchildren, you have exactly what you saw on TV. Many blame the parents. I don’t. What kind of tuition in basic behaviour did they have? Weren’t they told or made to believe that they were free to do as they liked? This predates “Thatcher” by at least 15 years. People are running around wondering what to do. National Service? It won’t work. The generation for whom this might be seen as relevant would be impervious to it. In any case, only the services have the authority and the ability to inculcate the required discipline – and they don’t want them. Prison? Won’t work. Too full already, thus no potential for rehabilitation and breeding grounds for major crime. No, the only way is to go back to primary education – get them young and teach them. Old-style three Rs and teaching proper behaviour. It might work in 40 years’ time, but as this is not in the re-election timescale of party politics it won’t happen. We have a teaching profession many of whom, driven on by leftwing unions, seem more intent upon using schools for social engineering than education. The picture looks truly bleak and we are reaping the whirlwind of political dogma that chose to change the face of Britain almost half a century ago. Mindless thugs

A missed opportunity

I read – or rather tried to read – young Katie Arthur’s pretentious philosophical treatise dealing with the causes of the recent riots in London and other provincial cities, the worst civil unrest seen in our country in living memory. Ms Arthur looks down her nose at her readers, spending the first six paragraphs explaining to us lesser mortals that anarchists are yet another misunderstood minority. Apparently, they are really rather a nice bunch of chaps who simply have a more optimistic view of human nature than the rest of us. I’m sure the hard-pressed shop owners who have had their premises burnt to the ground – and whose tenants were forced to jump for their lives – will readily understand the subtle difference between the Oxford dictionary definition of ‘anarchist’ and the reality of those mindless thugs on the ground. I look forward to the second part of Ms Arthur’s treatise, in which she will doubtless inform her readers as to how she intends to set about mending our so-called broken society.

Hats off to Horsham Cricket Club’s Barry Peay and his army of willing volunteers who worked long hours to provide a special Horsham experience at the town’s cricket festival. Large crowds enjoyed the club’s hospitality and some top sport over the five days, just a short walk from the Carfax. Praise also to the sponsors who supported the event. But, Horsham District Council, a trick is being missed here. An estimated 10,000 spectators came to the town for the festival. Local businesses need all the help they can get. Other county cricket festivals bedeck their towns and co-ordinate a range of activities, including theatre productions and a fair to encourage the maximum number of visitors – greatly benefiting their shops, hotels and restaurants. Through the Summer we already have a programme of ad hoc events, the concentration of some of which around the cricket could enable the local economy to benefit from the unprecedented number of visitors generated by the cricket. First-time visitors to Horsham might be very surprised at what our lovely town and its surroundings have to offer and be happy to come back again. It’s time that we stopped hiding our light under a bushel!

Shutter to come down on Play area reopens photo competition entries after arson attack Neil Henry Warnham Local Nature Reserve

It must be late August, as entries are coming in for the eighth Nature Photographer of the Year competition. We are truly fortunate to have such a wealth of natural features in the area and not a few people who venture further afield. The competition was originally mounted by Horsham District Council in conjunction with Horsham Photographic Society as a means of acquiring images of Horsham nature reserves for council publicity. It is now run by the Friends of Warnham Local Nature Reserve in conjunction with the council. There are four categories for people to enter, regardless of photographic ability: 1. Landscapes of Horsham nature reserves – Chesworth Farm, Leechpool and Owlbeech Woods, Southwater Country Park, Sandgate Park and Monkmead Wood 2. British Native Flora and Fungi 3. British Native Fauna

4. Overseas Flora, Fauna and Fungi There is also a fifth category – Young Photographers (U16) in any of the above. Oliver Wilks, a photographer for The Resident, has been a consistent winner of the young photographer category but is no longer eligible in this section and will compete against all-comers. Entries are only £1 per image, with a closing date of Wednesday, August 31. There are prizes for first place in each category, with an extra prize

for the overall winner. Winners and a selection of other entries will be displayed at Warnham Local Nature Reserve between October and December. For more information, visit www. friendsofwarnhamlnr.org.uk Members of the Quekett Microscopical Club enjoyed a field trip to the reserve and revealed some of the smaller wonders under a range of microscopes. These included a wide variety of pond life, insects and plants. The microscopical club is a registered charity, founded in 1865, named for a pioneer in microscopy and catering for professional and amateur users of microscopes. See www.quekett.org. The Friends’ 2012 calendar, comprised of images taken by members, will soon be available at the reserve and a few other outlets around the town. Another impending publication is a booklet on beetles, written by the late Mick Hillman. Although unfinished when he died last October, it has been completed with an excellent collection of illustrations and will be available soon.

An arson-hit play area has reopened. A climbing frame was partly destroyed, along with decking, fencing and “flame-retardant” matting, in the children’s play area at Southwater Country Park on April 28. But Horsham District Council has carried out major repairs to ensure the site is safe for children to use. Final repairs will be completed in the next few weeks. District councillor Jonathan Chowen, Cabinet member for arts, heritage and leisure, said: “We have had a phenomenal response from the local community, with many people being incredibly supportive. Thank you to everyone concerned for this.

“The repair works are estimated to be in the region of £24,000, but we are in the planning stages of a community-led fundraising event to raise money for the play area. “A number of supportive local residents are leading the fundraising effort. “If enough local people can be encouraged to join in, we can end up with an even better, more exciting and more adventurous play area for residents and their families to enjoy for many years to come.” Anyone who wants to get involved in fundraising for the new play area can call Horsham District Council on 01403 215257.

‘Deadhead, deadhead, deadhead’. Thats what I am saying this month. As everything has flowered so early, due to the hot weather in April/ May, it means all the deadheads on the plants need to be taken off.

This will promote new growth and new flowers, otherwise there will be no flowers in the Autumn. Due to the hot weather and lack of rain I have taken to planting my hanging baskets with alpines and succulents, it really helps if you don’t want to water much like me! Good plants for this arrid kind of planting are ‘Sempervivum

Grandiflorum’, ‘Sedum Cauticola’, ’Echeveria Glauca’, and ’Lewisia Cotyledon’. Plant them with lots of sandy/gritty compost and basically leave them alone, they don’t need much water, thats for sure. Another plant that has done really well in my garden is the wonderful grass Stipa Barbata (Silver Feather). It has beautiful feathery stems that blow around in the breeze and it just looks silvery white, beautiful (see photo). Stipa Gigantea has done well too – also known as ‘Golden Oats’, huge stems with golden grass at the top. Love them! The vegetable patch is doing okay, potatoes doing well, beans are slow but have produced something. The tomatoes are just not ripening, too much inconsistent sunshine! I have tried straw bale planting this year, big in America, but the plants are looking a bit sick, not enough nutrients. It will probably work better next season when it has time to compost down a bit. Basically you get a straw bale, put it on its side, make a hole in the top, fill with compost and top soil and plant in it, and water well. It keeps the roots of the plant nice and warm, but it is difficult to keep it hydrated and fed. Thats about it for now folks, till next time! www.lucysgardens.co.uk

was originally named West Horsham, Christ’s Hospital gained its first station in 1902, thanks to the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway (LBSCR) Company. The station was primarily for the newly resituated school, with the boys of Christ’s Hospital arriving in Horsham from Newgate, while the girls went to Hertford. Subsequently, commuting was expected and the boys’ needs had to be catered for, with a £30,000 investment for a new station building alongside other facilities from the LBSCR seeking to do just that. The station didn’t just help the school though, as during World War I it was used as a casualty clearing centre. In total, the station consisted of seven platforms and acted as an important junction splitting the main Steyning Line and the line up to Guildford. According to Mike Walker, chairman of the Horsham Model Railway Club (MRC), adventurous souls can still find the original Guildford platforms in the woods if they take the “do not go past this sign” path on the Downs Link at the Baystone Bridge in Mill Lane. The club even considered constructing Christ’s Hospital station as part of one of its displays, but the complex nature of the station dissuaded it and a scenic junction near Basingstoke was chosen instead. The MRC was not the first to struggle with the scale of Christ’s Hospital. Only one station worker was responsible for all seven platforms, unlike the far less taxing smaller stations down the line. With duties such as ticket collecting, cleaning the Tilley lamps and generally helping passengers, he must have been a busy man. The size of the station was not just impractical. As Jim Sheppard remembers, it failed to capture the character of the Steyning Line. After travelling all the way up the line with snow falling outside, the then Brighton boy enjoyed the jovial, homely feel the embarking passengers from each station brought. But he remembers Christ’s Hospital only for its “bleak, triangular platform” and the blizzard that engulfed it. Disappointingly, as Mr Sheppard remembers, Christ’s Hospital was not the bustling station its counterparts down the line were or like many had assumed it would be. Substantial residential housing had been expected in 1902, but this never materialised. The school was partly responsible, as in buying a considerable amount of land on its move away from the

confined capital, there was little space left for new homes and therefore fewer potential passengers. And the decision that the school would be for ‘boarders only’ meant rail travel peaked at the end and beginning of terms, but struggled otherwise. By the 1950s this situation was glaringly obvious and the 1955 rail strike caused further damage. With freight traffic moving to the roads during this period, Christ’s Hospital was becoming far too substantial for the services it provided. Ultimately, when the Beeching axe was wielded in 1965 the station was an obvious candidate for closure. Some much-needed attention was received that year with the filming of the Boulton Brothers’ Rotten to the Core, starring Eric Sykes, but the station’s death knell had sounded by this time.

Schoolboys sang Abide with Me as the Horsham-Guildford Direct Railway Line closed that year, with the station formally closed on June 14, 1965. The number of daily passengers at Guildford had dramatically risen from 100 in 1945 to 360 in 1954, but this success could not be recreated at Christ’s Hospital and the station became unprofitable. Christ’s Hospital’s story is not all doom and gloom. The seven-platform layout was wishful thinking to say the least, but the station was revived in 1972 by British Rail on a much more sensible scale, making use of the old platforms three and four. Sadly the signal box was lost to fire and the beautiful original station building from 1902 – which had survived the 1960s – was demolished in late 1972. Like the station, this building was simply too much for a small and sparsely travelled part of the line. The more compact modern station, while aesthetically less pleasing and not what anyone saw coming in 1902, is perhaps finally what Christ’s Hospital requires. A graduate from Horsham who studied at Collyer’s has set up her own business as a professional photographer. Rachel Dickson, who has a degree in photography, knew it was a path she wanted to take as she approached the end of her time at university and established Wallflower Photographics in April. Rachel said: “During the last year of my course I knew I wanted to be self-employed. It would allow me to make my own decisions, be creative and work more flexibly. Once I had

done lots of work experience, I knew it was possible.” The photographer specialises in wedding photography, which she says is the area of her work she finds the most enjoyable. “I have always loved weddings, which comes across in my work. I think my clients appreciate my enthusiasm for the occasion. Plus, I have planned my own wedding, so I know how important it is to get those photographs just right”, she told The Resident. “I have a particular style when it comes to weddings. I like to stand back, observe and take really natural shots. It’s where the name of my company comes from”, the photographer added. Rachel has spent years honing her

skills and made sure she had plenty of work experience with other photographers and as an assistant at The Daily Telegraph prior to setting up her business. Although it has not been easy, it is a move she is happy to have made. “It was quite daunting at first. I had no training in running a business but I got advice from family members. Now I am so pleased I did it. It’s going really well”. So does the photographer and businesswoman have any tips for would-be freelancers or people who want to go it alone? Southwater business joins the QR Code craze Londis, in Southwater, is taking part in a three-month trial involving QR Codes organised by Southwater Parish Council, Southwater Action Team and Horsham District Council. The new scheme encourages the public to scan the codes at various points in the village using their mobile phones, allowing them to find out more about the area and take advantage of special offers at the Londis convenience store. QR Codes can be scanned using Smartphone apps, which are free to download from most online app stores. They then direct the user to a website which provides additional information. For the trial the codes will be placed around Southwater using stickers at bus stops, the skate park and outside the Londis shop. The technology originated in Japan in the 90s, when Toyota created them to track parts in its manufacturing process. Today QR Codes, which resemble a barcode, are used for marketing purposes by companies such as Pepsi. In his rather fabulous book, How to Write Sales Letters That Sell, Drayton Bird says “the truth is not that people receive too many sales letters, but that they receive too many irrelevant ones. When people say they hate junk mail, this is what they really mean. They don’t like receiving things that don’t interest them. On the other hand there is ample evidence that the reverse is true. Any letter which talks to the right person about the right subject at the right time, and appeals to that person’s self-interest will succeed.” That’s good to read if you’re interested in writing sales letters but have a niggling doubt in your mind that this sort of correspondence comes under the banner of junk mail especially in a world in which everything seems to be happening online. In my experience, working with hundreds of businesses and writing thousands of sales letters, I can say that sales letters work without exception, regardless of what business you are in. Whether you manufacture widgets,

make exquisite fruitcakes, build websites or coach executives - you can successfully promote your business with a sales letter. And if you run an online business, don’t think that the only way to communicate with your audience is online. Some of the biggest online businesses including eBay and Amazon target prospects and customers with paper and printbased marketing. Adopt a wider view of your business and how you market it to prospects and customers.

This begs the question; what’s so special about a sales letter? It’s an intimate communication. The recipient holds your letter, hopefully reads it from beginning to end and thinks about your message as they do so. Research has uncovered the positive but hardly startling fact that physical material is more real to the brain. It has a meaning and place. It’s better connected to memory than digital communication. A well-written and engaging sales letter can have a positive emotional impact on the recipient, one that is often far more enduring than a digital communication. Your sales letter can have a real impact when accompanied by a natty

free gift or a sample of your products or services. In an era when we are so reliant upon e-mail, your sales letter provides an opportunity to engage and inspire your audience and encourage them to find out more about you. Online sales messages often struggle to be anything other than impersonal with many being automatically routed to spam folders to save the recipient from even opening them. A sales letter will always be picked up from the doormat, will always be opened if correctly targeted, and, if well written and relevant has a very high chance of being read. The challenge you have is that when targeting cold prospects with a sales letter you are writing to someone that doesn’t know you from Adam. Whereas you have many reasons for wanting to convert them into customers, they, on the other hand are unlikely to share your enthusiasm for this to happen. Their lives are not incomplete because they have yet to come across your products or services. So you face the difficult, but not impossible challenge of inspiring them through the content of your sales letter to find out more about you. You face a lesser challenge when

Weighing nearly 17 stone she had to lose at least five stone to give herself a chance. Due to all of Sue’s health issues she had to be pushed in a wheelchair by her daughters whenever she wanted to go shopping which would tire her out very quickly and of course keep her confidence at a constant low. She longed to be like other ‘normal’ people who could just walk themselves around the shops without any assistance. It was then that Sue discovered the Miruji Wellbeing Chair and the Sit&Slim programme. After a short work-related hiatus, the musicians have been performing for the likes of Alan Nimmos and King King and playing the Hebden Bridge Blues Festival and Leeds Festival of Blues. Singer and guitarist Stuart, a Horsham chap for the last 10 years, said: “It’s really nice to be back at proper paying festivals and venues. You get a quiet audience in the breakdowns and a good round of applause at the end. “Of course this is a double-edged sword - you have to up your game somewhat! UK rock royalty Southwater skate off is on a roll As a Gold Record-selling artist and having played lead guitar with Johnny Cash, Gene Vincent and Eddie Cochran before he was even 20 years old, Joe Brown is practically rock and roll royalty. More recently he’s performed a set at Glastonbury and also on Later With Jools Holland. With a career that spans more than 40 years, he’s one of the country’s most successful and long-standing exports and now he’s performing at The Hawth in a month’s time. The star will be on stage with his five-piece band, which includes his son, record producer Pete Brown, performing timeless gospel, rock, folk, and country music classics on Sunday, October 2. It wasn’t until four years after her death in 1996 that Terry Wogan first played Eva Cassidy’s version of Somewhere Over the Rainbow on BBC Radio 2, turning the song and the singer into a global phenomenon. Until that time, Eva had been relatively unknown, apart from in her home of Washington, USA. Eva’s voice and songs have been immortalised in her album Songbird,

which went straight to the top of the charts and received worldwide success. The singer is also on You Tube performing acoustically and has been watched by millions of fans. Now, Theatre Productions Limited has brought the moving story of the singer to life in a hugely successful stage show, Over The Rainbow: The Eva Cassidy Story, which is currently in its seventh year. Since it was first performed in 2004, the compelling musical has toured the country and received a rapturous reception from audiences and the press everywhere. The show follows Eva’s life and her journey from an idyllic childhood growing up in a musical family to her studio work with boyfriend and mentor Chris Biondo. The sad but uplifting tale also documents her exuberant live recording of Blues Alley, before her tragic death at just 33 from cancer. The last in our series of cycling routes covers Dial Post, Barns Green and Dragons Green. You should expect some wet and bumpy rides if you go off road, so choose when you go out carefully, especially if you’re not keen on getting a little dirty. Regardless of the weather, it’s an invigorating course, and the thought of an ice cold drink at one of the superb country pubs along the way can make it all worthwhile. Perhaps the best thing about this route is the short uphill climbs followed by longer downhill paths – great fun. You will start at Dial Post, just off the A24, where there’s plenty of parking, and continue past lots of lovely woodland. There’s even a windmill – and who doesn’t love a windmill!? Make sure you keep your eyes peeled for another guide to the area’s best cycling routes next Summer.

When is the best time to put my house on the market if I want to sell it before Christmas?

Whilst it may seem far too early to be discussing Christmas in August, I would recommend marketing your property as soon as possible. Even if you were to secure a buyer tomorrow, the law of averages dictates that you will not be in a position to exchange contracts until the end of September with completion scheduled for around the end of October. This may seem to suggest that you have plenty of time before Christmas but bear in mind that the chances are you may not sell your house tomorrow, there may be unforeseen hold-ups or you may lose your buyer halfway through the transaction thereby leaving you with little leeway time wise. Therefore to guarantee you achieve the best possible price whilst also allowing time for any eventuality, you should ideally want to market your property for at least a month to ensure that every potential buyer for it has been contacted and shown round. It gives your chosen estate agent time to promote and advertise your house in as many publications as they can; which allied to a concerted online campaign will ensure that no opportunities are missed. So if your property is launched onto the market towards the end of August, your estate agent should have time to get the brochures printed, book advertising space and agree on a concerted marketing strategy, enabling them to generate significant interest during the busy September/October period. This should lead to an excellent sale price with time to spare allowing for any hiccups, with exchange of contracts then occurring in late October or early November with completion to follow on a mutually-agreeable date between your buyer and yourself. This would be my suggested plan of action for a client in your position as it gives you the best possible chance of achieving the best price whilst also fitting in with your intended timeframe. We own a house in Horsham and rather than move, we are looking to undertake improvements and alterations. We don’t know where to start, can you help?

RICS research has looked at a changing trend in the property market. Increasing numbers of homeowners like yourself are deciding to improve rather than move home, according to new research from RICS. The slow sales market is prompting people to improve their properties rather than move, also buyers are facing high property prices when trading up, which are also prompting them to stay in their homes. For those undertaking work to their homes, surveyors reported an additional room or bedroom were the improvement which added the most value. Traditional improvements such as adding a new bathroom or kitchen were the next most valuable. Adding a conservatory, or reinstating period features were seen as desirable optional extras but not ones which add value. Surveyors also noted that costs incurred for improvements will not always be covered by the potential increase in a property’s value, as this also depends on the quality of work and other features of the property, such as its style and location. There is no doubt external factors were most likely to detract from a property’s price. A property’s proximity to a noisy road or a railway decreases value, while known subsidence was seen as the next most likely to affect value. I would homeowners on how to get the most out of property improvements: • Don’t be tempted to over value an improvement and expect high instant returns irrespective of market conditions • If extending, make sure that the accommodation provided (i.e. property size) is balanced with the size of the plot; bigger is not always better • When undertaking a loft extension or basement conversion try to keep the style of the new rooms in sympathy with the style of the rest of the property. A modern extension on a traditional property may look odd and lose appeal • If you are trying to sell, bear in mind most areas have a ceiling price, i.e., a maximum sale price you can expect to achieve. Improving a poor property in a good location is better than improving a good property in a poor location • Don’t bite off more than you can chew - stick to a budget and ask the experts for advice.

Most properties provide some potential for expansion and improvement, but I would advise people to think about how much they are investing and their key motivator before undertaking major projects. It is important to think about the style and age of the property before undertaking any works - remember, what appeals to some people may not appeal to others. Costly disappointments can be avoided by prior planning and research. The first photos of the Volkswagen up! have been released, ahead of the new small car making its debut at the Frankfurt motor show in September. The up! is an entirely new design, offering maximum space on a minimal footprint making it ideal for driving in the world’s cities, or even

Horsham! It will be launched in Europe in December. There are three versions for different budgets and needs: take up! is the entry-level car, move up! the comfort-oriented model and high up! the top version. At the car’s market launch, there will also be two models based on the high up!: up! black and up! white. Making its debut in the up! is a new generation of three-cylinder petrol engines, with outputs of 60 PS and 75 PS.

Combined fuel consumption as a BlueMotion Technology version (including a Stop/Start system) is 55mpg, and CO2 emissions for this version are less than 100 g/km. There are also plans for an up! with electric drive. An important new safety technology in the up! is the optional City Emergency Braking system. It is automatically active at speeds under 18mph, and uses a laser sensor to detect the risk of an impending collision.

Kingstonian KO’d by Tony’s treble James Herd Football

Horsham were widely expected to struggle, but fans have plenty of reasons to be optimistic after the first week of the season. The Hornets began their campaign at home against a strong Bury Town side and could point to a string of positives despite a 3-1 defeat. Horsham went 2-0 down within 12 minutes, thanks to a stunning finish by Russell Short and an excellent move capped by Lee Smith’s goal. But the home side never gave up and Dan Morris got his first in Horsham colours with a calm finish after a nice move just before half time. Bury substitute Roy Essandoh put the result beyond doubt, but Horsham manager Justin Luchford said: “They’re meant to be third-favourites for the league. We were in the game until the third goal went in.”

Horsham then travelled to another well-fancied side, Kingstonian, hoping to spring a surprise. The Hornets started brilliantly when Tony Nwachukwu scored a stunning goal, going on a brilliant run

before smashing the ball into the top corner from 20 yards. Nwachukwu struck again to make it 2-0 before the home side pulled one back through Tom Hutchinson. Kingstonian looked to pile on the pressure, but Morris scored his second of the season against the run of play just before half time. Hutchinson cut the lead 13 minutes from time and the Ks looked to have salvaged a point through Simon Huckle’s equaliser, but Nwachukwu completed a sensational hat-trick in stoppage time to give the Hornets a 4-3 victory. It was a stunning contribution from a player who rejoined the Hornets in the Summer and is looking to repay the faith Luchford has shown in him. The manager said: “He asked for a chance. I gave him the chance and at the moment he’s taken it with both hands. “Tony won us the game. His hattrick was fantastic and I’ve got great admiration for him, but there’s still a lot to come from Tony. He’s nowhere near the finished article. “We need to keep our feet on the ground and he needs to keep working hard. We need Tony to be scoring, playing for 80-90 minutes per game and causing problems for longer periods. “I don’t want him to get a hat-trick now and then not score for the rest of the season.” Luchford added: “We showed a lot of character. When it went to 3-3 you’d probably have put your house on Kingstonian getting the fourth, but we stuck to the task and didn’t give

Horsham YMCA pulled a rabbit from the hat, coming back from the brink in the FA Cup extra preliminary round at Lancing. Wade Eason and Dean Wright were the heroes with goals in the 88th and 90th minutes to rescue a replay. With the home side seemingly coasting to victory after a Darren Annis double early in the second half, the 92 fans were left dumbstruck as YM’s two saviours rescued a draw from the jaws of defeat. But Sammy Donnelly’s team were unable to capitalise in the replay on Tuesday. There was no follow-up to the great escape as they went down 5-2, feeling the full retribution of a dominant Lancing performance. YM have conceded 11 goals in their last two home matches. Storrington chalked up their first win in Division 2 of the Sussex County League, a solid performance proving too much for powder-puff Eastbourne United. The home side racked up four goals, through Liam Humphries, Craig Grantham, Kristian Harding and Richard Ayres, before Tony Russell bundled in a late consolation. And the Swans’ good form continued on Tuesday, a 2-1 win at East Preston seeing them soar up to fifth. Steyning Town let a lead slip against Bexhill United as they went down 2-1 at the Shooting Field. Lewis Levoi netted in the 25th minute, but Bexhill responded with goals from Andrew Garman and Daniel Hill. Town suffered a heavy home defeat on Tuesday as Midhurst and Easebourne dished out a 5-1 beating. In Division 3, Broadbridge Heath started the season with a goalless draw against Rottingdean Village. New signing Russell Harris tested the Village keeper more than once and Heath goalkeeper Gary Brown picked up the in-house man-of-thematch award in a match with plenty of chances. Heath bossed the first half and created chances for Harris, Russell Mortimer, Ben Garman, Rob Godfrey and Scott Avory. But it was not all one-way traffic as Brown produced a reflex tip-over and Avory a goal-saving block before Brown pushed a free kick onto the crossbar. A crowd of 72 saw Forest come from a goal down to breeze past Haywards Heath. Kyle Mitchell-Harris, Andrew Lampard and Jake Holmes all found the net to polish off a fine opening-day performance for manager Dean Potter. And with more players yet to return, the platform has been set for a real push this season. Visitors Hurstpierpoint pulled off a smash-and-grab raid at Roffey, courtesy of Mark O’Regan’s late strike. Horsham top with two games left Martin Read Cricket

A comprehensive demolition of Brighton and Hove at the Nevill takes Horsham back to the top of the table. The hosts elected to bat first but lost a wicket in Devon Endersby’s opening over, the second of the match. Although a 61-run stand took them to 64-2, they were confounded by the accuracy of Horsham’s attack as five of the first six batsmen were bowled and the other LBW. From the apparent comfort of 842, regular dismissals reduced the city side to 124-7. Several batsmen established themselves, only to squander promising starts. But for a last-wicket stand of 47, courtesy of an undefeated 32 by

skipper Matthew Wood at number 11, Horsham’s victory target would have been even more inadequate than 194. Jordan Rollings top scored with 41, supported by 32 by Tim Jarvis. The wickets were shared between all five bowlers, Michael Munday capturing 3-40 and Endersby, Sam Cushing and Matt Henry each taking two. Horsham’s fifth consecutive win was sealed by an excellent 148-run opening partnership. James Johnson hit 14 fours and two sixes in his 90 and John Burroughs carried his bat with 57, while Will Beer’s rapid 30 included five boundaries. Six batsmen reached double figures but were unable to capitalise after playing themselves in. Young all-rounder Matt Davies was the principal contributor with a battling 40 not out, but Harvin Baidwan took 4-46. Although Pulborough lost an early wicket, from a run out, an unbroken stand of 150 carried them to victory at 163-1 with almost 18 overs to spare. None of the eight bowlers employed could separate Rohit Jagota (83 not out) and Tom Crump (64 not out).

These are heady days at Horsham Cricket Club. As the men from Cricketfield Road enter their final two matches in pole position to win the Sussex Premier League, the club’s future also looks in good hands. None more so than this season’s Horsham U15 team, which includes no fewer than five players in the Sussex U15 squad. After the success of Sussex’s former Horsham junior Chris Nash, and to a lesser extent Will Beer, new names to look out for include John Barron, Nick Klein, Jonny Phelps, Ben

Shoare and Eddie Wells. Horsham U15 coach Dave Shoare said: “Our impressive run in the national ECB U15 cup competition this season, reaching the regional semi-finals, was based on one or more of the five putting quick runs on the board. “Klein has been extremely effective as an opening bowler in the T20 format. He not only takes wickets but also keeps the runs down, building pressure and allowing Barron and Wells to capitalise. “With his prodigious leg-spin, Wells has made many batsmen look foolish. And with his astute cricket brain and cunning off-spin, Barron frequently out-thinks batsman. “Phelps, who hits the ball the sweetest of the five, made his first 50 for the county and Shoare has an U15

county batting average this season approaching 50.” Shoare, who is Ben’s father, added: “I have coached the Horsham squad since the U10s. My required input has gradually reduced as the years have passed and the cricketing knowledge and understanding of the boys has increased. “They are now young men and my current roles as coach have been reduced to collecting match fees and driving them to away matches! “It has been a pleasure watching not only these five lads, but all the other lads in the same age group at Horsham grow and mature. “The U16 age group is the final year of colts cricket and we hope to do well in next season’s Sussex Junior Cricket Festival.”

When your significant other half is a teaching assistant, you are pretty much restricted to the school holidays for that annual break in the sun. This usually means August – the most expensive time and, more worryingly, the start of the football season. After careful studying of the fixture list, I booked a week when we were playing Cardiff away – a game which in all honesty I would not have attended anyway – and Blackpool at home. So it was that we set off to seek the sun in Greece. My son and daughterin-law were going to Cardiff, with a promise to text the score. A text came through at midnight, Greek time, on the Tuesday: “Cardiff scored a 90th-minute pen.” Everything seemed flat as I lay there contemplating whether this news warranted a late-night beer on the balcony. Ten minutes later a second text came through: “But don’t worry – we were three up at the time. Ha-ha!” I resolved to write my son out of my will for causing such distress. The next day we did a trip round Paxos – appropriate, I thought, after the stuffing we had given Cardiff. I set off resplendent in my yellow away shirt of several seasons ago, confident that someone would comment on Albion’s magnificent start to the campaign. Nobody said a word – not even the chirpy, cheerful cockney types I heard mention the ’ammers when I walked past, although I did get some strange looks from the locals. It was only later that I realised that walking around in a shirt bearing the legend Skint on the front was probably not the most tactful thing I could have done in view of the current state of the Greek economy! Then came a series of text messages from my son during and after the game against Blackpool. My emotions changed more than the water level when some of those ‘well-fed’ cockney types ‘bombed’ everyone else in the pool – at regular intervals, amid shouts of “cor blimey, mate, what a right old knees up we’re having here”. I did see them wearing London Irish rugby shirts, so maybe they weren’t West Ham fans after all. As for my son’s chances of a future inheritance… Don’t let on, but how can I blame him when he acquired his enthusiasm and love of this beautiful game, and in particular our great club, from me in the first place?

Polina, 14, slashes her handicap Youth Golf

Cottesmore GC junior Polina Zotova cut her handicap from 33 to 21 in just 10 days. The 14-year-old from Horsham started her remarkable period of golden golf by winning the West Hove Junior Open, scoring 65 net (88 gross) in constant wind and rain to see off 48 other competitors. As if playing seven shots below her 33 handicap in the foulest of conditions was not enough, Polina narrowly missed a hole-in-one on the par-three seventh hole. Her tee shot shaved the hole to finish 3ft away, but she did win the prize for nearest the pin. A week later, she played at the Ifield GC Junior Open off her new 30 handicap. And with 190 gross, she had the best net score of 130 – 68 and 62 for the two rounds.

Two days later, Polina played off a 24 handicap at Highwoods GC Junior Open and recorded a net 55 (90 gross) on a course she had never played before.

Polina has been playing for just two years and is a graduate of the Junior Academy at Cottesmore GC. She now plays with the ladies section as well as the junior section. She said: “I really enjoy playing golf. I am obviously pleased with how I’m playing at the moment, but I was truly amazed at coming down so many shots in such a short time. “I now have to play to my new handicap. That may be difficult!”

Sport in Brief Youth Cricket The home club came good as Roffey CC held its first colts tournament. Roffey A U10 won their group before beating Horsham North U10 by three runs in the semi-final and Three Bridges U10 by 37 runs in the final. Jamie Atkins scored 20 runs in two overs before taking two important wickets. The rest of the team was Tom Colbran, Josh Dance, Callum Jeal, Max McAteer and Samuel Smith. Roffey U12 won a round-robin competition with five wins out of five. Horsham Trinity U11 finished as runners-up.

Dowzat? President Paddy’s Power Play Golf

Paddy Dowzer, president of Cottesmore GC, invited “the people that make the club work” to a special game of golf. Paddy’s Power Play was a ninehole event in which each green had two flags – white and black. Before the game, players nominated three holes when they would aim for the more difficult black flag. Anyone achieving a net birdie scored six points. Playing to the white flag on other holes gained normal stableford points. On the last (ninth) tee, players could gamble and go for the black

flag, but two points were deducted if they carded a net bogey or worse. The players, men, ladies, staff and professionals all played off full handicap, with prizes awarded to each section winner. Dowzer said: “This is my way of thanking members in the club who help make Cottesmore run smoothly – committee members, staff or any member that contributes to the activities of the club for the benefit of us all. “The catering staff also excelled in producing a top-quality buffet.” Paddy’s Power Play has become an annual event in Cottesmore GC’s calendar.

Cricket Nuthurst (129) drew at Parham Park (101-9) in a low-scoring contest. Guy Ekins scored a brisk 44, Adrian Peckover made 31 and Keith Greenwood added 28 for the visitors before Parham’s last-wicket pair survived the final four balls.
