Plans for a new crematorium have been rejected by councillors – against the advice of council officers. Peacebound Ltd submitted a controversial application for a site next to The Orchard restaurant, Cowfold Road, West Grinstead, just north of the A272 and west of the former railway line that now forms part of the Downs Link. Rod Brown, head of planning at Horsham District Council, recommended that councillors conditionally approve the plans, which he said were supported by the restaurant and consistent with planning guidelines.

But this really was a burning issue. The scheme was opposed by West Grinstead Parish Council and this week rejected by the district council’s development control committee. The application included a crematorium, 63 parking spaces plus 34 informal spaces, and upgraded access onto the A272. The proposed crematorium building contained a staff room, office, crematory area with all required mechanical plant, chapel, vestry and waiting area, toilets, hall of remembrance, two suites for
families after the service and a kitchen. Mr Brown’s report to district councillors said: “The architectural quality of the building is of a high and contemporary standard, incorporating interesting design features. “The council’s public health and licensing team have raised no objection to the application but have requested that regard is given to the Air Quality Management Area proposed in Cowfold and possible mitigation. “A sum of £6,000 has been suggested as an appropriate sum to support air quality monitoring through Cowfold village for three years. “The opening hours of the crematorium fall outside the normal morning and afternoon peak periods for traffic movements on the A272. The percentage increase in traffic as a result of the proposal is expected to be no more than 0.9 per cent. “There is often concern that the free flow of traffic on the highway network is reduced by slow-
moving vehicles that make up a funeral cortege, but the A272 is already the subject of a reduced speed limit in the vicinity of the site access. “With the newly designed site access and the extended right-turn lane to accommodate those approaching the site from the east, it is not consider that the introduction of a crematorium at this location will unduly interrupt the free flow of traffic on Cowfold Road. “There are no highway-related grounds on which to base a reason of refusal of this application. “A crematorium is a facility required by society. Although its location due to its purpose is emotive and unlikely to be welcomed, this would not be a reason for refusing the application in itself unless material harm could be demonstrated.

School hit by vandals Vandals have been targeting Trafalgar Infant School, Victory Road, Horsham. Three security lights were damaged between 5pm on Friday last week and 7.30am on Tuesday, and a bin was set alight on Wednesday. The latest problems follow damage to security lights in March and a wall in June. PC Jon Walker said: “This damage is very disruptive and costly for the school and we are keen to hear from anyone with information about who may be committing these offences.”

Firm plans to repair the faulty gas cleaning equipment at Wienerberger’s Warnham brick factory have been presented to Horsham District Council regulators. The planned improvements will bring the gas emissions of hydrogen fluoride back into line with the limits specified in the environmental permit. The case rested on the contention that there is a gap in the provision from existing crematoria at, for example, Findon and Crawley/Worth. “This conclusion rested on the contention that hearses travel to crematoria at speeds that do not exceed 20mph, which is clearly

not the case. It also rested on the assumption that cremations are rising in relation to burials. “In fact, cremations are at their lowest level for 30 years and there is no sign they will increase dramatically in the foreseeable future. “The nearest crematoria to Horsham within a 30-minute drive time are operating significantly below capacity. “There was powerful evidence from one of Horsham’s leading firm of funeral directors, which raised big questions around the long-term viability of a crematorium on this rural site. “I was certainly concerned about granting permission to a building that has no other use and would be a rather haunting memorial if it risked having no viable long-term future.” A spokesman for Horsham District Council said: “The precise reason for refusal will be drawn up by officers in consultation with Cllr Jonathan Chowen and Cllr David Jenkins in the coming days. The applicant will have the right of appeal.”

Lawnmower fanatics aim to be a cut above Assuming you’ve heard of the sport of lawnmower racing, you might think it’s all a bit of a laugh. But you’d be wrong. Exponents of the art take it very seriously, spending thousands of pounds on machines that can reach at least 50mph. And what they claim is the ultimate test of endurance will come to Horsham district this weekend, with a 12-hour endurance race at Five Oaks. After a shorter qualifying session from 2.15pm tomorrow (Saturday), the race will start at 7pm as enthusiasts attempt to capture what the

Competitor Nick Lewis, 32, from Barns Green, said: “The racing is genuinely punishing and speeds can reach 50mph.
“Without any form of suspension, other than a padded seat, that’s quite fast enough over a bumpy track as the competitors will only too willingly testify at the end of 12 hours. “A lot of time and effort goes into it. All the mowers have transponders and all the teams have laptops to keep an eye on the times. “Lawnmower racing started in Wisborough Green a long time ago
and it’s now worldwide. “This event was held at Brinsbury College for many years until 2008, and the race has been won by Sir Stirling Moss and Derek Bell. £1,000 reward offered for information about thefts A £1,000 reward is being offered for information leading to convictions after cable was stolen from a rail depot. Two drums of cable were stolen from the depot in Horsham between 5.20pm and 5.55pm on Monday, September 12, and four more taken between 8.10pm and 8.30pm the following day. Det Con Vanessa Cottington said: “We know from our enquiries that a light-coloured transit van was used on the Tuesday evening and that a transporter-type van was used on both occasions. “Cable theft is a major problem on the rail system and British Transport Police are devoting considerable resources to combating it. We have arrested a number of people recently
and the courts are handing out heavy sentences to thieves. “So far we have had over 700 people arrested around the country for cable-related offences and we shall continue to have a high-visibility presence to catch and deter criminals. “We also conduct regular visits to scrap metal dealers to check any cable which may have been sold by the thieves for profit. “What they don’t realise is just how little they make. Is it worth risking your life accessing the rail line or prohibited areas for £50 in your pocket? “However, these incidents continue to occur and we are looking at new ways to deal with it, particularly by making it much more difficult for thieves to dispose of stolen metal.”

The shape of things to come in Horsham? Changes to boost Horsham have been suggested in a report commissioned by the district council. Consultants Urban Practitioners focused on three key areas – the town centre, the Hurst Road area and the Broadbridge Heath Retail Park area, known as the Broadbridge Heath Quadrant. Suggestions in their report include: • Albion Way: A walkable Albion Boulevard, shops lining the street in places, narrower carriageways with dedicated bus and cycle lanes, wider pavements, a tree-lined area with safer and more attractive crossing points. • Piries Place: New shops, a new link from the Carfax through the old King’s Head Hotel service area, a new pedestrian link between East Street and Copnall Way. • Swan Walk: Merger of some shops into larger shops for retailers who want to expand or move into the town, improved area outside Wilkinson’s, a new entrance to Swan Walk, new access to Swan Walk car park, new shops fronting onto Albion Way. • Hurst Road area: Redevelopment of underused railway land and better use of Nightingale Estate for employment, a new hotel on Hurst Road and improved links to the park. The district council will use the report as a basis for producing planning guidance affecting retail, commercial and leisure development.
The Future Prosperity of Horsham Project will involve partnership work with West Sussex County Council and other interested groups such as the Chamber of Trade. Cllr Robert Nye, leader of the district council, said: “The Future Prosperity of Horsham report represents ‘blue sky thinking’ following the long-established tradition of council-led innovation that has enabled Horsham to stand, in my humble opinion, head and shoulders above surrounding towns! “Not all the ideas will necessarily come to fruition and many will take some years to achieve. “Nevertheless, it provides much food for thought as we work to ensure that Horsham town remains a superior destination of choice for the benefit of our district residents, traders and visitors alike.” The report cost Horsham District

Schools in the Horsham area are being asked to sign up for a charity event, aimed at setting a world record for the most people signing and singing simultaneously. Steve Powell, chief executive of SignHealth, said: “Earlier this year, 94,489 children took part in our sign2sing 2011 event, including pupils from Horsham, and smashed the Guinness world records. The previous record was 13,418. “On February 8, 2012, we are once again inviting children to take part in the world record attempt for the most people signing and singing a song at the same time. “There are already more than 300 schools registered. We need a lot more schools if we are going to smash our current record and involve around 150,000 youngsters, so we are urging schools to get in touch now.” The event is designed to raise awareness of deafness and the work of SignHealth, as well as acting as a fundraiser through sponsorship from businesses and a suggested donation of £1 for everyone taking part. Expanded Waitrose for Storrington? About 200 people attended a meeting in which Waitrose was asked about the possible expansion of its store in Storrington. Storrington and Sullington Parish Council’s monthly meeting sparked an unusual amount of interest amid suggestions that the store, in Old Mill Square, might almost treble in size. The company told the meeting that the existing store was about 8,000 sq ft, but most of its stores were between 15,000 sq ft and 25,000 sq ft. It said the store had limited storage space and was not big enough provide a full range of goods. Waitrose argued that a strong supermarket anchor store tended to increase the number of customers visiting and overall growth in the area. Asked about the number of daily delivery trucks, the company said it expected a small increase, equivalent to one extra articulated truck per day. Waitrose has not yet submitted a planning application to Horsham District Council.

Police authorities will be replaced by directly elected police and crime commissioners (PCCs) after a controversial government bill became law. For the first time, on November 15 next year, the people of Sussex will vote for one person to oversee policing in the county. The elected PCC will be responsible for overseeing policing in the county. He or she will hold the Chief Constable to account, set the police budget and policing priorities for Sussex, will have the power to hire and fire the Chief Constable and will scrutinise the performance of Sussex Police. Conservative councillor Steve Waight, chairman of Sussex Police Authority, said: “I am pleased that the bill has finally passed through Parliament. “We can get down to the business of planning, in due course, a smooth handover of the powers of the police
authority to a PCC that leaves the people of Sussex with a continuous mechanism for police accountability. “We must not underestimate the significance of this step for more visible police accountability. It is in some ways the equivalent of Sussex voting for the Mayor of London and effectively the people of Sussex will be the employers of the PCC.

We will keep the people of Sussex and our partners up to date on the plans as they progress.” But Liberal Democrat county councillor Bob Smytherman said: “One of the key concerns that people have raised over the hacking scandal is that a very clear distance needs to be kept between politicians and the police. “The politicians and police are both important pillars of society, but they can only work effectively when they are wholly separate functions. The politicians should set the strategy for the police to carry out. “This is one of the chief reasons that most people in local government oppose the idea of elected police commissioners.” Cllr David Holmes, leader of the Lib Dem group at Horsham District Council, said: “It is similar to the question of elected mayors. Some will see it as increasing public accountability and leading to better outcomes. I don’t believe it will.”

Guy Leonard’s trek for charity Guy Leonard & Co raised more than £3,000 by taking part in a 100km walk along the South Downs Way. The money will go to the Dame Vera Lynn Trust for Children with Cerebral Palsy as part of the Horsham 100 campaign, run by Tanbridge House School in conjunction with PMW Communications in Horsham. Among the walkers, managing director Neil Moore, Ian Gough and Clive Blunden trekked 23 miles through the night Guy Leonard spokesman Cathy Moore, who also took part in the walk, said: “Rather than one individual walking the whole distance, we chose to do it in a relay. News in Brief Seats of power Nick Herbert, the MP for Arundel and South Downs, faces changes to his constituency under proposals by the independent Boundary Commission for England (BCE). The BCE is consulting on its initial proposals, which are designed to reduce differences in the number of electors and to cut the number of seats in England from 533 to 502. Under the plans, Arundel and South Downs would gain Plaistow and Easebourne from Chichester plus Bolney from Mid Sussex, but lose Walberton and Barnham to Bognor Regis and Littlehampton. No changes are proposed to the Horsham constituency of MP Francis Maude or 76 other constituencies in England. Steps to safety Workers can feel safer thanks to a national initiative which has seen thousands of broken, bent and damaged ladders exchanged for new ones. The 2011 Ladder Exchange, supported by Horsham District Council and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), is open to all local businesses until November 30. Cllr Roger Arthur, district council Cabinet member for a safer and healthier district, said: “The council is pleased to be promoting this initiative. “Ladder Exchange provides an ideal opportunity for businesses to assess the risks involved in using ladders and to adopt sensible riskreduction measures. “Most people own a ladder as they are an extremely versatile piece of equipment. For many workers they are vital. However, each year many workers fall from ladders suffering major injuries, some fatal. “This is a relatively low-cost initiative. According to the government, the existing planning system is “inaccessible for local residents” and is responsible for the recession and the relatively small number of houses, including affordable homes, now being built. Government ministers insist the planning system must be reformed in order to remove impediments to economic growth and to make the planning process “more accessible to local people”, thereby enabling them “to play an unprecedented role in shaping their future”. Ministers and our local MPs have also said that the government’s proposed reforms will not “undermine important protection of the countryside”. Sounds very positive, doesn’t it – a veritable new Jerusalem in which communities will shape their own future, much-needed affordable homes will be built and the economy will flourish. But are we to believe all of this? According to the UK Housing Market Survey of the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors: “The UK housing market remained subdued during August, as economic uncertainty and lack of mortgage finance impacted on the level of property sales.” It is economic uncertainty and the lack of mortgages – not the planning system – that is responsible for the relatively low number of houses built. The next issue to consider is whether the existing planning system is truly inaccessible to local people. Judging by the huge number of responses to controversial applications for large numbers of houses on countryside at Billingshurst, Codmore Hill and Southwater, local people are well able to access and take part in the planning process and make their views known. Why then does the government want to “reform” the planning system? The answer is to be found in the government’s draft New Planning Policy Framework (NPPF), which is the subject of a public consultation (ending October 17). It is to enable the government to impose “a presumption in favour of sustainable development”. In future, local authorities will be required by government diktat “to approve all individual proposals wherever possible. In other words, the aim of the new planning policy is to make it much easier for developers to build huge numbers of houses on our countryside. But should we be concerned? After all, the draft NPPF stipulates a “presumption in favour of
sustainable development”. For district councils, knowing exactly what constitutes sustainable development is crucial. However, the draft NPPF does not provide a clearly expressed definition and the government has recently rejected a request to enshrine in law a definition. Any proposed development might therefore be deemed sustainable. But isn’t the government committed to protecting our countryside? In the draft NPPF, protection of the countryside is reduced to general and ambiguously worded principles that will provide little or no protection to countryside outside of areas of outstanding natural beauty, designated green belt and sites of special scientific interest. Countryside and communities outside of these protected areas will therefore be more vulnerable to unsympathetic development than under the existing system. Sussex does not have any designated green belt. But aren’t local people “to play an unprecedented role in shaping their future”? Apparently not. Because of the presumption in favour of development and the government’s diktat that local authorities must “approve all individual proposals wherever possible”, the right of local people to object to planning applications will be severely limited, if not removed. Communities will only be permitted to say “yes”, not “no”, to development. Having housing allocations reduced will not be an option. This will have far reaching and damaging consequences for communities in Horsham district. But won’t the NPPF enable more affordable homes to be built? The government’s proposed new planning policy does not include a clearly expressed requirement for developers to fund and provide a specified proportion of affordable homes in their developments. Paragraph 39 seeks to limit contributions paid by developers not only for affordable housing but also for infrastructure requirements. Development cannot be sustainable without adequate infrastructure and providing communities with affordable homes should be a priority. If the government is truly committed to empowering communities then it will listen to its critics and withdraw and rewrite the NPPF. Communities and local people – not developers – should be permitted to decide for themselves the scale and character of development in their areas.

Stop moaning about free event I would just like to congratulate the BBC and the council on a great day out as my family thoroughly enjoyed the Live ‘n’ Deadly event in Horsham Park. We arrived a little late (10am) so had to queue for a while, but we were entertained by BBC representatives and animal handlers who walked the isles showing us snakes and other creepy crawlies. Once in, we wandered around and joined the queues for the attractions. Again the queues were long, but as the event was free and it meant getting the kids off their computers for the day it was well worth it. Unfortunately, we came too late to see the main attraction. But we had been told to get there early to avoid any disappointment, so it was our own fault really. From The Resident (September 16), Facebook etc, it appears a few people were unhappy with the day. My family moved to Horsham from south London two years ago. We find it amazing that Horsham District Council and others
provide so many great events, especially in light of the financial mess this country is in. The only event to happen back home is the odd pub fight and the yearly riot. The BBC has responded to criticism of a major event which prompted criticism of queuing times and reduced a boy to tears. CBBC’s Deadly Day Out came to Horsham Park on Sunday. About 10,000 people turned up for a ticketonly event featuring Live ‘n’ Deadly’s Steve Backshall and Naomi Wilkinson, and a collection of deadly and dangerous creatures such as snakes and birds of prey. Many people on social networking site Facebook said they enjoyed the event, but not everyone who posted about it on the site was impressed. Katy Haddick, from Worthing, told The Resident: “I took my seven-yearold son, Ash, and was bitterly disappointed. “After queuing for an hour and a half we eventually got inside to find

Six decades of East Street The pedestrianised East Street, now branded The Quarter, is a gastronomic magnet sporting some of the most tempting and exclusive restaurants in the town. How different it was 60 years ago (The Resident, September 16). In 1951, two branches of the Guildford Co-operative Society dominated East Street. On the left of your picture was the main branch, housing a well-stocked grocery section alongside a shoe shop on the ground floor, with clothing and haberdashery departments upstairs. Directly opposite was the Co-op furniture store which also sold – and hired – radios and TVs. Looking at the 1951 photograph, on the right-hand side, I can recall Freeman Hardy & Willis (shoe-shop), Marsh & Rugg (tobacconists), a small wool shop, The Anchor public house, the YMCA, the Scotch Wool Shop, the Co-op furniture store, Scott & Sargent (household utensils), Agates (corn and seed merchants), Slark’s (florists) and, on the corner of Denne Road, the Horse & Groom public house. On the left-hand side, I can remember the King’s Head Hotel in its heyday, Quick’s (musical instruments), Wakefield’s chinaware, the Co-op main doublefronted store, Cockram’s (grocers and provision merchants),
Trelfers (jewellers and one of the few original shops still trading). And towards the end of East Street, Geo Pearce, highclass butchers and provisions, where one’s bill was settled by a lady in a kiosk in the centre of the shop! Casting one’s mind back 60 years can be difficult, so I stand to be corrected as to the sequence of individual shops. It is also worth noting that in 1951 East Street was able to cope with two-way traffic, parked cars and vans – also cyclists riding along without being cluttered in helmets and day-glo attire. Happy days!

Photo society is on the move Horsham Photographic Society continues to flourish after “coming home”. Committee member Anne David said: “The society has been so successful that we outgrew our previous venue at Lavinia House, where we had been happy for the last few years and which fulfilled our needs admirably. “After a long search to find a new venue and several viewings, none of which quite fitted our needs, we eventually found the Salvation Army. And a salvation it is. We have been

on a popular route for horse-drawn coaches travelling between London and Brighton. With links to Guildford and even Windsor, the village had many visitors – including George IV, both in his time as regent and when he took the throne. This isn’t to say Henfield saw no need for rail links. Quite the opposite is evident in 1857. The Shoreham, Horsham and Dorking Railway (SHDR) sought a rail line that would miss out Henfield. But at the George Inn, Henfield, plans were drawn up to include Henfield and Bramber among other alterations to the SHDR’s ideas. Ultimately, it was the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway (LBSCR) members, such as those at the George Inn, who were victorious. Their suggestions gained the Royal Assent on July 12, 1858, as they were deemed more favourable to the people of Sussex. Within a few years of this decision, Henfield station saw its first activity. Its traffic mainly consisted of coal coming in and market produce heading out. Such was the amount of produce that needed transporting, almost every night of the week station workers spent their time loading the trains, unlike at most other Steyning Line stations. Animals could be put on passenger trains, albeit in a separate carriage, if necessary. By today’s standards, somewhat rural methods of transportation were witnessed at Henfield, such as the sight of calves poking just their heads out of the bags they were kept in. Tony Carter, station master for Steyning (1959-64), a job which included looking after Bramber and Henfield stations, remembers the aggravation some animals could cause to employees. Guards waited until arrival to eat their sandwiches – unless they wanted to share them with their passengers, usually goats. Henfield station did provide challenges. For engineering reasons, the station was built further from the high street than initially hoped and below the village. And the geography of Henfield, the highest point of the Steyning line, was often a frustration for train drivers. Having to overcome a 1:97 incline in wintry conditions, or with leaves on the track, could leave trains running late. It wasn’t uncommon for drivers to be given a lost-time ticket when they eventually arrived at Horsham. This height did have its advantages though, with panoramic views across

Sussex, and many knew of this in 1939. After Chamberlain announced Britain’s declaration of war, villagers rushed to the station’s footbridge to glimpse the German bombers they anticipated. Tony Adfield remembers this excitement, particularly the appearance of a slightly over-enthusiastic air raid warden. In his steel helmet and gas mask, but unfortunately still in his pyjamas, the warden blew his whistle and shouted at people to go back to their homes. Henfield was hardly the safest of stations in World War II, with the nearby Betley Bridge a strategic target for German bombers and the station used to transport local sugar beet to London.

But it is possible to paint a much happier picture of the station in the early 20th century. May Moray, a schoolgirl in 1916, regularly used the station and recalled a boy who went to Steyning Grammar. To the displeasure of his parents, his cap rarely survived the journey as it often found its way out of a window. Another child at the time, Alan Barwick, remembered seeing the smoke of Steyning Line trains before the locomotive as the track winded through the countryside just north of Henfield. On arrival at the station, the young Barwick would rush across the footbridge and wait on the opposite platform to get covered in smoke. These kind of simple pleasures are certainly confined to the past. Once a thriving station, Henfield’s rail links are hard to spot today. A housing estate, named Beechings after the man who brought about the station’s closure, was built on its former site. Jeff Vinter, a consultant to the BBC’s Railway Walks, believes Henfield has good reason to feel aggrieved by its loss. Other large villages that retained their stations have expanded, so perhaps Henfield’s closure was less justifiable than others. Could things have turned out differently had the station survived? This is a question that seems to be cropping up time and again on our journey down the old line.

Mobile apps uncovered Tesco has one, Visit Horsham has one, maybe you should have one? Mobile phone apps are everywhere, but do they add real business benefits or is this just another buzzword? James Hood Business Editor

John Lewis television adverts now end with the words ‘in store, online and mobile’. It’s a telling sign that that there is business being done on mobiles and smartphones these days and, if you haven’t already, you may need to start thinking about getting a slice of the pie. For those unfamiliar with the business and marketing tool, put simply, apps are tailor-made mini websites that are accessible on the likes of iPhones, Android and Blackberry devices. They allow you to order your weekly shopping, check train times or the weather, scan items, get the news or even distort your voice so you sound like the villain in Scream. Thankfully, Greg McClarnon, founder of Splaat Media, can explain things in a little
more detail. He said: “Essentially it’s providing information and services on the go. But there are two types of apps to choose from. The first is a ‘web app’ which is set up in the same way as a website and is accessible on any phone with internet access. These view the app in the same way you would look at a website on your home PC and involves designing a site around the features and size of a smartphone. “Then there are ‘native apps’, which tend to be tailored to each individual device and are downloaded to and used directly from it – these are often more expensive to programme and design.” Both of the app choices create an accessible, visible platform for your business that users can view wherever they go. That means more visitors to your website and as Greg points out, more money. “The most significant benefit of having an app and a presence for your business on people’s phones is an increased revenue

Even if you don’t have anything tangible to sell, making life more convenient for your customers is also going to encourage them to use your business”, Greg told The Resident. “A good example of this is the app I have developed which allows you to order a taxi. At the moment it is not developed for a particular company, but it will create increased bookings eventually, which means more
profit!” he added. But what if you are a small-town, independent shoe shop without an online presence or simply provide information on your website? Evidently there are non-monetary benefits as well. Greg said: “This is pretty cutting edge stuff. So at the very least it can set you apart from your competition. Even if it does not directly increase your turnover, there is a perception that a business with an app is at the forefront of technological developments. They’re cool! “At the very least, you want to make things as easy as possible for your customers. By 2014 more people will access sites from a mobile device than their home computers. So you don’t want to be without a compatible site.” But surely any website is visible from a phone with internet access? According to Craig Sawyer, director of Blue Juice, a digital media and web video production company, that’s not good enough. The web wiz says that often a standard website will be distorted and difficult to use if it is not adapted for a mobile phone. He said: “At the very least, every business should look at their own website on a mobile phone and see what it’s like. That way they can see how they look to their customers. It can be frustrating using a site that is not designed for use on a mobile. The pages look awful and the text is small. The last thing you want to do is annoy people.”

There are ways you can tell how your company website is being viewed, using tools like Google Analytics, and Craig believes it is the second thing you should do. “Find out how people are looking at your site. Because not every business will need an app immediately”, he said. The analytics give you a breakdown of usage from a home computer or laptop and a mobile and can even tell you how long people stayed for – which could be an indication of how convenient and user-friendly your site is. Regardless of whether you sell products online, it’s clear that your company’s presence on the web is increasingly going mobile. And you ignore that audience at your peril.

Awards hat-trick for train service provider Train operator Southern has won three prizes at the annual National Rail Awards. The company was recognised in the Environmental Excellence, Medium Station and Outstanding Personal Contribution categories. Southern was also Highly Commended for four additional entries. Southern’s managing director, Chris Burchell, said: “I am very pleased that we have been recognised so comprehensively by our industry colleagues for our achievements this year. Our people are the key to our success and they fully deserve these awards.” In the Environmental Excellence award category, Southern demonstrated its efforts to lead the way in the rail industry for reducing waste and emissions, with 2010/11 being the most successful year to date. Initiatives included a reduction in gas consumption by more than a third (compared to its own target of 8%) and a reduction in electricity consumption by more than 12%, making it already halfway towards its 25% target over the lifetime of its current franchise. Speaking about Southern’s entry, the judges said: “A company-wide
policy, that has been bought into enthusiastically at all levels. Southern has demonstrated that environmental concern is entirely consistent with business sense.” In the Medium Station category, Brighton station beat off stiff competition to win. After 160 years, the station manages to keep its architectural heritage intact while being sensitively adapted to meet the needs of today’s passengers. The judges acknowledged that

Seventies success for six-piece with flare A 70s band from Horsham that formed just two years ago have been kicking up their platform heels all over the place, thanks to their recent success in the area. The Jackie Generation is a sixpiece group that performs 70s tracks complete with full-on costume and make-up and their fun shows have meant they’ve now booked gigs in places like Croydon’s Fairfield Halls and Chequer Mead in East Grinstead. Janey Bombshell started as a backing singer and was soon promoted to front-woman of the group. She said: “It’s been crazy lately. We worked really hard to get ourselves out there entertaining people because we absolutely love it. And now, it seems to be paying off. It’s taking
over our lives. “A couple of the band members are already full time musicians and soon I will be too at this rate. We’re having a lot of fun. We’re living the dream!” The band is know for performing hits that fans love but that other 70s acts wouldn’t dare attempt and have recently added a new Donna Summer track, Macarthur Park, to the set. Having gone from strength to strength since starting out, Jackie Generation now has bigger hair and a bigger wardrobe budget – having all their stage costumes made for them. Janey Bombshell added: “We’re at our happiest on stage. It’s such a buzz and it’s what The Jackie Generation is all about.”

Jazz king swings into town The music of Benny Goodman and Ted Heath is about to be revived by Kenny Martyn with four of Heath’s star soloists, Tommy Whittle, Tony Fisher, Bill Geldard and Roy Willox. Liverpool-born Kenny has performed to critical acclaim in numerous venues including the London Palladium, the Barbican, and the Royal Albert Hall and is a regular headliner aboard the QE2 and now he’s coming to The Capitol. Kenny will ensure the timeless
legacy of Benny Goodman lives on for audiences of all ages. At 13, the singer won his second talent show playing jazz in front of classical masters Sir William Glock, Gervase de Peyer and Bruno Shrecker. Soon after, success followed on ITV’s Opportunity Knocks and at the Cheltenham music festival judged by Lady Evelyn Barborolli. Kenny was spotted by none other than Frankie Vaughan, who suggested he continue working as a

musician. There followed a long association with many leading UK jazz musicians and Canadian alto clarinettist Bob Burns, who played lead alto for Benny Goodman during his European tours and was also Benny’s main clarinet practising partner. The Change Up
You probably thought the same thing I did if you heard the synopsis of this film, in which two grown men miraculously switch bodies. And it would have gone something like this: ‘Really? Yet another odd spirit transformation/identity switch flick?’ If it’s not two versions of the Jodie Foster classic Freaky Friday, it’s Zac Efron running around a high school as a 40 year old man trapped in his pretty-boy body. But, The Change Up is quite the, erm, change up! Unlike previous films in its genre, it doesn’t only appeal to chicks and pre-pubescent teens. This is one for the boys as well, not least because it is rude and crude from the start (no offense lads). But also because it actually made me laugh. To fill you in, Ryan Reynolds and Jason Bateman play lifelong friends who lead very different lives. One is married with kids and a big house, the other is free and single. One night they wish they had each other’s lives and lo and behold, it comes true! And they spend the next hour and a half

realising that the grass isn’t always greener on the other side. You know the score. It does border on uncomfortable at times and if you’re easily offended it’s probably not one for you. But this film does weave its unnecessary toilet (literally) humour into what is actually some sophisticated comedy. Lines like “You’re so light, are you dying?” when Ryan Reynolds picks up his friend’s six year-old are so wrong yet only the most prudish of people couldn’t find it funny. Meanwhile the insulting slapstick, which so often gets thrown into a film for cheap laughs, has been replaced by some edge-of-your-seat scenes including a loose baby heading for a
working blender. Bathroom scenes aside, it was refreshing to sit through a film that wasn’t watered down for a less intelligent audience. It was packed with wit and one-liners that you will miss if you’re not quick enough. Don’t get me wrong. There will be no Oscar nominations for The Change Up. It gets a bit slow in the middle and you could probably write the script yourself. But on the whole, it was a really funny, easy way to spend a rainy, autumnal evening out. Rude, shocking, borderline -offensive boys being boys and I demand another (complimentary press) ticket tonight. See it at The Capitol this week.

Recent debate has been focused upon whether the MPC would vote to recommence the process known as quantitative easing, in essence the printing of money, to stimulate the economy due to persistent growth weakness. Choosing a letting agent can be a minefield for landlords and it is often tempting to choose the one offering the lowest fees. Particularly in the current market in which agents are crying out for more properties and are therefore slashing their fees to attract landlords. This may seem like good news on the surface, but landlords should not underestimate the importance of the relationship between themselves and their letting agent, which will ideally be a long-term one if their investment is to enjoy maximum success. Says Leaders’ Horsham senior branch manager, Kathy Taylor: “Of course landlords will naturally want to keep their costs down and will be looking for a competitive rate. However, when choosing a letting agent, landlords should never base their
decision on price alone, but also consider that they could be working with their chosen agent for many years to come. “They should choose someone they can trust to deliver a consistently good service and high level of expertise to help them make the most of their investment over the long-term. “Some agents who offer very low fees to attract landlords claim they are able to do so because they have low overheads. However, it is clear that these fee levels are not sustainable – if they attract more landlords through low fees their client base will grow and their overheads will inevitably increase. They will then be forced to either put their fees up or drop their service level, neither of which will be good news for their landlords.” Kathy argues that to deliver a first class letting and property

This is not achievable on low overheads whilst still maintaining a high level of service for all clients on a long-term basis. I have a good offer on my house but cannot find anything to buy – should I consider renting somewhere so I don’t lose my purchaser?
If you have just gone onto the market and have plenty of interest and offers coming in from a variety of buyers, you are in a stronger position to stick to your guns and wait until you have found somewhere to buy. However we are finding that due to the relative shortage of property on the market, vendors are receiving good quality offers on their houses because there are fewer houses for buyers to choose from. The flip-side though is that because of this shortage of properties, the owners then cannot themselves find somewhere to buy! My advice is that in the current market a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. If the upheaval of moving into rented accommodation for 6mths to a year isn’t too great, then I would suggest accepting an offer at, or above, your expectations and then be prepared to rent somewhere until you find your next purchase. You will then be a chain-free buyer which puts you in a very strong negotiating position when the house you want does eventually come onto the market and you can also move as slowly or as quickly as that vendor requires which again will help with your negotiations. The alternative is that without a buyer you cannot move anywhere, so better to have a buyer and not be able to find somewhere, than to find what you want but not be in a position to buy it because you have previously rejected great offers from buyers keen to agree a timescale that you declined due to having no onward purchase. The only time this strategy can backfire is in a rapidly rising market where you sell at today’s prices and then find somewhere in 6 months time that has gone up in value in the intervening few months so that you actually lose out financially. In the current market however, this is highly unlikely as we appear to be in an all too rare period of stable, steady prices for the foreseeable future which makes this strategy eminently sensible and workable. So I would advise planning to move into rented but in the meanwhile keep your eyes peeled just in case that perfect property comes onto the market in the interim. I’m a first time buyer, how can I improve my chances of obtaining a mortgage?
Many potential home owners believe that 2011 could be a good time to purchase their first property. With house prices reducing to levels not seen for many years and interest rates at record lows, the assumption would appear correct. Job security is obviously a concern for some, but the main stumbling block could be securing the funding. I don’t expect the recent rise in VAT to have an adverse effect on the housing market lenders are still more concerned with the risk of lending and the price of money on the swap markets. At present Banks and Building Societies are adverse to any type of excessive financial risk. They are also acutely aware that the advice of the FSA is for lenders to be responsible in their lending. No one wants to see a repeat of the banking crisis and in my opinion we are not going to see the return of volume lending at 95% for many months, or even years to come. This all poses a problem for a first time buyer. On the risk front the lender can’t refer back to a track record of mortgage payments and even if you have been renting proving affordability of mortgage payments can still be difficult. On the deposit front (especially with house prices in West Sussex being above the country average) a greater emphasis is placed on the size of the deposit and also how it has been accumulated. However, there are many things that first time buyers can do, to improve their chances of a mortgage application being accepted. Firstly is your deposit. The larger the deposit the less risk to the lender, so the better your chances of the application being accepted next and very importantly is your Credit Score. Make sure all current financial commitments are up to date and paid on time. Also the conduct of your bank account make sure there are no refused direct debits or bounced cheques. Ideally, make sure the balance is in credit, but certainly never over an agreed overdraft limit. Your employment history is also important. The more stable your employment history the better. Somebody that has only been in their job for three months will be deemed high risk. Next is the Voters Roll. Make sure you are registered at your current address. The fewer addresses you have lived at in the past three years, the better. Finally your documentation. Make sure you can provide evidence of all income’s that you receive. Also have at least two forms of identification and at least three months bank statements available at the time of your application. In summary First Time Buyers are having applications granted by Banks and Building Societies, but applying to the right bank in the right way is of paramount importance. Our house, built in the Thirties, has small clay tiles – a fair number of which were broken in one area when an amateur went up to erect a television aerial. A quote to take off the ridge tiles (mortar is going) and replace the tiles is reasonable (£450) but the roofer also suggests that he should pressure-wash the tiles and apply a waterproof coating. There is no sign of moss or significant algae, but he says it will extend the life of the tiles by 25 years. I am dubious about the wisdom of having this done. Do you have any advice?

I suspect that the person who you think is charging you a “reasonable” price is not actually a trained roofer, but a bit of a con man. £450 sounds to me like a good week’s wage for most people in today’s economic climate. I doubt whether your man is planning to spend a full working week of his life up on your roof, however. And I am not clear about what you mean when you say your mortar is “going”. Mortar is a sacrificial medium, whether it is between courses of bricks or bedding ridge tiles on top of roofs. Surface weathering of mortar is to be expected, and not necessarily a sign that wholesale replacement is required. As regards the idea that roof tiles should be pressurewashed and waterproofed, I’m afraid that this is bunkum. Pressure-washing will remove a fine surface layer which will actually shorten the life of roof tiles, rather than extend it. Horsham kept alive their hopes of a money-spinning FA Cup run with an equaliser in the fifth minute of stoppage time. Dane Luchford’s dramatic strike took the replay against Lingfield to extra time and the Hornets eventually ran out 4-2 winners to book a second qualifying round tie at Burnham. Horsham had been drawn at home in the first match, but due to a problem with Lingfield’s floodlights the replay on Wednesday also took place at Gorings Mead. Luchford put Horsham 1-0 up on Saturday with a calm finish after a mistake by goalkeeper Joe White, but former Brighton and Hove Albion striker Nicky Forster showed his class to equalise on the hour. The game changed again within a couple of minutes when White brought down Ray Freeman and Tony
Nwachukwu slotted away the penalty. But Josh Coulson’s header took the tie to a replay. Speaking after the first match, Forster told The Resident: “There is a sense of disappointment because I think the goals we gave away were soft. “I had a couple of nice opportunities in the first half. I had chances to score more, but the goal was quite nicely taken.”

The Hornets dominated the second half but appeared set for a disappointing exit before Luchford’s late intervention. Freeman’s goalbound shot was diverted in by Luchford four minutes into extra time and the manager’s brother went close to a hat-trick before setting up Nwachukwu for Horsham’s fourth.

Why Hornets’ Zak-trick hero is one to watch Youth Football
Zak Comber, 15, has been tipped for a bright future after a stunning hat-trick on his debut for Horsham U18. The Tanbridge House School pupil scored three times in the final seven minutes as the young Hornets beat Whitehawk U18 3-1 in the Ryman Youth League. A calm lob, strong shot from 20 yards and finish from Dean O’Keefe’s pass reinforced the reputation of the
speedy striker, whose goals in younger age groups have long marked him out as one to watch. Manager Ivan Raby said: “To score three goals at this level against a good side like Whitehawk at 15 years of age is a tremendous achievement. “He worked his socks off all night and showed his goalscoring talent with three very good finishes. I’m really pleased for him. He’s a nice lad who has bright future in the game. “When we went behind we had to dig in and we rode our luck at times. But when there’s only one goal in it,

Former Horsham U15 player Tom Frankland, who helped Royal United U15 to the double last season, has joined the U16 squad at League 2 club Crawley Town. A stoppage-time goal by debutant Max Love gave Horsham YMCA U18 a 1-0 win against Lewes U18 in the Ryman Youth League. The former Horsham youngster unleashed a dipping strike from outside the area as YM continued their unbeaten start to the season.
Horsham YMCA manager Sammy Donnelly believes grassroots referees are “killing” football. His comments follow two dismissals in as many games for defender Grant Philpott, who will now “retire” from the YM side. The left back was twice shown red for swearing at the referee – first in YM’s 6-2 Division 1 defeat at Crowborough, then in their 5-0 home loss to big-spending Redhill. Donnelly said: “The referees are just killing the game, especially at grassroots level. There’s no manmanagement. “He (Philpott) probably did swear, but it’s what’s intentional and what’s not. It’s part and parcel of the game, you’ve just got to be a little bit above it. “Grant’s retiring – he isn’t going to play anymore.” YM went two up inside 20 minutes at Crowborough before the hosts fought back and Philpott was dismissed. His departure against Redhill changed little as a jaded YM were poor from start to finish, with just one shot on target all evening. Former YM striker Gavin Gordon scored the fourth with a penalty. Donnelly added: “I didn’t think my players were a disgrace. I was disappointed towards the end, but they all battled well. “Yes, they’re a better team than us, but with £1,800 a week I’d have a good side too. I’m sorry I have to throw that in, but if I had that sort of money I’d have players like that.” Steyning are rooted to the foot of Division 2 after Jason Jarvis’ 90thminute winner for Littlehampton. Sean Pickup had levelled for Steyning after Danny Hand’s opener. Broadbridge Heath left it late to snatch all three points in the Division 3 derby against Roffey. Heath were heading for a 2-1 defeat after Jack Reeder’s opener was overturned by Wayne Powell and Aaron Jeal. But the Bears were rescued by Russell Mortimer’s brace, securing a 3-2 away win that left a bad taste for luckless Roffey. In the Sussex RUR Cup, Westfield defied their league position to spring a surprise at Storrington. Goals by Craig Grantham and James Davis were nowhere near enough as the visitors ran out 6-2 victors. And the Swans’ losing streak continued on Tuesday with a 3-1 defeat at Littlehampton. In the Sussex Intermediate Cup, Forest secured their sixth successive win in all competitions with a 4-2 win at Mile Oak. The prolific Andy Lampard grabbed the first before Jake Holmes weighed in with a hat-trick. TD Shipley’s misery continued with a 7-0 thrashing in the Intermediate Cup at Barnham.

It’s the best yet for Vernon Motor Sport
Kieran Vernon enjoyed his best qualifying performance and race finish in the Porsche Carrera Cup. The 21-year-old from West Chiltington, who took over from champion Tim Harvey midway through the season, takes us through his weekend at Rockingham, Northamptonshire.
Qualifying My first flying lap was my fastest. Taking the daunting banking of the Indy oval flat out was a huge buzz as I entered the braking zone for turn two. I managed to qualify in fifth after the first run, which was a big surprise. With a second set of tyres ready, we waited a few minutes for traffic to clear and set about getting another good lap for race two. But it seemed the track fell away in pace as the session went on. Never have I watched a timing screen with such anxiety as I feared being bumped down, but to my great delight no one improved. It was the best qualifying of the year and a huge step forward, far outperforming the top-10 goal. Race one It was a tricky start with the left side of the grid being damp. My best efforts could not hold back Richard Plant as he got better drive off the line on the dry side. On lap two I caught him very unexpectedly as I took the banking of turn one much faster than him and looked to the inside. He forced me down on the damp area, making it very hard to slow the car down. It got very tight into turn two between Stephen Jelley, Plant and I, but we managed to come out without
contact. This led to pressure from behind as I tried to battle with Jelley in front, and a small nudge from Jonas Gelzinis pushed me across the gravel trap in the final chicane, damaging my front splitter. My first experience of losing the front splitter came at possibly the worst track to lose it, with the turn one banking becoming more difficult each lap and the front tyres being worked extra hard. I crossed the line ahead of Gelzinis, to my great relief in what felt one of the longest races I have ever driven, marking our best result of the season so far in sixth.
Race two We started further back in eighth. I made a good start to hold my position, which became seventh when Sam Tordoff retired on the formation lap with a clutch issue. But small contact with Ben Hetherington sparked a slow puncture and on lap three the tyre gave up. The team did a fantastic job to quickly get a spare on the car and I rejoined at the back, just being put a lap down by Euan Hankey and James Sutton. To my surprise, even with an older tyre on the front and the tracking slightly out, I lapped only a couple of tenths off them each lap. This was very encouraging pace. I managed to pick up a few places,
from 20th to 16th, and drove every lap the best I could. Overall view Although race two was a disappointment, I am thoroughly proud of the weekend’s achievements. It was a massive step up in qualifying and our best race result so far. I have to thank everyone for their support, Nationwide and Motorbase for a great job preparing the car. But I must apologise to Tim Harvey for costing him two cream cakes! I am so honoured to be a part of such a great team of people and racing in such a great series. Brands Hatch (October 1-2) can’t come soon enough.

Royal United U16 followed up their 4-1 league win against Dorking Saints by hammering Broadbridge Heath U16 15-0 in the Edwin Hill Cup. Goal machine Jake Legrange led the way with four, while Stanley Rice and Greg Gander both scored hat-tricks. Harry Garman (two), Luke Polie (two) and Jacob Waller were also on target, and Anthony Jupp impressed. United manager Richard Chaplin said: “All credit goes to Broadbridge Heath, who never gave up.” Also in the Edwin Hill Cup, Chris Nicholson scored twice as Roffey Robins Wanderers U16 edged out Dorkinians U16 2-1. Southwater Red U18 won 3-0 at Bosham Colts U18 in Division A of the Arun and Chichester Youth League. Josh Tobutt opened the scoring after beating the offside trap with a well-timed run.

Lower Beeding Lions U15 romped to an 8-0 win at East Grinstead U15 in the Fred Sparks Cup. Liam Ruz (three), Glenn Johnson (two), Charlie Blair-Rains, Callum Nash and Andrew Roberts got the goals. Jordan Bell went one better than Legrange, scoring five times as Broadbridge Heath U13 beat Saint Hill Blues U13 6-1 in the John Laker Memorial Cup.
His fourth was a penalty, awarded for a foul on the marauding Tom Haines, but the pick of the bunch was a free kick after a 15-pass move. Joe Kirkham drilled in Heath’s third. Striker Callum Jones hit a hat-trick and energetic midfielder Tom Colbran scored twice as Forest U10 beat Hove Park Colts U10 5-0. Wide players Luca Cocoracchio and Harry Huddlestone caused problems throughout. Goalkeeper Samuel Smith made several saves, while defenders Richard Bailey and Matthew Dunningham contributed to Forest’s clean sheet.

Horsham Sparrows Girls U14 enjoyed a 4-0 win against Black Hawks Youth U14, with goals by Layla Burns (two), Chloe Abbott and Sienna Haydon. Manager Tony Monella said: “It was great to watch the girls starting to play with the confidence and flair that they all have. “Chloe was solid, creative and scored a cracking solo goal. Layla not only scored two sublime goals but chased down every loose ball. Our fourth goal was a delightful chip towards the far post that was met by Sienna.”

So for the first time since April 2010 Albion have suffered backto-back defeats. Last Saturday, when I should have been in Leicester, I paced the house listening to BBC Sussex on the radio while Soccer Saturday was flickering away on the TV. I knew I should have gone, I didn’t and we lost 1-0. In the Carling Cup on Wednesday night, we were expected to lose. All the pundits were saying we would, but those of us who have watched Albion since Gus Poyet took charge were not so sure. I arrived just in time to take my seat before the ref blew his whistle and before long we could see how sharp and quick Liverpool are. Onetouch passing, give and go, everything you would expect from a top Premier League side. Craig Bellamy scored from a tight angle after seven minutes and for most of the rest of the first half it was all Liverpool. Albion did create a couple of chances, but over our halftime pints of Harveys we knew we were lucky to be only 1-0 down. As I heard one young lad say, “it’s only one goal” and that was true. I would love to have heard what Gus said in the dressing room at half time, but whatever it was it worked. The lads came out confident, heads held high, and unfancied Brighton took charge of the game. The near-capacity crowd of almost 22,000 responded and roared their approval as Liverpool were pushed back. As both managers shuffled their packs, it looked as though only one team were going to score. Then heartbreak – Liverpool scored on the break and we knew the dream was over. There was still time for Ashley Barnes to score from the spot to make it 2-1 and the ref added four minutes of stoppage time, but it wasn’t to be. As the players walked off to a standing ovation, I noticed our man of the match, Craig Noone, had a Liverpool shirt around his shoulders. I didn’t see whose it was, but it was probably Steven Gerrard’s. Noone repaired his roof a few years back and Steve is his footballing idol. Nice touch Stevie. Tonight at The Amex, we face Leeds United in the league and we want the three points that might just help us play Liverpool again twice next season.

Horsham push Brighton close Martin Read Hockey
Fifteen-year-old John Kimberley scored as Horsham started the new season in promising style, almost forcing extra time against strong opposition in the Sussex Cup. Staunch defence nullified Brighton and Hove’s early short corners and a series of probing attacks created opportunities for the home team, rewarded with Mark Ansell’s goal after 30 minutes. U16 prospect Kimberley gave Horsham a two-goal advantage to carry into the interval against a side two divisions above them. But Brighton and Hove were bulkier man for man and the pace of the game took its toll as the visitors gained greater possession, constantly putting Horsham under pressure. The concession of a penalty 15 minutes into the second half, converted by Ant Falkus, was soon followed by Sam Forster’s leveller. Further advances on the home goal enabled James Galloway to give Brighton and Hove the lead. But

Tennis Robert Leigh beat Philip Nash 6-4, 6-3 to win the men’s singles on the newly refurbished courts at Broadbridge Heath TC. They then paired up in the men’s doubles, beating Ken Pierce and Nick Trout 6-1, 6-1. Nash partnered wife Dee in the mixed doubles, but Roger and Elaine Jowett won 1-6, 6-4, 6-3. Joanne Coombs won the ladies’ singles, beating Claudia O’Connell 7-5, 6-3. Jowett and Sue Whitty beat Ann Lines and Sally Trout 5-7, 6-1, 6-4 in the ladies’ doubles.

Horsham gave a good account of themselves against a club which regularly reach the final of this competition. Five Atlantis swimmers have been selected to represent Sussex in the National Inter-County Team Championships at Ponds Forge, Sheffield, on October 16. Beth Britton, 12, will make her county debut alongside senior club captains Cameron Lambourne, 16, and Katy Harris, 17, plus junior club captains Sam Carter, 15, and Issy Dunlop, 16. The championship is a shortcourse (25m pool) competition and is divided into three age groups. Beth will swim in the junior section (12/13), Sam and Cam in the intermediates (15/16) and Issy and Katy in the seniors (16/17). Atlantis head coach Bill Penny said: “Representing the county at a team event is a nicely different experience for the swimmers. “They have the opportunity to mix with another group of team-mates. They also have an early-season chance to pit themselves against the best swimmers of their age in the country.”
Bowls Horsham won 74-41 at Haywards Heath in a match cut to 18 ends due to stormy weather. Men’s captain Mike Power said: “Year on year this is normally a closely fought game, but in winning three of the four rinks we produced a fine performance. “A particularly good performance was put in by Roy Pretty, Gerald Moss and Ken Holloway, skipped by Robin Machell, who pipped the captain’s rink by one shot for the honour of being top rink.” Horsham’s winning run continued with a 68-53 success against Ewhurst.
