How you made a big Di-fference Readers of The Resident have made a real difference to the life of Diane Reynolds. Miss Reynolds, who has the nerve disease Friedreich’s ataxia, has received a new wheelchair as one of the first beneficiaries of Making a Difference, the Rotary Club of Horsham’s fundraising appeal. The 37-year-old, of Meadow Farm Lane, Horsham, told The Resident: “It will make a lot of difference. “I will be able to get out and do what I want to do, like going down to Brighton Pier or taking my two dogs out without my wheelchair cutting out.
“I’m very pleased because the wheelchair I’ve been in is very old, worn out and has been really uncomfortable. The new one has dual controls and I’m very pleased. I couldn’t be happier. “My carer Sarah put my name forward to see if the Rotary Club could help, but I thought the answer would be no because I didn’t think I was disabled enough to get it. It was a great surprise because the Rotary Club didn’t even know me. “I would like to say a very big thank you to all the people who’ve donated this money. If it wasn’t for them it wouldn’t be possible.”

Liberal Democrat MEP Sharon Bowles, who represents Horsham district in the European Parliament, has urged manufacturers to reduce the amount of packaging used to wrap Easter eggs. Despite government rules which require manufacturers to reduce packaging to a bare minimum, many Easter eggs still come wrapped in foil, plastic and cardboard. According to a UK parliamentary report, Mars and Cadbury have reduced the size and weight of their packaging, Guylian have produced the most excessively packaged Easter egg and Nestle is still the only company whose Easter egg packaging is 100 per cent recyclable.

Test it Tuesday West Sussex Fire and Rescue has launched a campaign to encourage people to test their smoke alarms each week. Test it Tuesday aims to get everyone in West Sussex testing their smoke alarms on a Tuesday as part of their normal weekly routine. Jackie Boyle, community fire safety officer, said: “You are more than twice as likely to die in a house fire if you don’t have a working smoke alarm. “Simply owning a smoke alarm and hoping that it works is not enough. Nine out of 10 households now have a smoke alarm, but seven of those do not test them weekly. “We all lead increasingly busy lives and testing smoke alarms can be something that easily slips people’s minds so we are always trying to find new and memorable ways to remind everyone. “We hope that by encouraging people to test their smoke alarms on a set day each week it may help them get into a habit that could end up saving their lives. “The message from us is very simple – don’t test your luck, test your smoke alarm.”

Storrington firefighters and police believe a derelict caravan was deliberately set on fire in Old London Road, Washington, on Tuesday night. A recycling-bin fire in Jengers Mead, Billingshurst, and a hedge fire in Horsham Park are also believed to be the work of arsonists.
