Cricket

Chris Nash has signed a one-year extension to his contract, which will see him remain with Sussex until at least the end of the 2014 season. The 28 year-old batsman and spin bowler, who attended Tanbridge House School and Collyer’s, said: “I have played here since I was seven years old, so to still be here is something I am very proud of. “With the players we have in our squad, our work ethic and the brilliant support we receive from everyone involved with Sussex, we are all excited about what we can achieve over the next few years. “I need to continue to score heavily in all forms to help Sussex win trophies and to push my claims for further honours. “This is alongside the hard work I am putting in on my bowling.” Mark Robinson, professional cricket manager at Sussex, said: “He is somebody we are looking to build the club around long term.”

Youth Cricket

Horsham Trinity U12 won two matches in the IDentilam Colts Indoor League at Tanbridge House School. Trinity (65-4, Leon Donnelly 24*) beat Billingshurst U12 (64-4, Donnelly 2-8), Billingshurst (100-2) beat Barns Green U12 (92-3) and Trinity (1093, Oli Lewis 26*, Donnelly 23*) beat Barns Green (54-5, Greg Monk 24*, Harry Simpson 3-11).

Horsham

Another well-deserved, hardfought win escalated Horsham to third in the table. Still being without senior players only served to make Horsham all the more determined. When Old Williamsonians took the lead through a deflection after 10 minutes of even play, John Burroughs quickly restored parity following a short corner. Horsham scrapped for every ball, never allowing the Kent side to settle, but towards the end of the first half the visitors regained the advantage with an open goal. Undaunted, Horsham immediately launched a penetrating raid, culminating with a fine strike from 15-year-old John Kimberley to level the score. And after some end-to-end play, Ed Jackson gave Horsham a justified 3-2 lead on the stroke of half time. Midway through the second half, Old Williamsonians had a goal disallowed as the ball was hit from outside the D. Horsham continued to mount further attacks, backed by resolute defence and brilliant saves by goalkeeper Ed Heathcock. Coach Sam Naismith said: “We were again depleted, with four seniors missing. This was a tremendous effort from some of the best young players I’ve worked with, but as there’s still room for improvement this team will only get better.”

Team manager Al Campbell said: “We had a game plan and sticking to it paid dividends.” A late goal condemned Horsham Ladies to a cruel 2-1 defeat at Maidstone Ladies after the visitors enjoyed by far the lion’s share of possession. Amanda Hilsdon scored in the first half, leaving the teams level at the interval, but further Horsham moves went unrewarded. Team manager Jane Denman said: “Our performances against the higher teams have been good and it was galling to fall at the final hurdle just when we appeared to be in control. “It was especially frustrating to see Maidstone’s goals coming from a short corner and a penalty flick. “We played well again and never gave up but just couldn’t find the net. If we continue to dominate play in the same committed vein, better results will follow.” Horsham travel to league strugglers Kings Alleyns tomorrow (Saturday) before Horsham Ladies entertain thirdplaced Sevenoaks on Sunday (1.30pm).

Motor Sport

Southwater’s Rory Cooper suffered frustration when his test session with Colards Motorsport was postponed due to fog at Brands Hatch. Cooper, who attended Southwater Primary School, The Forest School and Collyer’s, recently finished fourth in the 750 Motor Club series with 580 points, only two points from second. The 25-year-old hopes to move into the Ginetta G40 Championship next year – a major step towards the pinnacle of British saloon car racing, the British Touring Car Championship.

Dad Jez said: “The budget we are looking to raise is £25,000. This sounds a lot, but in the scheme of the potential and return it is very cheap in professional racing terms.” Potential sponsors can contact Cooper through The Resident – matthew@the-resident.co.uk • Jolyon Palmer, also from Southwater, produced an outstanding drive in the GP2 Finals Feature Race at the Yas Marina circuit, Abu Dhabi. The 20-year-old started fifth and made up two places early on before crossing the line third, his maiden podium finish. He said: “I am extremely happy and want to say thanks to Addax.”
