The BBC has responded to criticism of a major event which prompted criticism of queuing times and reduced a boy to tears. CBBC’s Deadly Day Out came to Horsham Park on Sunday. About 10,000 people turned up for a ticketonly event featuring Live ‘n’ Deadly’s Steve Backshall and Naomi Wilkinson, and a collection of deadly and dangerous creatures such as snakes and birds of prey. Many people on social networking site Facebook said they enjoyed the event, but not everyone who posted about it on the site was impressed. Katy Haddick, from Worthing, told The Resident: “I took my seven-yearold son, Ash, and was bitterly disappointed. “After queuing for an hour and a half we eventually got inside to find

There were three tents, with about 100 or more people in front of us for anything in the tents. “The show wristbands ran out at 11am and you could not get near the main arena to know what was going on. “The whole thing was poorly organised, with far too many people. I definitely would not recommend anyone bother with this fiasco as my son came away crying, saying he never wanted to come again.” A BBC spokesman told The Resident: “We’re really sorry to hear that some visitors experienced problems with queues and receiving wristbands for the main arena show. “Unfortunately, due to the high winds on the day, there was a delay in opening the gates while we ensured the tent structures on site were absolutely safe prior to admitting the public. We did have lots of positive feedback from families who had a fun day out, trying new activities and getting up close to some interesting wildlife.”

Yes, we had to queue and they did not open the gates until nearly 9.30am, but we got our wristbands and went over to the arena for the show with Steve Backshall. “This was just as fabulous as we could have hoped for – animals that gave the children the ‘wow’ face, Steve explaining everything in his usual amazing and genuinely enthusiastic way that held every child in silence and an opportunity for children to ask questions. Brilliant! “I heard so many people complaining that each tent should have been much bigger and that they should have had Steve on a big stage. “These people have completely missed the point of the experience. If you do an event like this for children on a grand scale with a huge stage, it will not work – only the first few rows would have been able to see anything. “By making each area much more intimate, the children really were able to be up close with their idol and the animals.

How many events can you go to nowadays where you can say that?” Lucy O’Pray said: “My husband took five children, all aged between six and nine. “After reading the email sent by the BBC, it was very clear that if you did not get there early there was very little chance of getting a wristband for the live show and that there would be queuing for every attraction. “The children loved it. All five realise how lucky they were to get tickets, then wristbands for the show.”

Cllr Jonathan Chowen, from Horsham District Council’s Cabinet, said: “You could see how good Horsham Park is for this type of event, with so many facilities close at hand. “It was just great to see hundreds enjoying the park’s maze, children’s play area, the skate park and the new Human Nature Garden in addition to the event itself. “I am really pleased with the way our officers responded to this opportunity to promote the town to such large numbers of new visitors, many of whom I am sure will choose to return.” Horsham Markets contractor Aldred Associates had recommended Horsham Park to the BBC. PJ Aldred said: “I think the BBC have been very impressed with the facilities and the council support they have received here. I hope they will think of Horsham in future when it comes to running other public events. “It certainly has been a great advert for the town.” A spokesman for the district council said: “We are happy to forward any feedback to the BBC, which organised the event. “Horsham District Council’s role was to provide the venue and to check it from a health and safety point of view. We also helped publicise the event and promoted the local area to visitors.”

News in Brief Phone robbery A 20-year-old man from Broadbridge Heath was robbed of a phone in Horsham. The incident happened outside Vision Express in West Street at about 2.15am on Sunday, when six or seven men punched him and forced him to the floor. They took his distinctive HDS smartphone, which has a grey and purple surround. The victim sustained head injuries and was treated at the East Surrey Hospital, Redhill, but was discharged later the same day. Det Con Heidi McCall said: “Although the town centre was relatively quiet at the time, we still feel there may be witnesses. “The offenders came from the direction of the Shelley Fountain. Axe incident Motorists on the A24 near Horsham may be able to help a police investigation into a driver’s claim that he was threatened with an axe. The incident is said to have happened just after 6pm on Monday. A 38-year-old local man, driving a silver Toyota Harrier, had just negotiated the Great Daux roundabout southbound when he was allegedly confronted by the driver of a black Ford Mondeo. Kelly, of Brook Road, Horsham, is married to Alex and mum to Ollie, four, and Ben, two. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in December last year after finding a lump on her birthday, when breastfeeding Ben. Both she and her GP thought it was a blocked milk duct, but when the problem did not subside (she felt a lump like a “squashed toffee”) Kelly was sent for further tests and the cancer was discovered. She was devastated. Kelly, a nursery nurse, said: “I had two boys, aged three and 18 months, and I didn’t think I would be around to see them grow up. I went into complete meltdown for four days.” After further tests, she discovered the cancer had only spread to three lymph nodes.

She added: “It was still a doublewhammy because I had to go into hospital so I was away from the boys and I had to stop breastfeeding. It was a big shock to have this wonderful experience taken away from me.”

Kelly knew she would lose her hair during chemotherapy treatment so decided to “stick two fingers up to cancer” by cutting it short and dying it red. When it did fall out, she told her boys that her head didn’t like the colour and decided to “spit it out”. She recalled: “Losing my hair was worse than losing my breast. I had a wig but Ollie preferred my ‘Malteser’ head. He called the wig a ferret!” Continued on Page 5

A record number of people, 165, completed a real ale trail organised by Horsham District Council as part of the Food and Drink Festival’s Big Nibble event. Lib Dems criticise county council cuts Liberal Democrats have highlighted the impact of cuts to disabled people’s services, being imposed by West Sussex County Council. Lib Dems at County Hall spoke out following the release of an in-depth report by disability charity Scope in conjunction with the Demos think tank, assessing the impact of cuts on a council-by-council basis. Cllr Bob Smytherman, Lib Dem spokesman for adults’ services, told The Resident: “I know that difficult decisions have to be made by local authorities across the country when it comes to setting budgets. “However, there are some remarkable cases where creative solutions have meant that the impact on disabled people has been mitigated. “I will continue to work with colleagues to ensure our services for disabled people are protected as far as possible.” Cllr James Walsh, Lib Dem deputy group leader, said: “Earlier this year Liberal Democrats proposed an amendment to the current budget which would have delayed the implementation of some of the cuts. “We were extremely concerned that the loss of some services was not properly understood and our fear that very vulnerable people would be left without reasonable support has been borne out in Scope’s findings. “We are very disappointed that every single Conservative councillor voted the budget cuts through, resulting in deep cuts in care for older

people and people with learning difficulties. “Since 2000, West Sussex Conservatives have presided over a borrowing binge, racking up a massive £430 million of debt in just 11 years. Yet they queued up to lecture the Liberal Democrats on profligacy, saying the council had to learn to live within its means. “Despite the widely publicised condemnation of the levels of council reserves by the Secretary of State responsible for local government, West Sussex Conservatives also chose to add to their already substantial reserves. “These stood at a very prudent £26 million on March 31. But rather than using some of the money, as expected by Eric Pickles, they doubled them to some £50 million by 2011-2, vastly increasing our debt for the future. “Pouring money into reserves seems more important to the Tories than maintaining front-line services to the most vulnerable in the county.” Richard Hawkes, chief executive of Scope, said: “For months now, disabled people have felt that they are being disproportionately affected by budget cuts. “This research reveals the true reality of the lives of thousands of disabled families across the country as they begin to feel the effect of local budget cuts. “We are calling on councils to put disabled people and their families at the centre of decisions that affect

their lives. “This research also exposes a potential risk in the government’s localism agenda. While some councils will always seek to innovate and protect the interests of their constituents, others will choose the easier option.

“The government must make sure that disabled people are protected through its localism agenda. Otherwise it can no longer claim that those with the broadest shoulders are carrying the greatest burden.” A spokesman for the county council said: “West Sussex County Council has to make £79 million savings over the next three years. “However, nearly 80 per cent of the cut to the council budget is being found not by service cutbacks, but by

management improvements, streamlining the organisation and cutting bureaucracy. “Cuts to frontline services have been kept to an absolute minimum but cannot be avoided completely. Where cuts to services have been made, the decision has been taken following consultation and ensuring alternative community services would be available. “The report by Demos has been discredited by a number of professional organisations. A number of councils didn’t respond to the Demos Freedom of Information request and others didn’t respond in full.” The impact of changes to adult social care will be assessed by the adults’ services committee at County Hall, Chichester, on Thursday, September 22 (10.30am). Cllr Irene Richards, chairman of the committee, said: “We are carrying out a survey to encourage adults who receive social care and their carers to let us know how changes to social care have affected them. “As we will be considering the impact of the changes at our September meeting, I would ask people to respond to the survey as soon as possible to help inform our view. “We want to hear what has worked well and what has not worked so well – all experiences, good and bad.” To take part in the survey, visit www.westsussex.gov.uk and type “adults’ services select committee” in the search bar.

Unique canal waterwheel reopens after 140 years MP Nick Herbert cut the ribbon to open the recommissioned Lordings Waterwheel on the Wey and Arun Canal. The Arundel and South Downs MP, vice-president of the Wey and Arun Canal Trust, was joined by members of the trust, local residents and many other supporters to open the refurbished waterwheel. The waterwheel, which is believed to be the only one of its kind in the country, is located near Adversane on the canal. Built to lift water from the River Arun into the canal, it has not been working for almost 140 years. After the official ribbon-cutting by the MP, the crowds delighted in seeing the waterwheel begin rotating again. Lifting 1,800 gallons per hour, the brick and stone chamber began to fill as the wheel turned.

Mr Herbert addressed the visitors after the ceremony and commended the hard work and patience of all involved with the project. He highlighted the trust’s goal to achieve the restoration, as a

public amenity, of the navigable link between the rivers Wey and Arun. Mr Herbert raised many smiles as he spoke of his dream to be able to travel from Westminster to Arundel by inland waterway. The foundations of the waterwheel chamber were first exposed 10 years ago by a work group led by Winston Harwood before the project to rebuild the waterwheel began. Project manager Tony Turnbull’s engineering expertise was invaluable because there were no archives and no similar waterwheels in this country to work from. Mr Herbert said: “I have been so impressed by the hard work and dedication of all those involved with the renovation of this waterwheel. “I am very proud to be a vice-president of the Wey and Arun Canal Trust because I genuinely love canals. I remember many happy childhood holidays spent on them. “This is a beautiful stretch of water and countryside, and it is wonderful to see it enhanced by this restoration. “I am very grateful to all the volunteers who donated their time and for the generosity of patrons who donated funds to make this project possible. “I look forward to the opening of the next section of canal as the trust works towards its ultimate goal of making the whole waterway navigable once again.” Sally Schupke, chairman of the Wey

Thirty comments have been received from the public about the proposed Air Quality Management Area in the centre of Cowfold. While memory of the recent riots is still fresh, but we have cooled down sufficiently to give them something like considered thought, it might be appropriate to put behind us talk of “criminal elements, pure and simple” or the “feral underclass” and think again. Why? These things don’t happen in Horsham do they, and it’s hard to think that they might. But that is precisely why we should concern ourselves. If society is broken, anything which encourages us to distance ourselves still further from the “others” is unhelpful. No one could support or condone the criminal behaviour we saw. But that is a moral judgment which, although sound in itself, is a quite different sort of argument from that which proposes a neutral, factual explanation of why societies become broken. There is such an argument and it is contained in the work of the Equality Trust – www. equalitytrust.org.uk – created by Professors Wilkinson and Pickett. They have researched the most developed countries in the world, using official statistics, looking for common links to social problems. What they demonstrate is a very strong connection between income inequality and a whole range of social problems from health, to education, to crime etc. The link between inequality and crime, evidenced by the size of the prison population, is strong. The gap between wealthy and poor in the UK is one of the largest in the world and the proportion of the population in prison is also one of the highest. Ken Clarke might reflect on that. The UK has very low levels of trust. Barely one in three of us apparently believe “most other people can be trusted”. What example

A Horsham woman has told of her shock after the building she used to live in was destroyed by arsonists. Liz de Cruz, of Redford Avenue, lived above House of Reeves, the furniture store in Croydon which made international headlines this week when it was burnt down during the London riots. The business has been at Reeves Corner for 144 years, run by five generations of one family. Mrs de Cruz was married to co-owner Trevor Reeves for about a decade from 1980 before divorcing and remarrying. The 59-year-old workplace trainer told The Resident: “We lived in a flat above for

about three years and were there at the time of the Brixton riots in 1981. “The flat was later made into a showroom, but we were quite fearful 30 years ago that the rioting would spread and that something would happen in Croydon. “Fortunately it didn’t. But it happened this week and they’ve destroyed part of Croydon. “My daughter Natasha phoned me, absolutely distraught. I turned on the TV and saw the shop on fire. Possibly Trevor had contacted Natasha. He had been contacted by people he knew in that area who had seen a group of youths by the shop. “Trevor drove down to the shop to see what was going on and was standing across the road when it went up in flames. He stood and watched, helpless. “There are a lot of political and social issues and people do these things for different reasons, but they couldn’t have got

anything out of this fire. They are pointless people. “It was a complete media scrum on Tuesday. (Prime Minister) David Cameron was in Croydon. (Mayor of London) Boris Johnson came over and talked to us. Politicians have to be seen to be doing the right thing, but the family is left to pick up the pieces and keep the business going. “I’ve just been watching my daughter on ITV’s This Morning. I was immensely proud of her and her composure, how she represented the family in the face of this horrendous thing that’s happened. “It’s devastating, but we are what makes Britain good and the business will keep going. It must keep a presence at Reeves Corner and we need everyone to get behind us to make that happen.” A man has been arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life. Continued on Page 9

So, setting moral outrage aside for the moment, as the rioters were in the main young, out of work and with a cynical distrust of authority, might it be that the riots did indeed have more to do with the gap between the wealthier in our society and the poorer than with simple criminality? To date there have been strong murmurs of approval from both main party leaders for the work of Wilkinson and Pickett, whose book, The Spirit Level, is widely read in Westminster and described as “influential”. But there has been little or nothing by way of concrete policy proposals. Ninety-three MPs signed an Early Day Motion for a debate on the issue. In the meantime, as the cuts bite, the gap between richer and poorer widens – and the burden appears to fall more heavily on the young and the poor and disaffected. Perhaps Mr Maude would care to respond?

Riot debate is still raging I really do have to take Mark Ramey to task for comments he made about my lack of understanding of politics and contemporary culture, as they relate to the recent appalling rioting and nihilistic behaviour in London and other provincial cities (The Resident, September 2). Firstly, in my letter regarding Katie Arthur’s treatise, I made no mention of Baroness Thatcher or of her period as Prime Minister – my principal concern being Ms Arthur’s wrongheaded approach to the beliefs and actions of those who refer to themselves as anarchists. Far from being erudite, in my opinion her approach was simply naive. As regards my own political experience, I did serve a period in a chequered career working in the

Conservative Research Department and later in Edward Heath’s private office. And, unlike Mr Ramey, I did serve two years’ National Service – first in the Royal Artillery and later in the Intelligence Corps. From my experience, most former National Servicemen did find their stint in the armed forces of considerable benefit in later life, both in terms of confidence and self-discipline. I hold no brief for Margaret Thatcher or her policies, but since she resigned from office over 20 years ago I don’t think young Katie Arthur is qualified to comment at such length on the presumed social effects of her premiership. That is, of course, unless she received her tuition from the likes of Mr Ramey.

Join the Green Gym’s workout Members of Horsham Green Gym, the nature conservation group, will carry out practical work twice a week during the Autumn and Winter.

From the beginning of October to the end of March next year, with continuing help from the countryside wardens of Horsham District Council, members of the 30-strong group will

meet on Thursdays as well as their usual Tuesdays. Co-leader Dick Simmons said: “There is always more of our type of work available in those months. We like to be active to exercise heart and muscles, out of doors while doing something worthwhile. “You don’t have to be tough and strong to belong to the group as everyone is encouraged to work at their own pace. “Members do as much as they are able or want to do. We move off from our meeting place at 10am and finish work by 1pm.” Recent tasks have included a wild orchid survey in Southwater Country Park, work at the Human Nature Garden in Horsham Park, uprooting young silver birch to help the return of the heathland, and trimming blackthorn off Lemmington Way. In conjunction with West Sussex County Council last year, they replaced stiles with kissing gates to allow easier access to Denne Park. Future tasks include cutting back trees to allow more daylight to a local pond, work in Horsham Park, reducing invasive rhododendron and widening two footpaths. A quarterly programme is shown

on the group’s website and paper copies are also available. But it is not all work as members enjoyed a post-Christmas celebration at the start of the year and, more recently, two barbecues.

Last October, Horsham Green Gym was proud to receive an ‘outstanding’ certificate in the Royal Horticultural Society’s awards. Well known around the town, the group was recently seen on TV screens in Germany as part of a programme investigating the British way of volunteering and nature conservation. Membership is free. Local counselling service re-opens after refurbishment Horsham and Crawley Counselling Service (HCCS) is based in Horsham, West Sussex, and is a registered charity. HCCS has recently merged with Sussex Central YMCA and is now part of Dialogue, Sussex Central YMCA’s Family and Therapeutic Services. potential passengers – certainly more than the hamlet of West Grinstead – Partridge Green was an important local station. The early Steyning Line saw Partridge Green as its northern terminus when the station was opened on July 1, 1861. This only lasted a couple of months, with the growth of stations we have seen in previous editions, but traffic remained high. Two freight trains would arrive each day, one from Three Bridges and one from Hove, transporting fertiliser, coal, animals and more. Milk churns would also appear on the station, ready to head south from the farmers of Partridge Green to the dairies of Brighton, as you can see to the left of the photograph. As with Southwater, Partridge Green’s value to the local economy was considerable – and this isn’t where the similarities end. Partridge Green was built to the same design as Southwater and Bramber, the only difference being Partridge Green’s ticket office was right beside its signal box. This meant only one station hand was needed, rather than a separate signalman. In saying this though, the village’s largest employer was the railways. Six or seven fettlers, or gangers, worked at the station. These men completed various tasks, such as walking up the line to Henfield and back with a small sledgehammer to ensure the chocks of wood on the track were sturdily positioned. Gangers were also known to cut grass by the track to reduce the risk of fire as the trains thundered by. It wasn’t uncommon to hear of farmers claiming compensation for such fires ruining crops. Then again, it wasn’t uncommon to hear of farmers starting these fires themselves. It seems dodgy compensation claims are nothing new! Some things will remain confined to the past. Today the doors close 30 seconds before departure, but Paul Jefford remembers shouting to the driver to stop and somehow getting on. He and his sister were once late for their train to school at Partridge Green, but a quick dash under a wire fence, over the track and a helping hand up from the driver allowed them to continue their journey. Another health and safety nightmare was often seen at Betley Bridge, where children swam while train crew threw coals at them. It would also surprise the modern passenger that you were expected to switch off the lights at the end of a busy day. But Fred Knight remembers

waving his girlfriend off as she departed for Horsham, then dousing the lamps and leaving by the goods yard as the porter had already gone home. Fond memories like these are pleasant to reflect upon, but more importantly show a genuine emotion from locals to their station. All good things must come to an end and by 1966 Beeching ensured they did. Numerous events were responsible for Partridge Green’s decline, with some looking to the removal of freight sidings on the Steyning Line to explain the station’s lack of traffic. In truth though, Partridge Green’s dye had already been cast.

Partridge Green’s ‘value to the local economy was considerable

Shoppers from Steyning and Horsham were finding the station too distant and the village too small for trade. Regular buses and the rise of road traffic, once only the preserve of the wealthy, meant farmers and shoppers alike could rely on other services beyond the railway. The failure of Partridge Green to electrify its part of the line meant the station failed to move with the times. Later, this proved to be telling when oil company Shell decided against placing a depot in Partridge Green due to the uncertainty of rail access in the Sixties. All these factors led to closure and little remains to remind us of the station. The Star Road industrial estate was constructed in 1969 over where the station had operated just three years earlier. The pubs that served many a passenger have changed too, with the former Cat and Canary now the Old Railway Tavern and the Station Hotel now the Partridge. The Downs Link means the memory of Partridge Green station is kept alive to some extent at least, but it is the memories of individuals that can still be preserved. With four local stations – including the old Steyning Line’s Christ’s Hospital – poised to lose their ticket offices, more of these memories need to be gathered. These accounts aren’t just interesting for the historian but are crucial in remembering a way of life that already seems very distant.

Businesses to benefit from Southwater exhibition The Resident columnist and bestselling business author Dee Blick is one of three business gurus sharing their expertise with people attending the Southwater Business Show this Sunday, September 18. Dee will be holding an Ultimate Marketing on a Shoestring masterclass at what is billed as an inspirational one-day event for local businesses. In addition, social media thought leader Peter Waller is running a masterclass on the power of social media and the practical accounting expert Rick Parish will be sharing essential tips on how to be tax efficient in business. The one-day business show is free to attend and is being held at The Southwater Leisure Centre on Pevensey Road. Yes, it’s started already – the Christmas campaign to get town centre businesses dressing their windows has been officially launched, and The Resident is a sponsor. Dressed for Success, organised by Horsham Unlimited with the help of Horsham District Council, encourages shops, cafes, non-retail outlets and other vendors in the area to dress up their displays and get into the Christmas spirit. The first ten businesses to sign up to the campaign will receive expert help from marketing business Metamorphosis at a subsidised rate. Meanwhile any other business that wants to join in the campaign can also benefit from coaching services at reasonable prices from the company. The public will be able to vote for their favourite shop window in categories such as best independent (sponsored by The Resident), quirkiest, best market stall and best nonretail outlet. Those that take part are expected

to benefit from increased footfall and exposure in the press in the lead up to Christmas. Around 70 people attended an event to mark the launch of the 2011 Dressed for Success, from restaurants, banks, accountants and other retailers. Sarah Ediss, a partner at the main sponsor for Dressed for Success, Spofforths, said: “The launch event was a great success and we are proud to be a sponsor of this fantastic campaign. A number of local business people attended the party and we really enjoyed networking with them. A tattooist and body artist has set up her own business, called Identity, in Horsham, offering tattoos and semi-permanent makeup. 21 year-old Emma Salatas trained in London and Cyprus, where permanent makeup is used widely, and has also taken part in an apprenticeship scheme helping her to learn the craft. The young businesswoman says that her passion for art forms the basis of everything she does. “I have loved art from a very young age and it was quite a natural progression into this line of work. I really love it and I’m a real perfectionist”, Emma said. The body artist knows what a big step it can be for someone who wants to get a tattoo or have semipermanent makeup, which is why she makes things as easy and relaxed as possible for her clients. She said: “I am always conscious of the fact that people might be a little nervous or unsure about coming in. That’s why I always draw tattoo designs on paper first, so people can see exactly what they are getting. “Also, they can bring in their own design to show me or select something from my books”. Horsham’s glitterati lit up an otherwise dreary night last week, at the opening of Restaurant Tristan’s new café bar and lounge. Owner Tristan Mason, who opened his restaurant on East Street in 2008, has now expanded, taking over the shop below and refurbishing it to create a new, more spacious ground floor area for customers. The new café bar and lounge is now open and serves food and drinks, including breakfast, light lunches, tea, coffee and cakes as well as providing a comfortable place for restaurant customers to have pre or post-dinner drinks.

Tristan, who is also head chef at the restaurant, said: “Everything I’ve done in this restaurant since I opened three years ago has been about the customer. The food, wine choices, interior and service has always been about giving them the best. I’m still waiting to treat myself to a new kitchen because I’ve focused on all the customer areas! “That’s why I’ve opened up this café bar downstairs. It will make the dining experience even better. People can come here for a drink before we take them to their table, or even relax with a nice scotch afterwards. And people are welcome here during the day for drinks and food as well. The new entrance directly off East Street is much nicer too.” A selection of the restaurant’s customers, friends and family and local business people attended the launch party, where everyone enjoyed prosecco and canapés made in the kitchens above. Natasha Weeds, a friend of Tristan and his partner Candy, attended the event and said: “It’s lovely in here. The décor is beautiful, the atmosphere is great and we are really proud of our friend. Can’t wait to come back in.” Customers can expect the high standards that Tristan has become renowned for. The chef, who has previously worked for a Michelin starred restaurant, is notoriously critical of his own work and strives for perfection in every dish he creates or that leaves his kitchen. So with an exquisite lounge bar and a top class chef and service, surely he has finished perfecting the restaurant now? “Nearly”, he said.

Alice has made it through to the regional finals and will perform at the competition’s regional live showcases in front of an audience of hundreds and the judging panel. But it’s not only those who go all the way who will benefit from Open Mic UK. Acts taking part will be offered songwriting courses and masterclasses and get crucial exposure within the industry in front of record company bosses, agencies, the BBC and national and regional press. Winners also get thrust into the limelight, with plenty of media interest and coverage. Last year’s under 16’s winner, Hatty Keane, has been signed to BMG Music and has been featured in plenty of press, performed live sets alongside Tinchy Stryder and Roll Deep. South of 55th bring Chicago to Horsham Homecoming for one man and his show One man, ten characters. Local comedian Tim Fifield brings his sell-out show, which he performed in Crawley earlier this year, to his hometown – Horsham! On Saturday, September 17, meet Bertram, Reg, James, Derek, Elvis, Chevron, Grace, Vernon, Bobby and a dog. The show, which Fifield performs entirely on his own, takes a look at life today, and deals with issues such as death, divorce, plastic bags and vegetarian children. ‘Not What We Expected’ at The Capitol will see Tim performing in front of his biggest audience yet. South of 55th, the band influenced by the Chicago blues scene, is about to make two appearances in Horsham, following their success at the Festival of Sound. The five-piece will play at the Malt Shovel on Saturday, September 17 and The Tanners Arms on October 1. As a result of a migration of workers from the ‘deep south’ of America, the foundations for much of today’s music were laid in Chicago. Blues fan and front man of South of 55th, Neil Thompson, said: “Everything we play was a hit in its own right, and from the Windy City or not it has generated the vibe of the 50s, 60s and 70s clubs where it was popular.” A two-week visit to Chicago

researching the Blues culture has given the band a valuable insight. Neil added: “Just playing the music isn’t the whole picture. Interaction with the audience is vital - they are out to be entertained.” The name South of 55th refers to the neighbourhoods where this music was played daily. Greats from the influential Chess Records company - Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, and Willie Dixon, feature strongly in the band’s performances. “We have a vast range of experience and musical interests away from the band, but this thing really works for us all”, Neil told The Resident. Tied to the Mast formed just 18 months ago and have already recorded their own EP with original material and are currently working on new tracks. Their songs Plain Lazy and Heartbreaker can be downloaded from iTunes. Most of the band are from Horsham, with a guitarist and keyboard player from Brighton. I currently let out my property and have noticed a number of agents offering discounted rates, why is there so much difference in what the agents charge?

To answer this question we first must consider the current rental climate. With the more challenging property market and lack of accessible lending for many potential purchasers who lack larger deposits, the lettings market is booming! With a relatively low level of stock and dramatically increased demand for property to rent, good quality rented accommodation is in short supply and rental prices have been on the up all year. For landlords the current market conditions are very advantageous through increased rental revenues, decreased void periods (when the property is empty and not earning you rent), this has been reflected in the increased number of investors buying properties to rent, as the weaker residential market is another advantage for landlords, who are able to buy stock in at reduced levels and still benefit from increased rental values, it really is a ‘win win’ market for landlords at present! Having established that demand is far out stripping supply for rental properties, agents have to be far more competitive with their charges in order to win or retain landlords business. Unlike the larger companies, smaller independent companies like us have much lower overheads to cover, with smaller offices and smaller teams, managing smaller portfolios of properties. In short we do not have to charge you as much money in order to make a profit! Do reduced charges lead to reduced service levels? Actually, we believe that this is quite the opposite; the feedback from our existing clients is that we offer a better service. We are able to charge less because our business model is far more efficient. When you instruct a smaller independent agent like Munslow Bailey Gray, you will often be dealing with a far more experienced agent, we have all worked within the property markets for many years, rather than managing a larger business for a large corporation, we have chosen to operate our own smaller company, offering our clients personal hands on service, coupled with our extensive experience and market knowledge spanning decades rather than years! For landlords with existing properties where tenancies are coming to an end, or new landlords entering the market, the message is fairly clear. Do not assume that a large company charging you high fees will be the best option for you, consider these other factors? Am I dealing with an experienced agent who fully understands all the ups and downs of the property cycle? Am I just paying a premium for a large office and too many staff? Is the agent going to have enough time and motivation to look after my property if they are already managing a large portfolio of other properties paying much higher fees? Is the agent’s fee structure transparent or are they negotiating back until they secure the highest possible fee out of me? Have you read all the small print, are there any hidden costs now or in the future, they can mount up very quickly? Would it not be far easier to deal with straight talking, local people I feel I can trust? Should I simply be getting better value from my agent? In short, the current rental market is very competitive and as a landlord it is possible to benefit both from higher rental values, lower void periods and reduced agent’s fees, without compromising on service and arguably getting more experienced better qualified advice. I have a property that I am considering letting out but am concerned about the suitability of prospective tenants that come forward. Can you let me know what reference checks should be carried out.

At Leaders we take the whole process of referencing extremely seriously. Clearly it is not in our interests, or the interests of our Landlords, to introduce problem tenants who may have affordability issues or poor tenant history. Full credit checks should be carried out on any prospective tenant. This will detail whether there is any adverse data held on the applicant i.e. County Court Judgments, bankruptcies, voluntary arrangements and certificates of satisfaction. Credit checks will also search for detrimental data at addresses linked to the addresses supplied. Fraud checks are made for inconsistencies with previous applications made by the applicant. An income reference must be obtained where the applicant is employed, self-employed or retired. Income and employment status i.e. position, contract and duration is checked using employer references and/or supporting documentation. Where an applicant has recently lived in rental accommodation, their previous landlord is contacted to establish whether there were payment issues or if any dilapidation was recorded. We will also check affordability by way of our income vs. rental criteria. It is not just the monthly rent that the tenant needs to be able to cover but all the bills associated with living in the property i.e. council tax, utility bills, telephone etc as well as general living costs. All Leaders’ tenants are thoroughly screened by an external credit referencing company before a tenancy is agreed to determine their suitability and their ability to meet the requirements of the Tenancy Agreement. Our referencing criteria is considered one of the strictest simply because we think it should be. Revolutionary new first time buyer mortgages from Cubitt & West At last, some good news for hardpressed first time buyers in Surrey, Sussex and Hampshire! New tenant demand again outpaced supply of rental property in the three months to July, as many continued to turn to the lettings sector, says the latest RICS Residential Lettings Survey. As a result of this, rents continued to increase although the survey indicates that the pace of growth moderated slightly, with 34 per cent more surveyors reporting a rise in rents rather than a fall (compared with 42 per cent in the previous three month period). Significantly, the imbalance between demand and supply is thought likely to persist with the survey results suggesting that further gains in rents are likely over the coming months. One of the main drivers of the strong demand for rental property continues to be would-be buyers who have moved to the lettings market after struggling to find mortgage finance, or first-time buyers unable to meet lenders’ deposit requirements. As a result, 25 per cent more chartered surveyors reported a rise in demand than a fall. Paul Weller, managing director of the UK’s largest independently owned letting specialist, Leaders,

said: “This research from RICS comes at the same time as the National Housing Federation’s prediction that home ownership in England will slump to just 63.8 per cent over the next decade as a result of an entire generation being effectively locked out of the housing market. “This obviously means that – like our European neighbours, where low home ownership has always been the norm - more people will be turning to the private rented sector, which is in urgent need of new investment. :A larger PRS with rental choice, and reduced home ownership over the longer term, would produce a more stable housing market. “With desire for home ownership still strong, capital values are expected to rise over the medium to long term, so investors buying property to let now will benefit not only from strong rental demand and high rental values, but increasing capital growth as well. “There are many exciting opportunities to invest at the moment; the key to success is obtaining expert, impartial advice from a local letting specialist on where and what type of property will make the best investment.”

Yet despite its highly competitive starting price, the Zafira Tourer ES 1.8 (140PS) will come equipped with a comprehensive range of kit as standard, such as: air conditioning, DAB, cruise control, MP3/Aux In connections, 6 airbags, 7-speaker sound system, active headrests, and Flex7 seating. Sitting above the ES in the range will be Exclusiv, SRi, SE and Elite trims. The Zafira Tourer will be positioned above the current Zafira model in Vauxhall’s line-up and is set to raise the bar for design, luxury, flexibility and innovation in the MPV sector.

We feel a little bit aggrieved as it was a blatant foul. I’m going to go and talk to the referee to get his version. That’s changed the game. “I’m gutted for the lads. I thought we were outstanding in the second half and, performance-wise, I’ve got no complaints. We’ve told them if they keep playing like that and believing in each other, the results will come. “We’ve thrown together a team of players in a very short time. Credit to them – they all want to play for Horsham, they all want to listen and all want to learn. “A lot of teams would have dropped their heads when the third goal went in, but we kept going. We were much fitter than them and that’s a massive positive. A lot of games will be won and lost on fitness.”

New season, same result for Zak and Jake Prolific strikers Zak Comber and Jake Legrange started the new season as they spent most of last – on the scoresheet for Horsham’s youngsters. The deadly duo helped Horsham U16 to a 4-1 win against Wealden U16, newcomers in the Sussex Sunday Youth League. The young Hornets were without four players, including influential

captain Connor Cushing, but Comber opened the scoring with a strong leftfooted shot. Wealden’s Alex Saunders skimmed the crossbar before debutant Harry Smith crossed for Legrange to finish neatly. Ryan Hughes cut Horsham’s lead and Wealden struck a post from a penalty, but Comber hit his second from 25 yards and Greg Gander

added the fourth. Horsham U15 eased into the second round of the Arun and Chichester Youth League Cup, beating Worthing Minors Athletic U15 5-0. Horsham U14 made a winning start in the Sussex Sunday Youth League, Finn Bigg scoring twice in a 4-1 success against Hawks U14. Charlie Belton and Liam Clarke were also on target as Horsham overcame the loss of goalkeeper Kieran Wootton through injury. Jack Reeves played most of the match in goal.

It was a joyous few days for Horsham YMCA manager Sammy Donnelly as his side produced back-toback wins. YM landed their second win of the season with a patchy 3-1 home win over Hassocks before slamming four past Chichester away from home. George Hillier and strike partner Dean Wright netted for YM inside the first 15 minutes against the Robins. An own goal after great work by substitute Timmy Martin all but sealed the points midway through the second half. Hassocks captain Stuart Faith reduced the lead, but YM dismissed any chance of another comeback trauma and closed out the final 20 minutes with little trouble. Donnelly said: “Hassocks are a side that have never given up and they showed and proved that. I think we can play better, and we have played better, but I’ll take the three points. “We closed ranks a lot the whole game and defended in numbers, which I think made us more of a defensive unit. We were far more organised.” At Chichester, Timmy Martin finished neatly before the Lilywhites equalised on the stroke of half time. Hillier netted twice and Lee Wood completed the scoring as the visitors ran out comfortable winners. Most of our other County League teams endured a week of hard-luck stories. In seven league and cup matches, only Forest managed to secure a victory. The Tangerines produced a second-half goal fest to sink Ringmer Reserves 8-2 in the Mid Sussex Senior Charity Cup. Andrew Lampard continued his rich vein of form with a sublime hattrick, taking his tally to seven goals in five matches. Paul White (two), Elliott Hawkes (two) and Shaun Findlay also scored. Steyning were unable to transfer their improved league form into a week of cup games, as they lost 1-0 at Lordswood in the FA Vase and 4-0 at AFC Uckfield in the John O’Hara League Cup. Storrington lost at home for the second time in Division 2. Strikes from James Davis and Craig Grantham were not enough to subdue a rampant Dominic Clarke, who fired an impressive hat-trick to snatch a 3-2 away win for Bexhill. Broadbridge Heath are struggling for consistency in Division 3 after being outplayed by Pease Pottage. Late solo efforts from Perry Monks and Michael Wood only masked Heath’s poor performance in a 5-2 home defeat. Roffey and TD Shipley continue to flounder. Aaron Jeal bagged the consolation in Roffey’s 4-1 loss at Newhaven and Shipley lost 2-0 at Rottingdean.

Horsham overcame Park House to start their London 3 South East campaign with a win on a drizzly afternoon at Coolhurst. The home side started strongly, enjoying a lot of possession and playing most of the rugby in the opposition’s half. It wasn’t long before Horsham won their first penalty, but Will Johnson missed it and the game stayed scoreless. Horsham were forced to make a change only a quarter of an hour in when Arun Thompson replaced the injured James Whiting. The first opportunity to score came when Johnson was unable to pick up the ball, due to an inconsistent bounce, and could only knock on when he would have been clean through. Park House gradually started to feel their way back into the game, winning a few lineouts and scrums and enjoying more possession in Horsham’s half. The game got scrappier, with neither team managing any flowing moves while scrums and lineouts become all too frequent. Horsham finally made the breakthrough when a strong maul, off the back of a lineout, allowed prop Nick Bell to race over for a try which Johnson converted. Good passages of play followed, including one involving Tom Wright and Liam Yeates which led to a lineout 5m from the try line. The lineout caused a ruck from which Adam Harman was able to give Horsham their second try of the game, again converted by Johnson. Horsham started to dominate and their position was further

strengthened when the Park House scrum half was sin-binned for killing the ball at the break down. Horsham were awarded another penalty, which Johnson easily converted to take the home side’s lead to 17-0 at half time. The second half started with Park House putting the pressure on Horsham, but they were unable to make it count and missed a penalty. Despite repeatedly running at the Horsham backline, Park House never quite had the cutting edge to open up the defence. And they were eventually punished when Horsham counter-attacked. Grantham-Hill brilliantly intercepted a slack pass and ran from the halfway line for Horsham’s third converted try. Horsham’s defence was solid and Park House rarely managed to gain more than 5m at a time. But the visitors eventually managed to split the defence, leaving their second row with space on the wing and the simple task of putting the ball down. Horsham were denied a bonus point as they couldn’t quite get over the line for a fourth try, but this was a solid start to the season. Coach Mal Chumbley said: “It wasn’t as fluid and precise as we would have liked, but it was a good win. Considering injuries, I’m very pleased with that and the attitude of the team.” Horsham face a local derby at Crawley tomorrow (Saturday).

Due to international fixtures and the Football League computer, it will be almost a month between Albion’s last home game and their next. For Albion junkies like me, there’s only one option – an away day. Last Saturday I was picked up for the short drive to Burgess Hill, where two of our regular away-day companions should have been waiting. After a quick phone call, it was clear they weren’t going to make it so we jumped on a train. At Gatwick we met another couple of mates and transferred to the Reading train. About 50 Brighton fans were easily identifiable from their replica shirts, particularly those wearing the rather garish away shirt. The trip to Reading passed quickly with a couple of beers and plenty of football-related chat. We had made our connection and were Bristolbound before we knew it. An hour later we tucked into a fried breakfast, mushrooms not black pudding, and a pint. Our missing companions, Simon and Jay, were only 30 minutes from joining us. The pub was full of Albion fans, including fellow North West Sussex Seagull Nigel Offord, looking forward to the match. As is normal, the local constabulary turned up. Sussex PC Darren Balkham travels to all Albion games, knows many fans by name and helps make sure everyone has an enjoyable day. We moved to a pub within a short walk of Ashton Gate, then made our way to the away end to join 1,700 more Albion fans. Albion again played well and after several good opportunities finally scored to win the game, Ashley Barnes finding the net in front of the travelling fans. Game won, three more points secured and Albion still top of the Championship, it was time to make our way home. Bristol Temple Meads station is a 40-minute walk from Ashton Gate or a £1 bus ride. Guess which one we took! Seventy very happy fans on a double-decker made a noisy trip back to the station to catch the 6pm to London Paddington. I caught the tube to Victoria and a train to Haywards Heath before a short taxi ride to home sweet home. Unfortunately, our two sleepy companions who had missed the first train of the day are also nicotine junkies and they managed to miss the last train of the day too. Oh well lads, see you next time.

Three teams of young cricketers are celebrating major successes. Horsham U16 won the IDentilam Sussex Champions League final at Horsham CC. Ben Shoare (53) and Tom Endacott (58, three catches and a stumping) put on a century opening partnership in the semi-final as Horsham (158-3) beat Hellingly U16 by 42 runs. Endacott struck a magnificent 110 in the final against Goring U16, helping Horsham to a massive 189-3. His remarkable innings included 15 fours and four big sixes – one into the tennis courts and another which led to the ball being lost. Jack Dean was unbeaten on 36. Goring finished 53 short on 136-1. Roffey U10 won the Sussex MKK Finals at the PROBIZ County Ground, Hove, despite losing their first group game against St Peters. Group wins against Eastbourne U10 and Midhurst U10 and a semifinal success against Fletching U10 meant Roffey faced St Peters again, this time in the final. Outstanding bowling by Max McAteer, Jamie Atkins, Josh Dance and Callum Jeal limited St Peters to 213 before Roffey finished on 231. Other members of the successful squad were Samuel Smith, Tom Colbran, Morgan Spooner, Conor Griffiths and Richard Bailey. Roffey are looking for new players in all age groups. Highlights of Horsham’s fielding were a superb run out by Amy Jeremy, a clever stumping by Charlotte Walder and a brilliant catch by Georgina Humphries. Solid batting by Tara Norris and Ellie Monk helped Horsham to victory.

Horsham Ambassadors U7 scored 32 goals without reply in two matches against Maidenbower U7. The first match finished 17-0, thanks in part to Luke Harrison who showed good skill on the ball through the centre of the pitch and was rewarded with seven goals. Charlie Gibson and Morgan Prill dominated the wings and both scored from long range. Alex Power tackled well throughout, Nico Massimo and Tom Marney defended strongly and goalkeeper Abid Rahat stayed focused while enjoying a quiet game. It was Maidenbower’s first match together and the Crawley side showed commitment and enthusiasm from start to finish. The result in the second match was not notably less convincing, 15-0. Joe Murray scored the first goal to open the floodgates. James Denman, Dane McConnell, Max Morris and Archie Nicholls also netted. Broadbridge Heath U16 beat Forest Row U16 4-2 in Division C of the Horsham and District Youth League. Heath’s Adam Bolitho and Richard Castle broke out of their half with a skilful set of one-twos, creating a chance for Tom Chapman which went just wide. Forest Row opened the scoring, but Heath broke the length of the pitch as left back Kyle Hannah set up Richard Castle for an equaliser. Castle scored again soon after half time and almost completed a hattrick before Bolitho made it 3-1 with a well-struck shot. The visitors halved their deficit, but man of the match Oli Young completed the scoring with a penalty. In the battle of last season’s top two, Royal United U16 overcame Dorking Saints U16 4-1, with goals by Alex Parsons, Greg Gander, Jake Legrange and Zac Love. A patient performance saw Southwater U18 progress to the next round of the County Cup by beating Predators U16 4-1. Impressive Elliott Wallace was more than a match for the Predators attack, while Zach Haulkham (two), Josh Tobutt and Ryan Thomas got on the scoresheet.

Horse-mad Harriet, 15, targets the main event Youth Eventing

London 2012 will come too soon, but Harriet Upton already has her eyes on the Olympics. The 15-year-old from Warnham, who attends Farlington School, was chosen by the U18 national selectors of British Eventing to compete in France. One of the youngest riders in a squad of 18 juniors, Harriet finished 17th in a section of 130 juniors and seniors. She was the top junior rider from the South East, third junior rider overall and beat six of the world’s top riders. Harriet, who is a member of Crawley and Horsham Pony Club, said: “It was such an honour to compete on behalf of my country and a dream that I have had for such a long time. “It was an amazing experience and has made me realise how much I want to do this. “My goal is to get to the Olympics. I’d like that to be in 2016, but I may

still be too young – not that I am going to let that stop me. “I am very focused and am going to continue to train and work hard and hope that some fantastic horses might come my way. “I especially would really like to thank Jill Chator for letting me ride her wonderful mare Estella. Without her, I would never have got this opportunity. Jill is such a support and comes along to nearly all my competitions.” Over the Summer, Harriet has been training hard and riding up to six horses a day, most of them youngsters. She does not have a groom and does all the work herself. She trains with event rider Ken Spencer, dressage rider Mel Breen, Olympic medallist Kristina Cook, Great Britain eventing junior Gill Watson and Britain U18 coach Caroline Jeanne. Harriet hopes to pursue a career in eventing and is looking for a horse at intermediate level to enable her to be considered for the 2012 Europeans.

Sport in Brief Motor Sport Jolyon Palmer endured a frustrating final GP2 meeting of the season in Monza. Racing in his debut season of the F1 feeder series, the 20-year-old from Southwater was denied an almost certain maiden points finish after his best qualifying performance. He said: “Michael Herck broke stupidly late going into the first corner and smashed into a few cars. I made the corner but then had nowhere to go as Josef Kral was broadside across the track and rolled backwards.” Consequently starting the sprint race from the back of the grid, the Arden International driver (pictured) gained seven places to finish 19th. West Chiltington driver Kieran Vernon, 21, will race in the Porsche Carrera Cup at Rockingham, Northamptonshire, this weekend. After qualifying at 1.50pm tomorrow (Saturday), the two races will start at 10am and 1.10pm on Sunday. The second will be shown live on ITV4 and the first may also be shown at some time in the afternoon. Vernon, who took over from champion Tim Harvey midway through the season, is looking to build on an impressive seventh place at Knockhill, Fife.

Golf Cottesmore Golf and Country Club reached the Division 3 final in the Sussex Ladies Golf Union championship at Copthorne. They lost 4-3 to Cowdray Park, so finished as runners-up for the third successive year. West Sussex won Division 1 and Division 2. Cottesmore’s Mary Grange said: “So near, but yet again runnersup.
