It’s another week in which our pubs and restaurants are the talk of the town. The Boars Head, which closed suddenly earlier this year, has re-opened in equally rapid circumstances, with new owners, new paint job and a new menu. The four strong management team have put the emphasis firmly on food, and on restoring the Boars to its rural roots. As Carmela’s, a new Italian at the top of Denne Road, continues to make progress as it strives for an August opening, Strada has unveiled plans for a dramatic facelift. The restaurant, in East Street, will close from August 19th, to emerge 10 days later with a £100,000 refurbishment and new colour scheme. But without doubt, the word of the week is Wabi. A far from generous two star review in The Guardian triggered extensive local response after the article was posted on the Horsham Facebook page, which has 3,500 members.

The story has ensured that there’s no shortage of people with a view on the new Japanese r, which opened at the former Horse and Groom pub site in June, whether they have been there or not. Taken aback by the negative publicity after the initial euphoric local welcoming it received, the staff at Wabi have been asked to defend its prices. Of course, we couldn’t comment unless we had tested Wabi for ourselves. So we have, and you can read the first local review of the restaurant inside today’s paper. We’ve also been to The Boars Head, which may not yet be quite what its owners hope it one day will be, but offers good reason to be optimistic for the future of this wonderful 16th century pub on the edge of town. And do let us know your thoughts on Horsham’s eating out scene. We’ll be kicking off a letters page next week and would love to hear your views. See Page 11 for details.

REVIEW: WABI

Plush Japanese faces backlash As if getting a scathing review in The Guardian newspaper wasn’t bad enough, somebody had to go and post said review up on the Horsham Facebook page! And with it’s 3,500 ‘friends’ it’s ensured that Wabi, the new Japanese restaurant on East Street, is once again the most talked about topic in town. Having soaked up the praise lavished upon the restaurant when it opened a month

ago, the owners and staff have to endure an almighty backlash. The jellyfish are dead, those who have tried the food are reporting sky high prices and half-full stomachs, and many people seem to be revelling in the fact that such an ambitious, high class establishment suddenly finds itself with its back against the wall. There’s no shortage of people willing to have a dig, and Wabi, it’s fair to say, has a job on its hands to win over the people of Horsham. It seems that in this case, there is little truth in the ‘there’s no such thing as bad publicity’ theory. It would be easy to jump on the bandwagon, write if off as cold, charmless, extortionately priced pomposity, but we should consider this: When was the last time The Guardian came to review a restaurant in our market town? They were not here when Cote opened, or when Sanmae flung

open its doors. Will they be back for Carmela’s? With all due respect to them, perhaps you need to be something special to even register on their radar. So perhaps a bad review in The Guardian is a bit like saying Emile Heskey is a terrible footballer... Okay, bad example. But Wabi deserves a fair hearing from Horsham. They deserve it because they have invested in our town. Having pumped in - at a guess - £1million in the building, they have contributed massively to the wave of optimism sweeping across East Street and Park Place. “This isn’t London!” plea some critics. But it’s not completely out of sorts with the area. I’m sure the ladies over the road at Cape Scarlett, which sells high end female fashion brands, and La Source, which sells quality Italian and French furniture, among others, see Wabi’s arrival as a blessing. And no doubt the chiefs at Horsham District Council almost spat out a mouthful of vending machine coffee all over the latest budget cut proposals when they heard of Wabi’s interest!

And let’s face it - it’s better than a boarded up former drug den, isn’t it? That being said, it doesn’t mean we have to bow down to the new Japanese. So The Resident went to test the food, the atmosphere, the value, for itself. Firstly, yes the jellyfish are dead. They didn’t last long. Before opening, Wabi hailed: “(We) will be incorporating one of the most spectacular aquarium installations in the country, housing biodiverse species such as jellyfish with stateof-the-art design and display holding more than 2000 litres of salt water...” Unfortunately, nobody advised them against putting the tank next to the window, where a rise in temperature might kill off the jellyfish. We’ve had a hot July.... But there’s a chiller being installed soon, and while some staff have suggested a switch to fish, the jellyfish will return soon, and hopefully the average life expectancy of a Wabi sea creature may go up.

High class restaurant defends its prices

The downstairs area, especially the Sushi bar, is tastefully laid out and bright, and the costly water feature makes it an enjoyable place to enjoy a cocktail, which are incidentally superb, but yes, very expensive (from £7). The upstairs area is darker, a little sleepier, and they do have wall plugs, as the service counter needs power, after all.

ities, but there’s no harm in that. So then, to the food. Which is expensive. Expensive is not the same as value for money, but a meal for two at Wabi with a bottle of wine or sake is going to cost you at least £100, and probably nearer £150. There’s some things that will make your average modestlypaid punter gasp. A 150g Striploin Steak sets you back

There may be no expense spared, but It isn’t the most vibrant, warm atmosphere, although the small booths by the window offer more light. Perhaps it’ll take a little time to create a good atmosphere at Wabi. One of the issues is that, currently, many diners seem unable to relax. We’re not used to Japanese dining here in Horsham, so even ordering can be a challenge. What’s the difference between ‘Oozara’ and ‘Tempura’? Will I look silly if I order a Sake with something off the ‘Wagyu’ option? Please help! Preconception results in diner’s falsely representing themselves. It’s as though even just being there, in Horsham’s pricey new restaurant, means you must know something about Japanese cuisine!

£45. Crispy Duck Leg Confit is £13.50. If they filled you up, it wouldn’t be an issue, but they don’t. You have to order half a dozen dishes to share between two to make a filling meal, and many people have reported that they have spent £100 plus and come out hungry. We know of one person who filled up at The Best chicken house after visiting Wabi. The Best! The staff though are keen to defend the prices. Australian chef Scott Hallsworth. who spent six years at Nobu London before he was Executive chef at the Mirai Restaurant Group in Dubai and Bahrain, admitted he was taken aback by the Guardian review and the negative feedback. He said: “You don’t go to try out a £90,000 BMW if you

Looking around, you can see people shifting in their seat while getting to grips with the menu, or trying to pretend that money is not an option while inevitably doing the sums in their head. By that mark, I found the relatively informal, friendly staff, to be a welcome relaxer. There’s no doubt about it, they are still finding their feet, learning about the food and the traditions, but they are keen to help, attentive, and unprompted made the effort to offer drinking suggestions to complement the food. If anything, there’s too many of them, interlinking responsibil-

don’t have the money, and go ‘how much!’ at the price. “You buy what you can afford, be it a Vauxhall or whatever. People look at the £45 steak, but of course the steak that we buy here is better and costs more than what you’ll find at other places. It is relative.” Basing many of our choices on recommendations, we opted for two cold appetisers, Yellow Sashimi with Kizami Wasabi and Citrus Soy (£11.50) and Chilled Somen Noodles with wasabi, ginger, Tempura crumbs and dried Shiitake broth. The Sashimi, already a pop-

ular choice, is excellent, high quality Yellowtail and the citrus soy was plate-lickingly lovely. The noodles though, while great fun in that it gives you the opportunity to create your own broth, offers little for the money. It leaves the same kind of feeling you have after buying an item of clothing that you later realise you’re never going to wear. The hot appetiser, a Crispy Squid Kara-Age with Yuzu Kosho Salt and Green Chilli Dipping Sauce (£8.50) was one of the more generously portioned appetisers, and we recommend it for those looking to play it safe. The green chilli sauce, coupled with the sauce, gave it a delightful kick without leaving an overpowering aftertaste, and was great with the sake. Next up was a Confit Rump of Lamb, served with seared asparagus, was excellently cooked, and another of the more filling dishes., falling apart at a gentle nudge of the chopsticks. Another off the specials board was Beef Tobinyaki, beef fillet with onions and peppers. It was beautiful but brief, and it’s the kind of dish that might need to experience some growth if Wabi is to shake those “ridiculously expensive” allegations. Next up, Sauteed Jumbo Shrimp, with Yuzu Truffle, Egg Sauce and Yuzu Tobiko. Again a fantastic offering, with a hefty price tag - £15.50. We also tried the sushi, Salmon Gravad Lax with pickled cucumber and dill (£7.50). We’ll see more sushi soon, as the Wabi team are expected to open a Just Sushi in Swan Walk before long. There may be messages on Facebook about popping along to Tesco to buy a Sushi meal deal for £3.99 instead, but that’s not only off the mark, but unfair. The food here is excellent, and it’s something new for us too in a town dominated by Italians. Really, while there’s something perversely self satisfying, amusing even, in seeing the mighty fall, we should at least support what Wabi is trying to achieve. Would we go back? Very special occasions, yes. On a regular basis, no, because unless you earn well beyond your means, you can’t realistically sit down, relax and enjoy your meal at these prices. But for those that don’t wriggle uncomfortably when their partner is weighing up the £19.50 Chilean Seabass, then it’s the best option in town. Let’s hope that there are enough people in the town that fall into this category, because although some may not appreciate Wabi, we do need it.

The Boars Head’s fireplace is now back in action and (right) Simon Haggan enjoys a drink outside the new look Boars, which opened its doors again this weekend

Boars bounces back So the Boars Head is back. When we last left it, The Boars had lost much of what once endeared it to the Land Rover driving, Welly wearing, dog walking folk that helped give the pub its rural vibe. For example, the Inglenook fireplace was partially hidden by a sofa. There was nothing really wrong with it, and it was a popular spot in particular for youngsters who enjoyed the laid back vibe of the marquee area and the regular live music nights. The former landlord made

an effort to revitalise the restaurant area, but it failed to turn around the fortunes of the pub. For a short period after closing, the Boars was a sight for sore eyes. Passers-by would check firstly to look for any signs of work, and secondly to see what letters had fallen off the ARS HAD. Now it’s back in new hands. Four pairs of new hands, to be exact. Simon Haggan and Reuben Waller, who have worked together before at a highly regarded pub in The Cotswolds before, once voted

exclusive use for

the 2nd best in the country, are in charge of the restaurant area, with the bar run by Treacy Mace and Ian Johnson, The brewery, Hall and Woodhouse, has just invested heavily in The Olive Branch (formerly the Green Dragon) in The Bishopric. There’s been nothing like the £600,000 invested there for The Boars, but the pub has been given a facelift. There’s a new sign, featuring a leaner, meaner Boar seemingly crossbred with a Sabretooth Tiger. Looking down from the outside area, a pleasant pathway

has been created and strawberries, vegetables and plants put down witha border of railway sleepers. Like the exterior, the interior has been given a big clean up. There’s a new colour scheme dominated by brown, which we haven’t decided if it gives it a retro feel or makes it look like your Grandma’s living room in 1978. One thing we’re more certain of though is the exhibiting of pictures by local artists in the restaurant area. Some excellent work by the likes of Angela Brittain, Kerto

Coppel-Catlin, Alison Ingram, Lindsay Pearson, Sharon Norman and Susan Tindall is displayed. Originally the four looked at The Crabtree in Lower Beeding, but for various reasons this was not feasible, they turned their attentions instead to the Boars Head, noting they “saw the potential of the pub straight away”. Gone are the sofas and the music nights (although Jazz may return) as the four managers set about forging a new reputation for The Boars. Simon said: “We have been

warmly received. People seem really pleased that the pub is back doing what it used to. “Hall and Woodhouse have allowed us to do essentially what we wanted to do. We stated our proposal and they were more than happy. “Somebody has obviously spent a lot of time here and took great care, but that has fallen by the wayside. It has stunning views, and a history that you can’t just put into a building and deserves better. As well as building on the

Taking the chef’s advice (although it was clear from the menu ,which is not over-exhausted by options, that the focus is very much on seafood) we opted for the roasted fillet of pollock (£13.50) with cured spicy sausage, and new potatoes and roasted tomatoes (not yet plucked from the gardens though).

Of course, there are drawbacks; the team get a call in the early hours from Newhaven with an update on the catch. And for the products sourced from further afield, the emphasis is on Fairtrade, so the coffee - for instance - is from Sumatra. Simon added: “We choose sustainable food, so we tend to

WE’RE ALWAYS LOOKING TO CHANGE THE SPECIALS Treacy Mace and Ian Johnson, half the new team at the Boars Head Throughout the night, the service was attentive and, as it was Simon serving all the tables, well informed. But what is perhaps best about The Boars Head is the price - they may well seek the freshest catch from the coast, but the cost is not transfered to you. The prices are more than reasonable.

While many might be saddened that this is another wonderful public house that is, essentially, a restaurant first, the new owners have at least made a commitment to change little at the front of the pub. You can still stroll in after a walk across Denne Park, have a pint of Sussex and sit by the fire while reading the paper.

We would return to the Boars Head, even though its location means that its still not an ideal spot to take children. But the food is good, the welcome warm, the price is right and there’s a new energy about the place. Maybe The Boars can hog the limelight once again. Call 01403 266554

Youth centres set for axe ‘Hey kids, you had nothing to do with the financial mess the country is currently in, but you can help pay for it.’ That’s pretty much the message from West Sussex County Council. As you’ll probably know already, the County Council is having to make big cutbacks (more on page 11) and as part of a review the youth services budget will be cut back by £2million between now and 2011/2012. Two local youth centres face the chop under the plans; Holbrook in Horsham, and Weald in Billingshurst. The new-look Youth Services comes after a consultation with young people, staff, partners and residents. At its heart would be a combination of targeted youth services for those young people at risk and improved specialist services to help very vulnerable young people, as well as working closely with the community and voluntary sector to make sure young people have access to a wide range of positive activities. The proposals would mean a more Integrated Youth Support Service by joining up the service with the Youth Offending Service and the Connexions Service.

Clean sweep for Millais

Earlier this year, the County Council said it would also focus on work with and support for vulnerable young people such as young offenders, Looked After Children, teenage parents, young people who are not in education, employment or training (NEETs), and young people with drug or alcohol problems. A report now says this approach should play a leading role, and the teams would have the flexibility to respond to targeted groups. They will also work closely with local community partnerships

when there is a specific need. The review is designed to make a £2 million reduction in the Youth Services budget money that would be re-invested into areas under growing budget pressure such as caring for growing numbers of Looked After Children. The report says there will be fewer staff and resources as a result of the proposed changes. But it says that the County Council will work closely with local communities and other partners to explore alternative options.

Centres at risk are: l Crawley – Either the Oriel or Ifield youth wing l Horsham – Weald and Holbrook l Mid Sussex – Cuckfield and the Beacon Centre at Hassocks l Worthing – Either the Sydney Walter Centre or The Place l Arun – Yapton, Rustington/Ferring l Chichester – Witterings Final decisions will be taken at the end of July by Pete Bradbury, the County Council’s Cabinet Member for Children and Families.

While you’re there can you scrub off that Graffiti? Oh, you can? Wonderful! Girls from Millais School in Horsham fashioned litter pickers and paint brushes ton Wednesday to perform a community clear up. As part of an activity week that Millais School organised to put something back into the community, 50 pupils were in Horsham Park carrying out tasks to help keep the surroundings picturesque. The girls, all aged 13, assisted Horsham District Council in doing jobs such as litter picking, painting park benches, removing brambles and painting the skate park. This ties in very well with Horsham District Council’s litter campaign, ‘Stop the Drop’. This campaign is running over the summer and combines a series of distinctive posters pointing out the dangers of litter along with targeting hotspot areas with enforcement patrols. Horsham District Council would like to say a big thank you to all the pupils who participated in the community volunteer day.

New hotel is delayed Sakakini

We might have to get used to that blue sheeting flapping in the wind! The Travelodge Hotel on Worthing Road was due to be completed at the end of July. It’s been apparent for a while that that was unlikely, but now the opening date has been pushed back to September. The problem stems from G&H Construction, who won the contract to build the Travelodge at the former site of Exchange House. The company has ceased trading, despite winning a £3.3million contract to build a new Crystal Palace Travelodge just last month. Travelodge are now in the process of appointing another contractor.

The £2.5million hotel will have 67 rooms and 13 jobs will be created all of which will be recruited via the local Job Centre. A spokesperson said: "We are really delighted to be opening our first hotel in Horsham next to the town's most famous and iconic landmark, the Shelley Fountain. “The new hotel will be an ideal base for both business and leisure travelers." Travelodge, the UK's leading budget hotel brand, announced the creation of 185 jobs this summer, with the opening of seven new hotels across the UK including Horsham. The budget hotel chain has over 390 hotels and 5,500 staff nationwide.

On Thursday 1st July, over a dozen golfers arrived at Horsham Golf and Fitness Club to have custom fit clubs made on the Wilson Tour Bus. Custom Fit experts were on hand to put them through their paces on the Flightscope 3D equipment, which tracks the flight of the ball and is used for custom fitting and golf instruction. They were lucky enough to have their clubs fitted and built on the

Wilson Tour Bus by the same team that look after Padraig Harrington, Paul Lawrie both British Open Champions and a number of other Wilson Staff players. The bus normally attends the British Open and European Tour events each week but took time out from a busy schedule to visit Horsham Golf and Fitness to complement their state of the art newly opened Custom Fitting Centre.

Natalie and Duncan Entwistle, owners of Warnham’s Greets Inn, have announced the launch of a fish & chip takeaway supper, which will be available every Friday from 59.30pm from July 23rd. Natalie said: “Starting from July 23 it will be available to takeaway or enjoy here at the inn, and, as it will all be prepared fresh to order, residents will be able to phone

ahead, so that it’s ready for when they arrive.” To celebrate this new local service, Natalie and Duncan are planning a Fish Day at The Greets, from12-9.30pm on launch day. There will be lots to savour, including a special Surf & Turf with lobster, and mini fish and chip tasters for locals in the bar.

Strada set for new look

Strada have recognised the need for a fresh look, in light of the recent additions to Horsham’s dining out options. The popular East Street restaurant will take advantage of the roadworks to close for 10 days from Monday, 19th July. When it opens on the 29th customers can check out the funky new colour scheme. We hear the dark red may make way for a white and green look...

County salts out cutbacks Well, let’s hope it doesn’t snow as much this year then... West Sussex County Council has given more details of spending reductions having to be made, and a proposed investment in salt supplies has been sacrificed. Savings must be made in the current financial year after the Government’s recent decision to cut £1.1 billion in national grants to local government. Various grant schemes in West Sussex are being reduced by £12.7 million, and one of these is the Local Area Agreement performance reward grant from the Government for meeting various service delivery targets between 20062009. The County Council administers the grants on behalf of the West Sussex Public Service Board (PSB). The PSB is madeup of a wide variety of public sector service providers including District and Borough Councils, the NHS, Police, business organisations and voluntary sector. West Sussex County Council Leader Louise Goldsmith, who

chairs the PSB and its Executive Committee, said: “All the partners fully understand that national government has to tackle the national deficit, and that will involve difficult choices. But, we do need to return to a position of sound finances and proper budgeting. “There is a tremendous commitment on behalf of all the partners to work closely together during these difficult economic times for the public services. The reductions in grants approved by the Public Service Board Executive will include a reduction in grant of £500,000 to support School Safety Zones during the next two financial years. These have been paid for from LAA grant money in the past and consist of advisory speed limit warning signs and road markings to make drivers aware they are close to schools. 110 SSZs serving 140 schools have been completed because some schemes have been designed to cover schools that are close to each other. However, the County Council says it is still hoping to com-

plete a number of schemes using finance from other sources, such as developer contributions to highway improvements. Other cuts include: l £143,000 that was to be invested in improvements to Adult Education Centres. l £400,000 to extend the County Council’s ‘Invest to Save’ fund to deliver sustained reductions in carbon dioxide emissions in public sector buildings. l Investment in additional supplies of salt in preparation for a possible repeat of last winter’s severe weather over and above the usual supply amount. There will still be extra stocks but the additional spend has been reduced from £200,000 to £100,000. The County Council has made it clear that if extra gritting salt is needed for roads at any stage during the winter, it will still be purchased. l £261,000 to assist District and Borough Councils with the preparation of their local planning documents – such as transport infrastructure studies, and assessments of the impact of new development.

Resident launches letters page The Resident will be launching a Letters to the Editor page in the coming weeks. In a desperate attempt to reduce our own workload, we’d like to hear your views on local matters and opinions on stories published in the newspaper. What do you think of Wabi? A shocking waste of money or something new and

valuable to Horsham? Was The Boars Head better as a music venue? Do we have too many stories about ghosts in the paper? Send us your views by email to ben@the-resident.co.uk or write to The Resident at: Letters to the Editor, 26 North Street, Horsham, West Sussex, RH12 1RQ. Please include your name, full address and contact phone number with all letters, as we will not publish letters without it...

Manager Isabelle Beausseron said: “We have a lot of customers here and we want to show them that we care, and give them the best. “We’re putting a lot of money into the refurbishment. The menu will be the same but it’ll be a new look for the restaurant and all of the staff are really excited about it.”

Something to smile about

Patients’ needs and expectations of dental care have changed dramatically in recent years. We went along to The Carfax Dental Practice to speak to Dental Surgeon and Principal Dr Vatsal Amin to ind out more about what modern dentistry entails and what services they provide. Dr Amin is a private dentist at the practice, with a specisl interest in cosmetic dentistry. ‘Our practice aim is to provide you and your family with the inest in dental care. We have the best of professionals backed by the latest techniques and tools to help you with not just routine dentistry, but also dentistry for the soul - cosmetic dentistry. Dentistry today is about more than just illing teeth. It really focuses on prevention and aesthetics. Patients in general have healthier teeth, but also want to have better-looking teeth in all respects… that means whiter, better proportioned and aligned teeth. More patients than ever want to retain a full complement of natural teeth for life and are therfore looking towards more complex, advanced treatments to save teeth, which may be in poor condition. Demand for more simple cosmetic procedures, such as teeth whitening, has steadily grown over recent years too.’ ‘At The Carfax Dental Practice we offer a whole range of the inest dentistry and cosmetic techniques including smile makeovers which may or may not include implants. We all deserve a beautiful smile and we can help you achieve that too’. ‘Many patients can afford private dentistry, but are apprehensive about booking an initial appointment for a number of reasons. Maybe they haven’t been to a dentist in years, often they are worried about what the costs might be,

or they feel very self concious about how their teeth look now. There really is no reason why they can’t consult a dentist and ind out what can be done to improve their smile - it can be a life changing experience!’

So what exactly does a smile makeover involve?

‘For those patients with relatively healthy teeth the scope today for completely natural looking cosmetics is diverse. A treatment plan needs to be tailored for each individual, as they are so many variables which can restore a person’s smile. I always have an informal irst consultation with a new patient so there's no pressure and the patient realises that they are in control, and not me!’ ‘Our philosophy at the practice is to involve you (the patient) in the process of treatment planning, after all it is going to affect you and your family and your thoughts and suggestions are always welcome and appreciated. All our staff are good listeners; one cannot aim to be perfect without listening to you. I call this communication process co-discovery.’ ‘At the end of the initial consultation we fully explain the options available to you and the costs involved. It is then up to the patient to decide if and when they would like to go ahead. The end result is that patients feel empowered to make decisions about their treatment plans. and can make their own choices.’ An initial ‘smile consultation’ booked before the end of September is free of charge. Art Class Starts Soon Great news for West Sussex Residents interested in developing their Inner Artist!

There is a 14 week part-time Art Class (once a week for 3 hours on a Monday) in Horsham Town Centre next month. The course has been implemented by popular demand and is being orchestrated by Stringers Art of Petworth.

ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS TO EXPERIENCED AMATEURS

The course is designed to be fun for absolute beginners who have never picked up a brush before through to Improvers says Art Director Leslie Martin

STEP BY STEP GUIDANCE

We adapt to each student’s needs and give them all the guidance and help they need to develop their artistic skills. The curriculum is fun, comprehensive and interesting. Over 14 weeks we will explore 4 different media; pencil drawing & sketching with shading and highlighting techniques,

pastels drawing and techniques, painting and blending with watercolours and acrylics. Step by step tuition in the basic techniques and secrets needed to create beautiful pieces of art.

MISTY MOUNTAINS

By the end of the course, students have created a minimum of 8 pieces of their very own original art they can enjoy forever, from Misty Mountain tops to stunning Seaside Vistas. We will also be aiming to incorporate an optional field trip to the medieval town of Petworth where students can visit Stringers Gallery and paint in one of the beautiful hidden gardens within the village.

EXHIBITION

The final day of the art class will be the preparation for an exhibition held in Horsham Town Centre later that day, featuring the work created over the 3½ month part-time course.

YOUNG AT HEART

This course is a brilliant way to learn new skills you will be able to enjoy forever. It is also a great way of meeting new friends and to have a fun experience you will always remem-

ber and cherish! It is open to all adults of all ages. LIMITED PLACES. To maintain a high standard to our classes and the tuition you will recieve, classes are kept

back into the labour market. Employment Minister Chris Grayling said: “There is still a huge amount of work to do to revitalise the economy and create an environment where businesses are growing and employing people again. “What concerns me in today’s figures is that while there are more jobs in the economy there is too little evidence of them being taken up by the five million people who were stranded on out-ofwork benefits under the previous Government. “While there are fewer people on Jobseeker’s Allowance this month, the numbers claiming other benefits remains stubbornly high, and many of these people have been dependent on benefits

March-May was 160,000 higher than in the previous three months, after falling by 90,000 the previous quarter. Employment is 5,000 lower than in the same quarter last year. The number of people on Jobseeker’s Allowance fell this month but there are around 5million people claiming one of the main out-of-work benefits. And for those of you that have endured a pay freeze, it might be some small comfort that pay growth was on average only 1.8% last year. Here in the Horsham District, there are now 130,700 people, of which 76,900 are of working age population. Of those, some 83.9% are economically active, 5% higher than the national average (the figure is 91.1% for males,

for years. “That’s why we are pressing ahead with the Work Programme to give these people the support they need when they need it.” Ministers have already started to tackle the problem of long term benefit dependency and worklessness by announcing that from October this year some people in Burnley and Aberdeen who claim incapacity benefit will be reassessed to see if they can work. The rest of the country will follow in 2011, although hopefully there are not too many people in Horsham committing anything worse than faking a hobble after parking in a disabled bay. The employment level in

about 8% above average). of those not in work, about 16% overall, most are not wanting a job, leaving the unemployment rate at about 4%. Only 1,460 (or 1.9%) people in Horsham seek Jobseeker’s Allowance, which is half the national average. The only area where we should look to improve on here in Horsham is opportunities for young people. Figures suggest that it is as difficult for people aged 18-24 to find work here as it is in any other area. So while the town, if not thriving, is at the very least holding it’s own during this prolonged period of uncertainty, we shouldn’t forget the next generation...

Top talent agent talks to students on TV life

Homing Show

The Cats Protection Homing Show and Summer Sale Date & Time is held on Sunday 15th August at 11am- 3pm at Broadbridge Heath Village Centre, Wickhurst Lane. The Homing show is an opportunity for the public to come and meet the cats that are currently in care and looking for homes. There will be fundraising stalls with many gift ideas, greeting cards, soft toys, cat carriers, hand made scratching posts and other pet accessories available. Entry is free, although the cats would appreciate a tin or two of cat food!

There’s a Bugs and Beasties Holiday Club event held by Sussex Wildlife Trust at Woods Mill, Henfield, on 3rd August at 10.30am, for 6-10 years olds.

Dianne Persad, top agent with a leading London talent agency for television, visited Collyer’s this week to talk about careers in show business with A2 students from the fields of Drama, Performing Arts and Media. Dianne, who has presented on MTV and GMTV, works with Celebrity Talent Academy Ltd. The academy, based in London and the United States, work closely with Disney and Nickelodeon. The process of casting and pathways available into the industry were explained and Dianne answered questions from the students about the highs and the lows of working in the media and how to get that first foot in the door. Dianne said: “Collyer’s has a great reputation for the creative arts and it was fantastic to meet so many young, keen, talented students. I hope I gave them a taste of what life as a professional performer could be like. In speaking to the students it is obvious that there

Ellis Robinson, Nick Henman, Dianne Persad, Hollie Squires, Naomi Pink, Keith Burton, Rhianon Bishop (Picture taken by Victoria Thompson, A-level Photography student) is a depth of talent here.” Dianne also advised the aspiring young performers about the best type of university courses to research,

the benefits of unpaid work experience and the often brutally long hours that are required. Neil Kendall, Head of

Drama and Theatre Studies/Performing Arts at Collyer’s, was delighted with the session: “It was great that Dianne could take time

out from her busy schedule to talk to the students about careers in the industry. They loved it. The place has been buzzing ever since.” Vicky Thompson, a photography student at Collyer’s, really enjoyed the session: “I’m keen to get into the media industry so it was great to meet someone who is out there doing it, 24/7. It sounds like hard work but this has encouraged me, rather than putting me off.” Dianne was also keen to talent-spot future performers: “I’ve told the students that without doubt ‘Collyer’s got talent’, so I hope to come back to do some workshops in the future.” Keith Burton, who teaches Drama and Theatre Studies said: “We have a really talented bunch and I’m sure that some will have been really inspired to pursue a career in the entertainment industry. “After such an inspiring pep-talk, I feel like treading the boards again myself!” www.collyers.ac.uk

But as it transpires, one group has tried it. A team from West Sussex Paranormal Investigations headed up the Ring in June 2005, but their report is still on the website at www.wspi.co.uk Admittedly, this is hardly likely to be the most sceptical of research groups, but armed with a divining crystal and dowsing rods, the 10 intrepid explorers endured a night of spooks. At one point, a “tall bald man” made his presence known to one member of the group, before

two of the group “picked up” on three women at the same time”. Three beautiful young women dressed in white with long brown hair, called MaryAnne and Rosemary, made themselves known too. The dowsing rods gave off the information that the group was also being protected by spirits, but when two of the group became ill they had to head home. Sadly no “Orbs or Mist” were captured on film, but reading the report you can assume that the group were convinced. Best go in the day then really, when it’s just a lovely, scenic spot for a picnic.

There’s something ‘fishy’ going on in Friday Street From July 23, Friday’s in Warnham will mean enjoying a fabulous Fish & Chip supper, courtesy of The Greets Inn, on Friday Street.

The village will have a new fish & chip takeaway service, with everything freshly cooked to order by the inn’s talented chefs. Simply phone ahead and it will be ready for when you arrive... or you can always stay and enjoy your fish & chip supper here at the inn. To celebrate this new service for the village, please come and join us on Friday July 23, when there will be lots to savour, including a special Surf & Turf with lobster. There will also be mini fish and chip tasters for locals in the bar.

Something in the air Boost for Responders About 6,000 visitors turned out for the annual event at Dunsfold Park to meet the crew of the twin-engine MD902 helicopter. Pilots, doctors and paramedics signed autographs for members of the public who were given a guided tour of the aircraft which can reach patients within minutes. There was also a visit from the Sussex Police helicopter, Hotel 900, and pleasure flights courtesy of London Helicopter Centre. Sussex Air Ambulance County Fundraiser Bridget Pepper said: “This year we exceeded all expectations so a huge thanks must go to all those who came and supported us and our sponsors and volunteers. “From beginning to end there was so much to do and we will strive to make it even bigger and better next year when it Becky, Ben and Matty Coates will be held on from Horsham June 12.”

it’s not every day you get a tour of The Stig’s Top Gear test track in an open top Southdown bus! That was just one of the highlights (unless you were one of the people that lost their hat on the windy bus ride) of a superbSussex Air Ambulance Open Day on Sunday, which raised more than £10,000 for the lifesaving charity.

Horsham and Southwater Community First Responders (CFR’s) would like to thank Warnham C.E.P School for inviting them to their summer fair. The group raised an amazing £160 on our tombola. The group would also like to thank A&R Baileys family butchers of Warnham, Warnham Village Store and friends and family for their generous donations. They will next be at The Dog and Duck Charity Day on 14th August at 12noon.

Attractions included crash scene displays, rescue enactments, tours of a Boeing 747, Rolls Royce rides, a Pimm’s tent and music from the Pantastic steel band. There was also a special visit from the Daleks, a hog roast and barbecue while the children enjoyed a funfair, face painting and a small animal petting farm. One woman from Southwater won a helicopter ride for two in the grand raffle, allowing her to fly over her mother’s home in nearby Alfold. She was joined by former West Sussex County Fundraiser

Delaine Shearman who was given a flight as a leaving present from colleagues after more than three years’ service. Cash from the third Dunsfold Open Day will go towards the £1.7m-a-year cost of keeping the helicopter airborne. Each flying mission alone costs between £1,500 and £2,000.

If you would like to make a donation to the Air Ambulance please call 01622 833833. Alternatively cheques can be made payable to Sussex Air Ambulance and posted to Wheelbarrow Park Estate, Pattenden Lane, Marden, Kent, TN12 9QJ.

CFR's are volunteers who provide immediate care to those in their community who have fallen ill. The CFR's are dispatched by the South East Coast Ambulance Service (SECAmb). CFR's are trained to attend emergency calls received by the Ambulance Service, and give life-saving care in the minutes up to when the ambulance arrives. If you could help with fundraising for your local scheme please contact Marc Harrold on 07941 384265.

in bloom digs for gold it’s been testing times for the in bloom volunteers this year, but hopes are high after a visit by the judges on Monday. No doubt the volunteers have found it hard to convince some businesses to get involved, and the lack of rainfall has ensured it’s been difficult to maintain much colour in gardens this summer. But there are many positives too - a significant award from the Big Lottery Community Spaces, and a generous contribution from Novartis, has meant that major work is underway to create a new garden in Horsham Park. And there’s high hopes that Horsham can again pick up a top award in the South East in Bloom regional competition, sponsored by Southern Water. Horsham in Bloom hosted our entry into the competition and welcomed the two judges, Martyn Hird and Barry Newman, at an opening presentation held at Lavinia House (Age Concern) in Denne Road.

Representatives of Lavinia House and Horsham District Council spoke of the importance of working together to achieve what communities need, and how sustainable outcomes are important not only to horticultural projects,

but to communities as a whole. Anne Bellringer, Chair of Horsham in Bloom, explained that our entry this year was confined to the town centre because Horsham in Bloom is determined to do everything possible to support the busi-

ness economy of Horsham. Anne said: “It is vitally important to keep the town centre vibrant and alive, especially in recessionary times when trading is that much more difficult. “This year the judges were taken on a walking tour to

The work in progress in East Street was of great interest, demonstrating a forward looking economy. “We must wait for September for the results of the competition – but we have done our best, and hope the judges will recognise that in the award they give us. “ Two new projects involve Horsham in Bloom in partnership with the District Council

Grade ii listed 6-bed rural home for sale

property

Tower in the Forest The Water Tower is a truly distinctive property set within the vicinity of St Leonard's Forest near Colgate, just over three miles from Horsham. Originally the water tower to Forest Grange Manor, the property is now a unique 3 / 4 bedroom home, for sale through Henry Adams (Horsham) at £675,000.

“There are beautiful character features throughout the Water Tower, including oak floors, a cantilevered staircase and port-hole windows,” said Howard Ball, partner at Henry Adams, “but one of the really special features is the roof terrace which offers panoramic views of St Leonard’s Forest and beyond to the South Downs.”

Internally the accommodation, which is set over four storeys, also offers plenty to interest and delight. The ground floor living room is over 17ft square, with an open fire, high ceilings and tall windows. An extensive kitchen provides an invaluable space for entertaining having been extended by the current owners to include a sunny breakfast/dining area.

Upstairs the accommodation is equally light and bright, with spacious landings, 3 bedrooms and family bathroom, plus an ensuite shower room. A spiral staircase leads up to the top floor accommodation measuring 18ft10 by 18ft which could be used as an office, fourth bedroom or morning room, and from which doors open onto the spectacu-

lar roof terrace with ample room for alfresco dining, entertaining or simply relaxing. The Water Tower also has its own private patio and a 1.5 acre paddock, whilst enjoying the benefits of communal gardens, woodland and two tennis courts which are owned and shared by the residents of the ten courtyard properties at Forest Grange.

Additionally the property also includes two parking spaces and a garage. For further information and to view this unique home, contact Henry Adams on 01403 253271 or www.henryadams.co.uk

role created at courtney green

Courtney Green is delighted to announce the appointment of Chris Spoard to the role of Property Manager at their Horsham office. chris will be responsible for the maintenance, inspections and repairs for all the properties managed by courtney green. the role has been created as a result of the continued growth of their property management service over the last 20 years which has resulted in one of the largest letting companies in the horsham area. “most people don’t realise the sheer scale of the property management portfolio at courtney green,” says chris. “my new role will make things more straightforward for our clients and will also simplify co-ordination within the office.” chris, who has lived and worked in horsham since returning from australia where he grew up, adds: “i have only ever heard good things about courtney green so this is a great opportunity to join the team.” nick courtney is delighted to welcome him on board: “chris brings considerable experience in property management and has been fully involved since day one, providing the key point of contact for all our clients and tenants which will enhance our service. “chris is also a local man who already knows the area, the market and most importantly, the people, around here.”

Capons costs a cool £1.1m

Sussex farmhouse, near Cowfold, offered for sale Monkhouse & Bannister’s are pleased to offer this beautiful Grade II listed six bedroom farmhouse for sale, at a guide price of £1.1million. Capons Farm stands adjoining the A272 on the western fringes of Cowfold. A 68’ traditional Sussex Barn screens the property beautifully from the road and there is a wonderful outlook over its own land and to the Sussex countryside beyond. Access to the A24 is about a mile to the west. Capons Farm is an exceptional example of an old traditional Sussex Farmhouse which probably dates from the 14th century and has a magnificent frame which is exposed in many parts. Headroom is generally very generous for a property of this age and there are many interesting features including some traditional oak mullions in the windows, jettying on the front elevation and a door on the west elevation where the farm workers would gain access to their first floor accommodation via an external ladder. The building has been added to on various occasions and the east

elevation is in complete contrast with beautiful mellow brick and gables. The rear elevation has some tile hanging and the roof covering is mainly Horsham stone with clay tiles on the southern slopes. The accommodation, totalling approximately 2227 sq ft/272 sq m and providing some excellent space, is now ready for modernisation and comprises a massive oak studded front door set behind an oak arch and opening to an im-

pressive reception hall with stone flag floor, cloakroom with anteroom, sitting room with exposed ceiling timbers and former inglenook with large stone hearth, study with wide inglenook, dining room with views over adjoining countryside to the South Downs, drawing room with stone fire place, kitchen with 4-oven oil fired Aga, large walk in larder. On the first floor there is a fine galleried landing, six bedrooms and two bathrooms.

Outside, the gravelled courtyard which lies to the west of the house is bordered by an extensive range of buildings which includes: traditional Sussex Barn, about 67’8” by 18’0” narrowing to 15’0”, probably dating for the 14th century, double garage of timber frame construction clad with weatherboarding, former cow shed 55’02 by 13’5”, brick and tiled granary on 2 floors. There is a further traditional timber framed building about 39’0” by 14’5” divided into 4 pens and a feed passage. The land lies to the south and west of the house arranged in grassed paddocks extending to about 5.4 acres in all. The gardens provide an attractive setting for the house and include a part-walled garden with 2 yew trees, rose border and lawns, stone paved area with a well and hand pump, further areas of lawn and a selection of specimen trees, former vegetable garden, domestic green house. Monkhouse & Bannisters have been appointed as sole agents. Please telephone: 01798 872081 or email sales@monkhouse.co.uk for full details

The number of people living in million-pound properties has increased by five times in the past decade, research from Santander has shown. According to the report, there are over 100,000 people who have moved into a million-pound home since 2000, with 78 per cent of all properties valued over that mark situated in London. This is despite a drop in 2008-09 - when the credit crunch led to 43,000 houses losing their status as a property worth £1 million or more - with the past 12 months seeing 29,000 regain their place in the category.

Veyron smashes record The new Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport achieved a quite blistering land speed record recently, presumably at a satsuma plantation somewhere. On a beautiful sunny day at 25 degrees the Veyron achieved a new landspeed world record for production cars, on the proving grounds of the Volkswagen Group at EhraLessien near Wolfsburg. In the presence of the German Technical Inspection Agency (TÜV) and a representative of Guinness Book of Records the Super Sport achieved an average top speed of 431 km/h. Bugatti’s ‘Pilote Officiel’ Pierre Henri Raphanel

achieved 427 km/h and 434km/h making an average top speed of 431, 072 km/h (268 mph). This hit even Bugatti’s engineering team by surprise. “We took it that we would reach an average value of 425 km/h,” explains Bugatti’s chief engineer Dr. Wolfgang Schreiber, “but the conditions today were perfect and allowed even more. The Super Sport is a consequent further development of the classic exclusive 1,001-hp Bugatti Veyron 16.4, launched in 2005. This model offers a stunning set of specifications, such as the twin clutch gearbox with seven speeds, the extraordinarily precise driving per-

formance in bends and excellent stability when braking and accelerating. Continuous work in extreme performance ranges lead to constantly new conclusions, which enabled the engineers at Bugatti to develop the Veyron into a direction in which the driver can reach new dimensions. Bugatti has a tradition of making super-sport versions of successful models, usually with racing chassis and supercharged engines. These cars were considered as true racing machines for diehard Bugatti devotees. The most successful were the type 55 and type 57S; only around forty of each were

Who’s F1’s biggest moaner?

It must be Mark Webber, surely? Team builds him the best car, and not only is it is fast, but it’s so safe that when he drives it into the rear of another car and goes sky-bound, he walks away totally unscathed. He then wins the British GP, but does he thank his team for all their efforts? No, it’s all down to him, poor old “number two” Webber, who did it all by himself despite not having a nose cone that’s a full one-tenth of a second slower than Vettel’s one. What a guy! “Where am I now? And where is Hamilton? He is 2nd? He went into the pits second and came out second? That is unfair!” “I know Fernando, it is unfair. Joyless Jenson

We like Button here at The Resident, and are pleasantly surprised at how well he’s done at McLaren. But, like last year, does he have to talk like his dog has just died every time the car is a bit slower than the Red Bull? The car’s not really “undrivable” is it Jenson? All but three other racing drivers in the world would happily trade places with you, so cheer up lad!

The world’s oldest Major is celebrating its 150th year, having first been staged at Prestwick Golf Club in 1860. Horsham Under 18s will take on Sussex County League Division Three opponents Forest FC as part of their preparations for the forthcoming season. The intriguing contest is the second of five matches lined up for Ivan Raby's squad as they prepare for their fourth season in the Ryman Youth League. It’s at Forest on Thursday, 5th August. See www.hornetsreview.co.uk for more info

As if finding your way around a golf course isn’t hard enough already!

Pictures by Chris Woolgar

Mayhem makes for hazardous golfing So much for golfing etiquette then! There were a few more shouts of ‘fore!’ than normal at Horsham Golf Club last Wednesday evening, as the club hosted its Mid Summer Madness event. What that meant was that players needed to negotiate a new and far more challenging course layout. It meant that from the Tee on the 6th, players had to drive across the entrance road and towards the 7th hole, while many balls were lost on the first as it meant a straight drive over the long rough towards the second. Perhaps the most hazardous was an extended hole, from what

is the T-off spot of the short fourth over the water, to the fifth hole. It meant driving straight over an outbuilding (you’ll see all the loose tiles on the roof when you next visit) and over the car park too! Club secretary Chris Purton said: “It’s just a way of having a bit of fun. It’s been really popular this time and the spaces filled up quickly.” For more details about the club, very much on the move these days with a new 18 hole course being constructed, visit www.horshamgolfandfitness.co.uk

President’s Men emerge victorious Broadbridge Heath Cricket Club held its annual Presidents day at the club on Sunday. Both sides produced strong line ups, and this resulted in an exciting match, which included 3 scores of 50+, David Baker and Craig Skilton for The Heath and Lee Harrison for the President XI, and some very tight economical bowling. Eventually the President's XI emerged victorious.

The day was supported by a very large crowd, who were rewarded along with the players by a magnificent and plentiful tea once again provided by Alan Lord and his family. Due to everyone’s generosity in buying raffle tickets and donations on the day, the club raised £430 towards the roller fund. BBHCC committee would like to thank all involved in making the day a great success."

Anyone for tennis?

Darts divisions taking shape

Tony Harris scored a maximum

The social matches are played on a glorious day at Horsham Tennis Club Every year, thousands of us head to Wimbledon, queue for hours whilst watching Sean Connery and Cliff Richard push in at the front, and hope against all logic that one of our guys is going to win the tournament. Maybe we would all be best off playing, as it’s a great game, not just for fitness but for the social element too. At least until the inevitable “the ball hit the line!” argument. Horsham Tennis Club, which like the cricket club is based at Cricketfield Road, held its tournament day on Sunday 11th June.

It was a fine day for tennis and the hot temperatures saw plenty of jugs of water coming out of the bar. For the club's main games the qualifiers had already been played, leaving just the finals on the day. On the social tennis side, the qualifying matches started from 11am and two finals managed to be played later on the day, but a certain World Cup Final meant the social mixed doubles final would be postponed. It was an enjoyable day for all, with the hot weather enabling the spectators to top up their tans and special thanks goes to Sophie

David Crouch and Ben Fawkes

Carter for being tournament referee on the day. Under 18's boys singles winner Richard Allingham beat Alex Fiveash in the final with a score of 7-6 6-1, and repeated the feat in the Men’s Plate final, winning 7-6 6-7 6-0 . The Men's Doubles Final saw Glyn Jukes (club coach) and Dom Robeson beat Mark Williams and Steve Atkinson 6-4 6-3 In the Mixed Doubles Final, Steve Atkinson and Lorraine Burlinson beat Mark Williams and Gail Burlinson 2-6 6-4 7-6 in a hotly contested match with Steve

and Lorraine taking the win in a nail biting tie-break. Glyn Jukes beat Alex Embling with a score of 6-4 6-4 in the men’s singles, with Ben Fawkes and David Crouch beating James Rafferty and James Smith 1-6, 7-6, 6-0 in The Social men’s Doubles. The Social Ladies doubles was won by Bev Field and Sarah Peay, who beat Marina Payne and Sheila Girling 6-2 6-4.

As the League nears the halfway point, all three divisions are starting to take shape, as all the teams battling for a place in the knock-out stages. Reigning Champions Plough Hounds are in a strong position in the A Division, following their 9-0 win over the Windmill. The Hounds’ Gary Simpson celebrated the birth of his new daughter in style by hitting a 180. The battle for the other qualifying spots in the Division looks to be heading to the wire, as just 4pts cover the next three places. Tony Harris's maximum helped put the Sussex Barn in pole position following their 8-1 triumph over the Kings Arms B, but BBHVC slipped up at home to the Railway A, the Billingshurst side recovering well from last weeks heavy defeat by the Hounds to edge a thriller 5-4. Steyning CC remain unbeaten with five straight wins to dominate the B Division, their latest being a 8-1 mauling of the Bear. The Rising Sun remain their closest threat, after they scraped home 5-4 against the Anchor, two maximums were struck in this match, Andy Burch for the Anchor, while Andy Petch replied for the Sun. N.A.D.S versus Rising Sun B was a late result in. Former Champions Kings Arms are running away from the field at the top of the C Division, after whitewashing bottom side Star 9-0, to lead by a big 13pts from the Shelley Arms. The Shelley got back to winning ways after two defeats, helped by Neil Harper’s 118 checkout. They steamed over the Railway Colts 8-1 to put themselves back in contention for a place in September's knockouts. Pete Wickersham shot his second 180 of the season, to help Roffey Club to a 7-2 win over the Plough, to register their fourth successive win.

The club always welcomes new members and can be contacted on 01403 254628

Jolyon trades F2 for go-karts

The F2 racers go karting for a day You’re a Formula Two racing driver - how do you build up your confidence before the biggest race of the season? Race a bunch of local newspaper journalists in go-karts, of course. The young F2 drivers, including championship leader Jolyon Palmer and main rivals Dean Stoneman and Benjamin Bailly, teamed up with a group of hacks at the Brands Hatch karting circuit last week. The Resident’s editor, Ben Morris, shared a Kart with Southwater driver Jolyon Palmer and Howard Griggs from The Argus. We finished fourth though, so no medal for us... Tickets for the FIA World Touring Car and Formula Two Championships at Brands Hatch on 16/17/18 July are now available from £24 for adults, with free entry for children aged 12 and under. For more information call 0870 950 9000 or visit www.brandshatch.co.uk.

Horsham Trinity (batting) performed well but were beaten by Crawley in the final of the plate competition

Quickfire cricket at Henfield end a run of victories Colts summer fiesta

On a very hot afternoon in a match reduced to 18 ends because of the conditions, Horsham overwhelmed Haywards Heath to win 88-38. In the lead from the very first end, Horsham were never troubled. Top rink of Robin Machell, Ken Holloway, Vic Waters and skip George Cooper (+45) were embarrassed by their winning margin. However, the match was played in a very friendly spirit and enjoyed by all. Away to Redhill in the Border League, Horsham had another good win, taking 8 points out of 10. And last Friday, another scorching day, Horsham won again in a match again reduced to 18 ends against the Banks Bowling Association. President of the Banks BA, Roger Lanham, congratulated Horsham on its win and said that this annual fixture was very popular and usually oversubscribed. Top Horsham rink went to Malcolm Bridgman, Mike Parr, Allan Robertson and skip Simon Felton (+23). Roy Smith (+12) and Paul Jolliffe (+8) ensured the overall 10 shot win. On Saturday though, Horsham suffered a narrow defeat to Henfield, 67-71. The one winning rink of Fran Baillie, Ken Holloway, David Grogan and skip Roy Smith (+19) prevented a heavier defeat.

Despite a host of International sporting events and a dull and damp start to the morning, the sun did shine, and some 250 people were thoroughly entertained to a fiesta of cricket at Christ’s Hospital School on Sunday 11th July 2010. There were 16 teams from 15 Clubs entered in the six-a-side cricket Competition, co-sponsored by the Horsham Lions Club and The Identilam Colts Cricket League. The Competition has been run by

the Lions Club for the passed 22 years. The round robin section of the Competition started under cloudy skies; even so, the standard of cricket was very high. Indeed the majority of games were very close, some going down to the fifth and final over and several being decided on the very last ball. At the end of the three round robin matches the top eight teams went into the Knockout section for The Horsham Lions Challenge Cup,

Roffey were runners up in the main competition

and the remaining teams continued in the Plate Competition, which was sponsored by The Identilam Colts Cricket League. By late afternoon The four semi finalists in the main competition were Ansty, Horley, Roffey and Three Bridges, while Capel, Crawley, Horsham Trinity and Steyning B competed for the Plate Competition. Again all the matches were close and after a long hot day Ansty met Roffey in the final of the main com-

petition and Horsham Trinity and Crawley contested the Plate final. Ansty batted first and made 45 for 0 wickets from their 5 overs against some very tight bowling. Roffey also faced a strong bowling line up and needed 4 runs off the final ball, but lost a wicket going for a very attacking stroke. Roffey`s score was 42 for 3 wickets. Again the Plate Competition was hard fought. Crawley batted first Continued on Page 63...

Marshall shows her true grit!

Southern Motocross Riders were out in force in Horsham on Sunday. On Horsham’s demanding track, there were a number of championship rounds for the Over 40s, Over 50s and Over 60s. While it was tough for the riders, nobody suffered more than the young female marshall who drew the short straw and was located on a turn where the bikes kick up the most dirt! Roffey take on Ansty in the scenic grounds of Christ’s Hospital Continued from Page 62... and scored 52 for 3 and Horsham Trinity replied with 28 for 5. Trinity faced some very tight bowling and as a result lost wickets regularly trying to chase the game. Lion Tom Osborne and Peter Garland of the Cricket League congratulated all the teams, their managers, umpires and scorers for a superb day’s cricket which was both absorbing and entertaining. Tom also expressed his thanks to Christ’s Hospital School for
