Teenager Alanna Baker eclipsed even the efforts of her training partners from Spelbound by winning a European title. The former Collyer’s student from Storrington, who regularly trains alongside the 2010 Britain’s Got Talent (BGT) winners, won a gold medal for sports acrobatics at the European Championships in Varna, Bulgaria. Alanna, who was coached by Ali Harmer and Debbie Livings at Horsham Gymnastics Centre, won the senior women’s pair with 15-year-old Poppy Spalding, from Harrow. The pair are members of Heathrow Gymnastics Club, which also includes the sensations from Spelbound who shot to

fame with their spectacular performances on ITV last year. Alanna, 19, said: “We just wanted to make sure we did the best routine we could. We were hoping for a medal, but we were competing against strong opposition from Russia and Belarus so we weren’t expecting to win it. “We were leading throughout the whole competition and we won by 0.7 of a mark, which is quite a lot.” Of the 37 gymnasts in Great Britain’s senior and junior squad for the competition, 14 are members at Heathrow, including four who are part of Spelbound. Adam Mcassey and Edward Upcott, the latter well known for flying over the BGT judges, won two section golds but finished second overall in the senior men’s pair. Alanna, who trains for 15 hours each week, is guided by Heathrow, Spelbound and GB coach Neil Griffiths. Continued on Page 4

Pudsey and pals in town Pudsey Bear, 20 mascots, children’s TV star Dave Benson Phillips and hundreds of youngsters descended on the Carfax for a Children in Need spectacular. Dave gave four shows on Sunday afternoon and had the children, adults and mascots dancing around to The Birdy Song, Bare Necessities and The Sun Has Got His Hat On. Primary schools had encouraged their children to draw and paint pictures of Pudsey, which were displayed around the Carfax. Local dance group Fi Steps warmed up the audience with a Flash Mob at 12.30pm followed by a song and dance display. A bemused bystander said: “One woman in front of us suddenly started dancing and we wondered what she was doing. More and more people started to join in and we realised it was one of those flash mobs so we started filming it on our phones.” Another member of the crowd said: “It was great to see people of all ages dancing together out in public. “There were mums and dads and very small children all doing the same dance moves. It made you want to join in.” The BBC filmed part of the proceedings, which may feature in the

Woman in car park death plunge tragedy A mother plunged to her death six minutes after buying a bucket to assist in her suicide. An inquest heard that two electricians saw Linda Matthews fall from the top floor of the Swan Walk car park, Horsham, on the evening of June 29. The 58-year-old travel consultant, of Trefoil Close, Horsham, had been treated for depression. She took an overdose in January 2009 and later cut her wrists as a cry for help. Mrs Matthews, who was married with two grown-up children, had aroused the suspicions of a security guard in the same car park three months before she died. But coroner’s officer Lindon Langley told the inquest at Horsham

Magistrates’ Court: “Friends who saw her before she died remarked that she seemed to be in good spirits.” Reading a report based on contributions from other people, Mr Langley said Mrs Matthews had bought a bucket from Wilkinsons six minutes before her death. This enabled her to leap from the edge of the top floor. Mr Langley said: “The deceased left a note extolling her love for her family. She apologised for the hurt that would be caused by her actions.” Coroner Christopher Wilkinson said: “Mrs Matthews had been released from hospital having responded well to treatment. But sadly she seems to have taken a turn for the worse towards the end of June. “It appears that the possibility of

taking her life is something she had considered on a number of occasions.” Mr Wilkinson recorded a verdict of suicide, but he added: “It is clear to me that she had a very supportive and loving family who did everything to help and support her. I also believe that she received good professional support.” Mr Langley said: “We have had two previous deaths from Swan Walk and we are aware that other members of the public who are significantly medically challenged have recently gravitated to this particular car park. “The police and other interested parties have recently come together to see how they can try to protect these vulnerable people.”

The Resident, July 1

The case against a man accused of murdering his wife has been adjourned. William Thomas Allen, 66, is charged with murdering Linda Allen, 64, at their rented home in Nyetimber Lane, West Chiltington, on June 9. He was due to appear at Lewes Crown Court yesterday (Thursday) to enter a plea but was not present on medical advice. The case was adjourned until Monday.

Alanna’s European glory She said: “I was training with Spelbound when they were doing the live (TV) shows and I still train with them now. “We all get on really well and we supported each other through the whole competition in Bulgaria. It’s like a big family. “The stuff they do is natural to us because we see them every day, but it’s mind-blowing to everyone else.”

A waitress at The Owl pub, Kingsfold, Alanna attended Storrington First School, Rydon Community College, Steyning Grammar School and Collyer’s. As The Resident went to press, Alanna and Poppy were competing in Italy in the fourth and final World Cup event, with high hopes of a bronze medal overall. Now their focus shifts to the World Championships, in Orlando, Florida, next April.

Fireworks worth a try Possible sites for

travellers revealed

This was the spectacular scene at Horsham Rugby Club on Saturday as fireworks fans enjoyed their annual treat

Lighting up Girl power The Christmas lights in Piries Place will be switched on at 4.30pm tomorrow (Saturday). Graham Russell, of Aurac Sound & Vision, said: “After the success of the last Big Switch On, all of the stores in Piries Place are looking forward to an even better event this year. “There will be lots going on, including live music and food stalls, and Santa may even make an appearance.” Sands, the stillbirth and neonatal death charity, will provide the Vocademy Choir from 3pm to 4.30pm, with a raffle for the charity drawn at 5pm.

The Financial News has named Sharon Bowles, MEP for Horsham district, as one of the top 100 most influential women working in European finance. The Liberal Democrat MEP, who represents the South East region, said: “I am flattered to have been named on this list as it is acknowledgment of the long hours and hard work. “As chair of the European Parliament’s economic committee, I will continue to contribute to the debate surrounding the Eurozone crisis and help shape financial legislation.”

Thirteen potential sites for gypsies, travellers and travelling showpeople have been identified by Horsham District Council consultants. An independent study by Baker Associates, commissioned by the council, was published this week and presented to councillors on Tuesday. The sites identified are: • Greenfield Farm, Barns Green (four pitches) • Land adjacent to Greenfield Farm, Barns Green (one pitch) • Land at Fewhurst, Coneyhurst (four pitches) • Rowfold Nurseries, Coneyhurst (10 pitches) • Land at Honeybridge Lane, Dial Post (five pitches) • Oaklands, Dial Post (three pitches) • Southview, Five Oaks (four pitches) • Oakdene, Pulborough (one pitch) • Parson’s Field Stables, Pulborough (one pitch) • Smithers Rough, Rudgwick (10 pitches) • Land adjacent to Hillside Park, Small Dole (12 pitches) • Former depot, Warnham (two pitches) • Lane Top, West Chiltington (five pitches) A spokesman for the district council said: “Some of these are new sites and some already have personal or temporary planning permission, while others are unauthorised sites that have been ‘tolerated’.

What do you think?

“There is a recognised need to provide appropriate sites for gypsy, travellers and travelling showpeople across the country, including in the Horsham district. “This work has taken on increased importance with planning applications coming forward across the district and the publication of draft government policy which suggests planning authorities will have to show a five-year supply of traveller sites, in the same way they do for housing. “It is important for people to be aware that the identification of the sites in this study does not mean they are ‘allocated’ or will necessarily be given planning permission. “Horsham District Council will use the study findings to inform work on the preparation of a strategy for the provision of sites for gypsy, travellers and travelling showpeople, as well as a document that allocates individual sites. “The council is committed to engagement with local settled communities and the gypsy, traveller and travelling showpeople community, and will continue to liaise with key interest groups throughout the process. “The study will be used to inform a gypsy, traveller and travelling showpeople site allocation document, which will be prepared next year and will be the subject of several stages of public consultation.”

facebook.com/horsham.uk

We asked the 7,000+ members of the Horsham Facebook page for their reaction and where, if anywhere, should be allocated for gypsies and travellers in Horsham district?

Here are a few of their comments... Sarah Hildreth Think I might get in the burglar alarm business, think they might be in demand soon! Charles Puckle Land adjacent the camping ground in Small Dole seems logical, but other consultees will have a different view. Phil Treadgold They should have nowhere. They pay no taxes but want use of our facilities and land for them. Come on. Is this a joke? I have to pay taxes to enable me and my family to live. Suppose I stop paying my way. What can I get for free. Nothing. These people should have nothing given to them. I’ll bet I’m not alone on this either. Lady Janine Mcilroy-Rice I thought the whole point of being a gypsy or a traveller, was that you travelled? if they paid taxes and took pride in the land they were on and didn’t cause trouble within the local area then people might react differently! Cat Ross These are people we’re talking about. Human people with families. Of course there should be permanent traveller sites in Horsham district. The sites should be subject to council tax and provided with all the services we receive in return for paying ours. As long as travellers and gypsies are seen as a lower class and discrimination seen as socially acceptable, so the divide will continue. Andy Poulton Having lived in Essex and seen what they have done to the countryside - NOWHERE! Bridget Chapman I’m a teacher and work with traveller kids and parents who are lovely people and fine upstanding citizens. I’ve also lived alongside travellers with no issues. What you’re portraying is a stereotype, not the reality. Andy Poulton A bunch of travellers bought a small piece of land in my brother’s lovely little village. The gorgeous little pub is now a no-go area and the crime rate has shot through the roof. The rubbish dumped on the roadside is just totally horrible. Nick Beck I wonder if a certain Francis Maude wouldn’t mind them living at the bottom of his no doubt vast garden?

Why goldilocks are going soon Becky Freeth Junior Reporter

A Barns Green woman will have her long golden hair cut off to support her best friend’s battle against cancer. Paying testament to a 12-year friendship, Emma Dale will say farewell to her locks at the village’s Queens Head pub, as part of an evening of fundraising on Saturday, November 19. When Emma saw Julie Lambley, from Merrow, was losing her hair during intensive chemotherapy, she suggested the haircut to friends. Emma, 43, of Emms Lane, said: “I wanted to do the scariest thing I could think of, something I couldn’t hide from.” Her hair will be donated to the Little Princesses Trust, which makes real hair wigs for children who have

lost their hair from cancer treatment. The friends once shared ownership of a Guildford boutique and Emma was overcome when Julie, 39, was diagnosed with breast and lymph node cancer in August. By sharing the experience of losing their hair, Emma hopes it will encourage people to look at her and not her friend.

I would cut off my ‘right arm if it would help Julie ’

She said: “I think if someone did that for me I would know they really cared about me. I would cut off my right arm if it would help Julie.” What started out as a gesture for a friend soon attracted great interest from Barns Green villagers who

wanted to raise money. Inundated with promises, Emma decided to organise an auction for the items and treats contributed solely by villagers and local businesses. For a small village, Barns Green is well known for raising money – and with donations ranging from a spa weekend to a two-person helicopter ride, this fundraiser is no exception. Emma said: “Julie is just so happy that something good can come out of her having cancer. That’s what’s helping her feel better. It’s given her a purpose.” The money raised will be shared between Macmillan Cancer Support and Cancer Research UK. Queens Head landlord Peter Burdfield believes this could be the biggest single fundraising event in Barns Green. He said: “We really want to extend the invite to people outside the area. We want them to come along, enjoy it

The lifelong Pompey supporter was at Fratton Park watching a 3-1 victory against Doncaster Rovers while his flat in Orchard Road, Horsham, was raided. A silver Danbury Mint commemorative watch, one of a limited edition, was taken along with £350. The burglary happened on Saturday, October 22, but police did not release details about it until almost

two weeks later. Det Con Kai Murray said: “The loser attached great historical and sentimental significance to the watch and it would be good to help him recover it. “We would like to hear from anyone who was in the Orchard Road area that Saturday afternoon and who saw anything suspicious. “We’d also be interested to hear from anyone who has been offered this distinctive watch. You can contact us via 101, quoting serial 1592 of October 22.”

New proposals have been put forward to ensure West Sussex Library Service can save £650,000. Cllr Lionel Barnard, deputy leader of West Sussex County Council, said: “I am delighted to be able to say that none of the county’s 36 libraries will be closed under the new proposals and the revised mobile library service will be left untouched. “Originally we were working with just the smaller libraries to find alternative ways of delivering the service, but now it is clear the savings should be found from across the whole

libraries network. “You only need to look at the difficult decisions that have had to be made about adult social care and the subsidy on buses to realise how serious the financial situation is. “However we now believe that further efficiencies in our waste management contracts will allow the money to be found.” The proposals include: • Reducing by £200,000 the amount spent on new books and other lending items such as DVDs and books on CD.

• Exploring ways of raising money to augment the media fund, which buys stock for libraries. • Appealing again for recently published books in good condition to be donated. • Stopping direct deliveries to residential homes and sheltered housing, but encouraging their staff or volunteers to collect books instead. • Installing self-service machines into libraries at Storrington, Shoreham, Lancing and Burgess Hill, in addition to those already at Horsham and elsewhere. • Saving money by managing job vacancies.

It was challenging and ‘impossible to achieve without affecting staff and services

Cllr Barnard, Conservative county councillor for Henfield, added: “We are looking to reduce paid staff in smaller libraries and to work with communities to find volunteers to offer support. “This is more realistic than expecting libraries to be run wholly by volunteers, which communities told us they didn’t like. “We are still looking at the details of how things will work, but we have avoided any change to the opening hours. “The entire Cabinet agreed that if the financial problems for the whole county were not so grave, they would not have wished to impose any of the options. It was challenging and impossible to achieve without affecting staff and services.” The council’s community services select committee considered the proposals on Wednesday, but the final decision rests with Cllr Barnard. Joined up thinking across the county The government has chosen West Sussex to become part of a programme pioneering ways of pooling resources. Better Together is focusing on collaboration and partnerships between county, district and borough councils in the county, health services, police, voluntary services and the Civil Service Estate. As a result, West Sussex has been selected to become one of the country’s Pathfinder areas, aiming to save money by initiatives such as sharing buildings. At County Hall North in Horsham, the county council is sharing its space with the Health Protection Agency and Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs. Also in Horsham, the county council and Horsham District Council are working together “to develop plans for the regeneration of two extensive areas in mixed public ownership”. A spokesman for the county council said: “In time this collaboration will help create better facilities and more

attractive places, as well as generating significant capital receipts and reduced running costs.” Cllr Louise Goldsmith, leader of West Sussex County Council, said: “It is excellent news to see that the Better Together programme has been recognised as one of the country’s major partnership working projects and a key part of a nationwide move to drive down costs. “This sharing of what we have – and what we can create – is absolutely what the Big Society is all about.

Our partnership ‘members are keen to find ways of reducing costs ’ “Every public sector organisation in West Sussex is facing a tough time financially and all our partnership members are keen to find ways of reducing costs. Becoming a Pathfinder will be a tremendous boost.”

Models required for Macmillan A Horsham store needs volunteers to model clothes at a fashion show in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support. Sarah Fenton, manager at Bonmarche, West Street, said: “We need ladies of all shapes, sizes and ages to take part in this fantastic event.

It’s all about fun, so no experience is needed. This will be our second fashion show in the Horsham branch. We had such a great time that we knew we had to do it again.” The show will take place on November 28 but tickets at £3 are already available in the store.

Three options for future of Mill Pond Neil Henry Warnham Local Nature Reserve

The main item of news has to be the urgent works to the Mill Pond, on behalf of DEFRA, to comply with the safety standards on storage reservoirs. It appears that the overall size of the Mill Pond qualifies it as a ‘reservoir’ within the meaning of current legislation. This has to be seen as part of the flood control scheme for the Arun Valley and its tributaries. The Mill Pond is long overdue for silt removal as both the feeder streams, particularly Boldings Brook, carry a lot of sediment which effectively has been choking the pond. This was most apparent a couple of winters ago, when the pond almost drained out following a problem with the sluice gate being blocked in the open position. At that time, Boldings and Chennells Brooks were confined to a deep canyon between substantial areas of black mud. There have been several proposals presented and it is now down to Horsham District Council, in conjunction with DEFRA and specialist contractors, to settle on a plan which will have considerable implications. The district council has narrowed

Warnham Mill Pond drained, in March 2008

the options to three main alternatives. Essentially, the choices are: • Adding to or widening the sluice gates, allowing more water to be released downstream. • Constructing a higher embankment and new control structures, allowing more water to be retained in the Mill Pond in times of flood. The first two options would require major work and possibly new road bridges or culverts to allow water to pass under Warnham Road and along

the Red River to join the Arun. • Removing most of the reservoir embankment and the sluice gate, allowing the feeder streams to take a deeper channel. This would give the option of creating several smaller ponds, enhanced reedbeds and wetland habitat in a floodplain. A display of the three main choices will be on show at the Visitor Centre until December 4, in order to invite comment from users of the site and the public. Details can also be found at

www.horsham.gov.uk Cllr Jonathan Chowen, council Cabinet member for arts, heritage and leisure, said: “We recognise the value the Warnham Mill Pond provides to local residents and visitors. “It is therefore important that appropriate works are undertaken to ensure that flooding risks are mitigated and that local communities are able to influence the option chosen for the site. “We would like to encourage all

users of the site, or those who live in Horsham, to visit the exhibition and provide their views.” Andrew Gilham, of the Environment Agency, said: “We have a good working relationship with Horsham District Council. We will continue to work in partnership to ensure that the reservoir continues to operate safely and that the communities are protected.” The display of pictures from the Nature Photographer of the Year will be restricted and will be fully reinstated after December 4. The annual Feed the Birds Day took place at the reserve, with displays and contributions from the RSPB (Crawley branch), Astronomia of Dorking and the Friends. I have it on good authority that a good number of ‘bird cakes’ were made, particularly by or for youngsters. Despite light drizzle, it was deemed to be a successful day. The next event is on Sunday (10am to 12.30pm), with a Fungus Foray led by Prof Maurice Moss, costing £3 for adults and £1.50 for accompanied children. This must be booked in advance as numbers are limited. Bookings are already coming in quickly for two sessions (morning and afternoon) of Xmas Wreath Making on Tuesday, December 13. This costs £10 and includes tea or coffee and a mince pie. Phone 01403 259592.

COLOUR ENHANCEMENT Beware of buying precious stones on the internet. A large percentage of stones are colour enhanced so when you have them mounted they could turn transparent. These stones will often be described as natural, true, however you must always ask if they are colour enhanced. I once resized a ring with a Blue Diamond, to my horror the colour disappeared.

their fortunes with those of the Hornets. With many popular players leaving after our fantastic FA Cup run, Horsham are languishing in the relegation zone of the Ryman League Premier Division. The departure of manager Justin Luchford so soon after his arrival epitomises our struggles. I can’t help but feel that this is the very time Horsham needs its supporters most. But where are they? I can tell you, they are watching a far higher standard of football in their armchairs, counting their pennies. Why fork out a tenner to go and see Horsham get tonked 5-0 at Gorings Mead when you can sit in the warmth and comfort of your living room and watch City thrash United 6-1? This is why, even in the knowledge of Horsham’s financial difficulties, lowering ticket prices might just save our club. I’ve even heard from students like myself that they’d rather save up for a night out than spend £5 on the Hornets. The Lardy Army looks more semi-skimmed than full fat. An attendance boost is a must and perhaps lower prices may aid this.

Plenty of opposition has been raised concerning the proposed rise in car parking rates, both from a business and customer point of view, but little has been said about workers in town for whom parking is not provided. Many retail workers are at the lower end of the pay scale, do not have parking provided for them and have to pay for the privilege of coming to work. How will the parking charge rises affect them? My husband is one such worker. Currently he does not have to pay for parking in the evening. He drives as sometimes he may not finish work until 2am and he has to be up at 7am to look after our two toddlers as I work during the day. Due to the hours he works, he does not have the option of using public transport. Having to start paying for parking will cause a greater strain on our already decreased annual income. But what of those who work in our town centre during the

day with a budget that is being stretched further every day? Have our elected councillors taken them into consideration? Not only will the proposed parking charge increases affect the number of visitors to Horsham, which will have a knock-on effect on local businesses, it will also have a negative impact on many of the people who work in town. Surely having lower parking fees than other towns in West Sussex will attract shoppers, which means we will continue to have a very low level of closed shops in our town centre when compared to other towns. I understand and accept that parking fees will have to rise from time to time, but not by the levels that have been proposed. So far I have not seen any local support for the parking rate increases, nor have I seen any persuasive arguments from councillors. I do not see how the rate increase will benefit anyone apart from the local council. Emma Carraro Orchard Road, Horsham

Councillors in pre-historic era We are retired and have lived in Mannings Heath for 35 years. We enjoy Sussex, which offers so many advantages, and we could not imagine living anywhere else. However, we cannot understand the insular attitude and total lack of reality shown by many of our councillors, who appear to live in the pre-historic era of plenty from the time of Sun Alliance and Ciba. Please, please wake up to the reality of today’s challenges. Cheap and preferably free parking is essential to attract visitors and shoppers to this now-not-soprosperous town. We cannot understand comments made by councillors about surrounding awful towns. We choose to use these towns – Brighton, Crawley, Worthing, Littlehampton and Guildford – because the parking is free and in most cases the shopping is better. Often the restaurants are in more interesting locations by the side of marinas, rivers and sea fronts. Not so long ago, we were able to park near Horsham Church, enjoy a coffee and shop in the town with limited time pressure. Now we would have to use a parking meter, requiring us to pre-decide how many minutes we need – not our idea for a leisurely retirement. Gradually parking restrictions MANNINGS HEATH HOTEL

Many car parking charges in Horsham – including most at Swan Walk – are set to rise by 25 per cent and others by as much as 50 per cent. But the district council’s leader has dismissed suggestions that the increases will hit hard-pressed traders by putting off potential visitors to the town. Cllr Robert Nye told The Resident: “All of the surveys very clearly show that the public are not focused on the actual cost of parking, unless it is exceptional in relation to the surrounding towns. “People are looking for good-quality parking, easy to access without driving around trying to find a space. That’s far more important than the increase in prices. “In comparison to other towns, you will find we will be highly competitive even after the parking increases. “When you look at how much we’re putting the charges up, it will cost you more in petrol to go to Crawley. The increases

Councillors have voted to increase car parking charges by an average of 20 per cent, despite fears that the changes will hit hard-pressed businesses. At a full council meeting on Wednesday evening, Horsham District Council supported fee rises designed to cut the council’s net budget while improving the quality of car parks in the town. But Liberal Democrat councillor Frances Haigh, who represents Horsham Park ward, told the meeting: “Our competition comes from the supermarkets where parking is free and from the internet which is available 24/7. “Residents have commented on Facebook that these increased prices mean they will shop at the supermarkets instead.

“Nationally we are in the midst of the worst recession for 30 years. Some of our town traders are hanging on by a thread. They need us to be providing policies that support them. “Arun District Council has introduced a one-year trial offering free parking for two hours in Bognor Regis. Why can we not do that here on one day midweek to encourage people into the town?

He told them: “I really don’t think it is half the problem you’re making it out to be. I don’t think putting up parking charges a little bit will make a blind bit of difference. “You can’t compare Bognor Regis to Horsham. It’s like comparing a clapped out old banger to a Rolls Royce. Bognor Regis is a dump. “What is proposed is perfectly reasonable and the majority of people will support it.” The council will allocate £130,000 of the expected extra income to fund new parking machines, car park cleaning, lighting improvements and a parking customer survey.

have been moved further and further out, leaving many of the places we used to park completely empty. Free parking is now so far out of town that we normally choose to go elsewhere or use Sainsbury’s parking. What have the council achieved? A park and ride south of the town when 90 per cent of the residents live to the north. Half-empty car parks already too expensive. Expensive redevelopment of East Street for restaurants without localised parking and where increased charges are likely to make these businesses even less viable. You can park for free at Brighton Marina, with a larger choice of restaurants and a more interesting location. We have always liked Horsham. The council have made some good improvements – sports centre and theatre – but their parking policy has been a complete disaster. We would like to spend more time and money locally, but at present we are more attracted by those other towns. Councillors should talk to their residents rather than having preconceived ideas, understand the relationship of parking cost to visitor numbers, close or relocate the costly park and ride, and recognise the ‘awful towns’ as real and effective competitors for Horsham.

Window display marks special Armistice Day James Hood Business Editor

james@the-resident.co.uk

Ballard & Shortall Funeral Directors in Horsham is supporting this year’s Poppy Appeal, by creating a special window display. This year, Armistice Day falls on the 11th day of the 11th month of the year 2011, thus being 11.11.11 and is being celebrated as a once in a lifetime Remembrance Day. This year also marks the 90th anniversary of the Royal British Legion, making it especially unique. Funeral director Angela Spencer said: “I have always supported the Poppy Appeal and this unique year in particular, we are passionate about

not only emphasising the valuable work of The British Legion but remembering those who gave and continue to give so much for peace and freedom. We believe it is important for the community to ensure that younger generations can learn about and value the immense sacrifices that have been and are made on our behalf. In this way we can make sure Remembrance Day continues to be honoured

and respected for years to come.” Poppies are available from the funeral home on Wellington Road as well as a collection tin. The Royal British Legion works to provide practical care, advice and support to Armed Forces personnel, ex-service men and women of all ages and their families.

A woman who owns a baby gifts company is raising money for charity with the help of an eighttier cake made entirely from nappies. Nikki O’Connor set up Hello Baby Gifts earlier this year and creates products such as nappy cakes, nappy rings, gift baskets and other gifts for newborns, baby showers and christenings. The cake has been created from nappies that were donated by Kimberley Clark, the company that owns Huggies. Between the Lines, in Horsham’s town centre, has also donated a cuddly bunny, which sits on top. Nikki will be showcasing the cake at the Baby Expo in Brighton this weekend (Sunday, November 13) where visitors can pay just £1.50 to guess how many nappies were used to make it. Everyone who enters will be entered into the competition and the person selected with the right answer Offices in Brighton, Chichester, Horsham, Storrington and Worthing

will win the cake. The nappy tower will be presented at the main reception of the exhibition and all the money raised will go to the Chestnut Tree House charity, a ‘home away from home for sick children and their families.’

Putting your feet first It has always been important to look after your feet, but why? There are many people who experience pain or problems in their feet, these include: elderly people, children, people with diabetes, pregnant ladies and those who play sport. 3 out of 4 people aged 70 and over have to see a podiatrist in order to keep their feet comfortable; this is unsurprising, as in a lifetime an average person will walk about 76,000 miles (2.5 times around the world!) It is therefore important to have access to foot care and advice from a younger age. A podiatrist is a healthcare professional who specialises in the treatment of lower limb and foot conditions and disorders. Conditions which affect the lower limbs can be inherited, be due to illness or other systemic problems, or acquired through injury over a period of time. A podiatrist can assess, treat and diagnose lower limb disorders and is able to work in a number of different fields such as: diabetes, rheumatology, paediatrics, sports injuries, biomechanics and routine care. Common problems treated by a podiatrist can range from bunions to blisters, knee pain to nail problems, arch pain to arthritis and everything in between! We understand the importance of safe self-care and footwear, as well as professional advice and treatment. At Clockhouse Podiatry, our

podiatrists work closely with other members of the multidisciplinary team; including physiotherapists, GPs, acupuncturists, sports therapists and complementary therapists. This ensures a holistic, effective and high level of care for all of our patients. Clockhouse Podiatry has close connections within the local community. We support local groups such as Horsham Joggers and offer treatment and advice to the runners of Barns Green Half marathon each year. We liaise closely with local sports shops such as Up and Running, who offer professional advice to ensure our patients have the best trainers or walking footwear suited to their particular foot types. As the winter months are drawing in, Clockhouse Podiatry would like to share some tips for warm and healthy feet! • Wear closed in shoes preferably with socks to keep feet warm. • Change socks daily to avoid skin infections • Warm your feet gradually, avoid extremes of temperature. E.g. do not place cold feet in a hot bath. • Use a foot cream to keep feet supple and avoid cracks in the skin (warming creams are useful for this time of year). If you feel unsure or concerned about a foot health issue, or would like further information please feel free to contact us on 01403 259248.

Dan’s dos and don’ts for your website These days, having a presence online for your business is crucial. Here, exclusively for Business, Dan Purchase explains some of the things you should and should not do on your website display contact details throughout. Do – Get help from a professional company if your budget allows. A website that has been ‘knocked up’ by someone that has taught themselves a bit of Dreamweaver will not give the impression of a professional organisation. Do - Keep your site fresh. Make sure you have the option and knowledge to edit the website yourself. A Content Management System such as Wordpress, Drupal or others allow you to keep your content up to date,

which encourages users to revisit and is also popular with search engines. Do - Make use of social media. If you have a blog or a news section, allow users to share items on platforms like Facebook or Twitter as this will promote interest in your site and build natural links. Link to your Facebook or other accounts but only if you have a core following. And make sure you use them! Don’t - Publish your personal email address. You’ll just get a lot of spam mail. Use a specific business

If you’re starting a new business or re-branding an existing one, you’ll know that a website is a vital tool. Whether it be a virtual brochure of your products or services, an online shop, or a fully interactive ‘hub’ there are some important elements to consider and some general, dos and dont’s to bear in mind. Do - Make sure your site is clean and easy to navigate. No one wants to read reams of information and hunt round for the main sections. Make your calls to action obvious and

address.

Don’t - Use Flash (or keep it to a minimum). Search engines find it hard to access content with Flash and areas using it will not display at all on many mobile devices. Don’t - Use too many fonts. Keep it simple and make as much text as possible ‘selectable’ and not images so it’s accessible by the search engines. Also, don’t underline text that is not a link. Don’t - use Splash entry pages. These are landing or welcome pages before getting to your main website. They often say click here to enter. No one wants an extra click through to a page just to get to your website and also you run the risk of confusing the search engines.

Festive fun as a local theatre company brings back 70s rag and bone men James Hood Entertainment Editor

Steptoe and Son returns to The Capitol this December for a Christmas special, following the massive success of the show earlier this year. The production will be based on the classic TV comedy’s Christmas specials from 1973 and 1974 and stars Jack Lane and Michael Simmonds. Jack, who also produced the show, said: “We’ve gone all out to try and make the show as close to the classic programme as possible. “Fans of the original will recognise

the set and many of the props such as the skeleton and stuffed bear. It will be like being transported back to the BBC TV series from the 70s.” It’s not only the set that will impress either. The script was written by well know comedy duo Galton and Simpson, who worked on the original and praised Lane and Simmonds for

their first production of Steptoe last March. Jack added: “Galton and Simpson are recognised as masters of British comedy. So working with the script has been an absolute joy.” The two rag and bone men are played by real-life father and son Jack and Michael. Speaking about the on-stage relationship Jack said: “Performing opposite your real life father or son is always going to be slightly unusual but if anything we’ve found it

helpful. “For us the comic timing comes naturally, which is the heart of any comedy.” Harold and Albert will be on stage from Wednesday, December 7 until Saturday, December 17 (excludes the 12th and 13th). Tickets: £12.50 or £10 for groups of 10 or more. For more information, times and to book visit www.thecapitolhorsham. com or call 01403 750220.

The latest phase of the Battle of the Bands saw crowds migrate to The

Holbrook Club, for the covers heat of the competition. Describing themselves as a ‘smooth jazz’ outfit, Little White Blue slowly eased the show in. There was a sense of cohesion between the band members, even though frontwoman

Lisa Magee’s croons seemed almost robotic at times, suggesting that she may be out of her comfort zone. Otherwise, the band’s jittery jives were warm, joyful, and well received. Next up were the snappily dressed Twisted Ego, who came out swinging with their cheesy pop covers, including a medley of artists such as Black Eyed Peas and Pink to open the set. Lead singer Chris Manvell looked like he was having the time of his life as he fronted this tight and charismatic unit, despite finishing the set on a slightly patchy rendition of Guns ‘N’ Roses’ classic track ‘Sweet Child Of Mind’. The arrival of With Lime is a breath of fresh air for both the audience and the judges. Paying tribute to

legendary ska-punks Sublime, technical difficulties did not stand in this four-piece’s way, as they tore through their animated and quirky set. To round off the proceedings were The Evolutionaries; celebrating their debut gig tonight, this trio of young ambitious upstarts showed bravery and perseverance in their performance, which saw them superbly cover a couple of numbers by The Ramones. Third place went to show-opening jazz troupe Little White Blue, the runners-up were Twisted Ego, and the crowned champions were With Lime. “We feel sublime!” cleverly joked the winning band, “Our plans now are just to keep gigging, and keep the spirit of ska alive!” The final stage of the battle, the acoustic/songwriters heat of the competition takes place this Sunday, November 13. Horsham Battle Of The Bands 2011 is supported by Funktion One Research and Weltons Brewery.

Arthur Clause is dusting off the sleigh to save the day Father Christmas and his 1.3 million elves have moved into the 21st century with a high-tech operation to deliver every child with their toys in a super-efficient manner, all in one night. But with the new technology comes the occasional glitch and one little girl has been forgotten! Together Grandpa and an unlikely hero, Arthur Clause, round up the traditional trusty reindeers to save the day and deliver the girl’s presents before her faith in Santa and Christmas is shattered forever. The good old days in Storrington Christmas-tide approaches with its frenetic activities and bustling roads and many look back to a time (about a hundred years ago?) when life was quieter, calmer and simpler – but was it? One of the Storrington activities in the early 1900’s was the local hunts, with the Rector’s favourite horses and hounds, Foot hounds ( e.g. Storrington Foot Beagles of 1909 and Mr. Stocker’s Storrington bloodhounds of 1905 ), and visits from the Warnham Staghounds Hunt. One visit from the Warnham Hunt is recorded in late 1904 where it went up the High Street then followed the stag past Mulberry House and on through the Mill pond ( where some of the hounds nearly drowned ) This was obviously not the only time such High Street jinks took place as the photo, taken about a quarter of a century later, shows. The numerous cars parked along the road and the approaching charabanc bus add to the congestion, making today’s arrangement positively organised. However if we proceed round the corner we have a scene more in keeping with common thought of olde world calmness.

The old photo of Church Street with winter snow, and the view of St. Mary’s (with its St. George’s flag ) taken from the vicinity of Storrington museum both lower the blood-pressure and also lead us to the oasis of Olde World Storrington. On Saturday, November 26, the museum holds its Christmas Fair with, hopefully, reminiscences of calmer days.

Storrington through the ages Storrington is a village whose past is hidden by the shadow of the South Downs and its other, more noted, neighbours; yet it has great charm and depth as you wander along the high street and investigate the side streets that act like arteries, pulling the community towards its heart. Prehistoric man may have lived up on the chalk downs, leaving behind extensive scatters of flints from 6,000 years ago, but it was the Saxons who gave the village its name and identity. Imagine if you will―an easy thing to do as you drive in to Storrington―that you are a Saxon farmer/settler moving into this area. No one lives there; it is a landscape of trees and woodland pasture with a stream running through its midst. It is a place with no name. Then high up, the sight of storks nestling in the upper reaches of the branches looking down on the Germanic settlers. These settlers decided not to call this place after the stream or after the owner of the land; not even after its geographical setting; but after the natural wonder of storks nestling and breading: hence the stork is the symbol of Storrington. This new place, lying a day’s walk from the religious royal township of Saxon Steyning with its place of pilgrimage, took full advantage of the local geology. The nearby sandstone beds

outcropped at the surface providing warm quick drying soils. Later in the twentieth century they provided building sand at Sullington, whose activity competed with the natural wonder of the sand forming heathland, now in part-owned by the National Trust. As the Saxon era moved on into Norman times Storrington developed, but unlike some of the other Sussex villages it did not have a grant for a market till 1400 when one was held on Wednesday along with a couple of fairs. This may reflect a dynamic and ‘go getting’ attitude, typical of some of the village’s twentieth-century traders, making the most of opportunities as Steyning and Bramber were having difficulties. Undoubtedly they would have sold rabbits, a luxury dish and popular fur, at the market and fairs as the poor quality heathland was exploited to make giant rabbit farms, or warrens, a name that lies scattered across the region.

With its southward development hindered by the South Downs, Storrington grew east and westwards as well as expanding northwards, becoming what geographers love―a polyfocal settlement as the village expanded across the landscape, making the most of the opportunities. But the A283, that road mirroring its Roman ancestor, still forms the vein drawing in for these multiple centres and it is along its sides that many shops lie. Unfortunately for Storrington it couldn’t take advantage of the railway; it relied on turnpike roads and local track ways. This undoubtedly led to the idea of a community cut off from hustle and bustle of the twentieth century and that caught the imagination, as it does of the visitor today, as they wander the secluded streets looking at the amazing survival of cottages, just meters from the modern highway, of early twentiethcentury artists. It was in the year before the Great Crash in 1929 that on the outskirts of Storrington, in an area known as Heath Common, that a remarkable lady named Vera Pragnell bought a tract of land creating ‘The Sanctuary’ and gave it away to intellectuals and artists. While East Sussex has the Bloomsbury group based at Charleston Storrington has The Sanctuary, but its story, like much of Storrington’s history, lies All text ©Horsham Museum

forgotten. Today’s Museum Society are valiantly trying to rescue it. For Storrington has a rich past, the home of great British musicians Arnold Bax and nearby John Ireland, of flower fairy artist Mary Barker, and of the first president of Kenya, Kenyatta, during the war years. Storrington is well worth investigating during these winter months, you will be surprised by what you find.

Tenants in Horsham can rest easy knowing their money is ‘SAFE’ and sound, as Horsham based letting agent IN House Residential Lettings becomes the latest firm to join the SAFEagent campaign, aimed at raising awareness of the logo to look for to denote where tenants’ and landlords’ money is protected by a Client Money Protection Scheme. With over 1,200 lettings and managements agents now registered to use the logo, consumers should always look for the easily identifiable mark. The launch of SAFEagent follows a number of high profile media cases where unscrupulous lettings agents have absconded with tenant and landlord funds. The logo has been launched FOR lettings agents BY letting agents with the aim of identifying agents in Client Money Protection Schemes and highlighting the risks of using “uninsured” agents. Matthew Stone, Director at IN House Residential Lettings says: “We want every tenant and landlord that we welcome through our doors to have peace of mind when it comes to client money protection. And, this is exactly what we can reinforce now that we bear the SAFEagent logo. “The message to the consumer is simple - everyone looking to rent or let should ensure that they use a firm

which is part of a client money protection scheme - look for the SAFEagent logo. “Landlords and tenants often make decisions based on cost but it is important to ensure you ask your agent for details of the organisation they are regulated by and which client money protection scheme they are covered by. “All agents regulated by NALS, the Law Society, ARLA/ NAEA, and RICS maintain and operate designated client accounts where clients’ money is held completely separate from the operating funds of the firm. If the agent you are using cannot provide you with the assurance of knowing they are covered by a client money protection scheme the question you need to ask is why not?” For more information on the SAFEagent campaign, please visit www. safeagents.co.uk.

Ask the Experts The Letting Agent

Kathy Taylor Senior Manager Leaders

Q A

There are many situations that can occur that could be attributed to an “Act of Nature”. Can you give me some examples and advise whether it is a Tenant or Landlord responsibility?

Cold weather Leaders Tenants receive an information letter every year on how to ensure they comply with their responsibilities under the terms of the Tenancy and avoid the possibility of damage to their rented property in the Winter season. They are asked to ensure they keep background heating on at a level to avoid extremes of temperature and ensure, if ever they leave the property vacant, that the heating is left on low and constant. This should help prevent burst pipes and flooded properties that can occur in the event that pipes freeze.

Wasps nests and rodents Generally there is no obligation on the Landlord to ensure that the Property does not become infested with pests unless it can be proven the infestation is as a direct result of the Landlord’s failure to repair or if it can be proved that the infestation arose from any common area under the control of the Landlord. The only exception to this is a furnished let where the property is found to be infested prior to the occupation of the Tenant. Therefore it is a Tenants responsibility to pay for pest removal unless they can prove that the infestation occurred prior to their occupancy, as with fleas from a previous occupant. Condensation All air contains varying amounts of water vapour. The warmer the air temperature, the greater the amount of water vapour the air can hold. Condensation occurs because the moisture in the air can no longer be held as a vapour and returns to its liquid form. This occurs when warm moist air comes into contact with cooler air, or more importantly, a cooler surface. Water vapours in the air is generated by a range of human-related activities; sleeping, cooking, washing and bathing, washing and drying clothes. Modern houses with virtually total draught exclusion and UPVC windows with no trickle vents exacerbate the problem. Tenants should use the heating for prolonged periods and at a reasonable setting rather than the habit of blasts of heating for a few hours in the morning and then again in the evening. Landlords must also be aware that they may have a responsibility to provide air vents in their property to control ventilation and assist with air flow.

Haunted House! And finally, get a group of Letting Agents together and the stories come flooding out... best excuse for non-payment of rent – the house was haunted! The Tenant refused to pay rent because a ghost shared the accommodation with him and he did not enter into shared accommodation. The only way the agent could get the Tenant to pay the rent was to call in the services of their local friendly exorcist! Intriguing ideas for everyone’s Christmas list Olli Nott Motors Reporter

olli@the-resident.co.uk

It’s that time of year again, and the search is on to find the right Christmas present for all the family. Happily, the new Mini Lifestyle Collection offers a colourful selection of original ideas for young and old. Order your gifts from the Mini Online Shop at www.Mini.com/shop and raise the excitement around the tree to new heights.

Original gift ideas for him Fans of eco-friendly transport will make particularly proud owners of the Mini Folding Bike. High-quality components, a lightweight aluMinium frame and a clever folding mechanism ensure the twowheeled Mini is the perfect companion for life on the move. Its exceptional design is headlined by a fine matt black finish and a neon yellow chain and bell.

On a more urgent note, Mini has come up with the Snow Rocker to bring out your carefree youthful streak on the slopes. The compact sled, which has been classified with a downhill speed of over 100 km/h, takes even mogul fields in its brisk slalom stride. A Union Jack motif and Racing Stripes on the seat surface make it a genuine head-turner. The Black Jack Watch from Mini is sure to get men’s hearts ticking over

that much more quickly. The chunky analogue timepiece with grey/black Union Jack face delivers numerous hits of style and elegance per minute. Its square case is made of solid premium metal, while the multi-link strap features a practical folding clasp. Original gift ideas for her Alternatively, why not combine a Christmas present with a good cause in the shape of the Red Mudder Foulard by Mini & DSQUARED2? The print on this sumptuous scarf is based on the Canadian duo’s design for the Life Ball Mini 2011, creating an accessory that lends an individual touch to any outfit. A classy gift box further enhances the effect. Part of the proceeds from sales of the scarf will go to the organisation AIDS LIFE to support projects

in the fight against the immune deficiency disease. When it comes to a stylish travel companion for business or leisure, the Mini Rooftop Pilot is difficult to beat. The hard-shell trolley case comes in a pure-as-the-driven-snow white with black Racing Stripes. Features include a retractable telescopic handle, sturdy carry handle and easy-glide wheels. Inside, the various compartments include a special sleeve to keep your laptop separate.

rubber wheels on both axles. The “Beat the Street” Be Mini Baby Set with romper suit and bib makes the perfect party wardrobe for kids aged six to 12 months. I’ve already written my Christmas Wish List, I’m sure I can squeeze a few more items on from the Mini Shop! I’ll ask Santa in advance.

Original gift ideas for the kids The Mini Baby Racer will give Mini members of the family, from 18 months to three years old, endless fun as they take their first turns of the wheel. The racy kid’s car features impressive attention to detail, from the front and rear lights in authentic Mini design to the use of the original Mini colour shade Chili Red. Parents, meanwhile, will be relieved to find noise-cancelling

Bag a bargain in Chevrolet’s pre-Christmas sale! Most sales take place after Christmas, but then Chevrolet has never been a brand to do things conventionally. Customers at Stevens, Crawley will be able to save up to £6,000 on certain Chevrolet models if they order before Wednesday, November 30. The biggest savings are on the Captiva 2.2 VCDi LT seven-seat SUV. Priced at £21,695 during the sale period, it offers the luxury of much more expensive SUVs for less than many smaller, five-seat rivals. Luxury touches include electronic climate control, Bluetooth, rain-sensing wipers, automatic headlights, 17inch alloys and rear parking sensors among others – a lot of kit for £6,000 below list price. There are also excellent savings on the race-proven Cruze – the all-new hatchback model is available in 1.6 LS form at £11,495 on the road – a saving of £2,500. Featuring as standard

air conditioning, ESC, electric front windows, a CD stereo, electricallyadjustable mirrors, follow-me-home headlights and remote central locking, the model is impressively equipped. Those looking for something smaller can still save in a big way. During the sale, the popular Spark 1.0+ model, with air conditioning and electric front windows as standard, is on offer at £6,875 – a saving of £2,000. That makes it one of the best value five-seat, five-door cars on the market, as well as one of the most distinctive and fun to drive. The only downside is that these offers can’t last forever – they’re only available until November 30, subject to availability. To find out more please call Stevens on 01293 540054 or visit our website at: www.chevroletcrawley. co.uk

The end of MOTs for Classic car owners? Classic cars and motorbikes could be exempted from the MoT test under new proposals Classic and historic vehicles are often very well maintained by their owners and have a much lower accident and MoT failure rate than newer cars. The current requirement for these vehicles to undergo an MoT test goes over and above the obligations set out in European legislation. As part of the Government’s commitment to cutting unnecessary red tape, new proposals would exempt private vehicles manufactured before 1960 from the MoT test, reducing costs for owners. Roads Minister Mike Penning said:

“We are committed to reducing regulation which places a financial burden on motorists without providing significant overall benefits. “Owners of classic cars and motorbikes are enthusiasts who maintain their vehicles well - they don’t need to be told to look after them, they’re out there every weekend checking the condition of the engine, tyres and bodywork. “That is why I am today putting forward proposals to scrap the MoT test for these vehicles - this will result in savings for the Government and for motorists.” Many of the features of the modern MoT test are not suitable for testing

classic vehicles built more fifty years ago. However, owners of classic vehicles will still be legally required to ensure that their cars are safe and in a proper condition to be on the road These changes are being taken forward separately from the Department for Transport’s main MOT review. The consultation started on November 3 and closes on January 26 2012. The consultation document can be found here: www.dft.gov.uk/ consultations. If I could afford to maintain a Classic, know how to maintain one and the MOT wasn’t a worry for me, I’m definitely in favour!

in a Langton upbeat despite defeat Hornets 10-goal romp hornetsreview.co.uk Football

Caretaker manager Hugo Langton was proud of his Horsham players despite returning home from Suffolk without a point. The Hornets continued to show signs of recovery, pushing high-flying Lowestoft all the way, only to succumb to a solitary, disputed goal by Adrian Forbes after 56 minutes. Horsham deserved more, but their failure to truly test goalkeeper Andy Reynolds proved their downfall as the Trawlerboys moved up to third in the table. Work commitments had left the Hornets without several players for their longest away trip of the season. With traffic problems delaying Ray Freeman’s arrival until half time, Senny Diedhiou was asked to play a lone role up front rather than his more natural midfield position. New signing Diedhiou, a former Napoli Academy player from Senegal, might have crowned an eye-catching debut had he not headed just over. Langton said: “We had a few issues in the build-up to the game, but the players were absolutely outstanding and represented the club brilliantly. “We weren’t too happy with their goal because there was a big element of handball about it. That’s the sort

of luck that goes against you when you’re down at the bottom. “The players were devastated after the game because they gave it everything, but I told them they should be proud of how they played. Even the Lowestoft fans hung around to applaud my players off the pitch.

“We had a plan to make ourselves difficult to break down and I thought we held our ground magnificently. “I’m not big on singling out individual players, especially as the whole side played well, but I thought Senny was outstanding, holding the ball up well and bringing the others into play. “He harassed their defence and gave them a really hard time. our back four and Ian Varley held the defence together in the way I hoped he would when we brought him in.” So Horsham remain at the foot of the table, but arguably a truer test of their credentials awaits with trips to lowly Tooting and Mitcham and fellow strugglers Aveley in the next two matches. Langton said: “I want them to keep building on performances like tonight (Tuesday) and last week at Hendon.

“We’ve got some crucial games coming up, with a chance of picking up some vital points. The players have shown they’ve got what it takes to compete in this league, with the new lads already making a difference.” Langton has appointed Craig Wilkins as assistant, describing him as “a terrific servant to Kent football”, after Richard Langley followed former Hornets boss Justin Luchford to Whitstable. He added: “I would like to clear up a comment I read on the fans’ forum, concerning speculation over my commitment to the role as manager. “Unless I am told otherwise, I fully intend to remain as manager for as long as I am wanted. I have no desire to be anywhere else and I hope this is highlighted by the changes I am making.”

Wright double but Donnelly fumes at ref Tom Norris Football

Horsham YMCA’s impressive away form continued with a 2-1 win at high-flying Peacehaven in Division 1 of the Sussex County League. But YM manager Sammy Donnelly said: “I was very disappointed with the referee. We played well against 12 men, at a difficult place and against a team who are third in the league. “I keep telling the lads that they’ve

got it in their locker, they can do it. We passed the ball around better. We defended from the front and George Hillier and Dean Wright were tremendous.” YM created very little in the first half as Peacehaven took full control, the home side’s best chance coming when Wes Millis crossed for midfielder Carl Dunk who fired wide. The Tye were made to rue their missed chances as YM took an undeserved lead into half time, Hillier providing a delightful through ball for strike partner Wright to tuck away

with aplomb. The second 45 was a much livelier affair, YM doubling their lead midway through the half when Wright coolly stabbed his second over the onrushing goalkeeper. Donnelly’s men created opportunities to kill off the hosts, but Dunk made up for his earlier miss by halving YM’s lead eight minutes from time. Hillier and Lee Wood squandered chances for the visitors before a fine defensive display eventually saw out a ludicrous 10 minutes of stoppage time.

Donnelly added: “Everyone played their part, but now I want that every week.”

Callum Nash scored a six-minute hat-trick as Horsham U15 won 10-1 at Felpham Colts U15 in the Arun and Chichester Youth League. The speedy striker struck after 14, 19 and 20 minutes as the young Hornets eased into a 6-0 interval lead. Harry Lee also hit a hat-trick, including a 35-yard rocket, while Will Kerr had to make do with two. Ross Williams and Andrew Roberts added one each. Liam Clarke continued his impressive goalscoring form as Horsham U14 beat Seaford Wasps U14 6-2 in the Sussex Sunday Youth League. Clarke and Tom Summerfield both scored twice, Finn Bigg and George Matthews once each. Matthews’ beautifully lofted strike from distance was arguably the pick of the bunch. Ali Kerr was unlucky not to get on the scoresheet as the Seaford goalkeeper did well to tip over his piledriver. Horsham U16 are through to the semi-finals of the Sussex Sunday Youth League Cup after winning 3-0 at Polegate Grasshoppers U16. Connor Cushing broke the deadlock from 25 yards before Jake Legrange smartly finished off Tom Killner-Brown’s cross. Man of the match Ben Collier added the third, shooting in off the crossbar from the edge of the box. Missed chances and poor defending cost Horsham YMCA U18 against Bognor Regis U18 in the Ryman Youth League. Max Love and Scott Murrell scored in a 3-2 home defeat. Roffey Robins Wanderers U16 are into the semi-finals of the Edwin Hill Cup after beating Horsham Sparrows U16 4-2. Louie Donnelly scored from long range before Toby Bridger played in Zac Chinn, whose delightful chip put Sparrows 2-1 ahead early in the second half. The prolific Zak Comber did the damage with a hat-trick, including a delicate lob, and Sparrows were not helped by an unfortunate own goal. Jamie Gandy and Stefan Miedzianowski impressed for the losing side. Broadbridge Heath U16 crashed out of the Plate, losing 8-2 at Maidenbower United Crusaders U16 despite goals by Adam Bolitho and Ben Martin. Jake Able hit the woodwork from long range and Oli Young’s penalty was saved after a foul on Martin. Broadbridge Heath U13 are through to the quarter-finals of the John Laker Memorial Cup, thanks to a 4-2 victory over Forest Row U13. Tom Haines scored his first goal for the club, while Jordan Bell, Mitchell Clark and Jack Sizzey also notched. Heath also progressed in the County Cup, beating Cuckfield Cosmos U13 2-0 in a cracking match. Joe Kirkham opened the scoring and Sizzey ghosted past four defenders before hitting a great second.

Horsham make extra man count to progress in Vase Times are Josh Tolhurst Rugby Union

Horsham progressed in the RFU Senior Vase, beating Winchester thanks to tries from Neal Holden and Jamie Gibbs. The home side were the first to draw blood. After only two minutes, they were awarded a penalty from a huge distance, which Matt Goodsir

Dan Bourne

impressively kicked over. Horsham looked quick and threatening with the ball in hand, always troubling the Winchester defence, and won another penalty. It was straight in front of the posts, but Goodsir missed and a Winchester penalty levelled the score at 3-3 to set up a tense second half. With most of the rugby being played in the middle of the pitch, neither team was able to trouble the opposition and create chances, but Horsham did seem most likely to make something happen.

Winchester were forced to play with 14 men when one of their players was sin-binned and Horsham saw this as an opportunity to take advantage. As the visitors were unable to cope with the sheer amount of players Horsham were throwing into mauls, Holden was bundled over the line for a converted try. Horsham were rampant and scored again when Sam Bell broke down the wing and popped the ball off to Gibbs, 15-3. Just as Winchester were restored

to 15 players, another player was sinbinned for dissent, making their task even harder. They did score a late consolation try, but it wasn’t enough as Horsham got the victory they wanted to continue their cup run. Horsham tries: Holden, Gibbs. Conversion: Goodsir. Penalty: Goodsir.

Declan Nwachukwu scored four tries as Horsham U15 won 45-15 at Chichester U15. Callum Tusler, Sean Richardson and Michael Watson also touched down, but the pick of the bunch was the final try. Horsham’s forwards drove down one side of the pitch before the backs moved the ball left and

Nwachukwu ran in his fourth. Horsham U13 also produced some fireworks in a 55-0 romp at Crawley U13. Oscar Nicholls led the way with a hat-trick of tries. Rasmus Madum and Ben Murphy got two each, while Oliver Lewis, Sam Cole, Chris Fennelly and Aaron Bullman completed the rout. Horsham have scored 91 points in their first two matches this season.

changing

Andy Stonestreet www.northwestsussexseagulls.co.uk

For the umpteenth weekend in a row, Albion kicked off a home game not at 3pm on a Saturday. This time it was Sunday at three. I have witnessed Sunday afternoon kick-offs before, but they have been very few and far between. Already this season, I have watched Albion on every day of the week except Thursday. Yesterday, although not for an Albion game, I even managed to fill that gap by watching England U19 against Denmark U19 at The Amex. Everyone keeps telling me I will have to get used to this, especially if Albion get to the Promised Land of the Premier League. I’m not sure I will – or even if I want to. Trying to keep up to date with all the fixture changes is starting to drive me slightly mad. It might have something to do with organising the NWSS coaches to The Amex. Hugo from the coach company has been a star as we have to keep changing when we want to hire his coaches. For the most part we have been able to notify NWSS members of the changes, but it’s not been easy. I doubt if TV executives ever consider the hassle they give fans who actually attend televised matches. Having said that, last weekend’s change was down to Mr Fawkes, or rather Lewes celebrating his failure to blow up Parliament. I and 20,000 others found ourselves watching a game of football at The Amex when we should have been sitting at home in front of the telly, dozing off after eating a Sunday roast. Barnsley were the visitors and many of their fans had decided the sofa in front of the fire was more appealing. Perhaps those who didn’t come down from Yorkshire to try out the padded seats, or the great pies, made the right choice. Their team didn’t really look good enough to extend our two-month winless streak. Once Gordon Greer had shown our strikers how to score, just before half time, the result was never in question. Ryan Harley scored Albion’s second early in the second half. We have a weekend off due to international fixtures but then face the daunting trip to table-topping Southampton. With that win under our belts, it will be a much more positive NWSS coach trip to Hampshire. Let’s hope for the same on the way back.

Young guns fire for Horsham Martin Read & Clare Turnbull Hockey

Horsham returned to winning ways, an outstanding 2-1 win at Holcombe 2nds elevating them to fifth in the table. Seriously depleted resources meant Horsham fielded a very young side, but the visitors opened their account after four minutes when 17-year-old Nathan Hill made good ground and fired home from close range. After the interval, Hill set up the second goal with a pass to 15-yearold John Kimberley, who converted in style. Horsham were indebted to another excellent display of goalkeeping by

Ed Heathcock, including a crucial penalty save. Holcombe scored a consolation goal before Duncan Howarth went close to increasing Horsham’s winning margin. Coach Sam Naismith said: “Congratulations to our young squad. They played brilliantly and there will be a few selection headaches when the senior players are available again.” Horsham Ladies secured their first league win in impressive style, 2-0 against mid-table visitors Harleston Magpies Ladies. Steph Dent and Zeph Hardy scored in the first half and Horsham maintained a tight grip after the break. Manager Jane Denman said: “We’ve been playing well enough to

Why Millais School girls are bouncing with enthusiasm Grace Jeffrey Youth Trampolining

Millais School girls Jordan Kennedy and Samantha Southern represented Great Britain in an international trampoline competition at the National Indoor Athletic Centre, Cardiff. The girls, who are both 15, competed against higher-grade opponents and were two of only three from Sussex in their age group. They did exceptionally well, with Sam finishing 18th overall and Jordan fifth. Sam said: “It was really scary at first and I felt as if I could have done a bit better, but it felt good to get through the routine. “We were going to Cardiff only to do a routine for one minute, so we made the most of the experience, even though we were nervous.” Jordan, who nearly had to withdraw

from the competition through illness, said: “I was the youngest girl in our age group and I was delighted with the result, especially as it was my first international event.”

win before this, yet somehow that’s eluded us. This week we dominated throughout and could have had a goal fest. “The team always competes and this win will spur them on to improve their position.” Tomorrow (Saturday) Horsham entertain Old Williamsonians at Broadbridge Heath (3pm) while Horsham Ladies travel to Maidstone Ladies. Horsham Boys U18 enjoyed an emphatic win at Bromley and Beckenham Boys U18 in the second round of the EHB Cup. The 6-3 scoreline against a strong side did not reflect the way Horsham dominated the game. Dan Rhodes and Jack Dean both scored twice, while Zac Chinn and Peter Rayward were also on target and Sam Johnson played well in goal. Horsham Girls U18 beat Maidenhead Girls U18 5-0 at Windsor in the equivalent competition, with goals by captain Jess Dean (two), Tessa Harwood (two) and Lizzie Wait.

Horsham Hawks U14 continued their impressive form with a third win on the bounce, 73-48 at Haywards Heath Eagles D U14. Despite missing a number of players and having a younger team than their opposition, Hawks started brightly and point guard Elliot Bailey (15 points) drove into the key for several early baskets. Eagles responded well but Jonathan Walsh (25) came into his own as Hawks led 18-14 at the end of the first period and 35-27 at half time. Walsh and Max Dodd (19) took numerous defensive rebounds to restrict Eagles to only eight points in the third period. Ola Edgal (eight), Adam O’Dell (four) and Matt Fuller (two) also got on the scoresheet for the table-topping Hawks. Horsham Hawks U12 made it a hat-trick of wins by beating Worthing D&D U12 53-39. Hawks’ successful squad was Abbie Reeves, Alexandra Malzer, Ellie Hutchinson, Freddie Winton, India Belfield, Joseph Cross, Louis Dishington, Tom Fuller, Jacob Merchant and Jamie Miller.
