A government minister appeared ‘bored’ by discussion of cuts to bus services, a campaigner claimed this week. Caroline Collins said Nick Herbert, MP for Arundel and South Downs, was “visibly frustrated” while talking to Cowfold residents about the under-threat 86 bus service. Mr Herbert, who is also the policing and criminal justice minister, told The Resident it was a matter for West Sussex County Council but said he would continue to take up campaigners’ concerns. The 86 serves Horsham, Southwater, West Grinstead, Partridge Green, Shermanbury, Cowfold, Bolney, Ansty, Cuckfield including Warden Park School, and Haywards Heath including the Princess Royal Hospital. The service was one of more than 60 highlighted by The Resident in May as being recommended for removal in September or October. Almost half of the services originally listed – including the 86 – have been spared the axe until at least April next year. But the future of these services remains uncertain, so Mrs Collins, Dawn Jelley and Anita Casey, all from Cowfold, met Mr Herbert to express their concerns. Mrs Collins told The Resident: “Nick is a minister and as such he shocked us by

government policy. “He went on to compare the seriousness of the UK’s financial situation to that of Greece, Italy and Spain, saying we have to be realistic. “He didn’t explain why his government had managed to find £250 million to reinstate weekly bin collections and couldn’t say why this pot of gold hadn’t been diverted to needy causes such as public transport or adult services. “These funds have been diverted to where the highest number of voters can be found, instead of to those with the greatest need. The government makes decisions based on how many votes they will win or lose. “Rural public bus services will be reduced when subsidies are removed and people with learning difficulties will have their support networks cut when their funding is taken away. “Our Conservative county council blames the lack of funding on the government but chooses soft targets when making cuts. This ensures a minimum loss of votes at the next elections and shows no real compassion or understanding for the true needs of their residents.” Mr Herbert, who is a rising star of the government and respected even by many of his opponents, told The Resident: “I was happy to meet the bus campaigners in my surgery and of course I understand their concerns. “These decisions are for the county council and, as I tried to explain, the reality is that savings have to be made across the public sector. “Naturally as a minister I support government policy, but I always try to take up concerns on behalf of my constituents. I have already done so in this case and I will do so again.” Mrs Collins this week visited Manchester to take part in the Campaign for Better Transport’s protest on a bus near the Conservative Party

RSA has handed over a restored minibus to a charity for poor children in Romania. The Horsham-based company presented the vehicle to Stupini Kids before a fundraising event at Mannings Heath Golf Club, supported by Kings Church, Horsham. Stupini was once a village, but is now a very poor suburb of Brasov, Romania. Adrian Brown, UK chief executive for RSA, said: “We are absolutely delighted to be able to help the Stupini Kids charity in Romania. “Our fantastic team of technicians and numerous people across

Venue needed for Poppy Appeal Donation Station One of the most popular charities in Horsham needs a new base. Dianne Loates, secretary of the Royal British Legion’s Horsham branch, is appealing for help from our readers to ensure the Poppy Appeal is as successful as ever in our area. Mrs Loates, the district’s Poppy Appeal organiser, told The Resident: “It seems the Poppy Donation Station, so popular over the last two years, will not appear in Horsham town centre unless some kind letting agent or owner can give us some space. “The Poppy Appeal is a registered charity. We don’t sell anything, we just ask for donations for your poppies, poppy pins, wristbands, wreaths and crosses. We are also a source of information on the Poppy Appeal and the Royal British Legion. “Last year, Horsham district kindly donated over £32,000 to the appeal. It would be a shame not to be able to continue raising this money, which is much needed by our Armed Forces and their families.” Mrs Loates said the appeal needed a home for the Donation Station from October 15 or October 22 to November 21. Boundary Commission got it wrong Information given to The Resident by the Boundary Commission for England (BCE) was incorrect. The BCE is consulting on its initial proposals, which are designed to reduce differences in the number of electors and to cut the number of seats in England from 533 to 502. A Commission spokesman last month told The Resident that no changes were proposed to the Horsham constituency of MP Francis Maude. But the BCE is actually proposing to transfer Copthorne and Worth from the Horsham constituency to Crawley. Arundel and South Downs would gain Plaistow and Easebourne from Chichester plus Bolney from Mid Sussex, but lose Walberton and Barnham to Bognor Regis and Littlehampton. Horsham would have an electorate of 73,259 (currently 77,564), Arundel and South Downs 75,453 (76,835). Commission secretary Simon James said: “Parliament has set clear rules on what we can and can’t do when it comes to developing our initial proposals. “We have found a solution that we think best meets Parliament’s rules and now we want to know what people think of our initial proposals.” Horsham District Council will discuss the issue on October 19. Horsham district is contributing to major new research into extreme weather. Researchers from Durham University and Heriot-Watt University are working with three councils – Horsham District Council, West Sussex County Council and the East Riding of Yorkshire Council. They have mapped the areas of England most likely to face extreme weather events. Many areas projected to see an increase in floods, heatwaves and coldwaves over the next 30 years may also need to care for a higher proportion of vulnerable older people. The government-funded study highlights the potential vulnerability of older populations in rural regions, often in coastal areas. Cllr Robert Nye, leader of Horsham District Council, said: “The snowfall in the last couple of winters has shown the impact that extreme weather can have on many people in the UK. “Future changes to the climate could mean we experience more extreme weather, such as heatwaves and flooding. Such events can have a disproportionate impact on

older vulnerable people, particularly where they are reliant on health and social care. “Horsham district is due to experience a rapid increase in the number of people over the age of 60 in the next 20 years. “With this in mind, Horsham District Council has started work on identifying the impacts that this could have on our many services and what changes will be needed. “This study, carried out and funded by Durham University and Heriot-Watt University, will make an invaluable contribution to the information that we have and enable us to prepare more effectively for extreme weather events.”

Cllr Lionel Barnard, deputy leader of West Sussex County Council, said: “The project forms part of our adaptation work, helping all the county council’s services adapt to a changing climate. “It will help ensure we will be

able to continue to deliver critical services, even during more frequent extreme weather events.” Prof Sarah Curtis, of Durham University, said: “Service providers must take into account the increasing numbers of retired people living in rural settlements and moving to the coast. “In some areas the oldest population will more than double by 2031, so needs for health and social care provision will increase. “When extreme weather events occur, special measures are needed to make sure people have access to the care they need in the community as well as in hospitals. “Planning is important to try to keep road networks and utilities functioning, to ensure community care teams can reach their clients and to help people manage in their homes in extreme weather.” Prof Dimitry Val, of Heriot-Watt University, said: “The combination of extreme weather and increasing numbers of older people is likely to increase the risks for infrastructure, including hospitals and health centres.” The next phase of the project will involve case study work with councils, examining the impact of extreme weather on health and social care delivery and how to make these systems more resilient.

News in Brief Fighting for life A cyclist was still in a critical condition this week after being involved in a collision with a car in Horsham. The collision with an Audi happened in Blackbridge Lane, at the junction with Hengist Close, shortly after 6pm on Thursday last week. The cyclist, a 36-year old local man, sustained head and leg injuries and was taken by air ambulance (pictured) to St George’s Hospital, Tooting. The car driver, a 41-year-old local man, was unhurt. Hunting charges The court case against four people facing hunting charges has been adjourned until November 10. Henry James Hawksfield, 58, of Bines Road, Partridge Green, Rachel Holdsworth, of Rock Road, Washington, Neil Millard, 44, of Dragons Lane, Shipley, and Andrew Phillis, 50, of Totnes, Devon, face four charges. They are alleged to have breached Section 1 of the Hunting Act 2004 at meets of the Crawley and Horsham Hunt – in Southwater on January 18, in Shermanbury on January 25 and in Twineham and Shermanbury on February 15.

Rail-ly good art Artwork by Collyer’s A-level students is on display at Horsham railway station. The station is undergoing a major refurbishment, with large hoardings and fences part of the project, so the Sussex Community Rail Partnership (CRP) asked the college to show off students’ work. The display features 20 large panels, showcasing about 60 pieces of art including drawings, paintings and photographs. Collyer’s Art teacher Ian McAlister said: “The student art will be on display for most of the year and it will be Horsham’s first outdoor gallery. “The work will be seen throughout the station and may eventually form part of a permanent display when

renovations are complete.” Principal Jackie Johnston said: “We are delighted to be involved in this creative project, as it provides a great opportunity for our young artists to showcase their talent. “The outstanding quality of the work on show is a reflection of their fantastic ability. “We are incredibly proud of our students. They are a credit to Collyer’s and our superb Art department.” Sarah Evans, of Southern Railway, said: “When we were approached by the CRP with the idea of displaying the artwork we jumped at it. “The outside of the station has certainly been brightened up and the quality of each piece of art is outstanding.”

Games fun and competition as youngsters reach higher

Eighty youngsters descended on Christ’s Hospital School for the Sussex Reaching Higher Games, organised by Horsham District Council’s Leisure Link team. The games included sports competitions for children and young people with disabilities, as well as an activity area and swimming slots for those of a less competitive nature, siblings and other family members. Many of the children were enjoying their first competitive experience. The cricket, run by Horsham

Leisure Link coach Fred Bridges, involved three teams – Horsham’s Aiming High, Hastings and Oak Grove College, Worthing. Horsham beat Hastings 252-232 and Oak Grove 248-220 to take the title, with a squad of Jamie Lee, Robert Finlay, Sidney Whittaker, Kieren Stevens, Simon Tomlinson, Callum Budd and Jan Williams-Bailey. Nine competitors entered the table tennis event, in which the standard of play was high. Horsham Table Tennis Club

(HTTC) representatives Cameron Parfitt and Stuart Cutler reached the final group shootout, won by England team wheelchair player Tyler Paul. Martin Jezisek, event leader and HTTC head coach, said: “We only gave out two medals, but in truth every player deserved one. All the players rose to the competitive challenge. “Some of these players could go on to great things if they train hard and believe in themselves.” Mr Jezisek thanked the Christ’s Hospital students who umpired all of the table tennis matches in disciplined style. Indeed all elements of the day were well supported by young sports leaders from the school. A total of 22 people entered the trampolining in front of a sizeable crowd, all reacting superbly to the pressure and making it a tough job for the judges. The football was organised by Forest Flyers coach Steve Cooling and contested in under-16 and over-16 sections on excellent pitches. Coaches Kieran Green and Gary Marlow were impressed by the quality of play in the badminton and tennis respectively, while the athletics was contested by a young field under the stewardship of Hannah Jennings.

News in Brief New yellow peril Parking restrictions designed to improve road safety at Shooting Field, Steyning, have been agreed by Chanctonbury county local committee. Cllr Frank Wilkinson, committee chairman, said: “The committee agreed that single and double-yellow line waiting restrictions will improve road safety and prevent dangerous parking near junctions. “This will particularly help the safety of children attending the two schools in the area.” The committee agreed to give a £350 Community Initiative Fund grant to the Steyning 10:10 Campaign for the purchase of three reusable, biodegradable promotional banners, the printing of leaflets for Insulation Month and a Shop Local directory. Cllr Wilkinson added: “Our Community Initiative Fund is available to support groups and organisations with local community projects. Roffey development Proposed development in Roffey was discussed at the Millennium Hall. Guinness Trust spokesman David Foden said: “We displayed our proposals for a residential development of the land at 105-113 Crawley Road and 2a Little Haven Lane. “This stakeholder consultation event was promised at the public meeting which I attended at the Millennium Hall earlier in the year. The architect, our development project manager and myself were available to answer questions. “We are taking stock of comment received and finalising discussions with the highways department and the planning office ahead of our planning application being submitted. “We hope to make this application as quickly as possible. The application will also seek approval for the demolition of the existing buildings.”

‘Spurs’ in town A Spurs Legends team will face Redhill company Jedris at Gorings Mead, home of Horsham YMCA FC, on Sunday. Money raised will go to St Catherine’s Hospice and Breakthrough Breast Cancer, in memory of Sue Cole who died six years ago. Organisers stress they cannot guarantee who will appear, but former England international Andy Sinton, Mark Falco, Tony Galvin, David Howells, John Lacy, Mark Stimson and Clive Wilson are among those who regularly play for the Spurs team. The match will kick off at 2pm, with gates opening at midday. Admission is £5 per adult including a programme, £1 for children aged three or older and free for children under three. New pupils step out to make big step up Year 7 pupils at The Forest School enjoyed a week of outdoor learning during their Discovery Week. After an overnight two-day stay at Lodge Hill Activity Centre and a day of watersports activities at Southwater Country Park, the boys have settled into the classroom with their new friends. They took part in a wide variety of activities, including outdoor art workshops, tunnelling, low ropes, raft-building and kayaking – working with new friends, overcoming challenges and learning together. Nick Herbert, MP for Arundel and South Downs, presented schoolchildren with the rewards they earned in the Tesco for Schools and Clubs scheme. The presentation took place at the Tesco Metro store in Pulborough. The schools involved were St Mary’s Primary School in Pulborough, St James’ Primary School in Coldwaltham and Fittleworth First School. The scheme has benefited schools and clubs across the country by giving away new items, such as IT products, sports kits and outdoor learning tools. Store manager Mark Cheeseman said: “Thousands of customers have been collecting vouchers to help their local schools and clubs get new equipment, showing what can happen when a whole community gets involved. “We would also like to thank Nick Herbert for his time to celebrate the success of this scheme in our area.” Mr Herbert said: “It was a pleasure to join the schoolchildren and teachers to receive the new equipment. Thank you to Tesco and to the many people who have been collecting vouchers for their local schools.”

A public consultation about the future of West Sussex youth services will finish on Friday next week, October 14. County councillor Peter Evans, Cabinet member for children and families, said: “There is still time for people to express their views. I want to stress again that no final decisions have been taken.” When the consultation started, Cllr Evans said: “We need to consider new and imaginative ways to provide services. Teenage life in perspective I admire young Alex Christie for expressing his anxieties about leaving what appears to be a sheltered home life for the trials that university life might produce (The Resident, September 30). What he illustrates is the fact that each generation of young men and women have to face problems that life throws up at any particular point in time. I suggest that Alex stands in the shoes of an 18-year-old youth in 1914 or perhaps 1939. What did the future hold for them? Even my own generation had to face the prospect of two years’ military service immediately after leaving school – at a time of continuing post-war austerity when the prospect of a university education was the preserve of the few.

National Service was my University of Life. Against this background, I consider Alex Christie should count himself extremely fortunate. Doubtless he will prosper at university, making new friends and quickly learning to fend for himself, in the secure knowledge that his home comforts – along with his beer – remain intact. That said, I don’t envy the substantial debt he will inherit following graduation or the prospect of finding a rewarding job. But other young men have had to face far greater challenges, such as going over the top on the Somme or wading ashore on D-Day, which should bring some perspective to Alex Christie’s anxieties. The joy of reading may be lost I may be young but I must admit I’m a bit of a Luddite. Lugging a generous amount of books to Horsham Library this week, reopened after its “improvements”, I looked forward to meeting the helpful librarian who would relieve me of my burden. I was met with the soulless relative of a Teletubby. Yes, the selfservice machines have invaded the library. It is understandable that the library wants a modern, efficient way of serving the public, but will the new self-service equipment really provide a better experience? Minutes earlier I had been to Sainsbury’s. I waited for the man in front to complete his purchase – only to find myself in the same position five minutes later, with a Sainsbury’s employee furiously punching numbers into his

self-service screen and ultimately calling for back up. So I wasn’t alien to the invasion of machines or the frustrations they can generate. Back in the library, my mechanical foe struggled to cope with the return of more than two books at any time and soon my confused demeanour attracted the attention of a librarian. She was friendly and understanding of my struggles and I was soon on my way out, but I couldn’t help but feel a twinge of sadness. I still remember the excitement of collecting my trusty library card (a sheltered childhood, I know) from Horsham Library many years ago. It’s a shame that the joy reading can bring may, with the rise of technology, be lost on future generations. I’d give a smile and a chat over an “error” report any day. Why 20’s plenty on the roads Rather than being an added imposition, bus operators should see 20 mph limits as benefiting their customers and resulting in lower operating costs. Every bus journey starts and ends with a pedestrian journey. Speed limits of 20 mph make it safer, easier and more pleasant for bus users, particularly older people and those who are less mobile, to get to the bus stop. Most buses spend very little time travelling at more than 20

mph, particularly in residential areas. Bus passengers can often find speeds above 20 mph uncomfortable, especially in tight residential roads or town centres. The energy used to take a bus from 0 mph to 30 mph is more than double that required to get up to 20 mph. Limits of 20 mph also encourage smoother driving with less acceleration and braking, helping to reduce fuel consumption, an everincreasing cost for bus companies. ELO, ELO, what’s all this then? Could somebody please enlighten me as to what ‘blue sky thinking’ means? Prime Minister David Cameron has bandied it around and recently Horsham District Council leader Robert Nye has repeated it parrot fashion in the press (The Resident, September 23).

This expression reminds me of the 1960s and early-1970s, when the hippy era was at its height. I can just imagine then a longhaired, droopy-moustached, tank top wearing, ‘way out’ character saying: “Yeah man, ya godda get some blue sky thinking.” Bewildered of Horsham

Response to ‘Bewildered’ The term ‘blue sky thinking’ is not one I use very much, so this quote was probably one issued on my behalf (yes, by the council’s press office – News Editor). My personal preference is ‘out of the box’ thinking. There are no doubt a number of mental pictures that could arise from this description, but it

is probably best if I refrain! Ultimately all we are trying to do is describe innovative thinking. To this I hear the question coming back: “Why do you not just say innovative thinking?” My only defence is that we are blessed with one of the world’s most descriptive languages. Flying success Air Cadets from Steyning have enjoyed a Summer of success in a range of activities. Cpl Sean Alexander, 16, visited the British Army base at Rheindalen, Germany, and later spent 10 days at RAF Kenley learning to be a glider pilot. He achieved his Gold Gliding Wings after flying solo. After flying in a Tutor at RAF Benson with Oren Whibley, Sam Finch and Jack March, 14-year-old Sam Tombs said: “It was exhilarating and aerobatics were definitely the best bit!” At the county swimming gala, Cpl Georgie Carpenter, 16, won a gold medal and two silvers, while Cdt Georgie Saunders, 13, won a gold, silver and bronze. This placed the squadron second in the senior girls and third in the junior girls overall. Among many other activities, cadets helped ensure the smooth running of Shoreham Air Show and Dunsfold Wings and Wheels. Steyning Squadron parades at the Cadet Centre, Shooting Field, from 7.30pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Firefighters spent more than four hours tackling this blaze in a barn off Church Street, West Chiltington. They descended on the scene from Horsham, Billingshurst, Steyning, Storrington, Burgess Hill, Haywards Heath, Turners Hill and Worthing after about 12 tonnes of baled hay caught fire. A spokesman for West Sussex Fire and Rescue initially said the blaze, last Friday afternoon and evening, had been started deliberately. But a spokesman for Sussex Police told The Resident this week: “Following an examination of the scene by the fire investigator and house-to-house inquiries by local officers, no evidence was found to suggest the fire had been deliberately ignited.”

The final stop on our eight-week journey down the Steyning Line lies in the most pleasant of rural villages. A well-maintained station at Bramber could be found just south of the present-day A283 roundabout and the line from Steyning mainly followed the direction of today’s Steyning bypass. The station was known for having the only electric lighting on the line as well as for its long platforms. Bramber was your typical quiet, rural station, but in the holidays or on a sunny weekend the station would be packed with visitors. Trains would bring down excited Londoners to experience the country air. Many would visit the 11thcentury castle, where they could draw the picturesque ruins or picnic and play among them. In addition to castle visitors, Bramber station dealt with market traffic and those who wanted to try out Bramber’s famed tea rooms. Some would go to Potter’s Museum, particularly popular in Victorian times for its collection of taxidermy. Even in Winter, Bramber attracted attention. When the nearby fields flooded over in the cold, people would come from far and wide to skate across the open expanses. The station also dealt with many accidental visitors. Tony Carter, the station master for Steyning, also covering Bramber, would hear of confused passengers for Worthing. Passengers from Steyning, aiming for Worthing, were advised to change at Shoreham, but many simply rejoined the Steyning Line at the coast and found themselves having to hop off at the next stop – Bramber! Fortunately, most passengers did intend to stop for a while in Bramber. Phillip Gardner recalls visiting his grandfather, the signalman at Bramber. To a young boy, Horsham seemed a million miles away, although it was actually more like 39 minutes. With twice-hourly trains to Horsham, close access to the coast and a vital link to London, Bramber station was valued by locals. It is easy to simply view the station as a route into a rural Sussex village, but to these people it was an important way out. Even in the 1950s, not every family owned a car. This is not to say that Bramber lacked local innovation. Even when parts of the track were replaced, these found good local use in the

construction of a house near the Saxon church in Botolphs. The year before this, on November 11, 1918, station master Mr Chatfield rang the station bell to announce the end of World War I. With three sons posted in France, he must have been a relieved man. Immense pride and care was taken over the appearance of the station. With the beauty of its castle ruins to live up to, high standards must have been expected. Roses were positioned by the doorway and flowers placed in the ladies’ waiting room. Cleaning was thorough and a fire roared in Winter. Staff were rewarded for their efforts as the station received regular nominations for awards. In June 1961, commendations were given to staff by the parish council, and the British Transport Commission gave Bramber an award for best-kept station.

Sadly though, this good work could not prevent the station’s closure. The Beeching Axe struck in 1966 and by 1969 the station had been demolished. The Steyning bypass covers most of the old line near where Bramber station once operated. Talk of it had started in the early Sixties, with the hope of avoiding disruption to rail activities. But once the railway had gone, it seemed more sensible – and cheaper – to take advantage of the disused track bed. So as we pass southwards out of Bramber we reach the end of our journey. The Steyning Line ran on to Shoreham, where links to Brighton brought plenty of business, but it is the rural sections of the line that conjure the most nostalgia. George Cockman, a teacher at Steyning Grammar and a Steyning Line enthusiast, said of the line’s closure: “The web was broken, the spell was not.” With many people too young to remember a line that ended operations 45 years ago, perhaps now is the time for us to find out more about our local past. The days of spotting glow worms by the track, swimming under the rail bridge and putting out the station lights may have gone, but tales of the Steyning Line have not.

Some of us need them daily. “Many who are not directly bus users have not realised that a public bus is much more than the ability for a few to get from A to B. “A public bus provides the ability for rural dwellers to reach their workplaces. Companies on a threatened bus route are supporting the campaign to save the service. About 20 businesses, including those shown on this page, appear on a leaflet produced by the Save the 86 Bus Campaign. Many are offering discounts to people who show tickets from the route on the same day, subject to terms and conditions. Plans for better business park links West Sussex County Council’s Deputy Leader, Lionel Barnard, has been in touch with chairmen from the County Local Committee to find out how local enterprises could be better supported. The efforts will focus particularly on business parks and issues that are expected to be raised include road maintenance and the work that local businesses think needs to be publicly funded to maintain essential supply chains. Lionel Barnard said: “West Sussex is a great place to live, but it’s also a great place to do business. We want to do all we can to encourage businesses to invest in our county and a reliable road network is just one of the issues we want to focus on.” The County Council already makes contributions to economic development, including working with partners through the Gatwick Diamond Initiative, Coastal West Sussex Partnership, West Sussex Rural Partnership and the Coast to Capital Local Enterprise Partnership. The County Council has also campaigned for improvements to the A27.

Retail outlets and other businesses are gearing up for the Christmas rush by taking part in the campaign that encourages them to ‘dress for success’. As part of ‘Dressed for Success’, businesses are having one-to-one window dressing coaching sessions at discounted prices, designed to help them develop commercial knowledge and ensure their windows and displays are having maximum impact over the Christmas period and beyond. The sessions are carried out with individual vendors, one-on-one, and provide businesses with expert knowledge, relevant to their customers, business and brand; enabling them to maximise their sales. They are also taught how to

evaluate and improve external displays and presentation, use window dressing and display skills to promote their business and create high impact displays that sell, plus gain best practice knowledge relevant to the business.

things up and focussing on the issues surrounding having two floors, ensuring our branding and messages are clear to customers. “Ellie from Metamorphosis is not only creative and full of useful ideas, but she has a great business grounding - a rare combination, which is sharpening our minds and giving us real perspective”. From November 18, the public will be encouraged to get voting for their favourite business window or display, either online or by posting a vote at one of the designated post boxes to be set up in the town. Speakers’ support at networking event Twenty-five people from the local business community attended the Business Builder Club networking event this week. Rick Palmer from the Federation of Small businesses (FSB) spoke to the group about the reasons the federation has attracted more than 200,000 members across all industries since it was founded in 1974. Spofforths’ Scottish adventure raises £5k for charity A team made up of staff members from Spofforths and some of their clients, came in fourth place out of 40 in a recent charity highland adventure race. The group from the firm of chartered accountants and tax advisers went from east to west Scotland in just 10 hours and 59 minutes, raising money for the Mitchemp Trust. The route involved biking from Inverness Castle along the length of Loch Ness, then canoeing through the Caledonian Canal, followed by a hike up and down Ben Nevis. After completing the race, Michael Fowler, a chartered financial planner at Spofforths said: “The event was fantastic. The race itself was very tough, with diversions and avoiding fallen trees. “The mountain bike course was over 42 miles long and the total climb was 4520 feet. It was very windy over the weekend and at the top of Ben Nevis gusts were recorded at 70 mph with a ‘wind chill ‘ of minus 8 C.” In addition to Michael, the team included Felise Osborne from the Brighton branch, client manager Aaron Knight from Chichester and trainee accountant Jake Standing from the firm’s Worthing office. Clients, Andrew Sweet from BioDot and Rob Searle from Tangmere Airfield Nurseries also took part. Together the team has raised more than £5,000 for the Mitchemp Trust, which aims to give vulnerable young people the hope, confidence and skills to meet the challenges they may face in life.

Let the town’s music battle commence Local bands are warming up for the annual competition, which could win them a cash prize and propel them into the spotlight The Horsham Battle of the Bands kicks off this Sunday, October 9 at the Chameleon Club in Horsham Park.

The event, which starts at 6.30pm, is the first of three original music heats that will determine who goes through to a grand final on Friday, October 28. The winner of the competition will receive £500 cash. Six bands will compete this weekend, each vying for votes from the judges and the audience. And with the audience votes contributing directly to the results, the bands will be depending on their fans to show up and show their support. First and second place in each heat will qualify for the final this year. Playing this Sunday are The Glass Room, Moments Too Late, Avalanche, A Room Swept White, Two Types of Clothing and One Less Than Perfect. Tickets are £3 at the door. ‘That’s Entertainment’. You only have to see the name of the showcase to understand what it’s all about. Living up to the title with non-stop laughter due to Chairman Colin’s wit and the sight of a man dressed in a large, floral dress singing his heart out, you can see why this was its fourth year. Featuring songs from the 1920’s to today and varying from chorus

numbers, solos and duets, the performances really showed off the vocalists in the cast. To better this even further, there wasn’t a lack of dance either, with tap, ballet and modern to name a few. Su Gallymore and Tim Wheeler owned the stage with a ballroom dance to ‘Stepping out with My Baby’. Swirls, twirls and a cosy connection kept the audience in awe of a dance that nowadays seems less popular. After seeing that performance, it shouldn’t be! ‘Little Girls’ from the musical Annie and ‘I Hate Men’, where a flower pot was thrown at the audience to flaunt her fury and hatred towards the opposite sex. (She really didn’t like them!) Musical songs are a necessity in showcases, and this one didn’t lack them, presenting numbers like ‘Stars’ from Les Miserables, ‘A Little Priest’ from Sweeny Todd and ‘As Long As He Needs Me’ from Oliver Twist. However, entertainment wouldn’t be entertainment without a few songs which give you a giggle. ‘Let’s Do It’ was a hilarious highlight; the lyrics ‘wear your baggy

Y-fronts with loose elastic’ had spectators in stitches and smiles all round. Constant audience participation made the show a winner, as did daringly different designs for each costume. Those included dainty dresses, shimmering sequins, tuxedos and even a farmer’s outfit demonstrated the thought and preparation that went into this project. Another show is already anticipated for 2012 for more fiery footwork and clowning around. Be there for a wave of enthusiasm because, well, that’s entertainment.

Rugby Club and he’s well on the way to making it a venue that has something for everyone - where individuals and families, whether they are members or not, can go to enjoy some rugby, have a sociable drink, or attend an event. John said: “I’ve always thrived when I get to take somewhere and make it better. I did it in previous jobs, and at both my shops and now, I’m doing it here. “The Rugby Club is already a great place to be and the team is doing really well so it’s an exciting time here. It’s fun and there is a great atmosphere, it’s just that not enough people know that!” One of John’s first contributions (as well as good coffee and a jukebox) has been getting some of the team’s buffest players to get their kit off for a calendar. That will be on sale soon and will raise money for the Every Man Cancer charity. In addition, plans are underway for a big comedy night next year and John is also working on a ‘budget wedding’ concept. But that’s next year. Over the coming weeks, there are two spectacular events planned at the venue. On Saturday, November 5, there’s Firework Night, with a giant bonfire and a prize draw to win an LCD TV. Plus, Ladies Night is coming to Horsham.

The Numberjacks need your help Superheroes from CBeebies take on the meanies in a live show. And they are recruiting little ones to be their trusty sidekick The ten superheroes who live inside a sofa are leaving the house (and the TV screen) for their first live show! The Numberjacks is an award winning TV programme for kids, which

When many of us are struggling with new routines, this injection of joie de vivre is most welcome. to enjoy Super Sunday’s football. This is certainly not my idea of a super Sunday! I retaliated with a swift move to the beach in order to enjoy the full benefits of the tropical weather – and avoid the north London derby. With the water lapping over the rocks, a cloudless blue sky, a table by the sea with a chilled glass of Pinot Grigio and a large Bentley with a Monaco number plate parked nearby, it was easy to imagine myself back in the South of France – until a woman shouted, “Oi, Kylie, ger off them rocks na!”, breaking the reverie and transporting me back with a jolt to Worthing beach. Oh well, Cannes it was not, but it was still a lovely day. The sun’s paintbrush had highlighted all the ice cream shades of the houses alongside the waterfront and the trees were ablaze with colour. A rare combination at this time of year and one to savour as it may well be another 26 years before we experience such a phenomenon again. The last recorded October heatwave was in 1985 – not that I can remember that far back of course!

Top tips to curb childhood allergies The Sussex NHS Trust has highlighted that allergies in childhood are on the increase in the county with cases resulting in hospitalisation increasing by 6% in the last 10 years. Given that many cases may be caused by a reaction to animals, a local veterinary surgery wants to clear up a common misunderstanding whilst, at the same time, offering a solution to allergies to pets. Many people believe that the allergic properties of animals stems from the fur. However, Arthur Lodge Veterinary Surgery in Horsham suggests that, for the majority of animals, this

Hey Horshamites... Say hello to your new columnist! I have lived in Horsham all my life but have recently graduated from Bournemouth University with a 2:1 degree in Multi-Media Journalism. I’m obsessed with fashion, beauty, celebrity and fitness as well as loads of other stuff including films, food, reading etc. so this could turn out to be a very varied column! This week I shall be focusing on my current favourite Autumn/Winter trends, what with the weather becoming more miserable lately I felt it was rather apt.

Aubergine No, not the vegetable, but the dark shade of purple that seems to be everywhere at the moment. I bought a pair of jeans in this colour from Next and I absolutely love them – they’re flattering like black but give you more of an edge. I wear mine with a cream chiffon blouse but they can be dressed down with a simple tee and converse pumps. Teal Another ‘in’ colour for the season, teal just seems to go so well with tweed to form a really mature yet

modern combo. I’ve also noticed this colour on bags and tights, which would be an effortless way to update your wardrobe for AW11.

Leather An accent of leather, whether it’s on a clutch, dress or a pair of trousers instantly makes an outfit look ‘chic’ and Hollywood. Luckily it’s solely a trend for A/W as it would be so uncomfortable in the Summer months! MAC make-up I’ve heard people raving about this make-up brand for a number of years now but I’ve only just got into it in the past year or so. There’s something about splashing your wages on MAC make-up that makes you feel ever so grown up and sophisticated. I’ve come to learn that it has earned its prestigious reputation through not only good quality make-up at decent prices - (well it’s cheaper than Chanel but far dearer than your standard Rimmel or Maybelline) but also it’s the range on offer that sets it apart. It’s literally triple or quadruple the size of your average make-up stand! My favourites include their lipsticks (any shade or finish, I’m not fussy), foundations (mainly Pro Longwear but I’ve heard good things about Face & Body, too) and brushes, which last for years. I can’t wait to try their eyeshadows next!

Pussy bow blouses This is a trend that seems to come back in year after year, but I’ve recently been eyeing up a few pussy bow blouses at work and they just seem perfect for those day-to-evening occasions. You can dress it down with skinny jeans and pumps, or dress it up with a bodycon skirt or leather trousers and lashings of embellished jewellery. I know I’ll be buying one for winter!

Stars Ever since designers Dolce & Gabbana donned stars on their latest runway collection (which Khloe Kardashian sported lately), the high street has been awash with starry emblazoned designs. I have to say at first I was rather reluctant to jump on the bangwagon and saw it as a trend that would pass by, but now I’m dying to get my hands on a starry blouse or bodycon dress. I’ve seen a fab shirt in Tesco so I’m just waiting for the big Clubcard Voucher Exchange where hopefully I’ll get it for half the price.

Restoring confidence in the property market In the current economic climate people have greatly lost confidence in the property market. More than anything they are holding back, treating this economic situation like the war effort; storing equity and saving plans until everything looks a bit brighter and people can emerge from their shelters safe in the knowledge that a bombshell is not coming their way. For the first time since September last year a greater proportion of respondents think that house prices will rise rather than fall in the following 12 months.” Post-recession recovery is all about regaining confidence. Following the stock market crash of October 1929 it took the US government three years to launch a series of measures aimed at restoring confidence. People need to take lessons from history and understand that things will never improve unless we believe that they

can and will. Mr Broadhead continues: “There have been a number of encouraging signs that the worst of the property crash has passed recently and the Property Tracker shows that people think both that property prices will now rise and that now is a good time to buy. “There appears to be a little less negativity in consumers’ opinions on the housing market, but it remains to be seen whether this is just a blip or the start of a trend.’ The importance of this rise in positivity becoming a trend rather than a blip is crucial. Investing in property continues to be one of the most positive investments an individual can make, and by taking that leap of faith and emerging from the shadows of the shelters of recession, people are beginning to fight back and regain a confidence in the property market which can help it begin its steady ‘post-war’ recovery.

Our house, built in the Thirties, has small clay tiles – a fair number of which were broken in one area when an amateur went up to erect a television aerial. A quote to take off the ridge tiles (mortar is going) and replace the tiles is reasonable (£450) but the roofer also suggests that he should pressure-wash the tiles and apply a waterproof coating. There is no sign of moss or significant algae, but he says it will extend the life of the tiles by 25 years. I am dubious about the wisdom of having this done. Do you have any advice?

I suspect that the person who you think is charging you a “reasonable” price is not actually a trained roofer, but a bit of a con man. £450 sounds to me like a good week’s wage for most people in today’s economic climate. I doubt whether your man is planning to spend a full working week of his life up on your roof, however. And I am not clear about what you mean when you say your mortar is “going”. Mortar is a sacrificial medium, whether it is between courses of bricks or bedding ridge tiles on top of roofs. Surface weathering of mortar is to be expected, and not necessarily a sign that wholesale replacement is required. As regards the idea that roof tiles should be pressurewashed and waterproofed, I’m afraid that this is bunkum. Pressure-washing will remove a fine surface layer which will actually shorten the life of roof tiles, rather than extend it. Transport Secretary Philip Hammond has announced his intention to consult on raising the national speed limit on motorways from 70 to 80 miles per hour. The Government plans to launch a full public consultation on the issue later this year with a view to implementing any change in early 2013. Vehicles have changed dramatically since the current national speed limit was set in 1965. Technological advances mean that cars are significantly safer than they were - contributing to a fall of more than 75% in the number of people killed on British roads since 1965. That is why the Government feels it is now time to look again at whether the speed limit set in 1965 is still appropriate. Have your say – I’m strongly against the raised speed limit, it’ll influence more and more people to drive at 90mph, and those, like me, who have underpowered cars and can’t drive at 80mph. Under-fire manager Justin Luchford has accepted responsibility for Horsham’s disappointing FA Cup exit. A late Tony Nwachukwu penalty salvaged a 2-2 draw at Burnham in the second qualifying round, but the Hornets were beaten 3-2 in the replay at Gorings Mead. Luchford was subject to heavy criticism from fans on Tuesday and it did not go unnoticed. He said: “We’re at the start of October and all of a sudden I’m being called an expletive by my own fans. I must admit I didn’t expect that. I’ve had abuse before, but not as strong as that. “It’s all very well the fans blaming me at the end. We’ve lost, my fault. I take the blame, the buck stops at me. I’m not going to start bowing to what fans want.

Bigg, Kerr and Alfie Carter combined to set up Jack Reeves for a looping effort off the crossbar and Nick Bristow fired over from the rebound. Clarke fended off several challenges and crossed for Kerr to make it 3-0 before Saints fought back with two goals, the second from a dubious penalty. Clarke’s close-range effort was surprisingly disallowed for offside after Kerr beat three players and Bristow’s shot was parried.

A second-half brace by Hailsham substitute Ryan Cavalier dumped Horsham YMCA out of the Sussex RUR Cup, despite a belated fightback by the hosts. Division 2 Hailsham took an early lead when former Brighton and Hove Albion youngster Danny Leach flicked on for strike partner Shane Saunders to slot home. Just as YM looked to be grabbing a foothold in the game, they lost striker George Hillier (sickness), central defender Lloyd Graham (hamstring) and debutant Joe Ransom (dislocated knee) before half time. And it was the fresh legs of Cavalier that paid dividends as he extended the Stringers’ lead by punishing a tiring YM side. First he timed his run perfectly to meet Dean Stevens’ through ball and side foot past onrushing goalkeeper Simon Lockwood. Two minutes later he grabbed his second, flicking over Lockwood from close range. YM finally woke up and their only two shots on target produced goals by Liam Hunter (86) and Timmy Martin (89), but it was too late. YM manager Sammy Donnelly sighed: “The game meant everything. The cups are important to the club and supporters down here. “What we did in the last 10 minutes we should have done from the off. If we could have started the game like we ended it, it would have been fine.” YM followed up by losing 1-0 at Pagham in Division 1 on Tuesday. Local performance of the weekend came from Broadbridge Heath, who trounced rivals Forest 7-2 in the Division 3 Cup. Heath manager Steve Painter had challenged his side to convert more of their chances and the team responded with goals by Miles Hamilton (two), Michael Wood (two), Russell Mortimer, Martyn Flack and Alex Bowell. Heath will face league leaders Saltdean in the second round. TD Shipley put their league woes behind them to stall a six-game losing streak, picking up a much-needed 3-1 home win against Ferring. Sub Gary Pritchard lifted the spirits with a crucial brace, adding to Adam Hedger’s opener. There was no such joy for Roffey in the same competition. With only one win in eight in all competitions, they produced another poor show to lose 3-0 at Haywards Heath. Steyning are out of the Sussex Senior Cup and the RUR Cup after losing 4-2 at home to Westfield and 4-0 at Oakwood. Storrington consolidated fifth spot in Division 2 with a solid 2-0 home win against Oakwood. Liam Humphries and Daniel Measom scored in the first half before the Swans’ Richard Maymon saw red late on.

Ruz bros on target for Lions Matthew James & Matt Streeter Youth Football

Lower Beeding and Handcross Lions U15 clinched a well-deserved 5-3 win against Broadbridge Heath U15 in Division A of the Horsham and District League. It was a fantastic display of football from Lower Beeding right from the kick off as they started to pick holes in Heath’s defence. The home side were without two of their ‘star’ players, but Callum Nash and a super strike from Glenn Johnson put them 2-0 up before Heath hit back to level. Adam Ruz scored a great goal, dribbling past three players and slotting the ball between the goalkeeper’s legs, and twin brother Liam Ruz made it 4-2. Heath did not give up and scored on the break, but Nash’s great pass across the face of goal enabled Johnson to seal the points. It was a remarkable weekend for Johnson, who scored a hat-trick from full back for Horsham U15 (see Page 52). Joint players of the match for Lions were solid central defenders Sam Morey and Kyran Penny. Royal United U16 continued their excellent start to the season with a 6-1 win over Horsham Sparrows U16 in Division A. A brace each from Jake Legrange to by Clare and Turnbull Alex Parsons, plus one apiece from Anthony Jupp and Jacob Waller, did the trick for Royals despite a deserved consolation goal by ex-Royal Joseph Scallan.

Chesworth Rovers U12 maintained their 100 per cent record in Division C by winning 5-1 at East Grinstead Town U12. Chesworth Rovers U11 consolidated their position at the top of Division A with a fine 8-1 win against Ashurst Wood U11. The prolific Jack Frankland added three to his tally, Tim Bennett and Harry Bryant each scored twice and Henry Browning slotted in after a glorious through ball from Benjy Collins. While the goals continue to flow for Rovers, their defence and midfield are also playing a huge part in their early-season success. Forest U10 played fine passing football to win 6-0 and 4-0 in a double-header against Seagulls U10. Stan Ward (two, including a fine left-foot volley), Samuel Shoebridge,

Josh Dance, Richard Bailey and Luca Cocoracchio scored in the first match. Forest’s Samuel Smith made several saves. Harry Huddlestone (two), Jamie Atkins and Tom Colbran were on target in the second match. Callum Jones impressed in defence, while Jamie Buchanan and Matthew Dunningham worked hard in midfield. Roffey Robins Rockets U9

Albion chairman Tony Bloom has extended the contracts of manager Gus Poyet and assistant Mauricio Taricco until 2016. This is great move by a very shrewd man. Gus and Mauricio have totally changed how Albion play football. Okay, we have lost the last couple of games and that has been painful, particularly the Crystal Palace result, but what a change in our fortunes in less than two years. On the corresponding weekend two years ago we drew 2-2 at Yeovil in front of fewer than 4,500 spectators. That draw earned Albion their 10th point from 11 League 1 games. Now we have 17 points from 10 games and are only five points from the top of the Championship, despite a recent blip in form. With the contract extensions, Tony has told Gus he will have the time to build something very special here in Sussex. Already there are plans for a youth academy, helping Gus to nurture Albion’s future stars. This will help get them playing in a way that will enable them to move seamlessly into the first team, without the need for the club to always go out and buy expensive players. Now Gus can concentrate on getting the best out of the current crop of players, hopefully with the addition of one or two loan or permanent signings to fill the gaps we seem to have. Tony has also sent out a very loud message to any other chairman, here or abroad, that Gus and Mauricio are going nowhere. Steve McLaren resigned from Nottingham Forest at the weekend and I am sure other managers will lose their jobs before the month is out. At a time when things are coming together for Albion, we can’t afford to lose Gus. I think Tony has made sure this won’t happen – or at least won’t happen unless a huge amount of compensation is paid. I like to think (maybe dream) that what we are seeing now at Albion is what happened when Sir Alex Ferguson took charge at Manchester United. Foundations were put in place that saw United become a dominant force in English and world football, with a backbone of home-grown players. In five years, Albion probably won’t be world class. But I believe they will be a Premiership club with Gus (I hope) still at the helm and players who have come through our youth teams. Time will tell.

Vernon impresses at Brands Hatch Matthew James Sport Editor

Kieran Vernon completed his best weekend yet in the Porsche Carrera Cup, finishing fifth and sixth at sun-drenched Brands Hatch. The BRDC Rising Star from West Chiltington, who took over from 2010 champion Tim Harvey midway through this season, takes us through his latest promising performance. Qualifying It was important to avoid a puncture or damage that could lead to a puncture in the race, so it was a trade-off between outright speed and looking after the tyres. The incredibly close nature of this year’s championship meant we sat eighth for both races. A tenth of a second or so would have put us in the top five. Frustrating, but that’s racing. Race one I didn’t make the best of starts, something I am keen to get right as soon as possible. But losing the place only made my race a little more interesting, charging through the pack from ninth. Ben Hetherington put coolant down on the circuit as he retired with a burst radiator, which made things very interesting when we all came round on lap two. It all kicked off as the pack entered Surtees. Having received the hit that forced the coolant on the circuit, I should have known better, but in the heat of battle I went wide. Luckily I didn’t lose a position. I out-dragged Jonas Gelzinis down the back straight towards Hawthorns and found myself in a position to take Sam Tordoff at the same time. I took the chance and it stuck. Hawthorns bend is incredibly fast and not usually somewhere I would choose to overtake.

Up to seventh, chasing Richard Plant and championship contender Michael Meadows closely. Euan Hankey made a mistake into Druids and retired stuck in the gravel, another place gained. I pressured Plant for the whole race before he went wide at Paddock Hill and he punctured a tyre as I moved up to fifth. I was catching Meadows on the final lap and took the chequered flag right on his tail. Fifth place, the best result so far. Charging through from ninth was really enjoyable, not only for me but hopefully for everybody watching. Race two Although I did lose a place again at the start, it wasn’t that bad. I think I got a bit excited and just released the clutch a bit early, but I’m definitely getting the idea. A huge battle was going on in front involving Hankey, Meadows and Gelzinis. This bunched up the field and allowed me to switch back Ben on the way out of Stirlings.

A retirement by Nationwide/ Motorbase team-mate Nick Tandy (puncture) put us up to seventh. We were charging hard with great pace, really putting 2007 champion and title contender James Sutton under pressure. Annoyingly James was very good at fending off my attacks, but we both took advantage of a mistake by Gelzinis at Clearways. It all got very close on the final lap when traffic mixed it up a bit. It caught me slightly at the wrong time, but round the last half of the lap I was on Sutton’s case.

Coming across the line in sixth was another great result, mixing it with title contenders and past champions in only my fifth race meeting in the series. Overall view I would like to thank everybody who is involved for me to be driving in the car. It was incredibly hot inside – could maybe use an air freshener! I’m very proud to be driving for such a great team of people. When I got in the Porsche for the first time it was so different to what I’d been driving. Tim Harvey says I’ve exceeded his expectations and the team’s expectations, especially with the championship being so competitive. Now I’m concentrating on having a really good Silverstone (October 15-16) and it’s going to be very close there because it’s such a short track. Then we’ll look at what we can do next year.

Horsham opened their league campaign with a hard-fought 2-2 draw at home to Worthing. Dominating the first half in the heat, Horsham finally took the lead when John Burroughs scored from close range just before the interval. Continued pressure in the second half paid off when slick passing in the D enabled Duncan Howarth to double the score. But a breakaway foray left Horsham open in defence to allow Worthing a soft goal. Despite repeated attacks, Horsham were unable to find the net again and Worthing levelled from a short

corner. Horsham coach Sam Naismith said: “As a first league outing for our young squad (four U18s), we are happy to earn a point. Better will follow as the team become more accustomed to playing together.” Men’s club captain Ian Brown is in the England Over-40s squad for the Masters World Cup in Singapore. Horsham Ladies failed to convert promising attacks and lost 3-1 to Old Loughtonians at Broadbridge Heath, despite Lauren Keefe’s first-half equaliser. The win was a tribute to perseverance and effort and a just reward for playing with such self-belief and composure.” Horsham Girls U12 put in a great performance to beat Surbiton Robins Girls U12 in the Home Counties League. Egor Zotov, 10, has captured his first title – the Junior Summer Masters at Cottesmore Golf Club. After twice finishing second behind impressive nine-year-old Josh Dance, Egor won his first ‘major’ golf title with a confident performance. Egor is a popular figure at Cottesmore, where he roams all hours of the day, practising every moment he is allowed. A keen member of the Junior Academy at Cottesmore, Egor has been knocking at the door for some time and won a Champion of the Future Award at the end of last season. Now that he has lived up to this, he has more titles in his sights. Calum Callan, Egor’s coach and

director of golf at Cottesmore, said: “Egor’s passion to succeed is obvious. If that passion is controlled and continues to ooze, we will see great things from this young man.” Winners were Louie Derham (U15), Ryan Reagan (U13), Egor Zotov (U11), Josh Dance (U9), Luke Harris (U7) and Jordan Leaver (girls). A team of ladies from Cottesmore are through to the final of the Morrice Foursomes Matchplay, to be played at Singing Hills on Tuesday. The event is organised annually by the Sussex County Ladies Golf Association (SLGA). The team beat Worthing, Littlehampton and Singing Hills before a tough quarter-final against Bognor, in which the pairing of Linda Adamson and Irene Matheson held their

nerve on the 20th hole. They won their semi-final against Sweetwoods at The Dyke before the final was postponed due to bad weather. Adamson, Matheson, Annette Walsh, Val Daniels, Iona McKean, and Ann Morgan will play Willingdon in the final. Heather Tomsett won the club’s Summer Knockout Cup, with Matheson as runner-up. Margaret Mitchell took the Summer Plate, ahead of Margaret Swatman. Ladies who played in the Seve Ballesteros national competition in July will appear in the final at The Shire Golf Club, London, on October 19. McKean and Mitchell are unavailable, so Cottesmore will be represented by Julie Hill, Penny Gaunt, Daria Blaze, Pat Johns and Swatman.

Sport in Brief Youth Cricket Horsham Trinity’s colts section celebrated another fine season at their annual presentation day. Notable successes in 2011 came from the U13s, who won the Sussex Junior Cricket Festival, and the U15s, who won both the North Mid Sussex Championship and the IDentilam League. A club spokesman said: “The club very much supports an inclusive team-building approach to coaching and the running of all its sides. Monty Panesar has signed an extension to his contract with Sussex, keeping him at the PROBIZ County Ground until at least 2015. He said: “The club is going through an exciting period and I’m looking forward to helping them challenge for trophies. “I aim to repay their faith by continuing my good form in all formats of the game while also improving my chances of reclaiming my place in the England side.” Sussex cricket manager Mark Robinson said: “Monty is one of the best finger spinners in the world and we know how lucky we are to have him here at Hove.”

Horsham lost 95-57 at Southwater before winning a thriller against Henfield 76-74. Captain Mike Power said after the Southwater encounter: “It was a lovely afternoon for bowls, but we were well beaten on the day. The team Southwater put out was just too strong for us.” The top rink of David Richardson, Dave Marden and John Hitch, skipped by Dennis Tribe, made the difference against Henfield with a seven-shot advantage, 26-19. Tribe said: “My lads played very well and it was a pleasing win to finish off the outdoor bowling season.”

Rugby Union Horsham conceded a late try and lost 13-10 at Uckfield, their first defeat in four league matches this season. They will face Sheppey at home tomorrow (Saturday).
