Friends and relatives were this week trying to come to terms with teenager Toby Woolford’s death in a road crash. Mr Woolford’s Vauxhall Corsa collided with an HGV lorry on the A27 at Arundel, shortly after 7am on Thursday last week. The 19-year-old was released by firefighters and received immediate medical treatment but died at the scene, between Arundel railway station and Crossbush. He was the best friend and near neighbour of Horsham Football Club player Adam Hutchings, who he had known since childhood. Mr Hutchings, who described his friend as the funniest person he had met, played for the Hornets two days after the tragedy and set up a goal in a win at Hornchurch. Horsham manager Justin Luchford told The Resident: “I left it up to Adam whether or not to play on Saturday. He’s a levelheaded lad with a lot of character and he wanted to be part of the squad. “He looked me in the eye and told me he was okay to play. He said he wanted to do his best for himself and for his mate, then he got on the pitch and created the second goal for us. “It’s a sad time, but I think in a way having two games of football in three days may have helped him, taking his mind away from it a little bit. “Toby would have known how much Adam loved his football.” Mr Woolford’s family, of Andrews Road, Southwater, said: “We hope that everyone

will respect our need for privacy during this very difficult time. We have a close group of very supportive friends and family that will help us through this tragic period in our lives. “Toby was much loved by everyone that knew him. He was a loving son, brother, boyfriend and a loyal friend. He will be missed more than words can say. He will always be remembered for his smile, his kindness and above all his ability to make you laugh. “Toby had just started a new chapter in his life. He had just started a new apprenticeship and was excited by the new challenges that lay ahead of him. “He will leave us with many wonderful memories and filled our lives with laughter and joy. His tragic passing will leave an enormous hole in our hearts, but also with a smile knowing that Toby loved life and lived it to the full.”

Mr Woolford attended Tanbridge House School, whose spokesman Sally Linsell said the school offered its condolences to his family and friends. Alexandria Dyer, who later taught him Maths at Central Sussex College, Crawley, said: “I would like to send my sincere condolences to the Woolford family. “He always stood out for being a pleasant and respectful student, not only to me but within his peer group. It is true he did

May he rest in peace and God be with the family.” A spokesman for the college added: “Toby was a well-liked student who worked hard during his two-year electrical course at Central Sussex College, which resulted in him achieving his City and Guilds Level 2 Certificate in Electrotechnology this Summer. “We know Toby had recently found employment with an electrical company as an apprentice electrician and believe he would have been a real asset to them.” Mr Woolford worked at Sainsbury’s, Horsham, and his girlfriend, Molly Keeling, attended Millais School and Collyer’s. Developers ask for views on benefits of homes plan Public exhibition to highlight scheme for 550 houses Matthew James News Editor

matthew@the-resident.co.uk

Developers will explain their controversial plans for up to 550 homes at a public exhibition this month. Devine Homes, Bellway Homes and Reside Developments have submitted an outline planning application to Horsham District Council for the eastern expansion of Billingshurst. The plans include a bypass/link road from the A29 Stane Street/ High Street roundabout to the A272, land to accommodate a new primary school, and land to accommodate either a new doctors’ surgery or an expansion to the existing surgery, dentists’ surgery and crèche. The consortium says it is working with the council to formulate a retail study of Billingshurst High Street and Jengers Mead, funded by the developers. If planning permission is granted, the first homes could be available to buy in the Spring of 2013. The developers say in a statement to The Resident: “Community consultation has been very important in formulating the plans. “It is the consortium’s intention to continue to engage with the community to ensure the package

of benefits is targeted at what the community has asked for, such as improvements to Jengers Mead and a proposed youth facility project in Billingshurst. “In addition to the benefits that can be secured through the Section 106 planning agreement mechanism, there is the opportunity to secure further investment for the local community through the New Homes Bonus.

“To this end, the consortium will hold a public exhibition on Friday, September 16, at the Village Hall and will continue with other focused consultation. “In both instances, the consortium will seek the community’s views on what and where funding packages should be targeted.” Consortium spokesman Andrew Munton, regional planning director for Bellway Homes, said: “We are grateful to the residents who attended the public

Not enough water so boat festival leaves the district

News in Brief Hunting charges Four people facing hunting charges will appear in court on September 29. Henry James Hawksfield, 58, of Bines Road, Partridge Green, Rachel Holdsworth, of Rock Road, Washington, Neil Millard, 44, of Dragons Lane, Shipley, and Andrew Phillis, 50, of Totnes, Devon, faced four charges at Crawley Magistrates’ Court on Thursday last week. They are alleged to have breached Section 1 of the Hunting Act 2004 at meets of the Crawley and Horsham Hunt – in Southwater on January 18, in Shermanbury on January 25 and in Twineham and Shermanbury on February 15.

Murder case adjourned The Dragon Boat Festival at Knepp Castle last year Photos by Chris Woolgar

A Dragon Boat Festival is being moved from Knepp Castle, Shipley, because there is not enough water there. Instead it will be held outside Horsham district – at Brooklands Park, Western Road, Worthing, on Sunday (10am-4pm). Claire Irving, fundraising manager for St Catherine’s Hospice, said: “We were due to hold our Dragon Boat Festival, as last year, in the beautiful setting of Knepp Castle. “However, in spite of recent heavy showers, the consistent lack of rainfall over the last 10 weeks has seen

the water levels on the lake drop to such an extent that it is just not possible to hold a boat race there.

Our Dragon Boat ‘Festival has found a

new home for this year

“Dragon Boats is a key event in our calendar and the local people who support the day are very important to us. “We love dragon boats and are aware just how much work our teams

have done to raise money and prepare for the day. “We are delighted to announce that our Dragon Boat Festival has found a new home for this year at Brooklands Park and would like to thank all at St Barnabas House hospice in Worthing for their help with this. “Their support ensures that this event will be an excellent fundraiser for much-needed hospice care across Sussex, and we hope that regular supporters will look to join us in Worthing for the day. “We would also like to thank Adur District Council and Worthing

Borough Council for enabling us to hold the event, along with our sponsors Thomas Eggar LLP, Edwards Vacuum and Barclays and all of our teams for their continued support.” Organisers say visitors can expect “a fantastic array of stalls and entertainment” as they watch businesses from across Crawley, Horsham, Mid Sussex and East Surrey do battle on the lake. For more information about the venue, visit www.stch.org.uk and follow the Dragon Boat Festival link or phone the charity’s fundraising team on 01293 447357/365.

A man appeared in court, charged with murdering his wife. William Thomas Allen, 66, is accused of murdering Linda Allen, 64, at their rented home in Nyetimber Lane, West Chiltington, on June 9. He appeared at Lewes Crown Court on Friday last week and was remanded in custody until October 21, when he is due to enter a plea.

Co-op raided Burglars forced open doors and took cigarettes from the Co-op, Fitzalan Road, Horsham, on Sunday night. Contact Sussex Police on 0845 607099, quoting serial 254 of August 29.

Amputee ready for 180-mile trek A Broadbridge Heath man who lost a leg in an accident is gearing up to cycle from London to Paris. Damian MacDonald’s left leg was amputated in the Eighties after a road accident when he lived in South Africa. In October last year he climbed Mount Kilimanjaro to raise thousands of pounds for LimbPower, a charity dedicated to the rehabilitation of amputees through sport and the arts. And on September 30 he will start a three-day trek from Bexley Heath, joining nine other amputees and 10 able-bodied cyclists on a 180-mile journey to the Eiffel Tower. Mr MacDonald, 42, told The Resident: “The physical demands of this challenge compared with the Kili trek are very different. “As a below-knee amputee I use between nine per cent and 20 per cent more oxygen than a non-amputee, depending on terrain and gradient.

“A number of my team-mates are above-knee amputees and they require between 45 per cent and 70 per cent more oxygen than a nonamputee. “Cycling up Ditchling Beacon or Bedham Hill without your chest exploding is tough, whoever you are. Doing it with one leg and those increased oxygen requirements and it’s no wonder I’m more than a little out of breath.

I will be passing another ‘milestone on my journey of rediscovering my ability

“To prepare for this challenge, I became a member of our local cycling club, Horsham Cycling, which has been very helpful in giving advice and

support. “I cycle with the club most Sundays and have also participated in a number of 60-mile-plus cycling events to get used to the miles in the saddle. “Many of my friends and family can’t believe I actually want to sit on a tiny little saddle for three days straight, but I’m really looking forward to it. “I will be passing another milestone on my journey of rediscovering my ability and I will be doing it for a very worthy cause.” Mr MacDonald said a young lady called Victoria, who lost her leg in a car accident 18 months ago, spoke to him at the Amputee Games last month. She told him: “I’ve been hiding in my house, worrying about what I’ll be able to do and what people think, then I’ve come here and taken part in fencing, weightlifting and sitting volleyball. “I’ve even won medals in the swimming competition. It’s been absolutely awesome! Thanks to LimbPower.” For more information about the charity, visit www.limbpower.com

So we’ve got some tough times ahead, with the budget cuts likely to mean a reduction in services across town. But it could be worse - you could be a long way from

home, half way up the highest mountain in Africa, exhausted, thinking ‘how am I going to make it to the top with one leg?’ Somehow, Damian MacDonald of Broadbridge Heath did

find the strength to carry on, reaching the summit at 5,895 metres on 21st October. Damian was one of six amputees to embark on the intrepid journey to raise funds for Limbpower. However, the

41-year-old was the only one of the group who made it to the top. So far he has raised £3,762 for the charity. Read more about Damian’s adventures inside today’s edition, on Page 9.

Best results in school’s history

News in Brief

Pupils from The Weald School, Billingshurst, are celebrating the best results in the school’s 55year history. Eighty-eight per cent achieved five or more GCSEs at grade A*-C and 68 per cent recorded five or more at A*-C including English and Maths. Head teacher Peter Woodman said: “We are really pleased to see that the hard work of students, staff and parents has paid off. “It is fantastic to achieve our bestever results, but even more satisfying to see the looks on students’ faces as they opened up their results. Achievement across the whole ability range has been fantastic.” Dan Pettitt achieved 11 A*s, Chris Khoo 10 A*s and one A, and Alex

More 40 to 44-year-olds are being injured on scooters or small motorbikes in Sussex, latest figures show. The Sussex Safer Roads Partnership says the biggest increase in injuries occurred in people of that age who rode machines between 50cc and 125cc. This was closely followed by 25 to 29-year-olds on the same size machines. Sgt Carl Knapp, of Sussex Police’s roads policing unit, said: “Many people think of injuries sustained by riders of smaller motorcycles and scooters as something predominantly experienced by younger people. “However, the partnership’s latest research shows that serious injuries are becoming increasingly common among those in older age groups. “Before anyone takes to the road on a smaller motorcycle or scooter for the first time, they need to undertake at least compulsory basic training, which is designed to be one link in the chain of learning. “However, I would strongly recommend that further training is undertaken.” For more information, visit www. bikesafe.co.uk

Davidson nine A*s and two As. Impressive GCSE results are also being celebrated by pupils at Christ’s Hospital School, where 70 per cent of entries were A* or A grades. Ninety-one per cent of entries were A*, A or B and results in the more rigorous IGCSE exams, which take in Geography, Maths and ICT, were very strong. Eighteen pupils obtained all A* or A grades, with Francis Scarr (Wisborough Green) and Alice Greenwood (King’s Cross) achieving a clean sweep of 12 A*s. Francis said: “The hard work’s not all over yet! The next step is to achieve a good set of A-level results for university entry, where I would like to read Modern Languages or Classics.” Happy pupils at The Weald School, Billingshurst

Christ’s Hospital head John Franklin was pleased with the results, which followed the school’s best Alevel results for 20 years. Thatcher’s monsters

Cameron’s rant

I was disturbed by the aggressive responses of readers Robert Worley and Allan Palmer to Katie Arthur’s erudite article on the London riots. Katie’s earnest but admittedly naive response was largely about politics and contemporary culture, something which both readers referred to above are apparently ignorant. Mr Palmer cites the permissive society of the 1960s as the cause of all our woes. He eulogises the virtues of the three Rs and National Service and blames a liberal teaching profession for the crisis in our culture. His fantasy of a golden past is laughable. National Service was not well liked and was the product of a society fearful of impending global warfare. In the era of the three Rs, literacy levels were worse than they are now, and learning by rote never ever contributed to good behaviour. Perhaps Mr Palmer could write that last sentence 100 times to learn his lesson. And finally we have Mr Palmer’s outrageous and prejudicial view that the teaching profession is driven on by left-wing unions intent on social engineering rather than education. This is scandalous. As a teacher, I am often forced to enact social engineering programmes on behalf of governments that Mr Palmer has no doubt help elect. Mrs Thatcher, as Katie Arthur rightly notes, initiated a brutalising and socially destructive economic programme in this country. The Britain we now live in is very much her creation and not the creation of liberal Sixties values. The rioters are Thatcher’s monsters – and, like Frankenstein, they are turning on their maker.

Several members of my family live in London and I was concerned for their welfare during the riots. I was not reassured when millionaire and failed Prime Minister Cameron jetted back to “deal with” the situation. He thought the answer to a riot was a rant. Any drunken Daily Mail reader could have ranted as effectively as David. One of the soundbites he thought would play well was to authorise the use of plastic bullets (not used – News Editor). There are only a couple of problems with that. Police target practice on a black citizen lit the blue touchpaper in Tottenham. Was that such a good idea? Did it help the police to work with the community? Plastic bullets in Northern Ireland resulted in 13 deaths, including those of seven children, and scores of serious, permanent injuries and disabilities. Is this all part of Cameron’s Big Society? Previous government initiatives suggest that the plastic bullets for rioters today will be turned on peaceful protesters tomorrow. The laws supposedly addressing terrorism have been used against peaceful protesters on many occasions. It does seem nonsensical to blame the riots on anarchists. Anarchists have never had a strong following in the UK and, frankly, most of them would be a bit too old to engage in rioting. Now who was it who said “there is no such thing as society” and implied it was every man for himself? Why, Margaret Thatcher. Perhaps Thatcher’s children were just taking the blessed Margaret a little too literally.

COLOUR ENHANCEMENT Beware of buying precious stones on the internet. A large percentage of stones are colour enhanced so when you have them mounted they could turn transparent. These stones will often be described as natural, true, however you must always ask are they colour enhanced. I once resized a ring with a Blue Diamond, to my horror the colour disappeared.

Hospital experience

A rail-ly good read

The acute medical unit at the East Surrey Hospital, Redhill, is quite a place. Most patients pretty ill, plus one or two nutters to make it interesting. One hit a nurse, another kept shouting at the staff. Then a Downs Syndrome adult was admitted and kept tearing off his oxygen mask and hurling it on the floor. Later a man arrived with a black eye and cuts all over his face. He promptly had an epileptic fit – frightening – and, when he came to, disconnected his lifelines to go out for a smoke. He later insisted on discharging himself, although he was awaiting a brain scan. I was wired up and forbidden to get out of bed. No TV (or computer, of course), only Radio Surrey and TalkSport, no papers brought round and nobody to communicate with. Mobile phone signal very poor and kept cutting off. A long four days. Better on Chaldon Ward, with three compos mentis neighbours, but in the corner was an attention-seeker who called out all through the night. And opposite was a dear old chap who’d lost the plot and kept saying he must go because it was his son’s wedding. He was brought back from the car park a couple of times and would get out of bed at 4am to pack and dress, but at least he was quiet. What with blood pressure taking at 6am, tea at 6.30, breakfast at 7 and hoovering at 8, with beds being crashed into, I’m Christmas crackered.

As an old railwayman and longtime resident of Horsham, I really enjoyed Sam Allsop’s article on Horsham station (The Resident, August 19). I came to Horsham in 1972 as a newly married young man (we celebrate our 40th next year) and proudly took up my first senior management position as area civil engineer, Horsham, based in Nightingale Goods Yard. I was responsible for the Southern Region lines from West Croydon through Leatherhead to Horsham, Three Bridges to Horsham, and Horsham to Bognor Regis and Emsworth. I remember being told at the time that the Crawley Road bridge (referred to by Sam) had been hit by a train in the previous year, 1971. Contrary to Sam’s report, the train involved was not a passenger train but an engineer’s material train, on a relaying job in the station, and it demolished one of the bridge piers. Military trestling was rushed to the site and erected to replace that pier. It was good stuff and still remains faithfully in position to this day. Referring to Sam’s account of the train colliding with the wall, I think this incident was much later, in the late 1970s or even the early 1980s. I had become assistant divisional engineer at Croydon and my staff had to organise the repairs. The incident occurred just at the start of the evening rush hour when an empty passenger train in the sidings, running behind the old telephone exchange in North Street, ran past a shunt signal at red. The trap points directed it into the parapet wall of North Street subway, thus protecting the occupied station Platform 1 line. At the subsequent HMRI public inquiry, BR was criticised for locating the protecting trap points at a location which would direct a derailing train into such a solid obstruction. The points have now been moved back and the siding shortened. I remember the poor young driver from Norwood Junction was killed instantly and had to be cut out of a cab full of brickwork debris. I found it interesting to learn that the Railway Hotel in Brighton Road had been built in 1834 in obvious anticipation of the town getting its new-fangled railway. This expectation was also voiced in Howard Dudley’s little treatise, History and Antiquities of Horsham, published in 1836 (and later reproduced by Jury Cramp Ltd, of West Street, in the 1970s I believe). Dudley, 16, looked forward to the arrival of the “great London and Brighton rail road”, which was intended to pass through the town. Only it never did. At least not the main line, but only a branch line from Three Bridges. The Three Bridges to Horsham line was still referred to as “the Branch” in the signal box diagram in 1972 and probably later. It was only in 1868 that Horsham got its own main line when the

This line was still being referred to as the Arundel Main Line in the signal box diagrams when I arrived in 1972. Seb inspires school’s Paralympic Day plan

Celebrating a new heavenly mosaic New artwork at St John’s Church, Broadbridge Heath, features a mosaic of multi-coloured glass. The collaboration between local artist Peter Ward and engineer Bob Silver is part of a farewell to departing vicar Ewen Souter. He said: “I hope this artwork will inspire those who see it as they pass,

whether they live in the village or pass through on the bus or in their cars, to think of the joy that Christ can bring to life through his redeeming love.” Horsham Sheet Metal, Opus Stained Glass from Poynings and Gatwick Sealed Units of Charlwood worked on the display.

A visit from Seb Coe has helped inspire a Horsham school to arrange a Paralympic Day in the build-up to the 2012 Games. The double Olympic gold medallist, chairman of the London Organising Committee, visited Tanbridge House School in May to mark the involvement of West Sussex schools in the London 2012 education programme. A school spokesman told The Resident yesterday (Thursday): “This event inspired and motivated our staff and students so much that we decided to expand on it in the new academic year. “To continue the momentum created, we will be hosting a Paralympic Day at Tanbridge House School on September 23. “The aim is to raise awareness of the Paralympic Games and disability sport in general, as well as to promote the Paralympic values, raise the profile of Paralympians and demonstrate links across all subjects with the Paralympics and the Olympics. “Tanbridge is also aiming to use the event to build links with specific Paralympians, with the aim to be able to offer some funding to help athletes

who are hoping to take part in the 2012 Games. “Paralympic and Olympic athletes will be at Tanbridge on the day, running sessions with Tanbridge students and students from local primary schools. Emma Wiggs, British sitting volleyball hopeful for 2012, will return after attending the Olympic Day in May and Enable Me will be

back to run more wheelchair sport sessions. “All Key Stage 3 lessons will have a Paralympic focus and there will be a range of break-time activities for students and staff to take part in.” For more information about the event, including sponsorship opportunities, email Sally Linsell at slinsell@ths.uk.net

Local History

Where Beeching beat the brickworks Sam Allsop History

Having passed Horsham and Christ’s Hospital, we head on this week to Southwater. Now famed for its water sports facilities, very different reasons attracted rail traffic to Southwater in the late 18th and early 19th centuries.

As many will know already, Southwater was a notable brickworks in its day. With the chimneys visible when approaching from the south, the brickworks dominated Southwater’s landscape and its rail access. With a station building, small ticket office, waiting room on the up side and another waiting shelter on the down, the station relied greatly on brick traffic and London commuters

passing through Horsham. But with relatively few residents in comparison to the present, the brickworks were all the more crucial to the station’s survival. Smith of Worthing, a man who already owned several brickfields, worked alongside Mill of Horsham, a local builder, to revolutionise Southwater. The only brickworks of comparable size could be found at Beeding,

The since-demolished Southwater station. From Branch Lines to Horsham, by Vic Mitchell and Keith Smith (Middleton Press, 1982)

further down the line. With Bramber just under half an hour away and the coast not much further, bricks could be taken to Worthing with relative ease along the track. In fact, Southwater bricks weren’t just transported along the Steyning Line but used along it too. This was because they were pleasing on the eye but also hard in nature and therefore durable. With so much freight traffic, drivers had to know the line very well. The danger of uncoupling was greater with freight than passenger carriages, so the guard and driver would have to be aware of changes in gradient. Even with extreme care taken, incidents did occur on the line. The most notable of these was the fatal crash at Itchingfield Junction when two freight trains collided in 1964. Perhaps worryingly in today’s age of health and safety, precautions were often ignored around Southwater, with freight train drivers rumoured to regularly visit nearby Copsale’s Bridge House pub to get ‘refreshments’. It goes without saying that this practice was strictly unofficial. Industrial action was to have a profound effect on the future of Southwater station, just as it had done at Horsham. The 1926 general strike that threatened Baldwin’s government saw the use of road vehicles over trains to transport bricks. Roads held the advantage in that

they led directly to the brickworks, avoiding the damage to bricks that shunting could create on the tracks. The station struggled to attract passengers. Just 10 minutes up the Steyning line, the market town of Horsham was favoured for trade and the idea of a half-mile walk into Southwater from the station was unappealing to some shoppers. Such was the lack of attention Southwater received that the station lacked any footbridge or subway. The goods yard alone was dwarfed by most others down the line. The combination of low (even if loyal) passenger numbers and the decrease in vital brick traffic meant that from the late 1950s the station box that had stood at Southwater since 1874 had little to do.

Some believe ‘Southwater station

would have thrived today

In the end, the station was a strong contender for the Beeching Axe and it finally closed in 1966. But some believe Southwater station would have thrived today if rail services had not been cut back so dramatically in the 1960s. A degree of brick traffic would have existed, as 80 or 90 men were still employed at the brickworks in 1974 and it only closed in 1982. After World War II, Southwater peaked in producing 300,000 bricks a week and 18 million bricks a year, potentially providing enough traffic. More importantly, the population of Southwater doubled between approximately the early 1980s and 2000. Nevertheless, a rail station today would have to compete with a regular bus service (four every hour, for now at least) between Horsham and Southwater, among others. Very little remains of the old station. Horsham District Council bought the station premises from West Sussex County Council for about £1.3 million, citing the need for police and library facilities. The Downs Link passes where the Steyning Line once lay and rare butterflies have been known to dwell between the old West Grinstead and Southwater stations. Along here, a replica sign like that owned by the old station has been erected to remind passers-by of the station’s local importance. Since the station’s closure, the Worthing Road has been realigned but Station Road still retains glimpses of the past. The terraced houses that line the road were built in the early 19th Century, specifically for labourers at the brickworks. The name of Station Road is a good example of just how closely linked Southwater’s bricks and its station were.

A Horsham haulage business has completed a 114-mile journey by steam locomotives, raising around £6,000 for charity.

Les Searle Plant Hire and Sales is a heavy haulage business that specialises in the transportation of demolition equipment across the country. They organised the trip, which involved three ‘road trains’, a trailer and a team of 15 staff members, friends and family. The route took the group from Horsham to a steam

fair in Dorset over the bank holiday weekend. Managing Director, Les Searle, said: “We had a fantastic time. We set off on Friday and the trip took a total of 22 hours on the road. We were really considerate of other road users. It’s thanks to the entire team and everyone involved that it was such as success.”

Money raised will go to the Teenage Cancer Trust, which raises funds for, educates and supports teenagers fighting cancer. Les and the team chose it after a friend lost his 14 yearold son to the disease. Les added: “When our friend’s son died, we were asked to lead the

Offload your back office chores Home-based businesses form a key sector of the economy now, as remote working utilising today’s armoury of new media and communications increasingly renders the office obsolete. In Horsham, serving this battalion of busy home-workers with vital remote support is a business also based from home – and demand for its services is growing. Offload Business Resources targets home-based companies that cannot afford to employ help but who need it nonetheless. “I’m here to support the micro business,” says founder Susannah Brady, “and run a

totally functional office from home – from PCs and printers to binding machines, trimmers and copiers – so that I can fully support the client.” Susannah began just over a year ago and demand has grown so much that, true to her own business model, she is offloading some of her own workload as client commitments blossom. “Work is coming out of my ears”, she said. “To handle everything, I’m sub-contracting some tasks to a team of five home-based women, although everything flows through me first and before anything is returned to the client.” Her remote workers are all independent. Typically mothers, professionally trained in secretarial and admin skills. “There’s a mums’ army of such women who cannot get the type of job they need to fit around their kids”, Susannah added. “Working from home for a business like mine is one way that they can conveniently earn money doing what they are qualified for”. Like them, Susannah has children at home and is an experienced secretary, who for many years held a fulltime office job as the PA to the boss of a Gatwick-based company. “We ended up being based at different airport offices and so I worked remotely from him but as he was out with clients for much of the time, it didn’t really matter where I physically worked. “He was out with clients for much of the time, so in a sense I was already working remotely for him. To save

costs and traveI time, I suggested that I be based from home. He agreed and the system worked really well for several years.” She also supported her then husband’s plumbing business, handling all the back office functions, including banking and VAT returns. Susannah took the leap into selfemployment but only after completing plenty of research and speaking to business advisors about her proposal.

here to support ‘theI’mmicro business ’

Networking is key to her success, she believes. “Business didn’t come overnight, it takes a while but it’s all about meeting people and building relationships. Now, I’ve built up a solid, regular client base. Their requirements are diverse, from helping them through the company registration process to preparing legal documents. Susannah said: “One wanted a mileage schedule preparing to help him reclaim tax, so sent me his diary to calculate how far he’d travelled over the year. I Googled to find his journey distances then transferred everything to a spreadsheet. “I’ve also been tasked with conducting research work for training courses and internet searches to compile a target distribution list. The variety of work is endless.” She categorises clients into “them

that can and them that can’t”. “Some are happy on their own and can handle the back office function but simply do not have time to do it and want that extra pair of hands”. Her own need to minimise and control overheads has sparked further development in the scope of Susannah’s business. She plans to hire out business resources such as flip charts to keep clients’ running costs low, as well as introducing a phone answering service. “I’ve hooked up with a third party provider so although it won’t be me answering in person, they will take calls under my name. “When processing client work, I always look and ask `what would doing that mean for me`. When you run your own business, you view others who do so in a different way from say a large service provider, whose employees are salaried. “I have direct experience of the kinds of challenges my clients face in running a business, so if someone wants a sales letter formulating, I know that I can help because I’ve generated them for my own marketing.” Her fee structure is simple and transparent, she adds. “I charge for my time and I itemise everything and the time taken so that clients see exactly what I’ve done. “I’m happy to offer a flexible arrangement, either payment per project or on a budget plan reviewable at any time.” Soon it seems, Susannah will be able to handle virtually any client requirement, literally.

Brewery’s limited edition anniversary beer is a Ten Hepworth and Company has launched a special limited edition beer to mark its tenth anniversary. The award-winning producer of fine ales has made 3652 bottles of the drink, named ‘Ten’, and each is numbered sequentially, marking the date of production. Owner, Andy Hepworth, said: “The one-off ale is a brewer’s delight. It represents the ultimate in the brewer’s craft and is a very fine, pale ale. It is highly collectable. “It’s fantastic for us to be able to do this. We’ve created a splendid business and the skills and knowledge that all our team have contributed deserve recognition. ’10’ is a Horsham success. It is the equivalent of a champagne!” The ale is brewed with Sussex-grown barley and will be launched at Horsham’s Big Nibble event. There will be some available on draught in the Carfax during the two-day festival. It will also be on sale from the brewery and Beer Essentials in East Street, Horsham. Glee continues to captivate Horsham park turns Forget the jocks and cheerleaders, the Gleeks is the only gang Rachael Pratt wants to join after a performance of Simply More Glee Rachael Pratt

Review

Simply More Glee, The Capitol

With hands clapping, people dancing in their seats and smiles filling the audience as well as the stage, it’s safe to say that the progression from ‘Simply Glee’ (September 2010) to ‘Simply More Glee’ has been a total success. Featuring a wide range of tracks from the second series of the musicbased comedy/drama that has dominated music charts, it’s guaranteed at least one will suit your individual taste. From ballads to rock, rap to musicals, the show is absolutely captivating. The actors themselves bring a friendly atmosphere to the stage, so friendly that immediately, you know you’re part of their gang; if you’re not a Gleek, prepare to be converted. The outfits alone will have your jaw hitting the floor from startling sequins to nothing but a pair of standard yellow boxers.

Watching actors with great passion perform with ease through warmhearted winks and loving smiles is something that lifts the entire production. Clare Cordell is able to wow the theatre with a voice as loud and vibrant as her hair, reaching unimaginable highs with her pleasingly powerful vocals. In addition, Clare’s fellow actor and co-producer of the show Becky Hunt could be heading straight for the West End with her clear-cut, distinct voice that is, literally, sweet music to your ears. Not forgetting the boys, Tobias Ratcliffe executes absolute precision in his singing, even in a whirlwind of notes, hitting every one effortlessly. The cast as a whole and individually, cannot be faulted. Of course, it wouldn’t be a song and dance performance without the dance. The show achieves exceptional choreography, which never stays the same, mixing ballet moves with street. It’s professional, sleek and in true Glee style, fun. The choreography is something to be proud of for Warnett, Tappenden and the rest of

the team. Expect an exciting performance of ‘Living on a Prayer’, ‘Forget You’ and many more songs from an array of artists. Slush puppies, teen-love, with a dash of Sue Sylvester and Dalton Academy Warblers make this familyfun feature all that much better. Angel Productions will do what they’ve intended: ‘you wanna be a loser like me’ is a lyric I will never forget – my L sign’s on my forehead with appreciation and awe. Before you know it, there won’t be a person in the world without their L’s in the air.

live and deadly

Nobody panic! It’s not the ducks, just children’s telly star Steve Backshall, with some of his favourite not-so-cuddly creatures CBBC’s adventurer and nature expert Steve Backshall and children’s TV favourite Naomi Wilkinson are coming to Horsham and they’re bringing some deadly animals along with them. How thoughtful. Steve, who presents the channel’s Live ‘n’ Deadly programme and his co-star will be in Horsham Park for a special ‘Deadly Day Out’ on Sunday, September 11 giving their young fans the chance to meet and greet some British wildlife. The live show coincides with a new series of the TV programme, which sees Steve gallivanting across the globe in search of deadly creatures and educating his young audience. The live show will re-create much of what young viewers get to see on the TV show, and will also include challenges, audience participation, dares and adventure. Plus you can count on the usual educational insight into some of the deadliest and

most enigmatic small animals. The event is free to attend but tickets must be applied for by going to www.bbc.co.uk/cbbc or by calling 0370 901 1227. There will be a draw to decide who gets them and the closing date is this weekend on September 4, so make sure you get in quick!

One fantastic film, shame about the accent James Hood

Review One Day

Anyone read the book? Perhaps you can tell me what nationality Anne Hathaway’s character is supposed to be. I couldn’t tell, so answers on a postcard. The national press has been cruel enough about Hathaway’s dodgy accent, so I won’t dwell for too long. But it is astounding that the actress was cast to play working class wallflower

Emma, who falls for the princely Dexter, alongside a largely British cast in a story by a British author. But despite having to spend two hours cringing as the leading lady tries to pronounce flirt and bath like someone in Emmerdale, there is not much wrong with One Day. The concept, (the work of David Nicholls in his book of the same name) is great - two people, who spend a drunken graduation night together, are re-visited every 15 July for twenty years. It’s a refreshing take on ‘boy meets

girl’ and it has gathered a massive following, probably because so many can relate to the tale of life and love, growing, and learning. By the end you’ll like the pair, who we watch become friends, deal with ups and downs, failed jobs, the death of a parent and becoming mature, decent human beings. Surprisingly, it’s not a chick flick. It was grittier in places and more sophisticated - no lingering stares or kisses in the rain. Instead it focused on the foolishness of its male lead and acts as a clip

round the ear for careless and carefree men everywhere, who can’t see a good thing when it’s right under their nose. Sadly, the film’s creators missed an opportunity to make more of the decades in which it was set. With the exception of two references to the explosion of crayfish on the takeaway food industry, there was little for us to get nostalgic about throughout the nineties and naughties (something I was looking forward to). But anyone over the age of about 20 will not fail to relate in some way

to this story, which is probably why the book has sold over 1,000,000 copies in the UK. It flits from heartbreaking scenes, such as Dexter’s mum telling him she fears he is not very nice anymore, to happier times when the friends call each other, or meet up at various stages. This is a film about life’s trials and triumphs and those we share them with. Forget the love part, forget the odd accent - it’s for anyone who is lucky enough to have had one true friendship. See it at The Capitol this week.

Showing on the big screen One Day

Apollo 18

Two people, one day. Revisiting two friends on the same day each year, One Day follows how they grow, fall in love, experience loss and is a romantic must-see tale that is said to tug at the heartstrings of anyone who has had ‘one’ true love.

Using footage filmed in the style of a documentary, this Sci Fi horror documents the fictional mission of Apollo 18 to the moon (a shuttle launch that was aborted in the 1970s). Could what they find be the reason no one has ever been back since?

Village Focus - Storrington

South Downs delight The South Downs National Park is one of ten National Parks in England, recognised as a nationally important and diverse area with outstanding natural beauty and rich cultural heritage. Stretching more than 100 miles long and home to over 108,000 people, the South Downs National Park is the third largest and most populated National Park. Its ancient woodlands, heathlands, rivers and 20km of heritage coastline are interspersed with bustling market towns, and a multitude of rural villages. The famous South Downs Way runs the entire length of the National Park, from Winchester to Eastbourne, and is a magnet for walkers, cyclists and nature lovers. The town of Storrington is located about half way along the South Downs Way. Surrounded by an area rich in biodiversity and natural habitats and cultural heritage. There is the Pulborough Wetlands Centre, Sullington Warren, Amberley Wild Brooks, Chanctonbury Ring, Amberley Working Museum and two of three castles in the South Downs National Park Amberley and Arundel, all within a few miles.

It’s no wonder the South Downs is one of the South East’s most popular tourist destinations, with 39 million individual visits every year. Beautiful countryside stretches from Winchester to Beachy Head near Eastbourne. Historic houses, archaeological monuments and works of art are plentiful, as are wildlife beauty spots. There are market towns and villages for shopping and farmers markets. When you want to stop for lunch or take an afternoon break there are tearooms and traditional ale houses. National Parks are known as Britain’s Breathing Spaces. We want to help people enjoy the South Downs while at the same time protecting and conserving the natural landscape. That means responsible car use, sustainable tourism and everyone working together for the benefit of the Downs. The South Downs National Park Authority (SDNPA) is the publicly funded organisation responsible for fulfilling the purposes and responsibilities of being a National Park. The SDNPA will work in partnership with people and organisations across the entire Park, to help protect and enhance the landscape, wildlife and cultural history of the area.

Storrington and Sullington, gateway to the south downs The Parish of Storrington & Sullington lies nestled below and dominated by the imposing Northern side of the South Downs. The scarp slopes of the chalk downland sweep down to the sandy ridges where the development of villages began with the spring line. The river Stor, from which Storrington gets its name, rises under the Downs at Chantry then cascades northwards on its journey through the middle of the village and on to its eventual confluence with the river Arun. It is the spring line, together with the sand extraction and the river Stor, which powered the now long-gone mills, that led to the founding and growth of Storrington & Sullington as a community. Sadly some would say, Storrington & Sullington is no longer the centre for sheep (sending our Southdown breed to Australia, New Zealand and even the Falkland Islands from Shoreham port), or for harvesting the broadleaf timber for the iron ore furnaces of Sussex. It is no longer the stop off place for Belloc at the White Horse or Laurie Lee and Laura Wishart, who had their dalliances on the downs after visiting the local tea rooms! However, the present community is at the very heart of the South Downs National Park. Indeed it is almost exactly half way along the circa 126 miles of the South Downs Way. Running from Winchester to Eastbourne this is one of the classic walks/rides in England with its fabulous views of countryside and sea, flora and fauna, together with great beauty and tranquillity. All of this within a stroll of the centre of

Storrington & Sullington, with our part of the Way offering stunning views to the South and West down the Arun valley to Arundel Castle Littlehampton and the Isle of Wight. Then turn around to view The Weald, the North Downs and Leith Hill. So, how do you get there? For walkers, cyclists and horse riders there is naturally the South Downs Way but you don’t have to do all one hundred and twenty six miles! A train from Horsham to Amberley will put you at a good place to start, as will a bus to Washington. Storrington is handily placed in the middle of that stretch of the pathway and it is easy to come down and have some sustenance there. Alternatively, you could just drive or bus to Storrington to start your trip. What does Storrington have to offer for the traveller? Well apart from The Anchor, The Moon and The White Horse pubs (there are rooms to stay at The White Horse), there are five restaurants, Indian, Chinese, Thai, Italian and Classic, three takeaways, two fish and chip shops, a good size supermarket and a wide range of shops and tea rooms! There is also a cycle shop where you can hire bikes to use on the South Downs Way. Do not forget to look around the village itself. There is a central Conservation Area with listed buildings, a fine church and just by it the Village Museum. It has both a Mill Pond in the middle next to the library and a large pond on the western fringe by the Cricket, Football and Recreation Areas. Also just to the West is Parham House, open to the public and well worth a visit.

Property

Ask the Experts The Letting Agent

Kathy Taylor Senior Manager Leaders

Q A

I have heard the phrase ‘Quiet Enjoyment’ used in relation to Tenancies. Can you explain what this means?

The term ‘quiet enjoyment’ in lettings terms does not refer to noise but actually means that if the Tenant is conducting the Tenancy in a satisfactory way, I.E. is paying the rent and not breaching the terms of the Agreement, then he should be allowed to ‘quietly’ occupy the premises without any interruption from the Landlord or anyone else (ie the Court Bailiff); ‘the Tenant paying the Rent and performing and observing the obligations on the Tenant’s part… shall peaceably hold and enjoy the Property during the Term without any lawful interruption by the Landlord or any person rightfully claiming under, through or in trust for the Landlord’. What most people won’t realise however is that ‘quiet enjoyment’ also means that the property should be clean when the Tenant takes occupancy. In other words, from the day he starts paying rent he should be able to move in and enjoy the property without having his ‘quiet enjoyment’ disturbed because cleaning needs to be undertaken. There was a case recently where a Tenant successfully made a claim against their Landlord for breach of contract because he had not had that quiet enjoyment when he occupied the property. Cleaning was eventually agreed and curtains were cleaned but there is no doubt that he had not had quiet enjoyment and the Landlord had to compensate him accordingly. This is quite a lesson to learn and one that many Landlords may not fully appreciate. As an experienced managing agent we always recommend that Landlords have their properties professionally cleaned prior to the start of the first Tenancy. This sets the standards for the cleanliness of the property throughout all future tenancies. Should an out-going Tenant later down the line not leave the property in an acceptably clean condition then the Landlord has grounds to instruct cleaners and charge the cost from the Tenants deposit. For information on this or any other aspect of Letting or Renting contact Kathy Taylor 01403 217585 or kathytaylor@leaders.co.uk

First In Letting www.leaders.co.uk

THE FIRST CHOICE FOR LETTINGS CHEAP AGENTS COST THOUSANDS In these difficult financial times landlords will naturally be attracted to the opportunity to save a few pounds. But opting for an agent who offers the cheapest fees is not always the most cost-effective solution. With rental demand high and properties in short supply, some agents will slash their letting and management fees to attract landlords. This may seem like good news on the surface, but be wary of deals that seem too good to be true. Leaders have seen too many landlords let down by agents who were chosen for their low fees, but turned out to deliver a poor, and in some cases, dishonest and unprofessional service. This usually ends up costing landlords a great deal of money, certainly more than what they had ‘saved’ on fees.

WELL ESTABLISHED AGENT As a well-established letting specialist with more than 28 years in the industry, Leaders has been approached on many occasions by desperate landlords when they have been let down by their agent. Landlords must be aware that when choosing a letting agent you get what you pay for in terms of service and professionalism.

EXPERIENCE AND REPUTATION When choosing a letting agent landlords should never base their decision on price alone, but also consider experience, reputation, professionalism and overall quality of service. There is more to letting and managing a property than meets the eye. Knowledgeable, qualified and well trained staff are needed to advise landlords on the lettings market; vet prospective tenants properly; comply with complex legislation; compile a professional inventory; ensure tenants’ safety and landlords’ interests are fully protected; and deal promptly with maintenance issues. All this – and more - requires a lot of time, expertise and resources which agents charging exceptionally low fees are unlikely to be able to provide. This can end up costing landlords thousands of pounds in lost rent, legal fees or even fines should the agent fail to comply with the law. For peace of mind, Leaders recommend choosing an agent that specialises in lettings only and who is a member of a professional body such as the Association of Residential Letting Agents (ARLA).

Motors Is your spider-sense tingling? the-resident.co.uk

The new Ferrari 458 Spider: the world’s first mid-rear engined berlinetta equipped with a retractable hard top Olli Nott Motors Reporter

olli@the-resident.co.uk

The new 458 Spider joins the 458 Italia, widening the range of Ferrari’s mid-rear engined V8s and offering the same uncompromising technological solutions, handling and performance in a refined open-top configuration. It is equipped with a Ferrari patented, fully retractable hard top, a world first for a sports car with this lay-out. The 458 Spider is powered by Ferrari’s naturally-aspirated, directinjection 4.5 litre V8 which was nominated as the 2011 International Engine of the Year for its engineering excellence in terms of driveability, performance, economy and refinement. The power is transferred to the road by Ferrari’s class-leading dual-clutch F1 paddle-shift transmission through the sophisticated E-Diff, itself integrated with the F1-Trac traction control and high-performance ABS for maximum handling

dynamics. Certain features, such as its accelerator pedal mapping and the damping of the multilink suspension, have been calibrated to guarantee maximum sportiness and absolute driving pleasure with the top down, in line with Maranello’s exclusive spider tradition. Even the engine soundtrack has been honed to ensure that the car’s occupants are completely

captivated by the drop-top driving experience. Entirely in aluminium, the hardtop solution adopted for the 458 Spider offers a number of advantages over the traditional folding soft-top, including a reduction of 25 kg in weight and a deployment time of just 14 seconds. Fully integrated into the styling of the car, the hard-top was engineered to fit neatly ahead of the

engine bay without compromising aerodynamics or the performance of the car. The small space needed to house the roof enables the designers to include a generous rear bench for luggage behind the seats. The rear of the car is characterised by innovative forms with the buttresses designed to optimise the flow of air to the engine intakes and the clutch and gearbox oil radiators. For maximum comfort whilst driving top down the 458 Spider features a generously-sized adjustable electric

New technical solutions adopted for the chassis guarantee identical levels of structural rigidity with the roof up or down. The result is a car that is truly exciting to drive, blending extreme performance with the responsiveness that has always characterised Ferrari’s open-top berlinettas.

Boss says belief is the key for Hornets James Herd Football

Horsham’s new-look side experienced another mixed week in the Ryman League Premier Division, again winning away but losing at home. The Hornets first travelled to AFC Hornchurch, aiming to build on their excellent 4-3 victory at Kingstonian. And they were able to do that, as goals by Tony Nwachukwu and substitute Conor Hider gave the visitors a 2-0 victory. It was Nwachukwu’s fourth goal in two matches and a first in Horsham colours by Hider, the former Brighton and Hove Albion U18 striker. Bank Holiday Monday saw the visit of promotion hopefuls Lewes in front of 434 fans at Gorings Mead. Paul Booth headed home to put the Rooks 1-0 up in the first half and the visitors held firm to record their third win in a row. Hornets manager Justin Luchford said: “It wasn’t a particularly good performance at Hornchurch and we didn’t start well against Lewes, but we did finish the Lewes game well and it was a little frustrating that we didn’t get anything from it. “The way we stood up and gave it a go in the second half was a plus. We didn’t just lie down at 1-0. It’s very easy for a club like ours to lose a goal and then capitulate, but we didn’t. We stayed strong. “I just feel we were a bit frightened of them because of who they are. I said to the lads afterwards, we’ve got to start believing in ourselves. That is

my job. “We’re not going to go anywhere and put 10 men behind the ball, because that’s a recipe for disaster. “Wherever we go, we’re going to give it a go. I’ve no interest in going to places to try to get a draw. We’ve got to try to win every game possible.” Luchford said Ryan Woodford, who suffered a prolapsed disc at Kingstonian, walked without painkillers for the first time on Tuesday. The boss added: “He’s on the mend, but I don’t expect him back shortly. I think he’s a good six weeks away – and that’s if everything goes according to plan.

We’re not going to go ‘anywhere and put 10 men behind the ball ’

“We’ll make sure the experts make the decision, not him. I know what he’s like – he’ll want to play as soon as he can, but we have to make sure he’s right because we can’t have him breaking down again.” Horsham will take on Margate at Gorings Mead tomorrow (Saturday), a game that Luchford is particularly looking forward to. He revealed: “The assistant manager down there is my best friend. We’ve known each other since we were 10 and he was with me last year at Faversham. “I look forward to welcoming him down. I’m sure between me and him we’ll be trying to get one over on each other. I know a lot of the Margate lads

Conor Hider (right), here playing against Lewes, scored at Hornchurch

Tony Nwachukwu seems quite pleased with his goal on Saturday

and they’re a very well-organised team. They’ll be looking to come to us and get three points. “They have a lot of money to spend. I expect them to be in the top six and I’m sure they think the same.” After two wins on the road but two defeats at Gorings Mead, Luchford is determined that Horsham will reproduce their away form at home soon. He said: “Crowds stay with you when you’re doing well. We haven’t been able to give them too much to

shout about at home just yet, so we’ll be looking to get that monkey off our backs.” As part of Non-League Day, Horsham are offering cut-price admission to all Premier League and Football League season ticket holders. Show your season ticket at the turnstiles tomorrow and pay £5 (adults) or £1 (U16). See www.the-resident.co.uk/sport for more about the Hornchurch and Lewes matches.

Late goal rocks YM Nick Hind Football

An early contender for goal of the season denied much-improved Horsham YMCA their first point as they lost 2-1 to Peacehaven and Telscombe. Chris Snell’s late wonder strike at Gorings Mead condemned YM to a third successive defeat, but they can count themselves unlucky after showing the backbone that will be needed this season. Lloyd Graham and Ashley Dugdale added steel to the back line and YM held out until the hour before Ashley Rees opened the scoring for the freeflowing visitors. YM responded with a purpose previously unseen this season. Lee Wood levelled, applying the finish to Charlie Abrehart’s through ball after YM’s best move of the match. The Gorings Mead faithful were in good cheer as YM looked to build on their first league goal of the season. But they were stunned into silence as Snell’s 30-yard rocket slapped against the back of the net. Tuesday’s game proved more fruitful for YM as they bagged their first win of the season. Sammy Donnelly’s troops finally repaid the boss with a 3-1 win at Worthing United, who finished with nine players after Scott Chamberlain and James Bywater saw red. Storrington are third in Division 2 after wins against Oakwood (4-0) and Midhurst and Easebourne (3-2). The Swans are averaging more than three goals per game, proving there is life after last season’s top scorer Tim Martin moved to YM. Steyning are bottom after crashing to a 4-0 home defeat against Mile Oak and picking up their first point, 1-1 against Southwick. Broadbridge Heath notched up two wins in contrasting styles to climb to fifth in Division 3. Saturday’s fixture saw Heath hit top form to topple Barnham 3-1. Martyn Flack put the Bears two up with a well-timed strike and cheeky lob before Russell Mortimer’s volley from the edge of the area ensured all three points. Monday’s trip to Haywards Heath proved a stiffer challenge as a culmination of enforced changes and a dog of a pitch meant thoughts of total football were left on the backburner. Showing they can win in more than one style, the Bears battled hard for a 2-0 success that keeps their unbeaten streak intact. Forest are up to second after beating Hurstpierpoint 2-0 and recording an epic 6-4 win at TD Shipley. Gary Pritchard scored twice for Shipley, Paul White twice for Forest. TD Shipley hammered Clymping 6-2, with two goals each for Mark Cave and Russell Dentith. Roffey are pointless after 3-0 home defeats to Rottingdean Village and Ifield Edwards.

Stunning fightback leaves Horsham on brink of title Adding to Martin Read Cricket

Horsham kept their top-of-thetable position by pulling off a remarkable victory over 2010 champions Preston Nomads. After being inserted on a dry and dusty Horsham pitch, the hosts soon found themselves in trouble as openers James Johnson and John Burroughs were dismissed cheaply by evergreen paceman Carl Simon. Worse followed when Devon Endersby departed to the same bowler, leaving Horsham reeling on 14-3. Sam Attfield and Will Beer staged a recovery until Beer was run out by county colleague Joe Gatting and Attfield’s demise for 32 reduced Horsham to 69-5. Despite a cameo of 30 from Matt Henry, wickets continued to fall at regular intervals as Horsham stuttered to a seemingly inadequate total of 133-9. Seven batsmen reached double figures, yet nobody was able to stay long enough for the team to post an

intimidating total. Simon took 4-29, taking his tally to 64 wickets this season, and skipper Kashim Ibrahim a frugal 3-13. Nomads appeared to be progressing to a comfortable win when they reached 64-2, with 28 overs to get 70 more runs, but Horsham’s highquality spin attack again proved indomitable. Ring-rusty Luke Marshall, on his seasonal debut, snaffled wickets in the first over of each of his spells, while Beer and Michael Munday were far too demanding for Nomads. From 68-4, the visitors subsided to 80-6 and 104-8 as Munday snared two victims in an over. Even then, with Ibrahim at the helm, Simon to come and few runs to defend, Horsham were uncertain of victory. But Nomads needed to win

and declined to shut up shop. Ibrahim’s dismissal left Simon stranded and the denouement was swift. Jeremy Green top-scored with 30, but the day belonged to Munday (4-19), Beer (4-38) and Marshall (230). They were fantastic.” Horsham’s sixth consecutive win puts them on 401 points with just one game remaining – tomorrow (Saturday) at home to Hastings, who are second with 383. Having won the title in four of the last five years, Nomads are third with 362 and out of contention. Horsham will win the league title if they avoid defeat and will still be champions if they lose but obtain 13 points. Roffey resumed their winning ways, beating Chichester by 52 runs at home after scoring 200-9. Chris Webb made 44 before Andy McGorian took 4-41 and the everreliable Luke Barnard 4-48. Roffey move back up to fifth in the table and entertain Nomads tomorrow. Chichester avoid relegation, but Pulborough’s defeat at Hastings sees them demoted with Three Bridges.

Just over a month since our first coach to The Amex, we have already made six visits! Two home Carling Cup games helped boost the tally and Albion, top of the Championship, have been drawn at home to Liverpool. I think our members will agree that just about everything has gone smoothly regarding getting to the ground and home again. Timings have been tweaked and even the route has been changed to provide the best service. The atmosphere on the coach is very friendly and once we even stopped to buy cakes from a garden stall on the way back from a match. Being a co-founder of the North West Sussex Seagulls, I am very pleased with the way the supporters’ club has developed. We set out to provide affordable, reliable, safe and convenient coach travel to home games and this is being achieved. We are even making provisional arrangements for a second coach as the first is almost fully booked every match. I was 11 years old when I started watching Albion in the mid Sixties, going to the Goldstone on a supporters’ coach. The local supporters’ club, the Blue and Whites, folded due to lack of interest when Albion went to Gillingham in the late Nineties. Returning to live in Horsham two years ago, I was keen to see Albion regularly. As there was no local supporters’ club, I set about forming one to provide transport to games and teamed up with Andy Stonestreet. The effort I have put into the new venture is also in memory of those who ran coaches in the past, without whom I would not have had many unforgettable memories. Those memories have been added to in the last few weeks. On Saturday I welcomed on board someone I used to travel with on the coach to the Goldstone more than 40 years ago. A couple of others from the Blue and Whites travel with us and I would like to invite other Blue and White members to get in touch. For those who are a bit frail, we will do our utmost to get you down to see Albion play in their magnificent new stadium. Lifts to the coach pick-up points can be arranged. So, Peggy, Les, Alan etc, please do get in touch on 01403 230554. We would also welcome you at any of our social meetings, the next in early October.

Help show go with a bang Matthew James Sport Editor

Horsham Amateur Boxing Club is appealing for more fighters to join before its major show in November. The club expects to put on at least a dozen fights at the Holbrook Club on Saturday, November 19, but a higher than usual proportion of the boxers may be outsiders. Horsham ABC has recently lost several ABA-carded fighters to the Army, while crowd favourite Dan Purchase has retired as he will be 34 in October.

The hot prospect from Billingshurst told The Resident: “I started boxing about four years ago, when I was 11, after nagging my dad for a few months so I could go down the gym. “My first fight was in November 2009. I’ve fought a few national champions, past and present, and I’m around that standard but I’ve not fought for a belt yet. “My ambition is to win the regional and national titles in the next year before I join the Army in Loughborough and continue to box. “I box because I love the sport, so

I don’t really have any ambitions of going pro. I would love to fight for England and there’s a strong chance of that if I win the national title.” Purchase said: “It’s very hard to get him bouts because no one wants to fight someone who has won eight out of eight. He’s still a little bit raw, but he’s improving technically all the time and his attitude and dedication are first class.” Another young prospect, 13-yearold Bradley Parsons, won his first bout against Moulsecoomb’s Archie Burdon at Brighton in March. Other attractions on the November

19 show are likely to include middleweights Merle Cavagnuolo and Braden Mercer plus welterweight Ben Pringle. The club is seeking sponsorship, ideally for a minibus to shows across the South. For more information about this or joining the club, contact head coach Lee Cole on 07831 553328, visit www.horshamabc.co.uk or see www. facebook.com/horshamabc The club also runs fitness nights in the gym at North Parade, Horsham, twice a week. See www.tryboxing. co.uk

discipline, ‘it’sIt teaches fantastic for fitness and there’s a good camaraderie here

Purchase said: “The season starts this month and we are trying to encourage new people in – particularly juniors, both boys and girls, who can box from the age of 11. “It’s a fantastic sport, very demanding but very rewarding. It teaches discipline, it’s fantastic for fitness and there’s a good camaraderie here.” Although he hopes to join the Army too, Horsham will keep Danny Kirkland for another year. The 15-year-old southpaw, who attends The Weald School, was inspired by Ricky Hatton but his style is more reminiscent of Joe Calzaghe. Any further comparisons with the Welsh great would be unfair, except to say that Kirkland has won all of his eight fights.

Youth Baseball Horsham Junior Baseball Club (HJBC) played three softball games against the Great Britain Girls U13 softball team at Richings Park. HJBC won the first game 12-9, thanks to brilliant (underarm) softball pitching from Callum Hunt, Daniel Cannons and Tom Crabb, catching by Callum Oldmeadow and Callum Hunt, and batting by Sam Bradley and Matthew Oldmeadow. GB won the other games 10-9 and 12-8.

Motor Sport West Chiltington’s Kieran Vernon will race in the Porsche Carrera Cup at Knockhill, Fife. After qualifying tomorrow (Saturday), races will start at 10.45am and 4.10pm on Sunday. The latter will be live on ITV4 and the other may be shown during the afternoon. Vernon could have raced his Renault at Thruxton, Hampshire, but has effectively conceded that title by choosing to race the Porsche. Southwater’s Jolyon Palmer finished 14th in the second GP2 race at Spa, Belgium. Danny Kirkland (centre) with coaches Shaun Stepney (left) and Dan Purchase
