The first park district in Illinois to achieve all 3 prestigious awards. Learn more at heparks.org.

1964 The formation of the Hoffman Estates Park District began on January 22, 1964, when a public meeting was held to discuss the development of parks and recreation services for the residents of Hoffman Estates. A steering committee was established to meet regularly on the issue. The first organized activity was a six-week recreation playground program.

1968 Four HEPD parks were added: Edward F Pinger Park (now Evergreen), Dorothy Sicher Park (now Locust Park), Highland and Highpoint Parks.

1968

1964 Steering Committee members were Hal Gillespie, Bud Bartosch, Jim Gannon, Joe Fabbrini, Jim Sloan, Lyle Button, Betty Fink and Pat Muldowney. Due to the great support of the committee, homeowners associations, women's clubs and the village residents, petitions were circulated and filed.

1998 The Hoffman Estates Park District Foundation was established as an Illinois not-for-profit organization on December 30, 1998, with a mission to provide recreation for everyone in the community, regardless of their social, physical or economic circumstances or limitations.

1973 Approximately 24 programs were offered each season. Total acreage was 200 at 23 park sites. 1981 The Willow Recreation Center was built on an 18-acre site on the west side of Lexington Drive, across from the Willow Park playground site. This community center with racquetball courts and a health club also included a gymnasium, whirlpool, sauna and multi-purpose rooms. Other improvements on the site included tennis courts, a playground and an outdoor running track.

2000 HEPD purchased the portable climbing wall that has become a popular attraction at community events.

What’ s ahead

Walking programs take off. With the growing concern over obesity and sedentary lifestyle, private and governmental health organizations call for organized walking programs. Walking and biking paths wind for many miles through city parks and forest preserves connecting cities.

2013 HEPD earns the distinction of accreditation by the NRPA’s Certified Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies, making it the only agency in Illinois that has earned the three highest honors: NRPA Gold Medal, CAPRA, Illinois Distinguished Agency.

Hoffman Estates Park District Initiatives

The NRPA has identified three values – Conservation, Health & Wellness and Social Equity - to describe how Parks and Recreation agencies across the nation are working in thousands of communities to touch the lives of millions of people. Here at HEPD, our Green Team, HEALTH and Social Equity initiatives parallel NRPA’s three pillars. Here’s how:

Green Team Initiatives Our Green Team works toward NRPA’s Conservation Pillar to reduce the carbon footprint of our facilities, parks and programs and to educate our community on ways to be green. When you see this symbol, look for tips on how to reduce, reuse and recycle. HEALTH stands for “Helping Everyone Achieve A Lifestyle that’s Healthy” and represents our efforts to reduce the rate of childhood obesity in our community; consistent with NRPA’s Health & Wellness Pillar. Wherever you see the apple, you’ll find health tips and programs that encourage a healthy lifestyle for all.

Social Equity

At HEPD, we value the philosophy that our parks and recreation programs are for all people – regardless of the color of their skin, age, income level or ability. It’s important that all people have access to parks, programs and facilities that enrich their lives and add value to the community. Where you see this icon, you’ll see programs, organizations and efforts that demonstrate that value.

In 2014, the Park District celebrates 50 years in existence. When you see this seal, look for facts and photos that showcase our history of providing fun and recreation that spans five decades from 1964 to the present.

First 50 people to register for any 2014 program or membership get a Birthday Gift! Mission Statement

The mission of the Hoffman Estates Park District is to enhance the quality of life of our residents and guests by providing first class parks, facilities, programs and services through environmentally and fiscally responsible management practices.

Customer Service Pledge

Our satisfaction guarantee is our promise to provide quality parks, facilities, recreation programs and leisure services that meet the expectations of our customers. If you are not satisfied with any recreational program the HEPD provides due to the quality of instruction, the child’s inability to adapt emotionally to the class, or the inappropriate skill level for the registered participant, a full refund will be processed. To determine that a class does not meet their satisfaction, participants must attend the first two class sessions, but request a refund and fill out all appropriate paperwork before the third class meeting. Refund request forms are available at the Triphahn Center, Willow Recreation Center and Prairie Stone™ Sports & Wellness Center. No processing fee will apply to refunds issued under the Satisfaction Guarantee Policy. If you are not satisfied, we would appreciate your comments, suggestions, or ideas for improvement. Please look for our customer comment cards at all district facilities. We appreciate hearing your positive comments, as well as your suggestions for improvement.

Community Commitment

The Hoffman Estates Park District remains committed to providing the best recreation and leisure services to our community. With our “satisfaction guaranteed” pledge, residents and their guests can be assured that the Hoffman Estates Park District staff will work to not only to meet expectations, but surpass them.

COMMISSIONER

Board Meetings are held monthly at 7:00P at Triphahn Center and Ice Arena.

Keith Evans

TREASURER

The governing body of the park district is comprised of seven elected commissioners who represent the recreational needs of their community for four year, unpaid terms. Park commissioners have the power to levy taxes within prescribed limits, establish or change park district policies, sign agreements, award contracts and possess all of the powers similar to those of a board of directors for a public corporation. Park commissioners work as a board to interpret the park and recreation needs of the community, formulate short and long term plans and inform the public of the purpose, worth and extent of the district’s services, parks and facilities.

COMMISSIONER

In 2014, the Hoffman Estates Park District celebrates its 50th anniversary. We have big plans in the works to share this exciting time with you. Throughout 2014, we will be honoring this monumental milestone by recognizing those who have made contributions over the years to the success of the Park District. We’ll focus on our anniversary as a theme for many of the events you already enjoy. These Pat McGinn Dean Bostrom events will reflect on our legacy of fun and recreation spanning 50 years. We will celebrate the mission of the Park District by remembering our history from our humble beginnings at the Vogelei House to today’s award-winning Gold Medal Park District that spans more than 70 parks, seven facilities and hundreds of programs and services.

Letter from the President

COMMISSIONER

st

What’s more, the Friends of HE Parks, the charitable foundation that supports the Park District in its mission to provide first class parks, facilities and services, will celebrate 15 years of its wonderful work in our community. In addition to the 50th anniversary festivities, we are bringing you a variety of new fitness opportunities this year, including: TRX Suspension Training – Take your fitness to the next level with a new and interesting way to challenge your body in every plane of motion. TRX involves leveraging your body weight and using gravity for an intense workout. Contact Prairie Stone Sports & Wellness Center for more details and to register (page 36). Running Classes – Have you ever dreamed of being a runner? We can help adults and kids learn to run. The 5K running class is designed for the inexperienced or novice adult interested in completing a 5K race. The 10K class helps adult 5K runners move to the next level in racing. For youth, we offer Ready, Set, Run that helps kids age 7-16 train for a 5K race. (Page 39) Fit Together – Make fitness a family matter. Families can work out together and improve their physical fitness in this class at Prairie Stone Sports & Wellness Center (page 37). Families can have some fun outside the gym, too. We’re planning a special night out for mothers and their sons at our Mother-Son Date Night (page 7). Of course, we will continue our popular Daddy Daughter Dance (page 6) for fathers and their little girls. For parents who want grown-up time, there’s always our Parents’ Night Out events where the kids can have a blast at Prairie Stone Sports and Wellness Center while the parents have time to themselves. Don’t forget your canine companion at our new Dog Obedience classes (page 35). We know you’ll find many enjoyable activities this Winter to help you move toward your fitness goals and have fun in the process through our 50th anniversary. On behalf of the Park Board of Commissioners, we wish you a happy and prosperous 2014. Keith Evans, President Park Board of Commissioners

The 50+ Senior Center opened on March 18, 2006 with fewer than 20 members. At the grand opening, 15 members attended along with government and school district officials, Mayor McLeod and several village trustees. In its early days, the group met weekly at Willow Recreation Center to play cards. In a short time, the group has quickly grown to nearly 500 members with programs running all week long that reflect today’s healthy, active 50+ members. ----Celebrate the Hoffman Estates Park District's 50th Year by joining the 50+ Club for The Midtown Men who branch out from their acclaimed renditions of songs by the Four Seasons to bring you more sensational music by The Beatles, The Beach Boys, and the best artists from the golden age of Motown.

TURN OFF THE TAP: Don’t let the water run! Turn off the water while you brush your teeth, while shaving and between dishes while you’re washing dishes. The average bathroom faucet flows at a rate of two gallons a minute, according to the EPA’s WaterSense initiative. PLANT A TREE: Estimating conservatively in 1985 dollars, the Forest Service estimated the value of an individual tree at $273 annually — well over $57,000 over its lifetime. That includes its contribution to climate control, soil erosion and stormwater management, wildlife shelter and air pollution reduction. Not to mention, trees planted strategically can keep your house cool in summer and adds beauty to your home. (From TheDailyGreen.com) In 2012 alone, the Park District planted 30 trees, 90 evergreens and 205 shrubs. Read more about the Park District’s Green Team initiatives at heparks.org.

Weight Loss Challenge

What years did the two Community Centers open? -----

The Willow Recreation Center was built in 1981 on an 18-acre site on the west side of Lexington Drive, with racquetball courts, fitness club, gymnasium, whirlpool and sauna and multi-purpose rooms. A unique way to honor and remember a loved one is with a memorial tree or park bench. A tree is also the perfect way to commemorate one of life’s milestones, from weddings and anniversaries to the birth of a child. A one-time donation of $600 lets you place the tree of your choice in a park that is special to you. For a Park Bench, a one-time donation of $1,500 buys a new contour style park bench mounted on a concrete pad with a bronze memorial plaque at the location of your choice. Or, a one-time donation of $300 buys a bronze memorial plaque to be mounted onto an existing park bench of your choice. For more information contact John Giacalone at 847-285-5465.

Park Path Distances

What’s the distance of your favorite park path? Visit heparks.org to see a list.

STOP IDLING: Did you know that Americans idle away 2.9 billion gallons of gas a year, worth around $78.2 billion? Save gas and reduce wear on your vehicle by turning off your motor instead of idling at railroad crossings, for example. Avoid the drive-thru and walk into your favorite fast food store. Running in idle for more than 10 seconds wastes more gas than is needed for startup. From TheDailyGreen.com The Park District has an anti-idling policy that requires staff to turn off a vehicle if it is not in use. Read more about the Park District’s Green Team initiatives at heparks.org.

It is in the best interest of our whole community to encourage a healthy lifestyle for all. The Friends of HE Parks Foundation is a dedicated group of community volunteers who raise money so that more residents can participate in and enjoy recreational opportunities, regardless of their social, physical or economic circumstances and limitations. Financial struggle comes with great stress that can take its toll on the mental and physical health of an individual and his or her family. Numerous studies have shown that physical activity and recreation are imperative to relieving stress and maintaining health. It is the mission of the Park District to promote the health and well-being of the residents in our district through our facilities and programs. The Foundation strives to promote events that will raise money to help disadvantaged families of our community be able to enjoy Park District programs and facilities. One way you can help is by attending one of our fun events throughout the year. For information on how you can help, contact Peg Kusmierski at pkusmierski@heparks.org.
