1964 A referendum was put to vote on May 2, 1964. The referendum passed and the Hoffman Estates Park District was officially established. The first Hoffman Estates Park District offices were located in the village hall, a frame house located at 161 Illinois Blvd. The structure was built in 1916, on land which was once a working farm. The park offices were moved, on several occasions, to various schools in the area. In 1969, the Park District purchased the Vogelei Park property at 650 W Higgins, to establish a more permanent home for their administrative offices.

2000 Prairie Stone™ Sports & Wellness Center opened in 2000. New programs evolved including indoor swimming, wall climbing, and fitness classes, as well as nutrition, wellness classes and youth basketball leagues.

1995 Seascape Family Aquatic Center opened, which received the Outstanding Facility Award (Division II C) from IPRA.

2003 NAEYC granted accreditation to Willow Recreation Center preschool program in 2003. the district maintains more than 60 different park sites throughout the community encompassing over 686 acres of land.

1992 Poplar Creek Country Club received the 1992 Outstanding Facility Award from IPRA (Division II A).

Coming Soon: the Park District goes mobile with an app that allows the community to access recreational opportunities wherever they roam. Users can get notifications about park and field conditions, pool closings, program and class interruptions due to severe weather.

The first western parks were developed and dedicated in the fall of 2002 and include Princeton, Canterbury and Tall Oaks.

1994 The PCCC Junior Golf Academy was developed in 1994 and consisted of three levels of skill orientation: Golden Bears, Sharks and the Masters. The Junior Golf Academy program averaged approximately 150 participants per season

Hoffman Estates Park District Initiatives

The NRPA has identified three values – Conservation, Health & Wellness and Social Equity - to describe how Parks and Recreation agencies across the nation are working in thousands of communities to touch the lives of millions of people. Here at HEPD, our Green Team, HEALTH and Social Equity initiatives parallel NRPA’s three pillars. Here’s how:

Green Team Initiatives Our Green Team works toward NRPA’s Conservation Pillar to reduce the carbon footprint of our facilities, parks and programs and to educate our community on ways to be green. When you see this symbol, look for tips on how to reduce, reuse and recycle. HEALTH stands for “Helping Everyone Achieve A Lifestyle that’s Healthy” and represents our efforts to reduce the rate of childhood obesity in our community; consistent with NRPA’s Health & Wellness Pillar. Wherever you see the apple, you’ll find health tips and programs that encourage a healthy lifestyle for all.

Social Equity

At HEPD, we value the philosophy that our parks and recreation programs are for all people – regardless of the color of their skin, age, income level or ability. It’s important that all people have access to parks, programs and facilities that enrich their lives and add value to the community. Where you see this icon, you’ll see programs, organizations and efforts that demonstrate that value.

In 2014, the Park District celebrates 50 years in existence. When you see this seal, look for facts and photos that showcase our history of providing fun and recreation that spans five decades from 1964 to the present.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Hoffman Estates Park District (HEPD) is to enhance the quality of life of our residents and guests by providing first class parks, facilities, programs and services through environmentally and fiscally responsible management practices.

Customer Service Pledge

Our satisfaction guarantee is our promise to provide quality parks, facilities, recreation programs and leisure services that meet the expectations of our customers. If you are not satisfied with any recreational program the HEPD provides due to the quality of instruction, the child’s inability to adapt emotionally to the class, or the inappropriate skill level for the registered participant, a full refund will be processed. To determine that a class does not meet their satisfaction, participants must attend the first two class sessions, but request a refund and fill out all appropriate paperwork before the third class meeting. Refund request forms are available at the Triphahn Center, Willow Recreation Center and Prairie Stone™ Sports & Wellness Center. No processing fee will apply to refunds issued under the Satisfaction Guarantee Policy. If you are not satisfied, we would appreciate your comments, suggestions, or ideas for improvement. Please look for our customer comment cards at all district facilities. We appreciate hearing your positive comments, as well as your suggestions for improvement.

Community Commitment

The HEPD remains committed to providing the best recreation and leisure services to our community. With our “satisfaction guaranteed” pledge, residents and their guests can be assured that the HEPD staff will work to not only to meet expectations, but surpass them.

Park Board of Commissioners

The governing body of the Park District is comprised of seven elected commissioners who represent the recreational needs of their community for four year, unpaid terms. Park commissioners have the power to levy taxes within prescribed limits, establish or change Park District policies, sign agreements, award contracts and possess all of the powers similar to those of a board of directors for a public corporation. Park commissioners work as a board to interpret the park and recreation needs of the community, formulate short and long term plans and inform the public of the purpose, worth and extent of the district’s services, parks and facilities. Board Meetings are held monthly at 7:00P at Triphahn Center and Ice Arena. Park Board (left to right): ASST. SECRETARY Mike Bickham, TREASURER Ron Evans, COMMISSIONER Pat McGinn, PRESIDENT Keith Evans, COMMISSIONER Lili McGovern, COMMISSIONER Kaz Mohan, VICE PRESIDENT Ronald Greenberg, EXEC. DIRECTOR & SECRETARY Dean Bostrom

Letter from the President Greetings from Hoffman Estates Park District! The year 2014 is a very special year for us, as it marks our 50th year in existence. We’re excited to share with you some of our history in this issue. Look for historical facts on many of the pages then be sure to “Like” us on Facebook for a chance to win prizes in our upcoming trivia contests. Each new year offers a fresh start and an opportunity to take steps toward a healthier lifestyle. Whether your goal involves being more active, losing excess pounds or trying a new hobby, at HEPD, we offer opportunities for people of all ages to enhance their lives and add enjoyment to lives. See a complete list on pages 3-4. I’d like to personally thank our volunteers who spend many hours giving back to our community. Their tireless efforts make our community a better place for everyone. Their support has helped us achieve so much in our 50 years, including our most recent honor. In November we joined the ranks of elite park and recreation agencies across the country by earning accreditation through the Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA) through the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA). We added the CAPRA accreditation to our list of prestigious awards including recognition as an Illinois Distinguished Park and Recreation Agency by the Illinois Park and Recreation Association and the National Gold Medal Award for Excellence in Parks & Recreation Management, the highest national honor in public parks and recreation. We are one of only two park districts in Illinois to have achieved all three prestigious awards. This is an exciting time for the Hoffman Estates Park District. We are pleased to share our second half century with you. Come along and take advantage of everything your award-winning Park District has to offer! Keith Evans, President Park Board of Commissioners

In 1979, the Park District acquired which site that has become the Administrative Headquarters and home to twin sheets of ice? -----

This 9-acre site was donated in 1979 by School District 54. Originally known as the Moonlake Property and part of the Peter Robin Farms, the district officially named the park as Blackhawk Park. Located at Higgins Road and Huntington Blvd, this site served as a home to the district's first lighted softball fields and is now the site of the Triphahn Community Center & Ice Arena.

Physical education encourages children to live active lifestyles and helps them build healthy habits that they will carry with them into adulthood. Physical activity is a great way to help children burn off their seemingly endless supply of energy. This is especially important for kinesthetic learners who need to move in order to learn. Our program focuses on helping children develop strong muscles, cardiovascular endurance and flexibility along with teamwork and self-confidence. Perfect opportunity for individuals being educated at home. Participants should wear athletic apparel and shoes to class each day. (5-16 years — Willow)

BENEFITS OF NUTRITION COUNSELING

-- Amy Daum, Registered Dietitian, PSS&WC

There are so many mixed messages in the media about food, nutrition, and the best meal plans. It’s challenging at best to determine which information is accurate and what plan is best for you. One of the best ways to incorporate a healthier lifestyle and a lifelong nutrition plan is to partner with a qualified health professional like a Registered Dietitian (RD). RDs are food and nutrition experts, who are trained in translating scientifically-based nutrition information, into practical tips to improve your quality of life. Check out the benefits of nutrition counseling with a Registered Dietitian. A Plan That Fits Your Lifestyle Partnering with an RD for nutrition counseling provides you with a complete review of your lifestyle as it relates to nutrition, wellness, and eating habits. In turn, you will be provided with an individualized plan for success. Whether you travel for work regularly and eat away from for most meals, or, are looking to incorporate more freshly prepared meals from home, nutrition counseling can be tailored to improve your lifestyle.

Memorial Tree or Park Bench

A unique way to honor and remember a loved one is with a memorial tree or park bench. A tree is also the perfect way to commemorate one of life’s milestones, from weddings and anniversaries to the birth of a child. A one-time donation of $600 lets you place the tree of your choice in a park that is special to you. For a Park Bench, a one-time donation of $1,500 buys a new contour style park bench mounted on a concrete pad with a bronze memorial plaque at the location of your choice. Or, a one-time donation of $300 buys a bronze memorial plaque to be mounted onto an existing park bench of your choice. For more information contact John Giacalone at 847-285-5465.

It is in the best interest of our whole community to encourage a healthy lifestyle for all. The Friends of HE Parks Foundation is a dedicated group of community volunteers who raise money so that more residents can participate in and enjoy recreational opportunities, regardless of their social, physical or economic circumstances and limitations. Financial struggle comes with great stress that can take its toll on the mental and physical health of an individual and his or her family. Numerous studies have shown that physical activity and recreation are imperative to relieving stress and maintaining health. It is the mission of the park district to promote the health and well-being of the residents in our district through our facilities and programs. The Foundation strives to promote events that will raise money to help disadvantaged families of our community be able to enjoy Park District programs and facilities.
