Childhood obesity has reached epidemic proportions in our country, as reported by the Centers for Disease Control, which indicates approximately 17% (or 12.5 million) of children and adolescents age 2-19 years are obese. At HEPD, we’re taking this epidemic seriously by addressing the ways that we can help parents and their children in our community. Our ongoing program, started in 2012 and called HEALTH (Helping Everyone Achieve a Lifestyle That’s Healthy), includes:

Summer 2013 PARK BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT Welcome to Summer 2013! Take advantage of every minute of the nice weather this year with one of our many opportunities to get outside and play.

The governing body of the park district is comprised of seven elected commissioners who represent the recreational needs of their community for four year, unpaid terms. Park commissioners have the power to levy taxes within prescribed limits, establish or change park district policies, sign agreements, award contracts and possess all of the powers similar to those of a board of directors for a public corporation. Park commissioners work as a board to interpret the park and recreation needs of the community, formulate short and long term plans and inform the public of the purpose, worth and extent of the district’s services, parks and facilities.

Seascape Family Aquatic Center – Seascape opens Saturday, May 25 with a new, extended operation schedule giving you more days to enjoy fun in the sun. A Season Pass is a great value and creates a lifetime of memories for your family. Make this summer your Seascape Summer. Bridges of Poplar Creek Country Club – If you didn’t have a chance to see the beautiful renovations we last summer made to our 18-hole championship golf course, be sure to find time this year. It’s spectacular. The golf course is now open and reserving tee times.

Board Meetings are held monthly at 7:00P at Triphahn Center and Ice Arena. Buildings & Grounds Committee — 1 st Tuesday Recreation Committee — 2 nd Tuesday Administration and Finance — 3 rd Tuesday

Full Board Meeting — 4 th Tuesday

THANK YOU LOLLIE! Board Commissioner Lollie Guiney, age 82, retires from 16 years of service this year as an HEPD Board Commissioner. Over her 16 years of service, Lollie has been influential in developing better opportunities for women, girls and older adults in our community. She previously served as Vice President and as Assistant Secretary for the Park Board, and as chairwoman for the Buildings and Grounds Committee. Guiney achieved Distinctive Board Member status at the 2010 IAPD Conference and in 2011 Achieved Master Board member status. In 2012, Lollie won the Distinguished Board Member award from the Illinois Parks & Recreation Association. But that’s not all! She has also won numerous medals in the Senior Olympics, including 8 Gold Medals that she won in 2012. Please join us in thanking Lollie for her many contributions to the HEPD!

Free Community Events – Our Touch-a-Truck event takes place on May 4, and you’ll find a great bargain at the Community Garage Sale on May 18. Both events take place outside Seascape Family Aquatic Center. Our popular Children’s Entertainment Series continues this year, every other Friday at the Vogelei Park Pavilion starting in June. Party in the Park – The best free event of the season! Mark August 3 on your calendar for the biggest party in town; Party in the Park is at High Point Park. Explore A Park A Day – Did you know we have 70 parks in Hoffman Estates? If you explored one each day starting June 21, the Summer Solstice, you would visit your last park sometime around Labor Day. That’s a new park for every day of summer! Don’t miss High Point, Brittany and Lincoln Parks where new playground equipment is being installed this Spring. Please stop by one of our facilities, or contact us at 847-885-7500 if there is anything we can assist you with. Enjoy! Keith Evans, President Park Board of Commissioners

Piano Lessons (7-9 years — A & A MUSIC)

Under the sea makes us think of mermaids, fish, shipwrecks and even sharks. All of these will inspire our work as we draw many animal and human characters found under the sea. Our last day will be exciting as we combine the subject matter we have learned into one larger drawing with a story of its own. Media used will include pencils, color pencils and markers. Mgr. Dodson

Everybody loves to play dress-up! In this workshop we will learn to draw ourselves in “glamour” wear. Day 1, we will draw accessories including purses, crowns and jewelry. Day 2, will be simple faces with crowns and hats. Day 3, will revisit the first 2 days while we draw figures wearing fancy gown with a variety of accessories.

Here’s your opportunity to learn how play the piano. Beginning classes for children are being offered in conjunction with A and A Music Academy. Basic music skills such as music reading and counting will be taught. A book fee of $10 payable to A and A Music is due the first day of class. Class Will Not Meet On: 7/4. Mgr. Dodson

This Young Rembrandts’ Pastel Art workshop will focus on three different artists. Each day, we will create a large, original pastel drawing replicating a famous artist’s masterpiece. We will draw a colorful goldfish bowl as Henri Matisse did in his “Goldfish” painting. On Day 2, we will recreate Van Gogh’s famous “Starry Night” complete with swirls throughout the sky. On our final day, we will create powerful still life full of robust color as Paul Cezanne did often in his paintings. Each day will challenge us with the pastel media. But in the end we will be Masters ourselves. Please wear an old shirt or smock each day to class. Mgr. Dodson M,W,F 10:45A-12:15P 6/24-6/28 $68 / $75 237403-B

Hawks Summer Baseball Camp

NEW! Jelly Bean Hitting Clinic

(6-13 years — Hoffman Estates High School )

(Cantebury Fields Park)

This one or two week camp will help teach a young ballplayer how to become a “complete” player by developing his skills through instruction, drills, competitions, and scrimmages. Each day will focus on fundamentals and a specific skill. All of the skills will be taught at an age and skill appropriate level. Topics that will be covered in detail will be: hitting, throwing, pitching, fielding, base running, and various strategies of the game. Both weeks will focus on the fundamentals on the game; but each week will contain different drills, scrimmages, situations, and competitions. Please submit your son’s t-shirt size at time or registration. Contact Coach Todd Meador at tmeador@d211.org or call 847-755-5816.

Children naturally love to hit, but hitting gets more challenging as baseball becomes more competitive. Hitting for power requires body coordination, hand-eye coordination, and hand speed. These skills, combined with poise and decision-making, help players hit the ball under any circumstance. This Hitting Clinic will focus on these major areas while keeping hitting simple, and making learning fun! Baseballs are provided. We will have bats available, but if your child owns a bat, please bring it to the clinic. Participants receive a FREE Jelly Bean Sports t-shirt!

Be a Great Role Model One of the best ways to encourage a healthier lifestyle for children is to lead by example. With busy lifestyles and many responsibilities, parents often forget to make time to meet their own needs. To get started, take time to prepare and eat fresh, healthy meals at home more often. Be willing to try new foods and recipes. Choose healthier snacks, including fruit salad, veggie sticks and hummus, and a variety of whole grain crackers. Make half of your plate fruits and vegetables at meals. Encourage family physical activities, like taking walks after dinner. Do yard work together. Take up a new activity like dancing or martial arts. Try a new class at the gym. Plan a family bike ride. Which oils are the best? Fat is a necessary component in our diet and has many functions in our bodies, like helping vitamins to absorb. It is important to consume fat in moderation (approximately 25% to 35% of your calories each day). When preparing food for your family, choose monounsaturated fats more often. Monounsaturated fats, like olive oil and canola oil, are among the most heart healthy oils, are liquid at room temperature, lower in saturated fat than other oils, and contain Vitamin E. Canola oil is best for higher heat cooking methods like stir frying vegetables. Olive oil can be a great choice for use in cold dishes, like a whole grain pasta salad. -- Amy Daum, Registered Dietitian, PSS&WC

Choose Darker Greens More Often When you select greens for your salad or greens to cook for your family, choose those that are darker green more often. Darker leafy greens, like spinach, kale, and collards, are more nutrient dense than their lighter counterparts like iceberg lettuce. Also keep in mind that two cups of raw leafy greens equals a one cup vegetable serving. One cooked cup of spinach or collards contains some of the highest amounts of calcium within the leafy green family. One cup of cooked spinach, kale, or collards is an excellent source of Vitamins A, C, and K. These great leafy greens also contribute iron, magnesium, folate, and potassium to the diet. Try these greens in raw salads, on sandwiches, and within homemade soups and stews for a great nutrient boost. For great recipes to help you incorporate more dark leafy greens into your diet, visit fruitsandveggiesmorematters.org. -- Amy Daum, Registered Dietitian, PSS&WC

This safety education program introduces children to everything from pedestrian safety, car and bike safety to fire and home safety. In each class we will learn a new safety lesson. Children can bring their own bikes and helmets or ride our Big Wheels through simulated streets to learn street safety. Under guidance, youngsters practice safety-related solutions in a variety of hands-on situations. Each session will include a visit from a police officer. In addition, during each session one class will meet at the Fire Station for a fire safety talk and tour. The last class of each session will take place at Seascape Aquatic Center where children will learn water safety. Children and their parents can stay at Seascape after the lesson for a fun day in the sun! Participants should bring a water bottle each day.

Choose Whole Grains More Often Carbohydrate rich foods, like grains, are the preferred fuel source for our bodies. By choosing whole grain foods more often, you are helping your family to increase their consumption of vitamins, minerals, and fiber. Fiber-rich, whole grain foods are one of the greatest ways to help us stay fuller longer and can be a healthier addition to any meal plan. The best whole grain foods are those with a whole grain listed first on the ingredient statement. Whole grain ingredients on an ingredient statement might include whole wheat, whole oats, and whole rye. Children are often more invested in trying whole grains when you look for recipes together online and shop and prepare the foods as a family. Partner up with your kids to choose some new whole grain foods and recipes that include brown and wild rice, quinoa, and barley. Locate great recipes and more information about whole grains at wholegrainscouncil.org. -- Amy Daum, Registered Dietitian, PSS&WC

Preschool Kids Camp (3-4 years) This two-hour camp is a great way to introduce preschool-aged children to the camp experience, as they explore, learn, play and make new friends. Campers enjoy art, dramatic play, science, songs, outdoor play and active games. Children should bring a healthy snack and drink every day. All campers must be toilet trained. Pull-ups and diapers are not permitted. Every camper receives a t-shirt.

Healthy Kids Camp (3-5 years) It’s time to get healthy! We’re going to spend this summer learning the importance of living a healthy life! We will learn about the importance of eating healthy by focusing on a different fruit and vegetable each day. We will learn the importance of exercising by learning about our body and learning exercises to keep us healthy. We will also learn about ways to keep our world healthy too! A healthy lunch is provided each day. Please dress your child in gym shoes and comfortable clothes.

Safety Town (3-5 years — Vogelei) This safety education program introduces children to everything from pedestrian safety, car and bike safety to fire and home safety.

Give Your Summer Parties a Healthy Boost Offering healthier options for summer barbecues can be easy and fun. Looking for a new way to jazz up seasonal fresh fruit? Try serving fruit kabobs on a tray with wooden skewers. Locate great recipes online for grilled vegetables and grilled fruit. Offer whole grain buns as an option for hot and cold sandwiches. Try a salad bar, with darker green leaf lettuce varieties like Romaine and spinach. Offer optional toppings that are new and different, in addition to your old favorites, like golden beets, red beets, yellow bell peppers, orange cherry tomatoes, walnuts, and sliced strawberries. In addition, try plain Greek yogurt in place of sour cream for healthier dips. -- Amy Daum, Registered Dietitian, PSS&WC

Wolf Pack 3x3 Game Preparation

This two day a week program is to get the new skater familiarized with getting up and down on skates. Learning to work edges by marching, gliding etc. up to the beginning of striding for skating. Much time is given to doing drills that encourage free movement and motion that teaches skills while children are having fun and are unaware they are actually learning. Bike helmet and ski gloves (or similar) required. This is a skating only class. Plastic sticks may be introduced at the end of the session. Mgr. Jordan

This very successful two day a week program is ideal for athletes with minimal experience on skates and those younger that have progressed from the starter program. Although the focus in this program is to learn to execute the important Sumo elements of skating, it also includes training in stick work and small games etc. The goal is to prepare players to advance to adding the 3 on 3 Sunday House League games to the next stage of progression. Equipment is available up to certain sizes. Mgr. Jordan

A great way to learn hockey before taking the final step, moving to playing full ice Wolf Pack team hockey. This cross ice game program has universally become the way top programs through to pro learn to play the game. A smaller area encourages more touches, shots, edge work, etc. in a competitive environment. Mgr. Jordan

Family Fun at Your Local Farmer’s Market

Most adults and children do not eat enough fruits and vegetables. Fruits and vegetables are lower in calories and great sources of vitamins, minerals, fiber, and water. If you are looking for a fun way to incorporate more fruits and veggies into your diet this summer, take your family out for a visit to a local farmer’s market. Encourage your children to help you pick out and prepare new produce during each trip! you are helping residents facing hard times with an unemployment support package you are a Friend of HE Parks!

It is in the best interest of our whole community to encourage a healthy lifestyle for all. The Friends of HE Parks Foundation is a dedicated group of community volunteers who raise money so that more residents can participate in and enjoy recreational opportunities, regardless of their social, physical or economic circumstances and limitations. Financial struggle comes with great stress that can take its toll on the mental and physical health of an individual and his or her family. Numerous studies have shown that physical activity and recreation are imperative to relieving stress and maintaining health. It is the mission of the park district to promote the health and wellbeing of the residents in our district through our facilities and programs. The Foundation strives to promote events that will raise money to help disadvantaged families of our community be able to enjoy park district programs and facilities. One way you can help is by attending one of our fun events throughout the year. For information on how you can help, contact Peg Kusmierski at pkusmierski@heparks.org.
