During our 35 years, we have produced more than 5,000 performances and employed more than 1,500 professional artists. theREP is fortunate to have many loyal subscribers, some of whom have been with us for all 35 years.

We are also celebrating the 20th anniversary of Producing Artistic Director Maggie Mancinelli-Cahill. Under Maggie’s leadership, our theatre has achieved unprecedented artistic success. Just think of some of the shows you’ve seen, and the profound impact they had on you and your guests: ALWAYS…PATSY CLINE, NORA, TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD, MY FAIR LADY, GYPSY, SOUVENIR, THE SECRET GARDEN and so many others. If you are fortunate enough to see Maggie at the theatre, please thank her for 20 years of excellence. theREP is one of the largest arts organizations in the area, and it plays a leading role in the ongoing revitalization of downtown Albany, as well as the greater Capital Region, by bringing more than 75,000 diners, shoppers, and tourists to North Pearl Street every year. And theREP returns more than 83 percent of its $2 million+ annual budget directly back to the local community. theREP also is an arts incubator, fostering artistic talent on and off the stage. Our Next Act! New Play Summit is in its fourth year, providing a national platform for playwrights, directors, actors and composers to workshop plays in progress. Top titles from the event are considered for production at theREP, and you get a chance to weigh in on the conversation as well. This year, our On-The-Go! School Tour Program is staging a fresh take of the classic SLEEPY HOLLOW, and our inaugural Summer Stage Young Acting Company showcased five new plays by young playwrights, performed by young actors.

I’m looking forward to this season, which includes the regional premier of the funny, touching play 4000 MILES followed by A CHRISTMAS STORY, THE MUSICAL, an adaptation of the movie about Ralphie and his quest for a Red Ryder BB Gun. It will also include a play developed in theRep’s Next Act! New Play Summit, NAKED INFLUENCE as well as THE BLUE-SKY BOYS, about the maverick engineers who stopped at nothing to get a man on the moon and back, and THE TRIP TO BOUNTIFUL, Horton Foote’s inspiring story of a widow who slips away from her daughter-in-law’s to visit her childhood home one last time.

Inspired by the success of a similar program in Schenectady between Proctors Theatre and the City Mission of Schenectady, the Albany Ambassadors Program of Interfaith Partnership for the Homeless (IPH) has partnered with KeyBank, Capital Repertory Theatre, and Park Playhouse to provide hospitality to its patrons. Ambassadors greet patrons, provide directions, answer questions, and maintain a safe, clean, welcoming environment to theatergoers.

The Ambassadors Program is giving individuals experience in hospitality. Most participants have little to no job experience, which makes even filling out a job application difficult. Now, these individuals have skills and confidence and are getting jobs in the community.

Vernon proudly wore his Albany Ambassadors badge every day for weeks after he was accepted to the program. This was his first job in a while and he was excited to have been chosen.

Ambassadors are homeless or formerly homeless individuals like Vernon. Participants go through a formal application and interview process and develop critical skills while earning income and strengthening their resumes. They also have support throughout the process. IPH Ambassador Program Supervisor Shahmeeka takes the time to review tax forms, time sheets, and schedules. She helps set them up to succeed and that is exactly what is happening.

LORT administers the primary national not-for-profit collective bargaining agreements with Actors' Equity Association (AEA), the Stage Directors and Choreographers Society (SDC) and United Scenic Artists (USA). Collectively LORT theatres issue more Equity contracts to actors than Broadway and commercial tours combined.

Together, the LORT network forms the backbone of our national theatre, reaching hundreds of thousands of people in communities throughout America.

BEHIND THE CURTAIN Welcome!

Horton Foote’s The Trip to Bountiful reminds us of how our idea of “home” defines our identity.

For 35 years, “home” for Capital Rep has been here at 111 N. Pearl Street. But the concrete walls of our building do not make the home of this theatre. Our real home resides in the hearts of our wonderful patrons—the thousands of people who cross regional boundaries to make our work part of their experience of “home.”

Four years ago, Capital Rep joined forces with Proctors to strengthen the future of the theatre, but it wasn’t only for financial purposes. Yes, we were able to weather the economic downturn better than many regional theatres that suffered and closed. We reduced administrative overhead by sharing staff and financial services—but that was the tip of the iceberg of this affiliation.

By harnessing the resources of Proctors and theREP, we began the process of creating a home for art and entertainment that allows us to share resources across the region. Our joint stability enables us to put our resources into the productions on our stages and in schools in the very communities where our patrons live—creating experiences and memories for all, with some of the finest artists in the country. Our affiliation is part of a vision for eliminating boundaries and expanding horizons for creative work to give our home in the region a large scope—rich in diversity—celebrating talent and the best of the performing arts.

Our Next Act! New Play Summit, which takes place in Albany and Schenectady, is an example of our co-creative process at its best. By exploring new scripts in their embryonic stage, all of us working together have created an incubator for the arts unparalleled in the region, resulting in three world premieres—The God Game, How Water Behaves, Naked Influence—and next season’s Reluctant Wingman. Continuing our regional collaboration, next season includes one show at Proctors, Beautiful – The Carole King Musical. I love this musical and I believe you will too! We would not be able to produce this show for many years (as long as it’s on Broadway or touring) so I am thrilled to include it in our season offering.

Each of us are defining what the Capital Region “home” will be for the next generation. I am so proud that you are a part of the frontrunners to cross boundaries and build a brighter future with more possibilities for all!

THE TRIP TO BOUNTIFUL IN MEMORIAM

Joseph Schuyler…

The Memory Keeper For more than three decades, Joe Schuyler provided a visual diary of our work here at theREP. His photographs line the corridors of our lobby and chronicle our work and best intentions. This dear man and gifted photographer understood that Theatre is ephemeral—made mostly of light and spirit—difficult to capture— impossible to hold on to—experienced, but not always remembered—yet, time after time, Joe captured something magical in his camera. In his frames, the faces sometimes caught the light in such a way that you might swear they actually seem to breathe. Joe’s photographs bear witness to our hopes and dreams—preserving the artists who have graced our stage in their finest moments.

The current photography exhibit in our lobby shows another side of Joe and his artistry. On our walls during The Trip to Bountiful, you will find some of Joe’s favorite work, depicting light and shadow, geometric shapes and urban life, along with samples of his beautiful landscapes and nature subjects that take inspiration from his beloved summer home in Truro on Cape Cod. We hope that you will take a moment or two to drink in the photographs, as we remember an artist who helped us all remember over and over again the very best of ourselves.

HORTON FOOTE: THE AMERICAN LITERARY WONDER Since 1941, when Horton Foote’s first play was produced, there have been very few years when his work has not been in the public eye. He has chronicled a wistful American odyssey through the 20th century in plays, teleplays, and films mostly set in a small town in Texas and leaving a literary legacy as one of the nations foremost storytellers.

His body of work, for which he won a Pulitzer Prize, two Academy Awards, and the National Medal of Arts, depicts everyday people shouldering the ordinary burdens of life. Foote found drama in the fortitude with which people carry on when faced with change, economic adversity, disappointment, loss and death.

In an interview with The New York Times, Foote said: “I believe very deeply in the human spirit and I have a sense of awe about it because I don’t know how people carry on.” Adding: “I’ve known people that the world has thrown everything at to discourage them, to kill them, to break their spirit. And yet something about them retains a dignity.”

He did not start out as a writer, but rather as an actor. One day, while under the direction of Mary Hunter the cast was asked to perform improvisations based on life in their respective hometowns. After Foote’s improv, choreographer Agnes De Mille, asked him if he had ever considered writing. He replied, “No. What on earth would I write about?” DeMille then delivered the age-old advice, “Write what you know.” That night he went home and wrote a one-act called Wharton Dance, about Fridaynight dances in his hometown.

Foote’s next play was a three-act, multilayered drama set in a small-town drugstore called Texas Town. The American Actors Company staged it in 1941, with Foote in the lead role, and Books

Atkinson, critic for The Times, came to see it.

Atkinson called it an “engrossing portrait of small-town life.” Praising it for being “simply written” and for giving “a real and languid impression of a town changing in its relation to the world.” He added, “Mr. Foote’s play is “an able evocation of a part of life in America.””

In 1950, just as television was beginning to take hold, Foote went to work for Fred Coe at NBC, continuing to write plays in his spare time.

His first assignment at NBC was to help write weekly half-hour episodes of the The Gabby Hayes Show. Shortly thereafter, Coe signed Foote to a contract to write nine hour-long dramas for TV. Though Coe liked one-page plot synopses from his writers, when pitching his third script idea, Foote didn’t know how to put it on paper.

So, he just told Coe the plot saying: “It’s about an old lady who wants to go home,” said Foote.

“That’s it?” Coe asked?

“That’s it,” Foote replied.

“Go ahead,” said Coe, “I trust you.”

And The Trip to Bountiful was born, a play that would have several incarnations over Foote’s lifetime. The original teleplay starred Lillian Gish as the gentle and long-suffering widow Carrie Watts.

By the 1960s, Foote’s work on the West Coast in TV led to his first film projects. One of which was his Academy Award winning screenplay adaptation of Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird (1962). His second Academy Award would come twenty years later for his original screenplay Tender Mercies (1983). He had a few other

successes in the film world, one in particular being Baby, the Rain Must Fall (1965) which was a reworking of his play The Traveling Lady.

Later, after the death of his parents, Foote began his nine-play cycle The Orphan’s Home.

The first in the cycle was staged in NYC by Herbert Berghof, and marked the start of a Horton Foote stage revival. Books Atkinson helped launch Foote’s career as a writer, and Frank Rich (of The Times) helped start his revival by writing enthusiastic reviews of the cycle plays. Producers started paying attention to him again, and a new generation of audiences was introduced to his work.

This second act of Foote’s career was given an extended run by the Signature Theatre, an Off Broadway company that devoted its 1994-95 season to his work. In fact his play The Young Man From Atlanta, which was included in the season (and had been written some years earlier, but never performed) won the Pulitzer Prize in 1995.

An American Literary Wonder! Horton Foote’s realistic portrayal of locales and characters of southeastern Texas was his signature for over five decades of writing for the stage, television and film. “I don’t think I’ll ever stop writing,” he said in a 1999 interview. “I write almost every day. I’d write plays even if they were never done again. You’re at the mercy of whatever talent you have.”

Horton Foote was born Albert Horton Foote Jr., to Albert Horton Foote and the former Hallie Brooks, and entered the world on March 14, 1916, in Wharton, Texas.

Foote married Lillian Vallish, a year after their first date, on June 4, 1945. The couple went on to have four children together and remained married, for 47 years, until Ms. Foote’s death in 1992.

While living in Washington D.C., Foote ran the King Smith School along with Vincent Donehue. While there Horton Foote opened the King Smith theatre to all races, making it the first integrated audience in the nation’s capital.

He has music directed and/or accompanied numerous productions throughout the US; including Pentangle/ArtisTree Theatre and Northern Stage in Vermont; Arizona Broadway Theatre, Prather Entertainment Group in Lancaster, PA; the Arundel Barn Playhouse in Maine; Jersey Shore Entertainment and Surflight Theatre in New Jersey; Downstairs Cabaret Theatre; Syracuse Stage and Cortland Repertory Theatre in Upstate New York. Josh is the resident Musical Director at the Mac-Haydn Theatre in Chatham, NY. He was named 2013 Central New York (SALT) Musical Director of the Year by the Syracuse New Times. His musical arrangements have been heard in venues across the country including 54 Below and The Laurie Beechman Theatre in Manhattan. Nova, I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change, Nora and A Christmas Carol for theREP and such classics as Cyrano De Bergerac, Miss Julie, Doctor Faustus, The Seagull, The Importance of Being Earnest, and Moliere’s Don Juan. She has worked on, Off, and Off-Off Broadway. Before assuming the role of Producing Artistic Director with Capital Repertory Theatre in 1995, Maggie served as Producing Director of Urban Stages in New York City, as Artistic Director for Theatre Under Glass in Denver, worked at Aspen’s Playwright’s Festival, Arena Stage in Washington D.C., Sierra Rep and Renegade Artists and on the staffs of The Women’s Project and Ensemble Studio Theatre in NYC. She taught acting at the National Theatre lnstitute at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre Center in Connecticut.

Maggie received a Directors Project Fellowship from the Drama League of New York and holds an MFA in directing from Columbia University. She was honored by the Albany-Colonie Regional Chamber’s Women’s Business Council as one of the 100 Women of Excellence, was awarded the “Distinguished Leadership Award,” by the Chamber and the National Association for Community Leadership and received the 2011 Norman S. Rice Award for Excellence in Arts, Culture and Education by the Downtown Albany Business Improvement District.
