In its relentless quest to promote mental wellness and in line with the Mental Health Awareness Month, the College of Social Sciences and Philosophy Student Council (CSSPSC) hosted a podcast on May 13, 2024 with the theme of "Agyù ku pa: Cultivating Resilience and Wellbeing in a Demanding World.”
THROUGH WEBINAR
by RIANN KRYSTEL VALERIO
He underscored the critical need for a safe environment for children, focusing on social justice, and tackled the challenges of early detection and intervention along with the necessity for professional support He advocated for expanding the roles of committee coordinators to more effectively meet the behavioral and mental health needs of children
Moderated by Jeanell L Pangilinan of 3C and Claire Silva of 3F, the webinar was vibrant and engaging, serving as a partial fulfillment of their course, Seminar on Current Trends in Social Work Practice (SW C20).
Republic Act 9344
Ms Imelda E Yumul, a registered social worker, commenced the webinar with a compelling presentation on the Republic Act 9344 or the "Juvenile Justice and Welfare Act ” Her presentation aimed to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of supporting at-risk youth and children in conflict with the law, emphasizing child-friendly procedures, prevention, diversion, rehabilitation, and reintegration strategies
To cope with a fast-changing world, Mendoza explained how to become stronger mentally, and he also enlisted different strategies that help people have good mental wellness, in general as he noted “Being resilient has different phases and faces.” Mendoza, using both his life stories and his work experience in academia and profession, offered some golden secrets about bouncing back after being knocked down by academic or professional, and personal challenges using the acronym RESILIENT
As the discussion concluded, with the words of Mendoza, “You are not what you are going through,” attendees left the room feeling motivated and knowledgeable about how to bounce back and promote their own well-being in the face of adversity. The CSSPSC's vigorous initiatives of advocating and spreading awareness regarding mental health serve as a forefront, promoting a culture of supportive and caring intellectual community

advances Child Welfare with comprehensive orientation on foster and kinship care to DHVSU Social Work Students
Nby JUSTINE NICOLE C PAMANDANAN AND DAPHANIE ARIANE G MANITI
ational Authority for Child Care (NACC) hosted an orientation on the "Domestic Administrative Adoption and Alternative Child Care Act", May 30, 2024, in the Don Honorio Ventura State University Audio-Visual Room Faculty members and selected BS Social Work students attended the symposium
The orientation provided a detailed exploration of alternative child care options, including foster care, kinship care, and residential care facilities These arrangements are meticulously designed to offer safe and nurturing environments for children who are unable to reside with their biological families.
The topic towards foster care emphasizing placing children with licensed foster parents who have undergone thorough screening and training Also, it was mentioned that the kinship care wherein children are placed with relatives within the fourth degree of consanguinity or affinity, such as grandparents, aunts, and uncles, who are equipped to care for them. This approach helps maintain family bonds and cultural continuity, offering children a sense of familiarity and stability.
Further, during the orientation, it has been said that the residential care facilities provide 24-hour care for orphaned, neglected, or voluntarily surrendered children Serving as temporary havens, they offer immediate safety and care while longterm solutions are sought
It was also highlighted that the new legislative measures aimed at streamlining and improving the child welfare system, such as the Certification Declaring a Child Legally Available for Adoption (CDCLAA) under Republic Act 11642 mandates that only one certification from the NACC is required to declare a child legally available for adoption, simplifying and expediting the process.
Simulated Birth Rectification Act, Republic Act No 11222, amended by RA 11642 and signed by President Duterte, addresses the issue of false information on birth certificates of the child This legislation facilitates an administrative adoption process without court procedures, managed directly by the NACC.
Hence, the social work students collectively dictated "AMPON", an abbreviation for “Anak, Magulang, Pamilya, Ordinaryo pero, Natatangi,” which correlates to uplifting the main concern of the event, the best interest of the child
As these measures are implemented, significant improvements in the child care system are anticipated The NACC in collaboration with supportive foundations, continues to advocate for the rights and welfare of every child, ensuring that no child is left behind in the pursuit of a better future

nnually, disasters dominate: resiliency is highlighted but preparedness is subjugated The Philippines is one of the countries that is vulnerable to natural disasters such as typhoons, earthquakes, and volcanic activities; vulnerability refers to a country’s potential of suffering damages during natural catastrophes and its ability to respond rapidly and in the long run
According to the recent World Risk Index, the Philippines ranked first among 193 member states of the United Nations (UN), with a score index of 46 91 This report was evaluated by exposure to natural hazards, population susceptibility, and societal coping and adaptation capacity Data signifies how the Philippines is vulnerable to any natural hazard due to its geographic location, yet, Filipinos remain resilient Resiliency is not the main solution to the main problem, but to mitigate it is to invest in disaster preparedness rather than merely pliability
Environmental catastrophes are inevitable As stated by Ma Antonia Yulo-Loyzaga Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) secretary, the Philippines has steady population growth and a lower poverty rate, which explains the country’s high level of susceptibility The Philippines lies in the typhoon belt, where one-third of the world’s tropical cyclones form, and in the Pacific Ring of Fire, the most active volcanoes and tectonic plates can be found.
Despite all these calamities, Filipinos have to be resilient towards casualties and hold their smiles after a disaster Filipinos always choose to be resilient over disaster preparedness because to be resilient is to be a survivor Instead of thinking how to survive, Filipinos think of how they can find reason to smile to at least reduce the burden rather than creating an intellectual way to mitigate these problems Resiliency is more significant than convenience to the community
In contrast to that, natural disasters are inevitable yet preventable Filipino resilience is no longer enough to survive During the opening ceremony of the 2024 “Handa Pilipinas: Innovations in Disaster Resilience Luzon Leg,” Department of Science and Technology (DOST) secretary Renato U Solidum Jr stated on July 2, 2024, Filipinos smile after calamities, accepting the worst situations, and embracing resiliency, as norms decrease quality of life.
Resilience alone cannot save lives, rebuild houses, or mitigate casualties But disaster preparedness can Solidum indicated the three important goals that should guide the government to achieve the redefined Filipino resiliency, which is, strengthen the houses we create, relocate to a safer region, and ensure that structures are usable before and after the hazards These measurements are too simple to solve complicated problems yet feasible and accessible solutions
Smiling is not always the answer to the problems Instead, the mentality of transforming the perspective of Filipino resiliency by being a picture perfect smile to being versatile, by taking small steps towards disaster preparedness, namely recalibrating the waste: from trash to cash, Rebuilding: The earthquake prone to earthquake proof infrastructure Awareness campaign: educating for reducing waste and gas emission In the geographically calamity-prone county, revoking subjective beliefs that transform the “Filipino ready to picture smile”, to unleash the “Filipinos ready to calamities ”
