SEMANA BINACIONAL DE SALUD EN OMAHA

uevamente en la ciudad de Omaha se vive uno de los proyectos más ambiciosos para mejorar la salud de la población inmigrante más desfavorecida en los Estados Unidos y Canadá, un evento que se ha convertido en la mayor movilización comunitaria del continente Americano, cuyo nombre es: La Semana Binacional de Salud (SBS) Habrá que puntualizar que los latinos son el grupo minoritario más grande y de mayor crecimiento de los EE. UU. “Alrededor de 46 millones de personas de origen latino viven actualmente en los EE. UU., aproximadamente el 15% del total de la población. Pero, a pesar de ser la minoría más grande del país, la falta de acceso a la atención médica y al seguro médico siguen siendo unos de los problemas importantes que enfrenta esta comunidad”, según difunde la SBS. “Los latinos son la población más vulnerable de los EE. UU. en términos de acceso a la atención médica debido a una serie de obstáculos, incluyendo su situación socioeconómica precaria y su condición de inmigrantes”, agregan en su sitio web. Por ello, para abordar con eficacia las necesidades de la población latina y para facilitar la creación de políticas públicas adecuadas sobre atención médica, en el año 2000 surgió la SBS. Durante este evento, “instituciones de todos niveles de gobierno, organizaciones comunitarias y miles de voluntarios se reúnen durante octubre para realizar actividades gratuitas de salud, enfocadas a la promoción y la educación. Ahí se incluyen vacunas contra la influenza, exámenes de audición y visión, detección de enfermedades de trasmisión sexual (ETS), presión arterial, azúcar y colesterol, entre otras actividades, servicios y regalos”, explicó Cristóbal Lord, del consulado de México en Omaha. Actualmente, se reporta la participación de las redes consulares de México, Guatemala, Honduras, Colombia, Ecuador, Perù y Bolivia. De una manera local, cada consulado tiene la tarea de realizar las conexiones pertinentes para lograr el equipo de trabajo adecuado que permita ofrecer, por una semana, los diversos tópicos considerados en su misión. De esta forma, en Omaha se logró tener la primera Semana Binacional de Salud en el 2005.

La Semana Binasional de Salud dedicará actividades especificas para las mujeres Latinas de Omaha

Desde entonces, se ha logrado un avance favorable, lo que hoy permite sumar a más de 40 agencias de salud participantes, mismas que en este 2013 esperan beneficiar a más de 900 personas en el área metropolitana de Omaha y sus alrededores. De lograrlo, estarían rompiendo el récord del año pasado. Este evento gratuito, estará abierto a toda la familia, del 2 al 12 de octubre y dividirá sus actividades en 4 ferias. En ellas, se dará prioridad a diversos temas relevantes para la salud de la población migrante latina, entre los que se incluyen: la Reforma de Salud en los EE. UU. y el Acceso a Servicios de Salud, Salud Ocupacional, Enfermedades Crónicas, como la Obesidad y la Diabetes, Enfermedades Infecciosas como el VIH y la Tuberculosis y Salud Ocupacional. Aparte de los exámenes médicos ofrecidos, estarán presentes 23 agencias expositoras. De acuerdo con estimaciones de los organizadores, si las personas están considerando visitar a cada ex-

positor y realizarse cada examen, les tomara un tiempo de dos horas aproximadamente. Así, la primera feria será dedicada a los adultos mayores. Ocurrirá este 2 de octubre, durante 3 horas, a partir de las 9 de la mañana, en el Centro Intercultural para Adultos mayores, ubicado en el 2021 de la calle U. La segunda feria será dedicada a los niños. Ocurrirá el sábado 5 de octubre, de 9 a. m., a 1 p. m., en el Boys and Girls Club del Sur, ubicado en el 5051 de la calle 22. La tercera feria se enfocará en la Salud de las Mujeres. Será el miércoles 9 de octubre de 5:30 p.m. a 8 p.m., en las instalaciones de One World Community Health Center, ubicado en el 4930 de la calle 30. La cuarta feria esta consagrada para toda la comunidad. El día seleccionado fue el 12 de Octubre, de 9 a.m. a 3 p.m., dentro del Metropolitan Community College del Sur, ubicado en el 2902 de la avenida Edward Bebé Gómez. De manera concluyente, habrá que indicar que el crecimiento de la población Latina de los EE.

nce again the city of Omaha is home to one of the most ambitious projects for improving the health of the poor immigrant population in the United States and Canada, an event that has become one of the largest community mobilization actions in the American continent. This event is called the BiNational Health Week (Semana Binacional de Salud - SBS). We must state that Latinos are the largest minority group in the U.S. and the one with the biggest growth. “Currently, about 46 million people with Latino roots live in the U.S., which is about 15% of the total population. But, even though they’re the largest minority in the country, a lack of access to health care and health insurance is still one of the most important problems faced by this community,” said the SBS. “Latinos are the most vulnerable population in the U.S. in regard to access to health care because of several obstacles, including their precarious socioeconomic situation and their status as immigrants.” Because of that, in the year 2000 the SBS was born to properly target the needs of the Latino population and to make it easier for adequate public policies for health care to be created. At this event “institutions from every government level, community-based organizations and thousands of volunteers come together in October to provide free health care, as well as participating in activities focused on promoting good health and educating others on the matter. This includes applying influenza vaccines, administering sight and hearing tests, detecting sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), blood pressure, cholesterol and sugar levels screenings, as well as other activities, services and gifts,” said Cristobal Lord of the Mexican Consulate in Omaha. As of now, the Consulates for México, Guatemala, Honduras, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia participate in this event. On a local level, each Consulate has the task of networking in order to assemble the proper work team to present the diverse topics considered for this mission, all once a week. It is in this way that Omaha managed to host the first BiNational Health Week in 2005. From then on everything has improved and evolved and today over 40 health agencies are part of the event, and in 2013 said agencies hope they benefit over 900 people in the metropolitan area of Omaha and its surrounding areas. If they manage to achieve this, they would be breaking last year’s record. This free event will be open for the whole family from October 2nd to the 12th and it will divide all of its activities into 4 fairs. At each one, priority will be given to a diverse selection of topics relevant to the health of the Latino immigrant population, such as: the U.S. Health Reform and

BiNational Health Week will divide all of its activities into 4 fairs. the Access to Health Care, Occupational Health, Chronic Diseases such as Obesity and Diabetes, and Infectious Diseases such as HIV and Tuberculosis. Along the available medical exams, 23 agencies will be providing information on a wide range of topics. According to estimates from the organizers, if people are thinking about visiting each exhibitor and want to subject themselves to each test and screening, it will take them about two hours or so to do it all. The first fair for the event will be dedicated to senior citizens and will take place on October 2nd for 3 hours, starting at 9 a.m., at the Intercultural Senior Center located at 2021 U Street. The second fair will be dedicate to kids and will take place on Saturday, October 5th, from 9 a. m. to 1 p. m., at the Boys and Girls Club of the Midlands, located at 5051 South 22 Street. The third fair will focus on the Health of Women, and it will take place on October 9th from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the One World Community Health Center, located at 4930 30 Street. at the Metropolitan Community College South Omaha Campus, located at 2902 Edward Babe Gomez Avenue. We must firmly state that the growth rate of the Latino population in the U.S. is unstoppable. Therefore, it is crucial for the future of the U.S. that the health and wellbeing of all Latinos is properly considered. Unfortunately, preventive medical care services and emergency health care services are usually out of their reach. Therefore, if the disparity in health services and the lack of access to medical attention that Latinos must endure continues as is, it will have negative consequences on the future of the U.S. Thus, in hoping to bring equity to this situation, the SBS continues to break down the barriers that make it harder for Latinos to have access to medical services, and calls out to the public so that more institutions can be a part of this event and for people to be a part of the activities, so that it makes it possible to provide the proper health services that the Hispanic community desperately needs. magine tratar de comunicarse con el maestro de sus hijos en un idioma extranjero, o tratar de ayudar a su hijo con su tarea en un idioma extranjero. Estos escenarios son una realidad para cientos de familias de inmigrantes en Omaha que tienen hijos en escuelas de la Comunidad de Aprendizaje (Learning Community) y es una realidad en la que el Centro Comunitario de Aprendizaje en el Sur de Omaha, que acaba de abrir durante el mes de septiembre en 23rd y M Streets, está trabajando para hacerlo más manejable. Ted Stillwell, C.E.O. de la Comunidad de Aprendizaje, además de un anterior maestro, ilustró uno de los problemas que surgen cuando existe una brecha entre los idiomas: “Cuando yo daba clases a los pequeños que entendían muy bien el inglés y tenían padres que no lo entendían… los niños tenían una gran desventaja si ellos podían decirle [a los padres] lo que estaba pasando en la escuela y los padres no podían hablar con la enfermera o el director de la escuela y tenían que obtener toda su información a través del estudiante”. “Imagine que está en la escuela y tiene que explicar todo lo que está pasando en su ella”, expresó Stillwell. Es esta la razón del enfoque del Centro en enseñar lo que la Comunidad de Aprendizaje llama “Alfabetización Familiar”, un término amplio que contempla lecciones de inglés, conocimiento sobre cómputo, habilidades paternales tales como leer por las noches a sus hijos, así como estrategias para comunicarse con los maestros y administradores de la escuela. Los orígenes del centro parten de la misma legislación Unicameral del 2007 que estableció la Comunidad de Aprendizaje, la cual también establecía la creación de centros de aprendizaje elemental que pudieran brindar a los padres las herramientas necesarias para ayudar en los logros académicos de sus hijos – sin embargo, dicha legislación fue un tanto ambigua en cuanto a los recursos exactos que serían proporcionados a dichos centros de aprendizaje. La legislación “es muy amplia acerca de lo que puede hacerse en un centro de aprendizaje elemental”, dijo Stillwell. “Se pueden dar clases de cómputo, clases G.E.D., clases de matemáticas por las tardes… había una lista de diecisiete o dieciocho sugerencias de la legislatura”. Después de un estudio por parte del Consejo Coordinador de la Comunidad de Aprendizaje – el órgano de dieciocho miembros que rige sobre la Comunidad de Aprendizaje – se determinó que lo que más se necesitaba era un centro en el Sur de Omaha que brindase a los padres inmigrantes las herramientas para que pudieren participar en y ser parte de la educación de sus hijos. “La idea es que si se puede ayudar a los padres y adultos que están trabajando con estos niños muy pequeños, entonces ello tendrá un impacto sobre las habilidades de alfabetización y lectura de los niños”, explicó Stillwell. El 24 de abril del 2012, el Centro comenzó a operar en el Centro Juan Diego en South 31st Street con dieciocho familias de las Escuelas Primarias Indian Hills y Gomez Heritage. El progreso de estas familias fue

NIÑOS Y ADULTOS DISFRUTAN LAS ACTIVIDADES DEL NUEVO CENTRO COMUNITARIO evaluado por el Instituto Munroe-Meyer en el Centro Médico de la Universidad de Nebraska y, aunque los resultados oficiales no serán publicados hasta finales de octubre o principios de noviembre de este año, Anne O’Hara, Directora de Programas en el Centro Comunitario de Aprendizaje, dirige nuestra atención a la participación del 100 por ciento de los Padres de Familia en una reunión entre estos y los maestros, con la presencia de dieciocho familias, como una señal de que los esfuerzos del Centro están funcionando. Otro indicador sobre el éxito del programa se observa en el crecimiento de 80 familias a 170 familias en el Centro Juan Diego, que forman parte de once escuelas primarias, en un nuevo edificio, el cual anteriormente era el hogar de la Biblioteca del Sur de Omaha y que fue renovado durante este verano pasado. Para poder calificar para su registro, una familia debe residir en el Subdistrito 5 de la Comunidad de Aprendizaje y tener un hijo de entre cuatro y siete años de edad. “Tenemos personas que llegan sin cita todos los días”, dijo O’Hara. “No hemos tenido que reclutar a muchas personas. Hicimos algo de reclutamiento este verano,

pero prácticamente nos detuvimos. Creo que fácilmente podríamos encontrar 500 familias si las buscásemos… se que pronto tendremos que comenzar a rechazar familias. Pero en gran parte hemos dejado de reclutar pues las personas han estado trayendo a sus familiares y amigos. Para mediados de este mes [octubre] estaremos a capacidad completa. Llegaremos a un máximo de 180 familias en este edificio”. “Una vez que entran por la puerta se emocionan y quieren quedarse”, nos dijo. Y ello nos lleva a la siguiente pregunta - ¿qué sigue después? Ya se está trabajando en un Centro para el Norte de Omaha, el cual se enfocará menos en las lecciones sobre inglés pero retendrá una gran porción de los cursos del programa “Alfabetización Familiar” y Stillwell espera que eventualmente cuenten con centros “satélite” alrededor de la ciudad que puedan funcionar como “versiones más pequeñas” del programa. Es claro al visitar el Centro del Sur de Omaha que las familias que se benefician por el programa están muy agradecidas. Al salir Sylvia Dorres junto con su hijo, ella dijo: “Me gusta hablar en inglés… es por mis hijos”.

Recordatorio para registración La Conferencia de Liderazgo Latino Heartland se llevará a cabo el 14 y 15 de noviembre en el Hilton que se encuentra en el centro de Omaha. “Una Comunidad, una visione, una acción” será el tema de este año. La tarifa para los estudiantes de secundaria para asistir a la conferencia es de $25 y la cuota para los estudiantes universitarios de la zona es de $50. El propósito de la organización es ayudar a los latinos a aprender, desarrollar y fomentar su potencial de liderazgo para que puedan crear un cambio social y cultural. Reporte sobre inmigración El Centro Hispano de Investigación Pew recientemente público un informe que indica que “la fuerte caída de la población de inmigrantes no autorizados que acompañó la recesión de 2007-2009 ha tocado fondo, y el número puede estar aumentando de nuevo.” De acuerdo con el informe preliminar sobre basado en datos del gobierno a partir de marzo de 2012, 11.7 millones de inmigrantes indocumentados viven en los Estados Unidos. En 2007 el número de inmigrantes no autorizados alcanzó un máximo de 12.2 millones. Sin embargo, el número se redujo a 11.3 millones en 2009. La cantidad después de 2007 fue especialmente cierto entre los inmigrantes de México, que a partir de 2012 eran el 52% total de inmigrantes no autorizados en los Estados Unidos. If you’ve been in a store recently, you know as well as anyone else that retailers and other businesses have been knee-deep in holiday planning for several months now. And their next step? It’s probably hiring extra help for the crush that businesses feel around the holiday season. Which means -you guessed it- a ton of jobs will be opening up in Omaha shortly and it’s our job to tell you who’s planning for extra help to spread holiday cheer this year.

The Numbers There isn’t much mystery in the types of businesses who typically create jobs in Omaha for the holiday season. According to average employment information by industry provided by Phil Baker, labor market information director for the Nebraska Department of Labor, general merchandise stores have created the largest number of jobs: more than 8,500 in the fourth quarter since 2007. Clothing and accessory stores closely follow with more than 8,300 people employed during the same timeframe. The true narrative, though, comes in the comparison of job orders in Douglas, Sarpy and Washington counties, as compiled by the department of labor. This data covers the fourth quarter for 2011 and 2012 and shows a sharp contrast in the number of jobs created during the holiday season. Of the nearly two dozen industries listed, the four with the highest job creation were accomodation and food services; arts, entertainment and recreation; retail trade; and transportation and warehousing. By far, retail trade had the highest average employment over both fourth quarter periods with 851, followed by accommodation and food service with 209. The month with the highest job orders was October 2012 with 429 compared with October 2011, in which just 52 jobs were created. So why the big difference from one year to the next? Baker says it’s a direct correlation to economic confidence. “I believe that in 2011 employers were still a little skeptical of whether consumers would have the money to spend as we were just starting to come out of the recession,” he said. “I think what is reflected in 2012 job orders placed by Omaha employers is more reflective of the normal ebbs and flows of the economy.”

jobs for the holiday season, and that is true this year as well, says Employment Supervisor, Wylene Woodard. “We have a lot of positions where people can earn up to $2,500 or much more during the holidays and get our employee discount for a full year,” she said. “In September and October we typically hire about 3,500 temporary employees to work in our call center and distribution center during November and December.” If you’re looking for a job during the holidays this year, don’t limit your search to the typical opportunities. Omaha’s Hayneedle, the 27th largest Internet-only retailer in the country, is looking to fill 175 jobs alone in its Customer Care Center located in the Chalco Valley Business Park, says Donna Faust, the company’s director of brand marketing and media relations. “We are hiring across the organization to support our growth initiatives,” Faust says. “The biggest area of need currently is for seasonal associates to help us serve our customers through the holiday season.” Hayneedle, which has more than 400 employees in Omaha before the holiday hires, also has fulfillment centers in Ohio and California, both of which will also be nearly doubling their employee population during the holiday season. Hayneedle will be hiring new employees for its phone service, sales and e-mail service teams, including customer advocates, internet retail associates and seasonal e-mail service specialists. Faust describes the successful candidates for these positions being people who are happy and work hard to provide information and insight as well as people who are keen to offer advice on finding just the right product to fit the customer’s needs. “These positions tend to last about 90 days with potential for full time employment after the season has ended,” Faust said. “We actually fill many of our corporate openings from the Customer Care Center. In fact, a third of my team has worked there.” If you’re looking to earn some extra cash this holiday season, and if last year’s holiday hiring statistics hold true this year, you will be able to choose from some of Omaha’s best and brightest companies.

Immigration Report The Pew Hispanic Research Center recently released a report indicating “the sharp decline in the U.S population of unauthorized immigrants that accompanied the 2007-2009 recession has bottomed out, and the number may be rising again.” According to the preliminary report based on government data as of March 2012, 11.7 million unauthorized immigrants were living in the United States. In 2007 the number of unauthorized immigrants peaked at 12.2 million. However, the numbers fell to 11.3 million in 2009. The dip after 2007 was especially true among immigrants from Mexico, who as of 2012 made up 52 percent of the total unauthorized immigrants in the United States. According to the Pew Center, these estimates should be treated as preliminary because they will be replaced with micro-data which will be available later this year and will allow them to derive better estimates. Obama’s Address to the Nation On September 28, President Obama addressed the nation during his weekly address. Obama focused on expanding access to affordable healthcare for all Americans and also focused on averting a government shutdown. “Tens of millions of Americans will finally have the same chance to buy quality, affordable health care as everyone else,” pointed out Obama adding “it’s also the day that a group of far-right Republicans in Congress might choose to shut down the government and potentially damage the economy just because they don’t like this law.” Obama clarified that some Republicans in Congress are threatening to shut down the government if he does not gut the healthcare law immediately, however Obama used the time to call upon congress to meet two responsibilities “pass a budget on time and pay our bills on time.” The economy of the United States is slowly gaining traction, however many remain hopeful that Congress will not take any steps to severely damage our progress.

HELPING parents and children LEARNING COMMUNITY CENTER OF SOUTH OMAHA

or most people living in Omaha it’s hard enough to imagine ordering food in a foreign language. So now imagine communicating with your child’s teacher in a foreign language. Or helping that child with homework in a foreign language. Those scenarios are reality for hundreds of immigrant Omaha families with children in Learning Community schools, and a reality that the Learning Community Center of South Omaha, which just opened this past September on 23rd and M Streets, is working to make more manageable. Ted Stillwell, C.E.O. of the Learning Community as well as a former teacher, illustrated one of the problems that arise when such a language gap exists: “When I taught I had kids that understood English very well and parents that didn’t...the kids then had a pretty big advantage if they could tell you [the parents] what was going on in school and the parents couldn’t talk to the school nurse or principal and they had to get everything through the student.” “Imagine if you are in middle school and it’s up to you to convey what’s going on in school,” Stillwell deadpanned. And thus the reason the crux of the Center’s focus is concerned with teaching what the Learning Community calls “Family Literacy,” a broad term which encompasses English lessons, computer knowledge, parenting skills such as reading to children at night, and strategies for communicating with school teachers and administrators. The Center’s origins stem from the same 2007 Unicameral bill that established the Learning Community,

which also mandated the creation of elementary learning centers that would provide parents with the resources needed to help their children’s scholastic achievement -on what exact resources to provide at said learning centers, however, the bill remained quite ambiguous. The bill “is very broad about what you can do at an elementary learning center,” Stillwell said. “You could run computer classes, you could run G.E.D. classes, you could do after-school math...there was a list of seventeen or eighteen suggestions from the legislature.” After a study by the Learning Community Coordinating Council -- the eighteen-member governing body of the Learning Community -- it was determined that what was most needed was a South Omaha center that would empower immigrant parents to become more involved with their child’s education. “The idea is if you can better help the parents and the adults who are working with these very young children it’s going to affect the children’s reading and literacy skills,” Stillwell explained. On April 24th, 2012 the Center began operating out of the Juan Diego Center on South 31st Street with eighteen families drawn from Indian Hills and Gomez Heritage Elementary Schools. The progress of those families was evaluated by the Munroe-Meyer Institute at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, and although their official results won’t be published until late October or November of this year, Anne O’Hara, Program Director of the South Omaha Community Learning Center, points to a 100% Parent-Teacher Conference participation rate among those eighteen families as signs that the Center’s efforts are working.

Another indication of the program’s success is its growth from 80 families at the Juan Diego Center to 170 families drawn from eleven elementary schools at the new building, which used to house the South Omaha Branch Library and was renovated this past summer. In order to qualify for enrollment a family must reside in the Learning Community’s Subdistrict 5 and have a child aged four to seven. “We have walk-ins everyday,” O’Hara said. “We haven’t had to do much recruitment. We did some this summer, bur we kind of stopped. I think we could easily find 500 families if we looked for them...I know that very soon we are going to have to start turing families away. But we have for the most part stopped recruitment because people have been bringing their families and friends in. By the middle of this month [October] we’ll be full. We’ll max out at about 180 families in this building.” “Once they’re in the door they get excited, they want to stay,” she concluded. Which brings about the question -- what next? Already in the works is a North Omaha Center, which will focus less on English lessons but will retain a large portion of the “Family Literacy” curriculum, and Stillwell hopes that eventually there will be “satellite” centers all around the city that can function as “smaller versions” of the program. “There are more than 200 families that could benefit from this,” he said. Still, it was clear from my visit to the South Omaha Center that the families who the program is benefitting now are grateful. Said Sylvia Dorres as she walked out, kid in tow, “I like talking in English...it’s for my children.”

Los hermanos Monge, tenaces empresarios salvadoreños detrás del Latino Market

uando conocí a Saúl Monge, propietario del Latino Market en Concil Bluffs, Iowa, me causó muy buena impresión por su trato amable y por su sonrisa sincera. Era el 30 de junio y mientras el verano estaba en pleno apogeo, Saúl y su hermano Carlos Monge anunciaban con globos multicolores que abrían las puertas de su tienda. Días después regresé al establecimiento y en ésa ocasión era Carlos quien estaba detrás del mostrador, atareado con la clientela que compraba tarjetas telefónicas, tortillas, verdura y frutas, tan apreciadas y difíciles de conseguir como las tunas, el lulo y el jocote rojo. Luego de esperar unas semanas después de la inauguración para charlar mejor, finalmente fue Saúl quien me recibió una mañana, atento como siempre, y dispuesto a contarme un poco de su vida, una vida que no ha sido fácil pues él y su familia sufrieron los estragos de la Guerra Civil en su natal El Salvador. “Éramos siete hermanos - explicó Saúl -, y dos de ellos fallecieron a consecuencia de eso. Mi madre también murió, víctima de la guerra. Yo estaba muy pequeño, tenía apenas unos 6 años, pero aún tengo recuerdos tristes de esos momentos”. Afortunadamente Carlos emigró a Estados Unidos, instalándose primero en California en 1993, y finalmente estableciéndose en Council Bluffs. Lo que indudablemente alentó a Saúl quien tres años después salió de El Salvador para seguirlo. Atrás se quedó el lugar que lo vió nacer, la bella ciudad colonial de Suchitoto, a la que Saúl aún no ha podido regresar a visitar. “Mi hermano tuvo un restaurante hace años y yo me dediqué a comprar casas para arreglarlas y vend-

erlas, pero él siempre quiso que nos juntáramos y abriéramos un negocio”, comentó Saúl quien lleva 7 años trabajando en una tienda departamental, vendiendo celulares. En el Latino Market, los hermanos Monge apostaron por tener lo que la clientela más necesita, “por eso tomamos la información que nos da la gente, y nos ayuda mucho porque nos explican qué es lo que más compran”. Además de los innumerables productos mexicanos que incluyen hasta los nopales, Saúl y Carlos tienen gran variedad de comestibles centroamericanos, “como los quesos, crema, jugos y chips (botanitas) que acostumbramos en nuestros países”. Así en surtidos refrigeradores lo mismo vemos las arepas, que las pupusas, los sopes, “y los tamales que a los americanos les gustan tanto”. he parents of Adrian Diaz are from the Mexican State of Durango: “They immigrated to the United States many years ago so that their children could have a better education.” When I met Saul Monge, owner of Latino Market in Council Bluffs, Iowa, he made a great first impression thanks to his kind demeanor and honest smile. It was June 30, and with the summer in full swing, when Saul and his brother Carlos Monge announced with multicolored balloons that their store was now open for business. A few days later I returned to the store, and this time Carlos was behind the counter busily tending to clients who were buying phone cards, tortillas, fruit and vegetables such as the greatly appreciated and hard to find tunas, lulo and red jocote. After allowing a few weeks to go by after the store’s opening in order to have a better chat, Saul welcomed me one morning, as charming and polite as ever, ready to tell me a bit about his life, a life that has not been easy for him because of how he and his family suffered the consequences of the Civil War in El Salvador, their homeland.

“We were seven brothers – explained Saul – and two of them died because of it. My mother also died a victim of the war. I was very young, barely 6 years old, but I still remember the sadness from those times.” Fortunately Carlos immigrated to the United States and first settled in California in1993 until finally deciding to make Council Bluffs his home. This definitely encouraged Saul to join him, and he left El Salvador three years later. He left behind the place where he was born, the beautiful city of Suchitoto, a place where Saul has not yet been able to return. “My brother had a restaurant a few years ago and I kept myself busy by purchasing homes and fixing them for resale, but he always wanted us to get together and open a business,” said Saul who’s been working for 7 years now at a department store selling cellphones. At Latino Market, the Monge brothers bet on having what their clients needed the most, “that’s why we take the information they give to us which helps us a lot since they explain what they buy the most.” Along the many Mexican products they sell, like their delicious nopales, Saul and Carlos have a wide variety of food from Central America, “such as
