Due to a numerous amount of phishing attempts, St. Mary’s cyber security team has implemented a multi-factor authentication, or MFA, process. Students and faculty may have noticed that they received some suspicious emails from other students recently. The compromised accounts have been dealt with. “We returned from campus and there
were several students, a few employees, but quite a few students who had fallen victim to phishing attempts,” said Curtis White, vice president of information services. Phishing is a type of cyberattack which primarily comes in the form of fraudulent emails in order to obtain sensitive information. “These phishing attempts are coming in everyday ... our security appliances do a good job at stopping some of them, but not all of them. Phishing is that prominent,”
said Joseph Longo, executive director for enterprise systems. According to Curtis White, other schools have been affected by phishing attempts as well. A compromised school account can be very dangerous; at first glance it may seem legitimate, however, upon further review, the email will show signs of fraud. Information services sent notifications to the students whose accounts were compromised. Often times, the accounts were set to delete emails from information
